Welcome to your July issue...

Inside Highlights

Wow, what a fabulous, funpacked month that was!

As I write this, we are in the midst of a mini heatwave.

It was really heart-warming the ways in which whole communities came together to share in celebrations for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and I’m sure memories of the four-day weekend and all its various activities will live forever in our minds. Some things which a town or a village decide to organise so that everyone in that community can get together don’t just happen – it’s always down to a small number of individuals who selflessly give their time and commitment to ensuring that everything works according to a plan.

Long sleeved tops and trousers have been consigned to the wardrobe for a few days and bare arms and legs are the order of the day… well at least for the time being.

For all the towns and villages within our “Discovering region”, take a bow all you fixers and shakers, and let’s all move into summer with smiles on our faces, hoping that the weather will enable us all to make the most of our great outdoors.

Claire x

I’ve never been much of one for sunbathing but I do like to pick up a bit of a tan while I’m out shopping or taking my dog for a walk, however there’s one thing that has always puzzled me and also I’m led to believe other people How come the sun’s rays manage to get to most of one’s body apart from the bit between the knee and the ankle, namely the shin? I’ve seen loads of people walking about looking a healthy shade of brown, but with very pale shins. As for mine, they are currently a very nice shade of off-white…

THE CASE FOR PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

T

CUSTOM-BUILT COMPUTERS

here are many reasons why it makes sense to have a custom desktop computer built for you, particularly if you are after a bargain or you’re an avid gamer/photographer/architect/ accountant etc. A custom-built computer gives you a rock-solid system, which is ready to go straight out of the box. Every one of my own PCs has been custom built… by my own fair hands of course! The best reason to buy a custombuilt computer is that they are often cheaper. With pre-built computers, manufacturers increase upgrade prices considerably because many of the premium components (motherboards, graphics cards and RAM) carry high mark-ups. This in turn boosts profits, covers their building costs and funds post-purchase support. A custombuilt PC can indeed include premium components but without the mark-ups. Most off-the-shelf computers come with pre-selected specifications and components;

therefore, customers often need to choose between needs and price. Custom PCs, on the other hand, are flexible since you can choose your own quality components – motherboard, graphics card, storage devices, memory, processor and even the power supply (many manufacturers cut costs by including a generic power unit which can severely limit the machine’s upgrade potential). In fact, many manufacturers won’t let you upgrade your prebuilt computer without voiding the warranty, meaning that you will need to buy a new one once it starts to slow down. However, with a custom-built PC, you can upgrade individual components (graphics card, memory, case, optical drive, power supply, processor, motherboard, mouse, monitor, keyboard, and speakers) as and when you need to. Think Trigger from Only Fools and Horses – “I’ve had this broom for twenty years; it’s had seventeen new heads and fourteen new handles.” Which is exactly what a custom PC is all about, you don’t

need to buy a new one, you simply remove the parts that are dated and put the upgrades in. Moreover, each part then has its own warranty. All pre-built PCs come installed with loads of useless junk, also known as ‘Bloatware.’ This can range from PC ‘optimisation’ software to unwanted demo versions of other programs and games. Bloatware, although not dangerous, does slow things down by running in the background of your device and taking up unnecessary space on your hard drive. However, buying a custom-built PC will not include any unnecessary applications that compromise the performance of your computer. If you want to buy a generic PC from an appliance salesman who doesn’t know one end of a PC from a fridge, so be it. However, if you want it big, fast, small, very fast, flashy lights, ridiculously fast, matt black, phenomenally fast or just plain nippy, then custom is, and always has been, the way to go!

Get Your Numbers Right Keith Day Checking your lottery numbers can be pleasing or frustrating but if you are running a business and employing people four numbers are vitally important. Get them right – no problems. Get them wrong – potentially an expensive mistake. HM Revenue & Customs has warned employers to ensure their payment reference numbers are correct so that payments are recognised. It’s not surprising, in our experience, just how many owners get this wrong. Payment reference numbers relate to specific employers and cover a particular accounting period. HMRC uses these reference numbers to allocate payments and to help process taxes related to PAYE payments as quickly as possible. Using an incorrect PAYE reference number, warns HMRC, could result in penalties and charges even if an employer has paid on time. The use of on-line banking services can raise additional complications. These may default to a previous payment reference number so creating additional confusion. Employers must check this is right every time a payment is made to HMRC. How is that done? Simply by ensuring that the correct Accounts Office reference is used. This can be found on: • The letter HMRC issued on registered as an employer. • The front of their HMRC’s payment booklet • HMRC’s letter replacing that booklet • The Business Tax Account if they’ve already added Employer PAYE enrolment to it. If you are an employer not paying for the current period, then four additional characters should be added to the reference number indicating the year, the month or quarter the payment is for. Each tax period has a different payment reference number, so it’s important to make separate payments for each period. The process is a bit complicated but HMRC says it wants to make sure that employers get it right and avoid penalties, which is why it is encouraging businesses to use its ‘Pay now’ tool on GOV.UK to find the right reference number to use each time. So, as you are running your business this could be an additional burden to your already bulging admin basket. If you need help, get in touch today to find out how we can ease the payroll pain.

How do you like

your theatre?

For some a trip to the theatre is a pleasure and an escape. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the live action up close and personal. For me, it’s about something more – it’s the gift of a shared experience, strangers gathered together in a space, shoulder to shoulder, discovering stories, letting loose their emotions - ready for a good laugh or cry.

Here in Wisbech we are fortunate to still have a wonderful working theatre. Tucked away on Alexandra Road, the Angles Theatre is one of the country’s oldest little theatres, dating back to the late 1700s and is believed to have been built as part of the Lincoln theatre circuit. It’s our very own Georgian playhouse and arts venue, with two studios and bar space. The Angles Theatre is a place to go to discover people with similar interests, forming new, unexpected friendships. A charitable organisation, it is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, from the box office and bar, to backstage, administration and day-to-day accounting. The volunteer community being one of its proudest achievements. Another proud achievement is the 2022 NODA awards for our amateur productions, Winners of: Best Drama (Educating Rita), Best Pantomime (Dick Whittington), and best Musical (Shrek the Musical) including best technical and best overall production! Theatre offers amazing experiences for young people too, and the Angles Theatre doesn’t disappoint, it provides drama and dance classes via our sister organisation the Wisbech School of Performing Arts (WISPA).

The Ratz Young Company is a unique opportunity where members are treated as acting professionals. The company offers opportunities to collaborate, devise and work on productions the students select. Retaining a theatre in this small market town is an achievement in itself. Theatres have closed all over the country following the pandemic; however, the current Angles Theatre teams are looking to achieve success by working differently. This tiny community theatre is thinking big – is reaching out and working hard to ensure it delivers something special. And that’s where you all come in. Tell your theatre what you’d like to see, listen to and experience. What are the best platforms or places to share what’s coming up? The team at the Angles Theatre would love to hear from you – come along, enjoy a performance and chat to us after in the bar. Things have been tough recently and life can weigh us down, so the opportunity to switch off for a couple of hours, forget our problems and be transported into another world is very appealing.

Maybe if you haven’t given theatre a go, now is the time – try it, you might just like it!

Ratzcool is an exciting drama opportunity for young people from five-eighteen years. Classes follow a unique programme, with a range of qualifications, but having fun and building confidence is at the heart of what we do. KLSD, a specialist dance school, is fun, nurturing and inspiring. It offers classes in Ballet, Tap, Contemporary Modern Jazz, Theatrecraft and Street Jazz. Classes are available for all abilities, from ages two years upwards. Students are trained through the IDTA syllabi and are able to take examinations up to a professional level.

Thor: Love and Thunder

Prima Facie

Minions: The Rise Of Gru

The Railway Children Return

July Movies For You To Enjoy! Top Picks

The God of Thunder returns to our screens on July 8th to rock, roll, and fall in love. Thor: Love and Thunder finds Thor (Chris Hemsworth) on a journey unlike anything he's ever faced -- a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who -- to Thor's surprise – now holds the power to wield the hammer, Mjolnir. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to put a stop to Gorr’s bloodshed before it’s too late. Kya Clark, otherwise known as the Marsh Girl by the townspeople of Barkley Cove, is mysterious and wild. Abandoned by her family, Where the Crawdads Sing – released on July 22nd is a coming-of-age story of a young girl raised by the marshlands of North Carolina in the 1950s. This sweeping adaptation of Delia Owens’s bestselling debut novel of the same name will centre on Kya – played by the captivating star of Normal People Daisy Edgar-Jones – as her character becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a man who once pursued her.

Event Cinema

Jodie Comer makes her West End debut in the UK premiere of Suzie Miller’s award-winning play Prima Facie on July 21st as a young, brilliant barrister who comes face to face with an unexpected event, forcing her to confront the lines where the patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge. Prima Facie takes us to the heart of where emotion and experience collide with the rules of the game.

Family Favourites

From the biggest global animated franchise in history, comes the original story of how the world’s greatest supervillain first met his iconic Minions in Minions: The Rise Of Gru screening from July 1st. Gru is twelve years old, plotting to take over the world from his basement (which is not going particularly well) when he crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob and Otto – a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please. Together they join forces and build their first lair and design their first weapons. There will be plenty of laughter for all the family as we see the Minions attempt to learn Kung Fu and Gru discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends. Inspired by one of the most beloved British family films of all time, The Railway Children Return is an enchanting and heart-warming adventure for a new generation. Watch from July 15th to see Jenny Agutter resume her role as Bobbie from the original film – joined by Sheridan Smith, Tom Courtenay and John Bradley. It’s 1944 – as life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children – Lily, Pattie and Ted – are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth. The evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside when they discover injured American soldier Abe hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, and they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home. Do you suffer from discoloured or unsightly toenails?

A

re you going on holiday or to a summer event and can't bear to get your feet out? We can help you!

‘Toenail reconstruction’ is a cosmetic or medical procedure performed by a podiatrist. A specialist gel is layered either directly onto the nail or nail bed if no nail is present due to trauma or surgery. This procedure creates a brand-new nail or covers unsightly or misshapen nails so that the nail is more aesthetically pleasing. This is a brilliant way to cover up damaged or unsightly nails so you can show off your feet without embarrassment, however this is not a permanent solution. The length of time that the nail reconstruction lasts will vary from person to person. The new nail will generally last between four and six weeks but can last longer depending on how much of the nail is damaged; after this time the reconstructed nail is removed and reapplied.

The treatment is provided during a straightforward procedure that involves the podiatrist reducing the nail and removing as much of the diseased nail as possible. The toenail is cleaned to remove oil and disinfected, then a solution containing an anti-fungal is applied to the nail plate or nail bed to enhance the bonding of the gel. The podiatrist will then apply the gel in layers, with each layer being hardened under a UV light. As soon as the desired look and thickness has been achieved the nail is then filed and buffed smooth, with a high gloss layer applied if required. After the procedure, a reconstructed toenail may be treated in exactly the same way as you would treat a normal nail, this means that you can also apply nail varnish and use a nail varnish remover. This is a great way to help your feet look wonderful this summer. Contact us to see if this treatment could be suitable for you.

ere at Active Fenland, we strive to see members of the community living healthier lifestyles. As we age it becomes even more crucial that we remain active every day – reducing the risk of heart disease, falls, stroke, dementia, and osteoarthritis – to name some examples. However, the most important thing about physical activity is enjoying it as you do it! That’s why we aim to provide a whole range of different ways to get active, in the hope that everyone can find their way to a healthier lifestyle. Starting with something a little different, we are launching our first ever fun community Tea Dance! This event is ideal for anyone new to dancing wanting to learn a few steps, with a qualified dance instructor there to help, or any avid dancers keen to take advantage of the open dance floor! As the name suggests, tea and refreshments are provided at this FREE event on Friday, July 8th at 2pm-4pm at the Queen Mary Centre. See contact details at the bottom to let us know you will be attending! Forever Fit is another of our FREE sessions, a fun, welcoming session with a range of activities to try out/ get involved in, such as badminton, table tennis and new age kurling, followed by free tea and coffee at the Hudson Leisure Centre.

Finance

Government SUPPORT FOR SMEs There are four ways you can get financial support for your business, to help you invest and grow. 1) Claim up to £5000 with the Employment Allowance Employment Allowance is a tax relief which allows eligible businesses to reduce their National Insurance contributions (NICs) bills each year. You can claim this if you are a business, and your employer Class 1 National Insurance liabilities were less than £100,000 in the previous tax year. 2) Get a discount of up to £5000 on software, with Help to Grow Help to Grow: Digital is a UK-wide governmentbacked scheme that aims to help you choose, buy and adopt digital technologies that will help you grow your business. Eligible businesses can receive a fifty percent discount on buying new software worth up to £5000 per SME, alongside free impartial advice and guidance about what digital technology is best suited to boost your business performance. The Help to Grow: Management scheme provides small businesses with access to world-class business expertise on everything from leadership and financial management to marketing and digital adoption. This is delivered through leading UK business schools, alongside one-on-one support from a business mentor – and is 90% funded by the Government. To be eligible, you must be a UK-based SME, actively trading for at least one year and have a total of between five and 249 employees. 3) Get up to half off your business rates From April this year, small retail, hospitality, and leisure businesses can benefit from 50% off their business rates bills.

The business rates multiplier has also been frozen for another year. This is used to calculate how much business rates should be paid; it usually rises with inflation each year. The business rates multipliers for 2022 to 2023 are 49.9 pence for the small business multiplier and 51.2 pence for the standard multiplier. 4) Invest in your business with Super-deduction and Annual Investment Allowance To spur business investment, the super-deduction allows companies to cut their tax bill by twenty-five pence for every £1 they invest in any qualifying machinery and equipment. This can include the purchase of computers, most commercial vehicles and office furniture. The temporary £1 million limit for the Annual Investment Allowance has also been extended to the end of March 2023. This had been due to revert to £200,000 at the start of 2022. The Annual Investment Allowance allows businesses to spend up to £1 million on qualifying business equipment and deduct in-year its full cost before they calculate their taxable profits. Both tax breaks remain available for firms to take advantage of until the end of March 2023, by incurring qualifying expenditure before then. If you need support in accessing any of these schemes to help your business, please get in touch.
