Welcome to your November issue...

It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!) as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more.

It’s at times like this that we’ll realise just what awful effects the COVID pandemic has had on everyone, having missed out on last year’s preparations and excitement. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

The Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On in Bourne on November 27th, alongside other similar events in neighbouring towns, will help add to this long-overdue feeling that things are now getting back to normal.

Recently while walking my dog, we were startled by another hound suddenly launching itself at us.

Surprised, my best friend lurched sideways into me causing me to stub one of my shoes on a kerbstone tearing off most of the sole.

The next day I searched for some new footwear and discovered a pair of working boots that I had been given around five years ago but had never worn.

Next-day I put them on and set off for my usual five-mile walk with absolutely no trouble. However, the following day I realised the tight boots had cut into my feet and legs in a few places.

As I was also suffering from a bad back – probably caused by my dog’s frequent, sudden changes of direction and my spending too much time hunched over a keyboard – the next few days saw me taking mini steps and grimacing and looking every one of my many years.

Thankfully, a spell of wearing two pairs of thick socks, the softening of the boot leather and the easing of my back has meant my normal, youthful, jaunty walk has returned!

Time to make the switch to AN ELECTRIC VEHICLE?

T

he pressure to be eco-friendly impacts every aspect of our lives and is also fast becoming the case with regard to the vehicles we drive.

By 2030 (only nine years away!) there will be a ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars.

In addition to helping the planet, and not having to queue at pumps, there are significant financial benefits to driving electric.

In 2019, Chris Goad, partner at Stephenson Smart’s Wisbech office, made the decision to switch his company vehicle to a Tesla.

“It is most certainly the best decision I have made in terms of my business travel, but also my family travel. I think there’s quite a lot of misconception around the expense of running one, the concern over charging points and the mileage ranges.”

Tax benefits In April 2020, it was announced by the Government that it had introduced a zero Benefit In Kind tax rate for pure electric company cars in 2020/21.

This Benefit in Kind is set to stay low for electric company cars until March 2025, with the rate increasing to one percent during 2021/22 and by two percent in 2022/2023 – staying that way until 2025.

Range Mileage ranges have now increased, with many new models offering a range approaching around three hundred miles, putting any fears of not having enough fuel in the tank to bed.

With the steady rise of charging points, more electric vehicle users are also choosing to install their own charging points at home.

After initial installation, it’s proving to be the cheapest time to recharge, and the most convenient.

Chris said: “I don’t ever worry about charging the car because I have a home charging point in my garage. If we are going on holiday I can easily find somewhere to charge using an app called Zap Map, which is so easy to navigate.

“I think being educated and aware about electric vehicles is really important as we are moving towards a greener future. There are so many advantages to a business by making this type of investment, I certainly wouldn’t go back to diesel or petrol now.”

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

By Bridget Hunter Our September meeting was our twentieth AGM; the chairman kept to our tradition with the business part of our meeting lasting just over twelve minutes. This was followed by drinks and cake to celebrate, then an address by our founder outlining how our society was formed and the highlights of the past twenty years. Meetings are on the fourth Thursday of each month except December and August in Wisbech Library from 7pm-9pm.

RESEARCH SESSIONS Our two sessions are led by our experienced researchers offering help and advice to anyone attending. They are held on the first Tuesday of the month in Wisbech Library from 10am-12 noon and the second Monday of each month in Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay off the A10. Find us in the restaurant from 11am-2.30pm. Both sessions are open to anyone interested in family research. We are available to attend other venues or events; if there is a Wi-Fi link we can do the research.

INTERESTING FACTS FROM THE PAST My great grandparents, Benjamin born 1853 and Charlotte born 1857, were well educated, although coming from crofting families on the Orkney islands. They made sure their twelve children were educated, more importantly their six daughters, so they could read, write and keep accounts to run the house and business for their husbands and also to teach their children.

There was no national system of education before the 19th century and only a small section of the child population received any schooling.

Opportunities for a formal education were restricted mainly to town grammar schools, charity schools and ‘dame’ schools.

The sons of middle-class families attended grammar schools or private academies. When Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837, the only schools available for poor children were charity and church schools or ‘dame’ schools set up by unqualified teachers in their own homes.

Ragged schools originated in the Sunday School founded in 1780 by Robert Raikes in Gloucester, who taught children to read so that they could read the Bible. Then a Portsmouth cobbler, John Pounds, gathered groups of children to play with his disabled nephew, and by 1818 he was teaching them to read from the Bible. By 1844, nineteen ragged schools joined to form a Ragged School Union, headed by Lord Shaftesbury. By 1870 there were two hundred and fifty ragged schools in London and more than one hundred in the provinces.

The school leaving age has changed many times, increasing from ten years old in 1880 to eighteen in 2015. The 1880 Act made education compulsory until the age of ten. In 1893 it was increased to eleven and the right to an education was extended to the deaf and blind children, then to thirteen in 1899. The 1918 Act made education compulsory up until fourteen years and in 1939 the Government raised it again to fifteen, but this was delayed due to the onset of World War Two and so took effect from late 1947, increasing to sixteen in 1972.

entenary Baptist Church, Fenland is highlighting the issue of fuel poverty following Warm Homes Week which was held on September 27th-30th.

The church runs a Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre which offers free debt help for clients in the local area.

Remembering

THE FALLEN Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 14th this year, is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

W

e remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph The National Service of Remembrance, held at The Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, provides the nation with a physical reminder of all those who have served and sacrificed, with British and Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, airmen and women represented, together with members of the emergency services and civilians.

It is expected that Prince William and Prince Harry will be laying wreaths on behalf of HM The Queen, alongside Members of the Cabinet, Opposition Party leaders, former Prime Ministers, the Mayor of London and other ministers.

Representatives of the Armed Forces, Fishing Fleets and Merchant Air and Navy will be there, as well as faith communities and High Commissioners of Commonwealth countries.

The Festival of Remembrance Every year the Royal British Legion hosts the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, a commemorative event dedicated to all those who have served and sacrificed from Britain and the Commonwealth. To mark

one hundred years since the collective national Remembrance traditions came together for the first time, we will be remembering the military and civilian, the old and young, and the British and Commonwealth men and women who have fought wars, disasters and pandemics to protect and defend Britain.

This year, the RBL are working towards a fully realised Festival of Remembrance, which will be held on Saturday November 13th, with performances at 2pm and 7pm.

Poppy Appeal 2021 This year's Poppy Appeal launches on Thursday October 28th, with several ways to donate, including cash, contactless, text, or online via a QR code quick link. Every poppy makes a difference to the lives of our Armed Forces community. The RBL collectors have been at the heart of the Poppy Appeal for one hundred years, and as COVID-19 restrictions ease, they are back in local communities to raise vital funds for the Armed Forces community.

PECT’s CHESS Service is helping residents to keep warm and safe

W

ith the decrease in Universal Credit payments, the energy crisis and the colder weather starting to hit, it is the most vulnerable people that will be affected.

Cambridgeshire Home Energy Support Service (CHESS), a service provided by environmental charity PECT and Cambridgeshire ACRE, is supporting vulnerable residents in northern Cambridgeshire with free energy advice and support.

The free service can offer you a wide range of support, from providing top-up fuel vouchers and debt relief of up to £500, to providing small home improvements and accessing additional support such as grants.

CHESS has recently helped support an individual who is a full-time carer for her son and was struggling financially with electricity bills and her oil central heating.

Karen Igho, Health and Wellbeing Lead at PECT, said: “When she was referred onto us, she hadn’t had any oil for two weeks and had been relying on electric heaters which were costing a lot of money on her prepayment meter.

“In response to this, a tank of oil was ordered the same day of the call and was delivered a few days later. We also applied for a Stay Well Grant on her behalf. This was approved a week later, and we were able to top-up the electricity prepayment meter which will last for a significant amount of time.

“We have also provided several energy-saving items, including energy-saving light bulbs, a draught excluder and draught tape.”

This has had a significant impact on the comfort and quality of life, the full-time carer said: “If I hadn’t been referred, I would never have known the help was out there. We have been in difficult circumstances and this has made such a huge difference for me mentally in the past few weeks. My son is also happier now that we can have the heating on.”

The Other Clarkson – part two John went down with the fever and had violent headaches. It was so bad he ordered Wickham to take over command and he went below. For a whole month he lay helpless with a raging fever and Dr Charles Taylor feared John was dying.

The men chopped trees down with axes to make a clearing for the settlement whilst the women did the cooking. They cleared all the way until they got to a large cotton tree. Small huts were erected before the rainy season and in a month they had a small town. It wasn’t all easy for John.

Peters, one of the immigrants, tried to take power from him, but succumbed to a bout of fever and died, leaving John to look after Freetown without opposition.

He lay still for twenty-four hours, completely motionless. Dr Taylor sadly pronounced John Clarkson dead. They had called John their Moses, but had they forgotten that Moses led the Israelites to the Promised Land but died before they got there? Was this going to happen again?

The news quickly spread amongst the other fourteen boats. John had saved them. They would not forget him. With a sad and heavy heart, they prepared his body to be committed to the sea…

They were just about to let his body plunge into the water when one person noticed a movement.

They quickly cut the canvas shroud open. He was moving. He was ALIVE! They rapidly took him below… their Moses was going to take them to their promised land.

After a few weeks, they put him on a mattress and lowered him into a small boat. They then took him along to each of the fourteen boats and as he approached each one, they all crowded to the side of the boat and cheered and clapped and shouted and fired their muskets.

Finally, they arrived at Freetown where John found a letter inviting him to be the very first Governor there under the Sierra Leone Company. He was still weak from his illness but readily agreed. They had travelled nearly four thousand miles in fifty-two days. Out of the 1200 that travelled only sixty-three died, some of fever and some of other causes. In 1793, he came home to Britain leaving Dawes in charge as the next Governor. Lieutenant John Clarkson never went to sea again or back to Sierra Leone but found work on the land, living for a further thirty-five years.

He married Susan Lee and had a family of ten children including one set of twins.

Sadly, six died in childhood, with their first baby only living for three weeks. He looked after lime and chalk pits for the Whitbreads and then he went on to look after a small provincial bank. Both jobs were so different to his earlier life.

In the winter of 1827-28 he suffered chest pains and difficulty in breathing and then in early spring he had a leg injury. On April 2nd he felt uncomfortable and lay on the sofa. There it was that he died, just two days before his sixty-fourth birthday. He was buried a week later at St Mary’s church, Woodbridge.

John had been a good and fair Governor, believing in discipline and good order but was also known for encouraging the inhabitants of Freetown. He became one of them, often attending their church services.

Although hardly known in Britain, John ‘Moses’ Clarkson is still remembered every year in Sierra Leone, with thanks and gratitude for their freedom.

Workplace Initiatives Scott Bishop As we emerge from the pandemic more details are materialising about the strategies designed to create employment and work opportunities for young people. There are two programmes and each has a closing date just over a month apart.

The Chancellor told the Conservative Party Conference last month that funding for the Kickstart Scheme, which encourages employers to create jobs for 1624 year-olds, will now be extended until March 2022.

The scheme covers 100% of National Minimum Wage and offers six-month jobs for 25 hours-a-week for young people who are currently claiming Universal Credit and are at risk of long-term unemployment.

If you are an employer you have until December 17 this year to apply. It means that not only will you have a young person working for you, funded by the Government, you will also be supporting them to develop transferable skills that are aimed at increasing their chances of longer-term sustained employment.

Details also became clearer in the Autumn Budget on the second initiative with Chancellor Sunak confirming that the government will continue, until January 31, 2022, to offer £3,000 incentive payments to employers who take on apprentices.

This means that you can apply for a payment of £3,000 for new apprentices of any age who have an employment start date between April 1, 2021 September 30, 2021. Importantly, it differs from Apprenticeship Levy Funds, so you can spend it on anything to support your organisation’s costs. For example, on uniforms, your apprentice’s travel or their salary and it does not have to be repaid.

To receive the payment, an application must be submitted for each eligible apprentice using your Apprenticeship Service Account.

MAKING PROGRESS IN GOVERNMENT AND CONSTITUENCY By Steve Barclay MP

S

uch a lot has happened since last month, I’m not sure where to start!

Firstly, I’d like to thank all those constituents who sent me their best wishes following the Government reshuffle. My new role as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minster for the Cabinet Office means I now focus on supporting the Prime Minister, advising on developing and implementing policy, and driving forward government business with involvement in various cabinet committees and taskforces.

There’s much to do and it’s great to meet new teams and re-connect with former colleagues.

include a new open-plan ticketing hall, waiting area, modern toilets, retail unit and an extension to the car park. This will make for a much more welcoming site for visitors and commuters. Manea train station users will also soon see an improvement with a new onehundred-space car park due to open shortly.

Also, it’s fantastic to see the continuing progress at Kings Dyke. The embankment that will carry the road to the railway bridge from the eastern road tie-in is now complete.

You can also see the progress made on the eastern roundabout now kerbs have been installed and work is underway on the ducts that will house the electrical cable for the street lighting. Construction is complete on the drainage systems for the portion of the road north of the railway bridge and the focus is now switching to constructing the drainage systems at the western end of the scheme.

This £32 million project for a new road and bridge will make a world of difference to residents and businesses when complete at the end of next year.

Of course, none of this takes away from my role representing my constituents in North East Cambridgeshire, and campaigning on your behalf on issues such as healthcare and my drive to keep treatment and NHS services as close to home as possible; supporting local sporting teams and initiatives to improve facilities; ensuring transport schemes such as Kings Dyke, Wisbech Rail and dualling the A47 maintain momentum; and fighting the mega incinerator plans for Wisbech.

Simple comfort food doesn’t come in a finer form than a baked potato. Perfect after a cold night watching the fireworks! Stuff them with bacon, cheese and soured cream and dig in!

Method

1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7.

Rinse the potatoes, then sprinkle all over with sea salt. Put the potatoes directly onto the oven shelf and bake for about 1 hour until crisp on the outside and soft inside when tested with a skewer.

Serves 4

4 baking potatoes Sea salt for sprinkling 100g bacon lardons 80g unsalted butter, cubed 80g grated Cheddar, plus an extra 2 tbsp for topping 4 tbsp soured cream, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve Sourced from www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk

2 Meanwhile, fry the bacon lardons in a non-stick frying pan until crisp.

3 Once the potatoes are ready, turn the oven to grill, remove the potatoes from the oven and transfer to a baking tray. Slice off the tops (hold the potatoes steady using a clean tea towel), then carefully scoop the soft potato centres into a bowl. Add the butter, 80g cheese and soured cream to the bowl and mix well. Stir in the chives and lardons, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the cheesy filling back into the potato shells, then top with the extra cheese.

4 Grill the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden and bubbling hot. Serve with the extra soured cream and chives.

New biographical psychological drama, Spencer, arrives on our screens on November 5th in a powerful portrait of the people’s princess, played by Kristen Stewart. It’s Christmas at the Queen’s Sandringham estate, but things are far from cheery as Diana decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles. Set in December 1991, a year before Charles and Diana announced their separation to the world, Spencer is a haunting reimagining of a tense time in the royal relationship as things begin to disintegrate.

But when it seems that the magic surrounding the Encanto is in danger, Mirabel may be the magical family’s only hope.

Tennis biopic, King Richard, is served to us on the 19th, telling the story of the young Williams sisters through their father. Richard, played by Will Smith, is a dedicated dad whose particular methods and constant commitment helped his daughters go from Compton to Centre Court. Produced by Venus and Serena themselves, alongside sister Isha, this is an inspirational story of an extraordinary family that we think could be an ace.

House of Gucci struts onto our screens on the 24th, inspired by the family behind the Italian fashion house. Spanning three decades of love, betrayal, greed, revenge and ultimately murder,

WINDOWS 11 PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

Windows 11 is here!! And more importantly Windows 10 is still here until October 25th, 2025. So, what should you do? Stick to Windows 10 or upgrade? If you do feel the need to jump straight into Windows 11 with both feet, how do you do it?

Firstly, you need to check whether your PC can actually run Windows 11. As a rule of thumb, if your PC is under four years old and it meets all of the new hardware requirements to upgrade, it is likely that you can. Before you begin, however, do back up all your important data onto an external hard drive or a cloud-based system like OneDrive or Dropbox. Then all you should have to do is hit the magic button. Then you should be able to sit back and watch your PC magically transform like a butterfly into a new sparkly

Windows 11 PC (note that no actual magic will happen as it will be like the twice-yearly updates that Microsoft have been rolling out for the past six years, although Microsoft have stated that they will be dropping those to once a year on Windows 11).

If your Windows PC or laptop is more than four years old, you don’t have to worry about upgrading to Windows 11 just now because you can’t!

Even if you do manage to get it shoehorned on there (and this is easy enough to do), you shouldn’t. Microsoft has stated that at some point in the future all unsupported hardware will not get access to Windows updates, meaning it will not receive any security updates whatsoever. So please, just don’t do it! Windows 10 is fine for another four years.

homes, some of which will and some of which won’t upgrade to the new version of Windows. We will gradually start to manually upgrade those that will over the next few weeks. However, we are not worried about those that won’t upgrade to 11 just yet as we still have four years to do it.

We have been experimenting with test versions of Windows 11 and there’s quite a lot we like, such as the new start menu (although I did relocate the start button on my own PC from the middle to the bottom left-hand corner like it has been for the last twenty-six years!!). We also like the fact that eventually we’ll be able to run Android Apps on our PCs and the snap layout feature looks pretty cool. We’ll be discussing more features and tips over the coming weeks.
