Welcome to the January edition of...

At the time of writing, we’re still very much a part of 2016, with Christmas preparations underway, tills and Santa’s sleighbells ringing furiously. Everyone is perhaps thinking, “Well, what else can this year throw our way? Who could have foreseen the Brexit vote being Trumped by our American counterparts, just a few months later?”

Whatever happens on the international and the national stage in the months to come, let’s try to remember that the goodwill which we all share at this time of the year, (when “our present is remembered and our past is forgiven”), is still around, with some to spare, as we enter the new year.

It’s been a very challenging year for some of us in many various ways, and we all owe a massive hug and a thank-you to everyone who has helped each other, when times haven’t always been smooth. Life goes on, whether we’re in or out, or whoever happens to have the keys to The White House!

I hope you all have a “Scintillating Seventeen”, and enjoy this month’s issue.

I’ll echo Claire’s thoughts, and share with you all the view that recently came my way, regarding the pantomime that was the U.S. Presidential Election.

Could this whole fiasco, it was suggested, perhaps be the first case of “electile dysfunction?”

This month’s issue, as ever, will give you plenty of valuable advice from our wonderful contributors, whether it be in the sphere of health issues, legal matters, finance, food, travel, computer problems, motoring, consumer affairs and pets … the list goes on! There are two regular features which always seem to bring in a lot of very positive feedback from you, our readers.

At the one end of the age spectrum, the monthly spotlight on our local schools brings as much joy to us, as we compile the feature, as it does to the proud parents and teachers, whose “little dears” are in the spotlight.

Finally, the not so young Mr Needle continues to bring so much of interest and consummate journalistic style to his “Discovering…” features every month. Thank-you Rex – we all appreciate it, and are much the wiser for it.

Words from the Mayor Councillor Wayne Lester A very Happy New Year to you all.

This month I’ve included some fun photos of the Christmas Market Day. The market was well attended throughout the day and the Mayor’s tombola stall raised £559.35. Along with a further donation of £140 from Ian Taylor, the total raised for the Mayor’s charities was an amazing £699.35.

Special thanks go out to all of the businesses and individuals that donated prizes for the stall and to my excellent sales team and support staff that made it all possible. Thanks also go out to all of you that took part and helped to raise funds for my charities.

Do you remember arriving home after school clambering out of your school uniform and into your playing clothes, careering out of the house, running around like a lunatic until mum called you in for food or it became too dark to play out?

As young children, our playtime activities were considerable physical experiences, running, skipping, climbing, lifting, pushing and pulling; the sheer joy of playing with friends was sufficient to make us exercise almost to exhaustion and to end our day in a deep, regenerating sleep.

It would be wonderful to live our lives throughout, in the safe, secure environment that most of us enjoyed as young children. Unfortunately, as we get older, many everyday challenges cause us to feel anxious and stressful; everyone lives with stress to some degree, as it is a normal part of everyday life.

Your body responds to stress automatically, by increasing blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and blood flow to your muscles; indeed, your body metabolism speeds up.

This is the “fight or flight� response, preparing you to react effectively to a threatening situation, and it is quite normal.

Short term (acute) stress is normal and manageable, but problems occur when you are constantly reacting to stressful situations without making adjustments to counter the effects; you could begin to feel levels of stress which can threaten your health and well-being.

Physical activity reduces stress, and aids restful sleep, so try to remember what you enjoyed doing most as a child running, climbing, skipping, rowing and cycling. Could it be that you simply enjoyed playing with your friends, blissfully unaware that you were expending energy, working your body, dissipating stress, creating a feeling of well-being and staying healthy?

South Africa – Stunning Scenery and Wildlife, Adventure and Extreme Sports South Africa is renowned for its amazing wildlife and legendary safari opportunities. However, there is so much more to see, in terms of stunning scenery and epic adventures.

Straddling South Africa and Lesotho, the Maloti-Drakensberg Transfrontier Park is the perfect place to spot wildlife, such as eland, blesbok and oribi, across the high slopes and the open plains. Deepings Raft Race The Deepings Raft Race presented donations totalling £6000 to their two chosen charities for 2016 on November 21st at The Deepings Community Centre.

The nominated charities were: • MECP2 Duplication UK • The Deepings Community Trust.

A small donation is also being made to the “Roof Repair Fund” at The Priory Church, Deeping St James; The Air Cadets and Deepings Rugby Club who provided invaluable help on race day.

The Chairman of Deeping St James Parish Council, Steve Gilbert, was in attendance along with teacher Paul Forman and children from the Linchfield School who won the Raft Race banner competition. Accepting the donation on behalf of the Deepings Community Centre was Sue Harris and her

colleagues. Representing the MECP2 charity was Treasurer Tony Kelly, with his family and grandson, Brody.

Tony Kelly (MECP2) said: “We were over the moon to be part of the Raft Race and our family thoroughly enjoyed the day.

The money will go a long way to help Brody and his MECP2 friends to enjoy their respite care in a holiday caravan on the coast.”

Sue Harris said: “The team at the Deepings Community Centre are pleased to have become partners with the Deepings Raft Race, helping to create a strong community spirit in the Deepings and showcase the facilities available.”

Kevin Barber, Chairman of the Raft Race Committee, thanked everyone for attending and also thanked all the sponsors, businesses and community groups without whom the event

Next year’s race will be on Sunday August 6th, 2017 and the theme will be ‘The Great British Raft Off’, celebrating everything good about Britain over the years. Rotarians help Deepings Health Centre with new Spirometer Spirometry is a simple test used to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breathe out in one forced breath. It is carried out using a device called a Spirometer, which is a small machine attached by a cable to a mouthpiece. Spirometry can be performed by a nurse or doctor at your GP surgery, and the results are fed through the system fo immediate action.

Spirometry can be used to help diagnose a lung condition if you have symptoms of a problem, or your doctor feels you’re at an increased risk of developing a particular lung condition. It may be recommended if you have a persistent cough or breathlessness, or if you’re over 35 and smoke.

Heat the oil in a large casserole dish. Tip the lamb in and cook for 5 minutes or until any liquid has disappeared, then add the onion, carrots and leeks. Cook for another 5 minutes, stirring often, until the vegetables are beginning to soften.

• Pour over your chosen stock, add the rosemary, cover with a lid and cook over a low heat for 1 hour.

• Stir in the cannellini beans and cook for another 30 minutes, topping up with water if necessary, until the lamb is tender and cooked through.

• Serve with some crusty bread or boiled potatoes, (or both!) if you like.

Have a Happy and Healthy New Year – Ten Steps to a Healthy Diet

Consume a variety of foods

This helps ensure that you get all of the disease-fighting potential that foods offer and it will limit your exposure to any toxic substances that may be present in a particular food.

Keep an eye on portions

When reading food labels, check serving sizes: some relatively small packages claim to contain more than one serving, so you have to double or triple the calories, grams of fat and milligrams of sodium if you’re planning to eat the whole thing.

Eat plenty of produce

Remember, “Five portions of fruit and vegetables a day”. The nutrients, fibre and other compounds in these foods may help protect against certain types of cancer and other diseases.

Choose whole fruits over juice for more fibre.

Get more whole grains

At least half your grains should be whole grains, such as whole wheat, barley and oats.

Whole grains retain the bran and germ and thus all (or nearly all) of the nutrients and fibre of the grain.

Limit refined grains and added sugar

The refined carbohydrates in white bread, regular pasta and most snack foods have little or no dietary fibre. Also, limit foods with added sugar, which are sources of empty calories that contribute to weight gain.

Nuts, fatty fish, avocados and vegetable oils supply healthy unsaturated fats. Recent research suggests these foods, though high in calories, tend not to promote weight gain. Fatty fish helps reduce heart disease risks and has other benefits, largely because of its omega-3 polyunsaturated fats.

Cut down on animal fat

Saturated fats, especially from red meat and processed meat, boost LDL (lowdensity lipoprotein or “bad”) cholesterol. To limit your intake, choose lean meats, skinless poultry and non-fat or low-fat dairy products. Replace saturated fats with “good” fats, found in nuts, fish and vegetable oils.

Shun trans fats

Trans fats are supplied by partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, used in many processed foods and fast foods. Trans fats raise LDL cholesterol and also reduce HDL (high-density lipoprotein or “good”) cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease.

Don’t worry about cholesterol

Cholesterol in food has little, if any, effect on blood cholesterol in most people and so, many experts no longer recommend limiting dietary cholesterol (found only in animal foods, notably eggs). The best way for most people to lower their blood cholesterol is to reduce saturated fats and trans fats.

Keep sodium down and potassium up

Excess sodium raises blood pressure in many people. At the same time, potassium can lower blood pressure. Potassium-rich foods include citrus fruits, bananas, potatoes, beans and yogurt.

The Mini Gs

– Linchfield’s Amazing School Choir!

It was a cold, dark, afternoon in late November when I visited Linchfield Primary School in Deeping St James, but my spirits were lifted when I met Amy and Katie, two delightful year six pupils who have been members of the very successful school choir, The Mini Gs, since they were in year three. Their enthusiasm for the choir was almost tangible and I think they smiled all the way through the interview! They certainly brightened my day.

Richard Gombault, a year five teacher, has been running the choir for the past two years and in that short space of time has seen them go from strength to strength: the choir now has forty-four members, mainly girls, and practises once a week. Richard played in a band called “Midget” who were very succesful in Japan. He is a music specialist and has an obvious passion for playing music and singing: the school has also had very talented rock bands in the past (Amy and Katie showed me videos of them playing and I was very impressed).

The major highlights for the choir must be their auditions for “Britain’s Got Talent”, where they sang “Fix You” by Coldplay; their performance at the Lincolnshire Schools Prom in July which was held at Skegness; and the entry into the School Choir of the Year Competition, where they made it through to the regional heats. Amy said that she would love to go to the Choir of the Year Competition again, whilst Katie’s wish was to take part in the Lincolnshire School Proms.

In the auditions for “Britain’s Got Talent”, The Mini Gs, after a five hour wait, made it through to the second round.

According to Richard, “It was an amazing incredible moment, very emotional. The parents and children were all jumping about with joy. ” Unfortunately, they did not make it through to the third round, but the judges commented that they were “… very good and we loved the solos.”

The Lincolnshire Proms were held in Skegness and, to be part of the event, the choir had to submit a recording of them singing. Only five primary schools were chosen, and the concert was a mixture of all styles of music from funk to renaissance, and from duets to massed bands. What an experience for young children and, as Mr Gombault said, “It was good for the children to see the progression from the primary through to sixth form.” The choir not only sang but they participated in a large group song medley with a dance routine; the girls said that it “felt like a proper TV programme.”

One other thing that they are proud of is the professionally recorded CD , with the tracks “Fix You” and “Only You”.

The quality of recording is very good and the songs are beautifully sung and arranged. I particularly enjoyed “Only 18

You”, with some lovely harmonies and confident singing.

I asked the girls why they liked singing and I think they have hit the nail on the head – “It makes us smile – when you are sad or have had a miserable day it makes you happy.” They enjoy singing in care homes “to make people happy”, and are looking forward to aiming for another performance at the Lincolnshire Proms. Their latest achievement was in the Tulip Radio’s Lincolnshire Schools Christmas Choirs Competition where they finished in second place where they sang a beautiful arrangement of “Walking in the Air”, from the animated film, “The Snowman”.

Finally, the last word goes to Richard Gombault: - “It is a privilege to be involved with children who are committed and so enthusiastic. I am so proud of their achievements and in such a short space of time.”

anuary is a time when you can relax and spend little time at the allotment, if you have put it “to bed” for the winter. Most of my allotment has been dug over, manured and covered for the winter months, with the exception of the overwintering onions, garlic and peas. So now it is time to take stock, order new seeds and decide what grew well, what new crops you might like to try, and your planting programme for 2017. You can work on a three or five year crop rotation: crop rotation prevents the soil from becoming exhausted from growing the same crop, continually taking the same nutrients out of the soil. It also reduces the risk of pests and diseases becoming established and then finding them very difficult to eradicate.

The three year crop rotation involves the following: Year 1: Peas, beans and fruiting vegetables: peas and beans absorb nitrogen from the air and store it in the roots – leaving the roots in after harvesting benefits next year’s crop.

Year 2: Brassicas – are nitrogen-hungry, grow them where last year’s peas and beans grew. They are also susceptible to club root (a soil-borne fungus), so moving them around helps keep this at bay.

Year 3: Roots, tubers, onions and leaves: these crops do not have a particular “thirst” for nitrogen so it is good to

grow them after brassicas, where the nitrogen content has been depleted.

And, if you have a very large plot, why not try a five year rotation?

Year 1: brassicas Year 2: peas and beans Year 3: potatoes and fruiting veg.

Year 4: the onion family Year 5: root and stem vegetables The compost heap is pretty dormant at the moment, so last year I dug a bean trench for my organic kitchen waste and I had an amazing crop of healthy runner beans. Even though they were neglected whilst I was away, moisture must have been retained for them to thrive, thanks to the trench. Dig a 30cm trench, line it with newspaper, throw in the kitchen waste and, after each layer, cover with a little soil until the trench is full.

At this time of year, rhubarb can be forced, using pots or an upturned bucket, making sure any holes are covered to completely cut out the light. What could be tastier than pale pink sticks of rhubarb harvested in late February?

Towards the end of the month, seed potatoes should be available and you can start chitting them in seed trays ready for planting. Other jobs that can be carried out are: pruning apple and pear trees but not stone fruits such as cherry and damson, they should be summer pruned; plant bare rooted trees and bushes; support Brussels sprouts and sprouting broccoli; protect plants form cold and check stakes and ties.

Lasting Power of Attorney:

Planning for the unexpected Many of us refuse to accept that we might lose our mental capacity and so don’t think about how we would manage our financial affairs if we did become mentally incapable. However, statistics show that there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, of whom 40,000 are under the age of sixty-five. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, this situation is getting worse. It is therefore important to plan ahead and ease the potential burden on your relatives.

One answer is to create a lasting power of attorney (LPA), which gives someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf about your financial affairs if you become mentally incapable of making your own decisions.

A health and welfare LPA only applies if you become mentally incapacitated and allows your chosen attorney to make decisions about your care, including where you live, what medical treatment you receive, whether you should be resuscitated etc.

The LPA is a powerful legal document. You may wish to get a solicitor to help if you’re unsure about the process.

It is very important that you set up an LPA while you are still mentally capable, well before you need it. If you become mentally incapacitated later in life and don’t have an LPA in place, your relatives can face long, distressing delays and expense in applying to the court to take control. Don’t assume that because you have set up an LPA, you have lost control. Your LPA would only be activated if and when it is needed.

There are two types of LPA. A property and financial affairs LPA is used to appoint someone you trust as your attorney to take decisions on your behalf about money matters. They would be empowered, for example, to make decisions on buying and selling your property, running your bank accounts,

Edinburgh Fringe – Highlight of any Year As we shiver our way into the new year and those balmy summer days are a distant memory, it’s always heartening to think that, come August, (Friday 4th –Monday 28th this year), there will be another chance to laugh and groan, in equal measure, at the hundreds of one-liners on offer to the masses in the pubs, clubs and theatres of this magnificent city.

Last year, Masai Graham won the award for the funniest joke at the fringe with the gag: “My dad suggested I register for a donor card; he’s a man after my own heart.” The festival’s best jokes are selected by a panel of ten judges before being put to two thousand people, who vote for their favourite. Comedian Stuart Mitchell came second in the 2016 poll, with this astute observation: “Why is it old people say, ‘there’s no place like home’, yet when you put them in one...”

Is Your Windows 10 File System Corrupted?

As an engineer providing support to home users and small businesses in the area, I have seen a very high number of systems with Windows 10 file system corruption. This even stretches to a few systems that were straight out of the box, brand new!

In many cases, users may be blissfully unaware that they have a fundamental problem. Often systems will continue to run, but response will be sluggish or resulting issues intermittent. A common symptom is an intermittent issue with the software that controls Internet access, resulting in the occasional loss of Internet connection or dropping off the wireless network.

Even if you are not experiencing these issues, I would still recommend that you test your Windows filesystem integrity by using the method detailed below.

How do I test my Windows 10?

• Right click (ie; click the right mouse button) on the Start button at the bottom left of the screen.

A black window will now open up that looks like an old basic IBM DOS system (for those that remember those).

• Type the following into this box sfc /scannow then press Enter on the keyboard The system will now carry out a scan of the main Windows 10 file system, the very structure of the program code.

Of course, if you are having intermittent issues with your system, this may be bad news as it means that you have something else going on.

This is good in many ways. It confirms that there was corruption but that Windows has been able to identify and repair the damage. If you have been having issues this may well have addressed them.

You don’t want this result! If you see this one, you are almost certainly going to need to do a Windows 10 refresh (a fresh install of Windows 10) to correct the problem. If you are not familiar with how to do this, search online, find a friend/relative who is, or contact someone like myself at LITES PC for assistance.

| Consumer Advice Be “Sale-savvy” when Searching for a January Bargain Online As a nation of bargain hunters, we love nothing more than the satisfaction of snapping up a juicy January deal – from cut price clothing to low cost luxuries.

But while many of us rejoice in a post-Christmas spending spree, so do the online fraudsters and fake traders.

A country-wide campaign run by Action Fraud has been warning people of the dangers of online shopping fraud throughout the festive period, as well as all types of fraud which people fall victim to during the season of spending.

New figures released in December show that last year, victims reported losing over £10 million to fraudsters when shopping online for Christmas presents. The largest loss was one victim who lost £86,000 when he tried to purchase a boat from a fraudster on Ebay.

The advice is also very relevant to the January sales, and here are some tips on how to avoid getting caught out by the New Year misery makers.

One of the worst offenders are the counterfeiters.

Counterfeit goods range from clothes, bags, watches, perfume, cosmetics and electrical items as well as pirate DVDs, CDs, computer software and games.

However, more and more 12:13 people are now prepared to knowingly buy fake items as gifts, but there are serious risks involved with counterfeit goods.

Fake goods are often of poor quality and, in many cases, unsafe. Counterfeit electrical goods are not put through the same vigorous safety checks and fake cosmetics and fragrances have been found to contain toxic levels of chemicals and unpleasant substances.

Our advice, as well as that of the police and Action Fraud, is don’t rush into spending your cash on what looks as if it is a great offer.

Take a few minutes to check and research what you are buying and where/who you are buying it from. If the deal looks too good to be true, the chances are it probably is!

And be vigilant when it comes to snapping up offers and deals which appear on your social media channels - as research shows that these are popular and preferred platforms for the fraudsters to target victims.

Horses, Cars and Narrow Roads My wife, my children, and I often walk or ride our horses on the country roads close to where we live. These single track roads make it difficult for vehicles to pass. Most drivers are very careful, slowing down to almost walking pace and passing as widely as possible. There are a few drivers, maybe rushing about and lost in thought, who forget to slow down but who slow down immediately, when signalled to do so. However, there are three or four people who feel they should barely slow down at all, and pass closely and at high speed. This is not only extremely dangerous for us and our horses, but also for themselves. Horses are instinctive creatures and will react to anything that startles them, often shying and springing sideways into the road.

horse owners need to make as much room for them to pass slowly. They also need to make themselves and their horses as visible as possible, even in the day time.

There is a large and growing number of accidents involving horses and vehicles on our roads. Last year saw over thirty rider fatalities and over a hundred horse deaths, most of them avoidable, had people driven more carefully and respectfully.

All that is needed is for everybody to be respectful of each other. Horse riders are not trying to block the roads. They just need people to pass safely, both for their own sakes and for the drivers’.

Horse owners have responsibilities too. They need to train their horses to be well-handled and tolerant of traffic.

However, there is always a transition time with young horses when they have been well trained to be handled, but just lack the experience. When vehicles have slowed down,

There are many references in the Highway Code on how to pass horses on our roads, but they are only advisory.

However, if anybody driving on our roads exceeds that which would be expected from a competent and careful driver, then they become liable to prosecutions for careless or dangerous driving. There is a recommendation from the British Horse Society to pass horses no closer than two metres and no faster than 15 mph, which they are trying to bring into law.

It is unfortunate that a recent survey carried out by the AA showed that 18 % of drivers feel that horses should not be allowed on roads at all. So what about people walking (with or without dogs), cyclists and even motorbikes?

This survey would make for an interesting discussion!

| A little bit of History

Market Deeping distillery There was once a distillery in Market Deeping, established by local doctors William Holland and William Page in the early years of the 19th century to produce essential oils from herbs and other plants for the manufacture of medicines, ointments, lotions and linaments to treat the variety of ailments and physical conditions that afflicted Victorian society.

Patent remedies were widely available as a universal panacea and the reaction of most people when feeling unwell was to buy a bottle of something which they thought would improve their condition. Their venture began in a small way with one copper urn out in the open air and later from a small shed with a thatched roof before a permanent distillery was built in 1836 and 400 acres of land rented from the church.

The company was soon in useful production with the cultivation of a variety of herbs such as thyme, caraway, mint, hemlock and rosemary, belladonna, henbane, clover and poppy while the fields of lavender when in bloom were reckoned to be particularly beautiful. Dandelion roots were brought in by villagers for planting during the winter months and the company even imported liquorice plants to add to their remedies.

Many men and women worked there and children were employed during the school holidays to help with the planting and picking of herbs. The essential oils they produced were sold throughout England and abroad, winning medals at many international exhibitions in London, Paris and Berlin, while the quality of the products was endorsed by the leading apothecaries of the day on account of their excellent quality.

One particular favourite was peppermint water, recommended for colds and stomach ailments when taken hot, a popular purchase for visiting relatives who invariably took a bottle with them when they returned home although samples were also given away free to villagers when supplies became abundant.

The cultivation of herbs continued as a flourishing industry and even spawned a similar business in the United States but eventually ceased production and in 1906 the distillery estate was put up for sale but sold in lots to various buyers.

The actual building remained and although there were attempts to preserve it as being of historic interest, it was finally demolished in 2006 and the land developed for new housing although the venture is remembered in various streets in the vicinity which are named after herbs and plants such as Rosemary Avenue and Clover Road while one has even been called Still Close.

Sergeant Mosley’s Musings: Theft – (What’s that all about then?)

There are many offences that fall under the Theft Act 1968, from burglary to abstracting electricity, but all of them contain an element of theft. I intend to explain various types of theft over the coming months but, in order to do so, I first need to consider the basic offence itself. Theft in this instance could be shoplifting, stealing a cycle or borrowing a DVD and later selling it.

Section 1 of the Theft Act 1968 provides the legal definition of theft as: 1(1) A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another, with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.

The maximum penalty on conviction is seven years imprisonment and/or a fine. However, lower value thefts can be dealt with by way of issuing a fixed penalty ticket, when certain conditions apply.

There are five elements to prove the offence.

Dishonestly is not defined under the act but is taken in its literal meaning as ‘not honest, trustworthy or sincere’ (Oxford Dictionary).

Any assumption by a person of the rights of an owner amounts to an appropriation. This includes where they have come by the property without stealing it in the first place, and later assumes the right to it by

keeping or dealing with it as the owner.

Property includes money and all other property, real or personal, including things in action (such as copyrights) and other intangible property.

Belonging to another refers to any property belonging to any person who possesses it or has control of it, whether that person is an individual, a group or business.

If his intention is to treat the property as his own, to use or dispose of regardless of the other’s rights, then the final element of the offence, the intention of permanently depriving the other of it, is made out.

A simple example would be where someone sees a cycle leaning against a shop front. They know it doesn’t belong to them and they have no right to take it, but they pick it up and cycle off with it. They then see a mate down the road and sell it to them for £20. In this case, they commit the full offence of theft.
