Introduction

Welcome to Your August Issue.

Last month I wrote about my impending house move. The good news is that it went well, thanks in no small part to the efforts of the removal men – many thanks – and my wife, myself and the family dog have now happily settled in to our new abode. Now my attention has to turn to another major event… my daughter’s wedding. I’m not sure if this has been a cunning plan devised to get all stress-related events of the year over with in a short, sharp, spell, or an act of madness – I think I now know the answer!

Anyway, my future son-in-law’s stag has been safely negotiated and after I’ve finished the magazine I will turn my attention to composing the father of the bride’s speech. As someone who spends a considerable amount of my time hunched over a keyboard and who in the course of my working life has delivered many public speeches you would think this would be a simple matter. Wrong.

When the marriage was announced I found I quickly constructed the speech in my head and it seemed like a stroll in the park. Now as the big day approaches, the words have gone, and it seems to have developed in to somewhat of a daunting challenge. Wish me luck….

What is the Purpose of Fat? t is always a controversial topic but let’s forget our animosity towards fat for a moment and consider a) why it exists and b) why its location varies between genders.

Why does it exist?

Fat has to have a purpose, otherwise why have it?

There are four main reasons:

1 Storage of energy and nutrients to help us during times of hardship 2

Protection – by creating a soft coating around our organs it absorbs shocks associated with our everyday impacts (e.g. missing a step, bumping into a wall, etc) as well as the extraordinary events such as falls or blows

Buoyancy to help keep us afloat in water.

Humans have always lived near water and therefore swimming/fishing has always been a part of our lives. This is why most professional swimmers do not look as muscular as other athletes, because they have and need more fat to help them float

Insulation due to its location immediately under our skin (called subcutaneous fat) and its poor conduction of heat. In the modern world however, its insulating role is becoming more redundant with the development of clothes, central heating, air conditioning etc.

Why does it exist where it does?

There is no definitive answer; however, all current theories relate back to our ancestry. This is because our modern existence makes up a very small percentage of life on this planet. Thus, our bodies are still programmed for the ‘old way’ of living.

The male pot belly Humans used to live a hunter gatherer life and it was the job of the males to hunt, climb and fight.

Hence, the chance for an impact was much higher (be it a fall, a blow from a tree, or a fight with an animal or another human). The abdomen, chest and pelvis are all areas that contain our organs, thus they need protection. The chest and pelvis have that, via our skeleton, i.e. the ribs and pelvic bones respectively. The abdomen however is relatively exposed. Therefore, it makes protective sense for our males to grow fat in this area as it acts as a pseudo-shield around our abdominal organs.

Another advantage of abdominal fat is that it’s very close to our body’s centre of gravity. As hunters, fighters and climbers it was important that males were mobile and nimble. By placing fat near our centre of gravity it dramatically reduces its impact on our mobility, and positively influences our stability.

Female thighs and bum So why not use the same approach with females?

Well it all comes down to perception and looks.

If females were to have fat predominantly stored in their abdomen, it may give the impression they were pregnant. This for obvious reasons would put off a potential mate.

Females still needed to store fat and be nimble.

Therefore, the location of the fat still needed to be close to their centre of gravity. The answer was the next closest place, i.e. the buttocks and thighs. Again, this had the added benefit of acting as a stabiliser.

So, there you have it, who is to say that fat is all bad. Evolution certainly doesn’t!

Eat the Season

PORK AND PEACH KEBABS These are great on the BBQ but if the weather is not on your side, they're just as delicious in the grill!

Method

• Soak eight wooden skewers in cold water for at least five minutes.

• Cut the pork into large cubes, then halve and stone the peaches and cut them into chunks.

• Grate the zest from half the lemon and squeeze out the juice. Reserve one tbsp of the juice, then mix the remainder with the zest and honey.

• Thread the pork and peach slices alternately onto the skewers.

• Brush all over with the honey and lemon mix, then grill or barbecue for 10-12 mins, turning regularly, until cooked.

• Separate the lettuce leaves and mix with the watercress.

• Whisk the reserved lemon juice with the olive oil, mustard and a little seasoning.

• Toss with the salad leaves and serve with the kebabs.

big thank you to everyone locally who supported this year’s Read to Succeed, now in its third year. Together we raised more than 2000 new books, so every Year 4 child in North East Cambridgeshire and many Year 5s received their own book to keep and enjoy over the summer holidays.

Last year, the campaign resulted in a 50 percent increase in children taking part in our local libraries Summer Reading Challenge which involves reading six books over the summer break with the free book counting towards their total. You may have seen some of the posters around town. If you know any primary school children, please encourage them to attend their local library to take part as we have a range of fantastic prizes including:

FENLAND EX-SERVICEMEN AND WOMEN ARE HONOURED Ex-servicemen and women from across Fenland were honoured when a special service in recognition of national Armed Forces Day was held in Whittlesey.

The High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire, Dr Andrew Harter CBE, presented HM Armed Forces Veterans Badges to more than 30 military personnel when Fenland District Council held a Veterans Day Commemoration Service.

More than 100 people gathered at Whittlesey’s St Mary’s Church for the moving celebration, which paid tribute to Britain’s armed forces and their families and recognised the enormous contributions and sacrifices that have been made, past and present.

Conducted by Reverend Nigel Whitehouse, the service saw almost every branch of the wider forces family represented. There were veterans of the Army, Navy and Royal Air Force, as well as submariners, marines and special forces. There were regulars, territorial, reservists, auxiliaries and Merchant Navy.

Dr Harter said it was a “huge honour and privilege” to present HM Veterans Badges during a year of significant anniversaries – the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War; the 100th anniversary of the Royal Air Force, and the 75th anniversary of Operation Chastise, more famously known as the Dambusters raid.

Chairman of Fenland District Council Cllr Mrs Kay Mayor said: “We are proud to be able to honour our veterans at this service, with 34 being presented with their Veterans Badges here today. A further 11 who were unable to attend have been sent their badges together with a letter of thanks. On behalf of us all, I thank you for your service to Crown and country.”

Afterwards, light refreshments were served at Childers Sports and Social Club.

YOUR MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR Hello, I a m delighted to be writing my first article for Discovering Whittlesea.

During my first few months as Mayor of Whittlesey my diary has been very busy, and I have attended many civic functions and events. I am very honoured and proud to be representing the town and villages, supported by my husband Robert.

One of my highlights during these first few months has been meeting and speaking with many schoolchildren from the four local primary schools. I recently attended an excellent inter-school girls football festival at New Road School which showcased school sports and healthy activity at its best. What a fun afternoon was had by all.

I also had the pleasure of welcoming schoolchildren from Alderman Jacobs School to the Whittlesey Town Council meeting in June. The schoolchildren sat around the council table along with local councillors and were able to see local democracy and decision-making happening in Whittlesey. Perhaps one day one of those children could be a future Mayor?

Whittlesey Town Council has invited schoolchildren from all four local primary schools to put forward suggestions of possible names for our new town council office in Queen Street which will be officially opened next year. I am looking forward to seeing the suggested names and hope all the schools will participate in this project.

I hope you will enjoy the third of the very successful Music Festivals on the Buttercross on Sunday, August 19th from 2pm-6pm organised by Whittlesey Town Council.

Then we have the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday, September 9th, a fantastic showpiece day for the town of family entertainment, attractions and activities. Please say hello if you see me on the day.

Lawn Care Advice for Dry Weather

What a year for lawns! Many endured months of what seemed like endless rain and were covered in snow for periods of March. Now they’re having to cope with no rain and baking temperatures. Quite simply a year of two extremes.

Let’s answer some of your common questions…

Q: Should I mow the lawn in this dry weather?

A: If it’s dry and not growing then don’t mow. If there is some growth, or it’s unsightly with tufts of growth here and there, then only trim the tops of the leaf. Try and keep the height to 50mm (two inches).

A: Yes, the main one is the soil condition called “Dry Patch”. This shows as unsightly, dead looking patches that remain when the rest of the lawn has recovered. This is where the soil has become water repellent (hydrophobic) and is therefore unable to absorb and retain water to sustain the grass plant.

Your Garden

August Gardening Tips As I am writing this, we are going through one of the hottest and driest periods we have had for a long time, and I am having to make daily trips to water my young plants and seedlings. However, at the moment, my allotment is looking really promising, and I have had a lot of really tasty mangetout peas. Trips to the allotment or vegetable plot will be more about watering and harvesting than planting, and to keep the weeds at bay, (which in the drier months should be less prolific), a regular hoeing should be sufficient. To retain precious moisture, it can help to add mulch around your crops to prevent excess evaporation, preferably immediately after it has rained.

August is mainly about harvesting and enjoying the produce you have nurtured over the past few months, but there are still one or two crops that you can sow, mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ), and a last batch of carrots and turnips. However, as you harvest your crops and create some space, you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli, Brussels sprouts and kale. Cabbage seeds can be planted in a temporary bed or in pots or modules - remember to cover them with nets to keep off the birds and caterpillars. Strawberry runners that have been potted can be transplanted into a sunny, fertile spot. Keep them well-watered, and planting them through weed suppressant material should help keep the moisture in and the soil warmer.

Other jobs for this month include: • Pruning gooseberry and currant bushes.

• Cut to the ground all raspberry canes that have borne fruit this year and tie in the new green canes that will produce next year’s fruit.

• Continue pinching out tomatoes and don’t forget to provide support for the plants as they become more heavily laden - also for cucumbers, peppers and even fruit trees.

• Keep earthing up potatoes to prevent the tubers being exposed and also brassicas to support unsteady stems.

• Dig over any spaces that have been left from harvesting crops, where you could grow ‘green manure’, such as clover or vetch, which will provide nitrogen for the soil, or alfalfa, cress or mustard which will help break up the soil.

• If you wish to store garlic onions and shallots, they will need to be thoroughly dried out and this can be achieved by lifting them carefully and laying them on the ground in the sun or spreading them out on racks. They can then be strung and hung, but not in the kitchen as the atmosphere is too moist; somewhere cool and dry is advisable.

• Pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy; you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year.

In addition, there is a vast array of stalls, and the schools’ art exhibition in the Whittlesey Christian Church where there will be a superb display of artwork from local schools. There’s plenty of activities for all the family including rides for the children (some of which are subsidised), free face painting and the ever-popular puppet shows and so much more. Weather permitting, there will be a World War II flypast where the crowds will be treated to the Spitfire gracing the skies on the day.

VINTAGE VEHICLES AT THE WHITTLESEY FESTIVAL With just over a month to go, plans for the Whittlesey Festival on Sunday, September 9th are fully underway.

Now celebrating its 11th year there are plenty of attractions that bring thousands of visitors from far and wide on the day. One of the many highlights are the vintage vehicles, where approximately 120 cars and motorcycles will be on display along Market Street and Broad Street.

With such a variety of models ranging from the 1920s’ Morris Oxford Cabriolet, Austins and Fords from the '30s and '40s, together with more modern ‘specials’ (hot rods), there’s guaranteed to be many people reminiscing about the cars their fathers or grandfathers used to drive.

Some of the vehicles are unique to this event and there’s the rare opportunity to see the Gilbern which has been totally restored by retired racing mechanic David Nicholson. Andy Simpson, who organises this aspect of the festival, said: “The display is enjoyed by both the public and the exhibitors who get immense satisfaction in showcasing their pride and joy. We thank them all for their support and look forward to seeing everyone in September.”

Whether you are interested in classic cars or not, there is certainly plenty to do with a full programme of music, dance, and entertainment throughout the day. Headline acts this year include The Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band, Peterborough Highland Band and the return 30

GERMAN VISITORS SAY AUF WIEDERSEHEN Fenland Twinning Association has bid ‘auf wiedersehen’ to its German friends following a fun-packed visit to the district.

Among the highlights of their visit was a day-trip to Norfolk, which included seal watching at Blakeney and a steam train ride on the North Norfolk Railway from Sheringham to Holt.

Guests also visited Wisbech to see the Rose Fair and Peckover House and took a trip to Ely, while others enjoyed time with their host families.

There was also a dinner dance at Childers Sports and Social Club in Whittlesey, with music by the One Eyed Cats, and a barbecue at Gorefield Sports Pavilion and Community Centre.

Pre-nuptial Agreements - The Insurance Policy for Marriage

We don’t think twice about paying for car insurance, we hope we will never need to use it, but in the event of a breakdown or a collision we are grateful for the cover it provides and for the hassle it spares us. So why don’t we take a similar, insurance-based approach to marriage?

In the unfortunate event of a marriage breakdown, the courts have considerable discretion to determine the financial matters. The court will look to the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 and consider factors such as the parties’ ages and earnings before making orders regarding the family home and pension funds.

Having a pre-nuptial agreement in place can help remove the uncertainty that accompanies financial proceedings. A ‘pre-nup’ is an agreement in which a couple set out which of them owns certain property and how they would like assets to be divided should they later divorce. This can be particularly valuable where the couple have previously been married to others and wish to safeguard assets for their respective children, or where one of the parties’ families are gifting or loaning money for a home and wish this to be protected.

No agreement will override the 1973 Act nor prevent a judge from deciding on an appropriate division of assets, but it will be considered as a relevant circumstance of the case. The Supreme Court in a case called Radmacher v Granatino (2010) said that pre-nups should be upheld if they are freely entered into by each party with a full appreciation of its implications unless it would be unfair to hold the parties to the agreement in the circumstances. An example of this would be when the agreement would not meet the needs of any children of the family.

In order to satisfy this, and to be given serious consideration by the court, there are various safeguards which should be in place when a couple enter into such an agreement. To avoid concerns regarding undue pressure, agreements should not be made within the 28 days preceding the marriage ceremony. Furthermore, to ensure that both parties are making a fully informed decision, they should collect and exchange financial documents, such as bank statements, so that it is clear what their respective financial positions are and what they could be entitled to in the case of a divorce. Each party should also receive independent legal advice so they can fully understand the consequences of entering into the agreement.

It may seem an unromantic topic to discuss but having a pre-nuptial agreement in place can save parties money and stress if the marriage does break down in the future. Couples will obviously hope that they will never need to rely on it, but as with car and home insurance, simply knowing that it is there ‘just in case’ can bring peace of mind.

What Impact Might Brexit Have On Personal Finances?

My view is that much will depend on whether the UK economy grows or contracts – this is a matter of speculation at the time of writing, but some of the following might be helpful indicators: Employment Unemployment rates are lower than a year ago (4.8% v 5.0% – Office of National Statistics).

House Prices There is no evidence of property prices falling or significant increases; maybe supply and demand is more important because materials and labour are impacted less by Europe than some other areas of our economy (Halifax House Price Index).

Travel Flight prices from budget airlines are expected to rise unless a deal can be reached on travel routes, plus the impact of currency fluctuations.

Flight delay compensation – Up to €600 compensation could be scrapped because it is a European arrangement.

Are You Going to University This Year?

I’ve had a number of people in the past few weeks asking how they should go about choosing a new laptop for their son/daughter who will be starting university this autumn. My usual advice has been to consider the following points: • Try to keep it as lightweight as possible. Your son or daughter will be lugging it around between classes, as well as to and from uni every day, so the lighter the better!

• Have a back-lit keyboard, if possible. It is not unusual for students to be burning the midnight oil in darkened rooms or amphitheatres, so a back-lit keyboard is a very helpful feature to aid typing in those conditions.

• Whenever possible, choose a laptop that has either an SSD (solid state disk) or an M.2 e-Sata SSD (the latest electronic solid state type of SSD).

Why? Most laptops have a normal HDD (hard disk drive) that consists of spinning platters inside the case, with some very delicate moving parts that do not take kindly to being knocked and bumped whilst working.

Even the slightest damage to these internals can cause data loss. With an SSD or the M.2 SSD they are, effectively, a solid chunk of memory that will withstand being knocked and bumped without any fear of data loss. Another difference between an ordinary HDD and an SSD, is that the SSD will operate at speeds up to six times faster than the ordinary HDD. The M.2 SSD, in turn, operates at least twice as fast as the normal SSD.

• Next to consider is the RAM. If possible, choose a laptop that uses DDR 4 RAM as opposed to DDR 3. Like an SSD, DDR 4 is exponentially faster than DDR 3. With regard to the amount of RAM, the more the better! You should aim for a minimum of 8GB, and 16GB if it remains affordable.

• The last thing to consider is the processor and speed (measured in GHz). An Intel i5 will operate and handle computations far, far better than an Intel i3 – providing it is running at speeds above 2.0 GHz.

Solid State Drives I talk above about the speed of SSDs. By installing one of these little beasties in either a laptop or tower, you’ll significantly improve your computer’s speed.

I recently completed an upgrade for a customer (whose HDD had failed completely), who afterwards came back to tell me how much it had improved his computer’s performance. Whereas, prior to the update, he had had to wait about two minutes for the laptop to shut down, and two to three minutes for it to start, it now took a mere twelve seconds to shut down, and less than twenty five to start up! He wished he had done it years previously!

To conclude, my recommendation this month is that for optimum performance, an upgrade to your computer’s HDD is really the best thing to do.

Grass seeds.... know the problems they can cause – by Whittlesey Veterinary Centre

We all like to take our dogs for a run or play in the open fields, but are you aware of the dangers of the grass seed?

What are grass seeds?

Grass seeds come from grasses that have been allowed to grow tall and then the seed heads emerge.

The seeds are found at the top of the grass, growing in size and hardening at the core as it matures. This is the time (grass seeds are loose and dry), when our dogs are highly likely to have a problem. Grass seeds are small with sharp pointy ends, resembling tiny arrowheads, see pictures. The burrs coming off them and the sharp pointy ends are what cause them to get caught up in our dog’s coat, whether it's long or short.

Why should I be concerned about grass seeds?

They easily get caught in our dog’s fur and then burrow through their coat to their skin. In some cases, the seed will go under their skin and travel to other areas of their body. Once they are travelling around our dog’s body they can be very difficult to find.

Common areas for grass seeds to become a problem are between our dog’s toes, their ears, eyes, armpits or nose. When the seed gets caught up in the fur surrounding their ears it will work its way down the ear canal until it reaches their very delicate ear drum, also causing a lot of pain, potential damage to the ear drum, inflammation and possible infection.

If a grass seed goes unnoticed or is left untreated/ unremoved, our dogs can suffer from more serious problems, the loss of an eye, loss of hearing, loss of balance, ulcer/penetration of their eye, spinal, brain, lung and even heart problems.

Which breeds of dogs are at risk from problems of grass seeds?

All breeds of dogs can have problems with grass seeds. However, breeds that are more susceptible include those with longer hair, feathery toes and long-haired ears, such as Spaniels and West Highland White Terriers.

What are the signs that my dog may have problems caused by grass seeds?

In general: • They can become uncomfortable, lethargic and/or have signs of pain 54

• Have sore, swollen, inflamed areas where the seed is • They may be shaking their head or holding it to one side • They can be licking, scratching, biting, chewing, pawing or rubbing the area • They can have a sudden onset of violent sneezing or coughing • They may have discharge from their eye, nose, ears or skin • They can have a decreased appetite What should I do if I think my dog may have a grass seed problem?

If your dog is licking or chewing at a particular area of their body and you are concerned that a seed may be present, you should contact your vet as soon as possible.

Should I attempt to remove the grass seed?

Unless the grass seed is just in their fur and has not entered their skin, removing it yourself is NOT recommended. Apart from it being very painful for your dog and you run the risk of them possibly biting you, it is very easy to leave parts of the grass seed in your dog. We would always advise you to seek your veterinary surgeon’s advice and service, to avoid potential future problems occurring for your dog.

With all this in mind, the potential serious complications and to avoid unnecessary trauma and sedation for your dog, prevention is key.

So how can I prevent my dog from having problems with grass seeds?

Trim the hair around their ears, paws, groin area and armpits very short during the summer and autumn, minimising the risk of the seeds sticking to their fur and burrowing into their ears or skin.

Always, check your dog's body all over straight away after every walk in areas where there are grass seeds and remove any seeds that are attached to their fur.

Avoid walking in areas of long grass with grass seeds present and do not allow your dog to chew or eat grass with seed heads on it.

If you have any suspicions that your dog may have a grass seed, seek veterinary attention immediately for your dog.

LOCAL RUNNERS GRADUATE Thorney Running Club, which despite its name is based in Whittlesey and holds most of its events in the town, has recently has recently been running a ‘Couch to 5km’ programme.

It has had more than 40 total beginners progress from 60 seconds of running to up to 30 minutes of running over a 10-week period. A graduation run was due to be held in July with all graduates receiving a medal, goodie bag and lots of selfconfidence!

This has been the third year the club has lead this programme, and has graduated more than 100 local runners, helping them to improve their fitness and reach their goals.

The club is holding a five-mile race and 3k fun run on Sunday, August 19th in Thorney!

FORENSIC SCIENCE TO BE EXPLAINED Whittlesey Ladysmith W.I’s next meeting is being held on Tuesday, August 14th when the topic will be ‘Forensic Science Explained’

by Leisa Jayne Nichols-Drew and the group will compare television drama to the real thing.

There will also be a finger-painting competition as well as a seasonal cookery and craft contest when members can display their skills and talents.

WHO'S THAT? - by Dave Bailey

This month we look at ‘depping…’

No, not standing in for a cast member in Pirates of the Caribbean 9, but helping out a band/group in crisis.

The structure of any team can be thrown into chaos by any number of things or events most of which are unexpected and others that are clearly avoidable.

As a performer, the delight of joining together with other people to form a duo, trio, band or even becoming a member of an orchestra is usually exciting. The musical bond that develops is like the links in a chain and holds the performance together. After a while, and sometimes many rehearsals, the art of playing and performing becomes seamless and even the introduction of new material appears effortless. However, the loss of a link or band member, temporary or permanent, can sometimes really throw even the well-rehearsed of teams.

To the rescue, like a musical Virgil from Tracy Island, strolls the ‘dep’. Thankfully, cover bands perform similar set lists and apart from key tempo changes the structure of the songs remain similar and often local musicians will pop up in the most unexpected places replacing various band members and not always on the instrument you would expect.

Injury, flu and accident have been responsible for quite a few during the recent winter with surprising regularity. Semi-pro and amateur outfits usually have full-time day jobs and the commitment to the firms’ needs will often conflict with a gig. Bands also regularly lose members through permanent moves to other outfits or relocation with work, marriage etc.

The major stumbling block for deps tends to be bands that perform mostly original songs that AU GUS T 2 018

require at least a run through of intro, verse, chorus and outro. Bands that have members that are often unavailable tend to use regular deps as the need to replace becomes more frequent. There are also a number of local musicians who perform in a number of bands as a full-time member. Often performing original music one night and then switching to covers or a different set list of selfpenned songs the following. It is very common to see local musician Dave Smith on drums with one band and lead guitar with another on the same weekend – you can catch Dave playing on the Market Square with Children of the Revolution on August 19th at 2pm.

The benefits from ‘depping’ are many, with adaptability being the number one. Switching between bands or even instruments boosts confidence and playing standards, all of which helps to improve knowledge of phrasing, song structure, timing and arrangements.

As a guitarist, attendance at one of the many open acoustic sessions, where joining in is encouraged, not only adds to the evening, it is also a good inroad to performing with other musicians and provides the opportunity to try new material.

The monthly songwriters’ evening at the Boat Inn hosted by Steve Gibbs pulls together a number of performers from a wide range of genres to collaborate, write songs and play them together.

It is held on the second Monday of the month at 8pm.

Club Spotlight

Coates Women’s Institute

C

oates Women’s Institute was re-formed in 2011. It is affiliated to the National Federation of Women’s Institutes whose motto is ‘Inspiring Women’.

The federation is a rich source of experiences, knowledge and skills passed down through generations and updated daily by its website.

We meet on the first Wednesday of every month in Coates Public Hall with the exception of January when we have no meeting but often meet for a meal or outing.

A programme of events is planned for the year.

Activities include speakers from charities or with special interests or skills and a variety of craft activities. In the next few months we have a speaker on the suffrage movement, estate planning, a flower arranging workshop, quiz night and Christmas customs and folklore.

At each meeting we run a competition for members. This year members bring objects beginning with different initial letters and these are judged by our guest speaker.

There is an opportunity to have refreshments and a chat with other members. Additional outings, activities and speakers are advertised such as whist tournaments, darts and scrabble, visits to places of interest and literary lunches and members can sign up to go on these.

Information about the national campaigns is available for members to read about and discuss issues that are important to them. This year we hope to be raising awareness about provision of 62

support for mental health issues and demonstrating a better understanding of people’s needs.

Throughout the year we run stalls at Coates Village School, the Motorcycle Rally on Coates Green and coffee mornings at Holy Trinity Church.

Each year we take part in the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary’s Church, Whittlesey and those members who enjoy crafting participate in decorating the tree as well as meeting to create and share crafting ideas once a month.

Additional outings for members, friends and families have been organised and these have included pork pie making at Melton Mowbray, visits to Abbots Ripton Garden Show, Peckover House, greyhound racing and a visit to a garden in the National Garden Scheme.

We welcome members aged from 18 upwards and would love to have some younger ladies become members. We meet at 7.30pm-9pm in the hall.

There is a membership fee, but you are welcome to come as a guest to see if you would enjoy it.

We would like to offer you this opportunity to be involved in any way that suits you – whether that is socialising, learning new skills or joining in with campaigns. We are not only Jam and Jerusalem – we provide a supportive social network which is welcoming and friendly, and we look forward to welcoming some new members in the near future.

Whittlesey Table Tennis Club

The Olympic sport, table tennis, and Whittlesey Table Tennis Club showcased in the Peterborough Heritage Festival

O

n the weekend of June 16th and 17th the Peterborough Heritage Festival was held in Peterborough city centre. I was asked by the Peterborough Chinese Association to showcase table tennis as an Olympic sport during the festival as the Chinese culture was especially featured.

As a qualified table tennis coach and a member of the Whittlesey Table Tennis Club, I thought it was about time to showcase table tennis to inspire the next generation as a legacy from the London Olympics 2012. Equipped with only a single table tennis table, (couldn't fit in two full-size tables when the Cambridgeshire County Council kindly sent a Vivaro transit van to transport it to the Queensgate Centre for overnight storage), and a table tennis robot, my son, James Hau, and I attended the festival at 9.30am on June 16th to find numerous stalls and activities already set up for the everincreasing public attendance. To our horror our promised pitch and tent/gazebo and electrical supply for the robot were nowhere to be found and given the windy conditions – although the sun was shining gloriously – we knew there would be challenges ahead!

Further interest soon followed, with a continuous influx of experienced players and beginners wanting to join the evergrowing queue to play table tennis, including foreign visitors wanting to “beat the coach” (me!) or “beat the kid” (James) in a game of table tennis.

WTTC kindly printed 200 flyers to hand out to the public; hopefully, they will inspire our visitors to join our club or another one near where they live and start/re-establish playing table tennis. By the end of the busy weekend we had a handful of the flyers left. I can safely confirm that we shall be seeing a number of our visitors again in the near future!

History

The 1902 Peace Day in Whittlesey – by Jen Barback, Curator of Whittlesey Museum

M

ay 31st, 1902 marked the signing of a peace treaty to end the Anglo-Boer War of 1899-1902, also known as the Second Boer War.

The Boers/Afrikaners were descendants of the original Dutch settlers of southern Africa. The war had been fought in South Africa between the South African Republic and the Dutch ‘Republic of the Orange Free State’, on the one side, and the British Empire on the other.

Peace Day marked both republics becoming self-governing colonies of the United Kingdom under the British Crown: this was considered to finally cement the Empire, which had been in intermittent conflict with the Boers for 35 years.

In the Peterborough Advertiser a local journalist described his own reaction to the peace news as: “I felt like calling every man “old chap” and every girl “my dear” – like giving money away – like endowing the Infirmary – making a concertina of my hat – calling on the Dean – shouting “Hurrah” at Dr. Walker’s – I say I only FELT like all that. Then we duplicated the telegram, and displayed it, and enlarged it, and circulated copies of it, and re-read it, and rejoiced about it, and nearly went mad over it.”

However, “it was not until Monday evening that any inkling of the good news reached Whittlesey.

We all retired to rest on Sunday quite unconscious of the peals of bells, the rocket firing, and the cheering of our neighbours at Peterborough, and it was not until the London morning papers came into the town that we knew the good news.

“Then Whittlesey rose to the occasion as Whittlesey can. Banners and streamers fluttered from almost every house in the city, so that the town within an hour or two assumed all the appearances of having been well decorated under an organised system. Flags floated in the breeze from all the public buildings, including the Public Hall,

St. Andrew’s Church, the Conservative Club, etc. The Town Band turned out promptly and assembled on the Market Place by about 9.15, where having first played the National Anthem they then paraded the streets playing lively airs.

“On the children assembling for school they were all given a day’s holiday. At the Board Schools the children after hearing the news and having received the intimation that they were to have a holiday, assembled in the streets outside the school. Many of them had gone to school armed with small flags, others procured them at very short notice, and while waving these flags they sang “Rule, Britannia,” and “God Save the King,” and then paraded the streets in a body shouting and singing and waving their manycoloured flags.

“The Bells of St. Mary’s Church are undergoing repairs, and could not therefore be pealed, but the bells of St. Andrew’s were pealed, and ‘fired’ with vigour.”

War memorials were swiftly placed in cathedrals throughout the country, including a memorial plaque in Ely Cathedral and a set of six inscribed tablets and a stained-glass memorial window dedicated to the Northamptonshire Regiment (58th) 2nd Battalion over the western door of Peterborough Cathedral.

AJS CELEBRATES… Finally, the day arrived… we were able to access our results! After seven years of hard work, Alderman Jacobs School’s current Year 6 and their teachers finally got recognition for all their efforts.

Mrs Carlisle said: “These are the most successful results we have had in school for many years and are a clear indication of our school’s journey, first to good, and now beyond.”

First indications are that 90 percent of the present Year 6 met the age-related threshold in reading with 86% meeting the same milestone in maths and 90% in writing. The grammar, punctuation and spelling also reached high levels with 85% meeting the threshold.

“These results are not only good for our families and staff but are also a positive for the town itself!” added Mrs Baker who has been at the school for some years and is a local resident.

Next year the school opens its first nursery places and looks forward to increased potential within the children.

Staff from Fenland District Council and dedicated volunteers have been delivering educational recycling activities to pupils from schools across the district as part of the council’s Getting It Sorted campaign.

Youngsters have been learning how to reduce, reuse and recycle as part of the initiative and taking part in a popular recycling story competition to win a year’s free recycling service for their school.

Cllr Peter Murphy, the council’s portfolio holder for the environment, who helped judge the competition entries, said: “We were blown away by the hundreds of entries received and were presented with a tough task when choosing the winners!

“The competition was a great way of encouraging young people to think about how to be responsible with rubbish and helps them learn valuable recycling lessons they can use not only at school but also at home too!”

SCHOOLCHILDREN’S RECYCLING LESSON More than 5600 Fenland schoolchildren have been learning how to recycle as part of a district-wide initiative to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and polluting our environment.

HELP THE HELPER There are thought to be approximately 175,000 children under 18 years in the UK providing unpaid care within their family. These young carers provide personal care, assistance or support to another family member on a regular basis, carrying out significant or substantial caring tasks and assuming a level of responsibility which is inappropriate to their age. These caring tasks can involve physical or emotional care or taking responsibility for someone’s safety or well-being.

The impact of taking on an inappropriate caring role can mean young people miss out on life chances, personal and physical development and educational and social opportunities. It can result in underachievement or absenteeism from school, as well as mental or physical health problems.

Research has shown that, for a range of reasons, young carers are often hidden and their needs and those of the person for whom they are caring are

only identified when there is a crisis. Even then, the extent of their caring role and the impact that it has on their own development, may not be recognised quickly or fully assessed.

All young carers can need emotional support, but some are particularly vulnerable due to the nature of their caring responsibilities. In particular, young carers who care for parents who have mental health challenges can have more complex emotional support needs of their own. In a recent survey, talking to someone was highlighted as being helpful in terms of coping with the emotional stress of caring. For some, this was a friend or a teacher, with many saying that they would only talk to someone in private and if they inspired confidence and trust. Do you know a young carer who needs support?

EACH LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO PUT IN THE FRAME AT WHITTLESEY

A charity’s popular volunteer recruitment drive – that sees people add themselves to novelty frames such as the one pictured – has been relaunched after great success last year.

Be a Name in our Frame aims to get people helping out at one of the 32 East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) shops across the region.

EACH relies heavily on volunteers to run its shops, that collectively raise more than £900,000 towards the vital care and support the good cause provides for children with life-threatening conditions and their families.

Last year EACH ran Be a Name in our Frame twice, in May and October, with 97 people signing up to help its shops.

Jeni Baines, EACH Shop Manager, said: “We really appreciate the hard work of every single one of our volunteers, but we can always use more help to keep our shop running and I’m sure there are others like Sue and Sharon.

“We find volunteering is a two-way process. Whilst as a charity we gain from the gift of their time, our volunteers make friends and learn new skills, too.”

For both families accessing care and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. The charity has to generate 84 percent of the money it needs to operate and relies on public support to continue its service.

Church Matters

Praising the Support of Friends We all know that sinking feeling when the heating stops working and the panic when we realise that the boiler has given up altogether. We have to sort out the budget to see if we can afford the repairs or replacement. Then comes the question of how long will it take? Who can we employ to do the work? We know the relief that we feel when repairs are carried out, the heating is back on and the bill is paid.

With the use of our parish churches there are similar responsibilities for repairs and maintenance. Each parish church depends upon local financial support to fulfil these duties. Depending on the nature of the work there may be limited grants available from various groups. There is no direct state funding.

Our four churches depend upon the generosity of local people. The monies come from the generous giving of congregations, legacies and sometimes donations in memory of the deceased at a funeral.

St. Mary’s and St. Andrew’s churches also have a friends’ organisation and we are grateful for their fundraising efforts and tireless support. We thank The Friends of Holy Trinity for their support over the years. Our churches are well maintained because of your support.

The Friends of St Andrew’s recently contributed £3500 towards floor repairs in the church. The Friends of St Mary’s are currently funding the work required on the spire to secure grills on the windows to prevent the pigeons getting in. The presence of the pigeons in the spire has resulted in mess in the bell chamber which will have to be cleared away.

This is all specialist work and once completed will mean that the bells can be rung again manually.

Up until now we have been unable to use the ringing room because of the cloud of dry pigeon mess that descends when the bells were rung.

All should be resolved in the next few weeks.

Who do You Turn to in Your Hour of Need?

Being a church minister has its joys when you see someone who was in complete despair discover a new meaning to life; sadness when facing someone whose life and emotions are in a jumbled mess and desperate to make sense of what was happening.

In my inexperienced days I used to think they were looking for some amazing words of wisdom.

Then I read how Jesus was repeatedly “moved with compassion”, (the word literally means ‘to ache deep inside’), I then discovered the value of giving someone hope through compassion, understanding and lifting their eyes to see a power beyond that of human limitations.

I grew up in a home of eight children where parental love was in abundance, but money was

not. Then 50 years ago, the mother we all loved, was diagnosed with bowel cancer and sent home to die. We were told the cancer would ultimately block the bowel, with all its obvious pain and dreadful consequences.

During a preaching engagement in Kristiansand, Norway the local police came to the church and informed me of my mother’s death. That night, thinking her death had been in the manner we had been told I could not understand why God would have allowed that to happen to such an amazing woman.

That was to be the first time I had ever thought of giving up the ministry and my faith. But come the morning, God had filled my life with an incredible peace. On contacting home, I discovered she had passed away peacefully in her sleep.

You don’t have to face desperate situations alone, you’ve nothing to lose in coming for a chat.
