Welcome to your February issue...

A

nd so, here we go with issue #150 and a huge thank you right away to everyone now, and in the past, who have made it such a successful and immensely enjoyable ‘decade and a bit’ for the ‘Discovering’ team. Here’s to the next 150!

Being a leap year makes 2024 particularly significant, especially if you’re that lady wondering if “he” will ever get round to the customary getting on to his bended knee and slipping that engagement ring on to your finger! Ladies, remember that you can beat him to it on February 29th this year … fellas, watch out! Valentine’s Day is featured in this “love-laden” issue. May the happiness resulting from sharing those flowers, perfume, chocolates and so much more (hint, hint, Chris!) with a loved one remain, even when things might get a bit tricky in the future … especially when the snow, and even more heavy rain, comes along to spoil our fun!

Claire x

It was almost a case of “February fill dyke” recently. The trouble was the deluge we witnessed in early January came a month too soon. The dykes were certainly filled … and plenty more, as the unfortunate homeowners in parts of our region will testify, as they battled to prevent the flood waters ruining their new year. Our commiserations in particular go to one of our regular contributors, Waterside Garden Centre near Baston. Their appearance on national television was small consolation for their having suffered disastrous flood damage. And now, just when you thought you’d had your fill of Christmas cracker “crackers”, think again … ● Those wind turbines love loud music – they’re heavy metal fans. ● Never trust a flight of stairs – they’re always up to something. ● My dad used to go round on stilts – as a kid, I really

looked up to him. Have a fun-filled February and enjoy the read!

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World BY BETTANY HUGHES

The Great Pyramid at Giza. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Temple of Artemis. The statue of Zeus at Olympia. The mausoleum of Halikarnassus. The Colossus at Rhodes. The Lighthouse of Alexandria. The Seven Wonders of the World were staggeringly audacious impositions on our planet. The scale and majesty of them still enthrals us today. Bestselling historian, Bettany Hughes explores traces of the Wonders themselves, and the traces they have left in history. A magisterial work of historical storytelling, reinforcing the exciting and nourishing notion that humans can make the impossible happen.

And The Winners Are …

Our Christmas Novelty Hunt proved a tremendous success with scores of eager youngsters (and many not-so-young!) peering into the town’s shop windows in search of the hidden novelties.

Ruby And Zachary Our first prize of £50 went to Ruby (5) who attends Bourne Abbey Primary Academy, which she loves! Her hobbies include swimming, dancing with LDC, playing with her dolls and colouring. Ruby plans to share her winnings with her brother Zachary and spend her half on chocolate and more dolls. Zachary (11) is also at Bourne Abbey and due to start at Bourne Academy in September. He plays football for Thurlby Tigers, loves Maths at school and playing on his Xbox (particularly ‘Fortnite’) and must count himself really lucky to have such a generous sister, described by a colleague as “such a beautiful little girl with exceptional manners!”

Oliver

Rhys and Will

Congratulations go to Oliver, aged 8, who is in Year 3 at Bourne Westfield Academy who is shown proudly clutching his winnings. Oliver won £10 as the third-place runner up and has been described by a Discovering Magazines colleague as “a very sensible young man who is going to put his winnings in his piggy bank and save up!” Not many of us have socks matching the colour of our front door – great style Oliver!!

Another wonderfully generous young person is Rhys Davies (9) who intends to share his £25 second prize with his brother, Will (11). Both attend Bourne Westfield Academy, with Will looking forward to starting at Bourne Grammar School in September. Both enjoy rugby, swimming, karate, Nintendo, and Lego. Rhys loves being a Cub whilst Will enjoys his time with the Scouts. Rhys intends to buy more Lego, which ‘big bro’ will no doubt share, alongside him saving his own half of the winnings.

Health

Hypnosis for Procrastination Putting off until tomorrow what you could do today - is this familiar?

L

ife today is full of distractions: phone alerts, email, social media, 24hr shopping or entertainment and it’s everywhere. It’s a bit like a rabbit hole waiting for you to go down, to spend large chunks of your day or waste your day away.

People who procrastinate tend to choose short-term gratification over long-term, more worthwhile goals. They do this regardless of whether or not the delay has serious health, academic or financial implications. Chronic procrastination is not a mental health diagnosis, but is related to: ● increased stress/anxiety ● poor grades in school ● poor health ● addictions ● poor performance at work ● failing to reach important goals. University and college students procrastinate up to 46%, and report they procrastinate on specific academic tasks, and about 10% to 20% of adults in the general population are chronic procrastinators.

“Procrastination and selfcontrol are closely related.” Procrastination has often been attributed to poor time management, but chronic procrastination is due to poor self-regulation. The prospect of enduring a tax return, exam, the housework, or odd jobs just doesn’t have the same immediate appeal as shopping, indulging in an addiction, social media, slumped in a chair or caffeine.

“Tug of war between your present and future selves” Procrastinators are engaging in a constant tug of war between your emotionally driven pleasureseeking current self, who would rather watch TV than, say, go to bed, and the rational reasoning future self who ends up being tired the next day due to lack of good quality sleep the night before. So, you are letting your future self down. There’s a difficulty in bridging the gap between the present and future self which is one factor that may contribute to the mood and behaviour regulation failure that drive us to procrastination.

Overcoming Distraction with Hypnotherapy Hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for overcoming procrastination. It empowers you to gain access to the deeper subconscious part of the mind, speaking to it directly. Hypnosis allows you to nourish the subconscious with new information, removing those negative thinking patterns that are holding you back. Helping you to train your mind to get into the zone, focusing on the task at hand, and allowing your mind to be quiet, getting things done. Hypnotherapy also helps to improve general lifestyle and make changes to improve sleep, healthy eating and stress which are all energy stealers. Once you increase energy, your motivation increases too, allowing you to just get on with things effortlessly.

“Don’t let your future self down!”

WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

omance may abound all year but with an emphasis in February. We all love flowers, especially roses, but what can sometimes be overlooked are those everyday things which we need, in order to prosper with our loved ones. The law applies to romance in many more ways than you might think. ● Ensuring that your will is up to date can be fundamental to enjoying a protected, safe life. In a case where there are unmarried couples, they particularly have reason to make wills due to the rules of intestacy not protecting their partner.

● Many people do not ensure that they have nominated their partner in their pension or life insurance and these benefits can pass outside a will. ● In a property purchase, creating a Deed of Beneficial Interest can protect the parties, if they

fall out, and the so called “Bank of Mum and Dad” where they have lent funds to their offspring. ● Pre-nuptial agreements can be an attempt at trying to protect the parties if there happens to be a breakdown of the marriage. ● Using the benefits of the Inheritance Tax allowances can be a loving gesture. Knowing and using them correctly to include the “spouse exemption” can really assist. ● Tying down property matters and especially on a purchase is important for all couples. Double and Megson at Bourne can assist with advice on these matters and other subjects close to our loved ones’ needs, such as employment issues. ‘Family Life’ is at the heart (no pun intended!) of what we advise on. We wish you all a very Happy Valentine’s Day.

Time to Make Bold and Life-affirming Decisions

Advice from NICK ASH, Managing Director W&P Legal

Sitting at my desk writing this months’ article coincides with “Blue Monday” which is supposedly the most depressing day of the year.

T

his is calculated using several factors that include the weather, the amount of time since Christmas, your levels of debt, and the time since you broke your New Year’s resolutions (apparently, the most likely day to do that is January 11th!)

“Blue Monday” is of course completely made up and was first coined in 2005 as part of a press release from a travel company. The press release was attributed to Cliff Arnall who was at the time a tutor at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Cardiff University. Speaking about the day, Cliff told the ‘Independent’ newspaper in 2018 that it “was never his intention to make the day sound negative, rather to inspire people to take action and make bold life decisions.” So, in the spirit of Cliff (which we fully endorse and embrace), we at W & P Legal have taken up his clarion call and we are encouraging all our staff and clients to make bold and life-affirming decisions.

One of the most life-affirming decisions you can make is not to book a holiday (sorry Cliff, that’s just a short-term fix!) but rather, to get your affairs in order. It might be counter-intuitive, but making a will, sorting out your ‘estate planning’ and protecting your family are all hugely life-affirming. We know this because our clients tell us this almost every day. For most people, the process takes less than an hour and involves a friendly chat with one of our qualified advisors. This is followed up by some draft documents to review and a final signing appointment where we put your plans into being. Now is the time to be bold, make that call – 01778 252301 and finally get your will and ‘estate plan’ in place. P.S. The real “Blue Monday” is, of course, a song by New Order released in March 1983 – it’s a true classic of the synth pop genre, the biggest selling 12” single of all time. If you have your copy in the original, limitededition, die-cut 5¼ inch floppy disc sleeve, then you might want to pop that in your will as it is getting more valuable by the day!

The Vision for Family Justice

T

his is the grand title of the Family Law Solicitors’ national group, Resolution’s blueprint for a future family justice system.

Resolution have been in existence for forty years and one of the highlights of their achievements in reforming the family justice system, was the introduction of no-fault divorce in 2022. But there is so much more that needs drastic change. The family justice system in England and Wales is at a crucial turning point. Family lawyers are supporting families with a diverse range of needs but are seriously hampered by massively overstretched family courts and long delays, poor access to the justice system and legal advice and information, and old fashioned laws that do not reflect modern society, leaving many with little or no legal protection. Cohabitation reform is central to Resolution’s “Vision” and there is an extensive campaign underway for cohabitees to have at least basic rights on relationship breakdown or the death of their partner. Any couples who are separating now must deal with the present inadequacies in our legal system. You can maximise your chance of making the best of what is often a bad situation, by consulting expert legal advice as soon as possible.

and Nagasaki Survivor

L by Brynley Heaven

oved, respected, and feared. Known as ‘The Major’. The phenomenal energy of Brett Collier is still remembered. Our picture shows him “engaging” with an illegally padlocked public path in Kirkby Underwood, having pestered Highways for twenty months without getting a suitable response. For a man who literally survived the Atomic Bomb, perhaps every day seemed like a bonus? It was 11.02am on August 9th, 1945. Brett Collier was working in an undersea drift mine off Nagasaki, where he had been shipped as a ‘prisoner of war’. He had been captured in Singapore in 1942, faced a death sentence, before being sold on to a mining company in Japan. Everyone was trapped when the mine entrance was destroyed by what they thought was an earthquake. It took them sixteen hours to dig themselves out. They emerged aghast and disbelieving at the sight of the sea boiling and indescribable devastation. This was no earthquake, of course, but the A-bomb with its radioactive legacy. The sun did not reappear for days. Brett supported comrades mentally scarred or physically sickened throughout his life. He referred to his “Far Eastern Odyssey”, when he referred to it at all.

grave at the time. As an even more graphic account of the A-bomb aftermath, if that is possible, it was eventually published as his memoir: ‘A Doctor’s War’ by Aidan MacCarthy (2006) Highly recommended, but absolutely blood-chilling with a jaw-dropping non-conforming first-hand account of Dunkirk too.

Kate Ashbrook of the Open Spaces Society paid this tribute: “For years, Lincolnshire was bandit country for walkers with countless illegally blocked paths. Brett was prepared to stand up to the most irate farmer and the most intransigent local authority official or councillor. Procrastination didn’t wash with Brett. With his meticulous filingsystem he could dig out a case years later and send a sharp reminder to whoever should be acting”

We’ve lost a lot of paths in South Lincolnshire, including some valuable ones. Nowadays, it’s easy to compare old Ordnance Survey maps with new ones to verify this point. In the back half of the twentieth century, many a rural employee, mindful of their job precarity (to put it tactfully) gave false or misleading testimony at the behest of employers that the paths were no longer used. Our other bugbear is the paths with odd gaps, or which expire at the parish boundary. They are never rectified, and this is quite deliberate.

If you doubt that anyone could really have survived Nagasaki, I was once bought a pint by Aidan MacCarthy who had an (entirely unconnected) underground survival story of the same fateful day and place. He was being forced to dig his communal

For his eightieth birthday in 2000, Brett Collier had Army Cadets plant eighty oak trees in Lincolnshire for a new woodland. I like to think that, whenever a Parish Council is struggling with a missing path, ‘The Major’ is looking on, offering quiet encouragement!

LDC Present a Magical Matilda for all Theatre ‘Dahlings’!

ollowing the success with their first musical, “Annie”, LDC decided to kick off 2024 with their production of “Matilda JR”. There was not only one, but two Matildas who showcased their talent at The Stamford Corn Exchange on January 5th and 6th, and what a fabulous show it was! The cast of thirty-two, who attend LDC’s Musical Theatre classes in Bourne every Wednesday, from the ages of five to eighteen, worked so hard to make it an extraordinary show. Theatre critic, Claire Saberton, was absolutely overwhelmed by the quality of the production when she attended the Sunday matinee. “I thought LDC’s last production, ‘Annie’ was superb, but this went even further, with so much enthusiasm from the cast and topnotch choreography from Lauren and the team,” she commented.

If you missed “Matilda JR”, don’t worry … LDC are currently working on their next show, “Cursed”, which will run at the Key Theatre in Peterborough on May 25th and 26th. 24

Your Garden

L

et’s hope that your allotment or vegetable patch has had time to dry out so that you can prepare the beds ready for sowing in March.

Warming up the beds will pay dividends by using cloches, straw-based mulches, or plastic sheeting. If you have clay soil, spread a mix of organic matter and grit over the surface and dig it in to open the structure; avoid treading on the soil especially when wet, by laying wooden planks to walk on, or even consider creating raised beds. Make sure that you have got all your seed potatoes by the end of the month and that they are spread out in a seed tray, or in egg boxes, in a light, cool room where they can “chit” (sprout shoots) before being planted out. If the “chits” look pale and spindly, the room is probably too warm or too dark. One vegetable that will be more flavoursome if kept in the dark is forced rhubarb. Once you see the crowns starting to develop, choose a well-established crown, remove any debris or leaves, add a layer of mulch, and then cover with a bucket or large pot without any holes (cover any holes with black tape.) You can increase the heat by mounding compost or manure around the pot. It should be ready to harvest in 7-8 weeks when the stems are 45-50cms long. Other jobs for February include: • Make sure winter cabbages, cauliflowers and broccoli are netted against hungry pigeons, whose food supply is a little short at this time of year.

4

D I S C O V E R I N G March

• Prune autumn raspberry canes by cutting right down to the ground and then mulch. • Feed and mulch fruit trees and bushes. • If you know where you are planting your brassicas, check the pH and, if needs be, add some lime to bring it up to 6.5 or 7. Also add some extra manure to the potato patch. • The compost heap might benefit from a bit of attention. Rake it through with a fork to aerate it, add water if it seems dry and then re-cover it to keep it warm. • It really is the last time you can winter prune fruit trees as they should still be dormant; any later and if it is mild, they will be starting to move into growth. As they are still dormant, bare-rooted fruit trees can still be planted. • Sow seeds indoors: tomatoes, leeks, lettuce, Brussels, sprouting broccoli, spinach. The main problem at this time of year is a general lack of light, so a cheap solution to prevent leggy, drawn seedlings is to cover a piece of cardboard with aluminium foil and place it to the north side of the seed tray, thus reflecting extra light onto the seeds. • If the weather allows, you can start a composting trench for your runner beans, courgettes or pumpkins. Mark out the area you will be planting and then dig a trench 60cm deep which you can then start to add layers of organic kitchen waste, covering each layer with soil.

Happy digging!

They are highly resistant to rust, oil, corrosion, salt, and cracking, and are also the safest option, being resistant to abrasion, slipping, indentation and ignition. The business owner explains how important it is to have a sound foundation, upon which the resin is to be applied. He recommends

Property News

New Door for 2024?

W

ith the Christmas period over and a new year well underway, focus has returned to the property market, for those considering moving. With many new buyers registering their requirements and a flurry of new properties coming to the market, Christmas can no longer be used as an excuse for a lack of interest. Despite Christmas, Newton Fallowell had an extremely busy and successful December, which then carried on throughout January. Many properties were sold, including a few within days of advertising, and a couple that required no advertising at all! We found that buyers were in fact registering their details prior to the new year, to ensure they were the first to hear about any new properties due to come to the market. Whilst the new year presents the benefit of many new buyers, it also presents a much higher level of competition on the market. Therefore, it is imperative to ensure that your home stands out, or you could risk becoming ‘stale’ on the market. Buyers, new and old, will maintain the ability to see the date your home was launched to the market. If your home had already been on the market for a period in 2023, they may begin to ask the question, “Why has this home not already sold?”

Here at Newton Fallowell, we believe it is important to review a home’s marketing and interest regularly, to ensure it does not become ‘stale’. We recommend that, if your home has not been receiving a good level of interest, you understand why this is and what your selling agent is doing to increase activity. Are they being pro-active and crossselling from similar homes they have available? What are the reasons potential purchasers are providing for not viewing your home?

BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

2023

ESTATE AGENT IN BOURNE

If you cannot answer the above questions, perhaps a change in selling agent could be worthwhile. With a combination of a new set of photos/marketing details, as well as a pro-active agent who will provide you with answers to the above questions, you will benefit from one of the most important periods of the year for the property market. If you believe your home needs a fresh lease of life, then please do not hesitate to contact us on 01778 422567, so that we can provide this for you and help get you moving … to a new door in ’24!

But why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day in the first place, because it hasn’t always been a celebration of love?

Who was St Valentine?

However …

At least two men named Valentine could have inspired the tradition. One Valentine was a priest in third century Rome who defied Emperor Claudius II’s ban on marriage (he thought it distracted young soldiers), illegally marrying couples in the spirit of love until he was caught and sentenced to death. Another legend suggests that Valentine was killed for attempting to help Christians escape prison in Rome, and that he was the first sender of a “Valentine” message himself while imprisoned, writing a letter signed “From your Valentine.”

Although some historians believe that Valentine’s Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14th, others believe that the holiday has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival called “Lupercalia,” which was celebrated in ancient Rome. Dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Roman founders Romulus and Remus, the day was celebrated by sacrificing animals and smacking women with animal hides, a practice that was believed to encourage fertility!

ne’s Day All About Then? In the 1300s, it officially became a holiday associated with love At the end of the 5th century, Roman Pope Gelasius officially declared the date of February 14 “St. Valentine’s Day.” It wasn’t until the Middle Ages, though, that the holiday became associated with love and romance, a tradition that first started from the common belief in France and England that birds started their mating season on February 14th.

The first Valentine was sent in the 15th century The oldest record of a Valentine being sent was a poem written by a French medieval duke named Charles to his wife in 1415. One of the lines in the poem read, “I am already sick of love, my very gentle Valentine,” penned while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London, aged just twenty-one. People were

exchanging cards and handwritten letters to both lovers and friends during the 17th century, but it was in the 1840s that the first Valentine’s Day cards were first mass-produced.

Flowers … The tradition of giving Valentine’s Day flowers dates back to the 17th century, but the act of giving flowers then became a popular trend during the Victorian Era, including on Valentine’s Day, with red roses symbolizing deep love.

… and Chocolates! The first heart-shaped box of chocolates was introduced in 1861. It was created by Richard Cadbury, son of Cadbury founder, John Cadbury, who started packaging chocolates in fancy boxes to increase sales … and the rest (as any dentist or dietician will tell you) is history!

Recipe

Handmade Truffles Ingredients Makes about 15 truffles 2 double chocolate chip muffins 2 tablespoons of chocolate hazelnut spread 1 handful of raisins or sultanas A few drops of water Coloured sugar sprinkles or your preferred choice of decoration

What better way to say ‘I love you’ than with chocolate?! With this super-easy recipe, you can make your own gorgeous chocolate truffles which you could then pop into a box or jar and tie with a ribbon for a lovely, handmade gift!

Method • Crumble the chocolate muffins (about 125g/4oz) into a large bowl, then stir in the chocolate hazelnut spread. • Add the raisins or sultanas and a few drops of water to create a crumbly mixture. • Squeeze teaspoonfuls of the mixture into balls and then roll the balls in the coloured sugar sprinkles. These will keep for about five days in an airtight container, if kept at room temperature.

Don’t Let the Scammers Steal More Than Just Your Heart This Valentine's Season!

www.sandallroofing.co.uk

Bourne D I S C O V E R I N G March

February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key time for fraudsters aiming to steal your money as well as your heart. ‘Romance fraud’ is one of the top five most reported scams to Action Fraud, and involves people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship. Now comes the timely reminder to people who may be looking for love to be extra vigilant, taking measures to ensure their ‘perfect match’ is really who they say they are. In the last financial year, the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) received 8,036 reports of romance fraud, with an average loss per victim of £11,500. Men make up 53% of cases and the 65 to 74 age group is the one most likely to be targeted. One of the most high-profile cases is that of Vicky – a victim of Emmanuel Scotts, a convicted, serial romance fraudster who scammed four women out of more than £320,000. In November 2022, Scotts was sentenced to twelve years behind bars. Vicky explains, “They look for your weaknesses and mine is my son and not having his dad around. He made a point of being interested in everything my son did. He praised me constantly on what a great job I was doing, bringing him up on my own, telling me he wanted to take care of me.” Scotts befriended several women on an internet dating site and, after gaining their trust, he persuaded them to “invest” savings and returning small sums of “interest” to extract more money. How to stay safe from romance fraudsters: • Be suspicious of any requests for money from someone you have never met in person, particularly if you have only recently met online. • Be cautious about how much information about yourself you are sharing online and who you are sharing information with. • Speak to your family or friends to get advice. Fraudsters will subtly isolate you for their own purposes. • Profile photos may not be genuine. Performing a reverse image search can find photos that have been taken from somewhere, or someone, else. FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

Wills

Why do I need a will?

Wills are important to ensure that your assets pass to those you would like. If you are not married, your partner will not automatically inherit your estate. If you have children, you can also use a will to nominate guardians to ensure they are looked after if the worst may happen.

Lasting Powers of Attorney

Probate What is it?

What are they?

When a person sadly passes away, some banks and institutes require a Grant of Probate to enable you to collect in their assets. If you are selling a house, a solicitor will require this to complete the sale.

These are used when you lose mental capacity but must be created while you can still make decisions. If you do not create these in time, then unfortunately the solution is more costly and time consuming.

We are licensed to assist with the probate application on your behalf, as well as distribute the estate, making everything simpler at this difficult time.

Lasting Powers of Attorneys (LPAs) are documents that allow someone that you nominate as your attorney, to deal with your financial or health affairs on your behalf.

Melton Building Society and the June Roper Sporting Trust Champion, Chase Sharpe

M

elton Building Society, in collaboration with the June Roper Sporting Trust, is proud to announce their support for Chase Sharpe, a young and ambitious motor racing talent from our local community. Sharpe, approaching his 13th birthday, has been an emerging talent in the racing circuit since his early childhood, marked by his victory in the 2022 UK Kart Series Championship. Chase’s journey in motorsports, fuelled by a passion ignited at the age of six with his first gokarting lesson, has now received a significant boost through a £2,000 grant from the June Roper Sporting Trust. This funding has enabled Chase to acquire professional racing gear, including a specialised fireproof racing suit and gloves, essential for his advancement into car racing. If you’re an ambitious young sportsperson, group, or team, in need of support go to www.themelton. co.uk/community-support/charitable-foundation to see if you’re eligible for funding.

Mayor

Words from the Mayor

COUNCILLOR BRENDA JOHNSON

What a start we have had to the new year with flooding in lots of places!

M

y husband and I have been very much involved in supporting and setting up rest centres and helping with road closures during the flooding. We are both members of Community Response Lincolnshire and the county’s “Ready for Anything” volunteers. (For more information on either of these groups, please contact me.) A shout out for staff from SKDC who joined us at rest centres and were really on top of their game. Going forward into the new year, I have two fundraising events to look forward to. I am hosting the Band from County Hell at the Corn Exchange on February 17th, during which there will be a sausage and mash supper served. The cost is £20 per person and tickets are available from SKDC. Then my Civic Dinner is on March 8th at the Corn Exchange. Check the Town Council notice board and Facebook page for more details on this. Last month, I mentioned the number of activities we have in Bourne that you can join in with, and I hope that you will all find new activities to do in the town. Bourne has so much to offer for adults and children. I was invited to a performance of “Matilda” at the

Corn Exchange in Stamford recently. This was performed by children and adults from Bourne who train here at LDC. The performance was extremely impressive, and I would encourage anyone who has the chance to attend any of the performances by these wonderful young people to go along. Last year, I wrote about Twenty Village Hall’s new committee working hard to get the hall back up and running so I was delighted to be able to draw a Christmas raffle there which raised over £600 for the cause. We have some wonderful local businesses that were very generous in supporting this venture. If you would like to get involved with this exciting project to restore this great building, please feel free to contact me. With the possibility of snow fall soon, please ensure you all have the equipment you may need before travelling - a snow shovel, extra warm clothing, water, a foil blanket, suitable footwear, a reflective jacket of some sort, or a reflective triangle. A good idea is to have a bag of warm clothing and fleece throws in your vehicle. Please stay safe at this difficult time of year, especially if the weather turns really cold and don’t forget to check in on vulnerable people in your community. Keep doing what you all do best and look after each other. I’m so proud to live in this caring community.

STROUD BREWERY

T

he Gloucestershire market town of Stroud and the areas surrounding it attract visitors all year round. The Cotswold area is known for its outstanding, picturesque, natural beauty. History tells us that Stroud had woollen mills that were powered by the surrounding rivers, which flowed through the valleys, and Cotswold sheep supplied the wool. During the 19th century, Stroud was well-known for its industrial and trading connections. Some former working mills now offer guided tours. The Walled Garden attracts visitors, as does the Farmers’ Market and the local brewery. Eateries and restaurants provide local, organic produce, incorporated into numerous, very popular dishes. Multi award-winning Stroud Brewery (Est. 2006) is renowned for the productions of exceptional organic craft beers and is now one of Stroud’s major attractions. Their beers include ranges of core, specials and more. TOM LONG (3.8% vol) is a popular organic amber bitter beer – Smooth, malty and citrusy. HOP DROP (4.5% vol) is gluten-free. This much loved, organic pale ale production, I recognised as fruity and hoppy, plus citrusy. BUDDING (4.5%

vol) comes across (to me) as floral and zesty, for this organic, pale ale production.

By Trevor La

ngley

If a stout is required, then BIG CAT (4.5% vol) organic stout does not disappoint in any way. Rich, with chocolate overtones, makes this a very popular selection for stout lovers. ALEDERFLOWER (4.9% vol) organic pale ale, I found to be crisp and with floral notes - another, hugely popular production, from the Stroud Brewery Company. If low alcohol is for you, then EASY PEASY (2.6% vol) organic pale ale ‘ticks many boxes.’ This ‘session ale’ has a floral bouquet and is citrusy, to satisfaction, with flavours from organic elderflowers and lemons. The outstanding efforts and achievements of all staff at Stroud Brewery, are very much appreciated and recognised now further afield, as the word spreads about this exceptional beer producing company. Please view their excellent and very informative website for all details and information. Online ordering is available and easy, and it is most worthy of a visit and highly recommended. 2023 is Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance’s Busiest Year in History Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance has experienced its busiest year on record, responding to 1,771 missions in the last twelve months. The charity’s crews of pilots, doctors and paramedics responded to 1,044 missions in Lincolnshire, 541 in Nottinghamshire, and the remaining 181 in the surrounding counties.

S

erious medical injuries accounted for 676 missions, followed by 488 road traffic incidents, as well as 158 assaults and 50 sporting or leisure-related injuries. Most patients were between forty and sixty years of age. Critically ill and injured patients were taken to hospitals including Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre, Hull Royal Infirmary, Sheffield Northern General and Lincoln County Hospital. The Christmas and New Year period was particularly busy for the crews. On average, LNAA teams respond to four missions per day, but over these nine days, they received fortythree emergency calls to attend patients needing a range of lifesaving treatments including blood transfusions, anaesthetics, and lifesaving drugs. Between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, crews responded to seventeen incidents, making 2023 the busiest Christmas ever. CEO, Karen Jobling said, “Each year the number of missions we attend increases. Last year we responded to 151 more than in 2022, treating critically ill and injured patients across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.” Caring for a patient does not stop when the doctors and paramedics transfer them to hospital. LNAA’s Aftercare Team continued to grow from strength to strength and the team reached out to 916 patients and/or their families during 2023. From providing support and arranging fifty-eight visits to HQ to being a listening ear, the team helped many patients come to terms with their injuries and cope with the impact of what happened to them. Karen explained, “We start a new year with great optimism. 2024 is the thirtieth anniversary for Lincs &

66

Bourne

Notts Air Ambulance and we have ambitious plans for the next twelve months. As a charity, we receive no direct government funding for our operations and we rely on the support of people in every community in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire for the £10million needed to operate twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year. As demand for our service grows, we know that costs will also increase, and we thank everyone who has supported us in whatever way and enabled us to be by the side of patients … day and night.” FE BR U A R Y 2 0 2 4

APV ELECTRICS

All Aspects of Domestic Electrical Work Undertaken

ocal, highly qualified, professional electrician, Tony Vetere (47) is approaching twenty years in the trade, and almost half of that time as a successful, self-employed contractor. Whilst most of his time has been spent on domestic properties built since the 1960s, a recent project on a four-hundred-year-old residence has given him a whole new set of challenges which he has tackled with relish.

A wide range of electrical services is available. These can go from full and partial circuit installations and rewires through to the replacing and upgrading of light fittings, sockets, and switches, to the external installation of light fittings in sheds, garages, outbuildings, and pond surrounds. APV Electrics can also offer boiler, shower, and cooker connections; installation of television boosters, extractor fans, and additional phone outlets; fuse

Most of Tony’s business has been within South Lincolnshire and North Cambridgeshire to include Peterborough, but he is keen to travel further distances if required. Several favourable recommendations from customers highlight his attention to detail, his reliability and communication skills, besides him producing “excellent work at a very fair price.”
