arewell rain and hello sunshine … please! The last few weeks have been so busy with fun outdoors events. It’s so heart-warming when people do actually take up the opportunities offered by those wonderful, hard-working individuals and organised societies who volunteer so readily and with such success, year on year.

In Bourne, for instance, The Wellhead Park has already seen the enormously successful Bourne Festival at the end of May, followed by the D-Day celebrations on June 6th. The Picnic in the Park came next and was so well attended too. The good folk of the Deepings will hopefully turn out in force for your ‘Funday Sunday’ on July 7th, whilst the fabulous Deepings Raft Race will soon be upon us, on August 4th.

In whatever ways you choose to spend these summer days, I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday time.

Interesting news came from Germany recently as the football Euros get underway. Besides restricting the English fans by only selling them low-alcohol beer, one police chief recommended that the English fans smoke cannabis rather than getting lairy on the beer.

Whatever was wrong with a half-time cup of tea and a Pukka pie, I wonder?

This summer of sport just keeps on providing memories to last us all a lifetime. Add the Paris Olympics (July 26th to August 11th), to the Cricket T20 Men’s World Cup (final on June 29th); Wimbledon (July 1st – 14th) to the British Golf Open at Troon (July 14th – 21st), and we’ve even got England Men’s Rugby in New Zealand (July 6th and 13th). Then, of course, there’s the General Election – hardly a sport … unless you include shooting down former cabinet ministers!

And finally: ●

W hen my wife asked whether she should swap her trainer laces for Velcro, I replied, “Why knot?”

● When in France, I always say “beaucoup” – it means a lot to them.

Recipe

Roasted Chicken WITH MINTED BROAD BEANS & FETA CHEESE

Broad beans are in season now and so versatile! This simple recipe pairs them with family favourite roast chicken and salty feta cheese.

Method

Ingredients

4 skinless chicken breasts 2 tbsp olive oil Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 large sprig of fresh mint, plus handful small leaves 750g broad beans 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 200g feta cheese

1 Slash each breast in a couple of places, then place in a dish with the olive oil, half the lemon zest and juice, and the garlic.

Season well and leave to marinate for 10-15 minutes.

2 Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6.

Bring a pan of water to the boil, add the mint sprig and blanch the broad beans for 2-3 minutes until tender. Drain, discard the mint and refresh under cold water, then drain again. You can slip each broad bean from its outer shell, if you like. Whisk the rest of the lemon zest and juice with the extra-virgin olive oil, season and drizzle over the beans. Crumble in the feta and stir it through, along with the mint leaves. Set aside.

3 Heat a frying pan over a high heat and brown the chicken breasts until both sides are golden, then transfer to a roasting tin and roast for 5-10 minutes, or until cooked. Serve immediately, sliced in half, with the minted broad beans and feta.

aving been established by Ryan Clements and James North in Bourne, NC Foot Health has become one of the leading providers of foot care in the area. In the last year, diversification on a grand scale has taken place, with sports massage, reflexology and ear wax removal services being added to this thriving company’s offering.

The day-to-day operation and overseeing a team of seven professionals in their respective fields, is entirely in the capable hands of Ryan. Castor Lodge Care Home in Castor, Peterborough, recently held an innovative Virtual Reality (VR) session for their residents, thanks to a partnership with Recreo VR.

To make these experiences possible, Alex Lancaster from Recreo VR visited two significant historical sites near Peterborough: Burghley House in Stamford and Peterborough Cathedral. His visits enabled him to capture detailed VR footage, which was used to create a virtual tour tailored to the residents of Castor Lodge Care Home.

Residents also had the choice to visit Edinburgh Zoo, Spain, or a tour of beaches around the world. ‘Our goal is to facilitate a seamless integration of virtual reality into the daily practices of care facilities, ensuring a transformative and enriching experience for all involved,’ explained Alex Lancaster from Recreo VR. ow is the time to lift garlic and shallots as the foliage becomes yellow and strawy: hang bulbs out in the sun or in an airy shed. Onions also need drying well before they are stored: a few days before harvesting, loosen the soil around the roots, choose a dry day to lift the bulbs and lay them on the ground in the sun.

Do not be tempted to store them until they are thoroughly dry as they will probably rot.

Early potatoes can be lifted and eaten now while they are at their best. If you are not using the space for anything else, a green manure can be planted, such as mustard (a fast-growing crop), which will help prevent weed growth and can be dug in when fully grown to provide nutrients for the soil. With later potato crops, check the plants and earth-up, if necessary, to prevent the tubers going green from exposure to light. Poor potato crops are the result of poor nutrition; try feeding potatoes with a tomato feed.

Although it is getting late for sowing and planting, there are still a few crops that can be planted: • lettuce, rocket and a variety of salad leaves – succession sow for an ongoing supply in the autumn.

• Fast growing varieties of peas, beetroot and carrots – a good time to sow carrots to avoid the carrot fly.

• Florence fennel.

• Plant out your leeks. Just dib a hole about 150mm/6″ deep and drop the leek into the hole. Water it in and there’s no need to fill the holes with soil; enough will wash in with watering and rain.

• Plant out cabbage, cauliflowers, Brussels, broccoli and kale for autumn and winter cropping, using the space created by lifting onions, garlic and early potatoes.

Other jobs to do in the vegetable patch: • When climbing beans have reached the top of the canes, pinch out the growing tip.

• Strawberries will finish fruiting, so tidy up old foliage and cut off runners or use them to produce new plants.

• Earth up brassicas to give them a firm hold in the soil and give them a top-dressing of nitrogenous fertiliser or an organic liquid feed.

• Nip off the side shoots of your tomatoes; they appear in the “v” between leaf stems and main stems, and when there are four or five trusses, pinch out the growing tip of the plant to allow the fruit to ripen. Water them with a liquid feed as soon as the first fruits are formed. Likewise for peppers.

• Ensure that peas and brassicas are netted to keep off the pigeons.

• Plant potatoes ready for Christmas; garden centres usually stock the winter varieties.

• Use a liquid feed on most crops in moist soil.

This can be a proprietary feed from a garden centre or homemade from nettles or comfrey.

• Consider mulching around larger plants like squashes to help preserve water too. You can use well-rotted manure or your own garden compost.

Considerations for First-time Buyers

G

etting onto the property ladder has always been a challenge, but perhaps even more so at the moment. A report has found that it is currently the most expensive time to be a first-time buyer (FTB) in over seventy years

[Source: Building Societies Association].

Managing monthly payments Higher mortgage repayments are a particular barrier to homeowning. Between March 2022 and November 2023, the average mortgage rate for FTBs increased from 2.2% to 5.6% [Source: UK Finance]. To make monthly costs more affordable, people are often opting to take on longer mortgages, with a fifth of FTBs in 2023 choosing terms of thirty-five years or more. In the previous year, fewer than one in ten opted for mortgages of this length.

Larger deposits Since 2005, the average home deposit has increased by 160%, largely due to a steady increase in house prices and varying availability of high loan-to value (LTV) mortgages [Source: Building Societies Association]. Now, the average FTB in the UK can expect to put down £60,000 on their first home. However, this figure varies significantly depending on the region; it can be as high as £144,000 in London, or as low as £27,000 in North-East England.

Calling in help To get on the property ladder, most FTBs will either

need two incomes that are higher than average, or financial support from family or friends. In fact, 37% of FTBs in 2022-23 received a gift or loan from friends or family, compared with 27% the previous year [Source: English Housing Survey].

This means that those most likely to lose out on home ownership are either on a lower income, buying alone, or cannot receive help from family.

Older renters The challenges facing FTBs mean that hopeful homeowners are often forced to stay in the private rented sector for longer. Over the last two decades, the average age of an FTB has increased from thirty-two to thirty-six.

Calling for change The experiences of FTBs reflect the condition of the wider property market. The UK has not seen such a low level of outstanding mortgages since the end of the 1980s [Source: Building Societies Association], so serious consideration must be given to how to make homeowning more affordable. With the General Election imminent, the Building Society Association reflected that a new government “should commit to a package of housing policies that make homes more affordable, more available, and more appropriate to the needs of those living in them and the world we live in”.

Fledglings, Dragonflies and Butterflies: Summer’s Here!

I have not seen such a concentrated hatch of young birds for many years.

rom young house sparrows fluttering their wings demanding food from their parents to newly fledged starlings having to forage on their own for the first time, running quickly trying to catch flying insects.

The calls of starlings seem to ring out from every house roof. The groups of swifts flying around houses in the Deepings seem to be less numerous this year, but it is great to see them entering roof eaves to nest.

The diversity of bird species around the Deepings in June has been exceptional this year. The rarities include avocets, black winged stilts, and marsh harriers, all occurring within approximately five miles of the centre of Deeping! Not to be outdone, however, were otters with regular early morning sightings at Deeping Locks!

The insects have not disappointed either this summer with squadrons of male Banded Demoiselle damselflies by, what seems like, every body of water.

All four of their wings have a broad iridescent blue band creating a dazzling visual effect when they fly – an effect enhanced by their metallic bluegreen body. Although they have long thin bodies and a fluttering flight, they are dragonflies and are in the same group as the larger bodied and faster

flying Hawker and Darter dragonflies which will be present in growing numbers in the next few months.

Whilst we are used to seeing swifts, swallows and house martins around the town and villages, the browner sand martins tend to frequent the larger water bodies and lakes we have in our area. They excavate nest tunnels in sand and earth banks.

Watching a sand martin colony flying around their chosen nest site is one of the delights of the summer. Their numbers have fallen in recent years, but sand martin nesting tubes have been designed and they work well but, as with all nest boxes, their location has to be very well planned.

The highlight of the butterfly summer so far is the Brown Argus. This little butterfly can be seen flying low over grassland banks around Maxey. As the name suggests, it has chocolate brown upper wings with tiny red dots around the wing edges. This is a species of limestone grasslands.

It has two flight periods (MayJune and August-September) as opposed to the similar Northern Brown Argus butterfly that has just one (mid-June to mid-July).

Finally, those of you out for late, summer evening walks don’t forget to look out for green lights in the grass verges – these are glow-worms, and we need to know where they live as, nationally, they seem to be declining but locally we have several areas where there are large colonies just let me know on daviddenman04@aol.com.

Inheritance Tax

– HMRC Windfall Continues

A

ccording to recently released figures from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the amount of money received from Inheritance Tax (IHT) exceeded £7.5 billion for the first time, in the year to April 2024, and this figure is set to grow to over £9 billion by 2028.

The International Monetary Fund has even suggested that increasing Inheritance Tax by broadening its base could be a way to ease the government’s ‘difficult’ fiscal situation.

Now, I am not a politician. But the fact is that, by the time you read this, a new government will have been sworn in (or will be just about to be) following the General Election on July 4th.

I know that it is not long since I was writing about the rumours of Inheritance Tax being abolished by the Conservatives, but the fact is they simply couldn’t afford it, and the new government, whatever its political hue, is unlikely to be able to either.

Any new government will inherit the public finances in a poor state, with ever-growing demands on what is an already stretched budget. This means that a new government could take the IMF’s recommendation to heart and broaden the number of people who fall into the IHT net. The number of estates affected by IHT has grown by 250% since 2010 with 6.7% of estates now paying the tax.

What does this mean for us? As ever, the right planning will always pay dividends. Making sure that you use all the allowances available to you and your family, the judicious use of gifting whilst you are alive, and having tax-efficient wills in place all serve to make IHT a broadly voluntary tax.

tupendous attractions were promised at Deeping St James Horse Show and Gymkhana in August 1945. It took place in Manor Park, now the site of Deepings School, and competitions were held for the smartest horse-drawn farm wagon, as well as riding and fancy dress.

The event was organised to raise money for a “Welcome Home Fund” in support of local servicemen returning from World War II. Under the War Charities Act, communities could set up their own schemes, and the first Deeping Show “sprang to life suddenly” after only three weeks of planning. It was so successful that the committee decided to make it an annual fixture on the first Saturday in June. Horses and livestock were the main attraction, but gradually a wider variety of rural displays and trade stands were added. Dances were held in Market Deeping and Stamford Assembly Rooms to raise more money, with the aim of eventually financing a local teenager at agricultural college.

Building developments in Manor Park meant the Show had to find a new venue and so, in 1956 it moved into the Mill Field, Market Deeping, where Tattershall Drive now stands. The new setting had space for a larger marquee and more exhibits, with the firstever dog show and a ladies’ sheep shearing competition, attracting more than 7,000 visitors from a wide area.

the slippery conditions, but one highlight was the presence of “Old Robey”, a well-loved traction engine which had worked in the fields around Deeping from 1910 until its recent retirement.

With less people in the district involved in agriculture, and takings at the Show barely covering expenses, its future was in doubt, but the organizing committee who were all volunteers, soldiered on.

From 1973, the event was extended to a second day, with Sunday focussing on family entertainments.

Variable weather over the years provided more challenges, especially in 1983 which became known as the “Battle of the Muds”! Heavy storms left the showground waterlogged and holes had to be drilled in the field to allow vehicles and equipment on to the site. Most local shows were cancelled that month, but Deeping went ahead as usual.

It had gained the reputation of being one of the best small shows in the country, with generations enjoying its traditional farming atmosphere.

The end came in 2013, a year after the final East of England Show, but its contribution to the local scene will long be remembered.

In 1962, the Show moved a short distance into fields on the west side of Millfield Lane, which became its final home. Rain reduced attendance that year and contestants in a tug of war contest struggled in

Exciting Finish at the Deeping 10K and Fun Run

T

he annual Deeping 10K and Fun Run on May 19th saw an exhilarating day of competition and community spirit, as runners from across the region gathered to display their talents.

With perfect running conditions, the event was an enormous success, drawing participants and spectators alike.

The Men’s 10K race witnessed a thrilling finish, with Lee Mullen (Skegness & District R.C) emerging victorious in 33:45 minutes, ahead of Dylan Tomaselli (Hunts AC) and Brian Corleys (Bushfield).

The Ladies’ 10K race was equally captivating. Katie

Vargeson won in 41:23 minutes, followed by Paula Downing (Mablethorpe R.C.) and Claudia Nevett.

The Fun Run was a highlight for many, with Finley Smith taking the top spot with an impressive time of 10:47 minutes. The first female finisher was Courtney Harding in 14:18 minutes.

Race Director, Terry Murphy expressed his gratitude to all the volunteers, sponsors, and participants who made the day possible, commenting, “It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm and support from everyone involved. Congratulations to all our runners for their incredible performances.”

We are part of the national charity ‘Ramblers.Org’ which campaigns to protect the rights to walk in our beautiful countryside and provides a network of local groups which organise ‘led’ walks on a regular basis. Walking with the Ramblers gives you the confidence to walk safely with a well-established organisation that has championed the rights of walkers for nearly ninety years.

Our group offers weekend, and some weekday walks of between five and six, and eight and nine miles in the area described. Members receive a weekly email describing the forthcoming walks and sometimes we organise ‘away days’ so we can explore places 48

further afield, such as the Norfolk coast, Cambridge and the Lincolnshire Wolds. We regularly join up with the Rutland group and walk with them in the rolling hills of the Rutland, Leicestershire and the Northamptonshire countryside. You can join up to three walks, free of charge, before joining Ramblers so you can test the water first. If you do decide to join, the cost is just £3.42 per month.

For people who enjoy organising and taking responsibility for teams, we are looking for people who could step up to become ‘walk leaders’ for our group. Full training is offered for those wishing to take on ‘walk leader’ roles.

Impressive Medals Haul at Spalding Swimming Meet Deepings Swimming Club took a strong squad of thirty-one swimmers to the Tulip Meet in Spalding recently. Strong competition was provided by Peterborough, Lincoln, March, Skegness, Boston and Cambridge. It was an extremely successful weekend, as Deepings took home a total of twelve golds, eight silvers, and fourteen bronze medals, along with many county-qualifying times and personal bests!

Oliver Clarke dominated the Boys 11-years age group picking up a staggering six gold medals. He was closely followed by Noah Skinner with seven medals in total, (three gold, one silver and three bronze). Other medal successes included James Cash, Oliver Shepherd, Isacc Donaldson-Badger, and Sam Griffin.

In the Girls events, Lottie Jenkinson in the 13-years age group was the club’s top performer with two golds, two silvers and a bronze. Other medal winners were Evie Davies, Olivia King, Corey Farley, Isabella Reynolds, Lucy Jenkinson, and Annabel Shepherd.

DEEPINGS SWIMMING CLUB – GRANTHAM GRAND PRIX

Four Deepings SC swimmers brought home medals from the final round of the Grantham Grand Prix at the start of June. In the 11 Years Boys event, Oliver Clarke was second overall; in the 11 Years Girls event, Annabel Shepherd was fifth overall; and in the 9 ears Girls, Aoife Hickey was third and Annabelle Hatcher Brennan was sixth.

This competition sees junior swimmers (up to age twelve) compete over four weekends. It is highly competitive with the best junior swimmers from Grantham, Lincoln Vulcans and Lincoln Pentaqua providing stiff competition. It’s a great opportunity for some of the younger and less experienced swimmers to try competitive racing for the first time.

“Deeping Funday Sunday”- July 7th (12 noon – 5pm)

reparations are almost complete for the super “Funday Sunday”, where the John Eve Field in Market Deeping will be full of opportunities for all members of family to have a great afternoon, without having to spend a lot of money! There’s so much to look forward to, including: Main stage where music from local groups will be played throughout the afternoon.

■ Crafts and a craft tent and a huge raffle; top

prizes include a Tesco hamper and an electric garden trimmer, kindly donated by Branch Bros.

Food, bar, refreshments and ice creams will be available.

from local sports groups such as karate; crazy bingo; wacky races; and vouchers from local businesses and small gifts (ensuring that every child will go home with something).

With the demise of the Deeping’s Carnival after over fifty years of existence, it has been decided Deeping will have a ‘FUNDAY SUNDAY’!

Langtoft Primary School’s “Ground Force Day”

L

angtoft Primary School is a safe, fun and happy place to be. Our school has a variety of ways to expand children’s healthy minds, one of which being ‘OPAL’ (outdoor play and learning). This is a new feature to our school and one which improves children’s access to their right to play and rest (Article 31 UNCRC).

To support OPAL, we were lucky enough to welcome friends and family into school to share our ‘Ground Force Day’. On this day, we tidied the grounds and built playhouses and cars. Our school still has a few places available in some classes, so if you would like your child to enjoy learning and playtimes, please contact our office.

Market Deeping Community Primary School Children in Year 4 at Market Deeping Community Primary School enjoyed a fun packed two-day trip to Gulliver’s World, Sheffield. The forty-two children took part in a range of activities including climbing, team games, laser tag and a giant bouncy castle. They then spent the night in a soft-play area and the next 54

day at the theme park. All had a great time and a few even got some sleep!

Mr Ratchford, Headteacher, said, “It was a brilliant trip and a really good experience for the children to develop their independence and teamwork. It is amazing how little sleep they need!”
