At this time of the year, I’m often surprised at just how quickly, within a few weeks, we’ve moved on from those cold, wet mornings, those biting winds and long, dark evenings to something much more appealing.
Blossom is now starting to be on show and our long, hot summer (hopefully!) is nearly upon us. I hope you find the wide range of topics included in this month’s magazine both informative and enjoyable. As ever, many thanks to all of the contributors and advertisers for their hard work and for your continuing support and words of encouragement. Enjoy the month ahead, and best wishes for a happy Easter to you all.
High winds, snow storms, freezing fog, heavy rain and hail with the odd spell of sunshine... we’ve seen all types of weather in Fenland over the past few weeks.
I’ve lost count of the times that part of my day has been spent drying my drenched dog, moving garden furniture and assorted pots back into their rightful position or straining to keep my balance tiptoeing over slippery paths. Hopefully, now with the advent of British Summer Time we may see more of the sun and have a spate of settled weather as 2023 local outdoor activities spring into life.
After months huddled in front of the TV trying to keep warm without breaking the bank by having the heating on too long, it will be great to spend more time outside.
I know it’s only April and we are not out of the woods yet (yes, I do know the saying ‘ne’r cast a clout till May is out’) I’m hopeful that the fickle British weather is kind to us all over the coming weeks.

Deadline details:
Copy deadline for the May issue is Friday, 14th April 2023.
Kellyvision was started back in April of 1983 in a small shop in Broad Street opposite Keshco supermarket by current Managing Director Kelley Shipp. The opening caused such a stir that the road had to be closed by the police while Ruth Madoc of popular television series Hi-de-Hi! fame opened the shop! In fact, some of the children and grandchildren from the opening are still coming into the store today which says a lot about the customer service Kellyvision provides.
Business was so good it moved to Blunts Lane, Whittlesey, and finally to the current location on the corner of Broad Street and Whitmore Street, supplying home entertainment equipment i.e. televisions, videos, hi-fis followed by the brand new invention of satellite television in 1989.
The motto back then was ‘Better because we care’ which still stands with the company today despite larger department stores, supermarkets and the internet all selling electrical products. Like a phoenix from the ashes, Kellyvision survived the devastating fire at its premises in April 2005 which saw it move into a temporary trading address in Market Street for eighteen months while the building was renovated. This move to continue trading was only achieved with the help from other local businesses and friends who all immediately rallied around to help.
Kellyvision has been overwhelmed by the loyalty and support given from both old and new customers over the years, including the continued support of the business which was forced by the Government to close its doors to customers during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21.
Expanding into white goods – i.e. washing machines, refrigeration, cookers, gave Kellyvision the opportunity to be your local onestop-shop. As an independent, Kellyvision prides itself on being able to offer free, friendly advice; something lacking by clicking a button on the internet these days. After noticing that built-in kitchen appliance sales were increasing rapidly, in 2017 Kellyvision took the plunge into kitchen design and planning. This has been a phenomenal success with Director Lee Cochrane taking on most of the new challenge.
As Lee explained: “A lot of customers are now making bigger investments in their own homes, rather than moving. New houses are smaller, therefore customers want clever designs, with integrated kitchen appliances to make the most out of their space. Our kitchen appliance sales have grown vastly over the years so it seemed a natural progression to offer a full kitchen design and installation service.”
The sleek Symphony kitchens complement the showroom’s current stock of goods, which include brands such as Smeg, Bosch, Neff, Siemens, Liebherr and Hotpoint. But if you thought that buying local meant you paid more, then you might be surprised. “We’re actually cheaper than most well-known high street retailers,” Matt Vail explained. “Not only that, we offer better customer care and more competitive warranties.”
So if you are looking to upgrade your home, whether it’s a new television, cooker, fridge or a brand new kitchen, pop into Kellyvision for personal and professional advice and service.
April is a good month to get ahead by sowing seeds indoors or outside in cold frames and under cloches. If you covered your plot over the winter, the soil may well be warm enough to plant and sow certain crops directly outdoors. However, beware of cold nights and frosts, making sure that tender plants are protected.
Aim to get all your potatoes planted by the end of the month – plant out chitted second early potatoes in the first two weeks of the month and maincrop potatoes in the second two weeks. Second earlies and maincrops need more growing space, so plant them about 38cm (15inches) apart and 75cm (30inches) between rows. When the shoots appear, earth up each plant by covering it with a ridge of soil.
If you’re short of space you can always grow them in an old dustbin or similar. Make sure that there is plenty of drainage; bore some holes in the bottom and 10cms up the side, then add grit or hardcore before topping up with good quality compost to approx. 4 inches. Place 5 chitted potatoes on the soil, sprout side up, cover with 4-6 inches of compost, and water. As the shoots appear, cover with compost, leaving the topmost leaves exposed; continue to do this and layer-up until it reaches the top of the bin. Remember to place in a sunny spot and keep watered, but not waterlogged.
• If you have not planted your onion sets, then make that one of your first jobs this month.
• You might start seeing aphids on your crops now – blast them off with water or spray with a horticultural soft soap.
• Beetroot, peas, and carrots can be sown directly outside.
• It is very tempting to sow seeds all in one batch; however, they will all need pricking out, thinning, and potting on at the same time. Sow the seeds that have the longest growing season first and stagger the rest.
• Sow sweetcorn – an interesting way of germinating sweetcorn is by pre-chitting – lay the seeds on a layer of damp kitchen paper then place a layer of paper over in an airtight box. Check daily and when a small white sprout appears, plant the seed about half to an inch deep in potting compost.
• Plant asparagus crowns by the end of the month.
• Do not forget to regularly hand weed or hoe around seedlings as the weeds appear, as they create a lot of competition for food and moisture.
• Tomato and cucumber seeds can be sown indoors but wait until the end of the month.
• Spring onions, chard, parsnips, spinach, and broad beans can be sown into the open ground.
Happy gardening!

Rogue traders, hi-tech scammers, or cowboy service operators can catch even the wariest of people off their guard. Scams are becoming more and more sophisticated, but there have recently been some great strides made in the ongoing fight against fraud. According to Action Fraud, 142 arrests have been made in the UK’s biggest-ever fraud operation led by the Metropolitan Police, resulting in an international, ‘one-stop-spoofing-shop’ being taken down. More than 200,000 potential victims in this country alone have been targeted through the fraud website, iSpoof. At one stage, almost twenty people every minute were being contacted by scammers, hiding behind false identities, posing as representatives of banks including Barclays, Santander, HSBC, Lloyds, Halifax, First Direct, Natwest, Nationwide and TSB. Victims are believed to have lost tens of millions of pounds while those behind the site earned almost £3.2 million in one twenty-month period.
iSpoof allowed users, who paid for the service in Bitcoin, to disguise their phone number so it appeared they were calling from a trusted source. This process is known as ‘spoofing’. Criminals attempt to trick people into handing over money or providing sensitive information, such as one-time pass codes to bank accounts. The average loss from those who reported being targeted is believed to be £10,000. In the 12 months until August 2022 around 10 million fraudulent calls were made globally via iSpoof, with around 3.5 million of those made in the UK. Losses reported to Action Fraud as a result of the calls and texts via iSpoof is around £48 million. Because fraud is vastly under-reported, the full amount is believed to be much higher.
Report fraud or cybercrime to Action Fraud using the online reporting tool at www.actionfraud.police.uk. You can also report to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040, Monday to Friday, 8am-8pm.
Tips on preventing cybercrime:
• Keep your software updated.
• Enable your system firewall.
• Use different/strong passwords.
• Use two factor authentication on your online services.
• Monitor your children’s online activities.
• Shop only from secure and well-known websites.
• Activate your email’s anti-spam blocking feature.

With the cost-of-living crisis still being felt by businesses and individuals alike, the risk of job loss is something which is concerning many at the moment.
For those who may be worried their employer is struggling and that they face redundancy, it may be helpful to have some knowledge of your position if those worries become a reality.
Employees who are made redundant and who have at least two years’ continuous service are entitled to a Statutory Redundancy Payment which is calculated based on the employee’s age, length of service and weekly pay.
A week’s pay is currently capped at £571 so if you earn more than that, the excess is ignored. There is also a twenty-year service cap and so, putting these caps together, the maximum payment is £17,130. These caps increase each year and so from April 6th, 2023 payments are likely to increase (the new amounts were expected to be announced in March 2023).
If you want to check how much your statutory redundancy pay should be, there is a handy calculator on the gov.uk website (see Calculate your statutory redundancy pay – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk).
Some employees might also have a right to enhanced or additional redundancy pay under their employment contract. It is not overly common these days but it is worth checking your contract and staff policies just in case.
The employee will also be entitled to a minimum amount of notice. The amount of notice they get depends on the terms of their employment contract. However, there is a statutory minimum notice period which applies to all employees which is one week’s notice in the first two years of employment, and an additional week for each full year of service after that. This is capped at twelve weeks’ notice in total. Some employees might have a longer notice period than this in their employment contracts and so, again, it is worth checking your employment terms or contract.
When someone’s employment ends, they might also be entitled to other payments like pay in lieu of any holiday they have accrued but not taken. Bonus or commission payments, overtime and outstanding wages may also still be owed. These all have to be paid.
Next month we will advise you on what you need to do if your employer can’t pay.
Whether you are saving for a specific goal, or just to create a nest egg for the future, thinking of retiring or you simply want your money to work as hard as you do, we are here to advise you through the different stages of your life.
Our aim is to educate our clients when it comes to their financial situation and make things easier for them. This is why we will always explain the advice in plain language with no jargon.
We have a strong belief in reviewing your circumstances to help meet any changing needs. We have regular meetings with our clients so that we can discuss and explain performance, tax implications and make any changes as and when required.
“I understand that the subject of financial planning can have the potential to be daunting and confusing, which is why no matter who you come into contact with at Mayflower, we ensure that all our clients are dealt with in a respectful, confidential, and compassionate manner”.
A packed programme of free events will be laid on in March this month for the first-of-its-kind St George’s Festival. After a series of events throughout the month, the festival will culminate on Sunday, April 23rd, with a 10am to 4pm event open-to-all in and around March Library in City Road.
The day will kick off with a ‘dragon march’ where the dragon, created from scales made at community events with artists Cary and Ricki Outis, will parade from the bandstand in West End Park through the park and back to the library mound. Attractions will also include an open-air arts and crafts market, specialist food stalls and live entertainment, including Newmarket Samba and March Brass Band, circus skills, falconry display, mini golf and a static scooter club display in West End Park.
Businesses in Fenland will have the chance to access grants of between £5000 and £75,000 to grow and increase employment opportunities in the district. Any business that is based in or operates out of Fenland can apply for funding. It can be used for a broad range of capital and revenue projects to cover up to eighty percent of project costs. Businesses must demonstrate their proposal will deliver in at least two of the following areas: Improve competitiveness; enable growth; enhance productivity; create sustainable jobs; and safeguard any jobs at risk of redundancy within the next six months.
To reflect Fenland District Council's economic priorities, the programme will prioritise businesses with significant operations in or supplying:
• agri-food, for example food production, food processing, food packaging, food security, horticulture and food technology
• specialist manufacturing, electronics and advanced and precision engineering.

In the spirit of the original Calendar Girls, the ladies of MADAOS bared all on a pretty chilly March day to produce a nude calendar to raise funds for Blood Cancer UK.
They are pictured in various tasteful poses, reflecting the story of ‘Calendar Girls the Musical’ which MADAOS will perform at March Community Centre, Station Road on the evenings of Wednesday, April 5th to Saturday, April 8th, with a matinee on the Saturday. The calendars will be on sale at the performances and afterwards and there will also be the opportunity to donate to Blood Cancer UK.
The show, with music by Gary Barlow, tells of how a group of WI members embark on a controversial scheme to raise money for a settee in the family room at Skipton General Hospital, in memory of one of their husbands, and end up doing much more! Tickets cost £14 and are available from www.ticketsource.co.uk/madaos
The winners of the recent competition to win two sets of family tickets to the forthcoming East Anglian Game & Country Fair on April 22nd and 23rd are Stella Snow and Linda Richardson
The duo won entry to the event at the Euston Estate after successfully stating that it is the home of the 12th Duke of Grafton.
Both winners were delighted with winning, with Stella adding: “I would like to compliment you on the Discovering March magazine. It really adds so much to this charming riverside market town, to be able to know what is going on locally.”

Edward Harley was born at March in 1883. He married Rosetta Chapman, who was born at Warboys, in 1886. They had four children; Edward born late in 1912, Dora born in early 1914, Margaret Rosetta born in early 1921 and Cynthia born spring 1922.
Edward (Snr) was a glazier, painter and decorator living at 29 Peas Hill, March. During WWII, Margaret and Cynthia both served in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. They met their future husbands during their service careers. Twenty-one-year-old Margaret had met twenty-four-year-old Leading Aircraftsman John (Jack) Allenby in the RAF and twenty-year-old Cynthia had met twenty-threeyear-old Private Annan Whyte of The Royal Scots when he was stationed at Eastwood House in March.
These two younger daughters enjoyed a double wedding ceremony at St Mary's Church, March on June 20th, 1942, which was conducted by Rev G Morrant. Both grooms wore their military uniforms for the ceremony.
After the war, Jack and Margaret settled in Marske-by-the-Sea in North Yorkshire, his home town. Initially he was a baker but settled into a long career in the steel industry. Annan and Cynthia moved to his home town of Edinburgh where he was a technical representative in the printing industry, moving subsequently to Letchworth, Worcester and Taunton. Both couples had two children.
Naturally, the couples would return to March to visit their relations and on the occasion of their Ruby wedding anniversary, they returned together
to pose at the doorway to St Mary's church in a recreation of their wedding photographs. On Saturday, June 19th they enjoyed a dinner party at The Griffin Hotel and on their anniversary day, a family party was held at 145A Wisbech Road, March, the home of their elder sister Dora Larham, who had been matron of honour for Margaret at the wedding.
Both sisters enjoyed long lives; Margaret Rosetta died at Redcar, Yorkshire in 2012 aged ninety-one and Cynthia died at Taunton in 2016 aged ninety-four.
March Museum wishes to thank Dawn Denton for additional research.

The Black Rock Grill & Smokehouse replaces the current restaurant at the town’s popular Three Lions Sports Bar in High Street.
The Black Rock Grill will feature a range of hand-cut premium steaks served on a hot black rock plus gammon, lamb, duck and chicken alternatives served with beer battered onion rings, homemade coleslaw, vine tomatoes and a choice of potato dishes, together with an option of a surf & turf mix.
While The Smokehouse offers culinary favourites including BBQ pork ribs, a chicken & rib combo, a variety of burgers – including a veggie option – chicken fajitas and fisherman’s salmon.
Owner Dan Smethurst, who also runs Route 47 American Steakhouse and Grill at Thorney Toll and previously had Shooters
American Diner in Nene Parade, March, said: “We have decided to give the restaurant a total rebrand with a new menu and image. Our previous restaurant has just not worked and so it was time for something new. “We will offer customers something different. For example, they will be able to select a part cooked steak and then have it
finished off on the stone in front of them. The Black Rock Grill & Smokehouse is a new concept. We have invested a lot into it to create a new atmosphere and it will feature new pictures, tables and music.”
The Three Lions Sports Bar opened last March with TVs showing different sports in a setting bedecked with sport memorabilia.
Dan added: “The Sports Bar has worked well. We have a lot of loyal customers and it really looks after itself. We have a different theme each day and have pool and darts teams, quizzes and music nights including karaoke.
“People will continue to use the main entrance with The Black Rock Grill & Smokehouse being located on the left and the Sports Bar continuing on the right hand side. We are all really hopeful that the rebrand will prove popular with people.”
The restaurant was due to close after Mother’s Day on March 19th before reopening on March 22nd. The venue – which until 2020 was known as the Cock Inn before a short spell as Rigby’s – also boasts a large beer garden and car park and is designed to appeal to customers of all ages.
Dan said the venue will be open for breakfast between 10am and noon and will offer food until 8pm or 9pm each evening with a new lunchtime menu also being unveiled.
restaurant has undergone an exciting rebrand to offer a great new selection of mouth-watering meals.

Microwave energy is widely used in a number of medical fields to elevate tissue temperatures and create precise, localised cell destruction.
Infected tissue can exist several millimetres below the surface and can often be difficult to treat using traditional methods, resulting in either untreated tissue or significant damage.
Swift delivers a precise, highly controlled energy dose. As microwaves travel into the tissue, water molecules begin colliding and creating localised heat energy – quickly destroying all infected tissue within a predetermined depth.
In just seconds the treatment is complete, leaving the body to absorb and replace the treated tissue.

The company has evolved from a small business operating from above a garage in Barnet, North London in 1974 to one of the UK’s largest suppliers of bespoke embroidered, woven, metal pin and hand wire badges.
After relocating to Outwell in 1986 and then to March five years ago, the Company invested in machinery including two multi-head embroidery machines, enabling it to offer a fantastic range of embroidered clothing, complimenting it’s already well-established in-house printing services producing stickers, pennants, promotional banners, mugs, mouse mats, stationery and other promotional products and merchandise. As a nation of animal lovers, we are more than happy to care for our four-legged friends, be it feeding, exercising, or maintaining their health and wellbeing. But what about animal physiotherapy? There’s a very talented young lady in South Lincolnshire establishing herself in this very niche field.
Carlie Wood BSc, Dip.A.Physio, IAAT, offers her services as a mobile therapist, so that sessions can be carried out in the comfort of your pet’s home, thus helping to reduce the stress your pet may feel. Carlie qualified in January 2020 and has been expanding her business and developing her knowledge ever since. As a member of the prestigious International Association of Animal Therapists, as well as being on the AHPR (Animal Health Professions’ Register), she can ensure that high standards are continuously maintained.
Carlie has over seventeen years’ experience in animal handling, welfare, behaviour, and rehabilitation, as she has worked with animals throughout her professional life. Services offered include the use of a variety of machines, massage, stretching, and a range of exercise techniques. With these methods (and working alongside the veterinarian), Carlie can rehabilitate conditions such as hip/elbow dysplasia, ruptured cruciate ligaments, IVDD and patella luxation, and degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis. Laser therapy is now available to help treat muscular issues, bone fractures, open wounds, orthopaedic and neurological conditions.
Carlie is fully insured, canine and human first-aid trained, and, due to expanding, she now has further availability, and can be flexible in arranging a time to suit you. Sessions include initial assessment, treatment, and home exercises, so that your pet can have the best chance of recovery.

We are rapidly approaching the summer months, meaning that many of you will be doing a lot of online bookings for days out and holidays. Here are some top tips on how to keep safe whilst online.
Set a serious password. Coming up with a good password that’s easy to remember as well as strong can be a challenge. The best passwords are made up of phrases, upper and lower case characters and punctuation. For example, “iloveShopping4shoes!” or “iwantaCheesesandwich4lunch!” would work really well (well not now obviously I’ve just told all the other readers). Use the £ symbol – it is the UK’s secret weapon as only UK keyboards have it on them!
For added security, I would suggest having multiple email addresses for at home – two at a minimum –one for all the social media sites you use (Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat etc) and one for the websites which contain financial information, i.e. shopping and banking. This means that should your social email address get hacked, it won’t be quite as catastrophic as the shopping/banking one. A lot of companies give free email addresses out – Microsoft, Google and Yahoo to name just three.
Avoid using a debit card online. A credit card provides a lot more financial protection online than a debit card does.
Make sure that you keep your PC or Mac up to date with the latest updates from Microsoft and Apple.
A very odd thing to say I know but hear me out. You can spend £60 a year on something like Norton or McAfee and they may give you a warm fuzzy feeling that you are safe, but you are not! They are making you as safe as they can and for the most part do a really good job of killing viruses and improving your firewall. They do, however, have two major flaws, the first being they are only as good as their last update and the second being that warm fuzzy feeling of feeling safe. The internet is full of fraudsters and hackers wanting to gain access to our bank accounts, and what anti-virus software cannot do is to prevent us, the users, from providing them with our easy-to-guess passwords and installing free programs from unknown websites that can actually get around any firewalls that are installed.

Royal Ballet: Founder choreographer Frederick Ashton’s Cinderella celebrates its 75th anniversary on April 12th. The ballet’s opening night in 1948, featuring Moira Shearer and Michael Somes in
the lead roles, was received rapturously. After more than a decade away from the Royal Opera House stage, Ashton’s timeless reworking of Charles Perrault’s famous rags-to-riches story returns, showcasing the choreographer’s deft musicality and the beauty of Prokofiev’s transcendent score.
NT live: Olivier award-winner Dominic Cooke (Follies) directs C P Taylor’s timely tale of Good airing on April 20th. David Tennant makes a muchanticipated return to the West End in a blistering reimagining of one of Britain’s most powerful, political plays. As the world faces the Second World War, John Halder, a good, intelligent German professor, finds himself pulled into a movement with unthinkable consequences.
Royal Opera: Director Antonio Pappano conducts a truly international cast in David McVicar’s timeless production of The Marriage of Figaro on April 27th. Servants Figaro and Susanna are filled with excitement on their wedding day, but there’s a hitch: their employer, Count Almaviva, has dishonourable intentions of his own towards the bride-to-be. With more twists than a page boy’s stockings, the story of Mozart’s comic opera will surprise and delight you at every turn, all unfolding over the course of one crazy, topsy-turvy day in the Almaviva household.
We are also hosting an Easter market on April 8th 12-4pm, come and support local business!
More blockbuster films coming your way including Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, and The Flash. Book your tickets and find out more by heading over to wisbech.thelight.co.uk
