Introduction

Welcome to Your May Issue.

What’s in a name? A while ago I was standing outside a local hostelry when a younger man asked me if my name was Stan? I said that I used to be called that when I was at school but how could he know as he was too young? He explained that his Dad – an old friend – was inside the pub and had seen me, hence the question.

I seem to remember I picked up the moniker years ago because at school I was known as ‘Stan the Man’ but ugly rumours remain that it wasn’t that, it was ‘Stan, Stan the horsemeat man’ because my father was a butcher!

Since then, I have been known as Andy or even ‘And’ to my mates, and a lot worse to others! However, there is one thing that hasn’t changed since I was a kid. If I’ve ever been suspected of doing something wrong, it’s always Andrew….

You know when you are moving relentlessly through the year when the Bank Holidays come upon us.

We’ve just had Easter and the May Bank Holiday is on May 6th to be followed by the Spring Bank Holiday later in the month on the 27th before the long wait until August for the Summer Bank Holiday.

These days off are always looked forward to with the prospect of enjoyable trips out either locally or afar for a well-earned change of scenery, despite the obligatory traffic problems, but they come at a price. Every time one is on the horizon, it means work has to be crammed in to fewer days before we can close the office door.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have the extra time off without the panic of having to finish our work more quickly in the preceding days...!

Do you Suffer from Painful Verrucae or Unsightly Fungal Nails?

Verrucae are a skin infection caused by a virus that invades the skin and causes visible lesions to appear on the skin. They may appear as a plaque of hard skin, with an irregular border and can have black dots, (blood vessels), visible.

They can be on the soles of the feet or on the toes. The virus is contagious and can grow to bigger lesions and spread on your feet, and to other people. Over a period of time, your immune system can fight the virus to get rid of the verruca, but this specialist treatment can help with the more stubborn verrucae.

Podiatrists have been having a lot of success with a treatment technique called ‘needling’. This is proving to be a reliable treatment for the removal of warts, and is very practical for the busy person who cannot come in for regular sessions. Other treatments using acids and cryotherapy involve multiple appointments, which can add up to a lot

of time out of work and expense, and rely on the patient being fit and healthy.

Needling involves usually only one treatment session and a follow-up, six weeks later. The treatment itself involves a local anaesthetic and then, once 'numb', puncturing of the wart with a needle with the aim of innoculating the virus into the host to produce an immune reaction. Whilst the injection is a little unpleasant, the needling is pain-free. The foot is a little sore for a few days, but no worse than most of the other verruca treatments available. The good news is that, if you have multiple warts, we don't have to needle all of them to get a good result. Recent studies have shown verruca dry needling has a success rate of approximately 70 percent.

Words from Mayor James Palmer

As a directly elected mayor, my dayto-day responsibilities are quite different from those of a ceremonial mayor.

However, it was a privilege to join the Mayor of March, Jan French, to present March Lions’ awards for community service this year. I was hugely impressed with March’s strong sense of community, and it is my job is to help ensure it can continue to thrive well into the future. Fenland’s infrastructure and the health of its market towns are key pillars of the Combined Authority’s ambitious plans for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.

Trains: I am working to help Greater Anglia implement its hourly service from Peterborough to Ipswich, which stops at March. It is currently twohourly. I am also engaged in a joint campaign with Stephen Barclay M.P. to see later trains between March and Cambridge. At present, those working late or going out for the evening in Cambridge can’t get back to March on the train after about 9pm.This work goes hand-in-hand with the Combined Authority’s £9 million investment for regenerating Fenland’s railway stations. March station is in line for capacity upgrades to the existing car park and a redesigned station building. The redeveloped building will accommodate a new waiting area, shop and ticket office. I am currently working with Fenland District Council and Network Rail to bring these forward as quickly as possible.

of early work that has already taken place, March has been put forward by Fenland District Council for the Government’s Future High Streets Fund for adaptable and sustainable high streets. This is moving forward at speed and we can’t wait to share the final Masterplan vision for the town.

A47: The dualling of the entirety of the A47 in Cambridgeshire is long overdue. The Combined Authority’s Board recently approved an approach to dual the road in one single scheme, as opposed to the usual, time consuming, bit-by-bit schemes we have seen over the years. This plan could accelerate delivery by as much as six years. I will be working closely with government to secure funding. Upgrading this vital road link is essential for opening up growth in March and across the whole of north East Anglia.

Masterplan: The Combined Authority is working with representatives in March, including local businesses and councillors, to produce the March Masterplan for Growth. The Masterplan will identify where we can make targeted investments to further improve the local economy, and enhance March as a place to live, work and visit. As a result 10

Grant Funding for Small and Medium Businesses Small and medium businesses in Cambridgeshire can access grant funding and free energy efficiency reviews, thanks to ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) funding.

The ‘Business Energy Efficiency’ programme can potentially provide grant funding up to a maximum of £20,000, or 25 percent of project costs, to eligible businesses for energy efficiency improvement measures, such as LED lighting, heating, insulation and solar PV. Local History

March Festival Week 1958: Part 1

The following afternoon there was a parade through the town by local voluntary organisations and bands to a combined service held in the Avenue Recreation Ground. Through the week there were flower displays, balloon races, church tours, treasure hunts, art exhibitions, and road and cycling safety displays.

The March Festival Week was held from September 13th to 20th, 1958. It was an idea

by March Chamber of Commerce and its chairman Mr H L Porter to promote shopping in the town.

Unofficially the first event was an attempt by St Wendreda's Church bell ringers to peal 5000 changes on their bells to open the festival. This began at 3.15pm, but unfortunately had to be abandoned after 2¼ hours when errors resulted in false changes.

The official opening ceremony at 7.30pm on Saturday at the Market Place was performed by Tom Ellingham, chairman of March Urban District Council. This was followed by the band of the Cambridgeshire Regiment TA beating tattoo and an exhibition of dancing by the Hereward Girls’ School and an American Square-Dancing Group.

On Tuesday the local brigade of the Isle of Ely Fire Service gave a spectacular firefighting display sending jets of water from two fire tenders up into the evening sky and over the Town Hall with 'Britannia' getting wet. Youngsters shrieked with delight as they were soaked revelling in the occasion. A 'pipe bridge' was erected to show how hoses could be carried across roads without interrupting traffic where even a double-decker bus could get beneath. Extinguishing an oil fire with foam was a popular demonstration. Crowds of spectators watched from both sides of the river as a rubber raft was inflated with CO2. This firefighting vessel could propel itself up and down the river using jets of water from its own pumps, each delivering 350 gallons of water per minute.

BOOST FOR INDOOR CYCLING ACROSS FENLAND

Four leisure centres in Fenland now have 95 brand new Indoor Cycling Group® (ICG) IC6 bikes and associated session software.

Freedom Leisure, the not-for-profit leisure centre operator which operates four centres in Fenland on behalf of Fenland District Council, has invested more than £100,000 to relaunch the cycling studios at George Campbell Leisure Centre, March, Manor Leisure Centre, Whittlesey, Hudson Leisure Centre, Wisbech and Chatteris Leisure Centre.

Centre manager Andy Cornwell said: “The primary aim for this investment is to build upon our already established indoor cycling programme because indoor cycling has always been really popular in Fenland. The new, state-of-the-art, enhanced and unique experience will hopefully support both existing participants while also working to appeal to new customers to join us.”

YOUNG MUSICAL TALENT GOES TO WORK Fenland Music Centre Association has held its first ever Youth Musical Showcase and Orchestral Concert at St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Chatteris.

Following an afternoon’s musical workshop, 16 talented young local musicians took to the stage to perform individual pieces that ranged from Vivaldi to Charlie Parker on a full array of orchestral instruments, which included trombones, violins, saxophones, flutes, piano, and harps.

There then followed a full orchestral concert in the evening, whereby all the workshop musicians played pieces they had practised just that same afternoon.

The event was sponsored by Metalcraft (Chatteris) Ltd, with Martin Lawrence, Community Fund Chairman, presenting a cheque to Nyree Scott, FMCA chairperson, for the hire of the church. The event was also supported by the Tesco store (March) and the Rotary Club of Chatteris, who supplied and served refreshments during the interval.

Overall, the event raised £223.30 for the FMCA charity, all of which will go towards the running of weekly orchestras, bands and ensembles that practise at March Community Centre every Friday from 6pm-9pm.

GIRLGUIDING ANGLIA TAKES ON MACMILLAN CHALLENGE

BEARS’ 50TH ANNIVERSARY DINNER DANCE

As part of the Macmillan Challenge, Girlguding Anglia will offer its members the opportunity to take part in up to six different badge challenges, focusing on taking action, raising awareness and raising funds.

March Bears Rugby Club is holding its 50th anniversary dinner dance on Saturday, June 8th at the GER Sports Club, Robingoodfellows Lane, March.

The Macmillan Challenges aim to build on one of the new Girlguiding programme themes; Take Action, by giving girls an opportunity to use their voice to help their community and the wider world.

The six badges available for girls to collect include a badge for taking part in any kind of fundraising activity, a badge for hosting or supporting a coffee morning as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning and one for raising awareness and organising care packages in the run up to Christmas.

Tickets are priced £35 for the event which is being held from 6.30pm until late and includes a fourcourse meal, live entertainment, a raffle and awards presentation. They should be purchased

Collectively members of Girlguiding Anglia hope to raise enough funds to support 2500 Macmillan nursing hours (it costs £28 to fund a Macmillan nurse for one hour).

As part of the Challenge, girls will help raise awareness of the key cancers that affect girls and women so that everyone in the Girlguiding Anglia region knows how to spot the signs and symptoms.

Tracy Foster, Region Chief Commissioner for Girlguiding Anglia, said: “We are delighted to launch our partnership with this wonderful charity.

Unfortunately, cancer affects so many of us, our families and friends and I’m pleased we can encourage our members to take action, raise awareness and hopefully raise some vital funds through our challenges and activities throughout the coming year.”

CHARGRILLED POTATO SALAD Warmer days can only mean one thing - barbecues! Jersey Royals are firmly in season so give your humble potato salad a crispy, smokey edge with this tasty recipe...

Method

• Boil the potatoes in a pan for around 10 mins or until just tender; drain.

• If using a gas barbecue, pre-heat to medium-high, or if using charcoal wait until the coals are glowing and the flames have died down. Grill the potatoes for 10-15 mins, turning often, until crisp and golden.

Ingredients Serves 6 1.25kg new potatoes, halved

• Mix the remaining ingredients and season. Stir in the potatoes and serve.

MAY Gardening Tips “Ne’er cast a clout till May be out,” says the old English proverb. We sometimes get lulled into a false sense of security and think that summer has arrived, but watch the weather in case of late frosts, and protect any tender seedlings. Also take care to harden off plants that have been grown indoors or under cover before planting. May is a difficult month to judge, as the weather can vary between heat and mini-drought to late frosts, heavy rain and strong winds.

This month sees more pests appearing: aphids, slugs and snails will all be out in force and regard the new seedlings and young plants as a scrummy free meal, sampling your crops before you have chance to! A couple of ideas for repelling the varmints: Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal naturally deter aphids and ants, so plant (or put them in pots) throughout the vegetable plot.

Plant flowers that attract the pest predators such as marigolds and nasturtiums.

Some of us only set aside a small plot for growing fruit and vegetables so, to maximise your space, you can try: • Intercropping – sowing two crops in the same row, one slow and one fast growing. Fast growing crops include Oriental salad leaves, lettuces, radishes, spring onions, spinach and spring-planted shallots. Slow growers are parsnips, sweetcorn, tomatoes, leeks, winter cabbage, cauliflower, sprouting broccoli and Brussels sprouts.

• Catch Cropping – sowing a fast-growing crop in the brief period a plot might be empty.

Other jobs to do this month include: • Earth up potatoes.

• Cover carrots with netting to stop carrot fly damage.

• Harden off and plant out vegetables sown earlier.

• Pot on growing plants.

• Put up bean and pea supports.

• Pick flowers off new strawberries to prevent them cropping in their first year.

• When watering young plants and seedlings, it is better to water less frequently but more thoroughly as this gets down to the roots. If you water lightly, it may only wet the surface of the soil and the roots may be encouraged to stay near the surface where they are more likely to suffer from drought damage.

• Seeds to sow out this month are too numerous to list but a few include carrots, beetroot, French beans, lettuce, spring onions, salad leaves and peas.

• Try “succession sowing” a small batch of seeds every two or three weeks, and you should have a steady supply rather than a glut: it will also help to maximise your chances of successful germination.

• Indoors, you can sow chillies, courgettes and squashes, runner beans, sweetcorn, aubergines and cabbages.

The Last Thing A Biker Wants To Hear

“Sorry mate I didn’t see you” is unfortunately something that bikers hear all too often.

Government statistics for 2017 show that while fatality figures for most road users are falling, motorcyclist deaths have increased by nine percent. The roads can be a dangerous place for those on two wheels.

This won't come as a surprise to motorcyclists who are fully aware that many motorists don’t see them coming even when ‘looking’ in their direction.

It has been shown that when a driver is looking out for a car, their brain is less likely to register a motorcycle. This is cold comfort, however, if you are injured or your bike has been damaged.

Can you claim for lost earnings or damaged equipment as the result of a collision?

If the driver didn’t look or didn’t see you, they could be guilty of driving without due care and attention, a criminal offence. A conviction here could be useful in proving a civil claim for damages.

If you weren’t in view when the other motorist started their manoeuvre, they could avoid blame for the accident. Accidents can happen, and when no one is to blame, no one is liable for damages.

Can you claim if your accident was caused by the road surface?

The maintenance of a road will either be the responsibility of Highways England or the local county council.

The Highways Act 1988 states that the authority has a duty to repair defects such as potholes within a reasonable time of their discovery. If the defect that caused your accident was unreported, you may not have grounds for a claim.

Road repairers have a duty not to leave materials on the road. If debris left on the road causes an accident, you could have grounds to make a claim.

The same applies to mud on the road from farm vehicles or an oil or diesel spillage from a commercial vehicle although it can be difficult to prove who left the mud or contaminant on the road surface, limiting your opportunity to claim.

What should I do if I am involved in an accident?

For the best chance of a successful claim, you should gather as much evidence as you can at the scene, in particular: • The names and addresses of any witnesses.

• Photos of damage to your bike and other vehicles involved. Include number plates and any points of collision.

• Photos of the road surface or debris affecting it.

• Photos of the road or junction where the accident occurred. Get pictures from various angles, identifying where the accident happened and the direction of each vehicle's travel.

SMALL TOWN

For now, my roots will keep me warm. But one day, they may not.

I may want to travel this world and get lost for a little while.

They say you ‘never know until you go’ but maybe we do. These people who travel around might just have the right idea – not tied down to anything, not part of a ‘clique’, they don’t have to adhere to the social expectations of a small town or even be a part of any town. Now doesn’t that sound amazing?

No nosey neighbours that like a little bit of gossip, peeping through their blinds at you and you having to pretend you’ve not seen them… nothing like that.

But I guess that also means no community? No family? No stories when you’re old about the places you used to go? See, the thing about March and all of the surrounding villages and towns is that there is a lot of community spirit. Don’t get me wrong, neighbours can be annoying, and parts of the community are a bit questionable. But, it’s a big family, nonetheless. You will find that you have the same aggravations as that old lady down the street that you’ve never spoken to. You will find that you don’t like the way your neighbour plays his music loud, but I bet he’d help you out if you needed.

I was recently speaking to a friend who grew up in this ‘small town’ and moved to a city, Nottingham in fact. And, she was amazed at how much I knew about everyone around here. I’m a bit of a gossip mind you, but also – it’s the small-town mentality!

Although it must be absolutely brilliant to live in a place where nobody knows you or your past, you can walk through the street wearing what you want, doing what you want without a care in the world, and certainly without anyone talking about it at the hairdressers the next day! They’ll still talk about ‘that girl’ who had toilet roll hanging off their shoe, for example, but they just don't know who ‘that girl’ is.

And I personally find that sad. I want to leave a mark on this world in so many ways and being a part of a community certainly comes into that.

Whether that’s helping out by buying locally, supporting local events or charities – whatever it is, it’s important. And, by helping your small town grow, you’re leaving your mark in little ways! So, if you’re out and shopping, maybe have a think about popping to the family-run shop down the road from you, maybe use local traders and work people – do all you can to help your small town, be nice to your neighbours and be the little change that helps your little town!

CYBERCRIME has reached epidemic levels in the UK – with police reporting that more than £190,000 a day is lost by victims. The hacking of social media and e-mail accounts is rife, and according to Action Fraud, (which is run by the City of London Police), £34.6million was reported to be stolen from victims between April and September 2018; an increase of 24% on the previous six months.

Over 13,000 people in the UK reported cybercrimes over the six months, with more than 5,000 of those having had their social media or e-mail accounts hacked – costing victims £14.8 million.

Closer to home, an initiative to crackdown on scammers across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, and aim to make the county scam-free, is gaining momentum.

Safe Local Trades is delighted to be supporting the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams; from postal to online fraud to telephone scams and doorstep rogue traders.

In the case of cybercrime, fraudsters trick internet and e-mail users into giving personal details, including financial information, in order to steal their money.

Some kinds of online scams to be aware of: • Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g., your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data.

• Pharming: the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real/ legitimate one.

• Romance Scams: a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money.

• Impersonation of UK officials: criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment.

• File Hijacking: where a hacker enters your computer and accesses your files, locking you out of them. The hacker then demands a ransom (usually money) before he will give you your files back.

• Screenshot Managing: where hackers enter your computer and take screenshots of your display. This can help them get information about you, get passwords, or even blackmail you.

• Keylogging: where hackers can record your keystrokes on your computer, thus gaining your passwords or other personal information.

• Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information.

However, you can take steps to help protect yourself.

• Ensure that your devices all have up-to-date anti-virus security.

• Install a firewall and anti-spyware on your computer.

• Ensure that you update your software (including Windows or iOS) when prompted to do so; postponing an update can leave you vulnerable.

• Ensure that your devices are password-protected with a strong password - you can find the official governmental advice on creating passwords at www.cyberaware.gov.uk/passwords.

EAST ANGLIAN HOMEOWNERS HELP THEIR FAMILIES Just over one in five older homeowners in East Anglia are using their property wealth to help out their families, new data from the UK’s leading independent equity release adviser Key reveals.

Its analysis shows 22 percent of older homeowners using equity release in East Anglia last year used some or all of the cash to support children. Money gifted to families is typically being used to clear debts, pay for significant life events such as weddings or to fund house deposits. Key’s figures show other major uses of gifts are to pay for large family holidays, fund university fees or buy cars.

Almost two thirds (65 percent) re-investing some or all the money in their houses so that they can enjoy a better standard of living at home and ’age proof’ the property to make it easier as they get older.

Debt worries however remain a concern in the region – 29 percent of older homeowners paid off credit cards or loans with their property wealth while 23 percent cleared existing mortgages.

So, You Want To Try Gaming?

Firstly, the cheapest and most cost-effective entry into the gaming arena is to buy either an Xbox or a PlayStation. Simply, for cost/playability they really are good value for money.

Next entry level is to buy/build your own gaming tower. An entry level machine will allow you to play games such as Minecraft, CS-GO, Unturned and similar ‘entry level’ games at medium to high settings and playable FPS (how many pictures the graphics card can display per second).

We have such a machine for sale for £550, completely new.

Then, a machine such as this can be upgraded with an NVIDIA GTX 1060, AMD RX 460 GPU (graphical processing unit – the graphics ‘brains’ of the tower). Following such an upgrade the tower would then be able to play games such as PUB-G, Call of Duty, Far Cry 4, e.g. mid-range games at medium to high settings at playable FPS. The next thing real gamers want is a top specification gaming tower. At this point the sky is the limit in terms of what you can spend on the processor, GPU, and motherboard. An example of a higher specification gaming tower we have in the shop has an FX 8 core processor, 16Gb RAM and 16Gb VRAM (Virtual RAM), 240 Gb SSD (solid state drive, for the operating system), 1Tb HDD (hard disk for games and gaming data), 850 watt power supply and a water cooled system (both for XTreme cooling and silent running), all attached to a top of the range motherboard. Now this set-up would allow you to play Fortnite, Call of Duty, Crisis, and Battlefield, e.g. all ‘top-end’ games, without lag or delay at high to ultra-settings and a very high FPS. But, let’s say, you have your ‘ordinary’ laptop at home and want to play Grand Theft Auto V/Red Dead Redemption 2 – that’s impossible you may think; however, there are ways and means... and we will continue with this next month.

To finish this month’s article, a word of warning.

Should your laptop/tower start ‘blue-screening’/ shutting down for no apparent reason/fan never seems to stop running/or just feels very hot to the touch then you may have a blocked heatsink. This happens to all computers at some point in their life and can mean your machine digs an early grave.

These problems also affect PS4s and Xboxes, not just computers.

If suffering from these symptoms, please take your laptop/tower to a computer repair shop for a ‘clean and paste’ where the internals are cleaned of dirt/dust and fresh thermal paste is used on the Processor to reduce heat output.

It is not unusual to find blockages such as the one pictured above, inside laptops.

Join us on May 10th for hilarious new comedy The Hustle. This gender-swapped remake of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels stars Rebel Wilson and Anne Hathaway as female scam artists, one low rent, the other high class. The two decide to compete to trick a billionaire out of his fortune, but as the rivalry hots up, they realise they’re not so different after all.

Community matters to us, so come along to our dementia-friendly screening of Oscar-winning Green Book on May 11th. Named after the motoring handbook originally designed to help African American travellers avoid dangerous areas in pre-civil rights USA, Green Book is the story of black concert pianist Don Shirly and his Italian-American bodyguard/driver and their road trip through the Deep South in the early 1960s.

follows young street urchin Aladdin as he embarks on a magical adventure after finding a lamp that releases a wise-cracking genie (played by Will Smith), but soon, an evil sorcerer becomes obsessed with securing the lamp for his own sinister purposes.

Epic biographical musical drama, Rocketman is released on May 24th and stars Taron Egerton of Kingsman fame in the lead role. It tells the story of Elton John’s life, from his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music, through his enduring and influential partnership with Bernie Tauplin, as well as his struggles with depression, substance abuse and acceptance of his sexual orientation.

Godzilla: King of Monsters hits our screens on May 31st. The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized creatures including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan and his ultimate nemesis, the three headed King Ghidorah. Stamford Shakespeare Company Throughout the summer, from June 11th to August 31st this year, the Stamford Shakespeare Company presents a season of plays at the stunning Rutland Open Air Theatre. Described by ‘The Sunday Times’ as “One of the finest things to do this summer”, and ‘The Stage’ as “One of England’s premier alfresco theatre venues”, it really is an experience not to be missed. This summer the Company are proud to present three fantastic plays: Set in Albania in the early 19th century, garnished with live music and glorious costumes, Shakespeare’s greatest comedy, “Twelfth Night”, containing some of his finest comic characters, is a merry tale of unrequited love, shipwrecked twins, cross dressing, mistaken identity and drunken revels. The hilarious antics of roguish Sir Toby Belch, foolish Sir Andrew Aguecheek, pert Maria and prim Malvolio will delight audiences, young and old.

Shakespeare’s epic tragedy “Julius Caesar”, where political and military rivalries spiral out of control, is one of his most gripping plays and features some

of his greatest characters. In this powerful drama set in Ancient Rome, Brutus and Cassius, fearing the growing domination of Julius Caesar, plot his death.

But when, on the Ides of March, the dictator is assassinated, Mark Antony unleashes the rage of the people against the conspirators.

Noel Coward’s “Blithe Spirit”, a wonderful, supernatural comedy set in the late 1930s, portrays the trials and tribulations of novelist Charles Condomine, who foolishly holds a séance to research his latest book. When the eccentric medium, Madame Arcati, accidentally summons the spirit of his first wife, Elvira, his life descends into chaos. How will Charles cope, caught between two wives, one dead, the other very much alive?

The theatre is situated in the grounds of historic Tolethorpe Hall, where last summer over 33,000 people experienced the magic of a visit to this unique venue. Enjoy a picnic in the glorious gardens, then take your seat, protected from summer showers, and see a stage like no other.

Living in March

M

ost Fen towns in the 19th century had an abundance of cottages, attached and detached. Bedrooms were accessible through the use of ordinary ladders.

March was no exception.

Several cottages overlooked the river, and more were situated along The Causeway; they were known as the ‘The Long Eight’. The cottages were demolished in recent years and modern houses built on-site.

I remember being told by a resident living along the riverside that his cottage was haunted. It dated back to the mid-17th century. Apparently pots and pans left in the kitchen overnight had been moved to another part of the room near the window. I borrowed a spade and dug in the soil overlooked by the window. About 12 inches down I discovered

some rounded bricks and realised they formed a vault used as a burial place! I never told the residents!

In living memory, a burial took place on the river bank. Not so long ago they were allowed in back gardens after inspection for running water.

Cottages had very small windows and buildings along West End had toilets connected to the river.

Years ago, at funerals a horse-drawn hearse was used. Bodies were wrapped in a winding sheet for burial in the churchyard. After a few years, bones were buried in a communal grave and the burial site used again.

The illustration shows former cottages opposite St Wendreda’s churchyard. Residents used a socalled fresh water well sited twenty or thirty feet from the cottages. The buildings were pulled down several years ago. The short lane where they start is overlooked by a green space of grass, bushes and trees. The main road at the rear leading to Wimblington did not exist then.
