Welcome to your February issue...

February of course sees us celebrating Valentine’s Day.

W

e can shower our loved one with tokens of our affection. I once read that “Love” means nothing in tennis, but it’s everything in life.

Songwriters have already been here many times before, and yes, it is indeed a “many splendored thing” and many would agree that “Love is all you need”. Some of you might even remember glam-rockers, Sweet, suggesting “Love is like oxygen” in 1978.

This month, I just want to share with you this memorable line from Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy” and hope that you all have a fabulous, fun-filled February. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”

Just a few weeks into a new year and we’ve already seen a strong contender for 2022’s “Dumb Advice of the Year” awards.

With energy bills threatened to go through the roof as dramatically as heat through a badly insulated loft, energy provider, Ovo, have advised us to keep warm by cuddling your pets, eating porridge, and throwing in a few star-jumps for good measure. Oh, how our border collies squirmed as I leapt up and splattered them both in porridge! Perhaps I should have taken each suggestion separately!

On the subject of bills, my friend said he couldn’t afford to pay his water bill, so I sent him a Get Well Soon card. He’s had an awful cold twice this year; I think it’s a case of deja-flu!

Anyway, romance is very much in the air in this month’s issue, so may you all feel the love and make the most of the lighter evenings and warmer days to come.

AD 289 - A Christian, Valentine of Rome, is martyred under Emperor Claudius. While in jail, this priest is said to have converted his jailer by healing his blind daughter's sight. He is later said to have fallen in love with the daughter, sending her a note saying, “From your Valentine”, but this is apocryphal.

AD 1601 - St Valentine's Day has entered the popular consciousness to the extent that Shakespeare mentions it in Ophelia's lament in “Hamlet”: “To-morrow is Saint Valentine's Day, /All in the morning betime, /And I a maid at your window, /To be your Valentine.”

Mid-18th century - The passing of love-notes becomes popular in England, a precursor to the St Valentine's Day card as we know it today. Early ones are made of lace and paper.

1797 - “The Young Man’s Valentine Writer” is published, suggesting

appropriate rhymes and messages, and, as postal services became more affordable, the anonymous St Valentine's Day card became possible. By the early 19th century, they become so popular that factories start to mass-produce them.

Mid-1980s - The commercialisation

continues: noting the sales effect on chocolate, flowers and cards, the diamond industry gets involved, promoting St Valentine's Day as a time for giving jewellery and so the “tradition” takes off.

AD 2022 - An estimated 1 billion St Valentine's Day cards will be sent worldwide this year, making it the second most cardheavy celebration, after Christmas.

I have always had a passion for sport and loved getting active in any way possible. Throughout my education, I excelled in many sports from football to netball, and even tried my hand at pole vault. I went on to study Sports Coaching at Loughborough University where I took advantage of the many opportunities from various coaching qualifications and sporting facilities. Upon leaving university, I began working at Tallington Lakes where I instruct skiing, snowboarding, climbing and SUPing (stand up paddling!)

Throughout my life, I have experienced many injuries and I can fully understand the pain and frustration which these bring. My aim is to help everyone overcome injuries or general aches and live a pain-free life. In the past year, I have worked alongside Bourne Town Football Club providing ‘gameday treatment’ for many of the players.

However, sports massage isn’t just for athletes or people who go to the gym; it’s for everyone! Sitting at a desk all day or driving long distances can strain our muscles, but an hour’s maintenance massage every couple of months can make a world of difference. Well, we are now well into a new year and maybe into a “new you” …. dare I say, an even better and improved version? his month, we have decided to focus on one of our most successful and fastest selling treatments, and one which I personally love.

In the quest for trying to stay youthful and radiant, more and more people are turning to injectable treatments to reverse the signs of ageing - and two popular go-tos are Profhilo and dermal fillers. But even though there are similarities between them, the two are actually very different anti-ageing treatments.

Profhilo is the 'acceptable injectable', which targets dullness and all the things we must anticipate as we age, like fine lines and wrinkles, skin laxity and loss of fullness. Even though both fillers and Profhilo involve hyaluronic acid being injected into the face to undo signs of ageing, this is where the similarities stop.

Whilst dermal fillers are used for altering the shape of facial features, replacing lost volume due to ageing and contouring, Profhilo doesn’t have any role in volumizing or restructuring the face.

A New Year And A Time To Review Legal Matters

few weeks into a new year is often a good time to reflect on resolutions and to review your legal matters. Some clients decide to instruct us on a house move which is a very important step for them. Other clients may be making wills and lasting powers of attorney to protect them, either on their death against the uncertainty of intestacy, or on the many uncertainties they may face during their life.

Other clients may be starting a business and may need advice on a lease. Sadly, some clients might need assistance when a loved one has died, and the affairs of their estate need to be resolved. Having a local solicitor on hand can make matters a whole lot easier when sympathetic contact is required.

Perhaps clients are thinking of getting married or moving into a home and need advice, should something go wrong. Perhaps a deed of beneficial interest is needed. There are employment situations which can occur, and which can

cause anxiety and require legal advice.

Seeing a solicitor or other legal adviser faceto-face during the pandemic has not been straightforward. At the time of writing, it is still possible, but of course, in this uncertain world, there might be further restrictions by the time this article reaches you! Every year can present uncertainty and risk, and legal advisers are there to try to help clients understand and manage that risk.

When do you maintain your Electrical System?

ne of the most important things that people overlook when thinking about having an electrical condition report is the routine maintenance it does for the system.

We all know how heat expands and cold contracts metal, but a lot of people don’t think about the effect this has on your electrical system over the years, especially if nothing has been done to it for a good while.

Often, when I go to a system that has not been tested for ten years or more, connections can often be turned several times before they have fully tightened again, which to me, is a real concern. With loose connections being the number one cause of electrical house fire, this maintenance is crucial to keep your system maintained and your electrical circuits safe.

I am often trying to explain to people that an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) is more than just a tick box exercise for the insurance company; it is something that can give you real peace of mind. I guess it’s a bit like when you have been avoiding going to the doctor because you think something may be wrong, and when you get checked out and

realise you are ok, the relief you get is similar.

After completing an EICR, even in times when we have found problems in a system, the feedback has often been that it is much better than the client had imagined, and it allowed these clients to trust that their home is safe again.

So, my message this month is do not live in fear; get your home tested, as it most likely isn’t as bad as you think it will be!

I have been writing these articles in various form for almost fifteen years and, in that time, I must have written dozens of articles about the benefits of writing a will.

It was not until I had a conversation with a friend just before Christmas, however, that they pointed out that all of my articles consider the practical benefits of having a will, but none have addressed the emotional benefits which she thought it was worth me touching upon.

Yet more have said that they felt protected, as if making the wills had thrown a big blanket over them and their family to protect them from outside influences.

I have lost count of the people who have cried when I have spoken to them; I am pretty sure it is not because I am a horrible person! But having the courage to have the difficult conversation brings out a lot of feelings, so we always have a box of tissues at the ready.

Go to Court and Risk a Fine?

I

t is widely known that in family proceedings there are increasing numbers of “litigants in person” as they are called, that is, parties who do not have legal representation. The reason is the withdrawal of Legal Aid over the last two decades. Parents in dispute over the arrangements for their children should first have to undergo mediation which is designed to avoid the need for court, but, without the advantage of legal advice emphasising the benefit of mediation, such dispute resolution is often side-lined, and parents end up in court anyway.

Dominic Raab, the current Lord Chancellor, has an idea that parents considered to be abusing the court process by making unnecessary court applications, should face a financial penalty. Mr Raab considers that 50% of family cases that don’t involve domestic abuse should be resolvable without going to court.

He is probably right, but the answer is unlikely to be fining unrepresented parents for trying to get their problems resolved. February is the season of love and romance – but it is also a key date for fraudsters aiming to steal your money as well as your heart! According to statistics from Action Fraud, reports of romance fraud have increased by 40% in the year to April 2021.

Dating online without meeting in person has become the new normal throughout the coronavirus pandemic. However, fraudsters have duped those looking for love out of an estimated £73.9m during this period. Some seven million UK residents are believed to be registered on dating sites, with Tinder leading the way with online dating apps.

However, for many it can spiral into heartbreak and financial misery when looking for “love at first swipe”.

Fraudsters trick victims into sending money or gather enough personal information to steal their identities, resulting in financial and emotional misery.

Here are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe: D Don't rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions.

A Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term 'dating scam'.

T Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them.

E Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you've only met online.

S Stay on the dating site messenger service.

Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable. Be confident that you know who you are speaking to and be wary if they fail to meet you in person.

Every one of us must be ready to move forwards into this, still, new year with hope and optimism that it really must be ‘better’ this year.

E

ver the optimist, but not forgetting the need to still be cautious and acknowledging the sadness and hurt some have had to endure, our community needs to have things to look forward to.

As a community, there are two events this year that we can all participate in.

On the evening of Saturday March 19th, there will be “Light Up Bourne”, a new event sponsored by SKDC and organised by Bourne Town Council. All around the town there will be several ‘Light Installations’ to be enjoyed, with some having an element of participation. There will be a road closure on North Street, and everyone is invited to move from one to another and enjoy the spectacle. There will, hopefully, be other attractions in and around the town.

Co-ordinated by Bourne Town Council, the weekend of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June will see the whole of Bourne celebrating seventy years of incredible public service. Everyone is invited to participate in any way they wish. Events across Bourne will include the traditional Bourne Festival, (organised by the Round Table), a street market in North Street, a Gala Dinner Dance, a Car Show, and a Parade! Following national guidelines, the whole weekend will begin with the lighting of a beacon.

Elsea Park Community Trust are also planning a whole variety of events for the weekend, and we hope there will be several localised street parties across the town, along with ‘well over-decorated’ houses and shops!
