To all the parents reading, I’ll let you decide whether or not that’s a good thing! One way to help fill those long days this month will be to join the ever-popular treasure hunt in this month’s issue, for which the prize is an impressive £50. Our “Events and Gigs Guide” on page 38 is full of great ideas too, along with this month’s “School’s Out” section on page 36. There’s little doubt that this part of the world is increasingly well catered for, in keeping young people occupied during their holidays.

Our feature on the ancient Bowthorpe Oak, on page 28 brought back vividly how, for some of us, climbing in such trees and spending hours, tracking and den-building in Bourne Woods would have been as far as our “summer fun activities” went!

Professional Ear Care and Safe Syringing

Y

our ears are just as important as your eyes and teeth. Whilst most people will visit an optician and a dentist at least once a year and sometimes more for a check-up, the ears tend to be neglected.

Good hearing and healthy ears play an important part in your quality of life. If you have ever experienced reduced, or even lost your hearing for a short period of time, then you’ll know just how frustrating and lonely it can be. For some people, this could make them feel very vulnerable, especially if they live alone.

If you feel you have a problem with your ears, don’t just ignore it.

There are many conditions that can affect your hearing, such as ear infections or ear wax build up. Some are very straightforward to fix and generally, as with so many other things in life, the sooner you have them checked, the sooner you can get back to normal.

Ear wax is completely normal; it is produced by the ear to provide protection. Ears are actually self-cleaning and you should never attempt to remove the wax yourself. Although it can be tempting, using items such as cotton buds can actually push the wax further down the ear canal and end up totally blocking your ear.

The cotton wool tip can even damage your ear canal..... as can matches, hair grips and twigs!

To help reduce the chances of problems with your ears, you should always try and keep them dry and protected from water.

Using an ear plug when you go swimming or even showering is advisable. Wet ears can cause eczema, dermatitis, runny ears and infections. You could use cotton wool as a plug BUT ONLY if you smear it with Vaseline to ensure you do not damage the ear canal with the fibres.

If you have an ear problem, it is recommended that you see a trained, competent practitioner in ear care. They have specialist equipment that allows them to see into your ear canal with the correct lighting, and are able to provide the correct and safe treatment. For ear wax, ear syringing / irrigation, when performed by qualified practitioners, is safe and effective. Please do not try internet “do it yourself ear syringing kits”.

Effective treatment does not necessarily mean expensive treatment. At the Wellhead Practice, Jane Russell offers patients an initial assessment for £10. Your ears will be examined, and you’ll be given recommendations, ranging from general advice to suggested treatment. Ear syringing starts at £30.

Brand-new Care Home opening in August A brand-new care home on Main Road, Tallington, is soon to open its doors, when it officially opens next month. Tallington Lodge Care Home will be a luxury, thirty bed care home, which will be hosting a Public Open Day on August 20th.

History

Discovering . . . The Empire Cinema

T

he hey-day of cinema going in England was undoubtedly during the middle years of the last century, particularly during and immediately after the Second World War of 1939-45, a convenient form of escapism enjoyed by most families once and often twice a week.

Hollywood movies were the most popular and American screen stars became household names while the British film industry produced many highly acclaimed films as well as a large number of B features. Cinemas sprang up across the land ranging from the luxury picture palaces of London and the big cities to smaller auditoriums, usually with grand names such as the Ritz, Tudor, Princess, Palace and Imperial, all chosen to reflect the romance and adventure they were screening rather than the comfort offered, but all well patronised with long queues outside on Saturday evenings.

Going to the pictures became such a habit with the British public that even the smallest towns soon had their own cinema and so in September 1928, Market Deeping joined the nation-wide craze and although the population was only around 1,000, the owners were confident of attracting patronage from surrounding villages.

The 500-seat Empire Cinema designed by the architect Francis Burdett Ward was built on the site of a thatched cottage in Church Street for Jack Bancroft’s

Peterborough-based company. It was an immediate success and remained in business for the next 35 years during which time the industry changed dramatically.

Silent films were originally shown but a sound system was installed in 1930. There were many other technical advances in screening in the following years to attract larger audiences but the constant need to upgrade became expensive for smaller cinemas and when the new widescreen CinemaScope system arrived in 1956, the Empire was no longer attracting sufficiently large audiences to maintain it as a viable business proposition and it closed in May 1963, the last film shown being the Hollywood comedy Mr Hobbs Takes A Vacation (1962) starring James Stewart and Maureen O’Hara.

The cinema was subsequently sold to Market Deeping Motors for use as a car salesroom which continued trading until 2012 when it again changed hands and in the summer of 2014 the building re-opened as an independent training facility known as the Empire Gym, the name being chosen to reflect the building’s original function. Restoration work took eight months to complete when the new owners maintained the original Art Deco frontage, a potent reminder of the cinema age in a small town.

Empire Gym Sends out a Challenge!

eal buzz.com, the active living website, suggests that only 7% of the population attends a gym. The 2011 Census confirmed the population of Market Deeping and surrounding villages to be circa 23,000. Therefore, according to Real buzz.com statistics, only 1,600 local people are regular gym goers.

Empire Gym believes however that so many more people yearn to become members of the fitness community, but are prevented from doing so by their fear of the gym environment.

In its first three years, Empire Gym has encouraged many local people to enter the fitness community for the first time and start their journey to better health and fitness, and for some to become fitness enthusiasts in their own right.

The challenge for the fitness industry in general is to find a way to encourage those who fear the gym environment to come and get involved. Empire Gym achieves this by ensuring the facility is friendly, welcoming and clean, and that access to quality advice from first class instructors is immediately available, but probably more important, that existing members welcome and encourage new members. As a result, more firsttime gym goers continue to join us from all age groups and begin to realise their fitness potential. I believe our message is now gaining momentum locally.

In order to continue the progress and practically demonstrate the benefits of regular exercise, I am seeking a number of local people to accept a challenge.

Empire Gym is offering free three month gym membership to three first-time gym goers, each of whom would have a particular fitness ambition, (for example, a wish to change body shape, improve cardio-vascular fitness, increase strength and stamina etc.) We would provide a personal trainer, a fitness programme and dietary advice, in exchange for allowing us to record and publish your progress. Successful applicants must be committed to the cause, and prepared to follow the advice of the trainer in respect of diet and exercise.

Matters End Polio Now with Rotary Ride 2017

“Rotary Ride” is a series of charity bike riding events being held by Rotary clubs across the UK and Ireland on Father’s Day weekend (17th-18th June) to raise money and awareness of End Polio Now. The Deepings Rotary Club opted for a slightly different approach, however, and, with the support of The Empire Gym, spent a very energetic five hours on the gym’s running machines. Approximately 140 miles were run and over £1,000 was raised. Empire Gym was rightly awarded a Community Service award by the Rotary Club of the Deepings, not just for this event, but for all they do in supporting the community. The Rotary Club thank everyone for having taken part and for all the generous donations made for this most worthy of causes.

Deeping Emotional Support Group The following request recently came our way: “We are launching a new support group in the Deepings which hopefully will bring together local people from all sections of the community who are suffering from, or have suffered from, anxiety, depression, loneliness, isolation, and also those who care for people in this situation. Listeners will be attending to offer support.

Our first drop-in session is at the Cinnamon Café, (8, The Precincts), in Market Deeping from 7.30pm 9.00pm on Monday August 7th, and will be hosted every first and third Monday of each month.

The concept is to provide a nonjudgemental, warm and inviting environment in a local cafe (open just for the meeting), so that people can come along to talk and be heard. We are not offering a clinical service (although my co-founder is a qualified health professional in this field), but instead a forum, so that people can share how they are feeling, good or bad, and meet other people who understand and can empathise.

We already have a presence on social media, but we want to try and reach people who may not use Facebook.

The Rotary Club “Bake-Off Challenge” 2017 Early July saw the annual “BakeOff Challenge” take place at the Deeping School, with competitors from Rotary, Inner Wheel and Interact all attempting to make the best cookies.

Deepings Swimmers Excel on Tour in The Netherlands Deepings Swimming Club enjoyed an outstanding weekend of racing at the beginning of July, winning twenty-two medals at the Netherlands Invitational open meet against international competition, from as far afield as Indonesia, South Africa and America.

Seven swimmers from the twentyone-strong Deepings squad, aged between ten and twenty, stood on the podium in Eindhoven, winning nine gold, eight silver and five bronze medals.

The squad wore specially designed T-shirts during the competition, which were kindly sponsored by Anglian Water.

Fourteen-year-old Louis Metselaar was in superb form, winning four golds including all three breaststroke titles and the 200m freestyle. Lexi Cooper (gold in 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 200m IM, plus silver in 200m breaststroke)

Deepings’ Isabel Spinley Wins Bronze for Britain at European Junior Swimming Championships Deepings Swimming Club butterfly record holder, Isabel Spinley, has won a bronze medal at the European Junior Swimming Championships in Israel. Isabel was called up to represent Great Britain for the first time, after some outstanding swims at the British Championships in April this year.

Swap the British Winter for the New Zealand Summer!

There’s no better time of the year to visit New Zealand than in the months between January and April, when the country is basking in glorious summer and autumn sunshine. Whether you fancy soaking up some summer sun on one of the many glorious beaches, heading into the mountains or enjoying one of the many wine and food festivals on at this time of year, there is so much to see and to do. Here is a small selection of ideas that you could explore in this stunning country.

The Hobbit New Zealand lays claim to the breath-taking and iconic landscapes that Frodo and Sam trekked across in “The Lord of the Rings”, and its epic three-part prequel, “The Hobbit”.

There really is no better time to discover a slice of Middle Earth for yourself.

In Matamata, nestled in the heart of the North Island’s Waikoto region, you’ll find The Shire, enveloped within the rolling hills and lush emerald grass of a picturesque, private sheep farm. The Shire has been permanently rebuilt for the filming of “The Hobbit”, so you can wander round the hobbit holes, The Green Dragon inn, mill, bridge and gardens. Daily tours operate from Rotorua, and last two hours.

Nelson/Abel Tasman National Park Perched at the north-western tip of the South Island, Nelson is New Zealand’s sunniest region; its sun-drenched landscapes full of mountains for hiking, forests for exploring, and beaches for whiling away the long summer days.

A visit to the country’s smallest and only coastal National Park, Abel Tasman, is a must-do activity during the summer.

Lodge, set mid-way between Nelson and the Abel Tasman National Park? Located on the Kina Peninsula with an unspoilt beach only a minute’s walk away, and offering world-class accommodation in a spectacular setting, Almyra offers luxuriously appointed suites with private decks so you can relax and enjoy the views. The area is a prime spot for many outdoor activities, such as kayaking, walking and sailing, a highlight being the Abel Tasman Coastal Track. There is also a range of day tours available into the park – including scenic cruises, combination cruise/walk packages, sea kayaking or perhaps an overnight stay in one of the stunning beachfront lodges.

Wineries While New Zealand has long been famed for its stunning, unspoilt landscapes, it also has international acclaim for its fine wines.

A visit to a cellar door is often more than just a wine tasting.

Wineries make every effort to provide visitors with a truly memorable experience, with staff who have an extensive knowledge and passion for wine production. Many wineries also offer tasting platters, lunch or dinner or a five-course degustation menu. The Classic New Zealand Wine Trail is a 240-mile self-drive touring route that takes you through five of New Zealand’s most interesting and scenic regions.

In the Hawkes Bay region, (known for its stunning reds, chardonnay and Art Deco architecture), you can spend a day cycling around nine of the region’s wineries, all within a leisurely eight mile cycle ride – great for serious wine lovers and no need to worry about who’s going to do the driving!

Roast Grouse The glorious twelfth, August 12th, is the first day of the grouse hunting season. Ask your butcher to order a brace in for you.

This simple recipe shows off the meat at its best. Roast grouse is traditionally served with bread sauce, game chips and watercress.

Method 1 Pre-heat the oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6. Put a roasting tin into the oven ready to take the grouse.

Season each bird inside and out, put a knob of butter and a sprig of thyme inside the cavity of each bird, and tuck a sprig of thyme under each leg.

3 Heat a little butter in an oven-proof pan.

Sear the birds on their backs and on each side and the breast until golden brown.

Turn the birds breast-side upwards, lay two rashers of streaky bacon over the breast of each grouse, and smear some more butter over the bacon.

5 Transfer to the pre-heated roasting tin and put in the oven.

Roast for between 16 and 20 minutes, basting at least twice during that time, depending on size. (You can tell whether they are cooked by pressing the breasts with your finger. They should be springy.

If they’re too soft, cook for a couple of minutes more).

7 Leave to rest in a warm place for 10 minutes before serving.

The Potting Shed During this month you should see a good return on the time that has been invested earlier in the year, and be gathering the fruits of your labour: visits to the supermarket fruit and veg counter should be far more infrequent, as you now have a daily supply of wonderful fresh produce.

A good job to do this month is to take stock of where you have planted this year’s crops and start plans for next year’s crop rotation.

The weather has been very erratic so far; we have seen some of the hottest days for a long time, along with some pretty wet weather, so frequent watering is a must. Putting mulch around vegetables will help retain the moisture.

However, as it is drier, the weeds are less rampant and the occasional hoeing keeps them at bay, so – more time watering, less time weeding.

It’s more about harvesting in August rather than planting but there are still one or two crops that you can sow: mainly lettuces and salad leaves, spring onions, radishes, Japanese onion seeds (in situ) and a last batch of carrots and turnips. However, as you harvest your crops and create some space you can transplant winter and spring cauliflowers, sprouting broccoli and kale, and sow a few more seeds for spring cabbage. If you wish to store garlic, onions and shallots they will need to be thoroughly dried out and this can be achieved by lifting them carefully and laying them on the ground in the sun or spreading them out on racks. They can then be strung and hung, but not in the kitchen as the atmosphere is too moist; somewhere cool and dry is advisable.

Other jobs to do this month:● Don’t forget to pinch out the tops of climbing beans when they reach the top of the canes, as this will encourage growth lower down, and harvest regularly before they become tough and stringy: if runner beans are left unpicked for any length of time cropping is greatly reduced - you can let some grow on to produce bean seeds for next year. ● Outdoor tomatoes should have their growth stopped by the middle of the month – nip out the leading growing shoot just above the highest truss. ● Be on the lookout for potato blight.

adical proposals to update the way in which wills are written and interpreted in the UK have been put forward by the Law Commission.

1. A small mistake won’t make your will void. Under current laws, a minor mistake can make your entire will invalid. All wills have to meet strict formal requirements, with no room for even the smallest of errors. The Law Commission proposes to give courts the power to overlook these – the judge would need to find, on the balance of probabilities, that the deceased intended the document to be their final testament.

2. A text, e-mail or voicemail might qualify as a will.

Under the proposal to bypass formal requirements, the Law Commission also suggested broadening the scope of what could be considered a will – so that electronic documents, including sound or video recordings, could all be included.

3. Your will could be electronic. In the not-too-distant future, many wills are likely to be executed electronically.

Given the rapid pace of technological change, the Law Commission recommended giving the Lord Chancellor powers to make new regulations allowing for electronic wills as the technology develops. However, the Law Commission was wary of wills being signed electronically using current systems.

Commission have decided that these rules may need updating.

4. Children could make a will. Currently, you have to be 18 years old to execute a will. The Law Commission proposed lowering this age to 16.

These proposals are just for consultation at the moment and won’t be law for a number of years (if ever), so we are all stuck with the current rules.

5. Getting married won’t revoke your will. It might come as a surprise to some that getting married automatically invalidates any wills you may have previously written.

So the best advice is still … don’t take any chances, and make your will now.

6. Victorian-era rules will be updated. The case law used to decide whether someone has the mental capacity to write a will dates from the Victorian era. It refers to ‘disorders of the mind and delusions’. The Law

Current legislation prevents witnesses to a will – and their spouses or civil partners – from receiving any gifts from it.

This removes the temptation for witnesses to forge a will in their own favour.

t really must feel like we keep talking about pensions and, to be fair, we do! The rules around pensions have changed significantly over the last few years and will have a major impact both on how you save for retirement and access your money once you retire. You may have heard about Pension freedom. The new pension rules have given people far more choice over what they can do with their pension pots.

What used to happen?

For most people, when you retired you could take up to 25% of your pension as tax-free cash and the rest had to be turned into a retirement income by buying an annuity.

The new rules: There are several ways you can now use your pension pot. You can: ● Take tax-free cash from your pension. ● Take additional cash sums from your pension when you want them. ● Take all your pension as cash in one go. ● Buy a guaranteed income for life – an annuity. ● Invest your pension in funds designed to provide you with a flexible retirement income – called ‘drawdown’ (the income is not guaranteed for life).

You will need to consider your tax position: If you take cash out of your pension, then 25% of the withdrawal is likely to be tax-free (the other 75% is the taxable element).

The taxable element is added to the rest of your income for the year and you pay income tax on this in the usual way. If you take a large sum of cash, you could push your income into a higher tax bracket and end up paying higher-rate or even additional-rate income tax on the lump sum. This increase in income may also mean you are no longer eligible for certain benefits you’re claiming.

You need to be careful when selecting your retirement options and, if you have a pension, you should now be thinking about your options.

The Bowthorpe Oak - Improved Access and Ready to Welcome More Visitors

Bowthorpe Park Farm is a traditional mixed, family farm, (located near Manthorpe, between Bourne and Stamford on the A6121), with a very special claim to fame. The “Bowthorpe Oak” is well-known, holding the Guinness World Record for having the largest girth of any living English oak tree. Its girth measures 13.3 metres (at 1.5 metres above the ground). The age of the tree is unknown, but oak trees can grow at a rate of one metre per one hundred years, which could make the tree over 1300 years old!

In 1768, the then-resident of Bowthorpe Park Farm fitted the tree with a door, roof and pigeon loft. Oak trees hollow out naturally, but George Pauncefort esq. was also reported as having carved out the tree and fitted benches around the inside and then hosting dinner parties for up to twelve people. Some of the nails used to fix the benches in place can still be seen.

The tree sits in a grass field on the farm and, until recently, the farm animals were free to graze around it. However, as part of the work carried out recently, access to the tree has been made easier with a new roadway and carpark, making it a short walk to see the Bowthorpe Oak. The tree in itself is worth a visit but, in addition, visitors can now walk around the newly-fenced paddocks to see some of the farm animals.

Pigs, goats, sheep and some of the farm’s pedigree Lincoln Red cattle herd are all on show, with some activities for children.

The health of the tree is very important to the Blanchard family who run the farm, and so it is inspected every year by an arboricultural consultant. With increasing numbers of people visiting the oak, advice was given to install a fence around the tree to protect the roots from compaction. The tree is in good condition and comes into leaf each year and produces many acorns in the autumn.

The Blanchards are fifth generation farmers at Bowthorpe Park Farm. Their farm is a mixed holding, growing crops and rearing livestock. This works well, with the cereal crops being

used to feed the animals and providing straw for bedding.

The animal manure is then used to help feed the crops, whilst temporary grassland in the rotation helps with weed control.

Bowthorpe Park Farm opens its gates to the public over the weekends and bank holidays. They also welcome school trips, tourist groups and clubs for educational visits, with a talk on the farm and its animals, during the week and in the evenings.

They plan to keep adding more and will be running specialised events, so please follow them on social media to keep up to date.

In the Hot Seat

IN THE HOT SEAT Kathryn Wallis, known as ‘Fyzz’, is a singer /songwriter from Deeping St James who performs both solo and with the Fyzz Wallis Band. She is married to Stuart, also a local musician and Parish Councillor, as well as being mum to her two sons, Benedict and Christian. When Fyzz isn’t busy singing or with her family, she works as the school librarian at Sleaford High School. Fyzz loves to collect Lego figures and pocket watches, enjoys long distance running, reading graphic novels and follows Leicester City Football Club – busy lady!

Where were you born, and what is your favourite memory of your childhood?

I was born in Kettering and grew up in Leicestershire but have lived in Deeping for the last twenty years. As a little girl, I was a big Wonder Woman fan. I used to dress up as her all the time. One day, my dad had been doing some maintenance work on our house and left a ladder out in the garden. I used it, whilst dressed as Wonder Woman to climb on the flat roof of our garage. When my aunt and uncle came to see us they were greeted

by Wonder Woman on the garage roof! They looked a bit shocked, but they couldn’t coax me down until they called me Wonder Woman!

How would you describe yourself in only five words?

Passionate. Determined.

Energetic. Eccentric.

Insatiable.

If there was one thing which you could change about Deeping, what would it be and why?

I don’t know - we came here thinking it would be a good place to raise a family, and it is.

Who has had the greatest influence on your life and why?

My family always took me to church, and my faith has always remained an influence.

One of my biggest recent influences has been Leicester City star, Jamie Vardy. He’s gone from non-league to premier league and on to international football, based on talent alone. He was dropped as an apprentice for being ‘too short’, but kept going. At only five feet tall, I can relate to that!

Which two characters, alive or not, would you most enjoy sharing a meal with and why?

Elizabeth I and Cleopatra. I love history, especially 40

the female leaders of the past. I’d love to hear them talk - and as they were both such articulate and capable linguists, I’m sure they’d find a way - and imagine the food they’d order!

Although I think it’s important in these troubled times not to retreat into escapism, or think things around here won’t change, this is our world, after all, and we need to be a part of what happens in it.

What advice would you give to a “sixteen-year-old you”?

I spend my working day with teenage girls, so find myself in a position like this quite frequently!

The advice I sometimes give them, which would also work for me would be: Being young basically sucks, but hang in there, because being an adult, and making your own choices is fun, including the mistakes.

• Never let children too close to the barbecue.

• Use only recognised firelighters or starter fuels on charcoal barbecues.

• If you’re a gas barbecue user, ensure the tap is off before changing the cylinder.

• When choosing a barbecue, stability is essential ensure the one you choose is strong and sturdy • Check your barbecue is in good condition (particularly if you have not used it for some time) and look for loose or damaged parts that may need adjustment or repair.

Scanning - Tips and Tricks

W

ith many people now having multifunction printers at home, scanning and copying has become available to many of us. As a result, questions on scanning are very common.

Setting up and using the scanner We will use Microsoft’s Windows Fax and Scan here as it available to all. This is a basic tool with very little by way of features, but the principles are the same for more complex scanning solutions.

Open Windows Fax and Scan (if you can’t find it, do a search for it)

The scanning window will open and you will be given a choice of ‘Preview’ or ‘Scan’. Before making that scan though, it is important to change the settings to meet the required use of the document that you are scanning.

File Type: For photos use JPG. Resolution: 300dpi is the most common default resolution and will suit most needs.

Where are my scanned images stored?

In the case of Windows Fax and Scan, the scanned images are stored in your Documents folder under a subfolder called Scanned Documents.

Every scanner manufacturer has their own scanner software with more features than Windows Fax and Scan. It is important to check where this stores its scans as it can be frustrating trying to find them.

This information will be held in the Options for each of these programs.

Profile: Two choices here – Text or Photo? In most of cases it will be Photo.

You can now insert the document that you wish to scan onto the scanner/printer glass bed.

What is OCR? Most multifunction printers now support OCR, (Optical Character Recognition).

When creating a scan, most are created as PDF or JPG files, document and image files that are viewable, but not immediately editable.

If you wish to create a document that you can edit, such as a text document in Word, then this process is called OCR. The scan is taken as normal but an extra step is added, whereby the software processes the scanned image to identify any text on the page. It will then create a word processing document (such as a .docx for Word) that will allow you to edit the content.

This is something I hear on a daily basis, and the quick answer is ‘no’.

When your estate agent recommends a conveyancing solicitor, licensed conveyancer or property lawyer, it is likely the firm they are recommending are paying them a “referral fee”.

This fee, which can be in the hundreds of pounds, is usually passed on to you, the client.

I strongly recommend that you get at least three quotes for your conveyancing. Fees for leasehold and freeholds within different valuation brackets can vary widely. Also search for reviews of the firms you are interested in working with.

ive years ago, following her father Kenny’s spinal surgery, Lucy Goldsmith stepped in to ensure that Kenny’s painting business of over ten years stayed afloat. From just helping carry ladders at first, Lucy’s contribution was soon to include her commencing a Level 3 Advanced Craft apprenticeship in painting and decorating, which she completed in 2015. The prestigious CITB “Pride of Construction Daily Mirror Hero of Construction Award” came Lucy’s way in 2015, as she again worked tirelessly, following Kenny’s triple heart by-pass operation, which was again threatening the business.

At around this time, sister Emma became involved, taking over the administrative side of the business, and so K Goldsmith & Daughters was born. Dad needed time to recover fully and due to Emma and Lucy’s hard work and dedication, the business went from strength to strength. Lucy’s partner Jack came on board and began labouring, but was soon encouraged to complete a minimum twoyear apprenticeship, which was to lead to him being offered a full-time position.

In 2015, Kenny encouraged Emma to complete her NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration, and as her confidence grew, she was encouraged to network and become an active member of ‘Bourne in Business’. She is also currently vice chairperson of SLGTA (South Lincs Group Training Association).

Lucy and Emma actively support CITB (Construction Industry Training Board), promoting construction to the next generation and, in particular, getting women involved in construction.

More bad luck arrived in December 2016 with Kenny requiring major bowel surgery. Again, both girls stepped up and this time Jack came into his own, demonstrating his commitment to the family business and ensuring that customers wouldn’t be let down. Upon Kenny’s returning to work in April 2017, Emma, Lucy and Jack were rewarded.

K Goldsmith & Daughters Ltd was formed and all three became shareholders in this most familyoriented of businesses.

Summer 2017 will see granddaughter Ellie delivering leaflets, cleaning equipment and washing the vans. She foresees a possible career as an interior designer, so look out for those colourful vans in the future, as they advertise K Goldsmith, Daughters & Granddaughter Ltd!

Meet the New Mayor (in her own words) Councillor Mrs Pauline Redshaw

I came to live in Market Deeping during the late sixties, when my husband’s work was transferred to Peterborough from South London. The community was very welcoming and although at the time I wasn’t able to work, as my daughter was very young, I soon made contacts with other ‘Newcomers’ as we were called.

Living in a new road, many of the occupants were young people with children, and soon a baby-sitting group was formed, the pay being in hours, not money, with a cup of coffee and a biscuit.

I met another young mum and, being teachers, we found a job that we could share, teaching and child-minding combined.

One worked the morning session while the other looked after the children and, in the afternoon, we swapped places.

Eventually my husband decided to train as a teacher, and while he was at college I found a job, first at Arthur Mellows Village College in Glinton and then at the Community school in Market Deeping.

Sadly, my husband died and it meant I wasn’t able to help with the baby -sitting group and evenings became a bit lonely. Although I was working full-time at school, my friends thought I needed adult company, so they suggested I stood for the Parish Council. I had always been interested in the Community, so off I went canvassing and I gained a seat. After

a few years, I met my husband Rob, at the Deeping Show Dance, where he was cooking the burgers!

In 1987 the Parish Council became a Town Council. I had gone into the meeting as a Chairman and came away as a Mayor! It was then that the round of Civic Duties started.

It is a great pleasure to go to various towns and meet their Councillors and be able to discuss their problems as well as our own --- and guess what, we find they have similar problems to ours - grass cutting, potholes, development issues etc.

I couldn’t do the job of Mayor without Rob’s support. He is a great consort. He always finds people to talk to and very often finds they have plenty of things in common. When I have been asked if I would consider being Mayor again, I always ask his opinion. ’OK,’ he says,’ if you must, just tell me where we are going and is it a suit or casual?’

It is an honour to be the Mayor. I’m very proud of our town, with its heritage, beautiful old buildings and the large number of volunteers who work tirelessly with many organisations to support the community both young and old.

The town is looking forward to its main event of the year , The Deeping Raft Race. Let’s hope folk have remembered to ‘build their raft’. Good luck everyone and let’s hope the sun shines.

Sexting

aking over from Sgt Mosley’s Monthly Musings, my intention is to publish interesting or insightful articles about real crime matters that we often deal with in the Bourne and Deeping areas.

This month, we take a look at the growing trend of “Sexting” which we are increasingly seeing reported to us by concerned parents and schools.

What is Sexting?

Sexting (or “sex texting”) is the sending or receiving of sexually explicit or sexually suggestive images, messages, or video via a mobile phone, social media applications / the internet.

Examples of sexting include sending: • nude or nearly nude photos or “selfies” • videos that show nudity, sex acts, or simulated sex • text messages that propose sex or refer to sex acts Facts and Figures Since the start of 2017, in the Bourne / Deeping / Stamford area there have been 22 crimes recorded involving the taking / sharing of sexual images of children.

This was largely involving the sharing of sexual images by young people in their teens.

Popular Culture The harsh reality is that teenagers are “sexting” each other for a variety of reasons. Two consenting teenagers

in a relationship may share images to flirt with each other.

Sexting happens as some teens think it is cool, or want to increase their popularity, and see it as a joke. More sinister, is the sharing of images to embarrass others or the threat to share images if the teenager doesn’t send more material.

The Law The law is clear -when you’re under 18 it’s against the law for anyone to take or have a sexual photo of you – even if it’s a selfie.

This means that if you are a girl or boy under 18 and you take a sexual image of yourself or share an image of this nature, you’re breaking the law (even if you are both over 16 and in a committed relationship!!)

Whilst the taking / sharing of indecent images will be recorded by police, the motivations for the sharing of images will determine whether or not further police action will be taken against the sender. Our role is to protect and educate young people who don’t realise that what they are doing is a criminal act, but to also seek out and deal with predators trying to secure images from young people for the purpose of gratification or manipulation.

Guidance Police will deal with any reports of sexting in a positive and helpful way. If you have any concerns about images that are available and beyond your control, you can contact your local Police for advice. Call 101.

Get to know your dog

or the last year, I have been training my chihuahua, Phoebe. At the same time, three of my sons, my daughter and my wife have been training our other dogs. Dog training has changed a lot over the last twenty years, with a greater understanding of dog behaviour.

The idea of dominance and forcing changes of behaviour has gone, and has been replaced with reward-based training, producing willing cooperation. The whole idea is to build a relationship and have fun. Most people do not want to compete at highlevel agility or obedience, but do want to be able to have some control and co-operation from their dogs.

We have had such fun training our dogs. Training (attempting to!) a chihuahua was a new challenge for me, especially as I seem to have a problem controlling my feet around such a little dog! It is also amazing how many treats a little dog can eat.

She particularly likes smoked mackerel, which may be great for training, but not so good smelling of fish for the rest of the day! Besides mastering the basics, (walking on the lead, sitting on command, recall and walking off the lead), we have done trick training and fun agility. We have taught our dogs to touch things with their nose or paws, and then used this to make people think they can find things on command (secretly using the scent from treats).

We have taught our dogs to weave between our legs and jump through our arms. Recently, we have combined a bit of agility and trickery and have our dogs jumping over and going under each other.

The main point of all this is building a strong relationship with your pet. At the same time, it is a lot of fun (as long as you do not take it too seriously).When you can influence your pet with rewards and you play and have fun with them, then you become the person they want to be with, above all other things. It does take time and patience, but it does not have to be forever - just enough to set up that important relationship.

No matter how much you think you know about training dogs, it is good to train with other people and other dogs. There will be classes to suit any ability. All dogs and owners should experience this basic training, to make the best of their relationships. There are many good trainers in the area.

Welcome Patrick Hunt - Our New Motoring Correspondent

P

atrick Hunt is Managing Director of Go Go Go Intensive, and a member of The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Go Go Go Intensive is the only Intensive Driving School in the UK to be affiliated to the IAM, the UK’s leading road safety charity.

I’d like to start off by thanking “Discovering Magazines” for inviting me to write a column in the motoring section of this magazine. My intention is to make it informative, keep readers up to date with current legislation, offer some tips on how you can drive more safely and how to improve your enjoyment when driving. You never know, I might even be able to squeeze in some bonhomie and humour as I get more comfortable writing this column. (“Steady on, Tiger. Leave the wise cracks to me!” – Ed.) It’s fair to say that the U.K. has one of the highest standards of driving in the world. The safest place in the world to drive is Micronesia, a sovereign island nation spread across the western Pacific Ocean, with 1.9 road deaths per 100,000 people, and only a total of two road deaths throughout the whole of 2015. The second safest is Sweden, with a ratio of 2.8 deaths per 100,000 people and the third safest is the UK with 2.9 vehicle deaths per 100,000. So, to all of you road users out there, I congratulate you and applaud you, as we have the second safest roads in Europe.

However, the most alarming statistic is that, in the UK, one in five new drivers crash in the first six months of passing their driving test. Road crashes are the biggest killer of young people in the UK today. It seems that most young people have little desire to treat driving as a skill for life, and just want to learn as cheaply and as quickly as possible.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists, (IAM), has agreed to donate a competition prize to readers of this column.

IAM Roadsmart offer advanced driver training and teach Roadcraft, the benchmark of police driving. By becoming an “Advanced Driver”, you will have more confidence on the road, improved skills and knowledge, opportunities to make better progress in your journey, cheaper insurance, and be the safest driver.
