There may still be a lot of caution around as we move slowly back to our pre-March 2020 lives. School “bubbles” are set to burst as our youngsters return to their studies this month – massive congratulations to those who achieved success in their external exams in the summer and good luck in the years to come.

What better way to boost a whole country’s spirit (and realisation that we’re maybe not too bad a country) than to have witnessed the recent Tokyo Olympics? Amongst all the fabulous performances, one in particular stands out for me - Charlotte Worthington, after falling off her bike but then having another go at an almost impossible trick and landing a BMX gold – if at first you don’t succeed!

Hoping you all enjoy our offering for this month, as nights start to pull in and “you know what” is a little over a hundred days away!

Claire x With COVID restrictions having largely been removed for those people fortunate enough to have been double-jabbed, many will have looked to take advantage by taking – or planning – their summer holidays, with most hoping for some much-needed sun.

This year’s summer has unfortunately largely been a washout with rainy, gloomy days only briefly punctuated by sunshine. Like many people, we have some garden furniture which we look to use during the summer months, but as I once again put the cushions back into the shed the other day to avoid yet another downpour of biblical proportions, I realised that they had been out for a full 24-hour period on only one occasion this year!

However, when one sees the damage and heartache caused by the high temperatures and the resulting fires in mainland Europe and the USA, perhaps the Fenland summer of 2021 doesn’t seem that bad after all…

Maybe you are avoiding certain situations.

Maybe you’re noticing muscle tension. Maybe you are experiencing panic attacks. You might feel that your anxiety is getting out of control, that your worries are starting to take over.

Anxiety is our body’s natural reaction to a threat.

Our body automatically goes into ‘fight or flight’ mode, where our heart starts to beat faster, and our blood starts pumping extra oxygen to our muscles. Our body produces adrenaline, giving us the strength to either fight the threat, or get away from it. The problem is our brain doesn’t always know the difference between a real threat and a perceived one. So, sometimes, we go into ‘fight or flight’ when our bodies don’t need all that extra energy, as there is nothing to fight or to flee from. All that extra energy has nowhere to go and it can present itself as anxiety.

Back-to-school Supplies

I

t seems as if the children are only just out of school when adverts start popping up for backto-school supplies. Whether it’s uniform, stationery or new lunch bags and water bottles, these tips will help you shop savvy to save pounds while getting everything you need for the kids.

Look at what you’ve got already

from the council if you’re on certain benefits via gov.uk/helpschool-clothing-costs

The kids were in and out of school so much over the last year, so what you’ve already got might still be in good nick. If uniforms fit and there’s stationery in the kids’ pencil cases, then don't feel under pressure to spend on new stuff just because it’s that time of year. Get the kids involved too – teach them savvy shopping and saving skills to set them up for success in the future.

Outgrown uniform?

If your kids have outgrown their uniform and it’s still in good condition, consider organising a uniform swap-shop. You can bet that lots of other parents will thank you for it. Maybe there’s already something set up in your area – do a quick online search to see what uniform swap-shops may be available for your kids’ schools. This is also a great way to get cheaper uniform if your child is moving schools this year.

Make a list

Make a list of anything else you might need to get. Whatever needs updating, it’s always a good idea to write it all down in advance. That way you’re less likely to forget something or be caught out by impulse buys.

Schools often provide new starters with a list of what’s needed but try to get in touch with other parents before shelling out cash for every item. There may be some things on the list that are nice-to-haves but aren't essential.

Ways to save on stationery

Why spend pounds on notebooks, pens and pencil cases when you could spend pennies? Often high street stationery stores can be costly and you end up paying for brands or fancy designs, so don’t be drawn in. Budget stores often offer a wide range of back-

Label everything

If you’re worrying about how to pay for school dinners for your children, consider packed lunches. There are some great healthy recipes that you could use and if you plan ahead, it could be a cheaper alternative.

RESIDENTS FIGHT INCINERATOR PLANS

T

he enormous incinerator proposed in Wisbech is completely unsuitable and I continue to lead opposition to it. During the formal public consultation period this summer I have met many residents and local businesses who are strongly against the scheme.

It’s a completely unsuitable development, as I told the developer at one of their public consultation events at the Rosmini Centre.

I handed over a local petition with more than seventy-seven pages and more than three thousand signatures and since then even more people have signed up at www.stopfenlandincinerator.co.uk. I’d like to thank the many residents who came out to register their opposition and I will continue to fight for constituents against this flawed proposal.

By the time you read this, back-to-school will be in full swing, as I know first-hand from my own primary school children. But as the nights slowly start to draw in, I wanted to encourage those, particularly younger constituents, who have not yet been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to sign up to protect themselves and those they care about. TRANSFORMATION Before the summer break I was delighted to visit both Cromwell Community College in Chatteris and Neale-Wade Academy in March. Cromwell Community College’s £14 million transformation to become the first all-through school in Cambridgeshire is impressive. Executive Headteacher Jane Horn told me about the progress of the college and we had a look at the new buildings, including an additional twelve secondary teaching classrooms as well as science labs, sports pitches and play areas.

At Neale-Wade Academy, I was taken on a tour by senior prefects and it was great to have

such an engaged and engaging group with a positive mix of challenge and constructive suggestions. It was also good to hear from Principal, Graham Horn about the excellent work staff in Neale-Wade, as indeed staff across schools in our constituency, have been doing to continue teaching amidst the challenges of the pandemic.

Skills training and apprenticeships are more important than ever as we recover from the pandemic and level up across the country, so it was great to join a key stage in the £3.16 million building work at Stainless Metalcraft in Chatteris with the formal sod cutting. Commercial Director, Martin Martin Lawrence and the whole team at Metalcraft have done an amazing job in developing apprenticeships over many years.

The new facility is due to be completed by Spring 2022 and will provide between eighty and 130 apprentices each year.

IVF TREATMENT Finally, it’s welcome news that NHS-funded IVF treatment has been reinstated in Cambridgeshire.

The Clinical Commissioning Group, which funds NHS service in the constituency, has agreed to fund a cycle of IVF treatment with up to three implantations of embryos, giving people up to three chances of getting pregnant.

It was also interesting to hear from the CCG about their GP workforce strategy to ensure GPs come to work in all parts of the county, the boosting of non-GP roles, and some of the local and national initiatives being employed, including to support newly qualified GPs, encourage flexibility and new ways of working, grow the number of GP partners, and engage the next generation of leaders in primary care. The Government is funding five new medical schools to increase the number of doctors, including a new medical school in Lincoln, and it is key that these new doctors cover rural areas like our own.

FENLAND FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY

By Bridget Hunter Our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 23rd from 7pm to 9pm, in Wisbech Library, as long as COVID-19 restrictions continue to be lifted. At the meeting we will hold a short AGM and then be celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the formation of our society.

We usually meet on the fourth Thursday of each month, except August and December. We have a speaker or interesting display; we normally have a reference library you can browse and a book stall with interesting books and equipment for keeping and storing your research work. Our researchers are available offering help if required. Everyone welcome. Members are free. Visitors welcome for a donation of £2.

During COVID-19 restrictions I have dug deep to find interesting things connected to our family history research to include in my monthly report to share with you.

WORDS AND THEIR MEANINGS Family history is a fascinating hobby with so many things that can trip you up or lead you down a wrong turning. You learn old words and their meanings. Our language is always changing with each generation adding or dropping words from our English language.

On a census I found a seven-year-old boy listed as a son in law. After a little research I found the boy was the husband’s ‘son by law’ because he was the wife’s son, or stepson as we know it. I love finding where certain words come from in the past.

Like nicknames, in the past it was thought a newly born baby’s soul could be stolen away by the Devil, or old Nick, calling him away by his name.

The babe was not protected until baptised so the baby was given a false name or nickname until baptised with a Christian name.

Another lovely name is a corruption of two words. When a woman was near the end of her pregnancy she was confined to her bedroom, supported by her friends from the church. They would make sure the family were fed and the husband got up and made to go to work on time.

In addition, they kept her up-to-date with the village news. Those friends were like her sisters or siblings from the church. So, God siblings, combine the two words and hence “gossips” passing on the village news. In addition, the description of some trades has changed beyond recognition.

RESEARCH SESSIONS These restart on Tuesday, September 7th from 10am12 noon in Wisbech Library, (as long as restrictions continue to be lifted). The sessions are offered to anyone interested in researching their family history.

Our team of experienced researchers are on hand to guide you and show you how to get the most of what is available FREE at the library. We hold two sessions a month. On the first Tuesday of each month in Wisbech Library from 10am–12 noon. The second session is on the second Monday of each month. We will restart this session on Monday, September 13th, in the restaurant of Baytree Garden Centre in Hilgay off the A10 near Downham Market. We are there from 11am-2.30pm, everyone welcome. Our researchers are also willing to research and help you create your family history story.

Talks are offered by our two speakers to groups and clubs in the area. They have several different subjects. Available at the moment include ’The Fun of Family History’, ‘My Naughty Great Aunt Eliza’, ‘The Sad Story of the Blacksmith’s Family’ and ‘The Ups & Downs of being a Magistrate’.

Bookings are already in hand, among them are W1 meetings, a Probus meeting and U3A.

SELLING A PROPERTY? Make sure you pay the tax due, and quickly!

On April 6th, 2020, the Government made numerous changes to tax payable around property. The main one being a new requirement to report and pay capital gains tax on disposals of

UK residential property thirty days after the completion date. n this article Chris Goad, partner at Stephenson Smart’s Wisbech office, explains the changes and how they may affect you:

Capital Gains Tax Any UK resident that disposes of residential property, that gives rise to a capital gains tax liability, must now file a capital gains tax return and pay an estimate of the capital gains tax due within thirty days of completion. If the gain is covered by principal private residence relief no return is due, but this does mean the calculation to confirm this will need to be done within thirty days of the sale of the property. Failure to file a return, if due, could result in a penalty being issued.

Final period exemption Historically, final period exemption meant that you were not usually liable to capital gains tax for the last eighteen months of ownership, provided you lived in the property as your main residence at some point during your period of ownership. This gave protection for someone moving to a new main residence when having difficulty selling their original home. However, the final period has now been cut to nine months. Therefore, if you buy

a new property before selling the old, it will be important to sell within nine months to avoid a possible capital gains tax bill.

Letting relief Letting relief used to give up to £40,000 relief (£80,000 for a couple who jointly own the property) for someone letting part, or all, of a property which is their main residence, or was their former main residence at some point during their period of ownership. But, under the new rules, letting relief will only be available where you jointly share occupation with a tenant. Only the period during which both the owner and tenant occupied the residence will qualify for letting relief. Lettings that occurred prior to April 6th, 2020, that would have qualified for letting relief under the old rules, will become taxable under the new rules only.

Equity Release:

The Myths and The Misconceptions!

The most common feedback about equity release often prompts an angry retort, citing it as a con, a scam and a rip off. Social media is littered with comments about companies involved in it as thieves, and that you will lose your home.

T

he actual truth is a far cry from these unfounded comments. Indeed, in the past they were products called Home Income Plans and Shared Appreciation Mortgages that were not fully regulated and generally it is from bad experiences with these now nonexistent products that generally you will find the basis for the negativity towards equity release Today, modern equity release centres around a product called a Lifetime Mortgage. A fully regulated product, under the Financial Conduct Authority, it offers clients over the age of fifty-five who own their home a flexible way to access their property wealth through a cash-free lump sum or a combination of a lump sum and a drawdown facility. You remain the owner of your home and the lifetime mortgage is a first legal charge on the property, just in the same way as a traditional mortgage.

this offsets the impact on the erosion of equity in a property.

My clients initially are concerned that there will not be any equity left in their property and are surprised when they find that with the current interest rates, the amount borrowed will only double in about twenty years! So, if you have heard that the amount doubles every seven years, you are being misled by outdated and inaccurate information.

Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread disease, so put them on the compost heap, so long as they are not diseased. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures”. Field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia are just a few examples. If you have a light soil they can be left in over winter, but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

It is important that you lift potatoes before the arrival of cold, damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop: make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks and only store undamaged tubers. Onions should also be lifted and if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frostfree place such as a shed. Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes. Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen.

September is a good time to plant several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and they will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring.

• Planting broad beans in the autumn is a good way to avoid blackfly as they crop earlier. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions.

A few jobs that need doing this month include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Harvest apples and pears as they become ready and pick the late season strawberries and raspberries, which will keep cropping right up until the first frost.

Watch out for wasps!

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over: cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leaving new canes unpruned.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

New National Insurance Codes Steve Denton

The 2021 Spring budget may feel like a lifetime away as we have been focused on Covid-19 and progress towards a new post pandemic ‘norm’. Tucked away in the detail was the announcement of eight new Freeports which are proving a magnet to many Wisbech companies.

Until now, as a business owner, you may have had few difficulties in following the National Insurance coding system but complacency is the enemy of progress and HM Revenue & Customs has announced four more NI codes.

Where do Freeports come into this equation? The changes will affect any and all of our local companies trading within one of the eight new Freeport areas.

Felixstowe and Harwich, the Humber region and East Midlands airport are effectively locals and within easy reach of Wisbech and district.

The four codes become active in April 2022 to comply with the new regulations. The new codes included are: F– I – S– L–

standard category letter married women & widows entitled to pay reduced NIC’s employees above state pension age employees who defer paying 12% NIC, only paying 2% as they pay full contributions elsewhere.

These new codes match the existing A, B, C & J which will still be used by employees working for firms not based within the boundaries of one of the new Freeport areas.

In England, Scotland & Wales employers with a physical presence in a Freeport tax site can operate a zero-rated Employer Class 1 NIC’s for new employees who spend at least 60% of their time working within the Freeport tax site.

New employees are classed as starting after April 2022 and must not have worked for the employer or a business connected to that employer in the previous 24 months.

Existing employee are not included in the scheme.

There is other fine detail and the Relief to employers, who qualify for the new scheme, is due to run for nine years until 2031. However, HMRC will review the policy part way through to determine its future.

He said: “Colours and ideas changed in the furniture market which pushed me in a slightly different direction and I opened a small factory making pine furniture – supplying other independent retailers, as well as my own outlet. I also operated a removals and storage company. Using the same equipment and vehicles, I was able to offer house clearance services which allowed dealings for all types of needs from the small cottage to, on occasion, the large estate move.”

Glyn was also able to give his time and service to the United Kingdom serving in the British Army as a TA solider which he enjoyed immensely, serving on the peacekeeping tour of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He added: “A few more years passed by and I found myself in Peterborough working at an auction house. After ten and a half years I realised it was time once again to open my own auction house. I’ve always felt that there is a market out there to serve the public and business sector, above and beyond, with attention to detail and finesse – so Glyn Jones Auctions was finally launched in 2021.”

Wis-BEACH Rock Festival wows thousands in family fun for all With predicted wet weather, and hundreds of frantic calls of, “Oh no, what will happen?” the Festivals and Events Committee spent days reassuring the Wisbech community that the event would go ahead regardless, quoting the Glastonbury Festival as an example of determined festivalgoers in wellies and hoodies.

Sweden, Slava B, Blondied and headliners, Slade, who whipped the crowd into a frenzy of excitement with some of their biggest hits.

On Sunday, August 8th, stewards completed the set-up of activities and logistical safety measures.

The first stallholders arrived at 8am, then the Mayor’s charity chair dunk was erected, followed by the first visitors who were armed with chairs, umbrellas and stamina! Firmly placing themselves close to the main stage, it was not long before other crowds were surrounding them, each claiming a small patch of grass for the day, pre-armed with blankets and pop-up tents.

The Mayor and Councillor Sam Hoy volunteered to sit on the dunk chair, and thanks to Wisbech in Bloom’s generous offer of their water bowser, balloons were quickly filled to burst over the targets’ heads.

At 11am, to a rapturous welcome for Wisbech Mayor Councillor Andrew Lynn’s announcement that the festival was now starting, both main stage and local stage commenced the day’s musical line-up, with The Brink and Roy McManus enthralling the welcoming festivalgoers.

Onwards, on the main stage, band after band were expertly looked after and co-ordinated by stage manager Ian Larkin, from Remarkable Entertainment. There followed Light Skies Darken, Two Cats n Payne, Toadfish Bone, Matt McChlery, The Old Time Sailors, Lizzie Bryant, Lexie Green, Kill Me Kate, The John Noakes Experience, Dave Benning, Walkway, AKA, S E PTEM B ER 2021

The area set aside for children and families was bustling with excited laughs as sandcastles were built and an array of fairground rides invited children to relax and enjoy the sun, and rain.

Chairman of the Festivals and Events Committee, Councillor Sam Hoy, said: “It was a really great day and it was nice to see so many people come and have a great time. Thanks so much to everyone that made this event possible.”

Fenland Fire Appliances came up trumps by loaning the town council the necessary fire extinguishers for various areas around the park and Total Solutions provided pre-, during, and post-event support which the council was truly grateful for.

After the event closed, councillors and volunteers’ work had not yet finished as they set about clearing litter and dismantling festival props.

With visitors estimated between three and five thousand people throughout the day, the Wisbech Rock Festival goes from strength to strength. Roll on 2022!

PETERBOROUGH NEW THEATRE TRUST

TO RAISE £3.5M TO BUY THEATRE

N

ow that Peterborough's New Theatre has re-opened following the long COVID-19 closure, an excellent opportunity has arisen for the community to buy the theatre and start to improve its facilities – whilst also protecting its long-term future.

A new community interest company, the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, is being formed to purchase the freehold of the theatre and ensure it is maintained as the ‘anchor’ cultural venue for the city centre in perpetuity.

The trust has negotiated an offer to buy the theatre for just £3.25 million from its current landlord, excellent value particularly given that local philanthropist Peter Boizot refurbished the theatre at a cost of over £10m not so long ago.

The trust believes that communities in and around Peterborough will step forward and either

donate or lend most of the cost of the investment, augmented by grants and loans from government agencies, other charities and local philanthropists.

The trust has already secured £150,000 towards the target.

At this stage we are looking for Peterborough people to show their support by becoming ‘An Angel of the New Theatre’ by simply emailing Angels@Dawe.co.uk and telling us how they could help buy the theatre. We are particularly looking for people who want to help us promote the Peterborough New Theatre Trust, through media, social media, virtual meetings and face-to-face.

Outstanding A-Level results for Wisbech Grammar School Students

ontinued disruption to Wisbech Grammar School pupils’ school life in the form of further lockdowns, remote learning and a stifling of the enrichment programmes were all overcome as demonstrated by a superb set of results.

Headmaster Chris Staley said pupils at WGS continue to excel in a remarkable display of resilience as A-Level results surpass expectations.

Mr Staley said: “Once again, WGS pupils continue to astound me.

The A-Level results this year have improved even further from twelve months ago. This particular year group were always predicted to achieve well, based on their GCSE results in 2019 – the last occasion that a year 11 group sat GCSE examinations.

“The top grades (A*-A) accounted for well over half of the results with 80% of grades A*-B, and 92% of grades A* to C, again an improvement upon last year. What is also pleasing is that in excess of 90% of WGS pupils gained their first-choice places at university, with other pupils successfully achieving their goal to move straight into employment or degree apprenticeships.

Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear Unusual, fascinating and sometimes amusing, by the author of ‘Wisbech’s Secret Princess’, Chris Donald

Wisbech Theatre We owe the nice theatre we have in Wisbech, now known as the Angles, to Fanny.

he made improvements to the Wisbech theatre including chandeliers.

Who was Fanny? She was a very important person in the history of this little theatre.

As well as modern plays quite a number of plays

by Shakespeare were performed, but in 1825 there was a different type of attraction at the Wisbech theatre, a display of waxworks by Madame Tussaud who was already by then aged sixtyfour. It wasn’t until ten years later that she had a permanent display in London which is now world famous. And one of the most famous actors of the time, McCready, did a number of plays here.

But, before that, let’s meet Thomas Robertson, born in 1765 into a theatrical family. He had his first part as an actor at the tender age of five.

In those days actors often formed theatre companies, played the leading roles themselves and managed the business affairs. And so it was, that at the age of twenty-two, Thomas entered into a theatre management partnership with James Miller. At the same time, he married an actress, Fanny, who was born in Wisbech. So, it was inevitable that if your wife came from Wisbech it would be obvious that you would want to build a theatre there and so Fanny got her theatre.

Also important was the fact that Wisbech was becoming a prosperous town and was the largest town in Cambridgeshire, except for Cambridge itself. The theatre became known as the New Theatre. They had a circuit of theatres that they took in turn to visit. For some time, these included Lincoln, Boston, Peterborough, Newark, Oundle, Huntingdon and Wisbech.

Nowadays, we are used to the modern theatre.

The lights dim, everybody goes quiet and the stage is lit. Our whole attention is on the actors, but in those days the theatres were lit by candles and later by kerosene lamps and the auditorium was just as bright as the stage. This meant that the audience felt no different to those on the stage. It was common to see the audience talking amongst themselves and going in and out of the theatre at will.

Great amounts of food and alcohol were consumed. Because of this the actors had to work extra hard to get the audience’s attention.

As well, audiences could be rowdy and when a man threw a glass at Fanny whilst performing Thomas made sure that man never did it again.

In 1802 Thomas changed partners and soon after 44

But all did not stay well for Mr Robinson. He had been managing the circuit for twenty years when

Wisbech was becoming a prosperous town and was the largest town in Cambridgeshire, except for Cambridge itself. The theatre became known as the New Theatre. They had a circuit of theatres that they took to in turn to visit he ran into debt and was sent to jail at Lincoln Castle. In the 19th century you were put in prison if you owed money and food was not provided, you had to pay for it whilst you were there and if you couldn’t you had to beg. Some poor inmates ended up dying of starvation.

Luckily for Thomas his supporters rallied round and put on some productions to raise the money to get him out, but just six years later Thomas died at the age of sixty-six and Fanny took on the task of keeping the circuit going.

Two Wisbech historians of the time described the theatre as: ‘This is a wretched building, but so situated among back lanes and back yards that its wretchedness is in private, as such things S E P T E M BE R 2 0 2 1

ought to be. It is merely four bare walls and a roof, painted and boxed in the interior into a tolerable illusion. Still, wretched as it is, it is too pretending for the poor fallen amusement for which it is appropriated; and it is now oftener opened to the auctioneer than to the heroes of Greek tragedies.’

Then in 1835 the corn merchant James Hill, father of Octavia Hill, bought the Georgian theatre and land adjoining it. He put money into the theatre which now included gas lighting. At the front he built a school but five years later he became bankrupt. The theatre and school were sold and he and his family was forced to leave town.

Fanny retired to a dwelling in Norfolk Street. After some time, she became short of money and people from nearby theatres subscribed to a fund for her and a concert was put on at the theatre.

She died in Wisbech in 1855 at the age of ninety.

And finally, in 1843 the theatre, which ‘had been S E PTEM B ER 2021

In the same year Fanny resigned from the management, aged seventy-eight, and gave her last performance in a play called Elizabeth.

After fifty-three years the theatre closed its doors and would not echo to the sound of actors for another 132 years. But that is another story…

The company was formed in May 2019 by March man Tom Westbrook who has more than 26 years’ experience in manufacturing, fitting and repairing windows and has received a very positive response from satisfied local customers.
