Introduction

Welcome to Your September Issue.

I remember the day well. Standing in front of the bathroom mirror having a shave I was suddenly aware of a towering presence behind me. It was my son. It was then that the awful truth came over me. He was taller than me and he wouldn’t be getting any shorter over the ensuing years.

This was a few years ago so you may wonder why I’m recounting this story now. Well I’ll tell you. For the painful truth has hit me that not only is he taller than me he has now started to usurp me in other ways.

After giving my father of the bride speech at my daughter’s wedding a couple of weeks ago and receiving a pretty good reception I then sat back to hear my son deliver the best man’s speech.

Building Better Opportunities Building Better Opportunities is a community-based project funded by the Big Lottery through the National Lottery and the European Social Fund. autism, mental health issues or brain injuries.

Our aim is to support individuals who join the project to develop and build on skills according to individual need. These include becoming more independent, moving towards potential employment opportunities, travel training, social and academic skills, using IT, upcycling furniture and learning how to budget and use money, all of which build on the individuals’ selfconfidence.

Our participants take part in a number of activities and a number our learners are working in our Community Connections shop based in Whittlesey. On Mondays the shop is staffed by the Building Better Opportunities team.

We serve customers, sort out your donations and are involved in all aspects of shop work from setting up the till in the mornings to packing up at the end of day. This gives us lots of opportunities to put the things we have learned into practice.

Our project runs at FACET in March and is based in Marwick Road. The project is aimed primarily at people with learning difficulties,

How To Become A World Famous Musician The road to becoming a successful musician is long and treacherous, full of twists and turns, on a journey that seems endless. But what if I told you that it’s actually only a few steps? Giant steps, but still only a few. The hardest part for most people is actually starting this journey.

So how do you take that first step? The only thing you really need to get started is just a few chords. You’d be amazed by how many songs that you know and love only use three or four chords. Do any of these ring a bell?

The best way to get started with achieving this level of success, is to not give up at the first hurdle! Ed Sheeran started out with no ability as a musician. In his early days, by his own admission, he wasn’t very good - he couldn’t sing well, and certainly didn’t have the songwriting capabilities which now enable him to create global hits.

The difference between him and many other musicians that didn’t make it, is that he was committed to nurturing and developing his skills. He never gave up.

So your first step to success is to get that guitar out of the cupboard, brush off the cobwebs and keep trying. If you can learn your first three chords, you’ve taken a huge step towards your goal. The next step, is not to give up until you’ve reached it!

holesterol has a bad reputation in the media as it is associated with arterial disease. But what is the whole story?

There has to be some benefit of having cholesterol in our system, otherwise why would our bodies expend energy digesting it, synthesising it and transporting it around our bodies?

The first thing to appreciate is that the molecular structure of cholesterol puts it into a group of compounds termed lipids, i.e. fats. Lipids are insoluble in water because of their molecular structure and so are insoluble in our blood. However, if they attach themselves to certain proteins (termed lipoproteins) then they become soluble.

Our cells require two main types of lipids, cholesterol and triglycerides. Triglycerides contain fatty acids which the body uses in our muscle cells and any excess is stored in our fat (adipose) cells.

Cholesterol is used mainly in the: 1) Construction of our cell walls

2) Formation of a number of steroid based hormones (e.g. testosterone, oestrogen, the stress hormone cortico-steroid and a number of others) and 3) Building block of bile that enables us to digest lipids Triglycerides and cholesterol can enter our bodies through our digestive system (termed the external pathway) or synthesised internally within our liver (internal pathway). Whichever pathway they come from, they need to be transported and here we need our lipoproteins. The lipoproteins are like the lipid buses. They pick the lipids up and then drop them off wherever they are needed via our blood.

The triglyceride and cholesterol that enter through the external pathway are picked up

by the chylomicron lipoprotein bus at the small/ large intestines. Its first stops are the muscle cells and then the adipose cells. In both cases the triglyceride units get off and are absorbed, whilst the cholesterol units stay on. They get off at the liver stop where they are either used to make bile or steroid based hormones or they meet up with their triglyceride and cholesterol friends from the internal pathway and await the departing Very Low Density (VLD) lipoprotein bus.

The first stop again is the muscle and adipose cells where again the triglyceride gets off. The cholesterol stays on, but the bus changes its name to the Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) bus and off it goes. The next few stops are to all the cells it encounters where one at a time the cholesterol units get off and those cells use the cholesterol to either build their cell walls or with certain cell types make steroid based hormones. At the end of the stops there may still be some cholesterol units left on the bus. The LDL bus driver should now return to the liver and drop the cholesterol off. The majority do; however a small minority of drivers are irresponsible and choose to dump the remaining cholesterol units in the arteries before returning to the liver. Those units are now stranded. Fortunately, the liver is aware of the LDL driver's irresponsible behaviour and so has commissioned the HighDensity Lipoprotein bus to pick up any stranded cholesterol units within the body and return them to the liver where the cycle is repeated.

The irresponsible behaviour of a small minority of LDL bus drivers is the reason LDL is seen as the bad cholesterol and HDL seen as the good cholesterol.

The main message however is that all components are important in maintaining our body’s health.

SEPTEMBER NEWS & UPDATES - By Steve Barclay MP

A

s part of my Read to Succeed initiative, my office raised more than 2000 new books for Year 4 and some Year 5 children which were distributed throughout North East Cambridgeshire ahead of the summer holidays.

I first launched the campaign three years ago after a number of teachers raised the issue that many children fail to make progress during the summer holiday, when they are out of school.

Read to Succeed aims to help combat this. In the back of every book donated is a library token, which each child can take to their local library and take part in the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Those who complete the challenge can win a host of fun prizes including: • Film screening at The Light Cinema • Swimming pool party at a local swimming pool • Roald Dahl’s ‘Revolting Rhymes’ workshop session with Rhubarb Theatre • Fenland Bushcraft workshop session • Animal handling workshop with Lion Learners

LAMB BURGERS WITH BEETROOT MAYO In gredie nt s

Lamb and mint is a classic flavour combination, but the contrasting beetroot relish in this recipe takes it up a notch!

Method

• Mix the lamb, grated onion and herbs in a bowl with some seasoning, then divide the mix into four and shape into burgers.

• Heat a griddle pan until hot, rub the burgers with oil, and cook for five to six mins on each side, or until cooked through.

• Meanwhile, mix the mayonnaise and beetroot with some seasoning. Fill the bread rolls with some watercress, a burger, a dollop of beetroot mayo and a few onion slices. Serve immediately.

STAGE IS SET FOR THE WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL The countdown to this month’s Whittlesey Festival has begun with excitement building as the Market Square and surrounding streets and buildings will be buzzing with fun and laughter.

The event – on Sunday, September 9th – will start with a colourful and musical carnival parade fronted by a spectacular horse and carriage which will set off at 10am from the Whittlesey Christian Church in Broad Street when the public is being urged to line the streets to cheer on and enjoy this wonderful display.

The parade will make its way to the Market Square for the official opening by the Mayor of Whittlesey at approximately 10.15am. Music and song will fill the air and there’ll be various dance displays with a full programme of activities throughout the day. This includes, back by popular demand, the Cockney Pride Pearly King and Queen and their band from London, the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band, and the combined Peterborough and Bedford Highland Pipe Bands who will also perform a grand finale prior to the close of the festival around 4pm.

Children can enjoy free (or subsidised) rides and amusements, free puppet shows and face painting and there are numerous stalls for families to visit. For the first time there will also be a free land train with a station located at the end of High Causeway (near Heron Foods).

ROYAL AIR FORCES ASSOCIATION PLANS COLOURFUL DAY OUT The Royal Air Forces Association wants to keep everyone near RAF Wittering in the pink at RAFA Colour Chaos on Sunday, September 9th.

This fun family event, open to the general public, is being held within the grounds of RAF Wittering and will entail approximately 5km of colourful fun. You can run, jog, dance, walk, whatever you feel like; the one certain thing is that you will get plastered in powder paint!

The course will pass points of interest around the airfield, so this is great opportunity to see ‘behind the wire’ at an active RAF station.

The association’s team will be waiting to cheer you across the finish line and present you with an event medal. Money raised by the event will help fund the association’s Storybook Wings project.

Helen Tempest, event organiser, said: “We are all looking forward to RAFA Colour Chaos – it will be a great family day out, with the added bonus of raising funds for Storybook Wings. This allows serving personnel working away from home to record a bedtime story that their children can listen to while they’re away. Music and sound effects are added by our volunteer editors, creating a wonderful keepsake for children missing Mummy or Daddy.”

CATHEDRAL TO HOST TIM PEAKE’S SPACECRAFT The spacecraft which transported Tim Peake, the UK’s first European Space Agency astronaut, to and from the International Space Station, has landed at Peterborough Cathedral and will remain on show until Monday, November 5th.

HELP KEEP THE STREETS CLEAN Whittlesey Street Pride is looking for more volunteers to help keep the town’s streets clean.

Anyone wishing to join the group – which usually meets on Saturdays – is advised to attend the meeting point of the day wearing good footwear.

Chairman Fred Mills said: “We will provide protective equipment for you including litter pickers, high visibility vests, gloves and litter-bags.

“You will be asked to read and sign health and safety rules to make sure that you stay safe during the event.

The Soyuz TMA-19M capsule, complete with equipped interior and char marks on its outer body from its re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, will be displayed along with its 25-metre diameter parachute and Tim Peake’s own Sokol KV-2 emergency spacesuit, as part of a national tour, presented by the Science Museum Group and global technology innovator Samsung.

The display of the iconic craft will be accompanied

by Space Descent VR, a unique virtual reality adventure using Samsung Gear VR technology.

Narrated by Tim Peake himself, Space Descent VR recreates the experience of making the incredible 250-mile journey back down to Earth from the International Space Station inside a Soyuz capsule.

The Cathedral will present a programme of spacethemed activities during the exhibition, including a holiday club, entitled ‘Be an Astronaut for a Day’ and a Star Dome, presented by Leicester’s National Space Centre. The Museum of the Moon, a touring artwork by Luke Jerram, will also be on display during the spacecraft’s showing, presented as part of Vivacity’s 'Without Walls' programme, from October 5th-14th.

On June 30th 2018 we arranged a trip to Hunstanton in memory of one of our service users – Derek Osler, who sadly passed away before getting to Hunstanton which was one of his favourite places to visit. On arriving in Hunstanton after two hours, we had fish and chips with drinks, overlooking the sea and walked around the shops as it was a beautiful day.

New ‘Call Blocking’ Initiative Helps to Silence Nuisance Callers YOU’RE just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner or bathing the kids, the phone rings - and it’s one of THOSE calls.

It is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. However, many of these are made not just by cold callers, but by scammers; bringing misery to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, such as those living alone or with dementia.

At Safe Local Trades, we echo the concerns of groups like the recently-formed Cambs Against Scams Partnership and the nationwide Friends Against Scams initiative - which recognise the harm done by fraudsters; not only those who dupe their victims to part with their cash, but who also feel threatened and helpless against the callers.

In 2016, a grant of £500,000 was made to National Trading Standards Scams Team, (NTS Scams Team), to provide telephone call blocking technology to people who are bombarded by scam and nuisance calls, and are most vulnerable to losing money to these callers.

Initially, the focus was on providing call blocking units to people living with dementia.

There are an estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025. The project has been a great success, with the units blocking 99% of scam and nuisance calls received and making dramatic improvements to users’ wellbeing.

And, equally as important, the results saw a 97% reduction in users losing money at the hands of scammers, an 85% reduction in users feeling helpless to stop the calls, and an 85% reduction in the number of users who were worried by these calls.

Friends Against Scams is a NTS Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to “Take a Stand Against Scams”.

Friends Against Scams has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing information about scams and those who fall victim to them. This information enables communities and organisations to understand scams, talk about scams, and cascade messages throughout communities about scams prevention and protection.

FAS encourages communities and organisations to take the knowledge learnt and turn it into action.

The Real-Life Heir Hunters

I am sure that many of you have enjoyed TV shows like Heir Hunters where long lost relatives receive a life changing inheritance from a distant relative they were not even aware of, but this is rarely the reality.

In a case where the deceased did not leave a Will, solicitors look to the Intestacy Rules. These rules determine how the estate will be divided according to a strict formula based on the family tree. This is fairly straightforward when there is a surviving member of their immediate family. This can include spouses, children, siblings or even parents but the process becomes much more difficult when there is no immediate surviving family.

That is when we may need to call in the real-life heir hunters. Understandably, this is less glamorous than when it is shown on TV, but what really happens? In my experience it is a long, frustrating and expensive process, as well as potentially upsetting or disappointing for the beneficiaries. It is almost certainly not how the deceased would have wanted their estate to be administered.

In a recent example, the deceased was an only child, both of her parents had died, she had never

married, and she had no children. In a case like this, we have to trace the aunts and uncles on both sides of her family. With the help of heir hunters, we discovered that she had eight aunts who had all died before her, but who had left children of their own (the deceased’s cousins).

Some of the cousins had also died before her, again leaving children of their own (the deceased’s second cousins). The Intestacy Rules require her estate to be split into eight equal parts with each part passing to the children and/or grandchildren of the deceased’s aunts in differing proportions.

The family tree in this case was vast. So far, we have managed to identify 70 beneficiaries, many of whom had never met or even heard of the deceased. It is now more than 10 years since the deceased died and nobody has yet received a penny from her estate because we have still not been able to trace all of the beneficiaries and we can’t pay out until we have. There will not be much left for any of the beneficiaries as the estate was only worth £20,000 and most of this will go towards the cost of tracing the beneficiaries. So, these beneficiaries will not be getting the nice surprise that we see on television.

Surely this is not what the deceased would have wanted. It could have been so easily avoided if she had made a Will. It is unclear why she didn’t. It is possible she thought that she didn’t have enough to need one. However, if she had made a Will she could have left what she did have to a few people that she really cared about rather than having it divided between a lot of people that she didn’t even know.

Cork: A Soft Hardwood – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin

The holiday season enables us to travel abroad, experience new places, and create memories that will sustain us for the months ahead.

I saw my first Cork Oak forest in Andalusia Spain in 1990; the farmer harvested the bark every nine years, so the trees remained healthy and productive. Thoughts of that trip come back whenever I open a bottle of Rioja. Classed as a hardwood Cork Oak is a native of the Mediterranean. It is a survivor. After a forest fire new branches grow from the trunk; the tree’s life is preserved by the thick layer of soft cork bark.

We think about cork being used for bottle stoppers, pin boards, and cork tiles but it should no longer be considered in utilitarian terms. In its raw state cork can crack if it dries out but after processing it is shown to be durable and flexible. It has sound

absorbing qualities and takes colour very well.

Cork has moved up the ladder from the mundane to luxury in my view.

Sustainability is at the heart of the work of Jenny Espirito Santo who trades as Mind the Cork. She sources bark from Portugal and my horizons expanded when I met her in 2015 and saw her homeware designs. I was impressed by her range of cushion covers. Jenny has developed a fine material, unique in my experience, I know of no-one else who has done this. Cork is far more versatile than I ever imagined. The cork material that Jenny has created looks like canvas and feels like fabric; it is silky to the touch.

Take another look at cork when you are next out and about. There is much to inspire the home-maker, from Jenny’s cushions to clocks and light fittings.

t has been a popular activity for many years, variously known as 'the Thursday afternoon Tea Dance' or 'Manor Leisure Dancing', but whatever, members of the Social Dancing Group (Whittlesey) enjoy their dancing and tea or coffee and cakes every Thursday afternoon 2pm to 4pm at the Manor Leisure Centre.

It was started by Fenland District Council about ten years ago as part of their 'Get Active' initiative for the over 50s. In 2012 the group formed its own committee to continue to be able to keep dancing, and for a time had a paid leader/ teacher. Today the committee comprises eight people, which ensures that the members can continue enjoying their favourite activity. The annual subscription is £5 with a weekly entrance charge of just £2, which includes the important tea or coffee and cakes part way through.

Although in the early days the emphasis was very much on the traditional ballroom dances like the waltz, and quickstep, today 'sequence' dancing is most popular. They have more than twenty different dances available, some of which include waltz and tango rhythms, and a few line dance 50

tunes are also played. Latin American numbers are included where the more adventurous can show their style. There are members who are happy to just appreciate the music and social atmosphere.

There is no doubt that they all enjoy and value their dancing, making a fun and welcoming atmosphere that suits all ages and abilities.

There is a rota of three couples to run the dances each week, so that no one person's particular preference dominates. On most occasions the music is produced from CDs through the venue's own sound system, but every three months 'live' music is provided by an organist.

Three times a year, spring, summer and autumn, balls are organised on a Friday evening when there is live music and a buffet. The venue is decked out in elegant drapery that gives the hall the appearance of a sumptuous large marquee.

In June they enjoyed a strawberry tea.

Although there are more than one hundred signed-up members, the usual weekly attendance is in the sixty to eighty range, and guests are welcome. Due to the huge popularity of the dances however, a waiting list for new members has to sometimes be applied.

A harvest supper and a try it evening will be held on Tuesday, October 2nd, where members will be able to try various different activities and crafts.

The topic of Coates WI’s August’s meeting was women’s suffrage with a talk given by Sue Slack who focused on some courageous women of the past who campaigned to give freedom to the women of today.

While on Tuesday, November 6th, it will be the annual meeting with the election of the WI committee and officers, plus a bring and buy stall.

The theme of October’s meeting is autumn flower arranging with the group’s annual meeting taking place in November.

Obviously, we would like to increase our business and as we have always had a regular number of customers from March, we recently started advertising in Discovering March and have now also started placing editorial articles in the magazine.

Firework Season: Get Ready!

It’s only a few, short weeks before the firework season starts, so here’s some advice to safeguard your pet.

Prepare a special area away from any windows for your dog to go to during firework events. They may already have a place they like to go to when feeling distressed; if so, and it is feasible, use this space. Place lots of blankets in there for your dog to burrow and hide in, helping them to feel more comfortable. Feed them their dinner and give them chews in there during the weeks before fireworks begin. NEVER use it as a punishment, it’s meant to be a safe place for them.

On the night of fireworks • Feed your dog before the fireworks begin, in case they become uncomfortable and don’t want to eat. Exercise/walk your dog before any fireworks are likely to start.

• Play moderately loud rhythmic music or have the TV on, to help to mask the noise of the fireworks.

• Give your dog an item of clothing that has your scent on to help them settle.

• Close all windows to keep out as much noise as possible.

• Close curtains early to keep out flashing lights. If your curtains are thin, hang a sheet over the top so the flashing lights cannot be seen from outside.

• Act normal to avoid communicating to your dog there is something to be concerned about.

• Avoid taking your dog out when fireworks are occurring, even if they are OK. It only takes one episode of a fear response being triggered to create future problems. If you do happen to be out and about, keep your dog on a lead at all times.

• The number of lost dogs found increases during the firework season. Make sure your details are correct on their collar identification tag and microchip and that all gates, fences, cat flaps, doors etc. are secure and escape-proof.

• Play a favourite game or do a favourite activity to keep them happy and prevent them becoming anxious or settle them down in their special place before the fireworks begin.

• Give your dog some tasty chews. Chewing helps to relieve anxiety; however, don’t be worried if they are not interested, this will depend on how anxious your dog is feeling.

• NEVER get cross with your dog as this can make them worse. If they are already anxious or very fearful, any form of frustration, anger or punishment from you will only add to their anxiety or fear, leading to further problems.

• Despite warnings you may hear, you can comfort your dog during fireworks, with a massage or long gentle strokes, to reduce your dog’s anxiety, but do make sure you remain neutral with no signs of anxiety in your voice or body. Comfort does not increase their fear!

• Ignore all the noises yourself; act happy and relaxed as if nothing is happening.

• Never force them to experience the fireworks in the hope they will get used to them, this will only make them worse. Imagine how you would feel if someone was forcing you to experience your worst phobia.

• Remember to breathe in a relaxed steady way which can help your dog relax.

• NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG HOME ALONE! If your dog, unfortunately is already quite scared of fireworks, there are things you can do to help them overcome their fear, but you need to start working with them now, teaching them that fireworks are part of everyday life and bring no harm or danger to them. Please contact us to arrange for one of our nurses to help you put a plan together and teach them to not just cope with fireworks but to find them ‘fun’.

There are natural remedies and prescription medication available that can help them cope if started well before the firework season starts. Again, for more information on products available, please contact us at the surgery.

What Investment Should I Choose for Inheritance Tax (IHT) Planning?

Many consider an Individual Savings Account (ISA) to be the most tax efficient way to hold an investment. During the owner’s lifetime this could be a valid argument, and although it is possible to transfer an ISA allowance to a surviving spouse, it will not help in reducing the IHT problem. You may presume that there is an unlimited allowance between spouses in the UK, in some cases it is essential that a valid will is effective (because the rules of intestacy can treat survivors harshly).

Returning to the ISA, this allowance ceases at the time of death leaving the investment value within the estate (an ISA cannot be held in a trust) – the investment value could pass to the survivor and it remains in the estate unless something is done.

There are several courses of action including (limited) pension planning, exempt gifts, trusts, Agricultural Relief and investing in assets that qualify for Business Property Relief (BRP).

The aim of BPR (similarly Agricultural Relief) is to protect businesses and allow them to pass through the generations without splitting them up. Having appreciated the aims, it is important to realise that some of the legislation can be helpful to those of us that do not have a family business (e.g. a farm).

The Government also wishes to promote investment (shares) in a business and/or an unlisted company. Buying in to a qualifying investment is usually best entrusted to an investment manager with knowledge and experience in this market – sometimes referred to as the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) that was established in 1995*.

There is significant risk investing in such investments due to the nature of the underlying companies,

they might not be start-up companies, but they will be smaller and need to be well researched.

On the other hand, rewards can be handsome, and the tax advantages may be attractive (it is important that an investor does not allow the ‘tax tail to wag the dog’ as the saying goes).

In IHT planning the seven-year timescale between gifting, and the asset passing out of an estate valuation is quite well understood by many, what is less well understood is the shortening of that time span to two years if it qualifies for BPR. Furthermore, unlike an outright gift, the investments can be accessed by the donor if circumstances change because they remain the property of the investor.

This explanation is not intended to suggest suitability to anyone, it merely demonstrates one of several options where financial planning can reduce exposure to unnecessary taxation.

All too soon the festival season runs down to a few remaining outdoor events and we return to the reality of regular events and occasional pub/ club gigs. This is the time to take stock, carry out those essential maintenance jobs and pack the equipment only used at large outdoor events away for the winter.

Most performers have a set routine for these tasks and although time consuming, it helps to keep the kit in a ‘gig ready’ state as there are often “can you just” events popping up unexpectedly. The Christmas fairs and light switch-ons may seem a long way off but with shopping mall and high street Christmas events starting in November the gear must be in prime condition.

The luxury for some of experienced road crew and reasonable event break down times is not always possible and the ‘wind it up and chuck it in a box’ technique results in a post-gig chore akin to unravelling wool that has had a kitten attack.

Kinked cables pressed into transport crates after a long day can be the start of connection failure with soldered connectors and even the cable itself being stressed into submission. Amplifiers and speakers running at high temperatures, and this summer has proved to be one of the hottest, can also develop niggling faults and faders can be affected by dust and pollen particles.

Pulling up a comfy drum stool, my first job is to empty the cables onto a clean mat, sort it into the various types, untangle as required, check for kinks, clean the cable sheath with a wet wipe, re-coil into a loop the diameter that will not stress the S E PTEM B ER 2018

conductors and finally test before stowing in the correct box.

Next a visual inspection of all the speaker and amplifier cabinets for scuffs and damage. This is usually a good indicator for potential issues, both mechanical and electrical. Any unusual sounds or unexpected variation in volume or quality noted during use can be followed up during this check.

Give the casing a clean and store back in its protective case or bag.

Mixer faders can be vacuumed to remove dust/grit and then cleaning spray applied to break down any film that has set on the carbon track, which is a major source of noisy controls on analogue equipment.

Modern stage lighting equipment has moved on to being LED based so a simple switch-on to check that all elements work followed by clean and store is all that is needed, however, any old lamp or tubebased lights will need checking to confirm that the elements have not suffered from vibration damage which is common when moving whilst still warm.

Once a year all the mains cables and equipment have to be Portable Appliance Tested for electrical safety and each item checked numbered and recorded on a sheet. Check the visual condition and function of any ironwork (microphone, speaker, lighting, stands).

Finally remove the windshields from all microphones sanitise and leave to dry/air.

LIONS DELIVER TO LOCAL GROUPS

Whittlesey Lions have made generous donations to organisations and community groups in the town in recent weeks.

Our photograph above shows president Steve Palmer presenting a cheque for £500 to founder Pino Soccio of Young Technicians, an organisation which delivers lessons and practical experience for young people in lighting, sound and stage production in the music industry; one of the young technicians has gone on to work for the BBC as an apprentice.

Pino said: "I am very grateful to Whittlesey Lions for their kind donation. This will enable us to continue to fund this project."

The photograph above right shows Steve donating a bingo machine to the residents of Palmers Close which is a sheltered housing complex for the elderly.

Complex manager Julie-Ann Walsh said: "Our residents do enjoy their game of bingo. When our old machine broke down we asked the Lions if they could donate some money towards a new one. They did better than that; the Lions bought the machine for us. We are very grateful for their generosity as the residents will get hours of fun."

Over the Easter period the Lions went around the local public houses who did an Easter raffle on their behalf, raising more than £700. This money is to be donated to local care homes to enable them to have entertainment, trips out to the seaside or just a posh meal.

Steve Palmer said: “We are grateful to the local landlords who have helped us raise this amazing amount. We will be donating £150 to each home so the residents can enjoy themselves.

EACH FEST CANCELLED East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has had to cancel EACH FEST. The line-up was to feature Bjorn Again, Supreme Queen, The Rolling Stones Now and the 2FBS Band, who were due to play at Huntingdon Racecourse on Saturday, August 25th.

Sam Loveday, EACH director of income generation, said: “Due to disappointing ticket sales, we are very sad to say we have taken the decision to cancel EACH FEST. We can only apologise for any inconvenience this causes, as we now contact those who have purchased tickets. Refunds are being provided.

“Cancelling an event is never something we want to do, but in this case, we feel it is in the best interests of EACH and those who have bought tickets.”

She added that EACH needs to generate more than £6 million a year from fundraising so is constantly trying to come up with new events that engage its existing supporters and attract new ones.

Your Garden

September Gardening Tips What an amazing summer we have had, but watering has been a major issue during those weeks without rain: this was my main task during that time as the weeds were fortunately easy to keep down. However, the watering paid off and I had the best season for a while and some super crops.

Now is the time to lift potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop. Make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks, and only store undamaged tubers. Onions should also be lifted and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed. Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes. Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen.

As far as sowing seeds and planting out goes, there’s not much that can be done: you can still sow rocket, spinach, oriental salad leaves and winter lettuces. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. Spring cabbages can be planted in their final positions, but it is wise to cover them in netting to keep the birds and other pests at bay.

If you haven’t already got a composter, now would be a good time to make or buy one as there is plenty of dead or dying material available from your plot. If you have one, add any material that isn’t diseased, turn it, water if it is dry, and cover to keep warm. Don’t forget to add “brown” materials such as autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, egg shells and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50, with no dairy products, meat or fish, nor non-degradable materials.

• A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation –leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over –cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, and leave new canes un-pruned.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Clear the soil of spent crops and leave it ‘rough dug over’ for the winter. It is also a good time to sow “green manures”, such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia, which overwinter and can be dug into the ground next spring.

WHEN IT FEELS GOOD TO HURT Self-harm is a very common behaviour in young people and affects one in twelve, with 10% of 15/16-year-olds believed to be self-harming.

There are lots of reasons why young people selfharm. It can happen if they are feeling anxious, depressed, stressed or bullied and feel they don’t have any other way of dealing with these issues.

It is often used as a coping mechanism. The physical pain of self-harm might feel easier to deal with than the emotional pain that's behind it.

Sometimes it can also be a way for them to punish themselves for something they've done or have been accused of doing. It can also make a young person feel they're in control of at least one part of their life. It’s not always a really big thing that leads to self-harm and the young person may not even be sure why it started.

Self-harm can take lots of physical forms, including cutting, burning, bruising, scratching, hair-pulling, poisoning and overdosing.

When a young person self-harms, chemicals are released into the brain which can become addictive very quickly. They may feel an instant relief of pressure and ‘bad feelings’, but this relief is short lived and once they start, it can become a compulsion.

If you discover your child is self-harming, it's very important that you stay calm and let them know that you're there to help and support them.

If they want to talk about their self-harm and why they're doing it, sit down and listen. If they're finding it hard to speak to you, they might feel more able to talk to a counsellor. Self-harm is difficult to talk about, but it’s a common problem and help is available.

HOW TO SURVIVE SECONDARY SCHOOL!

A

re you between Year 6 and Year 7? Are you nervous about joining secondary school? Has everybody been telling you not to be nervous? Well, why? You’ve every right to be nervous, it’s new and scary!

You’ve come from being top of the school as Year 6s and now, the youngest of the lot as Year 7s.

However, nothing bad is going to happen to you!

So, here are some top tips for ‘surviving’ school.

1 Be open to new people. Making new friends can be hard. And the transition between primary and secondary school can be tough because although you’ll probably have friends that you’ve grown up with, you’ll also meet so many new people. And, it’s okay to have different groups of friends, it’s okay to ‘float’ between groups of people, it’s okay to grow out of friendships that you may have had for years. But, what’s not okay, is to discriminate against different people.

Be open, listen and learn from them.

2 First impressions count. There are seemingly two types of Year 7 pupils. The nervous, quiet ones and then the loud, bolshy ones. Find an in between. Try not to be nervous. But also, please don’t be the cocky one who ‘squares up’ to Year 11s for no reason – this won’t end well.

3 If you’re scared, or have any worries, tell somebody. Do you have a teacher you already really like? Tell them if you have a concern!

If there’s somebody who is mean to you, tell someone. It can only be solved if you’re honest and open with people. Do not keep it quiet!

4 Uniform. I can remember all the way throughout Year 7 I kept my uniform so perfect, my tie was even, skirt over my knees and my hair was always neat. And, as I got into the second and third year 68

of school, I started to rebel against my teachers and made my uniform scruffy, just to be awkward. DON’T DO THIS! “Holly take all those earrings out!,” “You’re not allowed to wear eyeliner to school!,” “Why have you got pink hair?!” As I look back now, I am embarrassed at my attempt to ‘stand out from the crowd’. Yes, everybody is different, be yourself and stand out.

Stand out for being a nice person, for being funny, having good school work or for helping people. Don’t stand out just for the sake of it, but also, don’t lose yourself. I learnt this after a few years, and a few detentions. Although I was still myself, you could tell from my appearance that I was creative and confident, and that I cared about making the right impression.

5 Have fun, but the right kind of fun. There is nothing wrong with having a good time at school, in fact, it’s the best way to do it! Have a good time, but also, take it seriously. You’re wasting your time if you’re only there to mess around.

6 Lastly, don’t take it for granted. You’ll miss it one day. I remember people saying this to me all the way through school, and I never got it! Until my final year. I realised how much I was actually going to miss school. I wore false eyelashes on my final day, and as I was crying, I didn’t realise they’d slipped off and had been sat on my cheek for a good few minutes. I’m embarrassing.

In all seriousness, make the most of every single day, learn, listen and have a great time while doing it. Make all the friends you can, avoid drama where possible and don’t take a second for granted.

Keep your head up. You got this kid, good luck!

Church Matters

The Seed of Faith This will come as no surprise, I often get asked why I believe in God? Not always in such a direct way.

Sometimes it is just the result of sharing a person’s current experience of life. In fact I do ask the question of myself.

There are a lot of routes into the answer. Here is one which I feel should come first.

Left to itself the seed stays where it is. Ignored it simply cannot grow.

I believe in God because my parents did. They had a faith which meant they brought me to baptism when I was a few months old. My sister and brother and I were taken to church from the same early age. As we grew our faith grew – we went to church primary school. Aged nine I already said that I felt called by God to be a priest. Not wanting to discourage me but having sensible parents and teachers I was told come back when you’re older. Well you all know what happened and here I am today.

A life of faith begins with the statement ‘I believe in God’.

Faith is a gift from God, a seed sowed in what it means to be human. We all have the gift. My baptism and my growth in the practice of faith that is attending church and learning about what it means to be a Christian enabled the seed to grow.

I was encouraged by my family and my church to make that statement for myself. A life of faith is just that, a whole lifetime seeking to deepen and understand what it all means. No-one stops asking questions about their faith. Some people never start to ask questions. Some people deny they have the seed of faith or just can’t see that it is there.

I invite you to pray the following: “Lord God teach me to see the seed of faith which you have planted in me.

Give me the desire to ask the questions about faith.

Bring me daily closer into your presence.”

Does the Hypocrite Affect You? While not excusing hypocrisy, because we are human, we can and do fail. Failing does not make an individual or a church a failure. It’s the covering up of any failing which does that.

In her teens, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Dillard became disillusioned with the church due to the hypocrisy of people who came purely to be seen by others as doing good and having a social conscience or showing off their clothes. She decided to confront the senior minister head-on with her complaint about hypocrisy. He was an experienced, calm man who heard her out, then agreed that her concern was genuine. Annie felt her arguments dissolve.

On leaving his office he gave her a number of books by C. S. Lewis and suggested she might find

them useful, then said: “I think it’s rather hasty for you to be quitting the church, but I believe you’ll be back soon.” After reading four of the Lewis volumes, she fell right back into the arms of the church again.

People should no more assess the church or the message of God’s love by looking at hypocrites, than they should value diamonds by comparing them with counterfeits. The question is, what is true? not, how have people failed to live up to the truth?

The church must always seek to strike the balance between two issues; one, upholding the teachings of Jesus Christ, two, remaining a genuinely loving and welcoming place for all people. This is not always the easiest thing to get right every time.

But we must retain a determination to try, and when we get it wrong to freely acknowledge it, then put it right.
