Introduction

Welcome to Your June Issue.

When I was young, I was always quite a sporty person. I enjoyed playing all types of sport; football, cricket, rugby, athletics, tennis, you name it I liked playing it.

As I got a bit older, I started to take up running. Every other day I would do six miles. I really enjoyed it. Stomping along on my own in my own world. Then something terrible happened. I got bored.

Bored with the routine of running and annoyed with the fact that after peaking at around 40 minutes for the six miles I was never going to get any faster.

It was then that the new Andy took over. It was actually really enjoyable to put my feet up or go out with my mates to have a drink (and fag) instead of pounding the streets.

Now that has also changed... I just love walking, with or without the family dog. And as for football, cricket, rugby, athletics and tennis? Well you can usually watch it on the TV...

The great British weather has been showing its true colours in recent weeks. One minute sunshine, the next rain. The unpredictability is... well predictable!

The Fatherʼs Day Interview with Jim Saunders Father-of-two Jim Saunders is well known in the Whittlesey area and is the current president of the town’s Rotary Club who helped organise the recent Whittlesey Rotary Charity Beer Festival. A former Chair of Governors of New Road Primary School, he moved to the town twenty years ago when he set up a local branch of Hugh Crane (Cleaning Equipment) Ltd which he manages.

Jim, who grew up in West Drayton, is married to Sandra, and has two daughters, Megan (23) and Rhianne (21), who were educated in Whittlesey before attending Lincoln and Sheffield Universities respectively.

What was the most important advice your father gave you?

Don’t get caught!! Only joking, his advice was that if you worked as hard as you can you will always be rewarded well and recognised for it. I found that it was not always that simple, as you also needed a bit of luck, but that is something you can also make yourself.

What key advice do you feel you have given your own children?

Believe in your own ability and never give up. If you fail in a task or get something wrong, learn from it and try again.

Whilst growing up what challenges did you pose for your father?

Being an engineer at heart, I was always fascinated as to how everyday items worked. I was always dismantling bicycles, small electrical appliances, eventually moving up to washing machines and even old television sets.

What are the biggest challenges youʼre facing or will face with your own child/children?

They are both nearing the end of their university education and it is time for them to venture into the world. I find it important to support them as much as I can in whatever direction they wish to go and encourage them to always give their best efforts.

Would you like to see your own child/children follow in your footsteps?

We have always told our girls that the world is their oyster and to look further afield than where they grew up. To follow their dreams and to grasp opportunities and experiences with both hands, and most importantly to have no regrets.

How To Overcome Irrational, Emotional, Negative Thinking Patterns It is the fundamental things in life which are paramount to our true happiness; the warmth of the sun, fresh air, good harmony, good food, strong energy from those around us. When it boils down to it, these are the things that are healthy to our well-being – most of the other things that concern us are really not important, if we had only tomorrow to live, the little things will become the most important things for us to fill those precious moments with.

Experts estimate that the mind thinks between 60,000-80,000 thoughts a day. That is an average of 2500-3300 thoughts per hour. The majority of the time these thoughts are fleeting and flitter in and out of our consciousness without a ‘second thought’. Our minds are able to filter our thoughts so that only those important ones are actually retained by us.

Negative thinking patterns, however, where these thoughts become distorted and the potential outcomes can be catastrophised can repeatedly damage our mental well-being. They can make us feel anxious, depressed or develop conditions such as OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and other mental and physical health problems.

The events and situations that people encounter throughout life are only one piece of the puzzle.

In order to understand the impact of such events, I believe it is also essential to look at the beliefs people hold about these experiences as well as the emotions that arise as a result of those beliefs: The most common irrational beliefs include: • The feeling that a person has no control over their own happiness, and that this is totally reliant on external environment or other people; • The belief that they must be 100 percent successful and efficient at all that they do to be able to feel valued and worthwhile;

• The feelings that avoiding life’s difficulties or challenges will make them feel happier; • Being ultra-sensitive to other people’s errors or misconduct and taking responsibility for the results.

By using short term therapy such as CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) I hope to help my clients overcome irrational, emotional, negative thinking patterns in order to overcome psychological problems and mental distress. CBT is a talking therapy that can help my clients to manage their problems by changing the way that they think and behave. It looks at how their thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect the way that they feel and behave. We look at ways to change how they feel and respond to situations. This process looks at the here and now and enables them to change their approach and behaviour moving forward.

The nature of CBT and the practice of ‘goal setting’ allows my clients to continue their own therapy outside of our therapy sessions. So, we discuss homework tasks that allow them to feel involved in their own recovery and able to take control of the outcomes.

These homework tasks range from reading self-help material to conducting behavioural experiments by monitoring their actions and outcomes. I encourage my clients to recognise and have a clear understanding of the direction of the therapy and what they can achieve. CBT is a very structured therapy which requires collaboration between you as the client and me as the therapist so that only those important ones are actually retained by us.

• We also screen 100 young people each year which costs £5000.

• This year we will also be training all Key Stage 2 children (7-11yrs) in first aid and providing them with a first aid book/magazine.

• We respond to all of our community groups and provide training or awareness whenever asked.

WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL – YOUR CHANCE TO GET INVOLVED

Plans for The Whittlesey Festival on Sunday, September 8th are well under way and organisers are busy planning for the big day.

The festival, being held from 10am-4pm, is now in its 12th year and gets bigger and better each time which means the challenge to the committee members is to deliver an event that builds on previous years, to make it a memorable day out for people of all ages.

There is a full programme of music, entertainment, dance, stalls, attractions, classic cars and much more, which takes place on the Market Square, Broad Street and The Church Yard Green so there is something to suit everyone. Back by popular demand this year will be the land train, which you can catch near to Heron Foods in High Causeway.

Why not take the weight off your feet and let it transport you to the other end of the Causeway for you to enjoy the rest of the festival?

The festival starts off with a parade from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street at approximately 10am and winds its way through Market Street, High Causeway, Blunts Lane, Grosvenor Road coming back to the Market Square ready for the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey.

There is always a vibrant carnival atmosphere with cheering crowds lining the parade route. If you would like your community group to take part then please contact the organisers.

Volunteers are always needed to help with stewarding on the day so if you are over 16 years of age (with parent or carer’s permission if applicable) the organisers urge you to get in touch.

AUGUST DEADLINE FOR GRANTS Cambridgeshire Community Foundation is a charity which provides grants to community/voluntary organisations across Cambridgeshire.

It runs the Burnthouse Farm Wind Farm Community Fund, which offers grants between £250-£6000 to organisations who are planning to undertake charitable projects in the parishes of Benwick, Coates, Doddington, Eastrea, March, Turves, Wimblington and Whittlesey.

CENTENARY CRICKET MATCH Whittlesey residents who went to school in March may be interested in a cricket match being held in March this month to mark one held one hundred years ago to raise funds to purchase a memorial in memory of school pupils and staff who died in World War One. This month’s match between a team from March and the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) will take place at March Town Cricket Club on June 28th, 2019.

In July 1919 a match was organised between the ‘March Grammar School Old Boys’ and the masters and boys of the school to raise funds; an event which marked the beginning of March Grammar School Old Boys Association, now known as the Neale-Wade Association.

The Cambridgeshire Times reported on July 4th, 1919: ‘An interesting cricket match has been arranged to take place on Tuesday next at 11 o’clock on the Grammar School field between teams representing the newly formed Grammar School Old Boys Association (Captained by W Nurse) and masters and boys of the School. A collection will be taken during the interval, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the proposed Old Boys’ war memorial.’

Neale-Wade Association secretary John Phythian said: “Today, that plaque hangs in the Hewitt Hall at the Neale-Wade Academy and displays the names of former pupils and staff who died during the Great War. Alongside the WWI plaque is a further plaque dedicated to those who lost their lives in the WWII and one honouring Corporal Lee Scott, an ex-Neale-Wade pupil and a member of the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment, who was killed in Afghanistan on July 10th, 2009.”

He said ex-pupils of the Neale-Wade and March Grammar School, many of whom came from Whittlesey, plus teachers, friends and others are all welcome to come along and be part of this historic day which will end with a buffet.

A Message to

RESIDENTS

T

he Waterbeach Waste Management Park has been in the news recently because of the decision by Amey to appeal Cambridgeshire County Council’s decision to refuse permission for an Energy from Waste (EfW) facility at our existing site near Waterbeach.

We want to make sure Cambridgeshire residents are aware of exactly what goes on at the plant and how EfW fits into a wider strategy, so we thought we would provide some information and ways for you to find out more.

The majority of Amey’s work at Waterbeach is related to recycling and recovering value from waste, as well as disposing of what’s left over. We do this in a number of ways, such as: processing waste to identify recyclable material; processing compostable waste to create soil conditioner; and reducing the bulk and weight of material going to landfill.

Waterbeach is the sensible location for a future EfW facility as it is already home to a state-of-the-art materials recycling facility and already deals with the waste from across Cambridgeshire. Without a new EfW facility, waste will continue going to landfill – something that everyone is keen to see eliminated. The existing landfill site at Waterbeach can only last another 10-15 years. After that new sites will need to be found elsewhere in Cambridgeshire. Similarly, if EfW is not provided at Waterbeach, sites will be sought elsewhere in the county.

A new Energy from Waste facility would take residual waste processed through mechanical and biological treatment and burn it at an extremely high temperature to create clean, safe energy – potentially enough electricity to power 63,000 homes. Amey are also looking to the potential for providing heat for the homes at the new development at Waterbeach. Compared to landfill, EfW could deliver an annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of over 35,000 tonnes and reduce the amount that the council have to pay every year in landfill taxes – money that could be spent on schools, healthcare, and other local services. Amey also contribute to local good causes through the Amey Community Fund; to date over £5.5m has gone back into community groups and good causes across Cambridgeshire.

So, the milder weather is finally here, and your garden or home exterior could do with a spring clean of its own. Equally, be wary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all that they seem. Here are a few simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader.

• Do they have professional work wear?

• Do they have a sign-written vehicle?

• Are they a limited (Ltd) company?

• Do they have a UK address?

• Do they accept credit cards?

• Are they offering a reduced price for cash or having one time ‘special offers’?

• Are they trying to push you into making a quick decision?

So, if you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business. Needless to say, it is absolutely mandatory that you never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven’t even conducted any work on your premises.

NORTH CAMBS ROWAN LODGE OFFICIAL OPENING – By Steve Barclay MP

t was a pleasure to visit staff at North Cambs hospital again, and to meet the DynamicHealth musculoskeletal and midwifery teams who have moved into their new accommodation.

The new facilities are great and part of a wider transformation of the hospital site. It provides vastly improved clinical areas and privacy for patients, and a welcoming environment with feature walls and murals.

Why Do I Need To Make A Will?

The amount of people who do not have a will is increasing. In 2018 it was reported that 60 percent of UK adults had not yet made one, however it is one of the most important documents you can make. Without a will you can’t ensure that you pass your assets on to the people you most want to benefit after you die.

If you die intestate (without a will), there are statutory rules that govern what will happen to your assets. If your estate is subject to intestacy rules, your assets will very likely not be divided in the way you would have chosen.

You may not have made a will because you have heard that your estate automatically passes to your spouse or civil partner, but this is not necessarily the case. If you leave behind a spouse and children, your spouse will receive the first £250,000 from your estate, your personal possessions and half of your remaining assets. The remaining half will be divided between your children. Children would include your biological and adopted children, but not step-children. This can create problems if your main asset is a property worth more than £250,000 and someone lives in it or if you want to include step-children.

If your estate is valued below £250,000, it will pass to your spouse in its entirety. This can also cause problems if you have been married before and have children from a previous marriage. The children from your previous marriage may not inherit anything if your new spouse dies without making a will or leaves their estate to other beneficiaries and excludes the children from your first marriage.

The law does not recognise a common law husband or wife, so it is especially important to

make a will if you live with someone but are not married or in a civil partnership. If you don’t, your partner will have no rights to inherit your assets under the intestacy rules, no matter how long you have lived together.

If you own a property with someone else and die intestate, your share of the property may not pass automatically to that person on your death.

This could cause problems for the joint owner, particularly if they are living in the property and your beneficiaries wish to force a sale.

If you have no surviving family and die without a will, your estate passes to the Crown and you may have preferred to have benefitted close friends or a charity.

People with young children can also use their will to appoint legal guardians if they become orphaned and can say who will look after their inheritance.

You can also specify the age at which your children inherit, the minimum age is 18, but you may prefer to wait until they are 21 years old.

Why Not Invest In A Second Property?

The first consideration is whether you can afford to hold an investment in property, or will you need to borrow funds. If borrowing is involved (whether this is against the intended second investment or on the property you already live in) it could mean that the project might need to deliver more profit than it can provide.

If borrowing is not required, the profit earned needs to be as good or better than an alternative arrangement after all the charges and taxes have been allowed for, for example an Individual Savings Account (ISA) a pension or an investment bond.

Investment in property can ‘over expose’ your investment portfolio to bricks and mortar (as property has become known). There are traditionally four underlying investment categories: equity, property, bonds and cash.

Having more than about 10-15 percent of your assets in property would normally be considered high risk because property values and incomes can fall as well as rise; property can also be difficult to sell at times of falling values. If this happens at the same time that you need access to funds your plans might have to be put on hold.

In the past, holding property had been considered tax efficient and virtually risk free.

The reality now, however, is that financial benefits have been eroded with exposure to Capital Gains Tax, Income Tax, VAT and Stamp Duty Land Tax. With ever increasing legislation to comply with, ranging from tenants’ rights, health

and safety, tighter building regulations, energy efficiency standards and more – it can make the property venture less profitable and more time consuming than anticipated.

Meanwhile ISA and pension investments have become easier to understand, more flexible in terms of access and potentially more profitable with transparent charges and taxation.

Therefore, the leading question might be turned around to ask: ‘Why invest in property?’ If you are considering an investment – consider your options carefully with a qualified independent financial adviser who will explore the options with you and consider where it fits in to your personal circumstances and timescale.

THE MAYOR’S DUCK RACE Report...

O

n Bank Holiday Monday, April 22nd crowds gathered along Briggate to witness the annual spectacle of the Mayor’s Duck Race.

At 1pm the trainers and support teams started to arrive to set up race headquarters and begin the task of exercising and marshalling the ducks into their starting pens (builders’ bags actually). Whilst ‘Whit’ the duck carefully marshalled by Jenny Parker carefully inspected the course (from dry land of course) encouraging the gathering throng to purchase a ride on the few remaining ducks.

Mayor Julie Windle thanked the spectators for their support and gave details of this year’s charities – The Alzheimer’s Society & the Young Persons Counselling Service.

All 1000 ducks were sponsored very quickly and the race starter and commentator Robert Windle with roving microphone in hand brought the ducks under starter's orders. With the local branch of St John’s Ambulance standing by with tiny flotation collars and splints positioned along the course, the countdown began.

With all the ducks falling at the start (actually dropped into the bower) they quickly recovered to begin their paddle to the finish. Paddle is a term used to describe the jet of water delivered by the local easement and encouragement team, aka the Fire Brigade whose service is invaluable to assist 46

the somewhat dazed little plastic ducks, feeling by now somewhat out of their depth. Passing Squeakers' Brook at a leisurely pace the infamous Canal Turn loomed up fast, complete with its overhanging greenery to snag the unwary stray.

As the heavens opened from above surprisingly on such a hot day – a fireman on the bridge giving additional encouragement – the excitement grew as numbers 444 and 500 made a break for the line only to be swallowed up by the following group.

The last six inches to the stake boats was a closely splashed thing with a photo finish on the line. After deliberation the Town Clerk adjudicated following consultation with the VAR referee and formally recorded the result.

Cycling? It's A Piece Of Cake!

ycling is a very popular activity, and the flat Fenland countryside with its quiet roads is often the destination for riders from other parts of the country, be they some ‘oldsters’ from Peterborough or a group from Hertfordshire – on their way back from an overnight in Hull!

Whittlesey itself hosts a number of groups who regularly pedal off for runs of varying lengths and durations, – often starting at six or seven o’clock on a Saturday or Sunday morning.

The Whittlesea Wheelers has evolved over about three years from a group of workmates and friends who thought that it would be a good idea to go off on their bikes on Saturday mornings to a membership now in excess of 100, with colourful kit emblazoned with the names of local company sponsors. The group organises rides twice a week on Saturdays and Monday evenings, often covering between 40 and 60 miles on a Saturday and 18 to 30 on a Monday, depending on the weather conditions.

The Whittlesey Cycling Group was set up by Tom Moore two years ago who, new to the area and looking for friends to ride with, put the word around on social media. It now numbers 68 members, male and female, from 18 to 50. It organises rides on

Sundays and sometimes midweek, and also has a group who go out on mountain bikes using farm tracks and greenways to enjoy 'off road' routes. All abilities are catered for, with beginners being encouraged, a jaunt along the Nene to Ferry Meadows and back being very popular.

Both groups organise circular routes using side roads that often feature a tea shop with a good stock of cakes at the half way point or as a 'fuel' stop on the return leg. It's all about enjoyment and when more than 1000 calories can be burned off, what is a cake here or there? Members of both groups participate in events like the Tour of Cambridge and the prestigious London/Surrey ride, and charity rides, the British Heart Foundation London to Brighton for instance.

It is recognised that cycling is a healthy pursuit, helping in weight loss, and beneficial for those suffering mental trauma or addiction, but there are also simple pleasures to enjoy. The scents of the countryside, for example hawthorn, cow parsley, oil seed rape, or even 'muck spreading'. Along with the sound of tyres humming on the tarmac, there are the varied sounds of birdsong to enjoy, or the sound of a tractor working a field.

A BIG THANK YOU TO VOLUNTEERS & FUNDRAISERS Hundreds of volunteers from across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and North Essex have enjoyed games, a fun photoshoot, luxury raffle and more at a ‘thank you day’ in their honour.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) hosted the event at Culford School in Bury St Edmunds as a way of recognising the efforts of more than 1400 people who help the organisation across its shops, at its fundraising events and offices, its hospices, and even in the homes of families receiving the charity’s support.

Emily Rose, EACH corporate fundraising assistant, said: “We’re thrilled to have had the support of Ridgeons across East Anglia. They’ve been a fantastic partner to work with and the amazing amount they’ve raised will make such a difference to the families we offer care and support. We’re so grateful to have had such a successful partnership.”

EACH cares for hundreds of children and young people with life-threatening conditions across the region, and supports their families. It costs the charity £16,800 a day to run its service. The day saw 30 volunteers given awards for service over periods of five, 10, 15 and 20 years, with a further 78 such awards posted to volunteers unable to make it, before closing with a raffle that featured bottles of bubbly and a range of luxury goodies.

Hannah Diaper, EACH volunteer services and development manager, said: “Our volunteers are at the heart of what we do, enabling us to reach more families than we could possibly achieve without their support. We couldn’t do it without them and it’s really important we show them that’s the case.”

Meanwhile, a fantastic two years of fundraising

by Ridgeons has resulted in a bumper donation of £51,253.78 for EACH. Staff from the builders’ merchants have taken part in a sponsored leg wax, head shave and skydive, Christmas jumper and dress-down days, running and cycling challenges, held in-store collections, raffles and more.

Some staff also went beyond fundraising by taking part in Bag It, Bring It, Boost It, EACH’s donation drive to boost its shops, and volunteering at EACH events.

Ian Northen, Ridgeons CEO, said: “I just want to say a huge thank you to all our colleagues and customers for helping to support this amazing charity. We’re so proud of the amount we’ve reached and the difference that money will make.

AGE UK LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS IN WHITTLESEY Age UK Cambridgeshire and Peterborough volunteer organiser Mrs Dee Potter is looking to recruit volunteers in the Whittlesey and Wisbech area for its Sharing Time Scheme.

She said: “At present we have clients waiting in both areas to have a volunteer visit them. Support is in the form of regular contact from a fully trained volunteer whose aim is to share their time, friendship and help.

Contact is usually once a week either by a visit to the client's home or a telephone call.

“People over the age of 65, who live alone, are referred to our scheme as they are feeling lonely and isolated and are not getting very much social contact.”

Pretty Muddy isn’t like any other fundraising event. It's a muddy obstacle course that everyone, no matter their ability, can take part in! The Race for Life 5k is a series of routes around the country that give people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities the chance to come together and show cancer who's boss. They're not races or runs, and everyone wins the Race for Life (except cancer).

Food related events feature regularly in Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I’s plans and the lunch outing this month will see members gather at Vesuvio Italian restaurant, Whittlesey on Wednesday, June 5th.

Members of Ladysmith W.I. will celebrate the group’s 48th birthday with a party at the next meeting on Tuesday, June 11th at 7.30pm in St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane.

Entertainment will be provided by ‘Strum for Fun’ and the Whittlesey Ukulele Group and refreshments will be prepared by the committee. There will also be a bring and buy table and the monthly competition is purple.

FRIENDSHIP GROUP TAKES TO THE ROAD More than 40 members of Whittlesey Friendship Group please have enjoyed a trip to Spalding visiting Springfields and then taking afternoon tea at Baytree.

Further trips are planned this year to the Walpole St Peter flower festival and King’s Lynn followed by Skegness in July.

Whittlesey Friendship Group, for over 50s, meets at Queen Street Methodist Church every Saturday from 2pm-4pm. Cost is £1 including tea & biscuits.

HELPING WOMEN OF THE WORLD Coates W.I’s May meeting was a very informative talk by Rosemary Green on how the group works alongside The Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW), and how its ‘Pennies for Friendship’ has helped with vital health, water, sanitation and education for women of the world.

June’s meeting is Morris dancing and the competition is wood while July’s meeting is a change to the programme and is now upcycling and the competition will be pottery.

une brings the start of music events on the square with the prospect of live bands glorious summer days and “where did we pack the deck chairs?” moments. Whilst the indoor music sessions continue on their usual days in the month, the local outdoor festivals begin in earnest.

The Fedz make a welcome return to the Market Place on June 23rd with their mix of soul classics from Motown and Memphis Stax to Northern Soul with a few Ska favourites too. The event is always popular with a relaxed atmosphere and is supported and well marshalled by the town councillors. The provision of a stage (trailer) by Boon Brothers ensures a great experience and has enhanced the event. First aid is always on hand thanks to the local St John’s team and the provision of plastic glasses enables the local watering holes to provide refreshments that can be enjoyed in the sun.

The fun moves on from Whittlesey Market to nearby Chatteris for the annual summer festival on June 29th and 30th with a themed parade from the town centre that finishes in the Furrowfields recreation park where rides, stalls, catering, an event arena, an acoustic tent with live performances from 3pm and main stage acts at 7pm on the Saturday, followed by arena events on the Sunday.

Time to dig out the picnic tables from the shed and (slip slap slop), slip on the hat, slap on the sun cream and slop around in the sandals! Friday, June 14th sees the bi-monthly Folk Club in The Falcon Hotel, Whittlesey from 8pm. With a further two music on the square dates on July 21st and August 18th followed by the Town Festival on September 8th, the town music vibe is looking healthy.

To help with a school topic, Year 4 children from Park Lane Primary and Nursery School, Whittlesey have recently visited the ThinkTank Science Museum in Birmingham where they completed a range of different activities including looking at the human digestive system and their teeth.

They learnt interesting facts about the small and large intestines and were able to describe what happens at each stage of the digestive system.

Sam Copeland, Year 4 teacher at Park Lane, said: “The children behaved brilliantly throughout the day, with the ThinkTank staff commenting on their impeccable manners and brilliant knowledge of the human body.

“A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by all but special thanks to the parent helpers that gave up their time to join us on the trip and to the parents and carers for ensuring the children arrived and were picked up on time.”

Church Wedding Ceremonies Further to my article earlier in the year, I have decided to share this again due to a number of times I have recently been asked “Where can I get married in a Church of England ceremony?”

Many people like to marry in their local parish church.

You can also marry in a church if you are on that church's electoral roll. However, we know that you might like to marry in a different church because it has special significance for you, through family or other special connections. An engaged couple can now do just that if either of you can show just one of the following connections with the parish.

That one of you: • was baptised in the parish concerned or • was prepared for confirmation in the parish or • has at any time lived in the parish for a period of at least six months or • has at any time regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least six months or That one of your parents, at any time after you were born: • has lived in the parish for a period of at least six months or • has regularly gone to normal church services in the parish church for a period of at least six months or That one of your parents or grandparents: • was married in the parish.

In all cases involving church services – i.e. going to normal church services, baptism, confirmation or marriage – this applies to Church of England services. Even if you cannot demonstrate any of the above connections, we want to help you explore whether it may still be possible for you to marry in your special church.

It is also possible for you to be able to marry in the parish church if you are divorced. The important thing to say is talk to me about your plans and we can discuss the options open to you.

Don't Complicate The Simple?

This phrase was highlighted to me while recovering from my recent shoulder replacement operation.

After various attempts in recent years to alleviate increasing osteoarthritis in my shoulder, the only option was a replacement shoulder. I was familiar with knee and hip replacements, but not with the shoulder.

Like most people I began asking around and of course trying ‘Google’, only to receive wildly differing views. Speaking to the doctor at a routine appointment in our local clinic he rightly said, ‘the best one to talk to is the surgeon doing the operation – they will have the real facts’.

During my first meeting with the surgeon, a wing commander in the RAF, I was immediately struck by the way he explained in simple terms what I considered to be a complex operation. As I now look at what will soon be a hardly noticeable scar and a faster than anticipated recovery time, I realise that the reason he could explain things so simply, was that he was not only a very skilled surgeon, he also fully understood this type of operation.

Simplifying things is certainly necessary, especially when trying to settle the ‘God question’. Often people try to work out whether God is real, or The Bible is true, purely by applying human intellectual reasoning, which becomes extremely complicated.

My normal suggestion is to encourage people to ask three very simple questions.

• Why was the might of Rome unable to stop the spread of Christianity, even after having Jesus crucified and viciously persecuting the church?

• Why did Pilate expose those the Jewish hierarchy had incited to lie about Jesus by saying ‘he could find no fault in him’?

• If things The Bible records as happening, never did, surely Rome and Jewish authorities would have found no difficulty exposing them as false – but they couldn’t?

Have A Safe Summer With Your Pet

Tips to help keep your pets comfortable and safe during the summer weather

• Never leave your pet in the car – on a 25ºC day, the temperature inside a parked car can soar to 38ºC in just minutes, and on a 32ºC day the temperature can reach as high as 48ºC in less than 10 minutes, resulting in heatstroke which is serious and can be fatal.

• Always make sure they have constant access to fresh cool water at all times. Make sure the water is not warm or stagnant or left in the sun.

• Dogs like to dig to cool down. Provide them with a damp sand pit to dig and lie down in.

• It is not always a good idea to shave your dog as this can increase the chance of sunburn, especially as double or undercoats actually act as air conditioning for your dog.

• Walk your dog in shady areas, early in the morning or later on in the day when it is cooler.

• Avoid strenuous exercise, some dogs don’t know when to stop playing fetch etc. you need to be sensible for your dog.

• Don’t let them drink stagnant water which runs the risk of them picking up giardia (a parasite) and other intestinal ailments.

• Apply sunscreen to your pets’ ears and nose, short haired, white/light coloured and those with pink skin are more susceptible to burning.

• Keep an eye on older pets and those with allergies where their breathing will be affected, plus the youngsters who will get hot quicker.

• Be aware that the heat of concrete, tarmac, sand etc. will burn, dry and crack their paws, which is very painful and increases the risk of

infection. Place the back of your hand firmly on the surface for seven seconds, if it’s too hot for your hand it’s too hot for your pets’ pads.

• Stay close to home and take your phone in case of emergencies.

• Avoid stressful situations for your pet, increasing the risk of them getting too hot.

• If they spend time outside, make sure they have shade and a drip hose to provide fresh running water for them.

• If they are kept inside whilst you are at work, does your house stay cool for them?

• Keep them away from rubbish bins as they decay quicker in warmer weather and may cause illness if eaten.

• Check them for ticks daily. These are easily picked up during the warmer weather especially in wooded areas and long grass and carry tick borne diseases.

• Take care with those dogs who enjoy swimming.

Not all dogs are skilled swimmers and can become victims of the undertow. Don’t let them drink it.

Salt water can dehydrate them causing vomiting and diarrhoea and water from lakes and ponds has parasites and bacteria that may infect your dog.

• Don’t let your dog hang their head out of the car window, increasing their risk of injury, like debris in their eyes. It's much safer to travel with your dog in a crate.

• Avoid giving your pet leftovers from barbecues as they can cause gastrointestinal upsets leading to vomiting and diarrhoea. The ash or charcoal can result in gastrointestinal problems too, plus keep fire lighters and lighter fluid out of your pets' reach.

• If you are taking your pet on holiday with you, check out the local vets in the area, so you are prepared if necessary and make sure your dog has up to date identification details on their collar including your mobile telephone number.

• Make sure products used during the summer that are poisonous to your pet, like lawn fertiliser, pesticides and herbicides are kept out of their reach. Also remember some garden plants are dangerous, even fatal to them too.

How To Be A Gaming Winner

G

Last month we said there are ways and means to use your current laptop/tower for gaming and here’s how…

aming on a normal laptop requires some special hardware called an eGPU (external graphical processing unit). This connects to the computer via a thunderbolt port that will be located on the side of the computer.

Most computers released after 2016 will have one and it looks like a USB type C port but will have a little lightning bolt next to the port (see photo). If your computer has this you can continue on with the steps, if not then you are unable to complete this upgrade and can only use your computer for minor gaming.

You then have to install a GPU (graphics card) in your eGPU and the end result is massively improved quality of the game you are playing (depending on the graphics card you put in it).

However, if the computer you are pairing it with doesn’t have the power to back it you may end up with slightly lower results than you were expecting.

If you are thinking of doing this to your computer first make sure that the computer has an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 CPU or higher.

So, having decided to proceed your next steps are to decide on the model of eGPU and GPU. You can buy bundles but, in most cases, you can get them both separately a lot cheaper. For an entry level eGPU I think you should be looking for the Sapphire-GearBox at £200 (at the time of writing). This will be your enclosure for the graphics card. I recommend the NVidia GeForce GTX 1060 6Gb, for £180 (again, price is at the time of writing).

At £380 this is a brilliant way to get into gaming without a massive amount of money that you need to lay out. The GTX 1060 6Gb processing unit in this specification would be more than capable to run most games at 1920x1080 with high details and a high FPS.

From there if you would like to upgrade the GPU you can just change the card to something like a GeForce GTX 1070 and higher, but for gaming on the laptop I wouldn’t recommend you start with anything higher than a 1060 6Gb as you may find out that ‘bottlenecking’ happens (which is when one part of the computer runs faster than another part so the system then has to run at the slower speed) when you try to run the game or program you want to run.

In conclusion, if you want to get into gaming but the games you want to play have a higher specification than the computer you are running them on, get an eGPU otherwise look at getting a gaming laptop or better yet a gaming desktop.
