Iwas fascinated to hear that the actress, Dame Joan Collins had recently turned ninety, thus becoming one of the very few women who have remained international celebrities for eight decades. She puts her longevity and success down to energy, exercise, optimism, work and “living for today”. I quite like her take on the ‘Carpe Diem’ idea: “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift; that’s why it’s called the present!”
Well, what a fabulous summer this looks like turning into, with long spells of warm and sunny weather ahead; I hope that hasn’t put the curse on the weeks to come, as heavy rain and storms never seem to be too far away in our wonderful country!
Whatever the weather, you’re always likely to ‘discover’ something to interest, inform and, hopefully, entertain you in your ‘favourite local magazine’!
We recently returned from an unusually hot and dry Lake District. Every year, I walk past the primary school in Coniston, whose ‘mission statement’ reads: “Work Hard, Aim High, Have Fun”. How fortunate that those lucky youngsters not only have the glorious Fells and Lake Coniston nearby, but also a management team who can, in so few words, provide such a wise message, one which could help us all live our lives!
Mungo Jerry’s 1970 hit, “In the Summertime”, includes the lines, “We’re always happy| Life’s for livin’ yeah, that’s our philosophy”. Yes, summer is here at last, holidays are on the horizon, and I hope that you’re all finding “livin’ easy” and agreeing that indeed, “life’s for livin’”.
And finally,
● When my wife asked if I’d seen our dog bowl, I told her I hadn’t realised that he could play cricket.
● Doesn’t it irritate you when people confuse “your” and “you’re”? There so stupid!
Enjoy the read.

The Annual Deepings Raft Race will be held on Sunday August 6th with this year’s theme being “Sporting Heroes”. It is hoped that potential entrants will exercise their amazing imagination once again to concoct rafts in all shapes and sizes to battle their way along the River Welland in Deeping St James and Market Deeping.
Several suggestions have already been made for possible raft team names, including ‘The Jamaican Bob Sleigh Raft’, ‘The 1966 England World Cup Winners Raft’, ‘The Mo’s Marathon Men Raft’, ‘The McLaren Formula One Raft’, or more topically, ‘The Lionesses Raft’. Of course, the raft could just be representing your local team, whether that be football, tennis, rugby, cricket, darts, snooker, spin or whatever – an ideal opportunity to promote your local club or team.
Although rafters and spectators alike are traditionally encouraged to embrace the theme and don fancy dress, race organisers emphasise it is by no means essential – plain rafts and sober clothing will be welcome too (but perhaps not so much fun!)
Aside from the river-based antics, this much-loved family fun day, which is free for spectators to attend, will also have a funfair and a variety of stalls stretching from Bridge Street in Deeping St James to the centre of Market Deeping. In addition to being a great day of fun, the Deepings Raft Race is a significant charity fundraising event. In addition to the Exotic Pet Refuge and the Carers Sitters Service, this year’s race will also be making donations to the Deepings Community Leisure Centre Project and the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.

THINK ONCE: When considering your aesthetics treatment, you should take the time to consider the experience of your practitioner. Here at Deep-in Aesthetics we have been established for over five years and have over sixty ‘five star’ reviews from our clients which can be accessed via Google and Yell.com.
THINK TWICE: Any prospective aesthetics client should take the time to consider what could happen if all did not go to plan. During our years of trading, we have never had an adverse event and Alistair is fully medically qualified to deal with these events should they ever occur. Think about whether you want to be in the hands of a pharmacist with over twenty-five years’ experience and a master’s degree in prescribing as well as the obvious qualifications in aesthetics, or a beauty technician who has done an afternoon course to enable her to add a sale alongside gel nails?
THINK SAFETY: Our client base value our expertise and care, and you can never underestimate just how important it is that people have trust in you and peace of mind that it’s going to be carried out safely. You only have to read our reviews to know that it is something we deliver, time and time again. Safety is key to us.
Now, as we have gone through the sensible part, allow us to share some good news with you …. we got married in May this year and we would like to celebrate our happiness with you and offer all our clients, old and new, the chance to receive 10% off any treatment booked in July this year.
We want to thank everyone for trusting in us and supporting us so that we were able to make this our
full-time profession. We love helping both the men and women that come to us feel better, whether that be emotionally or physically, as we also offer medical treatments alongside the usual aesthetic ones. We look forward to seeing you soon…….

What an amazing couple and service they offer. have never met two people who are so professional and personally relatable at the same time. They both made me feel so at ease and who just genuinely wanted me to reach my goal. They have given me the confidence to actually be able to look in the mirror and be okay with what I look like for the first time in about 7 years. Thank you so much! Highly recommend and will be using their services again."
Such a lovely, knowledgeable, welcoming couple. It's lovely to have their services available so locally and they offer such a wide variety of treatments. I highly recommend them"

If you’re about to travel outside of the UK, you may need to be vaccinated before you set off for your trip. The childhood vaccination programme in the UK protects you from a number of diseases, but you may need extra vaccinations or antimalarials if you’re planning on visiting certain parts of the world.
Getting vaccinated can help prevent you from getting ill if you’re exposed to diseases which we don’t normally have in the UK. We can help you understand how to keep your risks low while abroad and help you work out which vaccinations and antimalarials you may want to consider depending on things like:
• Which regions you’ll be visiting
• What activities you’ll be doing
• Your age and general health
Some travel vaccinations may be needed several weeks before departure. Ideally you should see us six to eight weeks before travelling, but we may still be able to help if you’re leaving sooner, even days before for travel.

From young house sparrows fluttering their wings demanding food from their parents to newly fledged starlings having to forage on their own for the first time, running quickly trying to catch flying insects. The calls of starlings seem to ring out from every house roof. The groups of swifts flying around houses in the Deepings seem to be less numerous this year, but it is great to see them entering roof eaves to nest.
The diversity of bird species around the Deepings in June has been exceptional this year. The rarities include avocets, black winged stilts, and marsh harriers, all occurring within approximately five miles of the centre of Deeping! Not to be outdone, however, were otters with regular early morning sightings at Deeping Locks!
The insects have not disappointed either this summer with squadrons of male Banded Demoiselle damselflies by, what seems like, every body of water. All four of their wings have a broad iridescent blue band creating a dazzling visual effect when they fly – an effect enhanced by their metallic bluegreen body. Although they have long thin bodies and a fluttering flight, they are dragonflies and are in the same group as the larger bodied and faster
flying Hawker and Darter dragonflies which will be present in growing numbers in the next few months. Whilst we are used to seeing swifts, swallows and house martins around the town and villages, the browner sand martins tend to frequent the larger water bodies and lakes we have in our area. They excavate nest tunnels in sand and earth banks. Watching a sand martin colony flying around their chosen nest site is one of the delights of the summer. Their numbers have fallen in recent years, but sand martin nesting tubes have been designed and they work well but, as with all nest boxes, their location has to be very well planned.
The highlight of the butterfly summer so far is the Brown Argus. This little butterfly can be seen flying low over grassland banks around Maxey. As the name suggests, it has chocolate brown upper wings with tiny red dots around the wing edges. This is a species of limestone grasslands. It has two flight periods (MayJune and August-September) as opposed to the similar Northern Brown Argus butterfly that has just one (mid-June to mid-July).
Finally, those of you out for late, summer evening walks don’t forget to look out for green lights in the grass verges – these are glow-worms, and we need to know where they live as, nationally, they seem to be declining but locally we have several areas where there are large coloniesjust let me know on daviddenman04@aol.com
I have not seen such a concentrated hatch of young birds for many years.
The Grand Procession came into the Market Place headed by elephants and camels, then a magnificent carriage in which a brass band was playing, followed by fifteen wagons containing wild animals, drawn by fifty powerful horses. It was March 1859 when Wombwell’s travelling menagerie made its dramatic entrance to Deeping. On that occasion, they brought lions and tigers, monkeys, a zebra, exotic birds and even a boa constrictor to exhibit to villagers.
George Wombwell started acquiring wild animals in 1805 and displaying them to the public. As his travelling shows expanded, he added lion tamers and performing elephants to attract the crowds. A visit to Wombwell’s was billed as instructive, educational, and entertaining for young and old. After George died, his descendants continued to take menageries around the country for many years, and by the time they visited Deeping in 1913, their motto had become “The days they come, the days they go, but still remains the old Grand Show”.
Their animal wagons formed an oblong enclosure, almost filling the Market Place, and local businessman, George Hildyard paid for all the school children of Market Deeping and Deeping St James to attend an educational event at the show. One boy who was present in 1913 recalled that it was a wonderful sight … and the elephants were very, very friendly. They were paraded through the streets, and residents fed them pieces of bread.
In between visits from the menagerie, annual fairs brought excitement for local children, especially one flamboyant character who called himself the Rock King. Sweet-maker, James Lewin was born in Peakirk and was a familiar figure at fairs in the area for fifty years, with his waxed moustache and broad-brimmed hat. He often wore check trousers with leggings, a striped waistcoat, plaid tie, and a pink carnation. His sales technique was to call a boy forward and fill his mouth with rock until a crowd had gathered. He then asked people how much they would pay for each bag of sweets, and his takings were thrown into a large bucket. He estimated that he gave away half a ton of rock a week.
By the 1930s, the educational role of travelling menageries had been overtaken by regional zoos, while circuses with just a few trained animals could provide cheaper entertainment. In October 1930, a circus procession left Deeping for Bourne, and as it passed through Towngate, one farm horse was so spooked by the sight of elephants that it died of fright. Wombwell’s menagerie was disbanded in 1932 and its remaining wild beasts were re-homed in Whipsnade Zoo, where their sociability with humans made them very popular.

Improving your credit score can be a crucial first step when applying for a mortgage. Lenders use your credit score to assess your creditworthiness and determine the interest rate and terms of your mortgage. Here are several steps you can take to improve your credit score:
5
Establish a positive credit history: If you’re a first-time buyer and not looking to buy in the next six months, consider opening a credit card. Making timely payments and using credit responsibly will help build a positive credit history.
1
Check your credit reports: Start by obtaining a copy of your credit reports from the major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion). Review them carefully to ensure they are accurate and up to date. If you find any errors or discrepancies, dispute them and have them corrected.
6
Be patient and consistent: Improving your credit score takes time. Consistently following good credit habits over an extended period will yield positive results. Avoid quick-fix schemes or companies claiming to boost your credit score overnight.
2
Pay bills on time: Payment history is a significant factor in determining your credit score. Make sure to pay all your bills, including credit cards, loans, and utilities, on time. Consider setting up automatic payments or reminders to avoid late or missed payments.
3Reduce credit card balances: High credit card balances can negatively impact your credit score. Aim to keep your credit card usage below 30% of the credit limit.
Remember that credit score requirements vary for each lender so you could be declined by some lenders and accepted by others. It’s always a good idea to consult with a mortgage professional who can guide you, based on your specific situation and provide tailored advice, avoiding damaging your credit score with applications that are likely to decline.
4
Avoid new credit applications: When you apply for new credit, such as credit cards or loans, it can temporarily lower your credit score due to the footprint left on your file. Try to minimize new credit applications six months prior to applying for a mortgage.

As the temperature rises during the summer months, it’s important to keep your home cool and comfortable without breaking the bank. Here are some tips for keeping your home cool and energy-efficient this summer:
Relegate Your Halogen Lights:
Not only are halogen lights heavy users of electricity, but they are a fire risk. This is because they get very hot, wasting energy, and pose a bigger fire risk than any other type of lightbulb.
Use Your Ceiling Fans:
Ceiling fans can help circulate cool air throughout your home, reducing your reliance on your air conditioning system. Make sure your ceiling fans are set to rotate anticlockwise during the summer months, as this will create a cooling breeze.
Keep Your Curtains and Blinds Closed:
Closing your curtains and blinds during the hottest parts of the day can help block out the sun’s rays and keep your home cooler. Consider installing blackout curtains or shades to keep your home even cooler.
Use Energy-Efficient Cooling Systems:
If you’re in the market for a new air conditioning system, consider investing in an energy-efficient model. These systems use less energy than traditional air conditioners, which can save you money on your energy bills.
Ventilation and Air Conditioning) technician at least once a year.
Use Your Appliances Wisely:
Appliances such as your oven, dishwasher, and clothes dryer can generate a lot of heat, which can make your home feel warmer. Use these appliances during the cooler parts of the day or consider using them less frequently during the summer months.
In conclusion, keeping your home cool and energyefficient during the summer months doesn’t have to be difficult. By using your ceiling fans, keeping your curtains and blinds closed, using energy-efficient cooling systems, maintaining your air conditioning system, and using your appliances wisely, you can stay cool and comfortable while saving money on your energy bills.
Maintain Your Air Conditioning System: Regular maintenance of your air conditioning system can help keep it running efficiently and effectively. Change your air filters regularly, and have your system inspected by a professional HVAC (Heating, 01778

The long summer holidays are almost here, and many of us will be taking a well-earned break; either some down-time with our other half or a family adventure with the children. However, the chances are (and these chances soar if you have teenagers!) that your mobile phone or tablets will be catching that flight or ferry with you. You may be needing to catch up on work emails or simply want to flood your social media channels with photos of your getaway. But how do you look after those devices like laptops and PCs that will most likely be staying at home? Home insurance and/or travel insurance will cover most cases of theft or accidental damage (be sure to check your policy) but here are a few simple steps to make sure your devices are safe:
• Backup your devices: It’s so simple and it should be something you do regularly but it’s easy to forget. Don't just back up to the cloud; consider having a backup to a separate hard drive too.
• Update your software: Again, a simple task that’s easily forgotten but can make a huge difference if anything goes wrong. Making sure you have up-to-date security software is paramount!
• Secure your devices: Use a PIN, pattern lock or two factor authentication. Don’t forget to add security authentication to your laptops and PCs and please think carefully about any passwords you are using.
• Be wary of which Wi-Fi you connect to: Think carefully before connecting to unsecured public Wi-Fi as there’s a huge risk that your devices could be hacked, sensitive data stolen or get infected with malware.
• Be careful what you share on social media: You might think you’re just making your friends envious with your beach photos but if you make it public that you are away from home, any thieves will be able to take advantage of your absence. Check who sees your posts and consider making it private to ‘friends only’, so you know only those you trust can see where you are.

There is a huge amount of chat in my profession at the moment about predatory marriage and how a quirk of the law can lead people to lose their inheritance. In fact, the Law Society is currently pushing for a change in the law to prevent this from happening.
Typically, it happens when an elderly, wealthy man (I’m afraid men are anecdotally more vulnerable!) is targeted by a younger woman who befriends him and then enters a relationship that ultimately leads to a marriage. It does happen to women as well.
I am sure we have all seen it; a couple who really don’t seem to fit … one old, one young, one wealthy, one not so much. Now, I am a huge believer in love and most of these relationships are probably a true love match, but not all of them will be.
At this point, you are probably thinking, ‘That’s interesting, but I don’t see the problem’. But there is one and it can be a pretty big one! The marriage to
Advice From NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legalthe new partner will revoke any will that the people getting married may have already put in place. This means that any planning that has been done in the past is invalidated and will lead to the predatory spouse inheriting the majority, if not all, of their victim’s estate. It will lead to the victim’s children and chosen beneficiaries losing out, and will often lead to expensive court cases, as the family try to reclaim what should have been theirs. We have seen in my previous articles just how difficult that can be.
Now, the good news is that most of the problems can be avoided. We can’t stop old men’s heads being turned by younger women. But, with good planning, we can ensure that the family’s wealth is protected for the family line and that the “Wicked Stepmother” never gets her claws in too deep! The only way to do this is to plan well in advance, so the best time to do this is now, if you are worried about an elderly parent, or about what might happen to your wealth in the future.

Why do I need a will?
Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate.
If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.
What are they?
Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.
These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.
What is it?
When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.
We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Some lucky children visited local business KFE to find out about sustainability in the oceans and gain insight into the fish and chip industry. The pupils had a fish and chips feast made by KFE, who supply equipment for fish and chip shops all over the country, including Harrods and Harry Ramsden’s. They also train staff to ensure they are providing the best quality fish and chips.
Tanya Henderson, Sales and Marketing Manager at KFE, said: “It was great to share our enthusiasm for cooking and preparing the best fish and chips. They were incredibly engaged, whether it was learning where the fish we eat comes from, making fishcakes, or naming their very own fish and chip shop.”
After a very busy spring, the Year Six children have been to visit Gulliver’s Land to explore and spend some well-earned time together during their final year at Langtoft.
As part of the Ancient Egyptian topic, the Year Three children have been exploring hieroglyphics whilst in their weekly ‘Forest School’ session. After exploring how sounds and words were made, they then investigated how to recreate words using the natural materials available to them.
Year 5 have just completed their “Bikeability” and were blessed with perfect conditions to develop and hone their cycle skills.
We currently have spaces in EYFS, Year 1 and Year 4. (Next year’s Year 1, Year 2 and Year 5). Please contact us to look round our fabulous school!
During the visit, Mark Petrou and Gordon Hillan, who are awarding-winning friers and fish and chip shop owners themselves, demonstrated how to make the finest food with a few simple ingredients. The children were very grateful for the experience and went home full of new knowledge and full of delicious fish and chips!
