Welcome to your February issue...

B

eing a leap year makes 2024 particularly significant, especially if you’re that lady wondering if “he” will ever get round to the customary getting on to his bended knee and slipping that engagement ring on to your finger! Ladies, remember that you can beat him to it on February 29th this year… fellas, watch out! We’re only just into a new year but we’re already hearing that 2023 was the hottest on record. Thinking of extreme heat brings me neatly on to dear old St Valentine, whose day we celebrate this month. May the happiness resulting from sharing those flowers, perfume, chocolates and so much more (hint, hint, Chris!) with a loved one remain, even when things might get a bit tricky in the future… especially when the snow, and even more heavy rain, comes along to spoil our fun!

Claire x

Like most people, I have a daily routine and mine includes walking my dog early in the morning. Whatever the weather, we are out of the door shortly after 7am for a four to five-mile hike around town. As part of our daily walk, we invariably meet up with the usual suspects who share our determination to take to the streets come rain, wind or – very rarely – snow. However, two things have become apparent recently. One, there are a lot of fair-weather walkers who are easily put off by inclement weather, and two it is gradually but reassuringly getting lighter in the morning. I dress very much for the weather on our daily excursion and recently this has meant that I have started to wear a ‘hoodie’ to save my ears from freezing off in the sub-zero temperatures. It keeps me warm but makes me look like a ‘Mad Monk.’ However, frankly I don’t care as I can’t stand wearing decent clothes and getting them soaked or dirty when out with my four-legged pal. As for my walking companion, he always looks great in his sleek black suit...

Your Garden

L

et’s hope that your allotment or vegetable patch has had time to dry out so that you can prepare the beds ready for sowing in March.

Warming up the beds will pay dividends by using cloches, straw-based mulches, or plastic sheeting. If you have clay soil, spread a mix of organic matter and grit over the surface and dig it in to open the structure; avoid treading on the soil especially when wet, by laying wooden planks to walk on, or even consider creating raised beds. Make sure that you have got all your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. One vegetable that will be more flavoursome if kept in the dark is forced rhubarb. Once you see the crowns starting to develop, choose a well-established crown, remove any debris or leaves, add a layer of mulch, and then cover with a bucket or large pot without any holes (cover any holes with black tape.) You can increase the heat by mounding compost or manure around the pot. It should be ready to harvest in 7-8 weeks when the stems are 45-50cms long. Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

4

D I S C O V E R I N G March

• Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground and then mulch. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant; any later and if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted. • Sow seeds indoors: tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, Brussels, sprouting broccoli, spinach. The main problem at this time of year is a general lack of light, so a cheap solution to prevent leggy, drawn seedlings is to cover a piece of cardboard with aluminium foil and place it to the north side of the seed tray, thus reflecting extra light onto the seeds. • If the weather allows, you can start a composting trench for your runner beans, courgettes or pumpkins. Mark out the area you will be planting and then dig a trench 60cm deep which you can then start to add layers of organic kitchen waste, covering each layer with soil.

Happy digging!

ACTING AS AN EXECUTOR

fter the loss of a friend or loved one you may find that you have been appointed by them to act as their executor, or that you are the person responsible to deal with the estate if there isn’t a will (the personal representative).

YOUR DUTIES

It is the responsibility of the executor or personal representative to ensure that the deceased’s estate is correctly administered. This can include such tasks as: • Valuing and gathering in all of the assets, including property, personal effects, bank accounts, shares, premium bonds and more. In order to gather these in you may need to apply for a Grant of Probate or Grant of Letters of Administration. It isn’t always necessary to obtain a grant depending on the size of the estate, but where there is a property in the sole name of the deceased in the estate, it will always be required. • Paying any debts and any tax due such as Inheritance Tax or Income Tax. • Keeping a record of all of the assets and debts, so that you can show these to the beneficiaries when you pay the legacy due to them. • Distributing the estate under the terms of the will or under the Intestacy Rules. If you are the executor/personal representative it is your personal responsibility to ensure that everything is done correctly. This doesn’t mean however that you have to do everything yourself. If you don’t have the time or the ability to deal with

it yourself, you can appoint a professional to assist you. While some people find dealing with the practical matters that arise during the administration process helps them through the grieving process, others can find it difficult to cope with the added pressure when emotions are running high. Instructing a professional to help can give you peace of mind that you have ensured that the wishes set out in the will, or the requirements of the law (where there is no will), are correctly carried out. If there are tensions within the family, it can be helpful to have someone who is not involved in the family dynamic dealing with the estate administration. The professional is then able to deal efficiently with any matters that arise, without being drawn into the emotional issues that might occur between family members. Here at Vine Law, we work with the executor or personal representative to ensure that they get the right level of assistance to help them deal with the estate administration in a way that works best for them. We can help to obtain the Grant of Probate or Grant of Letters of Administration then they deal with realising the assets and distributing the estate or we can deal with the whole estate administration if preferred. If you would like to know more about acting as an executor, the services we offer, or how we can assist you then please contact Cath Collins on (01945) 898090 or email cathcollins@vinelaw.co.uk

PHILIP AT DIAMOND BYTE

BROADBAND BLUES One of the most common things we get called about is broadband faults. We, and other repair guys like us, can fix computers and Wi-Fi issues but can’t repair actual line problems. So, here’s a quick guide on what to check if you have a line fault. 1. Checking your landline phone is working • Plug your phone into the same socket your router is connected to. • Check there’s a dial tone and try to make a call. • If it’s not working, then you probably have a line fault and need to contact your telephone/broadband provider. 2. Turning your router AND your computer off and on again Yes, it’s an age-old IT cliché, it may sound simple, but it really does solve most problems. • Hit the on/off switch on the back of the router. • Shut down your computer or device.

• Wait thirty seconds and turn everything back on again. • If the router’s internet light still flashes amber or red after a few minutes, you need to check the cabling, if there’s no problem there then you probably have a line fault and need to contact your telephone/broadband provider. If you’re using Wi-Fi, and all the right lights are on the router you’ll need to check whether your Wi-Fi is faulty. If you have other devices, are they working correctly? Plug your laptop or device directly into the router using the steps below: 1. Plug one end of the ethernet cable into any of the ethernet sockets on the back of your router (some models may have a different coloured port that’s blue or red, don’t use this one) 2. Plug the other end into the ethernet socket on your device.

If you can access the internet when you plug in, there’s probably a problem with your Wi-Fi, which may be an issue with your computer. If you still can’t connect to the internet via ethernet, then you should phone your internet service provider first. I’ve listed some of the UK’s most popular broadband suppliers' customer help numbers here because without an internet connection they can be a real pain to find. If you have slow connection, you can check your speed using the website www.fast.com. This works on almost all devices such as laptops, pcs, tablets and phones. By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key time for fraudsters aiming to steal your money as well as your heart. ‘Romance fraud’ is one of the top five most reported scams to Action Fraud, and involves people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. Now comes the timely reminder to people who may be looking for love to be extra vigilant, taking measures to ensure their ‘perfect match’ is really who they say they are. In the last financial year, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) received 8,036 reports of romance fraud, with an average loss per victim of £11,500. Men make up 53% of cases and the 65 to 74 age group is the one most likely to be targeted. One of the most high-profile cases is that of Vicky – a victim of Emmanuel Scotts, a convicted, serial romance fraudster who scammed four women out of more than £320,000. In November 2022, Scotts was sentenced to twelve years behind bars. Vicky explains, “They look for your weaknesses and mine is my son and not having his dad around. He made a point of being interested in everything my son did. He praised me constantly on what a great job I was doing, bringing him up on my own, telling me he wanted to take care of me.” Scotts befriended several women on an internet dating site and, after gaining their trust, he persuaded them to “invest” savings and returning small sums of “interest” to extract more money. How to stay safe from romance fraudsters: • Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online. • Be cautious about how much information about yourself you are sharing online and who you are sharing information with. • Speak to your family or friends to get advice. Fraudsters will subtly isolate you for their own purposes. • Profile photos may not be genuine. Performing a reverse image search can find photos that have been taken from somewhere, or someone, else. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

his Holbeach-based firm are establishing a very impressive reputation for the quality of their work and the service they provide, across a wide area of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. This can be clearly confirmed by the huge number of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, www.lincolnshireresindrivesltd.co.uk, but especially on their Facebook pages.

Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends

INVEST IN A WOOD BURNING STOVE AND SAVE MONEY For the savvy homeowner, a wood burning stove isn't just a source of warmth – it's a strategic investment that translates into tangible savings on heating bills.

W

ith rising energy costs, modern stoves offer an economically sound alternative with low fuel consumption, efficiently converting wood into warmth.

At a time where environmental consciousness is paramount, wood burning stoves can provide both low-cost and low-carbon heating. Modern stoves adhere to stringent environmental standards, with significantly lower emissions than older stoves and up to ninety percent less than open fires, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. To maximise the efficiency and environmental benefits of a wood burning stove, it's crucial for stove users to adopt responsible practices, ensuring the sustainability of this age-old tradition. Properly seasoned wood, optimal burning techniques, and regular maintenance are all key factors. Wood burning stoves can be cosy, cost-effective, and conscientious. Environmental responsibility doesn’t have to sit on the back burner.

COMMUNITY

MATTERS

We bring you items of interest for your home and community. If there is something you’d like us to cover or you have something to say please get in touch at: Discovering March, PO Box 164, Bourne PE10 1ET Email: editor.march@discoveringmagazines.co.uk

DO YOU KNOW AN UNSUNG HERO? Do you know someone who goes to great lengths to support others, has fundraised for charity, volunteers tirelessly or has done something remarkable for someone else? Perhaps you know a child or adult who always wants to help others even though they face great challenges, adversity or ill health themselves? Or someone who loves their Fenland town or village and goes out of their way to care for and champion it? These are the people Fenland District Council wants to hear about via nominations for the Pride in Fenland Awards 2024 which celebrate people who have done something, or regularly do something, for the benefit of others. Cllr Susan Wallwork, Fenland District Council’s portfolio holder for community, said: “The Pride in Fenland Awards are a touching celebration of selflessness and community contribution. “We know the district is full of people who care for and do things for others in wonderful ways and we want the opportunity to acknowledge and express our gratitude for what those people have done or continue to do. “We are calling on everyone in Fenland to tell us about the heroes of our communities.”

ARIA COURT HELPS LOCAL CHARITY The Aria Court team has visited FACET to deliver the proceeds of a Christmas Fayre held at the March home. Together, through the collective efforts of Aria Court and the generosity of the wider community, almost £350 was raised for FACET to help its efforts in providing essential training and care for adults with disabilities.

The closing date for nominations is midnight on Sunday, February 11th. All you need do is state why the person you’re putting forward deserves a Pride in Fenland award. Nominations can be made online via the Fenland District Council website at www.fenland.gov.uk/ prideinfenland You can also find a form there to download and print.

The Christmas event was a festive delight, featuring live music, craft stalls, and treats like hot chocolate and homemade shortbread. The generosity of relatives, staff, and local businesses, including Westend DIY, Dominos, Tesco’s, Eastern Promise, Iceland, March Quality Meats, The Barn, and Boyes, played a pivotal role in the success of the fayre. 26

FENS’ RAIL PROJECT SHORTLISTED FOR AWARD Fenland’s Hereward Community Rail Partnership (CRP) has been shortlisted in the 2024 Community Rail Awards for its free sustainable transport tool. The online Think Travel Tool has earned the partnership a shortlisting in the ‘Influencing Positive Change and Sustainability’ category. Now in their nineteenth year, the prestigious awards recognise the organisations and volunteers working across Britain’s rail network to improve stations and increase rail use. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in Swansea on March 18th, 2024. The Hereward CRP commissioned the Think Travel Tool to enable people to compare the impacts and sustainability benefits of different types of transport. It allows users to select start and end points of journeys that are available along the Hereward railway line, which runs through Fenland between Peterborough and Ely. Users can then select different modes of transport for the journey from cycling, travelling by train or bus and different types of car – diesel, petrol, electric and hybrid. The tool then compares the different impacts and benefits of each mode of transport for the selected journey, including environmental impacts such as carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and air pollutants, distance travelled (as different modes of transport take different routes), time taken, cost, health benefits and wider impacts too.

HERITAGE TALKS IN MARCH A series of free heritage talks are being held in March and other Fenland towns, thanks to funding from Arts Council England. The events have been organised by Cllr Elisabeth Sennitt, Chair of Fenland District Council’s Culture, Arts and Heritage Committee. She said: “The idea behind these events is to promote local historical awareness and provide socialisation for Fenland residents who might be chronically lonely during the post-Christmas winter months. All the talks will be an hour long and be followed by a Q&A session to further discussion.”

FREE EXERCISE, WELLNESS AND SOCIAL ACTIVITY SESSIONS Free exercise, wellness and social activity sessions are on offer across Fenland in the New Year. • ‘Pre-fit’ activity sessions for people who have noticed they are limiting their activity or have stopped doing the things because they are getting more challenging. At George Campbell Leisure Centre, City Road, PE15 9LT. Wednesdays, 2pm-3.30pm. £3 per session, book and pay at leisure centre.

As the winter season sets in, it’s crucial to pay extra attention to your furry friend’s joint health. Dogs, like humans, can experience discomfort and stiffness in their joints due to the colder, damper weather. Here are some tips to help care for your dog’s joints during the winter and the benefits of animal physiotherapy in maintaining their health. Firstly, maintain your dog’s exercise routine. Although the weather might be cold, regular, moderate exercise is crucial for joint health. Take shorter but more frequent walks to prevent stiffness. Indoor activities, such as sniffing and searching for kibble or creating obstacle courses, can help keep your dog active. Provide them with a cosy bed to rest on, particularly after outdoor activities. Ensure they are wrapped up warm when out on a walk, to help protect their joints. A warm environment helps in preventing joint stiffness and discomfort. Consider providing joint supplements or adjusting their diet to include foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can aid in reducing inflammation and promoting joint health.

F E BRUA RY 2024

Regular vet check-ups are essential, especially during winter. A veterinarian can advise on specific joint care for your dog, prescribe supplements, and detect any joint issues early on. Consider animal physiotherapy as an integral part of joint care for your dog. Carried out by professionals, physiotherapy helps in relieving joint pain, improving mobility, and preventing further issues. Massage, hydrotherapy, and exercises designed for your dog's specific needs can significantly enhance joint health and overall well-being. Personalised plans aid in improving joint flexibility, muscle strength, and contributing to your dog’s comfort and happiness, particularly in the colder months. In conclusion, by maintaining an active routine, providing proper nutrition, regular vet checkups, and considering the benefits of animal physiotherapy, you can significantly contribute to your furry friend's joint health and overall well-being during the colder months.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO LEARN TO DECORATE?

A

March painter and decorator is giving local householders the chance to learn new DIY skills by offering a series of ‘How to’ courses.

Rick Wollen, who has more than twenty years’ experience, plans to give the lessons in people’s homes so they can carry out their own improvements. He plans to offer advice on painting and wall papering; step-by-step lessons in preparing a room; offer the use of his own equipment and give advice on what equipment to purchase; tricks of the trade; and practical lessons on how to fit coving, all helping to give homeowners the satisfaction of carrying out their own decorating work. He said: “I have been thinking about providing courses for the past six months. My plan is to offer decorating lessons in people’s own homes, covering everything from how to prep and prepare a room through to painting and decorating. “I used to successfully train apprentices in coach building and have a lot of patience when teaching people who want to learn a new skill. My plan is to offer my services at a day rate, say from 8.30am to 3.30pm. Obviously the length of time required to teach people will vary so I won’t have a set module but I expect to be able to teach most people the skills they need in two to three days.” Rick said that although people can learn new skills on YouTube it is not the same as having someone in person showing them how to do it. He added: “I will go through everything stepby-step, giving advice about the importance of sheeting up, rubbing down and how to set up a room for papering etc. I will stress the importance of things like fully taking down curtains or blinds and covering the carpet properly as sometimes people think you don’t need to do it because it is too much trouble, but it really does pay dividends.” 32

D I S C O V E R I N G March

Rick is joined in his RW Home Improvements business by his wife Jan who works three days a week.

Jan didn’t know anything about painting or papering when she started with me, but since I taught her, she is now able to work on her own with confidence. The new ‘how to’ courses will run alongside his usual decorating business with most new customers being attracted via adverts and articles in Discovering March magazine. The company offers all quotes in writing, so there is no misunderstanding, and usually only gives quotes, not estimates so customers know exactly what they are expected to pay. In addition, there are no hidden charges and no VAT, with the cost of materials and labour clearly listed. Rick said: ”It is amazing how many people contact us after reading about the business in the magazine. It really works for us.” RW Home Improvements is based at 27 Breton Avenue, March PE15 9EY. Food & Drink

Here for the Beer:

STROUD BREWERY

T

he Gloucestershire market town of Stroud and the areas surrounding it attract visitors all year round. The Cotswold area is known for its outstanding, picturesque, natural beauty. History tells us that Stroud had woollen mills that were powered by the surrounding rivers, which flowed through the valleys, and Cotswold sheep supplied the wool. During the 19th century, Stroud was well-known for its industrial and trading connections. Some former working mills now offer guided tours. The Walled Garden attracts visitors, as does the Farmers’ Market and the local brewery. Eateries and restaurants provide local, organic produce, incorporated into numerous, very popular dishes. Multi award-winning Stroud Brewery (Est. 2006) is renowned for the productions of exceptional organic craft beers and is now one of Stroud’s major attractions. Their beers include ranges of core, specials and more. TOM LONG (3.8% vol) is a popular organic amber bitter beer – Smooth, malty and citrusy. HOP DROP (4.5% vol) is gluten-free. This much loved, organic pale ale production, I recognised as fruity and hoppy, plus citrusy. BUDDING (4.5%

36

D I S C O V E R I N G March

vol) comes across (to me) as floral and zesty, for this organic, pale ale production.

By Trevor La

ngley

If a stout is required, then BIG CAT (4.5% vol) organic stout does not disappoint in any way. Rich, with chocolate overtones, makes this a very popular selection for stout lovers. ALEDERFLOWER (4.9% vol) organic pale ale, I found to be crisp and with floral notes - another, hugely popular production, from the Stroud Brewery Company. If low alcohol is for you, then EASY PEASY (2.6% vol) organic pale ale ‘ticks many boxes.’ This ‘session ale’ has a floral bouquet and is citrusy, to satisfaction, with flavours from organic elderflowers and lemons. The outstanding efforts and achievements of all staff at Stroud Brewery, are very much appreciated and recognised now further afield, as the word spreads about this exceptional beer producing company. Please view their excellent and very informative website for all details and information. Online ordering is available and easy, and it is most worthy of a visit and highly recommended. Sunflower Hypnotherapy Will Help You Blossom Solution focused hypnotherapy can help with more than you might think – from weight management to anxiety, stress, and sleep difficulties, confidence and much more. Solution focused hypnotherapy is a talking therapy, combining psychotherapy with hypnosis. It’s a kind and enjoyable therapy that focuses on finding the solution to current problems, without the need to look back at the root cause. Suzanne Westbrook, of March-based Sunflower Hypnotherapy, offers a free initial consultation in a relaxed and friendly environment to talk about what you hope to achieve and how hypnotherapy can support you. Suzanne works with adults to support them by taking small steps in a positive way to help reach their desired goals and offers sessions both in-person or online. Hypnotherapy has the great advantage of using trance to enhance the therapeutic work. Trance is a very natural state to be in. Following guided relaxation, the conscious and the subconscious come together, supporting individuals to make positive changes in their lives. Solution focused hypnotherapy is all about providing the tools to deal with life, both with any

current issues but also helping people to learn new ways of dealing with things for any of life’s hurdles. Hypnotherapy works quite quickly, usually around eight-twelve sessions, and is very practical in its approach using the latest research to make this difference in a short period of time. What past clients have said: “Having hypnotherapy has changed my life and outlook in life. I feel I am able to focus on the positives and change my mind frame when I think negatively.” “I more than achieved my goal. I got so much more from hypnotherapy than I was expecting to. I now have the coping methods to deal with my stress and I am able to focus on myself more. The sessions were very calm and relaxing and Suzanne was very professional.” If you would like to find out more about how Suzanne can support you, email info@sunflowerhypnotherapy.co.uk or call 07935 466590 to book a free initial consultation.

Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear Written by Chris Donald, author of ‘Wisbech’s Secret Princess’ and ‘Interesting and Curious Facts of Yesteryear’

SHE WASN’T INTERESTED IN HOUSEWORK... he wasn’t interested in housework... no, leave that to the others! Lilian Ream had one passion in her life and that was... PHOTOGRAPHY.

S

Born in 1877 in West Walton, she started working as a photographer when she was just seventeen, working in various photo studios in Wisbech and she was to end up being known for her photography and to become well known throughout the Fens, leaving more than 100,000 photographs. She married quite late. Did her passion for photography get in the way? It wasn’t until she was twenty-eight that she married Sydney, and two years later, instead of working for others she opened her own studio at No 4, The Crescent with a special darkroom built in the back garden. It was a gamble but it was a gamble that paid off. She did a good business in portraiture and was popular with many dignitaries, as well as others wanting to be photographed. If needed, pictures could be doctored and skin blemishes, disfigurements and wrinkles could be removed! In 1911, aged thirty-four, she gave birth to her first child, a daughter. She needed help to get on with her work so she persuaded her sister, Louie, to move from London to Wisbech to help with the housework. You can tell how well she was doing by the fact that as well as leasing No 4, she could afford to buy next door, No 5. With the outbreak of the First World War, Sydney joined the Royal Naval Air Service at Dover seeing the Channel crossings were safe. Lilian kept photographing. She was an ambitious lady and determined to have no competition. As well as the Crescent properties, she bought the Borough studio in York Row, the Art studio in Alexandra Road, the Imperial Photo Company, the craft shop in Market Street and the Lynn Road Studio where she had first worked. The main hub of the business though was the Borough studio in York Row which was open six days a week and a photograph taken in 1929 shows she 46

had sixteen people working for her. Most of her work still came from portraits as this was before the general public owned a camera. It wasn’t until the 1940s that people started to have their own camera with the coming of the Kodak Brownie box camera. She also worked for two local newspapers, the Wisbech Standard and the Wisbech and Isle of Ely Advertiser, which meant that many events of the time were recorded by her. But, after twenty-five years with Sydney, the marriage finally broke up and she left Wisbech, she left photography and went to Eastbourne. However, this was not the end of the story for at the age of fifty-eight she returned to Wisbech and returned to the business. But then after fifteen more years and at the age of seventy-two she decided finally to retire from the business, retire from photography and move back again to Eastbourne. Her photos show life was a bit different one hundred years ago. Shopping was different, the market was an important place and much busier than it is now. One of Lilian’s photos shows part of the Saturday market with more than 180 people shopping. And another shows the opening of Woolworth’s in 1928 which is now Poundland. But some shopping hasn’t changed, there is a photo of Evisons all those years ago with a big sign saying ‘special offer – big discount – cannot be repeated!’ And in another, there are 48 turkeys hanging outside a butcher’s waiting to be bought. What would health and hygiene have to say about that today? And what would health and safety say about swimming in the Nene and diving off the town bridge, all captured by Lilian and her camera. And finally, a photo she took just over seventyone years ago of a street party celebrating guess what?... the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. And did she ever like doing housework? She died at the grand age of eighty-four. She made her final return to Wisbech and is buried in Walsoken churchyard.

BRINGING CULTURE TO FENLAND... By Steve Barclay MP

W

e have some great examples of culture and heritage in the constituency – magnificent buildings, innovative arts groups and some supremely talented individuals. However, we’ve long recognised that Fenland has lower cultural engagement than it might and there’s more that could be done to support opportunities for local communities and residents to access high-quality experiences. That’s why I’m delighted to see nineteen organisations were successful in gaining support for their activities from the Fenland Cultural Fund. Up to £23,000 was available with arts organisations and individuals able to bid for up to £2000 to progress creativity and cultural offerings to new audiences, drive increased engagement, and build on existing talent. I’m greatly encouraged that forty-two groups submitted bids to the fund and a second round is due to be launched later this year. In a similar vein, I’m looking forward to seeing who the next Fenland Poet Laureates are. The deadline for entry was the end of January and this year, the sixth annual competition, is sure to see some amazing talent championing both poetry and the area we live in. Meanwhile, a series of free heritage talks being held across the constituency are well underway. Thanks to funding from the Government to Arts Council England, the events are designed to promote local historical awareness and provide an opportunity for residents to get together and socialise. Whittlesey talks will be given by London Brickwork archivist Andrew Mortlock and local historian Maureen Watson; Wisbech talks are by local author and historian Diane Carlton Smith; Chatteris talks are by former councillor Alan Melton; and the Friends of March Railway Station will lead the March talks. Tickets are available to book now: Whittlesey: February 6th, March 5th; Wisbech: February 13th, March 12th; March: February 20th, March 19th; Chatteris: February 27th, March 26th. There’s just time to get your nomination in for the Pride in Fenland Awards. Over the years we have heard some inspirational stories and had worthy winners and I have no doubt that once again we will be amazed and grateful to recognise

the people who are heroes in their communities. The closing date for nominations is midnight on February 11th. Nominations can be made online at www.fenland.gov.uk/prideinfenland or printed forms can be found in the Fenland Citizen. It was a pleasure to visit Online Playgrounds in Christchurch to help them celebrate thirty years of trading. They are one of our local success stories, helping put Fenland on the map internationally by exporting to the Middle East, USA and Australia. One of the challenges we face as an economy is to get more businesses to think about exporting further afield and what Online Playgrounds has achieved reflects the work that goes on here day in, day out. Online Playgrounds started as a farm diversification project and makes timber playgrounds on-site using traditionally skilled craftsmen and the latest technology, as well as being the UK supplier for the Danish Ledon steel play equipment, and the go-to website for multibrand spare parts for all types of playground. What they have achieved is something quite notable. Finally, the Energy Secretary of State has until later this month to make a decision about whether to allow an enormous incinerator to be built in Wisbech. I have been against these incinerator plans from the very beginning and will continue to campaign against them. The Planning inspectorate has submitted its recommendation following the public examination last year and in January the Secretary of State issued a letter to various parties asking for further information. The impact of hundreds of thousands of tonnes of non-recyclable municipal and commercial and industrial waste being brought to Wisbech each year would be huge. I will continue to do all I can to oppose it. Photo: Steve Barclay MP with Andrew Sparrow, Online Playgrounds Group MD

Valentine’s Day What’s That All About Then?

W

hen February 14th comes along, we can expect to exchange messages of love through thoughtful cards, flower bouquets, perfume, jewellery, and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate. But why do we celebrate Valentine's Day in the first place, because it hasn’t always been a celebration of love?

Who was St Valentine? At least two men named Valentine could have inspired the tradition. One Valentine was a priest in third century Rome who defied Emperor Claudius II's ban on marriage (he thought it distracted young soldiers), illegally marrying couples in the spirit of love until he was caught and sentenced to death. Another legend suggests that Valentine was killed for attempting to help Christians escape prison in Rome, and that he was the first sender of a “Valentine” message himself while imprisoned, writing a letter signed “From your Valentine.”

50

In the 1300s, it officially became a holiday associated with love At the end of the 5th century, Roman Pope Gelasius officially declared the date of February 14th “St. Valentine's Day.” It wasn't until the Middle Ages, though, that the holiday became associated with love and romance, a tradition that first started from the common belief in France and England that birds started their mating season on February 14th.

The first Valentine was sent in the 15th century The oldest record of a Valentine being sent was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415. One of the lines in the poem read, “I am already sick of love, my very gentle Valentine,” penned while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, aged just twenty-one. People were exchanging cards and handwritten letters to both lovers and friends during the 17th century, but it was in the 1840s that the first Valentine's Day cards were first mass-produced.

However…

Flowers…

Although some historians believe that Valentine's Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14th, others believe that the holiday has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival called “Lupercalia,” which was celebrated in ancient Rome. Dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus, the day was celebrated by sacrificing animals and smacking women with animal hides, a practice that was believed to encourage fertility!

The tradition of giving Valentine's Day flowers dates back to the 17th century, but the act of giving flowers then became a popular trend during the Victorian Era, including on Valentine's Day, with red roses symbolizing deep love.

D I S C O V E R I N G March

…and Chocolates! The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1861. It was created by Richard Cadbury, son of Cadbury founder, John Cadbury, who started packaging chocolates in fancy boxes to increase sales… and the rest (as any dentist or dietician will tell you) is history!

Local History

St Mary's

LYCHGATE By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District Museum

t Mary’s Church in Westry, March was one of three new parish churches built in March, following the division of Doddington Parish in 1856. The parish was formed in 1868 and the church was dedicated in 1873 at a cost of £2500, with seating for two hundred people. Nearly sixty years later it was decided that there should be a suitable gate at the entrance where funeral parties could shelter a coffin until the clergyman's arrival.

A stone-laying ceremony for the new lychgate was conducted on Tuesday afternoon March 8th, 1932, followed by tea in the church hall. The architect was J W Stallebrass and the stonework and brickwork were laid by C Goakes, of Deerfield Road, March. The woodwork of seasoned oak with a roof in keeping with the church roof was constructed by Messrs A Christmas and Sons of St Peter’s Road, March who stated that frequent dressings of oil would tone down the colour of the timber. A good congregation attended the dedication conducted by the rector, Reverend R J P Peyton Burbery during Sunday afternoon service on March 27th, 1932. The first part of the service was held in the church, after which the rector and the choir were proceeded by the congregation to the lychgate. While Sunday school scholars stood to one side, opposite the rest of the congregation, the rector gave great credit to the architect, the builders and the many subscribers. He said that its primary purpose was to give temporary shelter to the mortal remains of those who came to the churchyard for burial. He stated that it would last for centuries. After the dedication, all returned to the church. A collection on that day raised a further £2-8s-10p and it was thought that fund raising and donations would cover the whole cost. FEBRUARY SUNSHINE brings out bees

F

By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group

ebruary can be a depressing month; the days are getting longer but it all seems too slow and everyone has had enough of winter with its heavy rain and strong winds. On top of that this year, if you are paid monthly, you will not be paid for the 29th! However, with a bit of luck there will be an odd glorious sunny day to fill us with joy. As our climate warms, a sunny February day will bring out Buff-tailed Bumble Bees (Bombus terrestris) and Honeybees (Apis mellifera) looking for nectar.

Honeybee on Winter aconite, Eranthis hyemalis

This early in the year few wildflowers are in bloom; white dead-nettle always has a few flowers and coltsfoot will be out. Snowdrops and wild daffodils will also be flowering. In addition, there may be early primroses and lesser celandine. Flowers in our gardens are important and they will attract bees as long as they are in the sun. The early bees are only on the wing in the sun and will not visit flowers even in partial shade, the preferred growing area for snowdrops. Winter flowering heathers (Erica carnea) are low growing spreading shrubs that flower from autumn through to late spring. Luckily erica carnea will grow well in Fenland soil, which is alkaline. Heathers of the calluna, daboecia and most ericacea will only thrive in acid soil. Winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis) occasionally produces flowers in late December but are at their best in February. Early crocus (Crocus dalmaticus) will give a wonderful display on a sunny day but will stay firmly closed if it is cloudy and wet. Being keen gardeners, we make sure there are always some flowers in our garden and these have been our best efforts at winter flowers and on a warm February day the garden can be buzzing with bees. All of these plants have their disadvantages. Erica carnea has white flowers, spreads and needs to be cut back regularly to keep it under control. It is a good, evergreen ground cover plant all year. 56

D I S C O V E R I N G March

Buff-tailed Bumble Bee on Crocus dalmaticus

The winter aconite seeds and spreads, actually quite slowly, but it looks really scruffy as the leaves die off in late spring and early summer. Crocus dalmaticus really has delusions of grandeur and will fill every gap including between paving slabs. Keeping it out of the vegetable patch is a challenge. The leaves appear after the flowers have died and make the whole area where it grows look like a very untidy lawn. Despite these problems it looks stunning in February and the bees love it. Next Gault Wood Work Parties are Saturdays, February 3rd and March 2nd at 10am. If you'd like to support our work at the wood as a volunteer, please contact the Woodland Trust using this email: volunteering@woodlandtrust.org.uk Alternatively, you might like to support the Nature's Calendar project, which focuses on phenology, which is the study of plant and animal reaction to climate change. FIVE WAYS

to look after your mental health this February By Lin Stanton, Debt Coach Manager for Fenland Christians Against Poverty (CAP)

Money and mental health struggles often come as a package. When finances are difficult, our mental health can take a hit, and vice versa, poor mental health can lead to difficulty managing money. As millions of us continue to face challenges when it comes to money, it’s so important that we take steps to look after ourselves and prioritise mental wellbeing. Talk it out When it comes to our finances, we too often feel we must face the problem alone. Many people feel too ashamed or embarrassed to seek help but find that when they finally reach out, things start to change! If you’re struggling with money, open up to someone you trust, or get free help from an organisation like Christians Against Poverty (CAP). You can find out about all the services we offer at capuk.org/help

Write it down Our emotions can easily build up and become too much to bear. Putting your thoughts down on paper can help you process 58

how you’re feeling and provide a healthy outlet for anger, frustration, grief and lots of other emotions.

Sweat it off According to the NHS, physical exercise causes chemical changes in the brain that help to improve our mood. However, you don’t need an expensive gym membership or pricey equipment to do this – walking, running and playing games in the park are all great ways to get a bit more active (and they’re free!)

Cook it up The food we eat affects not only our physical health, but our

D I S C O V E R I N G March

mental wellbeing too. Planning your meals before you head to the shop can help you choose healthier options and cut down on non-essential costs, bringing a little peace of mind. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) provides local groups in communities like yours with lots more guidance on shopping and cooking healthily on a budget. Find out more at capuk.org/help

Know it well Whatever emotions you’re feeling, it’s important to know that they are valid and worth taking seriously. You can honour this by taking the time to get to know your emotions better, learning about what causes you to feel a certain way and why. This might include speaking to a trustworthy source such as Samaritans (call 116123) or SHOUT (text 85258), or asking yourself GP about counselling. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is a UK charity working with more than 800 affiliated churches to deliver debt help, budgeting guidance, support to find work, life skills education and more. Visit capuk.org to find out more.
