Introduction

Welcome to Your June Issue. June 16th, and Father’s Day will be upon us again, so just a little reminder for you all to show him just how much he means to you! Why not start by helping him win the competition in this month’s edition which has a “fatherly feel” to it … (if more clues were needed)? The highlight of June of course is not just Father’s Day, but the fact that, on that day the fantastic Bourne Classic Car and Bike Carnival will be held, bigger, busier and brighter than ever before. Please come and enjoy what looks like being a brilliant day out for everyone. Finally, my love and Happy Father’s Day greetings go to my dad, Bill, and husband, Chris.

Claire x

Our June issue has its usual cornucopia of features to dip into and enjoy, as the summer arrives. I hope there’s something for everyone. As some of our offspring face their final school exams this year, we wish good luck to all of our GCSE and A Level students in the area. It will all be worth it in the long run – honestly! Just think of all that debt you’ll soon be able to rack up at university! And finally, as June sees the Schwarz offspring’s first foray into the wonderful institution of marriage, (when our eldest son Rob and Jade tie the knot), let me share some lines from the inimitable John Cooper Clarke, spotted recently in Stamford - “It all starts off with hearts and diamonds, but before too long you’re thinking clubs and spades.” (Surely not, unless of course he means clubs to join, as a loving couple, and spades to dig your garden with … together!) Enjoy the read!

Father’s Day Special

Many of us will be familiar with the irrepressible Dominic Brister, for his musical prowess, singing regularly in the Masons Arms in Bourne, and sharing the stage at last year’s Car Show and Christmas Fayre and Lights switch-on with his son Alfie. In a recent conversation with this 39-year-old, local schoolteacher (Stamford Welland Academy for fifteen years, as PE teacher and ‘Parallel Curriculum Leader’), it soon became clear how important he sees his role as father, step-father, and son of Peter, “a legend amongst educators having worked with King’s School in Grantham for over forty years.” As Dom explains, “Peter has given me what it means to be a dad, and if I can be half as good, I’ll be proud. Father’s Day is every minute of every day! Even when I was living in New Zealand for six years, I knew the support was there.” Besides teaching, Dom and wife Nicola have also been building the Don’t Lose Hope Cafe and counselling rooms in Bourne Market Place, and look forward to watching the charity grow.  6

When asked, “What makes a good father?” Dom replied, “All I am trying to do is provide my time and effort to support Alfie and the girls, step-daughters, Gracie (19) and Phoebe (16). I have never felt more proud of the girls than I do, watching them grow into the amazing young ladies they are. As a ‘distant dad’ (Alfie lives with his mum in Grantham), I do my best to make sure that he knows that wherever he is, I can be there for him, whenever he needs me.” june 2019

What Do We Offer? The Art of Tactical Parenting offers Antenatal Workshops which strive to provide a realistic and informative understanding of your journey into new parenthood and beyond. We offer the support and networking opportunities that will be invaluable to new parents.

What Is Tactical Parenting? We believe in supporting women and their families in researching their options, so that they can make informed, confident decisions. We are passionate about providing families with the confidence to cope, if plans go awry. Whilst we all aim to parent to the best of our ability, we also appreciate that, as parents, a hack or shortcut can be a way of surviving the day. It is about parenting to the best of your ability, but also recognising our limits.

About Us With our babies being the focal point of our lives, we, (Vicky and George) came to the realisation that antenatal provision in our area was sadly lacking. As a team, we have a great deal to offer. Most importantly, we are mothers ourselves. However, as we both have a background as fully qualified teachers, we share an implicit understanding - and between us over sixteen years of knowledge - in relation to children and their development. Furthermore, between us we have a variety of birth and feeding experiences. We have also discovered that sharing differing parenting philosophies doesn’t prevent us from being able to respect each other’s choices and remaining close friends. We therefore applied and were accepted on a FEDANT approved training course in order to gain the qualifications we needed to be able to pass our passion, experience and knowledge onto other families.

Why choose The Art of Tactical Parenting? The main focus of the course is on helping you to develop and understand your own parenting style. We will cover all of the key skills required to care 8

for your new baby, but at the heart of our course is the importance of maintaining a sense of your own identity, self and values, whilst finding your new normal. The Art of Tactical Parenting will provide you with the confidence to parent in the way that you feel is natural, and to make the decisions that you feel are right for you, your child and your family. From choosing cloth or disposable nappies, to choosing a sling or a pushchair, we are there to provide you with the support, knowledge and guidance you need.

How much does it cost? £190 for a five-week course. You may bring with you one extra person, free of charge (this may be your spouse, partner, relation or birthing partner). There is an optional £20 charge if you would like refreshments included in your sessions, but these can also be purchased from the venue on the day.

When are the workshops? Workshops currently take place on Wednesday evenings. There is a choice of two timeslots available: • 6pm-7.45pm (including 15 minute coffee break). • 8pm - 9.45pm (including 15 minute coffee break).

When can I book? Workshops will begin in September 2019 and can be booked at any time during your pregnancy, as long as you are 26 weeks pregnant at the time of participating in the workshop.

Where are the workshops? Workshops take place at Toft Country House Hotel, near Bourne. PE10 0JT.

A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

by Claire Saunders, Renu - Health, Beauty & Fitness

J

une is one of my favourite months of the year. It hosts the longest day, an abundance of summer blooms in the garden, my personal birthday and it is also another birthday for Renu.

enjoying the benefits of an aromatherapy product at home or simply socialising with others in a friendly, nonintimidating environment, we offer you a space to find what you need and deserve.

It seems incredible that it is now thirteen years since I launched Renu in West Street, Bourne. I have seen many changes, including our move of premises to the former Marquis of Granby on Abbey Road, but our business model remains the same : a haven of wellbeing where you can relax the mind, tone the body and lift the spirits.

Of course, no business survives without a strong team and a loyal customer base. I have been fortunate to have both, and I would like to personally thank our customers, both old and new, for their continued support and encouragement.

When I started the business thirteen years ago, the biggest health concerns were things such as heart conditions and cancer. Whilst these are still very high on the agenda, depression, stress and anxiety are now equally high and becoming the foremost reason for absence from work. Taking care of your health and wellbeing has never been more important. Whether it is a relaxing treatment, a dance class, gym session, a yoga or Pilates class,

With this in mind, we would like to invite you to our birthday celebrations on THURSDAY JUNE 20th when we will be serving strawberries and Prosecco, whilst offering taster treatments, talks and demonstrations, free spin classes, a prize draw and some very special offers on the day. If you would like a tour of the building or simply enjoy a glass of fizz with us, please pop in anytime on the day. If you would like to book a taster treatment, please contact our reception on 01778 423923, or find full details of the event on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Claire and the Renu Team would like to invite you for Prosecco and Strawberries to celebrate our 13th anniversary on Thursday June 20th , 9.30am – 8.30pm. Free spin classes available all day, taster treatments, free prize draw, talks and demonstrations, very special offers (only available on the day).

Julie Manning could be the answer, with her comfortable “homefrom-home environment” and a very small adult to child ratio. Julie operates a free flow setting arrangement, from a cosy indoors to a fully enclosed garden, where her “busy little bees” can let their imaginations run wild and get their hands messy! She is passionate about using natural and recyclable resources and teaching children about the importance of the world and the environment. Her planning and setting is based on the ‘Forest School’ ethos, with ‘The Curiosity Approach’ and a touch of ‘Montessori’ teachings for good measure! In short, Julie follows the EYFS curriculum and can offer the 15/30 hours funding in the same way as a nursery can. Julie’s qualifications include “Level 3 Childcare and Education”, “Level 2 Safeguarding”,

Let Cherryholt Mobility and Cycles Keep You On the Move!

Sometimes a successful business can look back at its roots and see a curious development over time, growing in one direction and then maybe seeing an opening in the market for a specific service or product, which soon pushes that business forward to bigger and better things. I was reminded of this on my recent visit to Cherryholt Mobility and Cycles on Cherry Holt Road in Bourne, where Terri Buffery is the manager of this family-run business.

She explained how, in 2005, her father, Steve Buffery, whose Lincolnshire Bow window business was already established on the site, decided to take on the neighbouring cycle repair business, whose owner, Tony Bills, was retiring. There followed a brief residency on North Street as a mobility, cycle repair and sales operation, but the Buffery family soon saw the good sense to move to their present premises, adjoining the Lincolnshire Bow showroom on Cherry Holt Road. It was at this point that the idea of offering a mobility scooter and appliances service made perfect sense, seeing the increase in their popularity, allied to the changing demographic of Bourne over the last two decades. An instant market, it appeared, was waiting and since then, the sales and servicing business has gone from strength to strength. The most recent addition, Terri was proud to explain, has been the breakdown service now available for mobility scooters. A specially equipped van, complete with ramp, can now “rescue the scooter with its stranded owner.

Cherryholt Mobility is about more than scooters, however, and everyone in the team has specialist experience and knowledge to impart. For example, stair lifts can be installed through the firm. Steve Buffery oversees the project, from advising and surveying through to installation by the manufacturers. His wife Anita, meanwhile, specialises in the provision of a wide range of incontinence products and home appliances for the less mobile. Terri’s particular passion is for the advising and providing “Sandpiper” footwear for customers with problem feet. Terri’s relaxed, confidential and friendly attitude, so important when dealing with diminished mobility, is evident in all teammembers. Hayley Rainbow, whose mother has disability issues, is the wheelchair and rollator expert, and is able to offer that crucial empathic response to the public. John Cree, meanwhile, brings a decade of experience to his role of mobility scooter and car hoist technician. The Cherry Holt Road location offers plenty of space, not just for car parking and the large showroom with its wide assembly of scooters and other appliances. It can also serve as a safe testing site for customers wishing to test-drive their new “pride and joy.” There are sometimes preused scooters and rollators for sale, and Terri tries to keep prices at a competitive level across all sections of this thriving business. Sports Performance and Mental Imagery Imagine that, by just thinking about exercise, it strengthens your muscles, even if you don’t move an inch. But this is true; mental imagery not only activates the same brain regions as the actual movement, but can also speed up the learning of a new skill. Visualisation, or mental imagery, is a technique used by sports hypnotherapists and psychologists for years to improve athletic performance in the game. Successful golfers, tennis players, athletes, footballers, boxers and many others agree that this technique gives them the competitive edge, mental awareness, motivation and confidence to succeed. “Strengthen your game by just using your imagination” Visualisation and rehearsal strengthens muscles, so by imagining you’re lifting weights in the gym, this can increase muscle strength by up to half as much as if you’re actually really doing it. It does this by sending electrical signals to the muscles, making them stronger. So you don’t have to move; it just happens by thinking about it. We can imagine both internally and externally (third person view), but by imagining internally it can also create physiological responses such as changes in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. It can reinforce the circuits in our brain, sending stronger signals to target muscles. Mental imagery can be used with other things too, such as

professional musicians who rehearse difficult parts of a musical piece by performing the music in their mind. It is thought that mental rehearsal triggers the same motor, somatosensory, auditory, and emotional circuits as playing the real instrument. Scientists say that mental training with no physical exercise can help improve voluntary muscle strength. This could help with rehabilitation for people who find it difficult or unsafe to participate in strength training; by learning to use their mind, they may now be able to strengthen their muscles. Mental imagery is an easy way to help preserve and improve performance alongside physical practice, exercise, or getting out in your sport or specialism. And it is important to keep in mind that, like the real thing, mental training needs to be intensive and repeated, over and over again, to work. Hypnotherapy can help to achieve focus and visualisation to achieve your goals. Golfer, Jack Nicklaus once said, “I never hit a shot, not even in practice, without having a very sharp, in-focus picture of it in my head. First I see the ball where I want it to finish, nice and white and sitting up high on the bright green grass. Then the scene quickly changes, and I see the ball going there; its path, trajectory, and shape, even its behaviour on landing.”

Gerbera Beauty & Training School – Happy First Anniversary! Gerbera Beauty and Training School on North Street in Bourne is one year old this month, and the owner, Jane Rawlinson-Falla here describes how the last twelve months have gone and what the future has in store. “Where has the year gone?” I ask myself. It’s been such an exciting year for Gerbera Beauty and Training School, such a huge learning curve for me, personally and professionally.  I am absolutely thrilled with the growing success of our Training School which I hope continues to flourish. We have, so far, completed and passed eleven students since opening, and they have all been successful in passing their Beauty Therapy Courses, ranging from ‘Intensive Body Massage’ through to ‘Gel Polish Training’. The training and education part of my role will always have a special place in my heart. I am therefore the Head Trainer at the Training School who plans, organises and teaches the short, beauty courses on a monthly basis, as well as carrying out beauty treatments. Please do check out our recent reviews on our Facebook page for our trainees’ experience with us.  I have to also say a huge thank you to Gerbera Beauty’s regular clientele for their continued support and custom, and also to our new clients.  As a newer business in Bourne, we realise that providing the best beauty treatment possible, with the utmost care and attention to customer care and service, is paramount and we pride ourselves in this and will continue to do so.

THEN

NOW

On our first birthday, Gerbera Beauty is thrilled to introduce new therapist, Sophie Day, to the team, and she will start carrying out beauty treatments alongside myself on a parttime basis at the beginning of this month. Sophie joins Gerbera Beauty with a wealth of experience in customer service and with ‘Distinction’ achieved in her qualifications. To celebrate Gerbera Beauty’s first birthday, Sophie, Thalia (our Saturday receptionist), and myself will be hosting an Open House Event on Tuesday June 25th, from 10am to 6pm. Bucks Fizz and birthday cake will be served, complimentary taster treatments will be available throughout the day, free three minutes trial in our fabulous Tanning Pod, and there will also be a competition and raffle prize. We look forward to seeing you on the 25th!  Thank you.”

What is Osteopathy? - Your Questions Answered

O

steopathy is a primary health care profession that focuses on how the body’s various joints, muscles, fascia, ligaments, tendons and bones (collectively termed ‘musculoskeletal’) work and how to fix them when they’re injured causing pain. After taking a history and a physical examination, osteopaths will diagnose the problem, look at treatment options and ways to prevent and rehabilitate as needed.

What do osteopaths treat? Commonly treated conditions can include back and neck pain, postural-related problems; for example due to poor workstation set-up or even an uncomfortable car seat, sporting injuries, issues related to muscle and joint ‘wear and tear’, and the sense of feeling stiff in areas of the body. Patients come with acute pain that began very suddenly and is sharp with spasm, or with problems that have been building for weeks or months and have just got worse recently, or are simply not going away. What is the difference between an osteopath / chiropractor and a physiotherapist? Essentially, very little. We treat a similar range of problems but with our own particular approach to get you fixed and pain-free again. With such an overlap, the decision of who to see for your particular problem is difficult. More often than not, the decision is made through a form of word of mouth recommendation, and we find over 80% of our new patients find us this way. When will I be seen? The key is ‘ASAP’! We aim to find appointments within forty-eight hours and will do our best to fit you in. First osteopathic appointments can last up to an hour, allowing time for us to take a full medical history, a physical examination and treatment too. Follow-up sessions are up to thirty minutes and, after a brief update, will consist mainly of treatment. Who will see me? We currently have three osteopathic practitioners and, between us, we offer day, evening and Saturday appointments. All the osteopaths are fully qualified and registered with the General Osteopathic Council. What does treatment consist of? Treatment is ‘hands-on’, consisting mainly of soft tissue massage, articulation (a gentle movement of the joints) and occasionally manipulation. This restores the movement of a restricted joint, improving its ability to move and in turn relax

and decongest the local muscles of toxins and metabolites which can cause pain. Manipulation, or ‘joint clicking’, is just another treatment technique that osteopaths sometimes use. Manipulation itself is not generally painful and is usually used in small quantities in a focused manner. We always discuss with our patients our treatment plan and, should a patient feel uncomfortable with any part of it, there are always alternatives. We generally don’t use machines or rely purely on exercise prescription. Do I need a GP referral to see an osteopath? No, you do not need to be referred directly by your GP. Some GPs do suggest us to their patients though and we would encourage you to keep your GP informed, to keep your medical records up-to-date. Most patients ‘self-refer’ to an osteopath for treatment, either through ‘word of mouth’ recommendations or after trying other forms of physical therapy. How do I know if an osteopath is registered? All osteopaths must be registered with the General Osteopathic Council. Their job is to protect you, the public. The title ‘osteopath’ is protected by law, and only those included on the Register are entitled to practise as osteopaths. Unregistered practice is a criminal offence in the UK.

Concerns Over Wills and Estates We have recently become concerned that unknown parties have been in the area purporting to offer “services in advising and preparing wills or will trusts”. One of these persons was approaching individuals in the street. Anyone wanting to protect their wishes upon their death should seek advice from a firm of solicitors of their choice. In doing this, they can be sure that they are speaking to appropriately qualified staff who are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and who are also insured. Everyone needs to remain safe in relation to these matters and not feel in any way pressured. Wills are a very good way of ensuring that our wishes are met rather than relying on the Law of Intestacy which does not always do what a person wants. Furthermore, the will can also assist with property rights. Another issue recently causing concern is the attempt by the government to increase the fees payable to the probate

registry on applying for probate when a person has died. It looks like the proposed increase from £215 (where a person acts on their own, but £155 in a case where a solicitor is appointed) will be rising dramatically. This had been proposed to happen a few weeks ago, but was paused as parliament “was busy with other matters” and a government motion could not be passed.

Although there will now be no fee charged up to an estate valued at up to £50,000, from over that figure up to £300,000 the fee becomes £250. Then up to £500,000 the fee becomes £750. From £500,000 to £1,000,000 the fee is £2,500. The maximum fee will be £6,000. There have been frantic efforts to get applications in before the new fee regime commences.

Parkinson’s – Bourne Support Group Parkinson’s is a neurological condition for which there is NO cure yet. Patients survive on a great deal of medication, determination to continue with ‘normal’ daily living, and enthusiasm to enjoy life as much as possible. What we, the general public, take for granted can be an enormous effort for most people with Parkinson’s. We, Parkinson’s UK and the local Bourne Support Group for Parkinson’s, rely on people’s generosity to help raise funds for research for a cure and local support for members. We have received some very generous donations from various prominent groups, individuals and companies within Bourne and the Deepings over the years and these have been much appreciated. The Local Support Group have: Monthly meetings - Last Monday in the month from

10am to 12.30pm. We meet in the Salvation Army Church on Manning Road. Parking is available there and close by in the town centre car park, (only free for 2 hours or less.) We have speakers at most of these meetings. Coffee Mornings - Second Wednesday in the month at Wake House, North Street from 10am to 12 noon. This is very informal chatting, together with a cup of tea/coffee, biscuits/cake for £1. Pilates Exercise - Every Tuesday afternoon at Thurlby Methodist Church Hall, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Monies raised by the Group, besides going for research, goes towards paying for the venues for the monthly meetings, Pilates exercise, outings and coaches with a lift for members in wheelchairs, meals out, and any other reasonable expenses to run the Group.

Our major fund raiser for 2019 is a Table Top Sale with tea/coffee and cake, tombola, etc., in Wake House, North Street, on Saturday October 12th, 10am – 3pm. We welcome anyone at any of our meetings - just turn up and you will be met by one of our members. We are always happy to see you. It is recognised that, upon diagnosis, many patients are in denial. Just remember the old saying, “A problem shared is a problem halved.” By joining the local group, you gain access to help in filling out forms correctly. COME and JOIN US. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain, friends for starters. If you know of anyone with Parkinson’s and who would be interested in joining us, please tell them not to hesitate, and to contact our Group Secretary on 01778 394228.

Local Company Undertakes Charity Electrical Work The vision of the Spalding Boxing Academy was that of the now Head Coach, Stuart Possnett, a local self-employed builder. Stuart found a derelict building in Kellett Gate in Spalding, which was extremely run down. He now rents this building, and has been slowly improving it. More work is still planned but what is more difficult is that Stuart earns no money from the Boxing Club, and all the work he does is voluntary; materials are purchased either by himself or have been donated. Spalding Boxing Club is now a registered charity and hosts approximately seventy children a week. Spalding Boxing Club wanted to add a new area to use as a fitness suite, but had no electricity, so this is where Mane Services Ltd got involved.

Stuart has done for his local community, so it was an easy decision to come to help.” Kevin continues, “I have a network of suppliers, and approached one national supplier and asked if they would be interested in donating the materials required, if I myself donated all of my own time to install for free. Rexel Peterborough’s Manager, Kevin Wallace, gladly agreed and everything was supplied for free.” The new fitness suite is now all powered up and open, which we are all really happy about.

Mane Services Ltd is a small company, based in March, Cambridgeshire. The founder, Kevin Wright, has dedicated a part of this new business to helping those who cannot afford to pay for the labour to do essential works or projects that will benefit the greater community. Kevin says, “Spalding Boxing Academy has been set up by someone with a big heart and I admire what

Councillor Brenda Johnson – Mayor of Bourne 2019-2020 Mother of four and grandmother of seven, Brenda Johnson has lived in the Bourne area for thirty-six years and was Mayor of Bourne in 2011/ 12. Brenda has worked for South Kesteven District Council for twenty-one years, and has been ten years on the Town Council. This very community-minded lady, who acknowledges the support always offered by a “wonderful” husband, has also enjoyed her years of involvement in Dyke Village Hall and as a trustee of the Dimension Skate Park. As Mayor, the Dimension Skate Park will become one of her chosen charities, alongside ‘Little Miracles’ and ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ café.

Hopeful Start For New Bourne Charity ‘Don’t Lose Hope’ hosted an open evening event on Thursday April 25th which was an opportunity for GPs, schools’ staff, town councillors and other members of the community to view the services and facilities the charity has to offer.  The café, located in the former Nat West bank building in Bourne’s Market Place, is now open, serving teas and coffees, home-made cakes and sandwiches.  All the profits from the café will go towards funding the counselling service that operates from the same building.

Stallholders needed! Dyke Village Hall Scarecrow festival are looking for stallholders for this years event which is to be held on Friday 6th, Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September. Please visit their website www. dykevillagehall.org.uk and

including a bar, to make it possible for them to start putting on regular events. This will enable them to raise money for the upkeep of the building, until grants are obtained for major works.

You may (or may not!) be aware of the major project to bring the The Old Town Hall in Bourne Market Place back to its former glory and to convert the internal structure to provide a much-needed arts centre for the town. The trustees will be seeking Heritage Lottery funding, plus many other sources, to provide the £1.8 million needed for the project. However, this is a long-term project and meanwhile, over the past few months, the Shambles (downstairs area) has been undergoing a few changes, 30

D I S C O V E R I N G

For the first major event they have been very lucky indeed to have Eliza Carthy (daughter of Martin Carthy, one of contemporary music’s most influential figures), who is, herself, well known and highly respected in folk music circles. Describing herself simply as a “modern English musician”, Eliza Carthy is one of the most recognisable faces in British folk and in June 2015 she was awarded an MBE in the Queens

Bourne

Honours List, for ‘Services to Folk Music’. Her achievements have been acknowledged with numerous BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, two Mercury Prize nominations, and in 2003 she was the first English traditional musician to be nominated for a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music. Legitimate Ways to Pay Less Inheritance Tax by Adrian Hallas DipPFS, Independent Financial Adviser

I

nheritance Tax planning is essential for anyone with an estate value that could breach the current IHT threshold of £325,000 per person (+ £150,000 if you are leaving your home to direct-line descendants). Let’s take a look at an example: Mary, who is 64, was widowed in 2015. Her husband left £50,000 to each of their two children. Mary owns her home worth £950,000, her business worth £500,000 and a £280,000 ISA. She also has £200,000 in a savings account that she wants to gift to her children. Neither of her children wants to take over the business. In 2019, Mary’s Nil Rate Band (NRB) is £850,000 (£325,000 personal NRB + £225,000 left of husband’s NRB + 2 x £150,000 main residence NRB). The total value of Mary’s estate is £1.93million.

insurance to cover the remaining IHT liability if she dies within the seven year period.

If she does nothing, the IHT bill will be £432,000 (i.e. £1.93 million - £850,000) x 40%.

Mary is a higher rate taxpayer and takes a taxfree income from her ISA. Cashing in this ISA and purchasing an Onshore Investment Bond, would allow her to continue taking an income of up to 5% per year without an immediate tax liability. The bond can be set up so, on Mary’s death, the trustees can assign the bond to the children with no liability to IHT.

She will therefore be leaving the house and £548,000 for her children. So what are her options? Mary could sell her business and then, within three years, take out other investments that qualify for Business Relief. This typically involves investing in the Alternative Investment Market (AIM), which is higher risk than the main stock market, so not suitable for everyone. She would only pay 10% Capital Gains Tax (CGT) on the sale proceeds, as she qualifies for Entrepreneur’s Relief. The AIM shares could pass to her children with no IHT liability.

The remaining IHT payable on Mary’s estate is now £40,000 (i.e. £950,000 - £850,000) x 40%. This way, she will be leaving the house and £890,000 of assets for her children (£980,000 - £50,000 CGT £40,000 IHT)*

If Mary is still alive three years after the £200,000 gift, the IHT liability reduces in steps from 40% to 0% after seven years. She could take out ‘Gift Inter Vivos’ life

As this example shows, IHT planning can be complex but very beneficial. *Discounting insurance premiums, investment gains/ losses, and charges.

Mortgages: One of the Most Important Things to Think About When Moving Home! by Matt Hines, Mortgage Specialist, Newton Fallowell

Over 57% of house purchasers in England used a mortgage to secure their dream home in March 2019. With the housing market in Bourne seeing a high number of sales and a buoyant housing market, it’s never been more important to seek the very best independent advice to guide you through the mortgage maze. As local experts in sales and lettings, Newton Fallowell are now very pleased to have teamed up with Mortgage Advice Bureau who have helped arrange over £12 billion worth of mortgages for clients in England last year. As mortgages are such an integral part of the home buying process, it is key that we are able to offer our clients the very best mortgage advice to make the buying process as easy and affordable as possible. Not just providing an excellent service to home buyers, having an in-house mortgage advisor also offers our home sellers the confidence that when agreeing a sale on their home, the buyer has been checked for their credibility in purchasing, and allows each seller to make an informed decision before accepting an offer. We are very proud to introduce our local mortgage specialist, Matt Hines, who brings a wealth of knowledge of the entire mortgage market, and who is able to offer

clients complete access to over ninety-five lenders. This, we are sure, will offer a solution to most individual circumstances. Matt’s role within Mortgage Advice Bureau is more than just showing clients what options are available to them. Matt prides himself on guiding the client throughout the whole moving process, and works very well with the sales and lettings team in Bourne to enhance the customer’s journey. When we asked Matt what makes him different, he replied, “I’m different because I care – I truly aim to help a customer through the whole moving process and not just arrange the mortgage. I’m there to guide them safely into their new home and ensure they can stay there.” Armed with a clear budget in mind with the security of knowing you can afford the monthly repayments, the proactive and knowledgeable sales team within the North Street, Bourne, office will help search for your dream home – whether that is currently on the market or not! Your Finances

The Perils and Pitfalls of Purchasing a Property - by Joseph Ash - Liberty Partnership Ltd

The starting point is always the same… You have found the new house or investment property and it becomes ‘all you ever wanted’, ‘the house of your dreams’, ‘where we can start a family’, or ‘this will be a good investment’, and so you plan and plot and scheme about the future and the shape that life will take. It feels good, you become excited and then you start to figure out your finances and decide to seek advice. I have given mortgage advice to many clients. I arrange the mortgage and advise you over the terms and costs involved. I understand that my role from this point is in ‘delivering the dream’. I guess though that this is where I am

My role is to act as your adviser, and I sometimes wish that I was slightly more on-board before the dreams of home owning and the thoughts of your future world become as entrenched as they do. There is a great deal more to be considered than the choice of new wallpaper or carpets, and my role is to assist you in moving forward with a clear

So, when you are looking to follow your dream or make a property investment, it is always sensible to know your options and the consequences involved in advance. There is a great deal that can be achieved simply by arranging a meeting with ourselves. ‘Strange Dreams’

– Pennyless’s New Album ‘Strange Dreams’ is the sixth album by Pennyless and finds them returning to the home-produced sound of their earliest albums. More low key and bucolic than their more recent albums, this is still a fine collection of original songs, instrumentals and covers. The album starts with a John Clare poem, spoken and accompanied on acoustic guitar by Les. There is also a re-recording of their own song “John Clare” which seems to set the tone for the whole album. Following on from their previous album which included the COB song “Chain of Love”, Pennyless have this time covered two, well chosen, Clive Palmer songs to good effect. Les’s instrumental “Gypsy Camp (Dream Tune)” came to him in a dream and employs Middle Eastern stylings and fine woodwinds from Graham. While this and more recent albums have moved away from the jigs and reels of earlier times, there is the almost jig (or is it reel?) of the instrumental “Morning Haze” by Graham. The final “Three Suns” by Penny starts off as a song and finishes with an energetic jig-like coda – a fine end to another fine album. Pennyless are Penny Stevens, Les Woods, Graham Dale and Colin Benton, and you can find out more about them by visiting www.pennyless-music.co.uk or on Facebook: Pennyless folk. june 2019

Citizens Advice Highlights a Problem With Scams Aiming at TV Licence Holders

Words from the Mayor

Citizens Advice runs a campaign every June to highlight the continuing problem with scams of all types. One which has been extensively reported recently features scam TV licensing e-mails. These e-mails will use headlines such as ‘Correct your licensing information’, ‘Billing information updates’ and ‘Renew now’. Some of them have targeted people who are over seventy-five years old, regardless of the fact that they are no longer required to pay for a TV licence! E-mails like this play on people’s fears that they may not have ‘done the right thing’. Fraudsters hope that people might panic into responding by clicking on the link within the e-mail, taking them to a fake website. Here, they will be asked to provide some personal details and thereby make themselves vulnerable to having money taken from their bank account. Citizens Advice suggest that people never click on links in e-mails they were not expecting, or provide personal details, including financial information, to anyone who contacts them unexpectedly. Citizens Advice South Lincolnshire supports the national Scams Awareness Campaign, June 10th 23rd 2019. If you would like to hear a presentation on Scams Awareness to a group you belong to, please contact randc2@citizensadvice.org.uk. The Citizens Advice service in Bourne takes place at Wake House, North Street, on Thursdays between 10am and 3pm. Clients are offered a five minute initial check, followed by an appointment at a later time or date if appropriate.

“And now the end is near”, sang Frank Sinatra. By the time of publication, my year in office will have come to an end. “Good riddance”, some of you may say! It’s been a fulfilling year and one both Christine and I have enjoyed immensely. The local elections have come and gone and, although I did not stand at ‘District’ this time, I am pleased that Town Councillors were fortunate to be elected to represent the town at that level and on their behalf I thank you, the electorate. Our town representatives at ‘District’ are Judy Smith, Philip Knowles, Paul Fellows, Jane Kingman, Robert Reid, Helen Crawford and Anna Kelly. Contact details can be found on the SKDC website. So far as the town is concerned, following the election, we have one vacancy to fill and a decision will be made by the council as soon as possible as to how we propose to fill the role. I hope you have found my ramblings both informative and amusing, and I have certainly enjoyed the challenge of writing them. All I can say now, as Frank would have done, “I did it my way.” YOUR COUNCIL MATTERS Just prior to the election, the Town Council learnt that SKDC were in advanced stages of reducing the opening hours of their hub at the Corn Exchange, which they share in Bourne with Lincolnshire County Council, and which would have an effect, not only on services offered by them but also on the library service. Not surprisingly, bearing in mind the election and the fact that there had been no consultation, these plans were put on hold. I am sure this issue will raise its head again quite soon, and the Town Council will try to keep you informed of developments to enable you to make your views known. In addition to the District/ Town Councillors mentioned above, your other Town Councillors are Bob Russell, Roy McKinney, Brenda Johnson, Colin Pattison, Mark Overland, Julia Reid and yours truly. Contact details are available via Bourne Town Council on 01778 426123.

School News Bourne Westfield Primary Academy - Insight from India Over the past year the cultural ambassadors in Years 5 and 6, along with a designated team of teachers from Bourne Westfield, have been developing links with Sajoni School in Southern India with the help of Mr Raghavan, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) Ambassador. This programme is currently developing to include and value the arts, recognising that academic study becomes more valuable when studied alongside the arts.  Teams of teachers and children from Sajoni and Bourne Westfield have previously participated in Skype video calls, and parcels have been exchanged containing items that can help our children understand and learn about each other’s schools and cultures. Both schools recognise and value the huge benefit of learning from direct and authentic links, and were keen to develop this relationship, so inviting teachers

to visit the UK was the next obvious step forward. Children and staff were very excited to be able to welcome and host two members of the teaching team from Sajoni School who spent time at Bourne Westfield from April 29th to May 17th. They shared some traditional art, music, the Tamil language and yoga, across Nursery, EYFS and Key Stages 1 and 2. Kate Atkinson, Head of School, commented, “I can’t thank the cultural team enough for their hard work in bringing this idea to fruition.  We are so pleased to have had this opportunity to host the teachers from Sajoni and have learnt so much about their education system

and culture.” Mr Ganesan, the academic advisor at Sajoni, and one of the team who visited Bourne Westfield to deliver the programme, said, “It was a great revelation to me to share the culture and traditions of Tamil Nadu with BWPA. There have been plenty of new practices that we have learnt – in a nutshell, it was an experience beyond words and feelings.” STEM Ambassador, Mr Raghavan, added, “Visitors are extremely pleased and happy to see the level of engagement from the whole school at all levels. They have started reflecting on many good practices.”  The cultural exchange programme has built new bridges between two countries, where teaching practices can be shared to benefit the education of all of our children, and the two schools will continue to work together to grow the project.

Nursery Continues to Build Strong Links with the Community From September 2017, Headstart Nursery in Bourne began taking their Pre-School children to the local care home. During these visits, the children took part in some brilliant two-way activities and really built some excellent relationships with the staff and the residents. This year, Headstart really wanted to extend this and provide as many opportunities as possible to interlink with the local area and to become a part of the community themselves. To support this, their Toddler room have begun regular visits to the ‘Ginger Fox Café’ where they bring their pennies and buy june 2019

themselves a drink and a biscuit. The children have also visited the local market and bought some fruit and vegetables for their role play area, and walked to the bus stop and went on a short bus ride. In the upcoming months, Headstart are looking at paying regular visits to the library for a Storytime and, following the success from last year, are also looking at hosting another Family Fun Day, that would be open for all families to attend.

History

Discovering . . . St Peter’s Pool Rex Needle

W

ater has been the centre of this historic community since the earliest times and its source is St Peter’s Pool or the Wellhead, a natural feature just a few steps from the town centre. The circular, clay-lined and embanked pool is reputedly fed by seven underground springs providing an abundant supply for early settlers and it is the water or the stream that flows from it that gives Bourne its name, from the Old English word burna which was common in the early Anglo-Saxon period and is found in its modern form, particularly in Scotland, as burn meaning stream or spring. The pool is possibly one of the most ancient sites of artesian water supply in the country, figuring prominently in the development of the town, especially as the water is chalybeate, that is impregnated with salts of iron, and therefore reputed to have qualities conducive to good health which have in past times made it a commercial undertaking for many astute businessmen who bottled it for sale all over the world. The pool’s antiquity has resulted in remarkable traditions that have gathered around it, one asserting that the Bourne Eau flowed underground from Stoke Rochford, sixteen miles away, and that a white duck

66

which was immersed at Stoke, was later seen to rise at the Wellhead while another slice of local folklore suggests that the pool is bottomless and that swimming there might end in tragedy because those who venture into the water are likely to be swallowed up and never seen again, although both tales owe more to the imagination than actuality. During Edwardian times and well into the 20th century, St Peter’s Pool was a popular beauty spot, lovingly cared for as a favourite place for weekend walks by people dressed in their Sunday best, the place to be and be seen, a pleasant and attractive amenity with a white painted wooden walkway that has since disappeared and mute swans gliding gracefully across the clear blue surface while as late as the 1960s, enthusiasts spent many happy hours sailing radiocontrolled boats on the water. The pool and the surrounding Wellhead Gardens have been administered by Bourne United Charities since 1945 and a programme of maintenance and improvement over the years has ensured that this tranquil spot remains a place of public enjoyment for both townspeople and visitors in the foreseeable future.
