his month, of course, we’ve got Valentine’s Day on February 14th where we can all stoke those romantic fires, so let’s ignore all the rain and gales out there, (Storm Christoph about to join us, as I write!) and cosy up inside and enjoy this month’s collection of features and ideas brought together for you by our wonderful team.

Approaching the anniversary of the coronavirus reaching our shores, I vowed to make one month in the year free of COVID-19 references, so this February is the one! Keep safe and think of those sunny days to come – things will improve, and that begins when you have to stay indoors with your loved one to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

As I get older, I increasingly find I get up earlier in the morning. While most normal people are still asleep in their beds, I’m invariably sitting in my lounge watching television.

Recently I’ve started to tune in to a channel that specialises in re-runs of popular programmes from my youth many of which I’ve always recalled with great fondness.

Unfortunately tuning in to them today has changed my view… most of them seem so old and the storylines and acting frankly dated.

However, it’s fascinating seeing well-known actors taking their first steps in the industry before going on to future stardom. As they say nostalgia isn’t what it used to be…

On a different note, I would like to wish regular contributor Brian Smithyman a speedy recovery as he fights off the effects of COVID-19. Get well soon Brian…

February GARDENING TIPS

F

ebruary is a month of preparation and re-awakening as spring draws nearer. The best thing when planting is to be guided by the weather, rather than to stick to a strict regime.

If you have not completed your winter digging, now is the time, so long as the soil is not too wet or frozen: incorporate as much rotted down manure and compost as you can. There is no need to dig it in, as the worms will do that for you, and then cover it to keep the soil warm and some of the rain off.

A number of seeds can be planted indoors, ready for planting out when the weather improves. These include broad beans, Brussels, leeks, onions, salad leaves, tomatoes, peas, spinach, summer cabbage and sprouting broccoli.

Onion and shallot sets can be planted but, if the soil is too wet, they could be started off in plugs, putting them almost on the surface of the compost. They can then be put in the greenhouse or cold frame. Broad beans can also be planted in pots under cover, ready to be planted out later.

All of your seed potatoes for the year should have been purchased by the end of this month and spread out in egg boxes or seed trays for “chitting”. Make sure they are in a cool, dark room; in the dark, they will produce long, translucent shoots. Remove all but three of the “chits” as it is believed that this produces larger potatoes.

Other jobs for February include: •

Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

• Remove dead leaves from cabbages and sprouts – if they start to rot, they can spread mould and mildew.

• Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground.

• Bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted but this will be your last opportunity.

• Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes.

•

Winter prune currants, blackberries, hybrid berries, gooseberries. It really is the last call for pruning fruit trees as they will soon be making new growth.

•

If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch.

•

The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm.

•

Oh, and don’t forget, if you haven’t dug a bean trench, now would be a good opportunity. Just dig a spade’s depth down and then throw in all your kitchen waste, newspaper, cardboard etc and layer it with soil – couldn’t be easier!

Give Romance Scammers the Elbow as Valentine Season Approaches

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades With the pandemic making it more and more difficult for “lockdown lonely hearts” to meet potential partners face-to-face, rogue romancers are looking to steal more than just their affections!

Last year, UK victims of online romance fraud were conned out of more than an estimated £63 million by love rats posing as potential partners by using a fake profile. These people are experts at grooming their victims and their endgame is always about how much money they can extract. Here are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe: on't rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions and it is paramount that you meet virtually in person via video chat.

Matters MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

The United Kingdom has found itself in a national lockdown due to the concerns over the new strains of virus which have accelerated the COVID-19 situation to alarming proportions and of course this has affected every one of us in Whittlesey and the surrounding area.

Vaccines to counter this terrible virus have been produced in record time by our research organisations and we should be proud and reassured that in this field of medical research we lead the world.

Many local residents have complained that the administering of these vaccines is not taking place in Whittlesey and that the nearest vaccination point is at Stanground. Whilst Whittlesey Town Council sympathises with this unfortunate turn of events there is very little that we can do to influence the authorities in this matter. The correct route of complaint is initially through the local GP, practice manager at the local surgery and ultimately the National Health Service itself.

I am sure that there isn't one person locally who is not aware of the present crisis caused by COVID-19. Whilst I realise that not everyone has access to modern technology and therefore cannot keep up to date online, we are certainly able to gain information by means of daily updates on both radio and television.

The message in lockdown is basically simple – stay at home whenever possible, abide by the rules set down prohibiting movement between families and each other's homes and congregating in public places. Make visits to shops for essential items only, wear face masks when in contact with other people and maintain social distancing at all times whilst being extra vigilant in terms of personal hygiene and using hand sanitisers where available and if you suspect you may have COVID-19 symptoms take medical advice at the earliest opportunity.

Employment should be carried out from home wherever possible and above all ‘think safe’ and 16

I am acutely aware of the tremendous harm that our economy is suffering at the present time, especially in the hospitality industry. Whilst Fenland District Council has done a great job in passing on central government funding to all eligible businesses, in many cases this is not enough.

However, in Whittlesey, each and every one of us can play our part in supporting the local economy.

Whilst prices may be slightly higher, you can make savings on travel costs to Peterborough or other areas where you would normally shop and for those who have used online deliveries from the large supermarkets the cost of delivery is saved. Support the Friday market in Whittlesey where I can personally endorse the quality of the fruit and veg and fresh fish.

Exercise at least once a day, if only by taking a brisk walk. The benefits of regular exercise cannot be overstated both mentally and physically. With the onset of the vaccines and by abiding by the Government guidelines we will beat this virus.

NEW GRANTS ANNOUNCED TO HELP COVID-HIT BUSINESSES More grant schemes to help local businesses survive the latest coronavirus restrictions have been launched by Fenland District Council.

The council has opened three grant schemes for applications – and is urging businesses to check the eligibility criteria to ensure they don’t miss the chance to claim funding. Visit www.fenland.gov.uk/businessgrants The grants are for businesses affected by the Tier 2 restrictions from December 2nd to December 25th, 2020 and the Tier 4 restrictions and national lockdown since December 26th, 2020. There is also a specific grant to support pubs and bars FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 1

that predominantly served alcohol rather than food through the festive period. The grant schemes now open for applications in Fenland are: • Closed businesses lockdown payment – a one-off grant payment of either £4000, £6000 or £9000 depending on ratable value is available to businesses forced to close in line with the national restrictions which came into place on January 5th, 2021. This grant is available in addition to the local restrictions support grants (LRSG).

• Local restrictions support grant (open) – hospitality, accommodation and leisure businesses which suffered a reduction in trade due to the Tier 2 restrictions are eligible to obtain the LRSG (open) grant. This grant will be paid on a fourteen-day cycle in line with whatever period Fenland remained in Tier 2.

• Local restrictions support grant (closed) – the LRSG (closed) grant is available to businesses in these sectors which are required to remain closed, i.e. due to the requirement to only serve alcohol alongside a substantial meal.

• ‘Wet-led’ pub grants (open) – a one-off grant of £1000 for pubs and bars impacted over the Christmas period due to local restrictions.

The second round of the additional restrictions grant (ARG) was also due to launch on or before January 22nd, 2021. This is support for businesses not eligible for the LRSG which have been affected by either Tier 2 restrictions or the national lockdown in November.

Cllr Chris Boden, leader of Fenland District Council and portfolio holder for finance, said: “The coronavirus pandemic continues to take a huge toll on our local economy and businesses, but we hope that these grants will go some way to helping those in need.

“Since the start of the outbreak in March, we have distributed more than £20.9 million in funding, making nearly 2500 payments to businesses, and our teams continue to work hard to get even more funding out as quickly as possible.

“I would encourage any businesses which may be entitled to a grant to check the criteria and apply if they are eligible.”

WHITTLESEY PLAY AREA REOPENS FOLLOWING EXPANSION A new and improved play area has reopened in Whittlesey thanks to a £135,000 makeover.

Snowley Park play area, off Stonald Road, has reopened with new basket swings, a net and tower slide, see-saw, roundabout, five-way swings, spinners and a rope walk.

Other features include a new scramble net, balance beam, a slide and a new goal area, as well as all new safety surfacing. New benches are also being installed in the coming weeks.

The expansion, which was designed and built by leading play supplier HAGS, incorporated existing trees and grassed mounds into the design. It was completed just before Christmas and was funded with a £45,000 grant from FCC Communities Foundation and Section 106 monies from the council.

Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, said: “This new and improved play area looks fantastic and will make a huge difference to the lives of families and young people living in the area. I’m delighted it reopened in time for children to enjoy it and get some much-needed exercise while we all face being indoors in this latest lockdown.

“As part of the bid process we consulted with local people and this is what they told us they wanted so I am delighted that local people will now benefit from this investment. This is a fantastic example of how the 18

PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE Fenland District Council has set out how it plans to serve the district over the next twelve months in the face of unprecedented challenges – and is encouraging the public to have their say.

Residents are being invited to share their views on the council’s budget proposals and Draft Business Plan for 2021/22, which identify the authority’s key priorities for the year and explain how it will manage its finances.

Strawberry TART HEARTS

The way to the heart is definitely through the stomach... and with just four ingredients, these perfect pastry puds are a dream to make so why not treat that special someone to some ‘sweet love’ on Valentine's Day?!

Ingredients

Makes four (4½ Syns per tart) 100g ready-rolled reduced-fat puff pastry 8 tsp fat-free natural fromage frais 8 small fresh strawberries, hulled and thinly sliced ½ level tsp icing sugar Find this recipe and many more at www.slimmingworld.co.uk

Method

• Pre-heat your oven to 220°C/fan 200°C/gas 7.

• Cut out four hearts measuring about 8cm x 8cm from the pastry using a heart-shaped cutter (or use a template made from card). Using a sharp knife, score a 0.25cm border around the edges, taking care not to cut through the pastry.

• Put the pastry hearts in a baking tray lined with non stick baking paper and bake for 10-12 minutes or until risen and golden. Leave to cool.

• Press down the middle of each piece of pastry to create heart-shaped nests. Spoon the fromage frais into each tartlet, top with the strawberries and evenly dust with icing sugar to serve.

he wine productions of Germany utilise numerous grape varieties. High-quality Riesling wines are famous around the world and have wine lovers appreciating them globally. The Association of German Pradikat Wine Estates (VDP), operating with strict guidelines, ensures cultivations of the very best varietals.

Multi-award-winning Weingut Kloster Eberbach produces an excellent range of wines and their vineyard is renowned worldwide. The Eberbach Monastery was founded during 1136 and the monks established a cabinet wine cellar (Cabinetkeller) for their finest wines. White wines from Weingut Kloster Eberbach have become very popular options for many. Lesser-known red productions are now being appreciated too.

Favourite Riesling wines include Berg Roseneck (Cabinetkeller) and Steinberg (Cabinetkeller).

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL AS CARE HOME KICK-STARTS THE YEAR WITH COVID-19 VACCINES

rchard House Care Home definitely started the year as they mean to go on. They have led the way in the first round of COVID-19 vaccinations for both residents and staff, but they also launched their 30th anniversary celebrations for RCH Care Homes which will see a year of events and new initiatives being launched throughout 2021. The residents have also enjoyed the start of the January lifestyle events campaign which has included taking part in National Shortbread Day, International Flower Day, Burns Night, National Puzzle Day, Make a Wish Come True Day, National Croissant Day and Storytelling Week.

During the month of January, residents and staff have been part of the first round of COVID-19 vaccinations in the Wisbech area. Co-ordinated by Wisbech Primary Care Network (PCN), parts of the NHS and the local authority, they liaised with Maxine Bain, the home’s registered manager, to schedule a time to come into the home and vaccinate all residents and staff who were able to receive the vaccine.

Life in Lockdown at the Age of Ninety-one

Julie Symcox, co-founder of AHM Installations, tells us how life has changed – both for her and her ninety-one-year old father, Ray – during lockdown.

I

’ve worked as a nanny and nurse, in residential care homes and as a Samaritan, and we now run an accessible bathrooms business. We’re lucky to live next door to my ninety-oneyear-old father, Ray. We’ve always been a close family, but Dad and I became closer when Mum sadly passed away in 2013. bathrooms safer, at a cost they can afford.

“When the pandemic started, the first few weeks were alright,” Dad said. “It was so quiet; you could hear the sound of birds. It felt very restful. I’ve kept busy around the house and garden. I’m head cook and bottle-washer, so I don’t have any spare time!

I do miss some things though like the weekly luncheon club at the village hall. I haven’t seen friends since March. And I miss going to the pub on a Friday.”

BRIGHTER NEWS ON THE HORIZON – By Steve Barclay MP

I

was delighted to be able to confirm that March is to be awarded £6.447 million as part of the Government’s Future High Streets Fund.

March was one of just fifty town centres to be shortlisted back in March and since then I have had numerous meetings with the minister responsible, Kelly Tolhurst, to ensure the bid had the best chance of success. Credit should go to the many who have been involved and consulted, including members and officers of Fenland District Council, March Town Council, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, Cambridgeshire County Council, and – most importantly – the residents of March who contributed their views and opinions as part of the community consultation.

This sum of money is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring positive change to March town centre, including transforming Broad Street to create more pedestrian space and reduce traffic, and opening up the underused riverside areas providing improved access and seating.

Other plans include redeveloping the historic Market Place to make it more of a community space, regenerating the Acre Road area and bringing vacant buildings back into use.

It is a key priority of mine to secure additional government investment for our area to ensure Fenland and East Cambridgeshire unlocks its full potential. We’ve had a raft of investment in recent months for arts and heritage, homeless projects, pedestrian and cycleways and much more.

It is a bit of good news when the world is dominated by talk of the pandemic and the

ever-increasing death toll. As I write, lockdown stretches ahead of us and infection rates are rising. It is great news that a third COVID vaccine (made by Moderna) has now been approved for use in the UK. As a member of the Government’s Vaccine Taskforce, I believe the pace and ambition of the vaccine rollout is reassuring. The vaccination programme is well underway in North East Cambridgeshire with many vaccination sites up and running and more will be open by the time this goes to print. Provided you are registered with a local GP, residents will be contacted by text, phone call or letter when it’s your turn to book an appointment. High-risk people will be vaccinated first and I want to encourage all of you who are invited in for vaccination to take up the offer without delay.

As I’ve said before, there are lots of amazing volunteers and organisations stepping up during this difficult period to help those who need it most. One of those I’ve been in touch with is Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough where the team and volunteers continue to work tirelessly supporting older people whether helping with shopping and deliveries, supporting those recently discharged from hospital, sewing facemasks, or driving donations. One thing you may be able to help with is to become a telephone befriender who makes regular friendship calls to older people to help reduce isolation and loneliness. It makes an enormous difference to those receiving the call. I’d urge anyone who can to think about joining – Age UK provides an online induction and regular keep in

In the meantime, it’s important to keep ourselves and our families safe by following guidance and staying at home.

In the last few weeks before lockdown, I dropped into Fenland Youth Radio in Whittlesey to hand over a cheque for £9638 from the National Lottery Fund and have a chat on-air. This is a tremendous project that was set up during the first lockdown and has gone from strength to strength. This money will go a long way and enable the team to engage with more people in the community, both young and old, and develop further projects like the current work encouraging disabled youngsters to have a voice and working to develop their own show.

I was also at March Bears Rugby Club to hear about their ambitious and exciting plans for the future to buy and develop a new March Bears home ground and club at Knights End Road. I’m a strong supporter of community sport and it has been fabulous to watch the club flourish and grow recently. The physical and mental health benefits of local sport plus the camaraderie and sense of belonging to a team should never be underestimated.

The March Bears’ vision could have a transformative effect on sporting provision in the area and I look forward to following their progress and supporting as the plans develop.

Saving Money At The End Of The Tax Year INCOME TAX

Check your tax code

Your tax code indicates how much HMRC will collect from your salary; looking at it another way it indicates the amount on which you do not pay tax. If you don’t know where to find it, look on your pay slip if you are employed; otherwise, a tax code should have been sent to you earlier in the year. If you don’t know whether it is correct or not speak to an independent financial adviser.

Claim tax credits

Tax credits provide extra money to disabled workers, other workers on low incomes and those looking after children. The two main ones are working tax credits and the child tax credits.

You can look up the criteria for claiming these.

Paying into a pension scheme

If you are employed there is likely to be a workplace pension scheme (although there are circumstances when such an arrangement will not be offered), but this does not prevent you from making tax efficient contributions to one. The Government will top up your pension contribution with tax relief giving you a free bonus for saving towards your retirement.

The marriage allowance benefit

If married or in a civil partnership you can transfer any unused personal allowance from the lower earning partner to the higher earner. There are limits and conditions, however in many cases a non-earner can gift part of his or her allowance to the main earner thus saving tax for the couple.

Reclaim overpaid taxes

You can claim back 25 percent of your childcare costs up to £500 every three months.

If you are entitled to a company car, consider whether it would be more tax efficient to take the cash equivalent as salary instead.

Switch to a low emission car

Hello, my name is Charlotte. I live in March, Cambridgeshire with my husband, Ian. We both love walking. I have lived in the Fens for most of my forty-four years and have always found its flatness to be dull and uninspiring. But COVID-19 restrictions prompted me to adopt a new perspective towards this region.

Let me tell you why I changed my mind...

s a teenager, I remember feeling envious of friends who got to go to Spain, France or Portugal for their family holidays. My parents did the unspeakable – they bought a touring caravan and dragged me and my two younger brothers off to Yorkshire every year for a 'walking holiday'. The sulky teen in me claimed to despise every minute of it, when the truth was, I really enjoyed it.

Ever since, I have always chosen to walk in hills or mountains; the Cairngorms in the Scottish Highlands, the Tirol Valley in Austria, the French Pyrenees, the Yorkshire and Derbyshire Dales, the North Yorkshire Moors, with the assumption that these landscapes were the key ingredient.

Ian wasn't sure about walking holidays at first. But after a week in Rosedale Abbey in the heart of the North York Moors National Park, he was hooked. We were very much looking forward to our next holiday in Reeth, Yorkshire, for April 2020.

Enter COVID-19, followed by the national lockdown. The disappointment of having to cancel our holiday was utterly overshadowed by the fear and confusion of what was going on around us. We continued our daily walk down Flagrass Hill Road for the first few weeks – solely for exercise and fresh air. But we'd walked it a million times and, truth be told, we never found it interesting or scenic. And it was too short. We stopped walking.

A month passed. Cabin fever set in. We needed to stretch our legs. But where could we go that didn't mean breaking the 'avoid all non-essential travel' rule?

Mum to the rescue! “Do the Woodman's Way,” she said. It must be thirty years ago that I last walked that six-mile route, starting on the outskirts of March and I'd completely forgotten about it. I wasn't hoping for beautiful scenery or breathtaking vistas – this wasn't the Dales or the Moors after all – just somewhere different to walk. We'd give it a go!

Five minutes into the walk, past the houses backing onto Barker's Lane, we came upon a family of foxes up ahead, a mother and her two cubs, lazing in the sunshine. What a treat! Suddenly I knew what I wanted for my next birthday… binoculars! I also invested in a holster-style camera bag for my DSLR camera as I wasn't going to miss a photo opportunity like that again!

The path then bore sharp right to a treelined track which follows the old railway line.

Although virtually all traces of the railway have long gone, we could still see parts of the embankment here and there. This section of the walk was particularly lovely in mid-May – the trees in full blossom; patches of bluebells adorning the verges; wildflowers scattered amongst the long grass bordering the field boundaries.

Our journey took us alongside paddocks and hedgerows, across fields and past farmsteads. We spotted horses grazing, the white tails of rabbits diving for cover and a variety of wild birds.

We completed the Woodman's Way four times from May to August, on foot and on bikes. As the season changed from spring to summer, changes in light, flora and weather made each trip unique.

With this new-found enthusiasm for walking in our locale, I was keen to discover what else this region had to offer and have since enjoyed walks throughout Cambridgeshire and in neighbouring Norfolk.

In these uncertain times, it is more crucial than ever to take joy from what's around you. Walking in this area has opened our eyes to the natural beauty right on our doorstep – something we may not have discovered had it not been for recent events.

So, if you believe, like I once did, that this area is dull and uninspiring, take a walk. It could very well change your mind.

Working Together In The Community

any of you will know that the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street is the admin, storage, and distribution centre for Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid (WEFA).

Last year had its fair share of challenges, but what has shone through is the tremendous support from the local community to help those in need within the Whittlesey catchment area. The WEFA team take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has donated food, essential items or given monetary donations over the past year especially in the run-up to Christmas.

This has been and continues to be a true example of the community working together, we simply couldn’t have achieved it without everyone playing their part. Whether you are a business, supermarket, church, school or an individual or a local group that gave generously or you volunteered to help make up the Christmas parcels, every contribution was greatly appreciated.

The team spirit and everyone working and contributing towards the same goal reminded me of the bible scripture found in Matthew 12 v18-20; ‘But in fact, God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be.

If they were all one part where would the body be? As it is there are many parts but one body.’

This likens the church to our physical body where every part is important and can’t function without the other. This is similar to how WEFA combines everyone’s support to make it work. We are open on Wednesdays and Fridays with collection by prior arrangement, just call the number below.
