Welcome to your November issue...

I

It’s getting closer by the day, and I’m talking turkey, (along with trees, tinsel and trimming-up!) as the whole wonderful Christmas season gathers momentum once more.

t’s at times like this that we’ll realise just what awful effects the Covid pandemic has had on everyone, having missed out on last year’s preparations and excitement. This month’s issue features many local restaurants and hostelries offering all manner of attractions for the festive weeks ahead, so remember to book early for your special events.

The Magical Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On in Bourne on November 27th, alongside other similar events in neighbouring towns, will help add to this long-overdue feeling that things are now getting back to normal.

Claire x

I was amused to see the BBC sending their man to report on the recent fuel shortages at our garages. His name … Phil McCann! Not to be outdone, however, we included in our October issue an advertisement for a “Front of House Manager” at a local hostelry who would “join the team and help create an exciting and stable future”. The pub just had to be … The White Horse at Baston! (Nay lad!) Humour, it would appear, is fortunately all around, even though my monthly mirthful moments might make you think otherwise. So, while I’m on the subject, I recently asked the guy in the bookshop, “Any books on tortoises?” He said, “Hardback?” “Yes,” I replied, “and such a small head too”. Enjoy the read!

Bourne Elsea Park Church EYFS Open Morning

(Early Years Foundation Stage)

Wednesday 10th November 2021

A

9.15am - 11.15am s you walk through the doors at Bourne Elsea Park C of E Primary Academy, you will be wowed by the enthusiastic children, the “Take Care environment”, creative teaching and learning, and a familyfriendly ethos.

Bourne Elsea Park opened in September 2014. We currently have 300 pupils on roll and are a oneform-entry school, although certain year groups are currently two-form. This is due to Lincolnshire County Council asking us to increase the number of school places to help with the demand currently in the Bourne area. As a Church School, we not only encourage our pupils to strive for excellence in the core subjects,

but to broaden their education, to embrace and develop the concepts of faith and spirituality, of hope and charity, and to enable them to make more informed decisions later in life as broadminded and knowledgeable world citizens. Parents/carers from other faiths may wish to send their children to a school where all faiths are respected, protected and encouraged. We see the development of our children as a partnership between home and school, where we work together to ensure all children achieve their potential. The concept of “Take Care” is central to the way we live our lives in school. We take care and respect ourselves, others, our school, the environment, and the world in which we live. As a thriving and aspirational school, we aim to provide a wide range of learning experiences where children gain a positive self-image to help them on their path as successful and happy, life-long learners. Our children feel safe and know there is always someone they can talk to if they have a worry. Mental health and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do. Every child at Bourne Elsea Park is valued as a unique individual. We honk like the geese, supporting each other, to create a wonderful learning experience!

“Out of This World” Learning and “Out in The Open” Learning at Morton

P

upils from Morton CE Primary School got their hands on rare samples of Moon rocks and meteorites at the beginning of the Autumn Term during a series of science lessons which were truly “out of this world”! Children were given the unique opportunity to touch a piece of space rock.

Parents, children and staff came together to celebrate the opening of our new Early Years outdoor classroom. A grand cake sale was held, raising over £200, to support the fundraising efforts of our new PTA committee. The recently improved and extended area is perfect for outdoor learning, and is complete with three different height, water trays; a ‘Literacy Den’; a kitchen; a growing area; a community table and benches; a Maths area and much more!

These rare samples were part of an educational pack provided free of charge by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council, in a bid to inspire young people to get involved in science and complement classroom studies. The pack includes a 1.2-billion-year-old piece of Mars rock and a 4.3-billion-year-old nickel meteorite. It is unlikely that students will ever get the chance to hold an object older than this, as Earth itself was formed 4.6 billion years ago.

The 143-Storey Treehouse

First Big Book of Why

BY ANDY GRIFFITHS AND TERRY DENTON

Why can’t penguins fly? Why do we brush our teeth? Why does popcorn pop? Why do elephants have trunks? Why are clouds different shapes? Why does my tummy rumble? This magnificent book features chapters on Bugs, Pets, Wild Animals, the Body, Food, Machines and Space and also includes some of the mysteries which experts are still trying to solve! With stunning photography and gorgeous original illustrations by Kate Slater, this is the ultimate gift for kids who need to know WHY.

Three Sisters

There are lots of laughs at every level in this new book in the number one bestselling, Treehouse series. Andy’s been a bit stressed, so Terry has decided the perfect way for them to relax is to head up to their new camping ground level for a much-needed holiday. Terry forgets to pack the tent and the food, their attempt at fishing ends in disaster, the spooky campfire stories are a little too spooky and then, to make matters worse, all of Andy’s fellow campers start mysteriously disappearing. Can Andy brave the dark, dark woods and rescue them in time to finish writing their next book?

BY HEATHER MORRIS

From the author of “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “Cilka’s Journey”, comes an astonishing new story. When they are little girls, Cibi, Magda and Livia make a promise to their father - that they will stay together, no matter what. Years later, at just 15, Livia is ordered to Auschwitz by the Nazis. Cibi, only 19 herself, remembers their promise and follows Livia, determined to protect her sister, or die with her. Together, they fight to survive through unimaginable cruelty and hardship. Magda, only 17, stays with her mother and grandfather, hiding out in a neighbour’s attic or in the forest when the Nazi militia come to round up friends, neighbours and family. She escapes for a time, but eventually she too is captured and transported to the death camp. In Auschwitz-Birkenau the three sisters are reunited and, remembering their father, they make a new promise, this time to each other: That they will survive.

Bourne’s Dance School now back in the Studio

T

hese are exciting times for Apollo Dance because not only are the youngsters loving the fact that Zoom classes are now a thing of the past, but also that their teacher, Zoe Darby, has now returned from maternity leave and that baby Henry has joined the Apollo family.

Based at the former Youth Centre on Queens Road, (now known as “1 Hub Bourne”) Apollo Dance have for five years been offering children classes in Ballet, Modern, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop and Acro, besides Zoe choreographing dances for festivals. Zoe trained at North Liverpool Dance Academy, gaining her D.D.E. (Diploma in Dance Education) in Ballet, Tap

and Modern, and she is also trained in Acrobatic Arts. Furthermore, she has qualifications in personal training and exercise to music, step and spinning. The Bourne Lions Family Fun Day early in September gave Apollo Dance the perfect opportunity to showcase their talents and enthusiasm, and it is hoped that the future will bring many more occasions like this where the dancers can perform for the public. Zoe also looks forward to the day when Apollo Dance have their own premises. Apollo Dance cater for students from across the local area and look forward to welcoming anyone (from toddler to late teens), who wants to join their happy Apollo family.

Stamford’s Celebrity Designer Wants You to Steal the Show! Anna d’Amato, the owner of ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ in Stamford, took the ambitious step in 2018 of opening ‘Anna Couture Brides’, a delightful property opposite The George Hotel on High Street, St. Martins. Barely two years since its arrival on Cheyne Lane, ‘Anna Couture Boutique’ had already become so popular, offering the latest stylish and glamorous ladies wear for all special occasions. Now the time was right to expand the business to become a beautiful design house, where Anna and her team of highlyskilled seamstresses now have room to work their magic. A costume design graduate with a particularly enviable C.V, Anna has years of experience in costume design for both television and film, with anecdotes galore! For instance, she was Madonna’s seamstress for a year during her 2006 “Confessions” tour. Anna explains,“During my time making Madonna’s corsets, I had to sew up a fishnet stocking of hers while she was still wearing it, which was terrifying, (my needle was millimetres from her leg!)” She has produced costumes for blockbuster productions, including “Star Wars” and “The Phantom of the Opera”, and has worked with Gok Wan.

Bourne

Before taking on the new premises, a number of wedding dresses would have been sold, including some from Chanticleer, a top British bridalwear designer and manufacturer. The opportunity to buy the Chanticleer label proved irresistible for Anna and that prompted the expansion on to the High Street (literally). Anna had previously run her own bridal studios in North London and Gerrards Cross for many years, so her experience is vast. Furthermore, she has the trained expert’s eye to understand a bride’s vision for her wedding dress and then the skill to produce a breathtaking endproduct. The Anna Couture Brides premises contains work rooms and stocks of beautiful fabric, whilst Anna and her team are adept at ensuring that the bride-to-be will enjoy her memorable couture experience, as her dress design takes shape before her very eyes, or a gown is altered to fit perfectly. There can be little doubt that you’ll walk away feeling that your particular needs and wants for that special dress will be satisfied and that your wedding dress will have you feeling like the star of the show!

BOURNE TOWN FC Bright Future Ahead

T

he committee members at Bourne Town FC have been very busy, particularly during the past year, as several facilities at the club have seen a massive refurbishment. The final, and most significant, improvement they have made to the club is the installation of new LED floodlights which have been the culmination of a five-year plan, from applying for grants, through fundraising to meet the rest of the required amount, to purchasing the magnificent new lights which have cost the club close to £60,000! This improvement not only saves the club money by being more economical to operate, but also adds to the strong position in which this ambitious club wants to function in the years to come. It is over thirty years since the original floodlights were installed. Sheffield United, at the time sitting at the top of the ‘Second Division’ (now The Championship), were invited to the club to play the first game under the new lights. In his welcome notes, Club Chairman (and one of Bourne Town’s finest), Chris Notley, thanked not only the famous guests and their Manager, Dave Bassett, but also the many local firms and individuals at the club who had made it all possible. He adds how, under their Manager, Mark Mitchell and his assistant, Jimmy “Tiddler” Jackson, there was now a side of whom “we could feel justifiably proud”. It is now the hope of this dedicated and ambitious committee that the local town and its people come down and support the club, to benefit from all of these improvements made over the past twelve months. Watch this space, as they look to get a well-known side down to the Abbey Lawn for a night game to celebrate, just like they did thirty years ago! Up the Wakes!!!

The Favourable Side of Wills? WORDS FROM RICHARD WOOD

Some clients may well be reluctant to make a will, as it can seem a little daunting. However, it provides certainty and avoids unwelcome outcomes under the Law of Intestacy. It particularly provides reassurance that our property will go to those we want it to go to, rather than anyone else.

We know when a client holds property how adjustments might need to be made to assist the will instructions or when a life interest may be advisable.

You may have seen those programmes on the television where a missing heir has to be traced. So, what better than to keep a will updated to avoid unpleasant surprises? Indeed, once a will is made, it should be reviewed every few years, or when someone dies or is born; perhaps, a new grandchild for instance.

Certainty is everything Sometimes wills may be challenged by a

Solicitors are well positioned for advising on the allowances available to the parties regarding Inheritance Tax (‘death duties’). For married couples, leaving property to one another is tax-efficient under the Spouse Exemption. There is also a Nil Rate Allowance for each adult of £325,000 and potentially a Property Nil Rate Band Allowance of £175,000 if you are leaving a home to a child. These allowances when unused can be transferred to a second spouse estate.

Blast That Fat... For Good We are now gearing up towards the party season, so what better way to start making those all-important changes than by joining the many local people who have already chosen to begin their “fat-dissolving journey” with us?

W

e use a fat-dissolving injection known as AQUALYX, which is a safe and very effective method of PERMANENTLY destroying fat cells in the treated area. It produces long-lasting results which means you can banish those unwanted areas of stubborn fat that diet and exercise don’t seem to shift. Aqualyx can be used to treat double chins, bingo wings and man boobs, but our most popular procedures by far have been LEGS, BUMS and TUMS!!! The treatments are pain-free and done at intervals of one month, with the number of treatments required being dependent on the area needing attention. It’s ideal for those ladies who have had their figure affected either by the birth of their children or the onset of the menopause.

Aqualyx BEFORE

AFTER

This body contouring, skin tightening procedure takes around twenty minutes and results in around 2cm of stubborn fat being cleared after four to five weeks. Some people will see dramatic results in just one or two treatments and, if you continue with a healthy lifestyle, the fat removed by Aqualyx will never return. We offer very competitive prices and treatment packages are available to help with costs. We also now carry out HAND REJUVENATION which again has proven to be very popular, as many women find that they are making their

Let Tallington Lakes Pro Shop solve your “Quarantine Feet” problems

H

ave you been struggling to find your footing after lockdown? A dramatic change in routine for your feet, through an increase in activity by walking or running more, can bring about different strains of discomfort and even pain that you may not have previously experienced.

Walking around the house barefoot or in house shoes, like slippers, puts an increased stress on your ligaments, tendons, and the ball of the foot. Such stresses can lead to injuries like plantar fasciitis or inflamed and achy muscles. By wearing ill-fitting footwear that doesn’t provide the proper support to your foot arch, you are more likely to do more damage, even in your own home. What many people are now dubbing “quarantine feet” is more often than not an unintended consequence of wearing inadequate shoes for an extended period of time. Tallington Lakes Pro Shop can offer guidance and support as to what boots and shoes are best suited for your feet and your choice of outdoor pursuit. Through their boot fitting service, * the team may be able to provide answers to your foot issues that could be a consequence of an improperly fitted walking shoe or ski boot. By using their expert knowledge, they are able to find the best fit for your feet, whether that’s for

walking your dog around local fields or skiing in the Alps. They will properly measure the length and width of your feet and recommend a wide range of shoes or boots to ensure you are able to get the right fit. The Pro Shop can offer advice on whether a footbed is needed or whether a certain type of sock is worth your while, in guaranteeing that you get the most out of your footwear. No matter what you choose, just remember to give yourself plenty of time to break them in, or your feet may pay the price! Tallington Lakes Pro Shop is open seven days a week, between 10am and 9.30pm midweek, and 9am and 6pm at the weekends. Please call 01778 381154 to enquire and book. (*Please note that there is a £20 charge for ski boot fittings, refundable on purchase.)

Your Adaptable Brain -

The Importance of Brain Plasticity

N

europlasticity (the ‘plastic brain’) is the ability of our brain to change its connections or rewire itself. Our amazing brain is continually moulding and modifying itself to our environment, events in our lives, words, feelings, and the people around us. Without this ability, any brain, not just the human brain, would be unable to develop from infancy through to adulthood or recover from brain injury. Our brain is so exceptional and what makes the brain exceptional is that, unlike a computer, it processes sensory and motor signals in parallel. It has many neural pathways that can replicate another’s function so that small errors in development or temporary loss of function through damage can be easily corrected by rerouting signals along a different pathway. Different pathways form and fall dormant, are created and cast-off, according to our personal experiences. So, this vibrant process allows us to learn, develop and adapt to our ever-changing experiences. Our brains are really amazing Every time we learn something new, we create new connections between the neurons, and this is happening to all of us, all the time. This process can be encouraged and stimulated, allowing us to learn, relearn and direct our lives, thoughts and behaviours, creating exciting possibilities. This process can be so useful to us enabling us to reinvent ourselves, move away from our current state of things, or to overcome past traumatic events which create anxiety/stress or depression and fears which may lead to avoidance behaviours which then hold us back from living life to our fullest. By learning how to adjust our thought patterns and behaviours,

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy helps you to create the changes you want in your extraordinary brain. If a person believes he or she can get smarter, better or more skilled at something through sustained effort, this is how neuroplasticity works, enabling us to purposefully rewire the brain, achieving what we really want. Learning a new language or a musical instrument works in this way too, no matter what the age. So change your brain today! The degree to which we apply the brain’s nearmagical abilities is also dependent on how committed we are in encouraging neuroplasticity and how we approach life in general.

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you rewire your brain to make the best version of you.

Growing Campaign to Stop Developers Demolishing Historic Railway Bridge The campaign is to stop a three-arch Victorian redundant railway bridge (Bridge 234) being demolished to make way for a children’s play area on a proposed housing development on Bourne’s Elsea Park.

Backed by angry townsfolk and conservationists, Bourne History Group, supported by a former lady Mayor of Bourne, is now involved in setting up a charitable trust specifically to restore the classic Bridge 234 and raise funds to maintain it at no cost to council taxpayers or the residents’ association. The group has also collected a petition signed by nearly 1,400 residents. Not only does Bridge 234 have unique design features and was partially made from bricks baked from nearby clay pits, but it is the last surviving railwaybuilt structure in public view in Bourne, a town which owed its Victorian and Edwardian prosperity to the fact it was a sizeable four-way railway junction. Bridge 234, built as a farm overbridge, was in the days of steam a trademark gateway to Bourne, which would have been the first sight of the town by rail passengers including holidaymakers

ugh Cathedral

journeying from the East Midlands to the sunny Norfolk resorts such as Cromer. After the railway was lifted in the mid-1960s, Bridge 234 became overgrown and forgotten, and until Bourne History Group raised serious concerns at a major loss of the town’s heritage, several residents were even unaware of its existence. Now they are desperately fighting to save it. Bellway Homes has planning permission to build 373 homes on the surrounding land, but still want to knock down Bridge 234. Destroying it would not stop Bellway from building a single home – so why do it when there are alternatives? For more details, contact Steve Giulliari at Bourne History Group on 07369 218764 or at sagiullari@hotmail.co.uk. Alternatively, contact Robin Jones, Editor of Heritage Railway magazine, 01778 561099 or 07500 0872861, at robinhwjones12w0@gmail.com.

Simple comfort food doesn’t, come in a finer form than a baked potato. Perfect after a cold night watching the fireworks! Stuff them with bacon, cheese and soured cream and dig in! Serves 4

Ingredients

Method

1 Heat the oven to 220°C/200°C fan/gas 7. Rinse the potatoes, then sprinkle all over with sea salt. Put the potatoes directly onto the oven shelf and bake for about 1 hour until crisp on the outside and soft inside when tested with a skewer.

4 baking potatoes Sea salt for sprinkling 100g bacon lardons 80g unsalted butter, cubed 80g grated Cheddar, plus an extra 2 tbsp for topping 4 tbsp soured cream, plus extra to serve 1 tbsp chopped chives, plus extra to serve Sourced from www.deliciousmagazine.co.uk

2 Meanwhile, fry the bacon lardons in a non-stick frying pan until crisp. 3 Once the potatoes are ready, turn the oven to grill, remove the potatoes from the oven and transfer to a baking tray. Slice off the tops (hold the potatoes steady using a clean tea towel), then carefully scoop the soft potato centres into a bowl. Add the butter, 80g cheese and soured cream to the bowl and mix well. Stir in the chives and lardons, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the cheesy filling back into the potato shells, then top with the extra cheese. 4 Grill the potatoes for 10 minutes until golden and bubbling hot. Serve with the extra soured cream and chives.

Food & Drink

CHOOSING WINE:

Six Christmas Crackers

F

or Christmas festivities, wines always find general favour. Which wines, what with and when, need not be so complex. I selected some popular choices, that satisfy many situations and also pair with food, admirably. Not forgetting Santa (and his grown-up helpers!), when he does his rounds, a joyful sherry is always welcome!

For Christmas morning, Buck’s Fizz has become a regular, traditional option for many. A mix of two parts orange juice and one part Champagne, can incorporate your favourite Champagne. I like a Champagne that is powerful, elegant, and crisp. Buck’s Fizz can also be purchased ready mixed, in bottles. To accompany turkey, Merlot can be classed as a lighter wine option. Chilean Merlot is wonderful and Clos Apalta Casa Lapostolle is excellent. This dark-coloured production is bold and voluptuous. A great recommendation for a wine to enjoy around the Christmas table. Goose has a stronger flavour than turkey and Pinot Noir makes a splendid accompaniment. Villa Maria Reserve Marlborough, from New Zealand, pairs well with the rich flavours of goose. The complex palate is well-balanced for this wine, which is regularly chosen as a pairing for this dish.

Cherry Brandy Liqueur, having grand notes of maraschino cherries and fresh morella, is also splendid by itself. The Grant’s production (a favourite tipple of Queen Victoria, I am By Trevor Langle informed), makes y a brilliant tasting addition to a rich and fruity Christmas punch, as well as being a fabulous pairing with Christmas pudding. Port is a trusted favourite, for ending a meal, particularly with cheeses. A favourite of mine is Graham’s. The deep ruby-red colour entices to the dark, fruity bouquet, which furthers the enjoyment for the mouthfeel and palate, with a long finish. We cannot forget Santa, of course! A good idea (in my opinion) is to leave a very acceptable sherry for Santa – and his grown-up helpers! Fernando de Castilla Classic Pedro Ximenez I find to be a sherry that goes on pleasing. Big on flavour and sweetness, this is very good and elegant. I know, I know, it’s that time of year again. But, if it works, it works! I hope you have a wonderful time and enjoy the drinks (if you wish to) that suit you. Merry Christmas! As always... Enjoy!

Introducing...

I

George Sharpe

for your Domestic Plumbing Maintenance

moved to Bourne three years ago with my partner and two young children and am so happy that we chose this town for our family home. Its ‘community feel’ is what attracted us to the area and a huge part of my decision to finally take the leap from working for a large company, with over fifteen years of experience, to starting up my own plumbing business.

My aim is to deliver a friendly, professional service as a trustworthy plumber who the local community can call upon; this includes a 24/7 emergency call-out service to provide support when it is most needed.

I am NVQ qualified with experience in fitting, maintaining and repairing all types of plumbing work, such as pipes, valves, taps, toilets, water heaters and pumps. I take pride in the quality of my work and offer an honest and professional service every time. Dripping tap been annoying you for a while now? Radiator not getting hot? Toilet not flushing properly? Please get in touch to discuss all your plumbing needs. No job is too small! You can find me on @G.SharpePlumbing Maintenance, where you can read my customer reviews. I look forward to meeting you soon.”

At this time of year, the elements can take their toll on the home; we can expect gusty winds and heavy rain to play havoc when it comes to guttering, roof tiles, 15:38 fences and even trees. But it is also a popular time for rogue doorstep traders to inflict their own kind of winter misery on unsuspecting homeowners. Trading Standards always advise to never accept an offer of work from cold callers who “happen to be in your area”. They will ask for cash up front, and it could well be for work which may be unnecessary, expensive, and sub-standard. Don’t be fooled by business cards with websites and telephone numbers which look genuine. Politely take the card and say you will contact them at your convenience, should you need their services. Also be very wary of leaflets – do your research first by checking their contact details or ask a family member or friend to do so on your behalf. However, here are some simple but effective steps to take to winterproof your home and garden, and avoid a November nightmare: • The hot weather in the summer can cause uPVC doors and windows to expand and become misaligned. Check to ensure that you do not have any drafts, as a properly insulated home is an absolute must, especially with the increase in energy prices. • Check all external pipes for breaks, leaks, and blockages including the insulation cladding around your boiler. Blocked or leaking pipes can freeze during the cold months, then expand and burst, causing potentially expensive water damage. • Bleed your radiators to warm your property more efficiently. • Get a boiler service from a professional. • Clear out your gutters. Consider investing in gutter leaf guards to help prevent your gutters becoming blocked in future. So, for all those winter maintenance jobs, www.safelocaltrades.com should be your first port of call. With over seventy different categories, we have a range of local professional, recommended, and reliable tradespeople to call upon.

Remembering

THE FALLEN Remembrance Sunday, which falls on November 14th this year, is a national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have defended our freedoms and protected our way of life.

W

e remember the Armed Forces, and their families, from Britain and the Commonwealth, the vital role played by the emergency services and those who have lost their lives as a result of conflict or terrorism.

National Service of Remembrance at the Cenotaph The National Service of Remembrance, held at The Cenotaph in Whitehall on Remembrance Sunday, provides the nation with a physical reminder of all those who have served and sacrificed, with British and Commonwealth soldiers, sailors, airmen and women represented, together with members of the emergency services and civilians. It is expected that Prince William and Prince Harry will be laying wreaths on behalf of HM The Queen, alongside Members of the Cabinet, Opposition Party leaders, former Prime Ministers, the Mayor of London and other ministers. Representatives of the Armed Forces, Fishing Fleets and Merchant Air and Navy will be there, as well as faith communities and High Commissioners of Commonwealth countries.

The Festival of Remembrance Every year the Royal British Legion hosts the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, a commemorative event dedicated to all those who have served and sacrificed from Britain and the Commonwealth. To mark

one hundred years since the collective national Remembrance traditions came together for the first time, we will be remembering the military and civilian, the old and young, and the British and Commonwealth men and women who have fought wars, disasters and pandemics to protect and defend Britain. This year, the RBL are working towards a fully realised Festival of Remembrance, which will be held on Saturday November 13th, with performances at 2pm and 7pm.

Poppy Appeal 2021 This year's Poppy Appeal launches on Thursday October 28th, with several ways to donate, including cash, contactless, text, or online via a QR code quick link. Every poppy makes a difference to the lives of our Armed Forces community. The RBL collectors have been at the heart of the Poppy Appeal for one hundred years, and as COVID-19 restrictions ease, they are back in local communities to raise vital funds for the Armed Forces community. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” (from “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon)

Liberty Partnership are delighted to launch

‘The Liberty Lunch’ to celebrate our community champions and those people that go the extra mile

BY RICHARD ASH CHARTERED FINANCIAL PLANNER AND DIRECTOR You may know one of those ‘champions’ who always helps where they can or goes that extra mile for a neighbour, a stranger or a friend, and if you do then we would like to hear from you. Our plan is to offer a modest reward of lunch out at a local pub, diner, coffee shop or eatery up to the value of £100. We would ask that this offer is taken up locally to support our fantastic local businesses. We will select a monthly ‘champion’ from any nominations we receive. When contacting us, we would ask that you say who they are, how you feel they have positively contributed towards our community, and provide their contact information, having asked their permission to do so. Please see this as being a good thing, something to celebrate, a way in which we at Liberty Partnership can celebrate our community. Sadly, we will not be able to recognise everyone, which we hope you all understand.

To make a nomination

Please e-mail us at: thelibertylunch@liberty-partnership.co.uk or write to us or drop a note through our door to: 104 Church Street, Market Deeping, Peterborough, PE6 8AL.

Property News

PROPERTY MARKET LOOKING GOOD Make the most of it with Newton Fallowell BY JASON TREADWELL, MANAGING DIRECTOR

T

he property market continues to ride the wave as we head into autumn. Buyer demand per property is more than double pre-pandemic levels. There has been a 14% increase in new listings, but the number of available properties for sale remains low and competition for properties remains strong. 37% of properties sold recently sold for above their initial asking price, with an estimated nineteen buyers per available property currently on the market (Propertymark).

First-time buyers, cash buyers or those buyers who are already sold subject to contract are in the best position to benefit from current market conditions. Here at Newton Fallowell, we are selling many properties before they even reach the online portals. To ensure that you are hearing of new properties coming to the market first, make sure your details and requirements are registered with our team, who will be able to call you about new properties before they hit the online portals! Register your details with Bourne’s Number One Agent by calling 01778 422567.

Mortgage Advice

Buying and Selling:

Your Step-by-Step Guide from Agentis

S

ADVICE FROM LUCA PALUMBO, MORTGAGE & PROTECTION CONSULTANT

elling is a stressful time; we all know that! The process can be as daunting as when you bought your home. If you’re selling and, at the same time, buying another property, it can be even more stressful and complicated.

Once you have had your offer on your new home accepted, it’s a moment for celebration. But it’s not the end of your property journey. There are still several stages to complete before you’re the owner of your new home.

1

Appoint Your Solicitor. If you have not already appointed a solicitor to carry out the conveyancing of your property purchase, do so as quickly as possible to keep the transaction moving. You’ll usually pay a deposit for the conveyancing fees, or you might pay a percentage upfront.

2

Secure Your Offer in Principle. If you’ve already received an Agreement in Principle from your chosen mortgage provider, you’ll need to transfer this to an Offer in Principle. This is a confirmation of the exact amount the mortgage provider will be lending you. To obtain this, you’ll need to provide your ID, proof of income (for example, three months of bank statements and a P60), deposit details, your solicitor’s details, and the property details. Your mortgage provider will run a full credit check (also known as a hard enquiry) on you, and your partner if you are buying as a couple.

3

Await the Property Valuation. Your mortgage provider will arrange for a property valuation from a surveyor before they’ll approve your mortgage application. This usually takes about two weeks, and costs between £150 and £1,500 (though this can typically be included in the total mortgage fees you pay).

4 5 6

Provide Additional Documentation. It’s not unusual for a mortgage provider to request additional documents before finalising the loan arrangements. They might want to see your passport, payslips, or bank statements. Receive a Formal Mortgage Offer. Once your mortgage provider is satisfied that you can afford the mortgage you’ve applied for, they’ll make you a formal, signed offer through your solicitor. This can take up to around three weeks. Sign the Contracts. Your solicitor will invite you to sign the contracts for the property sale and exchange them with the seller’s solicitor.

*Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage*

Healthcare

Late Diagnosis Costs Livelihoods and Lives!

Nick Rossington, Director of Resurgam Health Ltd, Appointed Representative of WPA Healthcare Practice Plc.

I

t was the late diagnosis of our elevenyear-old daughter’s bone cancer in February 2017, following twenty-three fruitless appointments over a six-month period, that prompted a desire to help people have a choice in their medical provision. We didn’t have health insurance at the time, but it was only when we were at our wits’ end and decided to take Alice for a private consultation that her disease was diagnosed.

Thankfully, following eight months of chemotherapy treatment and limb salvage surgery on the NHS, Alice is doing well and enjoying being back at school. However, the whole experience brought home to me, first-hand, how devastating a late diagnosis and delayed treatment can be – and how it can cost livelihoods, and lives! My daughter’s chances of having osteosarcoma were one in three million. There is a chance, therefore, that any of us can suffer from an illness at any time. We learned that an early diagnosis and prompt treatment in a hospital of your choice is what having health insurance gives you. Following a career in financial services, I became a local Appointed Representative of WPA

Healthcare Practice Plc in September 2018. As a Healthcare Partner, I provide advice on WPA Health Insurance Policies only, and how they can protect your family and business. After all, we insure our houses and cars, but aren’t our lives, and livelihoods more important? For individuals/families, having private medical insurance gives you the confidence of having access to an early specialist consultation, or where required, prompt treatment. Most importantly, you give yourselves the best chance of being treated as soon as possible. For businesses, our Enterprise Flexible Benefits product provides access to prompt private hospital and specialist treatment for the business owner and employees, thereby looking to improve employee productivity and reducing staff absenteeism due to ill-health. Whether you are interested in family or business private medical insurance, please contact me to discuss your options further. Please note, preexisting and long-term medical conditions are generally not covered. Applications are subject to medical underwriting and a maximum joining age applies on some policies.”

Will & Probate Services

2021: The Year to Protect You and Your Family

ADVICE FROM NICK ASH, MANAGING DIRECTOR WILL AND PROBATE SERVICES

“But I Am Different…”

I

write my articles every month and, on a fairly regular basis, people come up to me and say they enjoy them; some even say they read them every month! Many people will have constructive criticism; some may well ask a question. But invariably, the conversation will end with, “but of course that doesn’t apply to me I am different.”

Different how? The only people who will never need what we do are those of us who are immortal and, whilst I have read books that suggest they move amongst us (and even met a few who act as if they are!) I have never knowingly met an immortal! But still the comment comes:

● “I am different; I am single with no kids” – great:

do you want your parents to inherit everything you have? If not, make a will.

● “I am different; my kids don’t live with me, but

my partner’s do” – who owns your house? What provision do you want to make for your partner? How will you be sure that your kids get what is rightfully theirs?

● “I’m different; it is just me and the wife” – that’s

all well and good whilst you are both alive, but what happens when you both die? Perhaps more importantly, what happens if you can’t make decisions for yourself? You assume that your wife gets to make them, but she doesn’t automatically. Take some steps to protect yourselves!

● “I’m different; I have a normal family; they will sort

it out when I am gone” – In sixteen years, I have

never met a “normal” family; they are just as rare as the ‘immortals’. What I have met are dozens of families that fell apart when their parents died, leading to bickering, long-held resentments, and arguments about inheritance that ruined relationships. There is truth in “I am different” - Lord knows, I am very different from most of my friends, clients, and my staff and, because of that, we treat everyone as an individual. We listen to your story, address your fears and needs, and come up with a bespoke set of documents that suit you and your circumstances. Yes, it might be that everyone ends up with a will and Lasting Powers of Attorney, but you can rest assured that they will be exclusive to you, because you are different. Celebrate your difference by giving us a call on 01778 252301 and we will get you booked in with one of our consultants.

Alto Electrical Want to Sort Out Your Sockets!

D

BY COLEEN EVERITT, ALTO ELECTRICAL LIMITED

id you know that we have the safest electrical sockets in the world, right here in the UK? Since the mid-1900s we have had unparalleled, pioneering, electrical socket designs in this country. If you look inside the terminals of your sockets, you will notice that you can only actually see into the top terminal; this is the ‘Earth’. Inside, you’ll see a lever and if you were to push a plug in, this would activate two shutters that close the entrance to the ‘Live’ and ‘Neutral’, opening them to allow a plug to enter. We have absolutely no need for “safety socket covers” here, and in fact, these bypass the shutters, a fundamental safety feature of the world-leading design. Even after years of educating people, I still regularly discover these little plastic contraptions everywhere, be it in homes or commercial premises (even in our very own town). What people don’t understand is that there is no British Standard for these, which means they’re completely unregulated and can even make the socket more unsafe. Some are not the right size; this can cause damage to the shutters and sometimes even the terminals inside. If they are oversized, this can make them loose which can cause the connection to be poor and cause them to overheat, sometimes even scorching or melting the socket, or sometimes cracking the plate. Sometimes, the back of the

Domestic

socket cover can be flexible; this can allow it to be put in upside-down, and in fact that acts like a tool to open the terminals and exposing the live parts. By introducing an unnecessary element to the socket, you can potentially create a bridge. If you were to spill a drink on a normal socket with nothing in, it’s very unlikely that the drink will be able to get in as the shutters will stop it. However, if you were to spill a drink on a socket cover, there is more potential for the liquid to get into the socket. I would really like to make the sockets in this town safer, so if you and your children send your disused (hopefully) socket covers to us in the post, with a little letter telling us that they promise not to play with sockets, then we will send back a little gift to thank them for being so sensible. Happy Clients Issue Wonderful Words for Winkworth! From the offset of our sale, Adam showed such passion for his work, and we were instantly captivated by his exceptional rapport, and the valuation was by far the most accurate against competitors. We truly feel he was a pivotal cog in the wheel in the sale of our house. The transition of the process to his colleague Millie, once a sale had been agreed, was smooth and seamless; we felt comfortable and well prepared for the next stage. Millie has been a fantastic support and made us feel so valued. Like Adam, she has always been contactable and her attention to detail is second to none. Her ability to foresee future situations and talk through all options available methodically and calmly made her our most trusted ally, and this is a very rare and precious skill set within this industry. Millie is such an asset to your team! Charlotte is an extremely bright and bubbly character and was always a welcome voice to answer the phone. She has maintained professionalism throughout; you’d never know she hasn’t been doing this for years. Winkworth have been our shining light and nothing short of excellent.” I can’t thank the team enough, particularly Millie and Adam! I’d had my house on the market for a couple of months elsewhere and had no viewings and was feeling a bit in the dark! I took the decision to call Winkworth for advice…they took me under their wing, and I subsequently had viewings set up the following week and, with their proactive approach, my house had sold in weeks! Such an approachable team, who showed empathy and patience under what was personally a stressful time, made much less stressful thanks to you guys! We are now settled in our new home and wouldn’t be here without you!” The whole team was very knowledgeable and professional throughout the process. I would and already have recommended you and would definitely use you again!” We would recommend you as we were thoroughly impressed with the service and knowledge your whole team provided.” The team at Winkworth were so professional and knowledgeable, the service we received throughout our transaction was amazing! Thank you so much for all your patience, cheerfulness and professionalism” Millie is an absolute star! Nothing was too much trouble for her and if she didn’t know the answer to something she would find out and come back to me as soon as she could. She was supportive and encouraging throughout and I am sure that her charming persistency and creative approach made all the difference to the process. We are very grateful to her and the whole team, we would recommend them to anyone without hesitation!” Given a challenging transaction the whole team were superb throughout. We are over the moon with the service that we received!” I can highly recommend Adam and his team; my sale was less than straightforward, and Adam handled it all in his stride, keeping me updated throughout and reassuring me. An amazing service.”

The Season of Goodwill?

Divorce Can Be Less Difficult

I

t may be hard for many to accept, but dealing with the fallout from the breakdown of a marriage, or indeed a cohabitation split, can be made less painful, complex, and costly if the couple chooses the route of dispute resolution. Recent research by national law firm, Irwin Mitchell, who surveyed a thousand divorces, revealed that 39% of spouses were not aware of ADR (alternative dispute resolution) at the time of their divorce, and 35% were not offered it as an alternative way to the traditional Court proceedings route.

The most challenging part of the divorce is the financial arrangements for which mediation and/or arbitration can help to provide a much quicker financial outcome, and thereby, a significant saving of cost. It’s just as important to note that the emotional cost of the divorce process can be as high as the financial one and ADR will certainly reduce conflict. If you are about to embark on divorce proceedings or are already embroiled in what seems to be an unnecessarily adversarial process, ask your Family Law specialist about ADR and whether mediation/collaboration/ arbitration could be suitable for your case. Wishing you all the compliments of the season!

Mayor

Words from the Mayor

COUNCILLOR PAUL FELLOWS

A massive thank you and ‘big up’ for our Town Clerk, Ian Sismey, who has been a driving force behind many projects in Bourne.

O

ne that all of us will have particularly noticed this year is the fabulous display of hanging baskets and decorated flower beds at the four main road entrances into Bourne. They have been, and continue to be, an absolute delight.

The superb quality of these floral ‘sculptures’ is solely down to the expertise of the one-and-only Bill Pauley. He will not thank me for calling him a “Bourne institution” but, sorry Bill, you probably are! Bill is also the drumming foundation of “Totally Anchored”, the “Saga louts” of Bourne’s ever-present music scene. They are not only playing during the two-hundred-year anniversary of The Old Town Hall, but also at this year’s Civic Dinner. (Please check out details for both events.)

The Anchor pub in Eastgate is the “home” of the aforementioned group of music reprobates and I was amazed to see a small jetty constructed at the pub into the river, which is an exciting development in one of the oldest parts of Bourne. A walk down there is well worth the effort and, as we move through autumn, I know many of you will be enjoying the varied aspects of our town, along with all the wonderful colours of this season. November will kick off with what will sadly be the town’s last bonfire and firework display at its present site off Manning Road, and it’s appropriate to thank all of those who, down the years, have enabled this fantastic display to take place. Please support it if you can. The month ends with the iconic Christmas Fayre and Lights Switch On. I know I’ll see you there. I’ll be the bloke at the front, behind the big, shiny necklace! 72

Council News

“In Bloom 2021”

A

ugust saw the judging of the East Midlands in Bloom Competition. Bourne’s entry is made and managed by the Town Council and, as I am sure, all of you will have seen the rejuvenated planters at the entrances from all four directions into the town. The planters sponsored by the Len Pick Trust are hopefully a welcome sight for visitors and local residents too. The town centre has been ablaze with colour as our hanging baskets and displays have been better than ever before, bringing a smile to our everyday lives. Skilfully maintained by local resident and horticulturist, Bill Pauley, I am sure that they will remain colourful for several more weeks. Highlights also included a visit to the newly installed ‘BRM’ memorial garden in South Road, an idea conceived and implemented by the ‘Len Pick Trust’. All in all, the judges were well impressed by all that they saw on the day and resulted in a magnificent Silver Gilt Award at the presentation event at Grimsby. A special award was given to the ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ team for the amazing work carried out for the health and wellbeing of the community.

Community Cleaner

I

am sure that everyone will have seen our Community Cleaner hard at work. An initiative set up by Bourne Town Council almost a year ago now sees Dave Atter patrolling the streets on a daily basis. Rain or shine, Dave can be seen cheerfully going about his work, keeping the town centre streets clear of litter and other debris. Even amidst the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic, Dave continued to go about his work, often going above and beyond the call of duty, to keep the town looking at its best.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations will take place next June and preparations are already underway to shape how Bourne will celebrate this momentous occasion. Street parties, parades and dances are just a few of the current ideas being discussed. The Town Council has organised a town-wide meeting to take place at the Old Town Hall on Tuesday November 2nd at 6.00pm to bring all interested parties together to discuss this event.
