Welcome to your May issue...

What better way to welcome you all, than with a smile? Mid-May to Mid-June every year happens to be “National Smile Month”, one of the U.K’s largest and longest-running campaigns to promote good oral health. Now over forty years old, this year’s events will be taking place between May 17th and June 17th.

In a world where plenty of things seem to succeed in making us feel perhaps inadequate and sometimes sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s always much easier to smile than it is to frown. Remember … life is like a mirror- we get the best results when we smile at it!

Our May issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of spring and those long, warmer days of summer just around the corner, so smile away, and let’s all get ourselves ready for the fabulous long weekend, early next month, to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

Claire x For many homeowners, this time of year normally necessitates time spent outside to carry out maintenance work on one’s property or garden after the winter.

For myself, this year’s pressing task was to paint the back fence. It will need replacing in the nottoo-distant future but for now my wife and I thought treating it would suffice and help spruce it up for the summer.

We tackled different panels and soon I seemed to have swept ahead in terms of panels completed. Feeling rather pleased with myself I was somewhat shocked a couple of hours later when the fence started to dry, for my handiwork looked a pale comparison to that of my wife’s and needed another coat. Clutching at straws, I suggested that perhaps she had used a darker colour of fence paint, but after checking the tins, unfortunately I had to concede that she had in fact just done a better job and had the honour of painting the decking on her own…

May Gardening Tips

ay can be a month of extremes so be prepared for late frosts, sunny dry spells, and/or high winds.

The biggest threat is to the newly emerging seedlings and plants that have recently been transplanted.

If it is hot, make sure they are well watered and give them some shade protection or protect them from drying winds. If there is a late frost, cover your tender crops with fleece, bubble wrap or similar.

Seeds that were sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot and parsnips will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row and it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots.

Earth up potatoes when the leaves are about 20cm tall; draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high and this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing regularly, preferably in dry weather so they cannot re-establish themselves.

Aphids never seem to go away but you can control them by doing any of the following: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washing-up liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Do not dilute before spraying on plants.

• Peppermint, spearmint, and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant

(or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot.

• Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums.

• Spray the affected plants with soapy water (diluted washing up liquid) or squash the flies with your thumb and finger.

Or you can buy organic pesticide.

Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately.

Indoors, sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Put up bean and pea supports.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• Put some straw underneath developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew.

WHY HAVING AN UP-TO-DATE AND VALID WILL IS IMPORTANT

thought this month I would write about the importance of having an up-todate will in place, because if you die with no will in place it will mean that your money, property and possessions will be distributed in accordance with the laws of intestacy and strict guidelines must be followed. Your estate is then dealt with according to these rules which may be contrary to your wishes.

Under the rules of intestacy only married or civil partners and other close relatives can inherit. So cohabiting or common law partners who are not married cannot inherit under the rules of intestacy.

Having a valid will in place protects the most important people in your life because it ensures that those people inherit in accordance with your wishes.

A will is a legal document that sets out your instructions and wishes and what should happen after you have died.

The most common reasons to make sure you have a will in place are: 1) If you have young children under the age of eighteen you can appoint their guardian in your will.

2) If someone is dependent on you, you can say who takes over from you. If you don’t have a will in place, then the family courts would have to get involved and they may appoint someone that you may not agree with.

3) As well as appointing the right person, you can dictate how your dependants are to be provided for financially. You can set up will trusts etc. and for more information on this please contact me.

4) If you have stepchildren, then again you may want to make provisions for them.

5) If you are not married, then you may wish to provide for your partner and make sure they are protected.

6) Avoid family disputes.

7) You can appoint a trusted person to administer your will, more commonly referred to as an executor.

These are just some of the reasons why a will is an important document so again please do call me to discuss further as I am limited to how much information I can give you here. Also having a valid will in place makes things easier for your loved ones at a very difficult time.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

By Bridget Hunter INTERESTING FACTS I was watching a TV programme where a wedding planner was talking about the proposed changes to how and where a marriage can take place in England and it appears that weddings will be allowed to take place in any venue with or without a roof.

This seems to me to be looking back hundreds of years. In the distant past, weddings were held anywhere. making keeping track of marriages very difficult. The Government at the time decided to make rules regarding where weddings could take place and who could officiate at them.

The Hardwick Marriage Act in 1753 came into force on March 25th, 1754; it was to prevent clandestine marriages. The Act required weddings to only take place in a Church of England church to be carried out by a priest and a parish register was to be kept showing all the details. Only Quakers and Jews were exempt from the rules. There was also a fixed time when weddings could be performed, the latest time was 3.30pm (later changed to 6pm).

Later, registrars were appointed and they could officiate in other churches, and in a registered office.

In recent years other places have been registered as wedding venues, such as hotels etc, then later anywhere with a roof like a summer house, but they all had to be registered or licensed. The recent proposals say weddings can be officiated anywhere, so a big step back in time to before 1753. I am imagining some of the strangest places a wedding can be performed, all very weird. Wedding planners will be competing to arrange the strangest ones.

I guess the next step back in time is to make Handfast marriages legal. A Handfast marriage was when a couple declared in a public place to witnesses that they intended to be husband and

wife. Their pledge of marriage often made fast but the ceremonial binding of hands with a ribbon.

MONTHLY MEETINGS are held on the fourth Thursday of the month (except August and December). This is not always the last Thursday of the month. We meet in Wisbech Library from 7pm-9pm. The meeting is open to visitors. Our April 28th meeting was due to feature Sue PAUL with her very interesting talk entitled The Long Paper Trail. Our May meeting on Thursday, May 26th will be special meeting which at the time of writing it is still in the planning stage. Our speaker in June will be Mike PETTY, the well-known Cambridgeshire historian.

OUR COMPUTER RESEARCH SESSIONS. These are open to anyone interested in researching their family history. We can help with your research no matter where your family originated.

Our experienced researchers give instructions and/ or help with research whichever is required.

We hold our sessions twice a month in two different venues. In Wisbech Library every FIRST TUESDAY of each month from 10am-12noon. Plus, on the second Monday of the month a small team will be in Baytree Garden Centre In Hilgay near Downham Market, in their Barn Restaurant from 11am-2.30pm offering visitors help with research all for FREE. We can be available at other venues, if invited but we do need WiFi. Please contact us if you need help.

OUR SPEAKERS. Our speakers are enjoying being about again, visiting local groups and clubs to share their stories. They have recently attended meetings in Wisbech, Surfleet, St Clements and Cross Keys. Our talks include ‘The Fun of Family History’, about a long journey by land, air and sea to find family roots ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza’, unravelling a story of lies and deceit, ’The Ups & Downs of Being a Magistrate’, a real-life experience, and ‘The Sad Tale of The Blacksmiths Family’, the story of a great great grandfather.

The news broke of Dr Dimock’s death in Wisbech. The people’s doctor was dead. He had been persecuted from the day he arrived here.

Tax Year Never Ends Keith Day

Among the many questions we are asked, those relating to tax lead the field. Since Self-Assessment was introduced in 1997, there has been a phenomenon known as the ‘annual tax season’. Now traditional, it’s when our tax department works long days and late nights completing returns up to the annual January 31 deadline.

It’s not over just yet because an important aspect of the whole process is advising how much tax is due and when tax is paid under SelfAssessment. At present tax can be paid twice a year on January 31 and July 31. The latter is a payment on account.

When can you complete and submit your tax return? For the majority the tax software used will be available usually by the end of April and you should have your employment information by mid-May with other forms of income from third parties perhaps in June.

If everything is provided, processed, and submitted before July 31 then, perhaps your payment on account can be reduced. If this is possible then you benefit from a cash flow advantage. Here are the steps for a tax return 2021 - 22: • Completed and submitted before July 31, 2022.

• Payments-on-account for January and July 2022 can be reduced if required.

• A balancing payment in January 2023 then becomes clear.

• Payments on account for January and July 2023 will also be known.

Cashflow is obviously important and having this information to hand is really helpful.

The next few weeks are crucial when it comes to gathering tax information and, if cashflow is an issue, the earlier you can analyse and interpret those figures, your return can be processed and submitted. It also sets up a platform for further discussions and advice.

What the Spring Statement MEANS TO YOU Against a backdrop of rising inflation, Chancellor Rishi Sunak presented his first Spring Statement on Wednesday, March 23rd, 2022. Kayleigh Wilson ACCA CTA, tax specialist at Stephenson Smart accountants, analyses the main announcements…

Increase in the National Insurance threshold and Lower Profit Limit

There had been speculation that the Chancellor would try and make some kind of tax cut to answer his critics that he was not doing enough to ease the cost of living rises. His solution was to announce an increase in the annual National Insurance Primary Threshold and the Lower Profits Limit in his Spring Statement, to take effect from July 2022.

However, the temporary increase in National Insurance rates (the health and care levy) still came into effect from April 2022.

Income Tax Reduction

The Chancellor announced the reduction in the basic rate of Income Tax for non-savings, nondividend income for taxpayers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to 19% from April 2024. This change will be implemented in a future Finance Bill.

Increased Employment Allowance

Employers are able to claim the Employment Allowance which reduces their employer Class 1 NICs each year.

In the Spring Statement, the Chancellor announced an increase from April 2022 of £1000 for eligible employers to reduce their employer NICs by up to £5000 per year.

The allowance can be claimed against only one PAYE scheme, even if the business runs multiple schemes. Connected businesses, such as companies under the control of the same person or persons, are only entitled to one Employment Allowance between them.

There was an above average amount of changes to allowances and tax bands for a Spring Statement.

CLARION CALL TO HELP READ TO SUCCEED

A

love of reading lasts a lifetime.

Whether reading a recipe to bake a cake, following the news of your favourite sports team, or indulging in an escape from reality with a classic tale of adventure, it’s a simple pleasure that can educate, inspire, or transport you to new places.

Reading is the gateway to unlocking local talent.

When teachers first raised with me the difficulty of encouraging children to read throughout the summer holidays and how many fail to make progress in their literacy skills during this period, I wanted to do what I could to help inspire a love for reading which has always been a strong interest of mine.

Our local Read to Succeed campaign was created and now, seven years on, it’s still going strong. Each year we aim to raise enough money to buy a new summer holiday reading book for every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire. Children often begin to read more independently around the age of eight or nine which is why teachers suggested Year 4 to receive a new book to take home.

studying for their GCSEs! This year’s theme, in association with the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries, is Gadgeteers. It aims to encourage children to discover the amazing science and innovation behind the world around us.

Last year, Read to Succeed distributed more than 1500 books to Year 4s and even some Year 5s thanks to the generosity of local businesses, charities, councillors and personal donations.

One of our strong supporters is Clarion Futures, the charitable foundation of Clarion Housing Group, which has given us £3000 again this year.

Phil Miles, director of Clarion Futures, said: “We’ve supported Steve’s Read to Succeed campaign for many years and are proud to be the first to donate this year. Enabling children to continue their learning through the summer holidays by giving them access to new books makes such a difference, and we hope that by supporting this campaign we can help inspire the next generation to get reading.”

Donations are collected during April, May and June so books can be purchased and delivered to schools before the summer break. To support our local literacy campaign please contact adam.fairbrother@parliament.uk

Potato Salad Warmer days can only mean one thing - barbecues! Jersey Royals are firmly in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe...

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

Ingredients Serves 6 1.25kg new potatoes, halved 10g dill, chopped

• If using a gas barbecue, pre-heat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

s it’s nearing six months since Windows 11 was released, I thought we’d take a look at some of its upcoming new features and as well at some that were due to be released with the original version, but which, for various reasons, are still pending release.

Android Apps: These, along with the Amazon App store for them, should arrive in the second half of the year. This will bring the Kindle App and more than one thousand games and utilities with it.

Folders in the Start Menu: Why we couldn’t have had folders in the Start Menu on release day seems like a massive oversight, however over the next few months this should arrive and make managing our apps and shortcuts a little easier.

Improved Account Management: If you want to check on subscriptions for

Xbox, Office etc or change a password, you currently have to open the settings page in Windows 11, which opens a web browser page on Microsoft’s website where you have to log on once more in order to make amendments etc. This is going to change, allowing you to be able to do it in settings, without taking you to a website.

Drag and Drop Support for the Windows 11 Taskbar: You’ll be able to drag files straight to apps on the taskbar, such as Outlook for adding attachments, or image editors like paint or photos to make amendments, which should make working on multiple things at once easier.

User interface improvements: Currently, the pop out section for audio, brightness, Wi-Fi etc in the bottom right-hand corner is a hot mess, so thankfully it looks like this is going to be improved.

Mail, Calendar and People: This update is long overdue! In Windows 8, the in-built Windows Mail app was awful, it got a minor tweak in Windows 10 and is still the same on Windows 11 (we’ve been pushing either Mozilla Thunderbird (free) Outlook (not free) for years).

Apparently, this update is going to be a replacement and will be offered to both Windows 10, 11 and Apple macOS users.

Hopefully this update will provide a way to back up settings and contact details (i.e., email addresses etc) so that you can transfer them from one machine to another, like Thunderbird or Outlook.
