Review: Hugh Lupton’s one man show ‘On Common Ground’ at the March Town Hall Arts Centre on Friday 31st January 2014.

I had recently discovered John Clare’s poem ‘I am’ while writing a school poetry resource. I was amazed how this poet captured exactly what it was like to suffer as my husband did when he showed the first signs of a disease that robbed him of his mind. I learned that John Clare, too, had lived near Peterborough and had ended his days in a lunatic asylum. Thus, when I saw Hugh Lupton was offering an evening of entertainment based on the life and work of John Clare, I had to go. I was expecting a quiet, ‘academic’ evening full of facts and poetry reading. The evening Hugh presented was much more enthralling than this! Hugh demonstrated that rare ability to tell a tale in a mesmerising way so that you cannot help but listen and be amazed. In our current bite-sized attentiondeficit world we rarely appreciate what Hugh showed us: it is much more interesting and effective if you can be drawn into the world of another, in our case, John Clare, by hearing tales that lead you on a long journey packed with colourful images, events and personalities. Before the event, I mentioned the poem ‘I am’ and Hugh immediately related it to me – he was thoroughly immersed in John Clare and his poetry. Without reference to a single piece of paper, this true story teller held us transfixed for hours. His prose was eloquent in its own right, slipping seamlessly between simple narration you would hear while sitting round the fire, poetic interludes that infused you with the rhythm and thoughts of a long journey and historical facts that put everything meaningfully in place, while the spirit of John Clare constantly appeared and reappeared providing the foundation of this wonderful event. This was indeed a rare, highly entertaining and intriguing experience that I would not have missed for the world! Fables, Tales and Folklore’ next presents Malcolm Busby telling the tale of Nancy the Waterman, a tale of sex, violence and cross-dressing in Victorian Cambridge, on Friday 25th April 2014 at 7.30 pm at March Museum, High St., March. Tickets from Johnson’s Hardware, Dartford Rd or email: bookings@ tellinghistory.co.uk
