Had an interesting conversation with local estate agent Chris Burton recently.

Chris – who has just opened his own business in the town – was talking about the local housing market and commented that market towns are becoming more popular as people look to move out of cities and relocate to places such as Whittlesey that have a real community spirit.

I think that is a view that is shared by many people. You only have to look through the pages of Discovering Whittlesea to realise that there is a lot of activity that goes on every week in the town with groups meeting to enjoy shared interests and sport or to raise funds for worthy local causes.

This sense of community was recently proven by the success of the Whittlesey Festival which brought together people of all ages who enjoyed a wide-range of attractions on the town’s streets.

I am sure most people like to feel part of a community rather than live anonymously in a major conurbation; there may not be the facilities on their doorstep like there is in most cities but there is invariably a bigger feeling of camaraderie.

Eat the Season

GAMEKEEPER'S PIE This mash-topped stew uses a mix of game meat but if you would prefer to use one in particular, that will work too. Use a more matured meat for a stronger game flavour.

Ingredients 50g butter

1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 700g mixed game meat (partridge, pigeon, pheasant, rabbit and hare all work well), deboned and cut into 3cm pieces 300g pack venison sausages (about 6 sausages), removed from their skins 2 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp tomato purée 150ml red wine 500ml chicken or beef stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 bay leaf 4 tsp thyme leaf, chopped 400g potato, cut into chunks 600g mixed root vegetables (use parsnips, celeriac, swede or turnips), cut into chunks 2 tbsp milk

Method

• Heat half the butter and the oil in a large pan, add the onion and carrots, and cook for about 10 mins until soft. Add the game and sausagemeat to the pan. Turn up the heat, squash the meat with the back of your spoon to break it up, and cook for 10 mins until nicely browned.

• Stir the flour and tomato purée into the meat, cook for one minute, then add the wine, stock, sauce, bay and three tsp thyme. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover with a lid and cook for one hour.

Remove the lid and cook for 15 mins more until the meat is tender and the sauce has thickened.

• Put the potatoes and veg in a large pan, cover with water, bring to the boil and cook for 20 mins until really tender. Drain, leave to steam for five mins, then mash with seasoning, milk and the remaining butter.

• Heat oven to 220˚C/200˚C fan/gas 7. Tip the meat into an ovenproof dish and spoon on the mash.

Sprinkle with the remaining thyme and bake for 45 mins until the top is golden and the sauce bubbling.

Highlights

All the Fun of The Festival!

This year’s Whittlesey Festival has been hailed a roaring success. This was the 11th year of the festival and the committee was absolutely delighted with the day and hoped that everyone had a fantastic time. The organisers would like to thank everyone who took part in the event for their support including stall holders, sponsors, entertainers, musicians, dancers and the thousands of visitors who came on the day.

The festival started with a colourful and musical parade led by the superb Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band followed by a spectacular horse and carriage parade from Broad Street. Most of the people taking part on the day were in the parade which really helped to set the scene for a truly successful day with the people who lined the streets and cheered along the route helping to create a real carnival atmosphere as it made its way to the Market Square.

The official opening was performed by the Mayor of Whittlesey Cllr Julie Windle after which families and their children enjoyed free face painting, puppet shows and fairground rides amongst many other activities. There was plenty to do for the adults with numerous stalls to visit and everyone enjoyed watching the various dance and music presentations including the Rug-Cutters Lindy Hop dancers, The Solas School of Irish Dance, the Whittlesey Christian Church Dancers and the Majorette troupes together with a fitness display from Andy Harding and his group. Crowds were treated to additional performances from the

Toy Soldiers and the Peterborough and Bedford Highland Bands together with the traditional cockney sound of the Pearly King and Queen from London, plus a World War II Spitfire flypast.

The Church Yard Green had a music marquee and a host of activities for all ages and there was a full music programme in St Mary’s Church including choirs from local schools. The streets were lined with more than 120 spectacular vintage vehicles including motorcycles adding a touch of nostalgia to the day. A spokesman from the group said: “We are delighted to support the Whittlesey Festival year on year as it is by far our favourite event – we simply love the atmosphere and the visitors are always genuinely interested and passionate about us being there – we wouldn’t miss it.”

The Festival Schools Art Exhibition was held at the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street with some incredible work on display from local schools including Park Lane, Alderman Jacobs, New Road, Coates and Sir Harry Smith Community College (SHSCC). Prizes and trophies were awarded on festival day by the Mayor of Whittlesey. Look out for an exclusive feature on the art competition in the November issue of Discovering Whittlesea.

Interesting articles to help you understand your body better

E

Understanding coughs, colds and worse ver wondered why when people are exposed to an illness (let’s say somebody enters the work place with a cough) some people succumb, and others do not?

For decades our focus has been on eradicating the germ (or micro-organism). The term microorganisms defines organisms that are too small to see with the naked eye e.g. bacteria, fungus, virus, etc. When we take antibiotics, we are looking to kill the micro-organism to rid ourselves of the disease.

If this is the case, why then do some people remain unaffected? If it is all about the micro-organism then surely everybody who is exposed will suffer.

It is a valid argument to answer that the non-sufferers are already immune because they may have been exposed to the micro-organism before (learnt immunity). However, this argument does not hold true when we consider new micro-organisms. Recent examples would be the bird flu or Ebola. Here nobody has learnt immunity as nobody has been exposed to it before. Therefore, these outbreaks should be catastrophic affecting hundreds of millions of people. Yet they do not – why?

Let’s go back to basics and look at the definition of micro-organism disease. Wikipedia uses this very clear definition: “These small organisms, too

small to see without magnification, invade humans, animals, and other living hosts. Their growth and reproduction within their hosts can cause a disease.”

We have highlighted the key phrase in the definition here; growth and reproduction. The micro-organisms not only have to invade but reach a critical mass before they can cause disease. Until then we are immune.

Recent studies have shown many healthy nonsymptomatic people having the harmful E-coli strain within their gut flora. Yet they remain symptom free.

So what dictates micro-organism growth and reproduction. The answer is favourable conditions.

Each micro-organism will need a certain set of conditions to flourish. Our internal environment is composed of sugars, salts, fatty acids, amino acids, coenzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters, white blood cells, waste products and toxins. Therefore, alter the internal environment and it can turn the balance of power to another micro-organism.

Diet, lifestyle, exercise, water intake, stress, emotional balance and sleep will affect the composition of our internal environment and thus which micro-organisms flourish.

Would regular stretching benefit you or help improve your sport?

Do you feel that some of your muscles are too tight, or it is difficult to move freely?

Stretching is one of those things that tends to get dropped to the bottom of people’s healthy to-do lists, but adding it to your daily routine can be highly beneficial.

Stretching is essential for improving flexibility, which is related to muscle tension and length, which allows a joint through its full range of motion.

4 RELIEVE STRESS Thanks to its euphoric and oxygenating effects, stretching minimises stress that can tighten muscles.

It is also great to stretch out tight neck and shoulder muscles when working at a desk, or in the same position for long periods of time.

5 RELAX, RECUPERATE, AND PREVENT INJURIES The majority of muscular efforts compress various joints as well as the spine. Stretching helps to decompress your back as well as your joints.

This prevents injuries while speeding recovery of the joints, tendons, and muscles.

We can help you – our sports and massage therapists offer an appointment to assess you, to identify tight muscles that may restrict how you move and increase your risk of injury. They will produce a customised exercise programme to include a range of stretches that will be beneficial for you, and show you how to do these safely and effectively. You will receive a copy of the programme, so you can continue your recommended exercises at home.

This would also be useful for people who have recently taken up a new sport, or who are trying to help prevent injury, and may be beneficial in addition to sports massage therapy.

Widows in Contact

B

ereavement is a lonely place. Even if you have supportive family and friends (those that don't cross the road on your approach), you were two and are now one. Everything changes, and apart from the grief there are practical problems to consider.

Even today, some ladies don't drive, so getting around can become a problem, and there are all those domestic tasks that are often left to the menfolk, mowing the lawn, opening tight jar tops!

Here in Whittlesey however, there is an organisation that supports widows and tries to make the situation a little less lonely. It has been going for nearly 40 years, arranging monthly meetings, social events, trips, and providing that unique awareness that comes from a shared experience.

The Whittlesey Widows Contact Group was set up

by Olive Wright after her husband, Cecil (founder of the now sadly closed Wright's store) died in 1978. She went to Canada to visit a relative and was invited to attend one of their contact group meetings. She was so impressed that she decided to set up a similar group when she got home. She remained heavily involved until her death in 2006.

They meet on the last Thursday evening of the month at St John’s Hall, 7pm to 9pm, where the members enjoy a wide range of activities. These include speakers, bingo and other games, and 12

invited entertainers. Transport door to door is provided for those that need it through FACT for a small charge, so that all members can attend without any concerns for their safety. Coach trips are arranged by Betty Hughes; there are trips to Peterborough theatres and others further afield.

There are also regular visits to the cinema at Wisbech, and a luncheon club where members enjoy meals out at different venues once a month.

There is a lot going on, but the most important part is ‘contact’ – members look out for ladies who have been recently widowed, getting in touch to offer support and an understanding ear. They make hospital visits, make sure members' birthdays are celebrated, keep in touch with those who are unable to attend the meetings, and are committed to making life a bit easier for widows in Whittlesey.

Although the membership is limited to 50 due to the capacity of the venue, there is always room to help recent widows, as it is an integral part of the group's purpose. Tropical Colours for New-Build Apartment – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin

Miya, a dental surgeon from Trinidad, had bought a new-build apartment by the river.

She was desperate to introduce colour and called me in to help.

The room was not quite square but trapezoid, with kitchen units along one wall. Though the shape was a little awkward the light was fantastic. Up high with a balcony painted in glaring yellow I knew I could make this space into the perfect home. She told me her likes and dislikes and showed me a few of her favourite pieces; some art glass, an embroidered footstool, a few pictures. From these I was able to take my inspiration and design the room with flexibility in mind. ‘Cottons, linens and silks,’ Miya said. ‘I want it homely and warm, not bland.’

The open plan area of approximately 27 square metres had to serve as both a cooking and entertaining area and be welcoming and relaxing for Miya after a long day at work. An L-shaped sofa

is the key item of furniture and a custom-made round rug fits snugly on the floor beside it. In the dining area a chunky table with four luxury leather chairs add a touch of style, especially charming when the floor-to-ceiling drape is drawn. Evening meals can be light and bright in the summer or romantically cosy in winter.

As this was a brand-new apartment we didn’t need to change the lighting or the floor covering but a softer ambience is achieved with a few additional lamps; an architectural floor lamp and an African print table lamp fitted my concept perfectly.

Oh yes, of course… the mural. The mural is the wow factor! Miya put her trust in me and we are both chuffed to bits with it. When you start an interior design scheme with a wacky yellow balcony you just know it’s going to be fun!

LIONS HELP LOCAL CHARITIES Whittlesey Lions have been helping local people who are blind or partially sighted.

The town’s doctors’ surgeries and opticians kindly collect old spectacles for the Lions which are then sent for off for recycling. The lenses are sent to Third World countries and the frames sold.

The Lions donated £200 of the money collected to Peterborough Association for the Blind to enable it to purchase reflective jackets for its walkers.

The cheque was presented to PAB chairwoman Sylvie Wheeler by Lions president Steve Palmer at a recent garden party in Ashton near Helpston.

Also, over the Christmas period 2017 the Lions collected used postage stamps.

The original organisation they were collected for is unable now to make use of them, so they have been donated to the Royal National Institute for the Blind.

COLOUR CHAOS RAISES MORE THAN £5500 More than 340 runners competed in the Royal Air Forces Association’s (RAF Association) annual Colour Chaos charity run at RAF Wittering raising more than £5500.

Participants battled through waves of fluorescent powder paint to navigate the 5km course round the Cambridgeshire RAF station.

Colour Chaos provides a unique opportunity for the public and serving personnel to run, jog, dance or walk round an active RAF base – all the while being showered in a multitude of colours.

The event was organised to raise vital funds for the RAF Association’s welfare support work. Every £1 raised by runners will go towards projects that help members of the RAF family across the country.

One of these is the Storybook Wings initiative, where serving parents record their children’s favourite bedtime stories before departing on active service. Once recorded, volunteer editors work their magic by adding sound effects and music to the story, to give it a really special feel.

The completed story is sent to the child in a personalised CD cover, or digitally, ready to listen to whenever they like. Every child also receives a special bravery medal with their recording.

Helen Tempest, challenge event manager at the RAF Association, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to all the participants and volunteers who supported the event. It was a fantastic effort from everyone involved.”

YOUR MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Hello! What a fantastic festival we had in Whittlesey a few weeks ago. The festival gets bigger and better every year and this year we were very fortunate that the good weather enabled a wonderful Spitfire flypast.

It was a truly marvellous showcase event for Whittlesey. I met and spoke with many residents and visitors who had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Brian Smithyman and his Whittlesey Festival committee did us all proud. Thank you. Next year’s festival is on Sunday, September 8th.

Ready for Hallowe’en on October 31st?

- What’s that all about then?

Hallowe’en is a night of celebration, every year, on October 31st. The word Hallowe’en is a shortening of “All Hallows' Evening”, (the day before All Hallows’ Day). Traditional activities include trick-or-treating, bonfires, costume parties, visiting "haunted houses" and carving pumpkins or “jack-o-lanterns”.

Hallowe’en has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (pronounced "sah-win"). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture. Samhain was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and prepare for winter. The ancient Gaels believed that, on October 31, the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead overlapped and the deceased would come back to life and cause havoc, such as sickness or damaged crops. The festival would frequently involve bonfires. It is believed that the fires attracted insects to the area which in turn attracted bats to the area. These are additional attributes of the history of Hallowe’en.

“Trick-or-treating” is an activity for children on or around Hallowe’en, in which they proceed from house to house in costumes, asking for treats such as confectionery with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" part of "trick or treat" is a threat to play a trick on the homeowner or his property, if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating is one of the main traditions of Hallowe’en. It has become socially expected that if you live in a neighbourhood with children, you should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters.

Burton & Co Well-known Whittlesey estate agent Chris Burton has set up his own practice in the town.

Burton & Co is now trading at First Floor, 5 Market Place, handling sales and rentals for both domestic and commercial properties.

Thirty-eight-year-old Chris says the business will offer all typical estate agent services, from conveyancing to mortgage advice, and promises a personal service.

He said: “There is a gap in the market for someone with experience of the local property market. I know the area and people well and always try to treat people how I would like to be treated myself.

“My aim is to give my clients the best possible help and advice. My door is always open for people to come in for a chat about what they are looking to do; it’s not just selling them a property it’s about helping give them the best possible advice and personal service.”

Chris has been an estate agent for the past five years having previously spent fifteen years in the insurance market with Lloyds of London.

He says he is pleased with the start the business has made since opening at the beginning of August.

He said: “It has been a far better start than I could have hoped for and we are already ahead of our business projection.”

Chris said the local property market is slightly down on last year but is buoyant compared to the national average.

He said: “The local market has grown considerably over the past ten years and values have gone up.

We are now catching up with Peterborough prices.

Market towns such as Whittlesey are becoming more popular as people are looking to move out of cities to places with a real community spirit, which Whittlesey has. I’ve also noticed that the age of the local population is getting younger.”

Chris added that commercial business is good at present with more national brands starting to show an interest in setting up in the town.

As for rentals, he said the market has slowed down over the past six months due to new government legislation, tax rules and financial uncertainty, but there was still a large rental market in the town.

Chris, who lives in Whittlesey and is married with four children, says he hopes to take on staff in the coming months and eventually would like to open another branch in the area.

Why Should I Form a Company?

A Guide to Incorporation for Small Businesses

Limited companies can create ‘floating charges’ over the assets of the business; this is a special type of security given to the lender which allows them to recover the debt from non-permanent assets such as stock, work in progress or cash. Companies also have other ways to raise finance, including selling shares in the business which allows them to raise capital without borrowing money. There is also a range of other options not open to partnerships and sole traders.

Many small business owners wonder whether it would benefit them to form a limited company or if it is better for their business to remain as a sole trader or partnership.

Often the legal and financial jargon can seem baffling and the consequences don’t always seem clear. The fact that incorporation is governed by the Companies Act 2006, the longest piece of legislation ever produced by Parliament, can make the idea of creating a company seem like more trouble than it’s worth. While incorporation isn’t for everyone it can bring a lot of benefits, some of which I will outline below.

Many people decide to incorporate because it limits their personal liability. Before forming a company, sole traders and partnerships are completely responsible for any debts and liabilities their business incurs.

An incorporated company has its own legal personality and as such, employs its own staff, enters its own agreements and incurs its own debts. Shareholders are only liable for the amount unpaid on any shares they buy but as most shares are paid up in advance, company owners are generally more able to walk away if things go wrong.

Incorporation brings a wider range of options for raising finance than a sole trader or a partnership has. If a sole trader needs a cash injection to kick-start, grow or rescue their business they are limited to borrowing money, either from friends and family or a bank loan.

With partnerships and sole traders, the organisation within the business can become muddled. Often there is no defined structure that separates out the departments, regulates internal and external relations and ensures continuous review and management of affairs. An enterprise where roles are not clearly defined can create tensions which could risk the whole business if uncorrected.

An incorporated business has an inbuilt structure which is flexible enough to adapt to the market yet solid enough not to be ignored. A good example of this is the distinction between the owners (shareholders) and managers (directors) although these can be the same people.

A company can also create subsidiary companies to further limit financial exposure and delegate parts of the business to different sub-companies. This is particularly important for those looking to grow their business into a large company.

Incorporation isn’t right for every business; it is important to consider initial and ongoing costs, management, filing annual accounts and whether incorporation coincides with the size, financial position and objectives of the business. There are other ways to structure a business without forming a company.

OCTOBER Gardening Tips Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months, plenty of digging and manuring. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts, and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas, so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it.

Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise it, and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manures that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring.

October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb and also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are:• early broad beans.

• rhubarb crowns.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so.

• Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter.

Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake, (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

FENLAND LEADS THE WAY IN HELPING PEOPLE TO GET ACTIVE – By Steve Barclay MP

N

ow the school holidays are over, it is a good time of year to take up a new sport or become more active. Active Fenland is leading the way in helping people to get active which is both good for their health and provides good fun through taking up new hobbies.

I have seen first-hand the fantastic impact Active Fenland has had on our community since 2015, after I secured £250,000 for the council to fund the three-year project and drive participation in sport. The project has performed well for three years and as a result, received further funding from Public Health, Sport England and the Controlling Migration Fund to further build on its success.

Active Fenland is seeing huge community benefits from some of its current projects which include co-ordination classes for Reception pupils at Peckover Primary School (Wisbech), chair-based exercise classes for elderly residents at Bradshaw Court (March) and buggy fitness classes for mums (currently available in March and soon going to Wisbech).

The Active Fenland team has also supported the development of Parkrun in Whittlesey and

the Junior Parkrun in Wisbech and has some excellent new projects in the pipeline, such as working with local businesses to promote staying active and being healthy in the workplace.

Greencore (Wisbech) has already signed up to this and I look forward to hearing how the programme benefits the employees who work there.

If you are interested in taking up a new sport, meeting new people and being more active, I urge you to get involved in some of the activities which Active Fenland is providing in your local area. No matter what your age, ability or level of mobility there is something on offer, from walking football, chair-based exercises, beginners’ running sessions and activities for children.

LADYSMITH WI LEARNS ABOUT THORPE HALL NEW BOOKLET IS PUBLISHED Over the past two years The Whittlesey Mud Walls Group has been measuring, photographing and recording the existing mud walls in Whittlesey and Eastrea and it has now produced a wall survey booklet.

Wall owners have allowed the group on to their properties to produce an up-to-date record of the town’s heritage and all owners and their neighbours are to receive a copy as well as Whittlesey and Coates schools.

The 52-page, A4 survey booklet will be available for reference at the library, council offices and museum.

The printing was funded by Glassmoor Local Environment Fund and an education grant, with help also being given by Whittlesey Town Council and Fenland District Council’s conservation officer.

COME AND TRY A HARVEST SUPPER Whittlesey WI is holding a harvest supper and a try it evening on Tuesday, October 2nd, where members will be able to try various crafts and hobbies.

This follows last month’s meeting when Corrine Wooding and Penny Stevens from Penco spoke to members about the start-up of their dress shop business when there was also a Penco fashion parade.

On Tuesday, November 6th, it will be the annual meeting with the election of the WI committee and officers, plus a bring and buy stall, while on Tuesday, December 4th members will be entertained by Ricky Locke, a member of the Magic Circle.

Whittlesey WI meets at St Andrew's Parish Hall, Parkinson Lane, Whittlesey at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month. New members and guests are always very welcome to attend.

Whittlesey Ladysmith WI members have been learning all about the love and care of the staff at Thorpe Hall.

Many local families have personal experience of Thorpe Hall and Aimee Jepson came along to the September meeting to tell members all about the wonderful work the staff there does.

Her talk follows a visit from the Thorpe Hall catering team who brought their delicious afternoon tea to Whittlesey in August.

Committee members have already been working on the programme for 2019 which is packed with interesting speakers, lunch outings and demonstrations.

The next meeting is Tuesday, October 9th 7.30pm at St Andrew's Hall, Parkinsons Lane. Kate Patterson will be 'gingerbread decorating' and the competition will be members’ efforts to copy her skills on the night which should be fun!

OCTOBER MEETING WILL BE BLOOMING GOOD! The topic of Coates WI’s October meeting will be autumn flower arranging to be followed in November by the annual meeting.

September’s meeting was a very interesting talk

by Monica Thompson on the necessity of state planning, with members receiving plenty of interesting information.

Members have been thanked for their support for the Upwood Ukuleles evening which proved to be very enjoyable.

High Performance Gaming Towers: Advice & Guidance Firstly, on behalf of Discovering Whittlesea we wish to apologise for last month’s article which was written for my advert and advertising in Discovering March but inadvertently included in your magazine, and, secondly, we are very proud to announce that AA Whittlesey Computers Ltd is ranked in the ‘Top 3 Best Computer Shops in Peterborough’; in my opinion, quite an achievement.

Oliver is writing this month’s article and would like to explain what you should be looking for in a high-performance gaming tower.

You will require a multi-core CPU (central processor unit – the brains) and the more cores the better.

Your next decision is usually to decide whether you want an AMD or Intel CPU. I prefer Intel, e.g., Intel I5 8600K or I7 8086K, however at £450+ these are very expensive. A cheaper, and excellent alternative would be the equivalent AMD chip, e.g., Ryzen 3 2200G or Ryzen 5 2400G which are typically half the price of Intel, or, Len’s favourite, the AMD FX Black Edition (FX 8350/60/70) which feature eight cores and superb speed.

Next is your case, cooling system and fans. A reasonable gaming case will start at £80 although it is not unusual to pay up to £150. It is always better to fit a water-cooled system rather than a fan attached to the processor and at £80+ is an excellent investment. Having decided on your processor and case you then need to choose a gaming motherboard to match. This is the backbone of your system and, currently, an Intel CPU the Z370 Aorus Gaming 7 from Gigabyte at £250 is excellent value. or the MSI 970 gaming board. For an AMD CPU the ASRock X399, at £350 is stunning or, alternatively at £170 the MSI X470 is very good.

Next is the graphics card. You really want to buy the best you can afford; the choices are mainly between AMD and NVidia. NVIDIA have been dominating the market with their ‘10’ series of graphics card which includes the 1050TI, 1060, 1070 and 1080 (£200-£500). AMD cards include

the RX 540X, RX 550/60X/70X/80X. I would suggest the NVIDIA 1050TI at around £180-£200 or an even higher spec card if you can afford it.

Next is storage. You should install an SSD (solid state drive) for the operating system and then an HDD for the data. This configuration will allow you to have the blazing fast boot speeds of the SSD but also the high capacity of the HDD. Finally, you need to buy some RAM (random access memory) and a power supply. Usually RAM will cost approximately £10-£20 per Gb, and, yes, you can buy a power supply for £30-£40; but please spend a little more (say, £80-£100) for a high-performance supply which will guarantee you continuity of power without fluctuations, which can damage no end of parts in your tower.

It’s easy to spend £1000-2000 on a gaming computer and a cheaper alternative is to buy a second-hand tower with, say, an i5 processor and then upgrade it. Next month, I will write about the different software usually used on a laptop/tower.

Welcome to our new ‛Live Long and Happy Club’ – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

Our pets are entering their senior years anywhere from the age of seven years and just like with us, things change as they become older.

We can see behavioural changes, because of physical reasons, and physical changes, because of behavioural reasons.

Have you seen any of the following in your older pet?

• Interact differently with you, other people or other animals.

• More sensitive or reactive to things in their environment e.g. noises.

• React in different ways to everyday life e.g. has changed their choice of sleeping area, wants to be close to you more or spends more time on their own.

• Stands differently, holds one, two or four legs out to the side to help keep their balance or has both front legs close to each other.

• Have trouble getting up from lying down.

• Makes a groaning noise as they lie down or never lies on a particular side anymore.

• Have trouble going up and down steps or stairs.

• Find exercises they used to love doing, difficult.

• Less physically active, tires quicker during their walks or cats go outside less or hunt less.

• While out walking they stop or lie down and move quicker when they know they are on the way home.

• Sleeping for longer periods.

• Less interested in playing.

• More anxious about things in general e.g. a change in their routine or a new location.

• Growling in situations they never did before e.g. if you disturb their sleep, drying their feet after a walk.

• Hearing or sight loss related changes in their behaviour e.g. recall is not so good.

• More sensitive to you touching them.

• Less compliant and responsive to cues you have taught them.

• A decline in their appetite.

• Have trouble sitting or sit differently now e.g. tilted to one side, with a leg out to the side.

• Appears confused or disoriented or gets lost in their own home or garden.

• Have started to stand in corners of the room or facing a wall.

• Loss of their housetraining skills.

These are just a few things you may be seeing as your pet becomes older and even though it is easy to attribute these to being normal for them as they age, we shouldn’t feel the need to accept this is the way of life for them now. There is a wealth of things we can do for them, to ensure they spend their senior years enjoying life to the best they can and continue to have that sparkle of life.

What to do about Financial Worries

Apart from some stress busting strategies where the internet could help you deal with stress better (for example; move your body, sleep, spend time with family and friends, adopt a healthier diet, quit worrying, get a massage, drink tea, be present, don’t forget to smile, listen to music) – you could try some practical measures: Understand your position There is no simpler way than to write down all your income on one side of a piece of paper then write down all your expenditure on the other. This needs to cover a specific timeframe, an easy way is to do it every calendar month because some months have different spending patterns (e.g. birthdays, holidays, annual bills etc) and sometimes income is not uniform (e.g. overtime, benefits paid weekly, bonus, absence from work etc).

Once you understand whether there is enough income to support your lifestyle, or whether there should be a surplus of income it is important that all the decision makers agree that this is the case.

Next is to decide what you want to do about it.

For example; ‘We should have about £500 more than expenditure every month on average – yet we usually don’t save anything’ is the sort of conversation I regularly hear. This often indicates that some expenditure is being conveniently ignored, and this might be for all the best of intentions – but it is going to have an impact later in life.

One mother had set up a savings account for her son to go to university when he was a toddler and had been squirrelling away about

£50 per week, this was great when satisfactory A level results came in and there was a fund of £35,000, on closer examination the fund was made up almost entirely from the contributions Mum had made – the interest earned was miniscule. If the same contributions had been made in to a tax efficient investment that was structured to provide growth, there would have been a bigger fund (with the benefit of hindsight over the last 16 years and virtually every other 16-year period you look to compare*), this could have reduced contributions over the last few years to improve matters for the family or provide additional benefits for the young man.

Saving for your own later life should also feature when surplus income seems to ‘evaporate’, using a pension you can increase £1000 to £1250 by tax relief alone, and if that contributor is a higher rate tax payer the benefit is even greater.

This month we look at buying equipment...

“No-one ever had too many guitars” a musician friend once said, and you can even get T-shirts with that logo on, but what is the reality? Musicians will naturally aspire to have the best equipment their bank balance can afford (sometimes exceed).

However, is the most expensive the best and what alternatives are there?

For most performers, unless hitting the big time, the outgoings are always greater than the income. The pay in the local music scene has been falling in real terms over the last 20 years with all the pressures of business rates, staffing costs, falling consumption and the numbers of pubs and music venues closing is at an all-time high. Luckily technology is getting cheaper and the sound equipment has in real terms remained affordable. However, the top-end instruments, guitars, percussion, and stage pianos have held their price above inflation.

For some the move to online purchases has been the answer resorting to eBay or online bulk suppliers, great in the short term (assuming the purchase arrives in one piece) but like the pubs and clubs, signals a demise of the high street music shop. The sad thing is that what looks great online with flashy YouTube or manufacturers’ videos to promote may in reality not live up to your expectations.

A lot of musicians have also in the past been guilty of going into the local music shop, trying various bits of kit then ordering online at a discount from a shed with no overheads or product knowledge (buy in bulk, box it, dispatch it and make mega O CTOB E R 2018

bucks’ site). The downside being the loss of local shops not only selling the big products but the accessories and sundry items that you may need urgently today for a gig.

Dealerships similar to the car industry are also a point of reference for new equipment that fails within the warranty period and in some cases may loan a temporary replacement whilst the pride and joy goes back to the repair shop for a bit of TLC. Most music shop staff are also musicians and can give the advice on which product best suits your ability, performance need and budget and some of the local dealers also run music schools and provide group and one-to-one tuition.

Even some inexpensive guitars can be set up to professional standards by local Lutherans who will adjust the neck, frets and intonation to feel ‘just how you like it’ and in most cases to a better standard than how some more expensive instruments left the factory. Stage pianos are usually a matter of taste and feel with some really good quality sounds at reasonable prices (though not always from the internal speakers). Always go in and try and if you feel there is room try a bit of a barter, there is nothing to lose and most dealers would rather make a sale than lose to an online shop. Remember, what sounds great online may not be what you hear from the basic instrument.

As the old saying goes... Use it or lose it!

MAYOR’S CHARITY FUNDRAISER Penco Dress Agency is staging an event this month to raise funds for The Mayor of Whittlesey’s Charities.

HOSPITAL AT HOME CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY The Hospital At Home service is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, it provides palliative care for patients in their own home rather than having to receive care in hospital. Staff provide care in the day, as well as a night-sitting service to patients and their families. Hospital At Home also provides rehabilitation services, such as physiotherapy.

Peterborough became the first place in the country to have a Hospital At Home service when it was launched in 1978. Two years later when the service was threatened with closure because of funding issues, the Hospital At Home Friends Group was launched.

Since then the group has raised more than £6 million for the palliative care services provided by Hospital At Home, with the most recent donation worth £100,000. The money raised exclusively funds nurses so the service can operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Dee George, secretary and treasurer of the Hospital At Home Friends Group, said: “Hospital At Home is a wonderful service and many people help to raise money through lunches and events, and we are also bequeathed money as well. The amount of donations we receive just proves how much it is valued by patients and their families, which allows the service to help more people.”

Sophy Beth’s Hair & Beauty will take place at The Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street on Tuesday, October 16th, arrive 7pm for a 7.30pm start. Tickets, including a welcome drink and canapes, are priced £5.

A new independent garage has opened in Whittlesey.

TDM Automotive has moved into new premises at 6 Low Cross where it will carry out service, repairs and maintenance work on all makes and models of cars, light commercial vehicles and motorhomes, as well as handling Class IV and Class VII MoTs. The company was started four years ago by 28-year-old Daniel Mathers who previously ran the business from premises in Farcet Fen. He has worked in the automotive business since leaving school.

I’ve already had a lot of new customers and walk-ins which I didn’t get at my previous premises.

Daniel said: “I’ve always been interested in repairing cars. My grandfather Sid had a place in London and my father Ian started off in the business, so I suppose garages have always been there in the family. My dad was a friend of Frank Guild of FM Motors, so I started working for him as a schoolboy and I did my apprenticeship and spent eight years there.

“I can carry out most work, from clutches, brakes, exhausts, timing belts, diagnostics etc, and always try to use quality parts. A lot of people have been burnt by poor garages who give everyone else a bad name, but I plan to provide a good local professional service. I’ve never advertised in the past as a lot of my business has been by word of mouth and recommendation, but I’ve now just started to advertise and also use Yell.com as I want to grow the business.

“Having been at independent garages, I have always worked on a variety of makes and models which I think can be an advantage over the main dealers who only work on specific vehicles. I can deal with all types of cars and light commercial vehicles and also have the equipment to work on motorhomes as I have the necessary ramps to handle them.”

Daniel has had a positive start at his new spacious premises which he moved into two months ago.

He said: “I’ve really wanted premises in the town for some time and couldn’t wait to move in here.

Church Matters

A Fond Farewell A retired senior bishop of the Church of England once wrote: ‘God has proved his love for us through Jesus, and particularly through the death of Jesus,’ but I would like to add, if permitted, that I have (also) experienced nothing but the love of God, through each and every person I have met and ministered alongside, since my arrival in Whittlesey, to work as a member of the Whittlesey, Pondersbridge and Coates Ministry Team.

Since arriving at the beginning of November 2017, every person I have met at our local schools, care homes, bakery, Nisa, Co-op, funeral directors, the local restaurants and many more establishments, has left me with many memories that will take me through the next phase of my ministry.

I say memories, because it is with some degree of sadness that the time has come for me to transition to being the Vicar of St Paul’s Church, Tottenham.

But I will be quick to say that, I am not saying goodbye but ‘thank you,’ because one cannot say ‘goodbye’ to family. All that I have achieved during my curacy and priestly ministry, would not

have been possible without the love, support, encouragement and prayers of Revd Nigel Whitehouse, our lay ministers John Crisp and Roger Brown and indeed our churchwardens and all the people of St Mary’s, St Andrew's, St Thomas’, Holy Trinity Churches and each and every person I have met during my time here. What a joy and blessing it has been to be part of the lives of so many wonderful people? I will miss you all, but as I prepare to move, please do keep me in your thoughts and prayers, as I continue to pray for you all. God bless you.

WHITTLESEY CHRISTIAN CHURCH Is Your Glass Half-Empty or Half-Full?

This is a popular expression that is generally used as a rhetorical question to indicate if a person has a positive outlook on things (half-full) or whether they view things or situations with pessimism and negativity (half-empty).

So often we are influenced by the people around us who can determine our attitude to things or our mood. It may be that we’ve woken up in the morning, the sun is shining, and we are raring to go, excited about the day, and then we step outside our front door only to bump into someone who only has negative things to say to us. They may be complaining, gossiping or even criticising you or someone else and before you know it you feel deflated and downright miserable. You also probably end up believing what was said and then you feel negative towards the person that is being gossiped about and the downward spiral begins.

It says in the Bible that ‘The tongue has the power of life and death’ (Proverbs18 v21) which means

that the words that we listen to and allow to influence us can determine our entire outlook on life. It’s not just what others say though, it can be what we say or think about ourselves. If we think negatively about ourselves or the situation we are going through we can very soon become depressed, feel low and in a dark, hopeless place.

Life is all about making decisions and we can choose to believe what God says about us, such as we are precious to him, he will never leave us or forsake us, we are the ‘apple of his eye’ and our names are written on his hand. There are many ways in which God shows his love and care towards us regardless of our past mistakes.

Knowing that God is there with us in every situation brings us a new hope where before there was hopelessness. Why not make the decision today to find out more about how real God can be in your life today and you’ll soon have reason to view your life with a ‘glass half-full’ attitude – in fact it will be overflowing. You’re welcome to join us on Sunday mornings at 10.45am.
