Welcome to your November issue...

It’sgetting closer by the day, and I’m not talking about the ticklish thirty days ahead for us ladies, as some of our chaps let loose that moustache once more during “Movember”. No, I’m talking turkey, trees, tinsel and trimming-up, as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more. Whatever you are planning over the next few weeks and hopefully finding plenty of ideas in this issue to help you, make sure to book early for your special events. I hope you all continue to find your “Discovering” magazine both entertaining and useful, as we approach the Christmas period, just around the corner. Finally, I’d like to wish our youngest son, Ed, a very happy 21st birthday this month!
I recently went on a ‘Jolly Boys’ coach outing to the races with some friends and fellow punters. It’s always a good day, regardless of whether I back a winner – a rare event – and this was no exception.
A few drinks, much mickey taking and one race win later we stopped off at a pub on the way home which was completely deserted save for staff dressed in lederhosen and a DJ banging out some Euro disco hits. Now bearing in mind this place was not in a built-up area, it was a very strange scene. However, it was quickly established that they were having a German-themed Oktoberfest celebration later that evening and sure enough the place soon started filling up with customers.
only stayed for a couple of drinks but were there just long enough to enjoy a young Oompah band entertain the audience with their versions of modern day, classic pop songs...
very surreal experience but one which in these days of unremitting gloomy news was an unexpected but welcome surprise...

Parent-friendly Specialists and Home to the Biggest Brands
Olivers Babycare’s store is part of EDPA Limited, a long-established online retailer, trading in Peterborough for sixteen years.
John Lewis announced in April 2021 that their Peterborough branch would close immediately, leaving the area without a specialist baby store. That was the catalyst for the CEO of EDPA, Gerad Barclay, to fill the gap, by opening the Olivers Babycare store, at 24b King Street Industrial Estate, Langtoft, PE6 9NF.
Speed was of the essence. EDPA already operated five warehouses around Peterborough; creating shop space, therefore, was not a problem. Designing the store space and finding professionals for the shop fitout during the Covid lockdown was certainly a challenge though. However, with determination and incentives, the store fitout was completed quickly, and it opened in June 2021.
In recognition of the out-of-town location, emphasis was placed on quality, to create a parent-friendly, relaxing environment which includes baby changing facilities and air conditioning. The shop was instantly popular, attracting parents from the Deepings, Bourne,

“We are here to help”
Liz - Before joining Olivers Babycare, Liz worked in childcare for eight years. Being a mother herself, Liz can share her wealth of knowledge on “all things babies and children” and the things that make parents’ lives that bit easier. Liz works in the store most days, ready to create a personal shopping experience for you whilst visiting Olivers Babycare.
Charlotte - is a mum of two and has worked at Olivers Babycare for four years. She has incredible product knowledge and is also Sales Manager for EDPA Ltd. She stays in touch with trends by working in the shop on Saturdays, sharing her knowledge and experience and helping you find the best options for you and your family.

March, Stamford, Peterborough, Bedford, Cambridge, Norwich, Leicestershire, Rutland, and Nottinghamshire.
These early customers indicated that they wanted to see more products on display in-store, so, in order to meet the demand, Olivers Babycare invested heavily to triple the space, thus enabling them to have feature displays from big-name brands, such as Silver Cross, Nuna, Joie, Venicci, Cybex, Munchkin, Uppababy, and Chicco, to name but a few. Customers can try these products in-store and have access to a range of 4,000 products from the extensive stock in the warehouses.

Without a will a person’s money, property, pets, children and everything else will be dealt with under the laws of intestacy. These laws decide:
• Who deals with everything
• Who inherits everything
• The age people inherit
• Who looks after your children
Not only are important decisions made by a law that is almost one hundred years old, but without a will dealing with an estate can be more costly and stressful.
So, this is what could happen without a valid will in place. But having a valid will in place does not only solve these problems, it can do so much more. A will can:
1 Reduce the risk of claims against your estate by making sure your assets go to the right people in the right way.
2 Protect your home and other hard-earned assets.
3 Protect an unmarried partner. If you are not married, your partner may not receive anything from your estate when you pass away.
4 Save your family stress and money. Without a will your family may need to complete additional forms, undertake family tree research and seek further legal advice.
CUSTOMER TESTIMONIALS
“Such friendly people. Chris put me at ease straight away. Nothing too much trouble. He took his time and listened to me. Excellent service” N Worthington
“Everything was explained clearly and we had more than one opportunity to ask questions or for clarification which was very helpful” Mr & Mrs Dodd
“I was confident we were being well advised. The guidance offered remotely was easy to understand and presented in a manner that was not condescending. The face to face was friendly and business like, conducted professionally and on time” Mr Taylor
“Nothing could have been improved. You kept us updated at each step of the process. Efficient and friendly service” EB
With all this, it is easy to see why putting a will in place is so important, so why do so many people put off making their will? Talking about death and being unsure how to make a will are the most common reasons we hear as to why someone has not made a will.
One thing universally remains and that is, without a will you have no control what happens to your estate after you pass away and may unintentionally leave family with additional stress or costs to deal with.

WILD ABOUT MARCH
Leave only footprints and take only photographs
By Joan Munns, of March Wildlife Group & March & District Woodland Group
We must apologise for the closure of the car park at Gault Wood. The centre of the car park had sunk due to cars being deliberately spun on the grass. This resulted in the car park flooding every time there was heavy rain and sometimes cars got stuck causing more damage to the surface.

The Woodland Trust brought in contractors to level the surface and put in drainage. A membrane has been laid over the surface then top dressed with fine grit. The intention is for grass to grow through the membrane and grit to consolidate the new surface. Clearly, this will take quite a long time but there are already some signs of the grass coming through.
During the work on the car park the banks around the car park have been piled with soil covering all the wildflowers planted in the banks. It looks horrid and we hope that the plants break through; if they don’t, replanting will be necessary.
In the past, we have asked that dead wood lying around is left where it falls because it is habitat for lots of insects that are a vital part of the ecosystem. Den building means that lots of timber gets moved and its inhabitants disturbed. Please don’t build dens. The local area lacks wild places and the wood was planted in 1994 to provide a place for nature and it has succeeded but too much disturbance will undo our good works.
This brings me to the title of this article. The ‘leave only footprints’ applies to everyone and everything.
On my most recent walk around the wood I found three fresh lots of dog faeces just beside the path. This is so unfair to other visitors and dangerous to children. Please clear up after your dog and take it away.
‘Take only photographs’ applies to flowers and dead wood in particular. Every flower picked and taken away will not set seed for next year’s flowers. Just moving the dead wood is harmful; taking it away is sinful to nature. Picking small amounts of fruit such as blackberries or sloes is not so bad but should only be done in moderation for your own use.
We need help at our regular Gault Wood work parties. The next one is Saturday, November 5th. No one is expected to turn out every month but everyone needs to register to be a Woodland Trust volunteer for insurance purposes; registration is free. Contact the Woodland Trust using this email: volunteering@woodlandtrust.org.uk
In addition, we need a deputy warden for Gault Wood. It would be necessary to have Woodland Trust training for this position but the course is free and travelling expenses will be covered.
We are having our annual general meeting at The Scout Hut in Mill View (just beyond the exit from Sainsbury’s car park) on Friday, November 18th at 7.30pm. We will have a talk about the wildflowers of Gault Wood and plants and seeds will be available free. Please come and join us; the more the merrier!

Giant Tank
By Peter Wright on behalf of March & District MuseumSmith's Steam Flour Mill opened just off High Street in the late 1800s.
They also owned Acre Mill near the river. The High Street mill became the Hovis Flour Mill until it was affected by a fire in the 1960s and closed. The premises were sold to E. J. Lord, who established Mill Engineering Works.
David Johnson Farms, of Benwick, placed an order for a pair of what were referred to as 'Dortmund Tanks'. These were sedimentation tanks for cleaning the water that had been used for washing in their pre-packing vegetables business. They were made of steel, were sixteen feet wide and each weighed about six tons.
The engineering yard had a very restricted access and moving the tanks was a problem. The first tank was ready for delivery on the morning of Friday, July 26th, 1974. To move the tank a large road crane had to be brought in. It had to be able to lift sufficiently high to raise the tank over the dentist’s surgery building beside The Guildhall at the works entrance and out into High Street.

The police were needed to stop traffic in the road as the crane was reversed into the car park near the police station for loading onto a suitable lorry. The load was then given a large police escort on its journey to Benwick. Afterwards, the engineering company owner, Ernie J. Lord commented that 'The police did a wonderful job and that everything went quickly and smoothly.'
The Mill premises were demolished in December 2005 and Abbeygate Court and Mercedes House were developed on the site in 2007.

TRICKS AND TIPS
Tabbed Browsing
When browsing a website and you spot a link that interests you, you can open this link in a new tab so as not to interrupt your reading. Hold down the Ctrl Key and left click on the link. Alternatively, if your mouse has a wheel, click the wheel on the link. To open a new blank tab, press Ctrl + T
http:// and www
When entering an internet address, you don’t need to type http:// or even www in the URL bar.
Move between the fields of a web page
If you are filling out an online form or other text field, press the Tab key to move to the next field and Shift + Tab to move back a field. This also applies to buttons: Press the Tab key to highlight a button, then press the space bar or enter to ‘push’ the button.
Know your Internet browser shortcuts (Internet Explorer & Firefox)
There are dozens of shortcut keys that can be used with Internet browsers, such as:
• Alt + D or Ctrl + L will move the cursor into the address bar.
• Hold down the Ctrl key and press the + or to increase or decrease the size of text. Ctrl + 0 will reset the text.
• Press the backspace key or press Alt + left arrow to go back a page.
• Press F5 to refresh or reload a web page.
• Press Ctrl + F to open the find box to search for text within the web page you are reading.
Use Internet search engines to their full potential

If you can’t find what you want, try putting the text in quotes. For example, searching for ‘computer help’ without quotes returns results with ‘computer’ and ‘help’ anywhere on the page. However, if you search for ‘computer help’ with the quotes, it only returns pages with ‘computer’ and ‘help next to each other.
Try alternative browsers
Most computer users use the default browser that comes included with the computer. However, there are other alternative browsers that are free to download and use and may have features your current browser does not include. Our favourites are Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
Make sure your browser is up to date
Keeping your Internet browser up to date is important for both security and ensuring that web pages load properly. Most providers should automatically download updates and prompt you when they are ready to install.

Toffee
Toffee apples are popular at this time of the year and the kids will love helping to decorate them with their favourite sweets and treats!

Method
• Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.
• Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Boil gently for 12 minutes, until it has reached the soft-crack stage (138°C on a sugar thermometer, or the point at which a little of the mixture, dropped into cold water, forms threads that bend slightly before breaking).
• Dip the bottom two-thirds of the apple in the toffee, turning to coat. Working quickly, get the children to add their decoration of choice to each apple. Leave to set on the baking parchment for 15 minutes.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at St Peter’s Church at 9.50am-10.30am with the Act of Remembrance and Wreath Ceremony at the town’s War Memorial at 10.55am. The Armistice Day Parade will take place on Friday, November 11th.
KEEPING FENLAND MOVING
A new plan aimed at plugging the gap in active travel networks across Fenland has been given the green light by Fenland District Council.

The Fenland Cycling, Walking and Mobility Aid Improvement Strategy sets out how to develop and improve cycling, walking and mobility aid connectivity throughout the district.
The strategy identifies and prioritises opportunities for targeted investment in all four towns and surrounding villages, and outlines a number of recommendations, including:
• New cycling and walking routes
• Pedestrian crossing improvements
• Signage improvements
• Speed limit reviews
• A missing footpath review
• Footpath improvements, including extensions, widening, and dropped kerb installations.
Cllr Chris Seaton, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: “We want cycling, walking and mobility aid use to be more convenient, safe, and enjoyable travel options for people of all ages and abilities. While not every journey can be made on foot, or by bike or mobility aid, many of the shorter journeys in our district could be with the right investment over the coming years.”

HOMES SOUGHT FOR UKRAINIANS
Could you open your home to refugees fleeing the ongoing war in Ukraine? Fenland District Council is appealing for more people to join its team of Ukrainian hosts amid a continued surge of families looking to escape the conflict.
Six months on from the launch of the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme, more than one hundred Ukrainian refugees have so far been temporarily rehomed in Fenland.
But with the war continuing, and thousands of refugees including women, children and men exempt from military service seeking safe homes in the UK this winter, further hosts are needed.
In addition, new hosts are being sought to help support Ukrainian guests whose original accommodation hasn’t worked out, or where their original hosts have had changes to their personal circumstances meaning they are unable to continue to offer the use of their home.
Prospective hosts need to be able to offer accommodation for a minimum of six months, and those who are successfully matched to Ukrainian guests are offered a £500 per month ‘thank you’ payment.
If you are interested in becoming a host, call Fenland Homes for Ukraine support officer Tom Walczak for an informal chat on (01354) 622302 or email: twalczak@fenland.gov.uk
AN INSIDER'S VIEW AT WESTMINSTER ABBEY
John McAngus, a recently retired assistant receiver of Westminster Abbey, will this month give a talk to March Museum about his responsibility for protocol on state occasions.
With the eyes of the world focused on the Abbey recently, this is an insider’s appreciation of activities at this iconic institution, and his talk will be held at St Peter's Church Hall on Friday, November 11th, beginning at 7.30pm.
It is open to all at £3 each, with members’ concession £2. Refreshments are included.
COUNCIL THANKS TOP VOLUNTEERS

Fenland District Council has once again honoured the district’s finest volunteers.
The council’s annual celebration evening returned in full force to recognise the continued efforts of Street Pride, In Bloom, Friends, and Getting It Sorted Recycling volunteer groups, and to say a big, welldeserved ‘thank you’
At the Braza Club in March last month, the council brought together more than eighty volunteers to show its appreciation for their commitment and recognise all they’ve done over the last twelve months.

Seven awards were presented for the best projects over the year. There was also a guest presentation from Helen Dye, of Natural Cambridgeshire, who spoke about the support on offer from the partnership and the potential of nature projects, and live music from 1950s’ Rock ‘n’ Roll band, The Summertime Kings.
In the best partnership project section, March Street Pride/In Bloom was highly commended for taking advantage of the Government’s ‘Welcome Back’ funding, and working in partnership with Manea School of Gardening for guidance, to purchase new planters for March Market Place and replant the sensory garden at the front of March Library with perennials.
The Friends of March Railway Station were joint winners in the best promotional project category, with Murrow Street Pride. They also won the award for actively promoting the station and the work they do with various events for the public, including an open day and model railway exhibition in May and another in September to coincide with the national Heritage Open Days.
Wimblington Street Pride was highly commended in the best reduce, reuse and recycling project for installing eco-friendly herb planters which not only brighten up the village and use sustainable materials, but also encourage residents to use the herbs and raise awareness of ‘growing your own’.

Entry forms are being sent out to those who entered last Christmas but the Tree Festival team would welcome entries from individuals, families, voluntary organisations, churches, schools, pre-school play groups and local businesses to decorate a tree and display it in church for the public to view.

There is no fee to display a tree and the organisers say it is a good way to promote your organisation or business.
Entry forms and information are available by email to stpsfestivals@outlook.com or from St Peter’s Church. They should be returned by Tuesday, November 29th.
CELEBRATING A MARVELLOUS SEASON

Court of Protection And Helping People Manage Their Finances

you notice that someone you are close to is getting confused and is struggling to manage their money, what can you do to help?
If the person has planned ahead and they’ve put a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) in place, their chosen attorneys may be able to start helping them straight away, if the LPA has been registered. If the LPA hasn’t been registered, they can arrange for that to be done so they can help.
But what if they haven’t planned ahead?
If they are struggling, but still have the ability to understand that they need help, it’s important to get a Lasting Power of Attorney in place immediately. The person has to be able to choose who they want to look after things and to be able to understand what this means for them. The process of setting up LPAs can take from twelve to sixteen weeks approximately including the time for it to be registered by the Office of the Public Guardian.
If they have reached a stage where they can’t choose who should help them or to understand the process, someone is going to have to ask the Court of Protection for permission to manage things for them. This can be a family member, a friend or even a professional such as a lawyer or an accountant.
Court of Protection
The Court of Protection is a specialist court that makes decisions on financial, or welfare matters when people can’t make decisions for themselves at the time they need to be made.
The court checks whether the person can make decisions for themselves and if they can’t, they can appoint someone to make decisions for them. That person is known as a deputy.
Deputy
The role of a deputy is to look after the person’s finances within the boundaries of the permission set out by the Court of Protection. This could be limited to managing their day-to-day finances but could also include selling or buying property for their use.

Asking the court for permission to help
To ask the court for permission, you need to be able to show that the person can’t make their own decisions anymore. You will need a report from a doctor or specialist detailing their current level of capacity and whether this is likely to change over time. You will also need to provide the court with information about the person’s financial affairs and their family set up.
It can be a slow process to gather the information, obtain the report from the doctor and for the court to consider the application. In our experience it can take around twelve months to get permission from the court. Before that permission is given you will not be able to help manage their money.
Clearly it is always better to plan ahead, but if no LPA is in place and you need to ask the Court of Protection for permission to help, we can assist and advise you with the process. Contact us on (01945) 898090 or email hello@vinelaw.co.uk for a no-obligation chat.

Consumer Advice
Shoppers Urged to be Extra Vigilant as “Black Friday” Draws Near
By Eileen Le Voi at Safe Local Trades

With “Black Friday” coming up on November 25th, millions of shoppers will be looking to bag a bargain, particularly online, but it’s a perfect opportunity for scammers to target potential victims. Scam online shopping bargains cost shoppers £15.4 million over the Christmas period last year, according to ‘Action Fraud’.
Here's some helpful tips on spotting a scam:
If you’re making a purchase from a website or person you don’t know and trust, research the seller first.
• Use a payment method that offers buyer protection, such as a credit card.

• Take care with links in emails and texts. Some of these may contain links to fake websites.

• Make sure you have a strong password for your email. Criminals can use your email to access other online accounts, such as those you use for online shopping.
• Keep your devices up to date. Make sure you install the latest software and app updates.

Popular scams to look out for:
• Order confirmation. These emails will claim that an order has been confirmed but won't tell you what the order is. Instead, you'll be asked to click on a link to find out. If you do, you will then be directed to a page that looks just like the retailer's site, but it'll be fraudsters who will receive your personal information if you have inputted it anywhere.
• Fake invoices. A fake invoice from a scammer claiming that your payment hasn't been received, asking you to re-enter your bank details. If you receive one of these, regardless of whether you think you have tried to purchase, make sure you read the information carefully and compare it against your most recent bank statement.

This Holbeach-based firm are establishing a very impressive reputation for the quality of their work and the service they provide, across a wide area of South Lincolnshire and neighbouring counties. This can be clearly confirmed by the huge number of very favourable recommendations from satisfied customers on their website, www.lincolnshireresindrivesltd.co.uk, but especially on their Facebook pages.
Resin driveways are a long-lasting and easy-tomaintain option to transform the front of your home. An eco-friendly alternative, thanks to the non-toxic materials used, and available in a range of colours, a resin driveway is naturally draining, meaning no more puddles from heavy rainfall. They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition.
The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends
RECOMMENDATIONS:
❝ … the men worked very hard, they were polite and very tidy and were able to answer all questions we asked them - a big thank you to Mark and his staff - well done!” (C.H.)
❝ From my very first meeting I felt I could trust Mark to ensure a professional job would be done. The team were very hard working and a pleasure to work with.” (P.H.)
❝ Mark’s team were very professional, tidy, and really friendly - cannot fault any aspect of their work from start to finish. They have transformed the front of our bungalowcannot recommend highly enough.” (S.S.)

Whether you are looking for something subtle or eye-catching, Lincolnshire Resin Drives Ltd are confident you will find a driveway, path or patio that fits your requirements and complements your home. Top Movie Picks For November
Get set for another vibranium-fuelled adventure with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever released on November 11th. Black Panther was a cultural phenomenon that broke box-office records and stood out from the crowd as a celebration of African culture. The sequel looks to be no different, but also an epic and emotional love letter to the franchise’s late star Chadwick Boseman. Tickets are on sale now!

Family Favourites
From the director of Big Hero 6, Moana, and Raya and The Last Dragon comes a new breed of animated Disney adventure. Strange World blasts onto our screens on November 23rd, taking us to a place where nothing is as it first appears, from blue gloop creatures to pieces of environment that can get up and walk themselves off. Strange World delivers a colourful amount of wonder and mystery for the whole family to enjoy.

Film adaption of the smash-hit musical phenomenon based on Roald Dahl’s beloved book finally hits our screens on November 25th.
Matilda The Musical follows Matilda Wormwood –a little girl with big curiosity and a vivid imagination – and the worst parents in the world, as she enters through the menacing school gates of Cruncham Hall. Expect hit songs from the stage show musical, as well as fresh takes on iconic scenes including Bruce Bogtrotter and his chocolate cake, a child being swung by her pigtails in the playground, and Matilda’s father having his hair dyed purple. That’s all before Emma Thompson is finally revealed, yet almost unrecognisable as the haughty and horrid headmistress Miss Trunchball.

Event Cinema
Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) makes her West End debut in The Seagull – screening on November 3rd, 7th and 9th. This 21st century retelling of Anton Chekhov’s tale of love and loneliness filmed live in London’s West End, follows a young woman who is desperate for fame and a way out. A young man is pining after the woman of his dreams. A successful writer longs for a sense of achievement. An actress wanting to fight the changing of the times. In an isolated home in the countryside, dreams lie in tatters, hopes are dashed, and hearts broken. With nowhere left to turn, the only option is to turn on each other.

Don’t miss ROH: A Diamond Celebration showing for one night only on November 16th. The Royal Ballet’s dazzling principals lead an evening not to be missed, their sparkling talents a perfect fit for a diamond anniversary. Celebrating the sixtieth anniversary of The Friends of Covent Garden, this programme recognises the amazing support of all ROH Friends past and present.
