Welcome to your May issue... W

hat better way to welcome you all, than with a smile?

Mid-May to mid-June every year happens to be “National Smile Month”, one of the U.K’s largest and longest-running campaigns to promote good oral health. Now over forty years old, this year’s events will be taking place between May 17th and June 17th. In a world where plenty of things seem to succeed in making us feel perhaps inadequate and sometimes sad, it’s worth remembering that it’s always much easier to smile than it is to frown. Remember... life is like a mirror – we get the best results when we smile at it! Our May issue is hopefully going to fill you all with the joys of spring and those long, warmer days of summer just around the corner, so smile away, and let’s all get ourselves ready for the fabulous long weekend, early next month, to celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee!

Claire x

For many homeowners, this time of year normally necessitates time spent outside to carry out maintenance work on one’s property or garden after the winter. For myself, this year’s pressing task was to paint the back fence. It will need replacing in the nottoo-distant future but for now my wife and I thought treating it would suffice and help spruce it up for the summer. We tackled different panels and soon I seemed to have swept ahead in terms of panels completed. Feeling rather pleased with myself I was somewhat shocked a couple of hours later when the fence started to dry, for my handiwork looked a pale comparison to that of my wife’s and needed another coat. Clutching at straws, I suggested that perhaps she had used a darker colour of fence paint, but after checking the tins, unfortunately I had to concede that she had in fact just done a better job and had the honour of painting the decking on her own…

May Gardening Tips

ay can be a month of extremes so be prepared for late frosts, sunny dry spells, and/or high winds. The biggest threat is to the newly emerging seedlings and plants that have recently been transplanted. If it is hot, make sure they are well watered and give them some shade protection or protect them from drying winds. If there is a late frost, cover your tender crops with fleece, bubble wrap or similar. Seeds that were sown last month, such as carrots, beetroot and parsnips will need thinning out whilst they are still very small. Once they have been thinned out, water along the row and it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly, as this gets down to the roots. Earth up potatoes when the leaves are about 20cm tall; draw up the earth on either side to form a ridge approx. 15cms high and this will protect the foliage from frost and stop the tubers going green. Keep on top of the weeds by hoeing regularly, preferably in dry weather so they cannot re-establish themselves. Aphids never seem to go away but you can control them by doing any of the following: • Stir together 1 quart of water, 1 tsp of washingup liquid and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Do not dilute before spraying on plants. • Peppermint, spearmint, and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot.

THE SHED SHOP

4

• Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigold and nasturtiums. • Spray the affected plants with soapy water (diluted washing up liquid) or squash the flies with your thumb and finger. Or you can buy organic pesticide. Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list, but include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas. Succession sowing ensures that you have a continual supply and not a glut of the same crop and is particularly good for salad crops which you need to cut and use immediately. Indoors, sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines, and cabbages and, towards the end of the month when the risk of frost has gone, they can be planted outdoors. Other jobs to do this month include: • Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage. • Pot on growing plants. • Put up bean and pea supports. • Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year. • Put some straw underneath developing strawberry fruits to keep them off the soil and try to avoid watering overhead to reduce any problems with mildew. Happy gardening!

WELLBEING WALKS TO BE LAUNCHED IN FENLAND Local people will be able to discover the joys of walking thanks to a new programme from Fenland District Council’s Active Fenland team. Active Fenland, which provides a range of sports and physical activity sessions across the district, has launched a new Wellbeing Walks scheme. It is part of the new Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Wellbeing Walks scheme which is part of the wider national Ramblers Wellbeing Walks network. The group walks, which will all be led by trained Ramblers volunteer walk leaders, will all be specially designed to be short (thirty-ninety minutes) and over easy ground, so they are ideal if you’ve never walked before. They’re a great way to meet new people and walk in good company, and to give your health and wellbeing a boost. A series of taster walks were held recently across Fenland, including Whittlesey, to give people the chance to come and have a go at a Wellbeing Walk and details of where and when regular Wellbeing Walks will be held will be released soon so keep an eye on Active Fenland’s webpage at www.fenland.gov.uk/ActiveFenland or follow them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ ActiveFenland for updates. If you’d like to become a Ramblers Wellbeing Walk leader, to lead group walks in your local community, email the Active Fenland team at activefenlandbookings@fenland.gov.uk or call 07874 893316, or pop along to one of the taster walks. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR First of all, may I correct an error in my article of last month in that Whittlesey Town Council will be staging a Family Day on the Manor Leisure Centre grounds to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee on Sunday, June 5th from 2pm and not on Friday, June 3rd as previously advised. My apologies for the error. My grateful thanks go to all those who supported my annual dinner dance held last month. The incredible array of raffle and auction prizes donated by local businesses resulted in a final profit of £3546 which will go to my nominated charities this year of Whittlesey Sports Association, Community Car Scheme and the Sue Ryder Hospice at Thorpe Hall, Peterborough. In addition, I have donated £1000 to the Ukrainian Relief Fund via The British Red Cross and would implore everyone to keep Ukraine in their thoughts and prayers at this time and to support the relief effort in any way that you can. The month of May is traditionally a time in politics when elections take place whether it be locally or nationally. Whittlesey Town Council will be holding their own elections of mayor, deputy mayor and the formations of the respective committees under which the council operates on Thursday, May 19th at their annual meeting at Peel House which commences at 7.30pm. Should you wish to attend then please notify town clerk Mrs Sue Piergianni in good time. It is particularly important that we look to the future and encourage anyone who has contemplated representing their local community at either town or district level to step forward. For anyone who is considering such a future I would encourage them to contact the town council offices or approach myself or any of our existing councillors to find out, in strictest confidence, the requirements. Local churches are also holding annual elections in the month of May and after serving St Andrew’s as churchwarden for thirty years I have decided to step down in favour of a younger person. This

will also give me the opportunity of increasing my available time to serve the wider community on town and district councils. It has been a great privilege and honour to serve St Andrew’s Church as churchwarden, youth leader and verger and to have worked alongside Rectors John Stevenette, Philip Collins and Nigel Whitehouse over the years but with the appointment of a young married couple in the form of Emily and Lloyd Davis as ordained priests in June, now is the time for me to move on. With the advent of spring, warmer, longer days and the return of growth in our gardens we can all afford to be optimistic in our outlook so let us all enjoy the coming summer. Until next time… Cllr David K M Mason Mayor & Leader, Whittlesey Town Council

COUNCILLOR SURGERIES

On Saturday, May 7th councillors present will be Jason Mockett (district and town) and Roy Gerstner (town). If you have any matters of concern and wish to discuss with a councillor, then please come along and let us know.

TOP MARKS FOR CLUBS Thirteen weeks of the year, most schools close their doors to the children and communities they serve. Half-terms and holidays can be great fun, but at times they can be stressful for parents and carers. In recent years, New Road and Park Lane schools have provided holiday clubs at very affordable prices. The clubs focus on a variety of sports and are managed by the schools’ PE lead Janette Bowden. Janette is passionate about sport and was recently voted Whittlesey’s “Sporting Personality of the Year”. During the national lockdowns the schools remained open every half-term and every summer holiday to provide holiday club support to the children and their families. One half-term, staff pulled together to keep the school open for the children of key workers. It was their way of supporting the NHS and other vital services when they needed it the most.

CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT LORRIES The Early Years classes at Alderman Jacobs School had a very exciting visit from local haulage company PJ Thory. The children loved learning about and exploring the lorry, with help from Tony, Emma and Lexie and had a great time! A school spokesperson said: “They asked lots of brilliant questions and enjoyed a new experience! Thank you to all at PJ Thory from Early Years at AJS.”

During the lockdowns, Janette managed to secure funding from The Whittlesey Charities Trust so that every child who wanted to attend could afford to. This funding resulted in the number of children benefitting growing to sixty. Further funding was secured from Greggs to provide half-term hampers for families who needed extra help with food costs. The schools and their staff were more than happy to support this – a behind-the-scenes team effort resulted in more than seven hundred food parcels being delivered by New Road and Park Lane staff. For this year’s Easter holiday, Janette registered Aspire Learning Trust as a provider for Cambridgeshire’s Holiday Activity and Food Club scheme (HAF). This enabled the Trust to offer holiday clubs to all of Whittlesey’s children for the first time ever. As a charitable trust working tirelessly for children who attend New Road and Park Lane Primary Schools, and Sir Harry Smith Community College, the Trust was more than happy to support this work. 10

“Let there be Light!”

Bourne Abbey Church Gets an Electrical Upgrade BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

I

t’s been a month since we told you about our project at Bourne Abbey, and some

of you may have been able to view the updated lighting during the Easter period. Whilst carrying out this work, it quickly became apparent that the lighting would highlight the paint on the radiators that had begun to flake. Working with conservation specialist, Architettura, we were able to refresh the paint on the high-level radiators, leaving the church with a fresh look. We acted swiftly at the beginning of the project to ensure this could be completed at the same time, meaning that we will now be able to complete our handover this month. Here’s a chance to enjoy the photos of the completed work:

If you would like us to look at lighting at a church you attend, please contact us and we will be happy to offer a free consultation to see what your options are; whether the reason be poor lighting or you wanting to save money, we can help.

The Start of Spring Sees an SOS for Gardeners to Help the Vulnerable By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades Fears that vulnerable city residents could fall foul of scammers as spring kicks in has led to an SOS for reputable gardeners to lend a hand. Charities including Age UK are often asked by those using their services to put them in touch with reliable gardening services. However, due to fears that some residents are being scammed by rogue traders who simply knock on doors touting for work, city consumer champion Eileen Le Voi, director of Safe Local Trades, has stepped in to try and help. She said, “Unfortunately, there is no local authority funding to ensure that charities looking after the interests of the elderly and vulnerable have the budget to provide these services – and sadly, too many residents fall foul of the rogues. Safe Local Trades covers a core area of the PE postcode district, from Spalding to St Neots and Stamford to Wisbech. With regular requests for garden maintenance across all areas, we are currently unable to meet the needs of our elderly customers with their request for a recommendation. This increases their risk of becoming a victim to unscrupulous cold callers.” 15:38 Eileen works alongside charities and local authorities who rely on Safe Local Trades to recommend professionals to their users. She added, “The problem we currently have is that our Safe Local Trades recommended garden maintenance members are so busy that they are unable to take on new, urgent jobs or provide regular garden maintenance across the many areas. Sadly, Age UK had its funding for providing gardening services withdrawn some time ago, and so relies heavily on organisations like Safe Local Trades to step in to assist residents.” She is now appealing to PE postcode gardening businesses, who wish to join existing members to help meet the supply and demand for gardeners. As part of her role with CAPASP, Eileen is the resident expert on doorstep crime for the past fourteen years. Safe Local Trades has been showcasing tried, tested and reliable tradespeople in and around Peterborough – and some of its own members have come to the aid of vulnerable city residents who have been duped out of cash by cowboy builders and other rogue workmen. If you are a reputable gardener, who is prepared to be vetted, to join our register of reputable local tradespeople, please go to www.safelocaltrades. com/become-a-member or call 0800 014 1832 to register your interest. Matters CHARITY FUNDS FLY IN FROM DUCK RACE

The Mayor of Whittlesey Charity Duck Race was a fantastic success, with all one thousand duck tickets selling out only moments before the start of the race. One of the last to buy tickets was Nathan Steele who bought some for his seven-year-old son Sam who consequently went onto scoop first prize and £50 with Duck #897. Second prize was Duck #418 belonging to Kenneth Fomujang who wins £25 and third place and £10 went to Duck 614 Harry Jones. The ducks entered the water at Briggate Bridge on Ramsey Road and travelled close to 100m having to negotiate the bend in the Bower. Cheered on by a huge crowd, the ducks were encouraged down the river in near perfect conditions by the hose pipes of Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue, Whittlesey Station, to be greeted at the finish line by canoeists Andrew and Frankie Roddham who had to decide in a near photo finish the placings. The Mayor Cllr David Mason congratulated Sam on his winning duck and also thanked all those who helped sell the tickets, those who fed, nurtured and transported the ducks over the difficult last two years, St John Ambulance, the Fire & Rescue team, Whitt the Duck, Freddie Johnson and Robert Windle of Fenland Youth Radio for their support and Whittlesey Veterinary Centre for the use of their car park. When pressed about what he was going to do with his winnings, Sam was undecided whether to splash the cash on his family or invest it in shares in a duck company. The Mayor’s Good Causes are Whittlesey Community Car Scheme, Whittlesey Sports Association and Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall. Photos: courtesy of RWT Photography/Fenland Youth Radio

FUEL DUTY – THE BIGGER PICTURE By Eamonn Dorling

calculations, but some factors to consider are that EVs are more energy efficient because 60% of the energy used for propulsion is lost via heat and friction in an ICE rather than virtually 90%* for an EV. There are fewer moving parts and no exhaust system and no oil changes. Taxation on electricity is 5% (VAT).

F

uel duty was reduced on March 23rd, 2022, from 0.5795 pence per litre (ppl) to 0.5295ppl for petrol and diesel fuels in relation to normal domestic use. There are many grades of oils, biofuels and gases that also enjoy modest reductions.

These reductions are temporary for twelve months. The reduction (based on a cost of £1.70 per litre) is that fuel duty reduces from 34% to 31%. In addition, VAT is charged at 20% (an example of paying tax on tax – because fuel duty is effectively a tax). With rising wholesale petrol prices, biofuel, delivery and oil company margins and retailer margins, the modest reduction in fuel duty will hardly impact on pump prices. So, what are the alternatives? Fossil fuel propulsion will gradually switch to emission-free electric vehicles (EV). The cost of an electric vehicle may be greater than the equivalent specification Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) variant, but the running costs are lower. For example, if you pay peak rate electricity for your EV, the running cost per mile is approximately one-third of that for an ICE. There are many factors contributing to the

In addition, electric vehicles may qualify for grants, incentives and exemption from UltraLow Emission Zones (ULEZ). Benefit in Kind (BiK) tax allowances can make the selection of an EV company car attractive options, and Salary Sacrifice and Road Tax (another duty) can all influence the total running cost comparison. Of course, there is the option of generating your own electricity from solar panels or a wind turbine, the equivalent is virtually impossible for ICE. Therefore, the recent excitement over fuel duty may eventually work out as an acceleration towards emission-free transport. Budgeting is an integral part of financial planning, if you need help contact an independent financial adviser. *www.renaultgroup.com/en/news-on-air/news/theenergy-efficiency-of-an-electric-car-motor/#:~:text=For%20 an%20electric%20vehicle%2C%20energy,not%20a%2 very%20large%20amount Issued by Wealthline Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. I

t’s been a busy few weeks at Harvest Barn with lots going on during the Easter holidays.

Not only did we have ‘Breakfast with the Easter Bunny’ and a fun day of Easter activities but we also welcomed two new additions to the Harvest Barn family. These two beautiful lambs haven’t got names yet and if you have any good suggestions for our two baby girls then please drop us a Facebook message or email @ harvestbarnfarmshop /info@harvestbarn.co.uk). You can pop along any day to see the babies in person at Muddy Boots Farmyard as well as the usual crowd of badly behaved goats plus our sheep, chickens and ducks. We’re not resting for long as we have our first ever Car Boot Sale on Sunday, May 8th. Entry for sellers is from 8am and pitches start from £7. All details are on our website www.harvestbarn.co.uk and we plan to run car boots every first and last Sunday of the month throughout the rest of the year. We’ll have wonderful seasonal produce for sale in the shop as always throughout May as well as on our menu, with English asparagus not far away and our home-grown rhubarb, plus wonderful seasonal greens and Jersey new potatoes all coming into stock. Simon, our head chef, is thinking of delicious menu ideas, including roasted asparagus soup, with chicken and seasonal greens salad followed by rhubarb and ginger crumble (with custard

of course!). With many more daily specials and Sunday lunch items in the offing, we aim to use as much seasonal produce as possible in our menu ideas so every day is different! It’s a busy time on the farm too, with Ben and Steve keeping the weeds at bay and checking the cereal crops for any nutrient deficiencies. The apple blossom is also coming into full bloom as I write and it’s a wonderful display this year – so there’s plenty for the bees to do and thankfully Mariusz, our beekeeper, has managed to replace the hives lost during the February storms, so there should be lots of honey from the farm available from late June. We’re getting our plans in place for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, with our celebrations starting from late May. We have lots going on including Afternoon Teas and a ‘Street Party’ with Craft Fayre and Teddy Bears’ Picnic, so there are plenty of opportunities to join us and help us to celebrate in style. Look out for full details next month. We are also very proud to announce that we have been awarded the Prestige Awards’ Farmshop of the Year for Central England. It was a complete shock to us to win this award and we are very proud and grateful to all our customers who have supported us, particularly over the last two years. The judges said they ‘were particularly impressed by the community feel that has made this local farm shop a great place to meet up and shop or chat with friends and family over a slice of homemade cake and a ground coffee.’

Introducing Clearanail®

C

learanail® is a patented product for treating Fungal Nail (Onychomycosis). Traditional antifungal solutions applied to the nail, cannot penetrate the nail plate to easily reach the infection underneath.

• Clearanail® is based upon Controlled Micro Penetration (CMP)® that makes tiny holes in the nail plate. • The holes allow topical treatments to reach the nail bed in much higher concentration levels than otherwise possible. • Effective for treating advanced infections in the nail root. • Results are fast – usually visible in 2-8 weeks. • Does it hurt? No you usually won’t feel anything, because the device is computer controlled to ensure that it retracts as soon as it breaks through the nail bed i.e. it does not damage the nail bed.

Two Sisters have moved into their homes at Heron Park. Two sisters who fell in love with a Longhurst Group development bought their dream homes and became neighbours. Laura bought her two bedroom semi-detached home on Heron Park close to where her sister, Abigail, previously completed on her three bedroom end of terrace. The sisters said it wasn’t planned to be neighbours, but were looking forward to having familiar faces living close by. Laura added: “We haven’t always planned to live near to each other, especially as I didn’t fancy doing the babysitting! “We’re close though, so it’ll be nice to have a familiar face as a neighbour. “I’m incredibly excited to be so close to my family – especially when I need the lawn cutting!” Laura said Shared Ownership attracted her to the development. She added: “The whole team has been really helpful and incredibly professional and now working for the Group has given me even more confidence.”

In Memory Of

REMEMBERING...

Jonathan Fox: ʻChopʼ

B

orn on June 22nd, 1960 at March Nursing Home to Jennifer and Bernard Fox, Jonathan lived at Manea until 1965, spending one term there before moving to Goosetree, where the family took on a council small holding. Here Jonathan attended Coates School before going on to Sir Harry Smith school until he was sixteen. As a boy he loved his life on the farm, driving tractors and an old Ford Popular car on stubble fields and droves. After leaving school he took an apprenticeship with David Johns which included one day per week at Wisbech Farming College over three years. To Jonathan agriculture was both his hobby and his job combined. In 1984 he took a job that included a house and afterwards purchased his own property in Coates where he went to work for Easton farmers. In 1994 Jonathan won the title ‘East Midlands Sprayer Operator of the Year.’ After going self-employed in 2017 he did contract work on various farms as well as driving heavy plant machinery for Thory’s. He enjoyed a good social life with his many friends, holidaying abroad in Australia, Mauritius, New York and Spain, as well as spending weekends

e understand that it is not easy to deal with everything following the loss of a loved one. However, one thing which we feel might help you come to terms with your loss is to share with others some information and some of the many memories you may have. So, if you would like us to include a piece in our magazine about your loved one,

in Blackpool and Cheltenham. Jonathan was a Newcastle United fan although he would be better described as a fan of football. He loved talking football with anyone willing enough to participate, often making for a very lively discussion. Jonathan had a lovely nature; this was reciprocated by his many friends who gave him much support and kindness over his last few months. After his passing away on November 9th, 2021, there was a celebration of his life on December 17th at March Crematorium, much of which was arranged by Jonathan himself. To his family Jonathan was and always will be Simply the Best. The family would like to thank everyone for their kind donations, amounting to £3100 divided between Macmillan Nurses, who were so kind to Jonathan in his last few months, and the Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, Peterborough where he was looked after in his final days. maybe including some photographs, please get in touch with us and we would be delighted to share it with our many readers, (at no cost to yourself!) by publishing it in our next issue. n order to maintain the health of your business you must continue to market it.

Marketing does more for your business than promote your brand. Marketing highlights your attributes to your potential customers and keeps them in the forefront of their minds. Marketing will only increase interest and turn organic leads into sales. For the sake of your business, remain consistent with your marketing or risk losing customers.
