The waiting is nearly over, the big day is fast approaching... yes Whittlesey Festival is almost here!

This year’s event is being held on Sunday, September 8th when the town’s streets are sure to be packed with men, women and children all ready to enjoy a great day out.

The organisers have once again worked hard to put together a great selection of rides, stalls and attractions at the festival which kicks off as usual with the grand parade through the town centre.

Many of the rides and attractions are free this year and this is made possible by the event’s sponsors so please go along and give them your support.

Let’s hope the weather will be kind on the big day so that as many locals – and visitors – as possible join together to enjoy the annual extravaganza.

You will find further details of this year’s festival in this issue of Discovering Whittlesea on page 24.

Summer is still hanging around, but only just, and I hope your break has proved refreshing and energising.

September signals the return to school for many and the shortening of days for all. Blackberries and sloes are ripening and some shops are already stocking their “must-haves” for Christmas, over three months away!

Our team of contributors have all returned from their various summer destinations, all ready, willing and able to “inform, educate and entertain” you, our readers, (to borrow Lord Reith’s mission statement for his beloved BBC.) For us mums (and dads) with our teenagers now having received their GCSE and A-Level results, we can step back and see just what fantastic human beings they actually are, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. They have done their very best, taken the advice offered by their teachers and us, formulated future plans, and are developing into responsible adults. Phew!

It’s all change at the Ivy Leaf...

W

hittlesey’s Ivy Leaf Club has a new look committee with a new chairman who is determined to make it an even more attractive local venue.

Mark Smith, who took over the chair in May, said: “I’m Whittlesey born and bred and came here as a youngster. I’ve family ties to the club as my mum worked behind the bar and my grandfather was on the door and I’m determined to create the right atmosphere so that everyone who uses the club feels comfortable and feels it is a nice, pleasant and enjoyable place to visit.

Mark and his committee want to add to these events as well as making the club the ideal venue to hire – for dances, parties, charity events, weddings and other functions.

The club recently obtained a 5-star food hygiene rating and is currently looking at putting together a new food menu.

Mark added: “Myself and the committee want the Ivy Leaf to be at the heart of the community and to be the kind of place that people look forward to visiting.”

“There are some new faces on the committee and as well as me being voted chairman there is a new vice chairman. As a committee, we will be doing everything we can to make the club attractive to our members and the local community.

“We are carrying out some much-needed improvements to the facilities and refurbishing the dance area and toilets and doing some rewiring work and decorating to make the club more appealing for people to use.”

Mark said that the club has around 800 members of all ages, from 18 to 80, and has already received approximately 100 new membership applications.

The Ivy Leaf, located at 1 Gracious Street, has some impressive facilities including two snooker tables and a pool table and regularly holds pastimes including poker, bingo, karaoke and dominoes.

Recipe

SLOW COOKED STICKY RIBS Serve these up with whatever you fancy; rice works well, or coleslaw and a crisp salad but then so will chips... how will you eat yours?

Oh and don’t forget the napkins!

Method

Ingredients Serves 4 1.5kg meaty pork ribs 1 bottle of barbecue sauce (approx 350g) 2 pork stock cubes 2 bay leaves 1 tsp of coriander seeds 1 tsp of mustard seeds 1 tsp of peppercorns

• Put four tablespoons of barbecue sauce along with the rest of the ingredients into your slow cooker.

• Top up with enough water to cover (roughly 1.5 litres) and give it all a gentle mix.

• Slow cook on Low for eight-nine hours hours until very tender but not completely falling off the bone.

• Heat the oven to 220˚C/200˚C fan/gas mark 7.

Remove the ribs from the slow cooker using a slotted spoon or tongs. Handle them carefully as the meat will be very tender and may start to fall off.

• Baste with the remaining barbecue sauce and lay on a foil-lined oven tray. Cook for 20-30 minutes until they start to crisp on the outside.

• Tuck in!

Local residents board Slimming World’s Golden Bus! Excited residents from Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire turned out in force on Saturday 17th August when Slimming World’s 50th Birthday Golden Bus paid a visit to Peterborough’s Cathedral Square.

The golden double decker, which is touring the UK and Ireland to celebrate and share Slimming World’s 50th anniversary year, is set to visit 59 towns and cities between July and September – and members of the public stepped aboard most recently to enjoy everything it had to offer.

As part of the events, guests were invited to watch live cookery demonstrations and sample some of Slimming World’s famous recipes. Onboard chefs served healthy dishes cooked from scratch including Sunshine Salad, Easy Chicken Curry, Spaghetti Bolognese, and Vegetable Paella in their specially created kitchen. Anyone who stopped by, could also pick up a goody bag and a selection of recipe cards so they could try out the dishes for themselves at home.

Also on board the bus were some of the inspirational local slimmers whose lives have changed since joining Slimming World and losing weight.

How Could Acupuncture Help You? Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms.

As one of the safest medical treatments, both conventional and complementary, on offer in the UK, many people use acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions. Others choose acupuncture as a preventive measure, to strengthen their constitution, or because they just feel generally unwell.

A growing body of evidence-based clinical research shows that traditional acupuncture safely treats a wide range of common health problems, including anxiety, arthritis, back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, sports injuries and much more.

Acupuncture is considered suitable for all ages, including babies, children and the elderly. It can be very effective when integrated with conventional medicine.

During your first visit, your acupuncturist needs to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health and lifestyle.

This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history, as well as such

things as your sleeping pattern, your appetite and digestion, and your emotional wellbeing. Based on all the information you have given, the practitioner will make a diagnosis and put together your treatment plan, which may include lifestyle and dietary advice as well as acupuncture.

The acupuncture needles are very much finer than the needles used for injections and blood tests. You may not even feel them penetrate the skin and, once in place, they are hardly noticeable. Most people find acupuncture relaxing and often feel very calm after a treatment.

A lot of people have acupuncture to relieve specific aches and pains, such as osteoarthritis of the knee, TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder), headaches and low back pain, or for common health problems like an overactive bladder. Other people choose acupuncture when they can feel their bodily functions are out of balance, but they have no obvious diagnosis. We have daytime, evening and Saturday appointments available.

Everyone Health – Delivering NHS Health Checks in Your Community What is an NHS Health Check?

T

he NHS Health Check is a national programme offering a health check-up every five years to adults in England aged 40 to 74 without a pre-existing cardiovascular condition. One of the largest prevention programmes of its type in the world, it is designed to help prevent and detect early signs of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia.

As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower the risk.

If you are in the 40-74 age group without a preexisting condition, you should have an NHS Health Check every five years.

Everyone Health delivers these important checks in local community clinics across Cambridgeshire, you will find us in libraries, community centres, at local events, church halls, pop-up shops in town centres – we also deliver in workplaces.

The check takes about 20-30 minutes. You will meet with a trained professional who will check your blood pressure and cholesterol, they will record your height, weight, age, gender and ethnicity. You’ll also be asked some simple questions about your family history and choices that may put your health at risk.

Once you’ve had your NHS Health Check, your results will be discussed with you and you’ll be given personalised advice on how to maintain or improve your health which will help you lower your risk of developing any of the conditions screened for.

Andy H, who had an NHS Health Check at our Pop-up Shop in Huntingdon earlier this year, was informed his cholesterol was high and would need to visit his GP for discussion and medical advice about how this could affect him. Andy also took advice away with him from the Everyone Health practitioner about changes he could implement in the meantime to improve his health & lifestyle.

Y

ou've seen the notices in Discovering Whittlesea, and the stickers in shop windows promoting the Whittlesey and District Business Forum, but what do they do?

Well, they talk... about matters that concern local companies of course, but a lot more besides. It can be quite a lonely experience running a small business working alone all day, or maybe with just your partner or perhaps one member of staff.

You may only see the proprietor of the business next door for a couple of minutes when you are opening up each day, so it is invaluable to be able to meet up with other business people on a regular basis, to chat and exchange gossip and experiences.

There have been business groups previously, but they tended to be little more than a social club for a small number of 'important' local people. The Forum in its present form is in its fourth year and, under the dynamic chairmanship of Joe Jennings, is a forward thinking, outward looking organisation that is committed to do whatever it can to promote Whittlesey as a good place to live, work, and yes – shop.

The membership includes not only shops, but restaurants, licensed premises, professionals, sole traders who are not retailers, and is open to any business person in the area. New members are welcome, because no matter what they may do, they will be able to contribute their own individual and unique experience and help to make the town a better place.

The Forum has town councillors as members and is consulted by the town council on occasions and also has lines of communication with the district council and other regulatory bodies. It is the envy of other Fenland towns that do not have a similar business group.

The benefits of shopping locally can easily be overlooked. Not only does it save travelling, but the local independent business can offer knowledge, help and simple good service that cannot always be found at national outlets. Shoppers can benefit from years of experience, someone who really knows their products and cares about what they are selling. As Joe says, “Where else can you buy a tarantula and a 12-inch album – and the Post Office is open on Sundays?”

Matters WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL… COMING SOON! The Whittlesey Festival on Sunday, September 8th will very soon be here. There’ll be excitement, music and laughter in the air, starting off with the Parade at 10am from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street.

Festival organisers encourage you all to arrive in good time to line Broad Street, Market Street and the Square and they will be handing out flags for you to wave and cheer as the parade goes by.

SAM’S GREEK ODYSSEY Whittlesey-based entrepreneur Sam Hammond Donald has just returned from an all-expenses paid cruise around the Greek Islands. She earned the trip as a reward for her exceptional work as a self-employed demonstrator for global craft company Stampin’ Up! During the seven-night cruise, Sam got the chance to visit Santorini, Athens, Mykonos and Katakolon, as well as starting and ending the tour in the Italian capital Rome.

To earn this trip, Sam had to show exceptional achievement in sales and team development. The crafts entrepreneur became a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator in 2013 and produces five papercraft video tutorials each week on her YouTube channel and seven craft posts a week on her blog.

Sam said: “The Greek Islands hold a special place in my heart and experiencing them from a luxury cruise is such a privilege and an amazing reward for a lot of hard work all year.”

Your Garden

SEPTEMBER Gardening Tips Hopefully, August was a month of plenty for you and September should also bring forth a good harvest: a reward for all of the hard work in spring and early summer.

As autumn approaches, early crops such as French and runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes and sweetcorn will be coming to an end. However, now is the time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days: they have completely the opposite storage conditions. Onions should be kept in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed. On the other hand, potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting. Store them in hessian or paper sacks and check from time-to-time. Also make sure to dry them out well before storing.

Even though the winter months are approaching there are several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring. September is a good time to start sowing and planting the following crops; • Winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose).

• Spring greens –seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October.

• Spinach.

• Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves.

• Onion sets and garlic.

• Planting broad beans in the autumn is a good way to avoid blackfly as they crop earlier.

Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread diseases. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures.” Field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia are just a few examples. These green manures perform three main functions; • They provide compost material.

• They help prevent weed growth.

• They soak up nutrients that would normally be washed away by winter rains.

• If you have a light soil, they can be left in overwinter but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

A few jobs that need doing this month include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms(1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over - cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

A Word From...

Mayor James Palmer: Unlocking Whittlesey’s Full Growth Potential In my job as Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, my passion is to see growth spread across the region. That means connecting our rural areas, such as Whittlesey, with our great international cities of Cambridge and Peterborough – and everywhere else in between.

A large part of that includes seeing change come to the transport links across the whole area. Planning with a long-term vision, I have commissioned a Local Transport Plan which lays out our ambitious strategy for a world class transport system. My vision is to revitalise transport in Cambridgeshire in a way that works for us, but to the same level of professionalism as London. To help our planning process, we are currently running a consultation which invites you who live in the area to have your say. This way, we can better ensure that the needs of local people are met as effectively and efficiently as possible.

But need I even ask? The obvious transport task that needs tackling is the introduction of hourly trains. Along with North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay, I have been pressing for a commitment from the rail operator to work with us to meet our ambitions for better services. This has been a long-held desire for people, as well as their elected representatives in Fenland, and it is high time we move things along because enough is enough. I have fought tooth and nail with CrossCountry trains to see this shocking lack of connectivity changed. Unfortunately, their answer remains the same, which is that it will be reviewed

in 2022. Whittlesey does not deserve to be held back by CrossCountry’s blatant bureaucracy.

To see further revitalisation, the Combined Authority has commissioned several market town Masterplans, of which Whittlesey is included. The Whittlesey Masterplan will create an evidencebased ambition and action plan that clearly articulates the needs of the local area from new job opportunities and education and skills provision through to community facilities and local attractions.

The Combined Authority has seen power and budgets pass from Westminster to Cambridgeshire, and these plans will help ensure this flows further into our rural market towns. I believe that this Masterplan, coupled with the Local Transport Plan, is the key to unlocking Whittlesey’s full growth potential, so I hope that local businesses and residents will come up with bold ambitions for the future growth of this historic town.

Be Armed With the Right Information in the Battle Against the Scammers

by Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades It seems that not a week goes by lately without warning of a new scam – with cyber criminals becoming more and more sophisticated. An e-mail from a supposed legal or Government source can be so convincing that it can fool even the shrewdest among us, as can a request to transfer money or pay a bill.

However, the fight against scams is hotting up. As well as the many reliable channels which can inform and advise about scams (including the UK Action Fraud), there is also a user-friendly Friends Against Scams website, (a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to ‘Take a Stand Against Scams.’)

Friends Against Scams is designed to inspire action, highlight the scale of the problem, change the perceptions of why people fall for scams, and make scams a community, regional and national topic.

And what’s more, Friends Against Scams offers a free, easy-to-use online learning service where anyone can learn about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim.

The session – which takes around fifteen minutes to complete – can be done in the comfort of your own home, in the workplace or even on your phone while on the move. Don’t be caught out by things like: • Phishing – this will most likely be an e-mail from the ‘bank’ designed to trick victims into revealing personal information and passwords.

• Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g. your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data.

• Pharming - the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one • Romance Scams - a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money.

• Impersonation of UK officials - criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment.

• Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information.

In the past, a piece so entitled would have been aimed at a niche market – those early adopters, possibly higher risk takers and those of a certain disposition towards nature and other aspects of modern life.

Things have changed in recent years, more of us have become aware of our environment, that money has power and influence and to be ‘seen to be doing the right thing’ is important.

An example of a fund currently available includes designing a fund that focuses on four key areas: 1 Sustainable transport 2 Sustainable energy 3 Responsible nutrition 4 Recycling and waste reduction A fund manager will not get carried away with sentiment, they have a job to do, they are looking to invest in companies capable of longterm growth, a clear demand for their cleaner solutions. Technology and consumer demand are changing quickly. The shift to electric vehicles may bring forward demand in the short term, but in the longer term an improvement in sustainable supply chain, companies embracing this have significant growth potential.

Previously this would have involved smaller entrepreneurial firms that may not have been listed in conventional investment indices (e.g. the Alternative Investment Market). This would have carried the potentially greater risk of failure, and those firms tend to have limited cash flow, another quality that an investment manager will be looking for.

This indicates that larger companies are becoming more aware of the opportunities, they tend to have better cash flow and longer-term aspirations which can be attractive to investors.

It is thought that once the first set of criteria has filtered out those companies that do not comply with what the fund manager considers to be investment worthy – the choice is about 600, this is whittled away by additional filters, for example ‘up to 15 percent small caps, 50% mid-caps. There is a huge amount of innovation in unlisted companies – but the overall balance may result in a portfolio of about 50 companies.

Owning a Property Jointly: What do I need to Know?

With the cost of property rising at a faster rate than incomes, many people are choosing to buy a house together in order to help them on to the property ladder. When two or more people co-own property they can either be joint tenants or tenants in common. These terms are a little old-fashioned because they come from an act that was passed nearly 100 years ago.

Although a lot has changed since The Law of Property Act 1925, the concept of establishing different ways of owning a home is still very useful today, perhaps even more so than it was then.

So, what are the differences?

Joint Tenancy If nobody requests the alternative, a joint tenancy is the legal default position. Under a joint tenancy, the property can’t be divided up and all owners have equal rights to the property. If one party wants out, the other owners have no choice but to agree and must either sell the property or buy the co-owner out. If one owner dies, the other owners will retain equal ownership of the entire property. If there were two joint tenants, the other will become the sole owner. A married or cohabiting couple are likely to be joint tenants of a property.

Tenancy in Common Here each owner has a separate share of the property and can do with it as they wish. By default, ownership is split equally but if the parties have agreed a different ratio, that will apply. As with a joint tenancy, if one party wants out, the others must allow them to sell their share or buy them out themselves. If one owner dies, their share is distributed as set out in their will (or according to intestacy rules if they have not made a will).

Friends or business partners buying a property as an investment will very likely be tenants in common.

Changing Types of Ownership It is possible to change from joint tenants to tenants in common or vice versa by applying to the Land Registry. It is also possible to change from sole ownership to either joint tenancy or tenancy in common, this is called transferring ownership.

How Many People Can Own a Property?

No more than four people can be legal owners of a property. However, through use of a trust, it is possible to have any number of owners. In this circumstance, the legal owners hold the property as trustees on behalf of the additional owners who are beneficiaries of the trust. In this circumstance it is possible for both trustees and beneficiaries to be true owners of the property. A trust would be necessary in the case of inheritance, where more than four people stand to inherit a share of the property.

What is Neutering?

by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre Neutering applies to both males and females to describe the surgical procedure to prevent pets from reproducing. In males the procedure is called ‘castration’ and in females it is called ‘spaying’.

• Male dogs can be neutered from six months of age.

• A female dog may come into season anytime from six to 18 months and can be neutered before their first season, if however, they have had a season, they will need to wait three months after their last season before they can have the surgery.

• Both male and female cats can be neutered from four months of age or need to weigh 1kg or more.

• Both male and female rabbits can be neutered from around four months of age.

What are the benefits of having my pet neutered?

There are many pets across the UK who need a home. Neutering can help avoid the accidental matings that occur, hence not adding to the number already needing homes.

Spaying can prevent or decrease the risk of: • Vaginal hyperplasia.

• Mammary cancer, if neutered before their first season the incidence of mammary tumours is reduced to less than 0.5 percent. This benefit decreases with each season until after the third season where there is no reduction in risk.

• Womb infection (pyometra) – Un-neutered females more than 10 years old have a 25% chance of developing a life-threatening womb infection.

• Pregnancy and birth do come with some risks and should not be taken lightly.

When in heat, female dogs will drip blood-tinged discharge for three weeks or more, they will also be attractive to male dogs which can elicit unwanted attention.

Some entire female dogs will have a false pregnancy after their season and although this is natural, it can cause behavioural and even medical problems.

If your dog becomes pregnant you have the responsibility and costs of caring for her during pregnancy, birth and rearing her puppies, plus any potential complications that may occur.

Female cats will ‘call’ (come into season) regularly, about every three weeks during spring/summer.

Entire female cats will attract entire males and can lead to unwanted spraying and fighting.

Castration can prevent or decrease the risk of: * Testicular cancer and torsion.

• Diseases promoted by the hormone testosterone, including perianal tumours and perineal hernias.

Castration is always advised when the testicles are retained in the abdomen because the risk of testicular tumours is greatly increased.

Surgery may decrease the chance of testosterone driven behaviours, such as marking, humping, but it’s not guaranteed.

With male cats it can help to reduce fighting, hence a reduction in infected wounds, abscesses and the spread of FIV and FeLV infection. It may also help reduce roaming cats being injured or killed on the roads.

There can also be reasons not to neuter your pet.

However, we feel the benefits of neutering outweigh the reasons not to. We are happy to discuss the benefits of neutering during a consultation and what is best for your individual pet.

What about weight gain?

Weight gain is often associated as a side-effect of neutering. However, with the correct diet and appropriate exercise, weight gain should not be an issue.

SEPTEMBER UPDATES AND NEWS...

– By Steve Barclay MP Local schools benefit from the latest phonics teaching techniques One of the key benefits of securing one of 12 places in the Department of Education’s flagship Opportunity Area Programme was that local schools could benefit from the latest teaching techniques.

Last month 23 representatives from schools across the Opportunity Area visited the New Wave English Hub in Hackney for a Phonics Showcase event. The day included a learning walk of a phonics intervention in practice and informative sessions on ‘Reading for Pleasure’ and ‘Vocabulary in the EYFS’. Attendees saw phonics teaching across several year groups by teachers and teaching assistants. The visit, coupled with optional one-to-one consultation, will enable schools to improve their provision of phonics ensuring that children locally get the best educational start. Schools in Fenland found the event ‘very inspiring’. £27m rail scheme starts in October to double carriages on King’s Lynn to Cambridge line Network Rail has confirmed that its £27 million scheme of upgrades to platforms and longer eight carriage trains will start this autumn.

The work includes extending a station platform at Littleport to accommodate the trains with eight carriages rather than four, and step-free access to Littleport station. The work should be complete in the summer of 2020 and new timetables will be published as of December 2020 which will be followed by the new eight-car services.

This is great news for constituents as trains currently get very busy at key times. It reflects

my continued push to get investment into local transport improvements and will make a major difference to the Cambridge to King’s Lynn line.

Work on Wisbech Rail is also continuing with consultants now working on the £3m engineering study to inform the next steps.

I met with them recently and continue to make the case for this within government.

Village Survival Guide Last year more than 500 community led projects were recommended to The Prince's Countryside Fund as a result of their Recharging Rural research. They have now published the best examples from this in The Village Survival Guide based on the experience of rural residents from all across the UK. It has a number of interesting ideas which may be of interest, which can be found at http://ow.ly/ Y7xh50viBbg Queen Elizabeth Hospital receives share of extra £69.7 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King’s Lynn has received confirmation that it will be sharing an extra £69.7 million announced by the Department of Health, assigned to Norfolk’s three acute hospitals.

The money for the QEH will be for a diagnostic and assessment centre that will aid the rapid diagnosis and assessment of cancerous and non-cancerous diseases. This will be of great benefit to people facing waiting lists for their health updates. It is another step forward in ensuring we have an NHS fit for the future.

Suddenly it's September!

This Month: The Whittlesey Festival

here has the year gone? All too soon the annual Whittlesey Festival is upon us again following months of planning and careful scheduling using spread sheets, photo shopped artwork, favour calling, fund raising events, countless phone calls, emails and arm twisting.

To many of the people attending this outdoor event it is a spectacle for one day after which they return to the normality of town life. But come 6pm on September 8th a sigh of relief can be heard from the performers, stewards, first-aiders and the army of volunteers for a job hopefully well done on almost a military scale as the last stalls and tables are packed onto the convoy of trailers.

The programme guide is available from many shops around the town and additional copies will be available from the Market Square on the day. The performers on the Square and inside St Mary’s Church and outside on the churchyard stage will be displayed on large boards both on the Square near the sound desk and at St Mary’s on the railings. Any changes will be made to the boards should it become necessary. Hopefully we will be able to keep to the published times as in the programme. For most of the festival committee, and this applies to any local event where safety and customer experience is key, it also signals the start of a review process which looks at all aspects of the event from initial planning, which starts as soon as the last gazebo is packed away, right up to the scheduled start time the following year.

It focuses on every aspect from signage and stall positioning, placement and suitability of exhibits, audience levels for each performance and attractions. There is also the impact of programme and artist changes, sometimes minutes before they are due to perform, along with the problems of 58

Using the collation of feedback from the attendees and views from the performers, planned changes and improvements for future events can be assessed. The aim is always to improve the audience’s experience and feedback is always useful in shaping next year’s event.

Once again, this year we are privileged to have the local ‘Young Technicians’ managing the churchyard stage, an organisation that provides comprehensive training programmes aimed at 11-19-year olds, all centred around the live events industry.

Victoria Potter, community fundraiser, said: “At Sue Ryder, we strongly believe that every one of us has the right to die as they wish. We do everything we can to take the fear out of dying.

“We have cared for 50 patients from the Whittlesey area over the past two years, many of whom have benefitted from our Hospice at Home service. Our care is offered free of charge but costs us £9000 a day. To raise the shortfall, we must rely on the support of the local community.”

Whittlesey Manor Bowls Club

W

hittlesey Manor Bowls Club is a member of the Whittlesey Sports Association and has been part of the town’s sporting community for almost sixty years.

From humble beginnings back in the early 1960s, when the changing facilities were a glorified council shed, it has evolved to a position today where it can boast some of the best bowling facilities in the area.

A brick-built clubhouse, financed by the club and its members, was constructed in the early 1980s and then extended in 2002 to include a new bar and fully-fitted kitchen and provide room to accommodate up to eighty people.

Therefore, apart from hosting internal social events, it is also ideal for small private family gatherings, such as christenings, wakes and special birthday celebrations.

It is also affiliated to Bowls England, via Huntingdonshire Bowls, the Northants Bowling Federation and the Northants Women’s Bowling Federation, thus providing players with the opportunity to play in county competitions and challenge for national titles.

The club also runs a number of internal competitions throughout the season, so all bowlers, whatever their ambition or ability, are well catered for.

Apart from the sporting aspect during the summer, where it provides bowling for people of all ages and abilities, it has developed into a kind of minicommunity centre, with three local women’s craft groups now hiring the premises during the day.

New members are welcome at any time during the season – late April through to mid-September – and they can obtain a free introduction to the sport, with bowls provided, as long as they bring along a pair of flat-soled shoes.

The club operates a total of five teams in the Peterborough Bowls League, three in the midweek league, one in the Tuesday afternoon senior competition and one on Saturday afternoons.

COATES W.I’S KUSADAMA CLASS Coates W.I’s August meeting was a very enjoyable talk from Caroline Barnes on the history of and her travels around China, and featured a number of exhibits she collected.

September’s meeting is Kusadama Flower Making and the competition is silk while October’s meeting is Time Travel Through Early Wisbech and the competition will be lace.

Guests and new members are always welcome.

WHITTLESEY SOCIETY TO WELCOME NEW MEMBERS The Whittlesey Society meets at Whittlesey Town Hall, Market Street on the second Monday of each month at 7.30pm and welcomes new members.

The group was started around 1974 with the aim of taking an interest in the town and the conservation of buildings and the area in general.

Members discuss any relevant planning issues and local events.

Over the years, members have started the Whittlesey Museum, and were greatly involved in the Straw Bear festival. An archaeology group enjoyed taking part in some organised ‘digs’ and now some members have started The Mud Walls Group which has recorded the town’s important mud walls and aims to promote their importance to the town.

The monthly talks are varied but generally have a local history theme.

If you are interested in the town and enjoy learning about the area you would be made most welcome. Just turn up or contact Maureen Watson on 01733 203767.

At the next meeting on Monday, September 9th Maureen James will give a talk on ‘A History of Fairy Belief’.

WHITTLESEY BAPTIST CHURCH 250TH ANNIVERSARY FUN DAY Whittlesey Baptist Church on Gracious Street was officially founded in the year 1769, 250 years ago.

To celebrate God's goodness in bringing us to this significant anniversary the church has put on various events, the most recent being the Family Fun Day on Saturday, July 20th.

The day dawned bright and sunny, despite weather predictions, to the relief of us all (we had to reschedule from June 8th because of storms!). The slight breeze played havoc with some of the balloons, but other than that, the weather was good and so at 11am the Mayor of Whittlesey arrived to cut the ribbon, letting in the fifty or so people gathered at the gates.

Attractions on the day included a free BBQ, with meat supplied by J. Jones butchers, Hook a Duck, a Coconut Shy, other fete games like Tin Can Alley and most importantly for the children, an adult sized Bouncy Castle, which was busy all day! In the back hall of the church was a pop-up museum on the history of the church over the last quarter of a millennium, full of information compiled from many sources. Various interesting artefacts were on display, such as the original trust deeds for the

church and an old pedal organ. There was lots to do for all ages, including the winning of both small and large prizes and the Treasure Hunt gave a fun way to have a tour of the church premises.

At 2pm, the Mayor returned to award certificates to the children who had won the prizes in the anniversary drawing and poetry competitions based around imagining what Whittlesey was like 250 years ago.

The day was a huge success with hundreds of people having come through the gates to join in the celebrations.

Why Should We Believe?

Our beliefs or absence of them, whether directed towards God or not, will determine what we get out of life. The Bible makes some very powerful statements concerning the need for, and the power of, belief.

A psychiatrist at the University of Leeds conducted an experiment to discover whether people who believe in ‘Monday blues’ were more likely to feel bad on Monday. One group received a report supporting the reality of Monday morning blues.

A second group received a report denying its existence. The third group received nothing to read.

At the end of the experiment it was found that those whose report supported the truth of Monday blues became more susceptible to experiencing Monday as the worst day in the week. The result of this research concluded that what people believe

will ultimately set the scene for what they expect to experience.

Having to leave school at 14 in order to earn a wage and help the family finances I came to believe my life had no real value. Subsequently, this left me with a strong insecurity complex which no amount of anger could take away. Not even the success of rising to become manager of a department overseeing a team of 12 could take it away.

It wasn’t until I discovered a real belief in Jesus Christ and became involved in church life that I slowly began to think differently and more positively about myself. Since then belief has played a major part in turning my life around for the better. I have personally proved God’s Word, ‘if you can believe, all things are possible’.

Introducing a New Member of Our Team...

AA Whittlesey Computers Ltd has recently had another bright young mind join, and you may have seen him in the shop or heard him on the phone and this month he is writing this article.

H

i, I’m Liam. My specialty is phone repairs, and general computer maintenance. I am currently learning motherboard repairs which AA Whittlesey Computers undertakes in-house and is a very difficult process. I originally got into computer repairs in my early teens as I found the subject intriguing and fun. You will find me in the shop from Tuesday to Saturday alongside Oliver, but not Sundays. Be there or be a cracked phone screen, am I right? No one wants one of those!

So, come on in and let me repair it for you!

As I specialise in phone repairs, AA Whittlesey Computers is now doing any/all jobs relating to phones and tablets again. So, if you have a broken phone or tablet laying around that is just gathering dust, bring it in and I will look at it for you.

Running a computer like this can be very bad for the hardware inside and needs to be looked at as soon as possible. I know this has been mentioned before but in the few weeks since joining AA Whittlesey Computers I have seen 11 burned out laptops which, for a modest repair cost, would still be working now!

Also, now that I have joined, we are able to offer computer lessons six days a week, although you

are requested to phone and check availability beforehand.

Finally, and ending on a very serious note, this month we have seen two incidents where we have been requested to unlock iPhones because a loved one has sadly passed and left a password on their device. We know this can be hard times for families and loved ones. Even more so if you cannot notify friends/work colleagues of their passing, or even have photos to remember them. The reason we’re writing this segment is because we think it’s important for loved ones to be able to access these things in case of either an emergency or following an incident such as this. To that end we suggest you keep a paper copy of all email addresses, passwords, lock screen passwords and other vital details. It really is incredibly difficult to get Apple to release this information; albeit the company is very, very helpful. But why not help prevent this hassle for your loved ones in the first place?

Matters YOUR MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Hello, I do hope you have all had a lovely summer and enjoyed your holidays. As we move from summer into the autumn, that means the Whittlesey Festival will soon be upon us for another year.

The festival, which takes place on Sunday, September 8th, is now one of the major days in the town’s calendar. Brian Smithyman and his festival organising committee every year put in much hard work and planning to make this a fantastic day for all residents and visitors. A big thank you to Brian and his team for organising this marvellous showpiece for the town, and I am very much looking forward to officially opening the event again. Hope to see you all there.

I am also pleased to announce that the official opening of Peel House, the new town council offices in Queen Street will take place on Sunday, September 29th at 3pm by His Honour Neil McKittrick DL, High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire.

The day before, on the Saturday between 10am12noon Whittlesey Town Council will be hosting a preview of the new offices and new council chamber for all residents to have a look around.

I would like to say a big thank you to Cllr. David Mason, chairman of the property working group, and his team for all their sterling work to bring this important project to fruition.

WAITING ROOM ON TRACK Whittlesea railway station is on track for new platform waiting shelters and passengers have been given a lead role in what they’ll look like.

Fenland District Council and the Hereward Community Rail Partnership are working with Greater Anglia to install the new shelters by autumn 2019.

The shelters are part of an ongoing programme of improvements to Whittlesea, March and Manea stations, with support and £9 million of funding from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority.

Passengers were invited to choose which type of shelter is installed by voting for their favourite from three shortlisted designs. They included a modern shelter crafted from durable, renewable wood and anti-vandal styles made from stainless steel.

Two new waiting shelters will be installed at Whittlesea station, with one on each of the Peterborough and Ely-bound platforms.

Improvements already carried out through the Railway Station Masterplans programme have included new solar-powered LED lighting at Whittlesea and there are also plans to lengthen the platforms at the station.

Before the schools broke up for summer holidays my husband Robert and I, had the pleasure of visiting all four local primary schools. We had been asked by Steve Barclay MP to deliver the summer reading books as part of his ‘Read to Succeed’ campaign. We were delighted to present the books as part of this important initiative to the Year 4 and 5 pupils at all the schools. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting many of the pupils who were excited to read the fantastic selection of amazing children’s books included in this year’s campaign. This is an extremely valuable campaign organised by Steve Barclay and I and Whittlesey Town Council are very happy to support it.
