Introduction

Welcome to Your November Issue.

November was always my favourite month when I was growing up.

For some reason playing outside in invariably damp and misty weather conditions, having ‘conker’ competitions and generally messing about in the dark seemed exciting, especially with Christmas around the corner.

But the major reason was it was the month of my birthday and better still it fell on the fifth… Bonfire Night!

My birthday parties always had that extra bit of excitement to my mates’ as they were accompanied by a firework display in the back garden followed the next day by the ritual collecting of the old fireworks… we were easily pleased back then.

Coincidentally my son shares the same birthday as me and my daughter was born in November on my late father’s birthday, so November has always figured highly in my life.

Sadly, nowadays I’m of an age where I wouldn’t care if I only had a birthday every four or five years but back then it was great...

This month marks the centenary of the end of the First World War and in local towns and villages many people will gather for Remembrance Day services on Sunday, November 11th.

It is difficult today to comprehend what a massive effect the 1914-18 war would have had on the local population.

Schoolfriends would have joined up and gone to fight abroad in a conflict they probably didn’t know too much about while back home mothers, wives, girlfriends and children soldiered on without them.

The sacrifice of all those who gave their lives in the Great War and also the Second World War and later conflicts should never be forgotten, and this year especially the eleventh will be even more poignant.

Local Event

It’s the Most Wonderful time of the Year!

March Events Committee is delighted to invite you to March Christmas Market on Sunday, December 2nd at 10am-3pm.

Visitors to March town centre are in for a real treat this festive season as each year this event gets bigger and better! If you’re looking for a special gift or artisan produce, you’ll find it here.

There will be a wide variety of confectionery, spirits and liquors and ‘must-haves’ including the allimportant Christmas tree and unique decorations.

A packed programme of entertainment will take place on the Market Place from 10am throughout the day following an official opening by the Mayor of March. This will include performances from

local schoolchildren, groups and a live house band whose upbeat music will not fail to spread Christmas spirit!

Children will be able to tell Santa what they would like for Christmas too! He will be waiting for you in his grotto on the Market Place until 3pm… before he has to be on his way for more pressing matters!

There will be plenty for all ages from warm spiced cider for the grown-ups to children’s amusements and rides for the little ones. Winter Wonderland in March Town Hall is not to be missed either.

There will be children’s activities running all day courtesy of Twenty20 Productions. Many of the local businesses are supporting the event too so please be sure to pay them a visit.

Pupils at Wisbech Grammar School celebrate 99% A-level pass rate Wisbech Grammar School Headmaster Chris Staley was delighted with the school pupils’ A-level results this year.

He said: “I am incredibly pleased with the A-level results this year; these are the best results we’ve achieved for a number of years, particularly the top grades 57 percent of which were at A*-B. 31% of which were A* and A (significantly higher than the national average 26.4%). We have also improved our A* to C percentage up by 11%, to 87%, which is fantastic. The overall pass rate remains in excess of 99%.

“These results are a testament to our pupils’ hard work, and the dedication and resilience of our exceptional teaching staff plus the all essential support given by parents. Such grades will provide an excellent foundation for their university careers where more than 75% of our pupils have gained entry to their first-choice university, again another first.

I am overwhelmed with my results and excited about my future at Cambridge University. I have always felt that anything is possible at WGS 6th Form, and I’m ready now for the next chapter of my life. What would I say to myself if I was starting A levels again? Nothing is insurmountable and if you feel like you are struggling, take a step back, breathe and ask for help from your teachers as you are not alone.

Remembrance

We Will Remember Them

R

emember, remember the 5th of November... I can remember being in primary school and chanting this with my friends. Remembering Guy Fawkes, just so that we could go and watch fireworks and eat toffee apples!

But, where is the chant for the 11th of November?

An incredibly important day, one that should be remembered and cherished, forever. In my personal opinion, the importance of this date should be drilled into young people, so that they understand just what happened on that date back in 1918, and how it shapes everybody’s lives today.

On November 11th, 1918, fighting in World War I came to an end, following the signing of an armistice between the Allies and Germany that called for a ceasefire effective at 11 a.m. – it was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

The fight for our freedom should never be taken for granted, and certainly not belittled. We should be thankful for the strength and resilience of every service man, woman, and indeed thousands of animals involved too that participated in the fight for our lives, no matter how many years pass.

As a young person, I will make sure to remember every day, and as I grow older, my respect and

gratefulness will not shrink with time; I will make sure that when I have children one day, they will forever remember, no matter how many years it has been.

I wrote a short poem to say thank you. We will remember them.

I take this day, the 11th of November I take this day as one to remember.

While the memories lie and poppies grow, We don’t forget, we make sure we know, That it’s not just today we are thankful for, It’s every day, everything, for evermore.

So thank you, soldier, son, family man and friend, For giving all you were, right until the very end.

If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be here today, So thank you always, today’s your day.

‛Movember̛: What’s All That About Then?

The word ‘Movember’ was first coined in Adelaide, South Australia in 1999, and the idea of growing a moustache for charity throughout November was born.

Today, in Britain, it is essentially all about bringing back the moustache (Mo), having fun, and doing a lot of good to change the face of men’s health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

‘Mo Bros’ grow the ’tache, and in doing so become walking, talking billboards for men’s health. “Mo Sistas” sign up and commit to supporting the men in their lives while helping to promote men’s health at home, in the workplace and within their community.

Matters REMEMBERING THE FALLEN…

The March Branch of the Royal British Legion will be organising the March Town Remembrance Parade on Sunday, November 11th, 2018 - the centenary of Armistice Day. Following a Service of Remembrance at St Peter’s Church from 9.55am to 10.30am, the parade will march to March Town War Memorial in Broad Street for the Act of Remembrance followed by a wreath laying ceremony at 11am.

This year Neale-Wade Academy pupils have been requested to read out the names of the fallen listed on the March Town War Memorial.

BAGS OF HELP RAISES £50K+ Representatives from several local charities and good causes have met up with Tesco community champion Kelly Riddell and groundwork community project manager Katie Dean to review the results of the 'Bags of Help' scheme.

At the meeting at the Tesco store in March, they heard that money collected from the 5p levy on disposable carrier bags has been distributed amongst 27 local organisations, totalling more than £50,000.

PATIENTS ARE INVITED TO ATTEND OPEN MEETING Fenland Group Practice Patient Participation Group works in partnership with the doctors’ practice to provide a patient’s perspective, foster communication, provide practical support and help patients.

The group holds quarterly open meetings in February, May, August and November with the next meeting being held on Thursday, November 29th from 7pm-9pm at Doddington Medical Centre, 11D Benwick Road, PE15 0TG. All patients of Fenland Group Practice, Manea, Doddington and Wimblington surgeries, are welcome to come to this free event, which will be attended by a representative from the medical practice. It is an opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and to hear about the latest developments at the practice.

The open meeting will be followed by the annual meeting which people are welcome to stay for. At the AGM current chairman Jill Tuck will be stepping down after five years of service. Vice-chairman – and former Discovering March editor – Jaqui Fairfax has put her name forward for election as chairman.

If any patient would like to be considered for a role on the committee, they should contact the group.

The PPG invites speakers to come and impart information and answer questions about healthrelated topics. If there is a health issue that patients want to know more about they should contact the committee and let it know the subject that is of interest.

FENLAND BREWS UP A STORM FOR MACMILLAN Councillors, staff and residents helped raise cash for charity when Fenland District Council hosted a series of events in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

FOCUSING ON FENLAND TRANSPORT What are Fenland’s rural transport needs and how could these be better met in future?

These will be just two of the questions asked when a new series of public meetings is launched by the Fenland Transport and Access Group (TAG) and Fenland District Council.

The five Transport Focus Group meetings will enable in-depth discussion on different transport topics including travel by rail, road and bus, as well as walking and cycling.

It will also build on the success of Fenland’s first Transport Conference last year which explored ways in which the local network can be improved, and highlighted the need for ongoing public engagement.

The meetings will be held at Fenland Hall, County Road, March, on the following dates: Thursday November 1st 2018: 1pm-3pm (railway) Thursday November 8th 2018: 10am to noon (local highways)

More than £1280 was raised for the cause, which is the chosen charity of council chairman Cllr Kay Mayor, for her year in office.

The first fundraiser in September was a Big Quiz night at the council’s New Vision Fitness George Campbell Centre in March. Teams of four went head-to-head in a battle of the brains, with £265 being raised towards the total.

Then Cllr Mayor invited everyone to join her at Fenland Hall, March, for her World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event.

Freshly-baked cakes and sausage rolls were on sale, and there was also a raffle with more than 80 prizes and dress down day for staff.

Local residents joined councillors and staff on the morning, along with North East Cambridgeshire MP Steve Barclay.

Bonfire Night

The Eco-Friendly Way to Enjoy Bonfire Night

emember, remember the 5th of November! Guy Fawkes night is here once again so it only seems right to discuss fireworks!

Fireworks are beautiful and mesmerising and used for all sorts of occasions and over the years they have become more and more developed and spectacular. However, they come at a cost – and not just in terms of money. To get the stunning colours, chemicals are added to the fireworks and in lots of cases these chemicals are toxic. When these chemicals are released into the air they pollute the atmosphere and the environment.

A modern firework consists of a shell of plastic, papier-mache, or heavy paper surrounding compartments separated by cardboard. That’s a lot of recyclable material that has to be wasted due to contamination from the chemicals!

The UK spends billions of pounds on fireworks each year, with average fireworks displays costing cities between £10,000 - £16,000. Not only is that a lot of money, it’s a lot of single use recyclable material going to landfill. Inevitably, a large percentage of this will also end up in waterways and pollute the countryside.

This year, why not take an eco-approach? Get the kids involved and make some fireworks out of recycled materials such as plastic bottles and cardboard tubes – Pinterest is full of creative and fun ideas. Or, find some beautiful crunchy autumnal leaves and pretend they’re fireworks

by throwing them in the air! These alternatives are so simple but will provide lots of fun as well as teaching children about recycling, reducing waste and getting the family outside in the autumn air!

Or, if you are holding your own display, try and buy fireworks that are sold in recyclable packaging such as cardboard boxes. Make sure you dispose of your fireworks safely by leaving them in water for 48 hours to allow all the explosive components to become inert. Then they can be placed in your green bin.

How Could Acupuncture Help You? Acupuncture is widely considered to be beneficial for a range of illnesses and symptoms.

As one of the safest medical treatments, both conventional and complementary, on offer in the UK, many people use acupuncture for help with specific symptoms or conditions. OVER 60 LOCAL TEACHERS RECEIVE FREE TRAINING THANKS TO OPPORTUNITY AREA FUNDING – By Steve Barclay MP

I

n January of last year, the Department of Education announced that Fenland and East Cambridgeshire was going to be one of just 12 areas in the country to be designated as an ‘Opportunity Area.’ With this, came an additional £6 million funding for our schools and priority access to other Department of Education funding.

Now almost two years into the programme, the Department for Education Opportunity Area has announced promising new figures from the last academic year’s programme of activity in Fenland and East Cambridgeshire including:

• More than 60 teachers in our area are now embarking on National Professional Qualifications completely free of charge.

These qualifications would usually cost a school between £450 and £7000 and give teachers the opportunity to increase their skills, confidence and knowledge in a range of areas including leadership, STEM subjects, phonics and managing challenging pupil behaviour. These schemes will help teachers to develop their careers and go on to benefit the children they teach.

• 51 schools in our area (primary, secondary and special) are now involved in evidence-

based action research projects which will help to improve outcomes for their most disadvantaged pupils.

• 13 schools in our area were supported to offer incentives to fill vacancies and 21 Teach First trainees were placed.

An exciting new programme of work is now being carried out for local schools which include: • YMCA mental health training for schools and parents.

• A marketing campaign to attract more teachers to our area and to entice members of the Fenland and East Cambridgeshire community to consider a career in teaching.

• Parental engagement sessions.

• Phonics training.

• Further training for teaching assistants.

This progress helps work towards our goal to ensure that all of our local children have the opportunity to unlock their full potential. I will be meeting with local headteachers again to discuss how we make the most of the Opportunity Area Programme and to hear more about how I can support teachers.

Steve Fox stopped smoking tobacco after being diagnosed with a melanoma and lymphoma five years ago.

Remembering World War 1 War poet, Wilfred Owen’s ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’, written in 1917, includes the haunting image of soldiers “who die as cattle”, whilst facing the “monstrous anger of the guns” and the “stuttering rifles’ rapid rattle”. Later in the poem, he refers to the “bugles calling for them (the soldiers in the trenches of Northern France) from sad shires”.

As we look back, 100 years on from the ending of World War 1, we can think of the families left behind, as their menfolk answered the call to arms, and think just what the conflict must have meant for those ordinary people in ordinary places like Bourne and its surrounding villages, with the bugles sounding in our own shire – Lincolnshire.

The sheer scale of the casualties alone is one of the most humbling features of this “war to end all wars”. We have heard of literally millions of deaths - British and Commonwealth, German, French, Russian and many other nationalities caught up in the conflict. However, when we look much nearer to home, it soon makes us realise just what this war meant to small towns and villages hereabouts.

It is estimated that in Bourne alone, with its population of 4,343, (1911 census), around 250 men left the area to fight … and a staggering 46% failed to return! In almost every church in the vicinity, there are poignant memorials which illustrate just how universal was the devastation wreaked on communities, large and small.

The following list gives just a brief indication of how widespread were the effects of the war. The figures have been drawn from the actual memorials found in each of the village churches mentioned. However, it is likely that the true death toll was much higher, as research completed after the memorials had been erected often revealed discrepancies:

Your Garden

NOVEMBER Gardening Tips November is not the best of months to be spending time outside, as the days are getting shorter and the weather is on the decline. However, time spent in the vegetable plot now will pay off in the spring and make your job easier. Weeds never seem to stop growing but will slow down considerably over the winter months, so it is a good idea to clear them now so that they don’t get a head start in spring.

Make sure that the plot is clear of summer crops; don’t leave them to rot, as this can increase the risk of disease and harbour unwanted pests. November is a good time to give the soil some attention; if you wait any longer the soil could be waterlogged or too cold. Once you have cleared the weeds and any old crops, fork the soil over and add compost or manure to help replace nutrients in the soil. I then cover the area with either weed suppressant or plastic, which will keep the weeds at bay and the soil warmer for planting in the spring.

Another important task for November is pruning, as fruit trees and bushes have shed their leaves and are dormant for the winter; also remove any netting from fruit cages to allow the birds to eat insects and eggs. Bare-rooted fruit trees, bushes and canes are also dormant and therefore, now is the time to plant them whilst the ground is not too wet or cold.

Other tasks for this month include:• Propagate rhubarb crowns by lifting and dividing in to smaller pieces, planting at the same depth in their new position.

• Plan the crop rotation for next year. Planting one group of vegetables in the same ground, year after year, increases the risk of a build-up of disease. There are websites that provide planners; one such example is http://gardenplanner. suttons.co.uk • Dismantle bean canes, if you haven’t already, as leaving them in the ground will cause the bases to rot.

• Leaf mould makes good mulch and at this time of year there are plenty to be had. You can easily make a cage to contain the leaves using four stakes and stapling chicken wire around them. Just throw the leaves in and leave them for a year to rot down. Or put them together with a bit of soil into a black plastic bag - make a few small holes.

• Start to harvest winter cabbage, Brussels sprouts, leeks and parsnips; wait until after a frost for the parsnips, as the frost encourages the sugars which give parsnips their sweetness.

• Plant garlic cloves, early “overwintering” broad beans, (either in the ground or in pots), peas, shallots and onions.

• Prepare a runner bean trench for all of your kitchen waste.

Restrictive Covenants Explained

When dealing with clients’ property transactions I am frequently asked: “It is my property… why can I not erect a shed in my garden without consent of the developer or keep a caravan on my drive without seeking the original developer’s consent?”

I understand it, I had similar thoughts when I bought my first house, however I was aware of the importance of complying with restrictive covenants and the consequences I could face should I decide to “break the rules”.

My property forms part of an estate which consists of more than 100 homes. Each property on the estate was sold subject to certain restrictive covenants which include… not to erect a satellite dish on the front of the property... not to park a caravan or motor home within the boundaries of the property... not to make any structural alteration to the property without the prior written consent of the developer… and so on.

Restrictive covenants are put in place with good intentions to protect the aesthetic appearance of the estate as a whole. The developer has invested time and money to create homes that will be sold and bought multiple times over with the view that attractive homes on attractive estates will attract buyers.

When you buy a property which is registered at HM Land Registry you are given a copy of your title information document which may refer to other documents such as a Transfer of Part or Conveyance. These documents will comprise your deeds and some could contain restrictive covenants. Although these documents are not attached to the title information document, any document referred to should always be kept with and read in conjunction with the title information document.

If you are considering making alterations to your property, it is sensible to check your deeds to make sure you do not require the developer’s consent.

Remember that you may also require planning permission or building regulations consent from the local authority.

Many homeowners have breached their covenants in some way and if you think that you have, you can write to the enforcer of the covenant (in many cases the developer) and ask them for retrospective consent. Alternatively, you can take out restrictive covenant indemnity insurance to cover the costs of legal proceedings if the developer takes you to court for non-compliance.

It is worth noting that the precedent set by Hepworth v Pickles (1900) states that in a situation where a restrictive covenant has been openly and uninterruptedly broken for more than 20 years, it will be presumed that a waiver or release of such covenant has been granted.

If you are concerned that you are in breach of a restrictive covenant or want to alter your property in ways that could possibly breach a restrictive covenant, I strongly recommend seeking legal advice.

Method

Ingredients

• Insert a wooden skewer or lolly stick into the stalk end of each apple. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment.

• Put the sugar in a heavy-based pan with 120ml cold water and heat gently, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and add the vinegar, butter and golden syrup. Stamp Duty Overhaul Needed?

According to the latest government figures, stamp duty receipts rose by 10 percent in the last financial year, 2017/2018. The average amount raised in tax per residential property sale now stands at a staggering £8400.

Some £13 billion was paid to HMRC last year, with £2 billion coming from the higher 3% second home duty and £5 billion from the London market.

Seventy thousand transactions incurred no tax at all as they were first time buyers who claimed the stamp duty relief. However, the National Association of Estate Agents has reported that

sales to first time buyers have hit a three-year low, so clearly something isn’t working.

The Government is trying to find a solution to the never-ending problem of house price increases. Surely, they’ve realised that market demands will determine prices in a free market economy and should be left to itself.

Maybe, what they should do is build more council houses from the money they’ve raised to help alleviate the pressure on the rental sector.

Village Life

Lest We Forget – by Jayne Whytock

N

ovember 11th marks the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War One, making this year even more poignant.

The War Memorial at St Peter’s Church carries the names of 34 men, and one woman (35 in total) from Wimblington who gave their lives to allow us to live in a free and democratic society.

When you read the names, you see that a lot of them were young men and all of them would have had loved ones who mourned their passing. Many are buried overseas in France, Belgium, Egypt and Africa. For those families there was no grave they could go to at special times like birthdays, anniversaries or Christmas. In a small village (as Wimblington was during both wars) their passing would have impacted upon the whole community.

Many would have known them, gone to school with them or lived in the same street as them.

Can you imagine what it must have been like to have the majority of our menfolk away at war, not knowing if they would ever return?

The only way you knew where they were fighting was if you were lucky enough to get the occasional letter. No mobile phones, no Skype, no way of knowing what was happening. The fear of that telegram saying ‘Missing in action’ or ‘Presumed killed in action’ to me is unimaginable.

We watch conflicts that are happening around the world now and think how terrible it must be for the people involved, but with human nature as it is we 40

quickly move on to what’s happening in our own lives. Today our servicemen and women receive much more support (but not enough) if they return from conflict injured. They get physiotherapy to help them adjust to life with lost or damaged limbs and there is support for these that have mental issues due to the things they have witnessed. But those returning from the two World Wars didn’t have these things. It was a case of just having to get on with it. No support getting work if they had physical injuries, no helplines if they were struggling with post-traumatic stress syndrome.

At Thomas Eaton Primary School every child has created a poppy to commemorate Remembrance Day. All their fantastic work is displayed and can also be seen on their Facebook page.

There is also an event at the Parish Hall during the first week of November where villagers both young and old can make and display poppies made out of anything from Lego to pastry.

On Remembrance Sunday there will be a parade to the church were poppies and wreathes can be placed at the War Memorial.

So, on November 11th at 11am when the country falls silent to honour our fallen take a moment to remember that in our village we lost many young (and not so young) men. They had their lives in front of them but paid the ultimate price for their generation and every generation that followed.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. RIP.

Don’t Leave Your Elderly Neighbours in the Dark At this point in the year, the clocks have gone back and we start to think more about winter – and the ideal time to get into the habit of keeping an eye on an older friend or neighbour. The winter months can be lonely and isolating for those who are less mobile; a knock at the door after dark can be frightening, and cold callers on the phone can leave the recipient feeling vulnerable. The situation isn’t helped by the many rogue traders who try to tout for work in the local area, often suggesting to the home owner that a roof or guttering are in need of repair before winter sets in. This can lead to vulnerable people parting with their cash and getting nothing but shoddy work and a huge dent in their savings in return.

Then there are phone scams, which may on the surface seem to be less intrusive, but are equally as dangerous. These can range from callers claiming to be from companies to check non-existent faults on your computer, banks claiming to check your account details and even so-called medical companies, suggesting the need for mobile aids, from electric chairs to stair lifts.

Griffin Inn 1686

W

ho stole a bob-tailed gelding from the Griffin Inn more than 300 years ago?

The theft was reported in the London Gazette of Monday, January 10th 1686: ‘Taken out of the Griffin Inn stable the first instant in the town of March in the Isle of Ely, a brown gelding bobtailed, about nine years old, thirteen hands and a half high, something low backed, a small star in his forehead, a little yellow about his eyes, a brown nose with a crack overthwart his off hoof before, supposed to have been taken away by a tall lusty man with fair hair, full eyes and 24 or 25 years of age. Whoever gives notice either of the man or horse to Mr Samuel Keeble at the Griffin Inn aforesaid, or to Mr Thomas Urdall at the Swan With

Two Necks in Turtle Street, Westminster, SHALL HAVE A GUINEA.’ Horse thefts were common. One wonders how the fair-haired rogue made out. If he was aware of the advertisement, it’s a fair bet he would give the Swan-With-Two-Necks a wide berth. If he was rundown to earth in the Isle of Ely and had escaped infamous Tyburn and its scaffold, he would have faced the gibbet at Guyhirn beside the road to Peterborough and left there to hang until birds pecked him to the bone as a dire warning to others.

Murderers, thieves and highwaymen were strung up at Guyhirn by the local hangman. An old saying locally was this: “Go to Guyhirn Patrick and see your brothers hang.” Several felons met their end there.

Software and Hardware Explained This month Oliver continues last month’s article with his feature on ‘software’.

There are two main components in a computer that make it function, one is software and the other hardware. Hardware is anything you can touch, e.g. the keyboard and mouse, but the software is all the things you can’t touch for example, Microsoft Windows 10 or Microsoft Word. You may think then software isn’t as important as hardware, but it is! If you can’t use the software on a computer because it’s too confusing or complicated, then you won’t be able to use your computer properly.

The different types of software used on any type of computer would be an antivirus/antimalware, word processing, a spreadsheet program, an internet browser and, perhaps, some other bits of software.

The most common antivirus and antimalware you can get are programs like Microsoft Defender, McAfee or Norton, they all work in the same way, removing viruses, malware, trojans etc. from your computer and making sure it’s secure. Also, there are specific adware removal programs, e.g., HitMan, Adware Removal Programme by TSA, and various other software.

Word processing and spreadsheet software normally come in a package deal with thing like Microsoft Office that contains Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access etc. But that now costs £79.99 a year and again you would have to renew that every year. In our software build we have a program that allows you to do all the things you can with the full Microsoft Office package that you don’t

have to renew meaning you can spend more time on typing up what you need rather than renewing the subscription. Free alternatives available include Libre Office and OpenOffice Writer, to name but two.

An internet browser is essential to a computer as it allows you to use services like Google, so you can surf the internet. There are many web browsers available including, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox and Opera. The main differences between them are speed and security, and, in my opinion, Chrome is far superior in this aspect giving up to 50 percent speed improvements from IE meaning the pictures/ site you just looked for will load even quicker.

On Chrome they will also be delivered to your computer in a more secure environment meaning you don’t have to worry about hackers getting the information from your browser.

The ‘Great Storm’ of 1937

Elm Road: suffered during the ‘Great Storm’ of 1937

O

n the night of May 25th, 1937 and the afternoon of the following day, March experienced some of the most violent storms in living memory.

During Tuesday's storm torrential rain was accompanied by vivid lightning that lit up the sky continuously. Almost an inch of rain was recorded.

The sunshine of the following morning gave way to leaden skies. The district was again swept by an amazing downfall of rain and hail. It was so heavy that, at times, it was impossible to see across the street. In half an hour over half an inch of rain fell – the equivalent to 58 tons of water per acre.

Fields and gardens were flooded and everywhere fruit tree blossom was ruined. Arable land had standing water between furrows where drainage to the dykes was prevented. Sugar beet, peas and strawberries were badly damaged.

There were many reports of flooded houses in the Fen and also in the town, where water was several inches deep, carpets and linoleum were

ruined, and furniture had to be saved. Some of the worst cases occurred in Elm Road, where a number of bungalows were flooded, especially the homes of Mr Cornwell and Mr Page. The fire brigade was brought in to pump flood water away but fortunately there were no reports of personal injuries.

The storm on Wednesday afternoon brought with it hurricane winds and trees were severely affected.

A tall tree in High Street was brought down in the road and in County Road a lightning strike also felled a tree.

The district around Stag's Holt appears to have caught the worst of the gale where several tall poplar trees were brought down. An elderly resident of the district commented ''that he could not remember having seen anything like it before and did not want to again.”
