Introduction

Welcome to Your October Issue.

From speaking to people in the town – and also eavesdropping – I know how many of you enjoy reading about bygone March.

We are fortunate that our regular contributors unearth interesting stories from the past and bring them to a new audience. I believe the stories help foster a sense of community and it is always fascinating to discover the origins of buildings and monuments in the town.

A couple of weeks ago I spoke with Peter Jackman, who, aged 88, is a well-known figure in the town, about his efforts to reinstate a memorial for a doctor who saved his life when he was a boy. You can read all about his efforts to mark the work in the community of Doctor William Frith on page 38, but the basic facts are that Dr Frith helped many poor families in March back in the 1930s but tragically lost his own life aged just 38 in 1938.

It is tribute to Dr Frith that his good deeds were recognised then and should still be recognised today. Well done Peter and also local stone mason Richard King who never charged for his work in making a plaque in tribute to the doctor.

You can tell that autumn has arrived when Strictly comes back on the TV and the shops are full of Hallowe'en gear.

Hallowe'en seems more popular nowadays than it was a few years ago. In the recent past it was a prelude to autumn's big event – Bonfire Night, but now it seems to have eclipsed November 5th.

For many children – and adults – dressing up for Hallowe'en is something to look forward to along with ‘trick or treating’.

But as Jayne Whytock points out in her column on page 32 for some people answering the door to a group of heavily made-up ghouls can be quite a scary surprise.

So, if you plan to go out trick or treating, have fun but please be aware that not everyone will share your enthusiasm for Hallowe'en.

Eat the Season

GAMEKEEPER'S PIE This mash-topped stew uses a mix of game meat but if you would prefer to use one in particular, that will work too. Use a more matured meat for a stronger game flavour.

Ingredients 50g butter

1 tbsp olive oil 1 large onion, chopped 2 carrots, chopped 700g mixed game meat (partridge, pigeon, pheasant, rabbit and hare all work well), deboned and cut into 3cm pieces 300g pack venison sausages (about 6 sausages), removed from their skins 2 tbsp plain flour 1 tbsp tomato purée 150ml red wine 500ml chicken or beef stock 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 bay leaf 4 tsp thyme leaf, chopped 400g potato, cut into chunks 600g mixed root vegetables (use parsnips, celeriac, swede or turnips), cut into chunks 2 tbsp milk

Method

• Heat half the butter and the oil in a large pan, add the onion and carrots, and cook for about 10 mins until soft. Add the game and sausagemeat to the pan. Turn up the heat, squash the meat with the back of your spoon to break it up, and cook for 10 mins until nicely browned.

• Stir the flour and tomato purée into the meat, cook for 1 min, then add the wine, stock, sauce, bay and 3 tsp thyme. Bring to a simmer, reduce the heat, cover with a lid and cook for 1 hr. Remove the lid and cook for 15 mins more until the meat is tender and the sauce has thickened.

• Put the potatoes and veg in a large pan, cover with water, bring to the boil and cook for 20 mins until really tender. Drain, leave to steam for 5 mins, then mash with seasoning, milk and the remaining butter.

• Heat oven to 220˚C/200˚C fan/gas 7. Tip the meat into an ovenproof dish and spoon on the mash.

Sprinkle with the remaining thyme and bake for 45 mins until the top is golden and the sauce bubbling.

Liz said: “We have lots of ideas for The Cock. At The Buffs we have a number of teams, such as darts, dominoes, pool and crib. At the moment there’s only a pool team at The Cock so we want to try and introduce more of them.

“It’s been hard work since taking over The Cock but we’re gradually getting there and are getting most of the regular customers to come back to the pub. We want to make it a real family pub and put on more functions”

One of March’s best-known pubs has new tenants.

Toni Williamson (30) and Liz Hayes (49) have recently taken over the The Cock Inn in High Street and are determined to make the Elgoods pub a family-friendly establishment.

The women are well-known in the local licensing trade as they also run The Buffs public house in Robingoodfellow’s Lane.

Toni said: “Although we have taken on The Cock, we want to reassure everyone that we are still running The Buffs and that one of us will be at each premises every day. At the moment I’m spending more time at The Buffs and Liz is at The Cock.”

The 18th century Cock Inn has a bar and a family/ function room as well as a massive child-friendly beer garden, which are available free to hire for customers who then use the pub's facilities.

Toni added: “We want to have live music in the future and will also be offering special promotions which will be featured on our Facebook page.”

Toni has been running The Buffs for the past eight years with Liz working alongside her for five years and becoming her business partner two years ago.

They have recently introduced a new food menu at The Cock offering good quality pub grub, such as steak and ale pie, moussaka and Hunter's chicken, and are planning to introduce Tapas Tuesdays.

Toni said: “We are offering good pub food done well, with a lot of the food prepared on site. It is the kind of food you would expect to get in a pub and we are also doing roasts on Sundays.”

Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa, and is renowned for its beautiful mountainous landscape, diverse and delicious cuisine, and its extensive range of activities and attractions. The best time to visit Cape Town, (if you’re after some sun), is between December and February, giving you temperatures from 25°C to 32°C. Alternatively, if you travel between September and October, you will witness the blankets of blooming springtime flowers that cover the province. Be sure to visit Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens, where you’ll find the Tree Canopy Walkway, a scenic bridge that takes visitors from the forest floor up through the trees, giving picturesque panoramic views.

TOP PLACES TO VISIT: Table Mountain Table Mountain is a spectacular sight all-year-round; whether it’s a clear blue day or covered with a blanket of cloud,

and you’re guaranteed to see at least one great white shark. If swimming with the sharks is a bit too extreme for your liking, you can take a day trip to Hermanus and experience whale watching from the coast. The best months to see the Humpback whales are between June and December.

All the tour guides were once political prisoners, so you’ll also be treated to personal and first-hand stories. The tour ends with a visit Nelson Mandela’s cell.

Boulders Beach Boulders Beach is one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches, and it isn’t hard to see why. The soft sandy beach is well-kept and can be quiet; however, its colony of African penguins tends to bring in the crowds. You can do a lot more than just watch the penguins, you can even swim with them! The best time to see them is during the breeding season, February to August, (peaking from March to May); however, they are visible all-year-round.

Would regular stretching benefit you or help improve your sport?

Do you feel that some of your muscles are too tight, or it is difficult to move freely?

2 INCREASE MUSCLE TONE Stretching is a powerful signal to strengthen muscles. Using the muscle’s strength in passive resistance, stretching accelerates the speed at which the proteins that make up the muscle fibres are made. So your body gains muscle tone, strength, and resilience this way.

3 WARM UP BEFORE A WORKOUT Stretching can be part of a warm up of the muscles, tendons, and joints, which prepares the body for physical exertion or activity.

4 RELIEVE STRESS Thanks to its euphoric and oxygenating effects, stretching minimises stress that can tighten muscles.

It is also great to stretch out tight neck and shoulder muscles when working at a desk, or in the same position for long periods of time.

5 RELAX, RECUPERATE, AND PREVENT INJURIES The majority of muscular efforts compress various joints as well as the spine. Stretching helps to decompress your back as well as your joints.

This prevents injuries while speeding recovery of the joints, tendons, and muscles.

We can help you – our sports and massage therapists offer an appointment to assess you, to identify tight muscles that may restrict how you move and increase your risk of injury. They will produce a customised exercise programme to include a range of stretches that will be beneficial for you, and show you how to do these safely and effectively. You will receive a copy of the programme, so you can continue your recommended exercises at home.

This would also be useful for people who have recently taken up a new sport, or who are trying to help prevent injury, and may be beneficial in addition to sports massage therapy.

Swimming is something people generally think of doing in the warmer weather, but swimming can also be a great option in the colder months.

Swimming can provide a fantastic all-body workout. While being low impact on joints, it’s also an activity that’s good for the whole family whatever your pace or style.

Swimming can be an affordable and flexible way to get fit with varied pool times to suit different lifestyles, whether you plan to be an early bird or squeeze a swim in a lunchtime or bring the kids on a weekend.

So, you’re considering swimming, what now…?

March has its own swimming pool at the George Campbell Leisure Centre with a varied programme that can be found on www.newvisonfittness.com All you really need to get started is swimwear; try to pick something that fits well and is comfortable to move in. Many local supermarkets and shops now have good inexpensive options to suit most of the family’s needs, you can also often pick up reduced swimwear this time of year. If you wish to

cover up, towels or dressing gowns can be brought onto poolside. If you wear contact lenses, a pair of goggles may also be a good investment – you can also find prescription ones at some opticians.

Swim with a friend or family member; like many other fitness sessions, going with someone can help you stay motivated but unlike other activities you can often fit in a chat while swimming the odd length.

Old School Horrors!

Now I know this isn’t the typical beauty column you guys are used to seeing but it is the month of October, which means one thing… HALLOWE'EN! So, if you are looking for beauty advice or ‘pretty’ makeup, please come back next month, but if you like nothing more than some creepy Hallowe'en make-up please keep reading.

I have such a soft spot for the old horror films; I’m talking A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Child's Play, Final Destination and Halloween.

Nothing gets me in the mood for Hallowe'en more than a marathon of these classics and although they are laughable now, growing up this is what we always used to watch for a good old scare fest!

This year I’m going to do a Hallowe'en make-up series celebrating the all-time greats, Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Chucky and Michael Myers.

So, here’s a sneak peek at the first one, Jason Voorhees, a boy who drowned at Camp Crystal Lake due to the negligence of the camp staff.

Decades later, the lake is rumoured to be ‘cursed’ and is the setting for a series of mass murders.

FENLAND LEADS THE WAY IN HELPING PEOPLE TO GET ACTIVE – By Steve Barclay MP

N

ow the school holidays are over, it is a good time of year to take up a new sport or become more active. Active Fenland is leading the way in helping people to get active which is both good for their health and provides good fun through taking up new hobbies.

I have seen first-hand the fantastic impact Active Fenland has had on our community since 2015, after I secured £250,000 for the council to fund the three-year project and drive participation in sport. The project has performed well for three years and as a result, received further funding from Public Health, Sport England and the Controlling Migration Fund to further build on its success.

Active Fenland is seeing huge community benefits from some of its current projects which include co-ordination classes for Reception pupils at Peckover Primary School (Wisbech), chair-based exercise classes for elderly residents at Bradshaw Court (March) and buggy fitness classes for mums (currently available in March and soon going to Wisbech).

The Active Fenland team has also supported the development of Parkrun in Whittlesey and

the Junior Parkrun in Wisbech and has some excellent new projects in the pipeline, such as working with local businesses to promote staying active and being healthy in the workplace.

Greencore (Wisbech) has already signed up to this and I look forward to hearing how the programme benefits the employees who work there.

If you are interested in taking up a new sport, meeting new people and being more active, I urge you to get involved in some of the activities which Active Fenland is providing in your local area. No matter what your age, ability or level of mobility there is something on offer, from walking football, chair-based exercises, beginners’ running sessions and activities for children.

Tropical Colours for New-Build Apartment – by Interior Designer & Writer, Yasmin Chopin

Miya, a dental surgeon from Trinidad, had bought a new-build apartment by the river.

She was desperate to introduce colour and called me in to help.

The room was not quite square but trapezoid, with kitchen units along one wall. Though the shape was a little awkward the light was fantastic. Up high with a balcony painted in glaring yellow I knew I could make this space into the perfect home. She told me her likes and dislikes and showed me a few of her favourite pieces; some art glass, an embroidered footstool, a few pictures. From these I was able to take my inspiration and design the room with flexibility in mind. ‘Cottons, linens and silks,’ Miya said. ‘I want it homely and warm, not bland.’

The open plan area of approximately 27 square metres had to serve as both a cooking and entertaining area and be welcoming and relaxing for Miya after a long day at work. An L-shaped sofa

is the key item of furniture and a custom-made round rug fits snugly on the floor beside it. In the dining area a chunky table with four luxury leather chairs add a touch of style, especially charming when the floor-to-ceiling drape is drawn. Evening meals can be light and bright in the summer or romantically cosy in winter.

As this was a brand-new apartment we didn’t need to change the lighting or the floor covering but a softer ambience is achieved with a few additional lamps; an architectural floor lamp and an African print table lamp fitted my concept perfectly.

Oh yes, of course… the mural. The mural is the wow factor! Miya put her trust in me and we are both chuffed to bits with it. When you start an interior design scheme with a wacky yellow balcony you just know it’s going to be fun!

Why Should I Form a Company?

A Guide to Incorporation for Small Businesses

Limited companies can create ‘floating charges’ over the assets of the business; this is a special type of security given to the lender which allows them to recover the debt from non-permanent assets such as stock, work in progress or cash. Companies also have other ways to raise finance, including selling shares in the business which allows them to raise capital without borrowing money. There is also a range of other options not open to partnerships and sole traders.

Many small business owners wonder whether it would benefit them to form a limited company or if it is better for their business to remain as a sole trader or partnership.

Often the legal and financial jargon can seem baffling and the consequences don’t always seem clear. The fact that incorporation is governed by the Companies Act 2006, the longest piece of legislation ever produced by Parliament, can make the idea of creating a company seem like more trouble than it’s worth. While incorporation isn’t for everyone it can bring a lot of benefits, some of which I will outline below.

Many people decide to incorporate because it limits their personal liability. Before forming a company, sole traders and partnerships are completely responsible for any debts and liabilities their business incurs.

An incorporated company has its own legal personality and as such, employs its own staff, enters its own agreements and incurs its own debts. Shareholders are only liable for the amount unpaid on any shares they buy but as most shares are paid up in advance, company owners are generally more able to walk away if things go wrong.

Incorporation brings a wider range of options for raising finance than a sole trader or a partnership has. If a sole trader needs a cash injection to kick-start, grow or rescue their business they are limited to borrowing money, either from friends and family or a bank loan.

With partnerships and sole traders, the organisation within the business can become muddled. Often there is no defined structure that separates out the departments, regulates internal and external relations and ensures continuous review and management of affairs. An enterprise where roles are not clearly defined can create tensions which could risk the whole business if uncorrected.

An incorporated business has an inbuilt structure which is flexible enough to adapt to the market yet solid enough not to be ignored. A good example of this is the distinction between the owners (shareholders) and managers (directors) although these can be the same people.

A company can also create subsidiary companies to further limit financial exposure and delegate parts of the business to different sub-companies. This is particularly important for those looking to grow their business into a large company.

Incorporation isn’t right for every business; it is important to consider initial and ongoing costs, management, filing annual accounts and whether incorporation coincides with the size, financial position and objectives of the business. There are other ways to structure a business without forming a company.

OCTOBER Gardening Tips Remember that the clocks go back at the end of this month, so make as much use as possible of daylight hours before winter sets in. This month sees jobs that are mainly clearing the plot ready for the winter months, plenty of digging and manuring. Harvest or protect any remaining crops that are susceptible to frosts, and clear away any remaining debris and place on the compost heap: the larger the quantity, the better, as this helps the heap to warm up and accelerates the rotting process. It is advisable to shred or pulverize thick, woody stems such as sweetcorn, beans and brassicas, so that they decompose more quickly. Do not put any diseased foliage on the compost heap; burn or discard it.

Once the plot has been dug over, manure or fertilise it, and then cover the soil with plastic or weed suppressant for the winter, as this keeps the weeds at bay and, as it keeps the soil relatively warm, planting can start earlier in the spring. There is no need to dig in the manure as it will get drawn down into the soil over the winter months. An alternative to covering the soil is to plant green manures that will overwinter and can be dug in in the spring.

October is perfect for dividing large oversized crowns of rhubarb and also the perfect time for moving or planting new fruit bushes and trees.

Bare-rooted trees will benefit from the warmth still left in the soil.

Crops that can be sown this month are:• early broad beans.

• rhubarb crowns.

• Japanese over-wintering onion sets. Although large onion sets look stronger, small or medium ones are less likely to bolt in the spring.

• Last chance to transplant spring cabbages –be sure to net them to prevent pigeons eating the young leaves.

• Plant garlic if you haven’t already done so.

• Broad beans –early varieties should overwinter.

Other jobs for this month include:• Continue to earth up celery and leeks.

• Protect cauliflowers by bending a leaf over the curd.

• Finish pruning blackberries and raspberries.

• Keep removing yellow leaves from brassicas –leaving them on the ground risks spreading grey mould.

• If you haven’t already done so, earth up or stake, (or both), Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli plants.

• Pick all of the unripe tomatoes and put a few in a bag with a ripe banana –this gives off ethylene gas which speeds ripening.

• Cure pumpkins and squashes – cut and leave them to dry out in the sun; it hardens the skins and they will keep for longer.

• Cut back asparagus and artichoke foliage and compost.

T

he nights are drawing in and it will soon be time for Hallowe'en, trick or treat, bobbing for apples and dressing up.

Hallowe'en is steeped in myths and folklore and goes back to Celtic and pagan times.

The tradition marked the end of summer and the harvest season and the start of the long winter months. The Celts believed that this was the time when the souls of the departed were free to roam in the land of the living. To avoid unwelcome visits from evil spirits, people dressed in ghostly costumes to fool them into thinking they were also one of the departed. Parades were held in villages in an attempt to lead the unwanted evil away.

Nowadays people dress up just for fun and each year the costumes and make-up seem to get more elaborate and scarier.

Trick or treating is thought to have started with the baking of ‘soul cakes’ which were made as an offering to the spirits. These were given to the poor who would then pray for the departed. Later on, the tradition evolved where men would go around the village knocking on doors and offering to sing in exchange for food or drink.

The tradition of bobbing for apples is thought to have started as a way to find out who would be next to marry. The fruit was either hung from a tree

or put in a barrel of water. Everyone had a go at trying to bite the apple without using their hands and the first person to succeed would be the next to wed. Today this is obviously done just for fun – well, let’s hope so!

Pumpkin carving is also very popular and once hollowed out and a candle placed inside they are put outside or in windows to ward off the evil spirits.

As with many celebrations and events that have their origins set in times long past, over the years the true meanings have been forgotten and they have been adapted to modern times. Now we stock up on sweets for children knocking at the door and it is all about fun and excitement.

Today many people decorate their houses and it is becoming as exciting to see them as Christmas decorations. In Wimblington, one of the best places to see houses festooned with witches, cobwebs and all that is scary is Honeymead and Greenwood Way. Children of all ages dress up and people from the area come out to join in the evening.

Hallowe'en is a great time for a bit of fun, but always remember that for some people it can be frightening to have ghosts and ghouls appearing at their door so if you don’t get an answer to your knocking or ringing of a doorbell just walk away and watch out you don’t bump into a real ghost on your night out!

Renting doesn’t have to mean you are throwing away money, in the same way that buying a home isn’t always the right decision at certain times in your life. Here are seven reasons why we think renting might be the better option for you.

Your landlord is usually responsible for all maintenance and repair costs, ensuring you don’t have the financial responsibility to get these things fixed.

2 No large down-payment. The move-in costs for a tenant are much lower than having to find a deposit to buy a house.

Doctor William John Frith

March man has successfully campaigned for a memorial to be reinstated to the doctor who saved his life when he was a child.

Peter Jackman (88) wanted to mark the work in the community of Doctor William Frith who helped many poor families in the town in the 1930s.

A drinking fountain was put up in what is now The Avenue Recreation Field in memory of Dr Frith who died aged just 38 in 1938, but the fountain disappeared in the ensuing years leaving just the plinth with many local people now being unaware of what had originally been erected there.

Now with the help of a local stonemason, a memorial plaque, made of Balmoral Red Granite, has been put up in memory of the doctor.

Peter said: “I was the fourth of eight children and lived in a council house in Wimblington Road. I was apparently a sickly child and as there was no National Health Service in the 1930s it was a problem for my parents, Bill and Floss, with dad out of work.

“However, my mum always spoke highly of Dr Frith and credited him with saving my life. After Dr Frith died, a memorial fund raised over £30 and it was decided to erect a drinking fountain in the Stone Cross Recreational Ground. As a small boy, I passed the fountain every day on my way to school

and had many drinks from it. As the years went by, the fountain disappeared leaving only the plinth.

“Not many people are left who remember this excellent doctor and I wanted to see the plaque added to the plinth as a small part of preserving the history of March in memorial to Dr Frith.”

The esteem in which Dr Frith was held in the town was shown by the fact that 2000 people attended his funeral at a time when March had a population of just 12,000, with two lorries needed to carry all the flower tributes. Dr Frith, an Australian, is now buried in St Mary’s churchyard, March.

Peter was helped in his task by wife Gena and March funeral director Mark Turner who recommended local stonemason Richard King, of City Road, March, who gave his services free of charge.

Richard said: “I have been working alongside Mark in March for the past 10 years and I like to give a little bit back to the community, so I was only too pleased to help Peter as it was a really interesting story.”

Peter, of Waterside Gardens, is well-known in the March area, having spent 28 years driving a mobile library, and for his work in the local sports arena, founding both March Athletic Club and the March Table Tennis League in the 1970s.

SUNSET SPIN RAISES £1000 FOR MAGPAS Forty riders rode into the sunset as a Fenland leisure centre completed a hat-trick of Spinning events in aid of the Magpas Air Ambulance.

Sunset Spin was held last month for three hours outside the New Vision Fitness George Campbell Leisure Centre in March.

Riders from as far as Grantham, Bristol and Wales joined local enthusiasts to take on three Spinning classes during the event, with a spectacular sound and light show and glorious sunset despite the earlier cloudy weather.

Jamie-Lee Plumridge who donated the prize via her 3-year-old daughter to her husband!

The event raised a fantastic £1000 for the charity – taking the total amount raised from Spinning events at the George Campbell to more than £8500.

A 12-hour Spin-a-thon in January raised more than £5500 for the cause, and a six-hour event in 2017 raised £2000.

Saturday’s event was organised by leisure centre manager Andy Cornwell and the centre’s Spinning instructors Wayne Marshall, Tony Raine and Tracy Raine.

Crew members from Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue were in attendance to support their fellow firefighters Wayne and Tony, and to help illuminate the event and add some special effects. One of the crew, Liam Siddons, even took part in a ride with his firefighter kit on!

Andy Cornwell thanked all the volunteers who helped organise the event and helped with setting up, stewarding and packing away at the end of the night.

He also thanked Amy Thompson and her husband Darren who provided the sound system, DA Pallets Ltd for its generous donation of £200 and Tony Bird for loaning his disco lights and rig.

Special thanks were also paid to G’s Fresh Produce who donated a 50-inch TV for the raffle, which was won by George Campbell member Mick Barber and Alex Chapman for donating his Spinning Pro jersey to the raffle.

The ‘March Crows’ qualified by beating Chatteris, Wisbech and Cambridge St. Giles in the earlier rounds and then Redbourn from Hertfordshire in the semi-final but lost out to Luton Town and Indians CC in the final.

Club chairman Les Mills said: “The boys played very well to reach the Eastern Region Finals Day and although they fell short by 15 runs in the final we are very proud of their efforts. It was a great all-round team effort and they played some great cricket throughout the competition.”

Local History

The Hythe

nce there was an open waterway south from the river near the present Acre public house, to a point near St. Paul's chapel, opposite Scargells Lane and it was navigable for river barges.

Records, formerly held in the town, indicated that by 1849 it was partly bricked over and a report in 1853 said that it had been bricked over to form an arched tunnel. Access was at Smith's Mill on the river and it extended for 2120 feet and had an opening every 150ft. There were slight bends, one according to the 1853 report at ‘Brighty's slaughterhouse’ and it terminated at Scargells Yard.

The tunnel was 8ft high and 7ft 6 inches wide at the river, narrowing to 4ft 6ins high and 5ft wide at the other end. It is known as the Hythe. Eventually it was built over and ran under several dwelling houses, yards and gardens including the yard of 'The Shoulder of Mutton' public house. Apparently, several kitchens had access holes into the Hythe that had removable covers.

On Thursday, August 5th 1937, about a square yard of the surface at the top of Burrowmoor Road, next to the Windmill public house, collapsed into the Hythe, fortunately without injury to the public.

Repairs were made by reinforcing the tunnel with heavy timbers. Repair activities were watched by groups of adults and children, some of whom were allowed down into the tunnel for a glimpse of the work. One older resident told the Cambs Times newspaper reporter that he had ''made his way through as far as St. Peter's Road, although the latter part of the journey entailed an amount of back bending.”

A letter in the Cambs Times the following week from an 'anonymous ratepayer' expressed surprise that the Hythe was being patched up with railway sleepers – calling it a 'Jerry' method and considered it an unsound method of repair.

High Performance Gaming Towers: Advice & Guidance Firstly, we are very proud to announce that AA Whittlesey Computers Ltd is ranked in the ‘Top 3 Best Computer Shops in Peterborough’; in my opinion, quite an achievement.

Oliver is writing this month’s article and would like to explain what you should be looking for in a high-performance gaming tower.

You will require a multi-core CPU (central processor unit – the brains) and the more cores the better.

Your next decision is usually to decide whether you want an AMD or Intel CPU. I prefer Intel, e.g., Intel I5 8600K or I7 8086K, however at £450+ these are very expensive. A cheaper, and excellent alternative would be the equivalent AMD chip, e.g., Ryzen 3 2200G or Ryzen 5 2400G which are typically half the price of Intel, or, Len’s favourite, the AMD FX Black Edition (FX 8350/60/70) which feature eight cores and superb speed.

Next is your case, cooling system and fans. A reasonable gaming case will start at £80 although it is not unusual to pay up to £150. It is always better to fit a water-cooled system rather than a fan attached to the processor and at £80+ is an excellent investment. Having decided on your processor and case you then need to choose a gaming motherboard to match. This is the backbone of your system and, currently, an Intel CPU the Z370 Aorus Gaming 7 from Gigabyte at £250 is excellent value. or the MSI 970 gaming board. For an AMD CPU the ASRock X399, at £350 is stunning or, alternatively at £170 the MSI X470 is very good.

Next is the graphics card. You really want to buy the best you can afford; the choices are mainly between AMD and NVidia. NVIDIA have been dominating the market with their ‘10’ series of graphics card which includes the 1050TI, 1060, 1070 and 1080 (£200-£500). AMD cards include the RX 540X, RX 550/60X/70X/80X. I would suggest

the NVIDIA 1050TI at around £180-£200 or an even higher spec card if you can afford it.

Next is storage. You should install an SSD (solid state drive) for the operating system and then an HDD for the data. This configuration will allow you to have the blazing fast boot speeds of the SSD but also the high capacity of the HDD. Finally, you need to buy some RAM (random access memory) and a power supply. Usually RAM will cost approximately £10-£20 per Gb, and, yes, you can buy a power supply for £30-£40; but please spend a little more (say, £80-£100) for a high-performance supply which will guarantee you continuity of power without fluctuations, which can damage no end of parts in your tower.

It’s easy to spend £1000-2000 on a gaming computer and a cheaper alternative is to buy a second-hand tower with, say, an i5 processor and then upgrade it. Next month, I will write about the different software usually used on a laptop/tower.

s with all Fen towns in the 19th century March had a surprising number of businesses.

There were eleven academies, three attorneys, a brass foundry, three auctioneers, ten bakers, a banker, two basket makers, six blacksmiths, three booksellers and printers, eight shoemakers, four carpenters, one guilder, ten builders, eight butchers, four carpenters, three china dealers, three chemists, two clothes dealers, three coopers, five coal and corn merchants, seven fire agents, three fishmongers, ten seedsmen, two glovers, eight grocers, two hairdressers, two ironmongers, two lime burners, two maltsters, one mechanist, four millers, seven milliners, seven millwrights, three painters, two ropemakers, three saddlers, three surgeons, ten tailors and one tallow chandler.

March was well catered for and shops well used.

to purchase materials. A carriage did travel to Wisbech twice a week, but it was not heavily used as journeys were expensive. Butchers engaged a brisk trade and animals were slaughtered along West End. Fishmongers were particularly popular at March, most fish and especially eels were trapped at fisheries in the surrounding fens. Most shops were situated along Bridge Green (Broad Street) and High Street. See the difference in our times!

Fresh water supplies were obtainable at four sites. Each morning water was collected mainly by women carrying buckets yoked to shoulders.

Some houses and cottages had their own supplies of water and many were sited near cesspits. It is not surprising that in 1849-50 March was affected by serious diseases and 4000 inhabitants died, the record for a town of its size, the population numbering about 4000.
