Summer is still hanging around, but only just, and I hope your break has proved refreshing and energising. September signals the return to school for many and the shortening of days for all. Blackberries and sloes are ripening and some shops are already stocking their “musthaves” for Christmas, over three months away!

For us mums (and dads) with our teenagers now having received their GCSE and A-Level results, we can step back and see just what fantastic human beings they actually are, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. They have done their very best, taken the advice offered by their teachers and us, formulated future plans, and are developing into responsible adults. Phew!

As the fabulous summer of 2019 draws towards a close, we’re already looking forward to the months to come. Sports fans will have just enough time to recover from the Ashes before the Rugby World Cup kicks off in Japan on September 20th, (England’s first game is on the 22nd.) By then, Peterborough United will have (hopefully!) overcome their excessive generosity in gifting goals to their opponents!

This month traditionally provides us with a rash of one-liners from the Edinburgh Fringe, so I’ll leave you with: A cowboy asked me if I could help him round up 18 cows. I said, ‘Yes, of course, that’s 20 cows’, (Jake Lambert).

I got asked the other day if I liked the music of Ariana Grande, which surprised me as I thought that was a type of coffee, (Joey Page).

If you like hearing more personal stories, then join us at Biggin Hill Memorial Museum on September 11th, to learn about the lives and times of the aircrew who were based here in World War Two. The squadrons here were the first to destroy one thousand enemy aircraft and, to celebrate, a huge party was held, with three large lobsters on the top table labelled Hitler, Mussolini and Goebbels!

After the war, on the site of a former airfield and farm, an ex-farmer was given just two months to turn a rather chaotic location into the race track that we now know as Silverstone. The first race took place in 1948 with hay bales protecting the piggery and crops, in the centre of the track - and the home of British motorsport was born! CHIMICHURRI 2 table spoons red wine vinegar

Chimichurri can be added to your meat to serve, as a marinade or baste your meats like the chefs do at Toft.

3-4 cloves garlic, finely chopped or minced, 2 small red chillies, deseeded and finely chopped ¾ teaspoon dried oregano 1 level teaspoon coarse salt ½ teaspoon pepper

Paul and Pat Linford have been cooking up their award-winning fish and chips since 1989, all the while prioritising quality of ingredients and service, above all else. Favourites such as cod, haddock and plaice, together with rock salmon, (or huss), are cooked to your liking: in a crisp batter, lightly dusted in flour or steamed.

As well as serving up all the usual staples, the restaurant offers home-made extras such as Linford’s lip-smackingly satisfying coleslaw.

Diners can also enjoy the all-day special for under £10: a meal served with peas and bread, complete with a tea, coffee or soft drink. And when you’re done, why not try one of their indulgent desserts, from jam sponge to sticky toffee pudding?

One of the most appealing aspects of the restaurant is its courtyard, which offers the tantalising prospect of al fresco dining on a fine summer’s day or evening. The stone-walled courtyard, complete with potted

plants and shade sail for the hottest days, is ideal for both lunches and suppers – and there’s nothing quite like eating outside, in the fresh air, in the company of good friends or family.

Gluten-free Mondays Linfords also runs its hugely popular, gluten-free Mondays, when glutenfree batter is available alongside the traditional batter. Completely separate utensils and a fresh change of oil ensure there’s no chance of crosscontamination, and there’s even gluten-free vinegar to splash on your chips!

The health conscious among us can opt for steamed or lightly floured fish, served up with salad in place of chips for a deliciously low-fat meal. Dusting the fish in flour rather than dipping it in batter gives a coating just thin enough so the fish can be fried, ensuring exceptional succulence without the added calories.

Buying sustainably sourced fish can be something of a minefield these days – we all want to do the right thing, but getting it right can be difficult. Linfords has this sussed too, with all of their fish traceable from just two fishing vessels that harvest the seas, with the long-term survival of fish stocks in mind. Smaller fish – the next generation – can escape the nets, so that only larger fish remain.

These are then filleted and cut to size on site.

School News William Hildyard C of E Primary and Nursery School A stained glass cross that was designed as part of a Computing lesson during an Ofsted inspection has been unveiled at William Hildyard C of E Primary and Nursery School, Market Deeping.

Children from all year groups at the school designed a cross as part of their Easter studies, and the children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 used a drawing program to make their designs. The lessons were observed by Ofsted, who were pleased to see that the task covered RE, Art and Computing learning objectives. The children were invited to submit their designs so that one could be chosen to be made out of stained glass by one of the teachers at the school.

Before being officially hung, the cross was dedicated during a school worship by Rev. Kate Brown from St. Guthlac’s Church. The school would like to thank Claire Hart, a stained glass artist based in Thurlby, who kindly provided all the materials and some much-needed support to Mrs Chamberlain while the cross was being made.

One hundred and sixty designs were submitted and with so many varied designs it was very difficult to choose a single winner. Eventually, two complementary designs were chosen, by Rhyan Fox in Year 6 and Olivia O’Flaherty-Bland in Year 5. The two collaborated to come up with a final design.

Local residents board Slimming World’s Golden Bus! Excited residents from Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire turned out in force on Saturday 17th August when Slimming World’s 50th Birthday Golden Bus paid a visit to Peterborough’s Cathedral Square.

As part of the events, guests were invited to watch live cookery demonstrations and sample some of Slimming World’s famous recipes. Onboard chefs served healthy dishes cooked from scratch including Sunshine Salad, Easy Chicken Curry, Spaghetti Bolognese, and Vegetable Paella in their specially created kitchen. Anyone who stopped by, could also pick up a goody bag and a selection of recipe cards so they could try out the dishes for themselves at home.

Also on board the bus were some of the inspirational local slimmers whose lives have changed since joining Slimming World and losing weight.

The golden double decker, which is touring the UK and Ireland to celebrate and share Slimming World’s 50th anniversary year, is set to visit 59 towns and cities between July and September – and members of the public stepped aboard most recently to enjoy everything it had to offer.

Bethany Takes on Country’s Best at British Championships Bethany Eagle-Brown competed for the first time at the 2019 British Swimming Summer Championships in July after qualifying for two events, the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly. The sixteen-year-old was Deepings Swimming Club’s sole representative at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow, racing against the nation’s best age-group swimmers.

In the 100m freestyle Bethany set a blistering pace down the first 50m, turning in 28.82, threetenths of a second faster than the time she set in her 100m club record and just outside her 50m personal best. She tired slightly in the second 50m, suffering the

NEW ROTARY PRESIDENT AT THE DEEPINGS CLUB Our recent handover at Tallington Lakes saw Amrit Mistry receive the chain of office from outgoing president, Jenny Spratt, to become the new Rotary President of the Deepings (2019 – 2020).

Among a room full of Rotary members, guests and friends, Amrit was thrilled to become president, and promised to continue to guide the club along the successful way it has gone in recent years. His enthusiasm will encourage great support from members for the forthcoming busy programme.

In the 100m butterfly, a strong dive off the blocks saw her quickly into her stroke and within touching distance of the frontrunners after 50m. She finished just outside her personal best in 1:05.69 to come a respectable 16th in her age group, narrowly missing a place in the final.

Bethany Eagle-Brown, who raced in the 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly at the British Summer Championships. effects of a recent illness which hampered her preparation, and touched home in 59.93 seconds to finish 18th in the 16 years age group.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, was delighted with both races, commenting, “This was Bethany’s first experience of the British Champs but she wasn’t overawed by the step-up in class. She worked hard in both her events to finish inside the top twenty in her age group. I hope this experience will now spur her on to even greater things.”

Rotary Sponsors Adventure Break Kayaking, archery and speeding down a zip wire were among the activities enjoyed by students from Willoughby School in Bourne, when they went on an adventure break recently. Eight students from the school were able to visit the PGL Adventure Centre in Caythorpe, thanks to the support of two Rotary clubs.

The Rotary Club of the Deepings and the Rotary Club of Bourne teamed up to donate £1,000 £500 from each club - towards the cost of a three-day trip to the PGL Centre.

Deepings’ Success at Chesterfield Summer Splash A strong Deepings Swimming Club team travelled to Matlock in July to compete at the “Chesterfield Summer Splash” and won forty-four medals over the two days, with ten gold, fourteen silver and twenty bronze medals.

Collecting the biggest haul was fourteen-year-old Harry Cardell with eight medals. He struck gold in the 50m backstroke and 200m butterfly, added a hat-trick of silvers in the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle and completed the medal-set with bronze in the 50m and 100m butterfly, and 50m freestyle.

Alex Sadler won three golds, two silvers and a bronze in the 12 years age group, despite only competing on the Saturday.

(On Sunday, Alex joined his teammate Lilly Tappern on the East Midlands Talent Pathway in Nottingham, part of the Swim England Pathway, selected as one of the top swimmers in the region.)

Alex’s medal haul of six was equalled by Christian Rollinson in the 14 years category. Elevenyear-old Jacob Briers completed the gold-medal performances

with two, alongside a silver and a bronze.

Competing in only his second open meet away from his home pool in Deepings was nine-year-old Aaron Sadler, who won three bronze medals, all with new personal bests.

Concluding the boys’ medal tally was Bailey Jackson-Chilvers with a bronze in the 14 years age group.

While the boys dominated the gold medals, the girls’ team also enjoyed an excellent weekend, winning sixteen medals. Eight were shared by Grace Edwards and Holly Leggott, competing at opposite ends of the age categories.

Grace, in the 10 years age group, won two silvers and two bronzes whilst Holly managed the same in the 15 years/over category.

The medals kept flowing in the top age group, with Hannah Matthews achieving two silvers in the 100m and 400m freestyle and Emma Wilde winning a bronze.

The Deepings squad won 44 medals, including 10 golds, at the Chesterfield Summer Splash.

Holly Roffe and Molly Briers added the final five bronze medals.

Lynn Chapman, Deepings Swimming Club Head Coach, said, “This open meet was a great way for these swimmers to end their season on a high. There was some excellent racing and well-deserved personal bests achieved throughout the team.”

Over the same weekend, Deepings Swimming Club hosted round four of the Junior Fenland League. The young development squad put in its best performance of the campaign so far, to finish second of the five teams. First place finishes were achieved by Freya Chiva, Anthony Hall, Ryan Weise and Ella Gerrard.

Rotary Supports Student’s Trip to India A Deepings School A-level student is bound for India in September to spend a year working at a school for children with visual impairment.

Lillian Read, from Spalding, has been selected by the Project Trust charity to be a volunteer at the Devnar School for the Blind in Hyderabad, (the capital of the Indian state of Telangana, with a population of nearly seven million people).

The Rotary Club of the Deepings was pleased to sponsor Lillian with s e ptem b er 2019

a contribution of £150 towards her costs.

Lillian said, “I am very excited to be going to India. The Devnar School for the Blind is the only school in India for blind and partially sighted children. I am so lucky to be setting out on such an amazing adventure.”

“I’m Getting Married……” explains our reviewer, Jean White, who paid a visit to Flawless Body Friday August 2nd, 2019 will be a date I will never forget. I got engaged and we have decided to have a festive wedding on Friday December 27th. I’m really excited, but somewhat less so than my mother. She has been a long-standing client of Neeta’s at Flawless Body and I know how she has grown in confidence with the way she looks. Before I even knew it, we were booked in to see her on Scotgate in Stamford!

My mum has always raved about the clinic, but I had never been. I now had a purpose. I work hard, do long hours, don’t particularly look after my skin and, as I spend most of my time travelling in the

car and snacking on crisps and chocolates, I have put a few pounds on.

Neeta was exactly as my mother had described - cool, calm and very knowledgeable. She knows her stuff. She listened to me and focused on how I wanted to feel on my big day, as opposed to how I wanted to look.

I told her: I want to glow – I have never liked my complexion; when I’m hot or stressed, it goes red and blotchy.

I want to drop a dress size– to where I was a year ago.

I want to stop shaving – I want to be silky smooth for our honeymoon next Easter.

We started with my face. I put my head in front of the facial scanner and Neeta showed me the images on her iPad, explaining the reasons why my skin looked the way it did and what we could do to make me ‘glow like a princess’.

The last thing on my list was Laser Hair Removal. Neeta did my patch test, which thankfully wasn’t at all painful. I took out a package that combined a number of areas and, cost-wise, it worked out much less than I was expecting it to be. Neeta pointed out that September was the perfect month to start laser hair removal.

All in all, I walked out with no worries about my wedding day.

Rotary Recognition as the Empire Wheels Keep Turning As I write this, it is the morning of a sponsored challenge I decided to do for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice with a few friends. As someone who takes high-intensity, high-octane and notoriously tough circuit classes several times a week in the gym, I am occasionally heckled by our beloved members as they tell me I should be doing it with them! fact that if we raise the £1,000 we are looking for, it will take Empire over the £20,000 mark for funds raised for Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in just two years.

Oh, how I wish I could, but keeping such a lively and unruly bunch in order and ensuring they do things to time and in the correct manner and form, means I am busy being the instructor and motivational cheer leader. But, I thought, why don’t I answer their calls and do something that will be perceived to be slightly mad, extremely challenging, and a demonstration of what is possible when the mind is applied to it, for a cause with which we have a special affiliation?

I will of course keep you posted here!

The challenge, during the day and as soon as it can be completed, is: • 1000 burpees.

• 100 repetitions of a 100 kilo deadlift.

• A 1000 metre row on the rowing machine.

• A 1000 metre ski on our new SkiErg machine.

It will take hours (and will be a feat only made more challenging by the three or four hours’ sleep that our eleven-month-old teething little boy has allowed – I wouldn’t change it for the world). But me and the crew of four others who have agreed to replicate the task alongside me, will be driven by the

It was an honour to receive a Service Recognition Award for Outstanding Community Work.

woman while being what I can only describe as a force of nature at home as a mum. We manage to rotate our work patterns to be with Ethan while regularly leaning on the best grandparents Ethan could ask for on both sides. Nan and Grandma have been incredible!!

I also want to thank Tasha’s customers. Hairdressing it seems to me is an industry much like the fitness industry in that relationships

and loyalties are forged over time. But Tasha’s customers have flooded back after her time away and it really does mean more to her and us as a family than you could imagine. We have also been helped a massive amount by Tasha’s business partner and friend Helen.

Sacro-iliac Joint problems

by Philip Hakim, Registered Osteopath, Owner of the Wellhead Practice

F

ound at the lower end of the spine, the Sacroiliac joints (SIJ) connect the sacrum (a triangular shaped bone at the base of the spine) to each of the larger outer pelvic bones (ilia) to make the pelvis complete. They act as shock absorbers allowing movement and body weight to be transferred in a smooth and controlled manner from the upper body through to the legs and vice versa.

Possible causes of injury: SIJ injuries are not unusual. The more traumatic causes can include a fall onto your side such as a miss-timed sliding tackle, or slipping and landing onto your bottom.

Less dramatic reasons include repetitive weight bearing activities such as running, jumping, dancing or gymnastics for example. In practice, a common cause is a sudden jolt to the pelvis such as missing a step or dropping into an unseen hole in the ground whilst walking the dog. A rounded or slouching posture can also be a triggering factor.

Symptoms: Pain is usually felt on one side of the lower back often localised to the dimpled area just below your waistband.

You may feel discomfort in the buttock, lower abdomen or groin regions too. Some patients report a sense that the affected leg feels a slightly different length or that

it even drags or doesn’t swing properly when they walk.

Occasionally the front of the thigh feels achy or appears to burn if they have been on their feet too long. Rest can be a relief although you can end up feeling slightly stiff afterwards and turning over in bed can be painful too.

Treatment options: In my experience, most SI problems respond really well to manual treatment. Using techniques to decompress or re-align the joints and straighten the pelvis can work really well to restore normal joint movement. Soft tissue massage and stretching can then reduce the localised muscle spasm and encourage a healthier blood flow to the tissues. This helps to drain away any inflammation built up and speed up the recovery. Muscle re-education can then strengthen the surrounding areas or correct any postural imbalances that may be contributing and reduce the likelihood of a reoccurrence. Sometimes a special pelvic belt or sports taping is useful to stabilise the joint for a while.

Autumn on the Way - Coping with Seasonal Changes

Unbelievably, we’re heading into autumn already with nights drawing in. For some, including me, seasonal changes can affect people. Seasonal affective disorder, an increase in anxiety during the winter months, and fatigue are just some of the ways in which seasonal changes can affect our mental health.

Are you ready to get on top of it this year?

Additional supplemental support from Vitamin D, regular multi-vitamin and Vitamin B have all been supportive for my own mental and physical health when struggling with these symptoms, as well as increasing my magnesium intake. But a positive mindset can also help.

Anxiety and worry in its physical and mental forms can be debilitating and, to deal with it, we try and form coping mechanisms, tools that help. Nutritional support, exercise and therapy can make a great balance to support a positive mindset, but we need to remember that routine is the key.

It will also create a new neurological pathway in the brain, therefore making it easier over time. Focussing on positive achievements daily, moving more and getting exercise, as well as eating a healthy balanced diet over

time, will always benefit both the body and mind. Routine and consistency will always spark results.

A Chance Encounter at Deeping Lakes

D

eeping Lakes Nature Reserve is definitely at the top of my favourites list for places to encounter all sorts of wildlife. On this particular afternoon, as soon as I entered the top of the reserve in the wooded area, I was greeted with distant calls of a green woodpecker and blue tits, flitting in amongst the branches around me. I reached a small hill along the

path, and directly in front of me was a muntjac deer. I slowly crouched down and got behind some cover to avoid spooking the animal.

Luckily, it carried on eating soundly without so much of a hint of worry.

It crossed the path slowly, and the midday sun highlighted the animal perfectly.

As soon as it realised it was getting closer to where I was, it turned and headed towards a thorn bush on the other side of the path. At this point, I thought that would be the last sighting of it. Surprisingly, it reappeared from the bush in clear view and carried on searching for food, which allowed me to get even more images. Eventually, when I left it to continue feeding on its own, I then came across another muntjac;

a male with a war wound on its left ear. It was a wonderful experience to get so close to these charming mammals.

I have had a few encounters like this with the muntjacs at the reserve already this year, and I’m sure other visitors have had similar experiences as well.

Another encounter with a smaller muntjac resulted in one of my favourite images of the year so far, where it was a golden hour sunset and the petite mammal was captured beautifully before it soon disappeared into the thicker parts of the woods.

Are You Thinking of Releasing Funds From Your Property?

If you are over the age of 55, you may qualify for equity release which is a scheme that allows you to access cash tied up in your home. The money can usually be taken in a lump sum or drawn down in several smaller payments.

There are two types of equity release: Lifetime mortgage: This scheme allows you to borrow a proportion of the monetary value of your home and you will be charged interest on the amount borrowed.

The interest is generally ‘rolled up’ into the debt attributed to the property, meaning you don’t usually have to pay anything back until you pass away or decide to move on.

Home reversion: This scheme allows you to sell a share

of your property to a provider for less than its market value. The provider’s share will be returned to them when the property is sold after you move into a home or pass away.

If you have a mortgage on your property, equity release can allow you to pay the outstanding debt or reduce your monthly payments. This means you have the option to access a lump sum, regular withdrawals or simply rely on the release to help with household expenses.

Most policies have a ‘no negativeequity’ clause which means you will never owe more than your home’s value. However, you should keep in mind that equity release schemes are a lifelong commitment and will limit your options if you change your mind, if you need to move home, or if you wish to use your equity for something else. The Potting Shed Hopefully, August was a month of plenty for you and September should also bring forth a good harvest: a reward for all of the hard work in spring and early summer.

As autumn approaches, early crops such as French and runner beans, courgettes, tomatoes and sweetcorn will be coming to an end. However, now is the time to lift onions and potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days: they have completely the opposite storage conditions. Onions should be kept in the light and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed. On the other hand, potatoes should be stored in a dark, dry, frost-free place, such as a garage or shed, to prevent them turning green or rotting. Store them in hessian or paper sacks and check from time-to-time. Also make sure to dry them out well before storing.

Even though the winter months are approaching there are several crops which are hardy enough to withstand the winter and will provide a steady supply of fresh leaves through to next spring. September is a good time to start sowing and planting the following crops; • Winter lettuces (“Valdor”, “Arctic King” or “Winter Density” are good varieties to choose).

• Spring greens –seeds can be sown in modules for planting out in October.

• Spinach.

• Lamb’s lettuce and oriental leaves.

• Onion sets and garlic.

• Planting broad beans in the autumn is a good way to avoid blackfly as they crop earlier.

Clear the soil of spent crops; leaving them to rot on the soil may spread diseases. You could then rough dig and cover the ground for the winter or you could sow “green manures.” Field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia are just a few examples. These green manures perform three main functions; • They provide compost material.

• They help prevent weed growth.

• They soak up nutrients that would normally be washed away by winter rains.

• If you have a light soil, they can be left in overwinter but those with clay soils benefit from digging them in when you do your autumn/winter dig.

A few jobs that need doing this month include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms(1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over –cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, leave new canes unpruned.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

The “D” Word - Only 10% of Brits Have Planned for Death by Nick Ash, Managing Director

New research has revealed that only 10% have planned for their end-of-life which suggests there is still a huge stigma surrounding death in the UK. With death potentially causing financial catastrophes as well as grief, breaking the taboo around confronting death is still a big issue among the British.

According to Sue Ryder Charity, out of 2,002 people who were surveyed, 68% of respondents do not have a will and 70% have not even talked to their loved ones about dying. Furthermore, it was found that 67% did not realise they could document where they wish to die in a specific location. Shockingly, only 10% of people surveyed had begun or completed planning for their death.

Heidi Travis, Chief Executive of Sue Ryder, said, “We all need to start talking about the ‘D’ word. Many of us plan for weddings and births, holidays and careers, yet we still shy away from planning for our death. Current research shows that only a quarter of deaths will be sudden. The period following a terminal illness diagnosis can be short as well as incredibly emotional, so don’t leave it until then to start planning.”

“It may be easier to think about our ‘bucket list’ or the songs we want played at our funeral, but by taking the time to think about whether we would prefer to die in a hospice or at home, writing a will, setting up a lasting power of attorney or making an advance care plan, it is possible to plan for a better death,” she added.

With the British people so reluctant to discuss, prepare or plan for their passing, St Mary’s University in London has set up a support site called ‘The Art of Dying Well’. Margaret Doherty, Director of ‘The Art of Dying Well’, said, “The ‘D’ word is still the elephant in the room. Fortunately, social media has helped to turbo-charge the ‘D’ conversation, and inspirational individuals have come forward to share their stories about love, loss, life, death and dying, but there’s still much to do to help each of us face our own mortality and those of the people we love.”

Citizens Advice – Eighty Years Old and Still Providing a Valuable Service Citizens Advice in South Lincolnshire reflects on a year of developing operations, while working through the challenges of reduced funding, and the organisation looks forward to the future, in the year when Citizens Advice nationally celebrates eighty years of service, which started on September 4th 1939, the day after the Second World War broke out.

In her review of the year, South Lincolnshire Chief Officer, Lisa Barwell, highlighted the progress the organisation had made locally, especially the increased reach into the local community through embracing new technology such as e-mail, webchat and video link, and the introduction of the initial check process, which empowers clients to help themselves, thus protecting face-to-face service for those who need it.

Meanwhile the Research and Campaigns Team have spent a busy year gathering evidence on the most frequent local issues in order to make the case for change in policies or practices nationally that might help clients.

Summing up in her review, Lisa paid tribute to staff and volunteers, saying, “Our achievements this year, as in all years, would not be possible without the hard work and dedicated support of volunteers, staff and funders, to all of whom I offer a very big thank you.”

Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire is a charity, part of the national network of Citizens Advice organisations, and operates three main offices, seven outreaches, and a home-visit service in the area. by Eileen Le Voi - Safe Local Trades It seems that not a week goes by lately without warning of a new scam – with cyber criminals becoming more and more sophisticated. An e-mail from a supposed legal or Government source can be so convincing that it can fool even the shrewdest among us, as can a request to transfer money or pay a bill.

However, the fight against scams is hotting up. As well as the many reliable channels which can inform and advise about scams (including the UK Action Fraud), there is also a user-friendly Friends Against Scams website, (a National Trading Standards Scams Team initiative which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to ‘Take a Stand Against Scams.’)

And what’s more, Friends Against Scams offers a free, easy-to-use online learning service where anyone can learn about the different types of scams and how to spot and support a victim.

The session – which takes around fifteen minutes to complete – can be done in the comfort of your own home, in the workplace or even on your phone while on the move. Don’t be caught out by things like: • Phishing – this will most likely be an e-mail from the ‘bank’ designed to trick victims into revealing personal information and passwords.

• Phishing: where you receive an e-mail that pretends to be from an authority (e.g. your bank) in which you’re asked to give out your passwords or personal information such as your address, telephone number, or other data.

• Pharming - the fraudulent practice of directing online users to a fake website, which mimics the appearance of a real / legitimate one • Romance Scams - a confidence scam whereby a criminal displays fake romantic intentions towards a victim in order to gain their affection to then extort money.

• Impersonation of UK officials - criminals impersonate a UK official to obtain personal information by claiming that the victim is due a refund or must make an urgent payment.

• Ad Clicking: where hackers encourage you to click on a link (perhaps by e-mail, or on a webpage) which will then open malware or simply ask for your personal information.

Director Norman Tuckey, who heads an eightstrong experienced team which includes sons Luke and Jay, said: “We pride ourselves on providing a personal, bespoke service. Solar reflective fabrics, which can reduce heat and glare by 40 percent, are becoming increasingly popular as are Vision or ‘day and night’ blinds and also sails for conservatories.”

A member of the British Blind & Shutter Association (BBSA), the company also reports an increase in demand for motorised blinds which are remotely operated and have rechargeable motors.

These have no hanging cords or chains and are therefore child safe and ideal for the disabled and the elderly.

Norman said the company wins a lot of repeat business from customers, largely due to the personal, bespoke service it provides.

He said: “We are a local company that employs local people, and we’re always happy to chat and recommend blinds or window fittings to suit you.”

Autumn Watch for Pets With the move from August into September we are now officially into the autumn and with the change of seasons, a new set of challenges also arrives for our pets. The warmth and wetness of this summer has allowed many parasites to survive and thrive. Keeping up with preventative flea treatment is still very important, especially if you don’t want a colony of fleas luxuriating in your house when the winter central heating is turned on!

If a tick is removed within twenty-four hours of attachment, it is unlikely to pass on tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and Borrelia – two very nasty conditions - but unless you are very fastidious checking all of your animal’s skin, it is easier to treat with effective parasiticides.

Flies are beginning to die down and the risk of fly strike is reducing but not gone.It is still important to check rabbits on a daily basis, to see if they are dirty at the back end or have any open wounds that flies will be attracted to.

This also applies to dogs and cats that are old and unable to groom themselves well. Matts of fur can hide skin problems that attract flies - geriatric animals can get fly strike too. It is an awful condition which often has a tragic outcome, so is best prevented.

The humidity throughout the summer has meant that we have seen more ticks than ever before. Autumn is a key time in their life-cycle where they are looking for a new host, (mostly our dogs and cats) for a fresh blood feed.

If your dog is short-haired, it is easy to check him every day for signs of ticks, although some really tiny ticks look just like a skin tag and can be easily overlooked. I find it easier to give a combined flea and tick treatment to

Walking though woods that are changing into autumn colours is wonderful at this time of year, but Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI) is still around and you must be vigilant. When walking in woods, make sure your dog stays well hydrated. It is possible that harvest mites may be a factor and spraying your dog against these may help, but their involvement in the disease is still not proven. A dog that becomes ill with lethargy, vomiting and diarrhoea within seventy-two hours of a forest walk may have SCI. Fortunately, it is a rare condition and the cause is still unknown. It can be fatal, but with supportive care through your vet, most animals will recover, so if you have any worries, get in touch sooner rather than later.

Finally, yes, the nights are getting darker and car accidents involving cats increase in frequency. If your pet wears a collar, then a reflective one is very helpful.

Bring your cats in earlier before the dusk fully settles and hopefully enjoy some lovely warm autumn days together.

Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice offers expert palliative care to adults with life-limiting conditions like cancer or heart failure.

Joely Garner, senior community fundraiser, explains: “At Sue Ryder, we believe that everyone has the right to die as they wish. We do everything we can to take the fear out of dying. In the past two years, the hospice has cared for 66 people and their loved ones from the PE6 areas, including The Deepings community. Our care is offered free of charge but costs us £9000 a day.”

Local fundraiser, Judie Allen, who raises thousands of pounds each year, said: “I’ve been fundraising for the hospice since 1990 and enjoy being involved in all sorts of events. I’ve seen the difference it makes to patients and their families, so it makes it all worthwhile.”

Joely added: “The Deepings community is full of wonderful people, like Judie, fundraising for their local hospice and their support truly means the world to us. We are always looking for new supporters to help us achieve our vision of providing more care to more people.”
