EXCITING NEWS FROM THE WHITTLESEY CONCERT BAND Over the winter there have been a few exciting changes for the band. Firstly, you may have noticed our name change! As a growing band we felt the title ‘Ensemble’ no longer suited us, and our new name ‘Whittlesey Concert Band’ is much more reflective of who we are. One online source defines a concert band as “a performing ensemble whose repertoire includes original wind compositions, transcriptions/ arrangements of orchestral compositions, light music, popular tunes and concert marches.” Many of these we have in our growing library. In the near future, we will be looking for a new logo and banners to display on our music stands. Another exciting change is the appointment of our new Musical Director, Kevin Mackie.

Kevin has been playing brass since the age of eight and graduated to the euphonium soon after. He has played with several championship section brass bands, most notably the Jaguar Land Rover and Ratby Cooperative Bands, and has been involved with military bands since 1990; he was Vice Chair of the RAF Voluntary Band Association for twenty years before his retirement from the RAF five years ago. He is currently Deputy Bandmaster and principal euphonium for the RAF Wyton Area Voluntary Band, and an established soloist and performer. At present, we are planning a spring concert on the theme of ‘Around the British Isles’, incorporating music from many genres. We’ll also be playing in Wisbech for their Armed Forces Day in June. We’re always on the lookout for new members to join our musical family, so why not pop along and give us a try? We meet every Thursday at the Methodist/ United Reformed Church in Whittlesey from 7.45pm to 9.15pm. Feel free to get in touch at whittleseywind@gmail.com or www.whittleseywindensemble.com. You can also check us out on Facebook for recent pictures and upcoming events!
