Inside Highlights

At the time of writing, we’re still very much wrapped up in 2019 and the final throes of the year, with its Christmas parties, Santa appearing here and there, the carols and all the end-of term concerts, all of which make it such a fabulous time of year.

The last few weeks have been particularly special for me.

Our beautiful (canine!) baby George was one year old on November 27th, whilst two days later, our youngest “beautiful baby”, Ed, turned eighteen. Watch out world!!!

As we start a new decade with this month, I hope our readers love our new front cover, along with a new “kids page”, and we all look forward to even more exciting articles in 2020.

In the meantime, I wish you a Happy New Year and may it bring peace, happiness and good health to everyone.

Straw Bear Festival

Whittlesey’s famous Straw Bear Festival returns this month with another action-packed weekend guaranteed to entertain residents and visitors to the town.

United at 12.30pm-1.30pm and 3.30pm-4.30pm and Sunjay at 2pm-3pm, again for free.

The fun kicks off at the Ivy Leaf Club in Gracious Street on Friday, January 17th with entertainment

by Causton & Walker and the Boxwood Chessmen.

Saturday night will see a barn dance from 8pm until 11.30pm at the Sir Harry Smith Community College featuring News of the Victory.

While on Saturday, January 18th the main action will take place around the town and will include a host of attractions.

While Sunday, January 19th from noon until 2.30pm at Sir Harry Smith Community College will feature the traditional Bear Burning and procession, accompanied by performances from various dance sides and musicians. Make a date in the diary and join in the weekend of fun…

As well as the various dance sides, there will be free storyteller sessions at the Methodist United Reform Church in Queen Street at noon, 12.30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm featuring Hannah Brailsford while the Town Hall sessions will feature Poets

Your Garden

JANUARY Gardening Tips Now that the rush of Christmas is over, and you have had your fill of the home-grown sprouts, it is time to take stock of last year’s triumphs and failures. You could now spend time planning a crop rotation to get the best out of your plot. You could work on a three or five-year crop rotation which prevents the soil from becoming exhausted from growing the same crop continually, taking the same nutrients out of the soil. It also reduces the risk of pests and diseases becoming established and then finding them very difficult to eradicate.

The three-year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots –leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop.

Year 2: Brassicas – are nitrogen-hungry, grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soilborne fungus) so moving them around helps keep this at bay.

Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen, so it is good to grow them after brassicas where the nitrogen content has been depleted.

And, if you have a very large plot, why not try a five-year rotation?

Year 1: Brassicas.

Year 2: Peas and beans.

Year 3: Potatoes and fruiting vegetables.

Year 4: The onion family.

Year 5: Root and stem vegetables.

There are still one or two jobs that you can be doing to maintain the plot and make the best of your remaining crops: • Start a bean trench by digging down about 60cm and then start filling it with your organic kitchen waste. Each time you add a batch of waste, cover with a layer of soil: continue until the trench is full and leave it to rot down.

• Draw the soil up around the stalks of cabbages and winter cauliflowers to just under the first set of leaves. Check over Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli and support them with a strong stake to prevent them from being blown over in high winds.

• At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, or even a pile of straw, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February?

• It’s a good time of year for a spot of cleaning: seed trays and plant pots can be cleaned with a mild bleach solution to kill diseases that may have carried over to the new seedlings.

• Finally, at the end of the month seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them in seed trays ready for planting.

Year 5 pupils from Whittlesey’s Park Lane Primary and Nursery School have acted out an outstanding performance.

Entitled ‘Bully’, the pupils managed to pull off an incredible production, amazing parents with their acting talents.

Lots of children took time learning lines so they could become the fiery, rebellious characters (bullies).

After just seven or eight days of practice, they became fierce bullies in the show causing havoc and mayhem before stopping bullying to show that it is wrong. Bullying is a problem in most establishments and can have a huge impact on some people.

There are many types of bullying, verbal (using words), physical (actually touching), cyber (on the internet) and indirect (behind their backs).

The production showed two examples of bullying; indirect and verbal. Emotive bullying can be found even in the nicest people, because there is a theory that people bully because they’re being bullied.

Mrs Gregory, a past Year 5 teacher, said: “I thought the singing was brilliant and they learnt more songs than last year. I also thought the children with solos were very brave.”

Mr Litten, the executive head teacher, explained to the parents after the show that he thought it was a strong message and all pupils did wonderfully well with Park Lane teachers hoping this will stop children bullying.

JU JITSU MEMBERS AWARDED BLACK BELTS Five members of Fenland Ju Jitsu went to Essex in December for black belt gradings and all were successful.

Dean Thompson was awarded his first Dan black belt, Joe Jones, Seb King and Chris Ward were awarded their fourth Dan, with credit, and Emily Ward achieved her junior black belt.

Emily was the first member of the club to persevere and work through all the belts from Little Dragons, where she started at the age of four, through to her junior black belt. Sensei Martin Hunnable was very proud of all the fantastic effort they put in to achieve their belts.

COUNCIL GOES CONTACTLESS Fenland residents can now pay for their council services using contactless payments.

A Fenland District Council spokesman said: “As a council we are constantly looking for ways to improve the service we offer to our residents. Installing new, modern machines that offer contactless will make payments easier, faster and more secure.

Fantastic weather for the time of year greeted the annual Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza which took place in and around the Market Place on Saturday, December 7th.

Local residents and their families turned out in force to support the annual event which saw more stalls selling Christmas goodies as well as the usual charity stalls. For the first time there was the additional attraction of a simulator ride which proved very popular with the older children and adults.

Whittlesey Christmas Extravaganza chairperson Lynn Palmer said, as always, an event such as this costs a lot of money to put on and the group would not have been able to do it without the support of donations and sponsorship from local businesses and organisations.

On behalf of the committee, she thanked Whittlesey Town Council, Fenland District Council, Malcolm James, Graham Abblittt, Whittlesey Business Forum, J Jones Butchers, Lucy’s Flowers, Homme Nouveau, Gym UK, Vesuvio, Ben Burgess, The Falcon Hotel, The Black Bull, Ability, Crogg and Whitehead, Forterra, RWS Windows, Kellyvision. Apologies to anyone missed!

Thanks also go to Parkers newsagents for selling the wristbands on the group’s behalf, Whittlesey Round Table and Tangent for supplying Santa’s Grotto.

Do I have to use the Property Lawyer my Estate Agent is Recommending?

This is something I hear on a daily basis; the quick answer is “NO”.

When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor or a licensed conveyancer/ property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a ‘referral fee’.

This fee is usually passed on to you, the client.

You may be surprised to learn that some ‘referral fees’ are in the £100s, simply for your conveyancing business. This is why conveyancing fees vary so widely.

Read the small print before you sign any agreements!

Every law firm should detail how much they receive from the estate agent for passing business to them. The Solicitors Regulation Authority and The Council for Licensed Conveyancers, which regulates conveyancing solicitors and licensed conveyancers, has a strict referral code.

Solicitors/licensed conveyancers are required to set out a full quotation which details their fees, the disbursement costs and associated expenses with your transaction. They are also required to reveal how much they paid for your referral. Look at this closely! I suggest you ask the solicitor/licensed conveyancer/property lawyer for details of the referral fee they have paid for your (potential) custom. In addition to checking the amount of money you, the client, are paying for your referred business, I strongly recommend that you get at least three quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for 18

leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. I also suggest that you search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with.

In summary, when buying or selling a property it is vital that you appoint a lawyer that you can trust to act in your best interests, who will have the experience to complete the transaction properly and in timely manner and who will charge you a fair price for doing so.

Everyone has the right to choose their own lawyer.

Both the Solicitor’s Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Council for Licensed Conveyancers (CLC) rigorously state that its members are meant to ensure that their client has chosen them to act without pressure being exerted upon them to do so.

If you are being pressurised into choosing a lawyer as outlined above refuse firmly and advise that you will seek the advice of the SRA or CLC – this usually does the trick!

A New Year and New Warning About Selfassessment Scams

by Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades WITH the New Year comes a clean slate, business goals, resolutions and, of course, filling in those self-assessment forms. The January 31st deadline is approaching fast, and in the run up, HM Revenue and Customs is warning millions of self-assessment customers to be aware of fraudsters.

Worryingly, over the last year, HMRC received nearly 900,000 reports from the public about suspicious HMRC contact, either through phone calls, texts or e-mails. More than 100,000 of these were phone scams, while over 620,000 reports from the public were about bogus tax rebates.

Fraudsters use a range of techniques to scam cash from hard-working individuals, with some of the most common including phoning taxpayers offering a fake tax refund, or pretending to be HMRC by texting or e-mailing a link which will take customers to a false page, where their bank details and money will be stolen. Fraudsters are also known to threaten victims with arrest or imprisonment if a bogus tax bill is not paid immediately.

As well as the assembly, the Year 5 children had a performance from Abbie Ayre and the Shed of Science. This was a fantastic, fully funded air quality and sustainable travel education programme run

by Cambridgeshire County Council. The feedback from the Year 5 children was really positive and the children were able to take away practical ideas that they can do to help save our planet.

Alderman Jacobs School has also continued to receive an award for safe travel. It has achieved bronze level stars awards for the past two years and is now aiming for the silver award in 2020. A scooter rack received free of charge for achieving the award is waiting to be safely installed on the playground for children to use.

As part of the new Road Safety Action Group, the school and FOAJS have also recently purchased a ‘DO NOT STOP ON THE ZIG ZAGS’ banner. This is now displayed outside the front of school, to encourage cars not to park within the close proximity of the school.

‘FRED AND WILMA’ LEAD SCHOOL SAFETY CAMPAIGN Alderman Jacobs School has continually, proactively promoted road safety with all children over the last few years.

The Whittlesey school has held a road safety assembly where a new safety song was introduced which the children have enjoyed singing along to.

Discussions were held on how to keep safe around school and new student mascots ‘Fred and Wilma’ were introduced, kindly purchased by Friends of Alderman Jacobs School. These are road safety cones, disguised as children in AJS uniform and placed in the drop off zone.

The children were asked to remind their parents that when Fred and Wilma are out the front of the school, they shouldn’t be parking there, in order to keep the zone free for dropping off and trip buses.

Darcie, the school’s lucky early years winner, won the award for choosing these fabulous names for the new mascots, having been inspired 32

GRANTS TO HELP RESIDENTS KEEP WARM AT HOME Homeowners are being offered help to reduce their energy bills and keep warm and well in their homes this winter thanks to a new grant scheme from Fenland District Council.

Grants are available from the council’s Better Care Fund to install first-time gas central heating or to cover some, or all, of the cost of repairing or replacing broken or inefficient household boilers and electric storage heaters.

The funding will help qualifying residents to save money on their fuel bills and improve the energy efficiency of their homes while keeping them warm and cosy.

NEW PRIVATE LOCAL MOBILE DENTAL SERVICE In the first quarter of 2020 ‘Friends for Needs’ will be bringing a much needed domiciliary dental service to the local area.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) recently published ‘Smiling Matters’ regarding oral health provision in care homes. Its findings show that far too many people living in care homes are not being supported to maintain and improve their oral health. The CQC report stated that one of the challenges in providing access to dental services was a lack of in-house care provision.

The report also noted that 52 percent of the homes it contacted did not have oral health plans in place for residents and 47 percent of staff have never received any specific dental care training. As a result, large numbers of elderly and often vulnerable care home residents are not receiving the level of oral healthcare that is rightly due to them.

Friends for Needs (FFN) is addressing this need by launching the FFN Private Mobile Dental Service to provide cover for the nursing and residential care homes in the Fenland and Peterborough areas.

The FFN Mobile Dental Care Plans include: regular oral health assessments and reviews; fillings; extractions; dentures and denture repairs; dental hygiene; and access to emergency dental services.

FFN will be exhibiting its services and the new private mobile dental service at stand D40 of the Peterborough Biscuit Event on Wednesday, February 5th, 2020.

The scheme is available to Fenland residents who own their property and have bills and benefits registered to that address. Homeowners must also receive a means tested benefit to qualify for the scheme or have a low household income with high energy bills.

Elderly residents, those with a young family, pregnant women or residents with a health condition made worse by the cold, could also qualify for funding.

PETERBOROUGH CATHEDRAL TO HOST BURNS NIGHT SUPPER Anyone with Scottish connections, or who is a fan of Scotland and the Scottish bard, ‘Rabbie’ Burns, may like to know that Peterborough Cathedral is hosting a Burns Night Supper on Saturday, January 18th 2020.

The Supper, complete with the traditional piper and recitations, will be held in the evocative setting of the Cathedral’s North Transept and will include a ceilidh with a caller and live music from the band, Hannibal’s Heroes.

Guests are invited to wear a kilt, or something tartan as part of their outfit. With a three-course meal and whisky toasts included alongside the ceilidh, this promises to be an evening to remember, and it starts at 7pm.

CHEESY LEEKS & HAM Quick and simple to make, and low in carbohydrates - this satisfying and tasty dish is perfect for the new year! You can also try serving it with jacket potatoes... just bake them in the oven for forty minutes before cooking the leeks, then split them open and serve the leeks on top.

Method

Ingredients

8 small leeks, white part only 8 slices cooked ham 100g grated Cheddar cheese 2 tbsp Dijon mustard 6 tbsp crème fraîche (full or half-fat)

• Heat oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Cook the leeks in a pan of boiling salted water for four to five minutes or until just tender. Drain and cool under a cold tap to stop them from cooking any further, then drain again well and pat dry on kitchen paper.

• Wrap each leek in a slice of ham, then arrange, side-by-side, in a large baking dish. Mix the cheddar in a bowl with the mustard and crème fraîche, until well combined. Season to taste. Spread over the leeks, then bake for fifteen to twenty minutes until bubbling and golden brown. Serve at once with plenty of crusty bread to mop up the juices.

Wines Worth Locating BOLLLICINE

B

olllicine is derived from the word bollicine (bubbles). The vines are located to the eastern side of Veneto in north-eastern Italy. Bolllicine came about because of a game played in a garden, where bottles of sparkling wine were opened, with the corks propelled across the garden. The distance travelled by each cork was measured. The furthest distance was marked with a small flag with two ‘L’s. Chardonnay Riesling di Bolllicine then beat the ‘record’ and was noted with three ‘L’s on the flag. Other Bolllicine products followed, with unique designs and high quality, defined by organic contact and methods of production.

Violè – Spumante Rosato Extra Dry (Grapes: Pinot Nero) has an attractive, light violet colour.

The aroma is inviting, certainly. Aged for at least thirty-six months, this produces a full-bodied, floral flavour, which is acquired during the ageing process. The Green-Spumante Extra Dry Millesimato (Grapes: Pinot Blanco, Verduzzo) has sixty days’ fermentation, using the Charmat Method. A very good bouquet, with fruits, entices to the splendid, fresh mouthfeel and palate sensation, beyond. This is an elegant wine that constantly adorns many dining tables.

Prosecco-DOC Extra Dry (Grapes: Glera) is sparkling and fresh. An all-round, everyday pleaser, this wine needs little introduction. It has a fruity bouquet, good tropical fruit flavours and is wonderful as an apéritif. It is perfect to pair with fish or seafood

cuisine. Chardonnay & Riesling – Spumante Brut Millesimato (Grapes: Chardonnay, Riesling Renano) is a fruit-inspired production that has one hundred and eighty days of fermentation using the Charmat Method. Again, another often-selected wine and very popular for events and occasions.

These sparkling wines are great as apéritifs, as well as being fabulous accompaniments to many dishes of cuisine, including, fish, seafood and white meats.

The bottles can be ‘personalised’ – so, for a special occasion or event, that is a grand idea.

THE IVY LEAF CLUB:

NEW YEAR

New Plans The Ivy Leaf Club in Whittlesey has undergone a massive transformation over the past few months.

C

hairman Mark Smith has overseen a raft of changes at the club since taking over the role in May 2019 including a new management structure to oversee the club’s activities.

He said: “We’ve introduced entertainment and finance committees with one looking at functions and the other looking to see if they are viable and make financial sense, which report into the main committee.”

Recent improvements to the club’s facilities include: the renewal of BT Sport in the members’ bar and the introduction of Sky Sports; the purchase of new items including a new ice machine and freezers; the refurbishment of male and female toilets; and the redecorating of part of the club which will continue this year.

And the new moves have already borne fruition with 300 new members being added, with the club membership now standing at around 1100.

The club recently obtained a 5-star food hygiene rating and in 2020 is planning further improvements to the kitchen area to enable it to provide an even higher quality selection of hot food to add to the

When is a Court of Protection Health and Welfare Order Needed? BY HOLLY WEBB

An important part of being fully prepared for later life is by making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This will nominate a trusted friend or family member who will make important decisions on your behalf in the eventuality that you no longer have the capacity to make these decisions yourself.

Before you make an LPA, you need to demonstrate that you have the capacity to do so. If you need to appoint an attorney but are deemed to no longer have capacity, you will not be able to do so. Some people do find themselves in the position where they no longer have capacity and have not appointed anyone to make health and welfare decisions on their behalf.

In these circumstances, the Mental Capacity Act 2005 does allow family members and other carers to make decisions relating to a person’s care and treatment. Family members and carers do not need permission from the court to help someone to wash, dress or feed themselves. It is also permissible to buy shopping and necessary goods for them using their own money and arrange homecare, services and repairs or maintenance.

Those caring for a person who lacks capacity are also allowed to carry out diagnostic tests to identify an illness, give medication and arrange professional medical treatment. They are also allowed to arrange care in an emergency. There are limits to this. The person must be reasonably deemed to lack capacity to make the decision themselves and it is vitally important that any decisions made, or actions taken are in that person’s best interests.

If the decision is about where the person is to permanently reside or if there is a disagreement over what is considered to be in the person’s best

interests then an application will have to be made to the Court of Protection who will make a one-off decision on the matter.

As a rule, the Court of Protection is unlikely to appoint a health and welfare deputy unless ongoing welfare decisions will need to be made.

Deputies are more likely to be appointed in cases where a person suffers from a progressive illness or profound learning disabilities and will require a series of medical decisions to be made on their behalf over a period of time.

If the Court of Protection does appoint a deputy, there is no guarantee that they would have been the first choice of the person needing decisions made on their behalf. While you have the capacity to do so, it is very important to make a Lasting Power of Attorney to put you in control of who will manage your affairs in the event that you are no longer able to.

Matters LADYSMITH PLANS 2020 ACTIVITIES

Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I’s 2020 programme will be really varied including crafting, art, interesting speakers and, of course, the usual parties and outings.

There will again be seasonal competitions in March, August and November, as well as the monthly ones, so lots to look forward to in the coming year.

The annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 14th at 7.30pm in St. Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane together with a fish and chip supper. The competition will be ‘something made of wood’.

Group Spotlight

M

uch research has been done to prove that being involved with music, particularly singing, is good for us.

Not only does it exercise the lungs and vocal chords, but also benefits upper body muscles, important nerves, and the immune system. It can help towards important improvements in wellbeing, increasing self-confidence, relieving stress, reducing depression and helping to counter loneliness and isolation. Songs remain in our memory far longer than many things, and singing can be very beneficial for those with dementia.

Joining a singing group is now being suggested by some GPs rather than anti-depressants.

Now Whittlesey has its own singing group. Early last year a couple moved here from Norfolk who, as carers, had enjoyed a dementia friendly singing group, and were looking for a similar group to join.

They discovered that nothing existed in Whittlesey and mentioned this at the local Alzheimer's Society Carers' Group, which contacted the Cambridgeshire Care Network, who had helped set up singing groups in Wisbech and March. It got in touch with Kathryn Gray, who also attended the carers' group, and plays the guitar, and so Music Makers was born, the first meeting taking place in September 2018.

The purpose of the group is to provide a place where older people, including those with memory problems, can meet socially to enjoy an afternoon 50

of singing. It is not a choir, with the commitment and discipline implicit in such a group, although some may wish to join one as they gain in confidence. At the moment there are usually between twelve to sixteen singers, but it is early days for the group, and as it becomes more wellknown, no doubt more people will want to join.

The meetings are very relaxed and informal, with a break for tea halfway through for just £1. Kathryn usually suggests the first couple of songs and then the participants decide what else they will sing. The group’s repertoire is very varied, from war time songs through to The Beatles and Abba, and song books are provided for those who may be unsure of the lyrics. Naturally, they are all well-known and easy to sing – the emphasis is on fun. Normally members sing to Kathryn's guitar, but for the Christmas meeting, a guest pianist joined them and that, along with the mince pies, made it a bit special.

Music Makers meets on the first Thursday of every month from 2.30pm until 4pm at the Queen Street Methodist Church. For more information contact Kathryn Gray on 01733 351594. Singing makes you feel good, it does you good too!

The Benefits of In-house Diagnostics

Veterinary surgeons often have to run tests to help diagnose an illness and to check how your pet is doing if they have a long-term illness or are on long term medications.

Here at Whittlesey Veterinary Centre, we have our own in-house, fully equipped laboratory facilities. This means we can offer our clients a quick turnaround for initial test results, with results normally available the same day. We are then able to deal with emergencies and start any necessary treatment sooner, improving our patients’ wellbeing and it can often be life saving.

Laboratory tests available for your pet: • Biochemistry, where we can check how our patients’ vital organs e.g. liver and kidneys are functioning.

• Haematology, where we can check our patients’ blood cells e.g. how well the red blood cells are carrying oxygen around the body, if the white blood cells are indicating any infection present and if their blood can clot sufficiently to stop bleeding.

• Pre-anaesthetic blood tests, especially important for elderly patients to check how their organs are functioning before we give them an anaesthetic.

Signs are not necessarily seen until later on in the decline of the function of your pet’s organs.

• Feline leukaemia and feline immunodeficiency virus blood tests.

• Thyroid blood test, to check their thyroid gland is functioning normally.

• Cortisol blood test, to check if they have a disease known as Cushing’s.

• Pancreatitis blood test, which will tell us if there is a problem with their pancreas.

• Bile acid blood test, to check if their liver is functioning normally.

• Fructosamine blood test, where we can check for diabetes.

• Microscopy work, looking at blood, urine, faeces, samples from lumps, swabs from ears and parasites under the microscope.

If we need confirmation of any results obtained inhouse or need to perform more in-depth tests, we have access to an external laboratory.

We also have a veterinarian who can issue passports, complete export paperwork and take bloods for rabies titre tests which is performed at an external laboratory.

• Urine tests, where we can check for inflammation or infection of the bladder, crystals and help to indicate diabetes or kidney disease.

Your recyclables are delivered to the Waterbeach Waste Management Park and the ‘Materials Recycling Facility’ at the site separates out the paper, card, plastics and cans ready for reprocessing into new products.

When your rubbish is collected, it is delivered to the Waterbeach Waste Management Park in Cambridgeshire.

Your rubbish is put through a ‘Mechanical and Biological Treatment’ process which separates out recyclable materials that may have been missed and reduces the organic fraction of the waste through a composting process before it is landfilled.

reducing our waste – say no to single use plastic, get creative with leftover food, buy quality items that last!

REUSE: A lot of things can be reused – take a refillable bottle or cup with you, re-cover an old chair, sell unwanted clothes or give them to charity!

Your food and garden waste is composted at the Waterbeach Waste Management Park to create a soil improver which residents can collect for free from the site. It is a rich source of nutrients and is used by gardeners, allotment holders, landscapers and farmers.

Fixed Interest Investment Warning

Cautious investment portfolios usually contain a high proportion of underlying investments described as ‘Fixed Interest’, this is because traditionally they feature low volatility and react differently to property and equity investment markets. There might be a change on the horizon.

Fixed interest is traditionally based on loaning funds to a government or a company for example. The loan is agreed, and interest is paid to the lender (fixed interest). On this basis the lender receives an income whether the stock market goes up or down and irrespective of property market valuations.

The net return to investors is normally better than cash and is less volatile than the equity market, which is why this asset class sits at the heart of cautious investments – but something else has developed: Interest rates for cash has been very low for several years and inflation is low and some commentators predict that it will remain low or may go lower (what do they know about current affairs that we don’t?).

There is a perception within the investment world that fixed interest is currently over valued following a long spell of what is considered by many to be ‘over performance’. If this is right, we should beware of a market correction.

The purpose of this warning is that if you are merely crossing your fingers in the hope that everything will be OK, that is fine if you know

what you are doing. If you are concerned, I recommend a professional review of what has normally been described as safe. There is even a view that equities, that are normally considered to be more risky, could become a safer haven when wisely selected – food for thought!

This Month: New Year Goals by Dave Bailey appy New Year to you all! Having survived Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the obligatory Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year sales, what resolutions have you already broken?

Those of us who received new instruments or musical tech will have by now exhausted either the batteries or the initial joy of finding all the hidden features, benefits or shortcomings of either the gadget or instruction manual (whoever reads them?), but what about the instrument’s playability?

Like the wrapping paper that you tore off with excitement that you discarded on the floor on Christmas morning, your shiny new present may by now be laying in the corner.

The build quality of budget and used stringed instruments can vary significantly and often even a really good make can benefit from a trip to a workshop to be set up and improved. As discussed in previous issues, the string height, neck and bridge of stringed instruments, whether acoustic or solid, can vary from ‘stage ready’ straight out of the box to totally un-playable.

This has always been one of the major hurdles for inspiration and creativity, especially for beginners.

Most instruments have a metal rod through the neck (truss) which is designed to keep the neck straight whilst under tension from the strings and

part of a good service will be to evaluate and adjust it.

Guitars and banjos will mostly have frets, wires used to shorten the string length and change the pitch/ note. These can be set at different heights during manufacture or through wear and may result in string buzz. Levelling, crowning and adjusting these frets by a professional will certainly improve the action and on a used instrument may be the reason it was sold by the previous owner.

Dressing and levelling also ensure reduced string buzzing once all the high spots have been levelled.

The bridge and top nut (where the string is held at each end) can also cause issues and a misaligned bridge will affect the instrument’s intonation (where even correct finger placement to play a chord results in a note or notes that are out of tune).

There are a number of competent guitar and bowed violin/viola luthiers across the county for both classical and rock stringed instruments who can perform almost miracles on your pride and joy.

Of course, this comes at a price, but the difference in playability of a correctly set up instrument compared to a worn or used model makes the investment worthwhile and any good instrument technician will advise if the investment is warranted as part of the initial assessment.

Once you are happy with the feel it’s now time to concentrate on genre, technique or style and to regain that initial rush from your new acquisition.

Christian Unity “Jesus prayed All mine are yours, and yours are mine; and I have been glorified in them. And now I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.”

This prayer of Jesus is a conversation with his father.

Jesus asks that all his followers might be one. One in faith in the Son of God. He expects his disciples to be united with each other.

By the sacrament of baptism, we all share in our membership of the Church that is Christ’s body on earth. When a child or adult is baptised in one of our parish churches, they receive a certificate. On the back of this document is a list of all the Christian denominations who recognise each other’s rites of baptism. Roman Catholic, Methodist, Church of England and others. What this says is quite profound.

Instead of looking upon each other as we may have done in the past, as the opposition or even as nonChristians, we are to look upon each as brothers and sisters in Christ members of one church.

January is the month in which we are particularly asked to think and pray about Christian unity. We are invited to attend the Methodist Covenant service as a way to renew our commitment to Jesus at the start of the New year and strengthen our bonds of friendship with the Queens Street congregation. The week of prayer for Christian Unity, January 18th to the 25th, provides us with the opportunity to pray for each other and for the unity for which Christ himself prayed. We know during this week that when we pray, we are spiritually united with like-minded people around the world.

If you share our faith in Jesus please find time to pray his words at the top of this article. One day we will get beyond the conceit, ignorance and prejudice that keeps peoples apart and Jesus’ prayer will be fulfilled.

A Huge Thank You To Whittlesey Christmas and the New Year are behind us and we now anticipate the challenges or blessings 2020 will bring. As a church, one thing we are certain of, is that this year God will be surprising us with his goodness as we continue to trust him.

In 2014 our church, together with Councillor David Mason and Sue Jennings established Whittlesey Emergency Food Aid and freely offered its premises and expertise to become the storage, administration, and distribution centre. Since then it has gone from strength to strength in being a vital help for the schools, housing associations, library, clinics, various agencies and case workers etc, who refer and encourage those they are serving to access the many ways WEFA is able to help them.

I’m writing this before those in receipt of food aid this year have been given their Christmas hampers. We are hoping in the New Year to provide a couple of photos along with a report containing the wonderful things that took place to make it all happen. Until then, please allow me to say a huge ‘thank you’ to all the groups, churches, businesses, schools and the many private individuals, too many to mention, who have helped to make it a reality. Whittlesey, your generosity has done it again, proving once more that our community should be renamed ‘The Jewel Of The Fens’. Both myself and our church count it an honour to serve and be a part of this community.

Yes, challenges have come, or should I say, opportunities to prove God. Many times, we reached the critical point of demand outstripping supply, and not wanting to let anyone down, we prayed that God would provide. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised, but we are, when someone either brings or calls offering a food donation containing the very item’s we were short of.

Why not make plans to pay us a visit this year, every Sunday at 10.45am?

SLIMMING WORLD SUPPORTS ITS LOCAL FOOD BANK APPEAL Members of Whittlesey PM and Eastrea Slimming World groups have taken part in a reverse advent, where they have been bringing in items for the past month to help local families in need.

BUILDING SUPPORT FOR STEP EDUCATION

Whirlpool Corporation team members chipped in to support STEM education in the region during the FIRST® LEGO® League ‘build event’ held at the company’s Peterborough offices.

During the ‘build event’ LEGO® enthusiasts from Whirlpool donated their time to build more than twenty complex LEGO® models, which will be used at the inaugural FIRST® LEGO® League Whirlpool event to be held on January 18th, 2020.

FIRST® LEGO® League is a global science and technology challenge for nine to sixteen-year-olds, which sees more than 310,000 young people (in 38,800 teams), from across 100 countries, come together to develop their STEM skills.

Anna, who runs the Eastrea groups, said: "I am passionate about fundraising for our local community and I am so proud of everyone who has donated.”

She also ran a raffle in her groups where she raised £70 to buy items not normally donated like sanitary items, toiletries and cleaning products.

Charlene, who runs the Whittlesey PM groups, also had a collection and had already taken some chocolate advent calendars before this haul.

The Whittlesey Food Bank was overwhelmed with all the items donated and stated it would go a long way in helping families in need, passing on its thanks of gratitude to every single person who made this possible.

Pig Dyke Molly Dancers any readers will have seen The Pig Dyke Molly Dancers roaming around the streets in a bewildered fashion and dancing in spots around Cambridgeshire dressed in their striking black and white attire.

Molly dancing is a division of Morris dancing, but far more sophisticated and subtle. Members do not need stIcks, bells or hankies as props for dancing: it’s just the sheer elegance of their art form that delights and entertains the public.

Molly dancing is believed to have originated when the plough boys and farm labourers were out of work and money during the winter. In order to survive they would go and dance or sing to the local squire and gentry who would have been able to store food. It is rumoured that the begging was quite aggressive, with acts such as carrying the plough onto the fine lawns and manicured gardens; hence ‘Plough Monday’, the first Monday after Twelfth Night. If they did not receive any gratuity, they would drag the plough across the lawn. In order not to be recognised they would create disguises such as animal heads, face paint etc.

Pig Dyke Molly has taken this old tradition by the scruff of the neck and brought it up to date.

The group has an age range between eight and eighty, and consists of a very broad variety of women and men with very differing professions and backgrounds. Pig Dyke has a striking visual appearance and vibrant dancing style, coupled with superb and unique music. Bucking the trends of the folk world they have doubled the number of dancers in the past two years. They come together for their sheer love of dancing, entertainment and sociability, with the odd pint of beer being consumed for medicinal purposes occasionally in order to keep the body and joints supple!

The team has enjoyed success for many years and spread the gospel of Molly dancing across the globe. They have danced on several Saint Patrick’s days across in Ireland, in Bourges and Nimes in France, in Greece and twice in America.

Over the Christmas and New Year period Pig Dyke members have taken part in various activities, including carol singing in Peterborough, and dancing on New Year’s Eve in every pub, alehouse, party or hostelry that would accept them in the Whittlesey area. All the money collected from these two events is donated to Macmillan Cancer Care. Each year The Pig Dyke Molly Dancers raise in excess of £1000 and estimate that over the years they have donated about £18,000 to this charity.

They would like to thank everyone who has helped fill the buckets to make this possible, saying it is a privilege to be able to go out and have so much fun and while raising so much money to Macmillan Cancer Care.

Matters DOCTOR IN CHARGE

Peterborough-based charity PECT has appointed Dr Toby Willison, executive director of operations at the Environment Agency, as the new chair of its board.

In his new role, he will work alongside the environmental organisation’s board, staff, volunteers and partners to deliver ambitious plans for the future.

Dr Willison first worked on climate change twentyfive years ago while researching the impact land use change has on carbon fluxes. For the last five years as executive director of operations, he has been responsible for the Environment Agency’s activities to mitigate and respond to climate change.

He said: “The greatest risk in the climate emergency is thinking that someone else will sort it! Almost daily the effects of climate change become more evident and we face a

catastrophic loss of biodiversity. Local NGOs have a major role to play in helping our communities to be more sustainable and cohesive. I believe that PECT has a massive part to play in joining up these challenges in Peterborough and beyond.

“I am excited and honoured to become chair of PECT at this important time, mindful that the previous chair Steve Magenis leaves big shoes to fill. I would like to thank him for the fantastic dedication and support he has shown PECT over the years. His hard work has had a far-reaching and long-lasting impact.”
