Welcome to your September edition and, as the heatwave of a few weeks ago soon become a distant memory, we’re now back into the “exam results” and “back to school” routines for many. For us mums (and dads) with our teenagers now having received their GCSE and A-level results, we can step back, take a deep breath and see just what fantastic human beings they actually are, as they move on to the next stage of their lives. They have done their very best, taken the advice offered by their teachers and us, formulated future plans, and are developing into responsible adults. Phew!

I hope your summer proved enjoyable, relaxing and, just like this magazine, full of excitement and interest.

September’s here, and there’s that “end of summer” feeling, not only in the air, but also in this month’s packed “smorgasbord” of features, articles, advice and entertaining information. It’s now time to look ahead and wonder why Christmas presents should already be on show in the shops! We’ve started the ball rolling here, with several local eating establishments giving advance notice of their Christmas and New Year plans.

The annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival always seems to signal the end of summer for many people, but always provides enough mirth and merriment to see us through the months to come. I’ll share just a couple of my favourite one-liners from previous years: “Crime in multi-storey car parks is wrong on so many levels” – Tim Vine 2011.

“It all starts innocently enough, mixing chocolate and Rice Krispies, but before you know it you’re adding raisins and marshmallows – it’s a rocky road!” – Olaf Falafel 2016.

Sparkle Set to Leave North Street Independent family jewellers, Crown Jewellers of Bourne has announced that it will close its doors for the final time, as owners Cathy and Russ Powell plan to relocate back to their home territory in the North West, where they will be able to spend some quality time with their elderly parents and family.

Their goldsmith and designer son, Matthew, will continue in the area, making exclusive handmade jewellery from his own studios in Peterborough.

Cathy said, “After serving the community as Crown Jewellers for ten years, it is now time for a move”, with the closing date scheduled for the end of October. To commence the start of the closingdown proceedings, the owners are hosting a huge sale, with many fine 4

– Now Offering Top Class Tapas in the Town Eighteen months on from having opened Ginger Fox Cafe on Abbey Road, Bourne, popular owner, Jane Webb, is now more enthusiastic than ever, as she explained her long-term plans to us three lucky invitees from the ‘Discovering Bourne’ team. Having sampled three delicious offerings from new chef, Jim Siddons, our opinions are all extremely high, and a shared feeling that we had in fact made an outstanding ‘Discovery in Bourne’!

The aromatic shin of beef with shallot bhaji, shallot puree and fresh mango segments, dressed with micro coriander, proved irresistible, whilst the pigeon and granola on a raspberry jus with fresh raspberries just left us struggling for words. Needless to say, the salted caramel panna cotta 6

Having gained experience at Purnell’s, a Michelin-starred restaurant in central Birmingham, and then in North Lincolnshire, at the award-winning Winteringham Restaurant, Jim Siddons can now offer a rolling menu which will change with the season. The food will be sourced locally wherever possible, and if the samples with which he dazzled us are typical of his craft, then the future looks assured. Initially open only on Friday and Saturday evenings from 7pm, the intriguing menu contains fine food served in a tapas style, essentially to share, all in relaxed and friendly surroundings.

Jane’s monthly themed nights will also give Jim the opportunity to impress.

Slimming World’s ‘Women of the Year 2018’ Two super slimmers from Bourne have been named Slimming World’s ‘Woman of the Year 2018’, following their life-changing weight losses.

Leanne Ulyatt, from Bourne, has lost a total of 1st 11 ½ lbs in just nine weeks and has been chosen as the 5.30pm group’s ‘Woman of the Year 2018’. Having now dropped at least two dress sizes, Leanne says, “Losing weight has made such a big difference to me. My health is better, I have more energy, I’m happier and I feel more comfortable in my own skin. I’m so happy and comfortable at group, it really is the key to losing weight successfully, as you have the whole group supporting you.”

“My family and friends are all amazed by how much I can eat … and still lose weight! I still eat many of the same meals that I did before I started losing weight, like spaghetti Bolognese, curries and roast dinners. Now I just prepare and cook them differently, and they taste so much better. I never have to miss out and I don’t have to get hung up on weighing and measuring everything I eat. Deana Brooks, from Thurlby was crowned ‘Woman of the Year 2018’ from the 7.30pm group. She lost 4lbs in her first week and was blown away when the changes she’d made had such a big impact so quickly. Having now lost a total of 1st 11lbs, she is now within her personal target.

Since joining Slimming World, Deana has started personal training sessions and drops into boxing and aerobic classes throughout the week.

Peterborough Cathedral to Host Tim Peake’s Spacecraft The national tour of Tim Peake’s spacecraft, presented by Samsung and the Science Museum Group, comes to Peterborough Cathedral from Saturday August 11th, 2018.

Visitors can relive the descent from the International Space Station through a virtual reality experience.

Peterborough Cathedral is one of the finest Norman cathedrals in Europe and is celebrating its 900th anniversary in 2018.

The spacecraft which transported Tim Peake, the UK’s first European Space Agency astronaut, to and from the International Space Station, will land at Peterborough Cathedral and remain on show until Monday November 5th.

The Soyuz TMA-19M capsule, complete with equipped interior

and char marks on its outer body from its re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, will be displayed along with its 25m diameter parachute and Tim Peake’s own Sokol KV-2 emergency spacesuit, as part of a national tour, presented by the Science Museum Group and global technology innovators, Samsung.

‘Be an Astronaut for a Day’ and a Star Dome, presented

by Leicester’s National Space Centre. The Museum of the Moon, a touring artwork by Luke Jerram, will also be on display during the spacecraft’s showing, presented as part of Vivacity’s ‘Without Walls’ programme, from October 5th – 14th.

The display of the iconic craft will be accompanied by Space Descent VR, a unique virtual reality adventure using Samsung Gear VR technology. Narrated by Tim Peake himself, Space Descent VR recreates the experience of making the incredible 250-mile journey back down to Earth from the International Space Station inside a Soyuz capsule.

It is not only schools who will be able to step inside the Tim Peake Space Descent VR Experience Tour Bus, as it will also park up on Peterborough Cathedral Square on August 11th and 12th, for members of the public to take a look.

The Cathedral will present a programme of space-themed activities during the exhibition, including a holiday club, entitled

From Champagne to Shampoo and raised £3,600+ St Barnabas Hospice is absolutely delighted to announce that the recent Bottle Tombola that took place at Heckington Village Show on the weekend of July 28th / 29th has raised a fantastic sum of £3,633.51 for the Lincolnshire Hospice.

We have been collecting bottled items since December 2017 and would like to thank everyone who very kindly donated. The support we’ve received has been truly fantastic, with over 1,000 bottles collected, ranging from Champagne to shampoo!

SciFest Returns to Bourne SciFest is returning to Bourne with a bang, when Matthew Tosh will be presenting his “Fireworks –Real Science or Just Bangs” show in the Corn Exchange on Tuesday, October 2nd at 7.00 p.m.

This will be the tenth ‘SciFest Dave Shaw and Week’. It was started in 2000 friend by a number of enthusiastic teachers and friends who wanted to stimulate an interest in science.

A number of presenters will visit the primary schools in the town and surrounding villages with shows that demonstrate different aspects of science.

“Earn Your Cake” Challenge from Renu The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning takes place on Friday September28th, aimed at raising muchneeded funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, one of the largest British charities which provides specialist health care, information and financial support to people affected by cancer. As well as helping with the medical needs of people affected by cancer, Macmillan also looks at the social, emotional and practical impact cancer can have, and campaigns for better cancer care.

Still with an exotic theme, Dave Shaw will be relating his experiences of life among the tribes in the equatorial rainforest.

Bourne’s popular health, beauty and fitness centre, Renu, is offering the chance for you to become involved from 10.30am onwards on the big day. As well as a great raffle with lots of Renu prizes, they will be having an “Earn your Cake” challenge going on all day. Anyone can come in on that day and do a circuit of the gym equipment and Renu will donate £1 to the charity for each person! You don’t need to be in gym kit - it’s just a bit of fun, but one where you can earn your cake and eat it too!

Students will travel into space with Starlincs who will show the wonders of the heavens inside a dome.

Renu will also be donating 10% of any retail products sold on that day to the charity.

“Zoolab” will be giving hands-on experiences with a number of small animals, such as giant land snails, corn snakes and centipedes, while “Extreme Animals” will be showing larger animals, including a fourteen foot python.

Back on ‘terra firma’, Mark Atkinson from Earthbound Misfits will show how gravity and other forces can affect circus skills, whilst Matt Pritchard will combine magic and science in his appropriately named “Science Magic” show.

A second evening show will be held in the Corn Exchange of Thursday, October 4th, when James Soper will entertain us again. He is keeping the title of his presentation under wraps, but be assured James always combines spectacular demonstrations with a clear and humorous explanation.

Tickets for both shows at £3.00 each will be available nearer the time at Wild Heart Café in the Angel Precinct, and on line. See the local press or contact the schools for further information.

Not content with all this, Mark Atkinson will be offering one-hour Circus Skills workshops in the Baptist Church Hall on the morning of Saturday October 6th.

Taff Roberts – A Tribute I was recently privileged to be able to spend time hearing, from his widow and youngest daughter, about a very popular Bourne character who, on June 28th 2018, at the age of sixty-three, lost his two-year-long battle with myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of blood cancer.

“Taff” Roberts, (who rarely had to answer to ‘Royden Garrie Roberts, M.B.E.’) arrived in Bourne in 1988, when his final R.A.F. posting brought him to Wittering. This enabled him and his wife Yvonne to bring up their three daughters, Louise, Gemma and Lyndsey, (and latterly their affectionate Staffy, Bola), without too much Forces disruption to family life nor to the girls’ education.

His life-long passion for sub-aqua diving began during his time in the R.A.F. and it was on one of his many overseas sub-aqua club meetings that a chance encounter with a young clerical officer, working for the Hong Kong police at the time, finally led to Taff and Yvonne getting married in 1988.

Taff was always eager to take every opportunity to be active, be it in the water, (he had been a keen committee member of the Bourne Outdoor Swimming Pool), or up a mountain on skis, (the latter on the advice of former Bourne G.P, Dr Colin Burr). It was particularly painful, therefore, when Taff’s health began to deteriorate, following a heart attack, and then the onset of his myelodysplastic syndrome two years ago.

Taff’s extensive experience and strong interpersonal skills, honed in the R.A.F, were able to be utilised when, in 1993, he embarked upon his second career, (which was to last seventeen years), in the Lincolnshire Police Force.

Taff had spells in Bourne, Grantham and Spalding, including a cameo

Taff’s roots were firmly in the Rhondda Valley of South Wales and in 1971, his twenty-two year career in the R.A.F. began, initially as an aircraft technician, but, upon his transfer to Wittering in 1988, there began a highly successful role as team leader of the Bomb Disposal Unit, including active service in Kuwait at the end of the First Gulf War. This culminated in Taff 14

Undeterred, however, he continued to contribute to life with family and friends, as fully as he could. His “Taffy’s Tours” are now well-established among a wide circle of friends, and involve an annual overseas ‘cultural pilgrimage’, (a few days together ‘en masse’, in some European city, with all manner of accompanying, pleasure-seeking activity!)

It is hoped that “Taffy’s Tours” will remain a lasting legacy to the memory of a wonderful husband, doting father, and all-round damned fine boyo. s e p t e m be r 2 0 1 8

Helping Mums Reach Their Fitness Goals

inding time to exercise is something a lot of mums struggle with, and during the summer holidays good habits often fall by the wayside. September provides a fresh start with the opening of the new school term and the beginning of the countdown to Christmas (eek!) It also happens to be the month when most babies are born, so I thought I’d dedicate this month’s column to helping new, and not so new, mums reach their fitness goals.

I’ve teamed up with Joni from JR Fit, who specialises in pre and postnatal fitness, to provide our:

TOP TIPS

Make time for yourself Often your own self care is last on the list, but exercise makes you feel good. Remember … happy mum = happy children (most of the time!) so ditch the guilt and make time to spend on your fitness and wellbeing.

Set yourself a goal The best way to keep motivated is to set yourself a goal – you might want to lose a stone by Christmas (it’s achievable in 12 weeks!), get stronger, or run 5km. If you’ve only just had a baby, your body needs time to recover, so build your fitness gradually and focus on feeling fitter, rather than aiming for a weight loss.

Incorporate exercise into your routine Walk, jog or cycle on the school run; go to the gym on the way home to or from work; make childcare plans so you can attend a regular evening class; or find a daytime class that you can bring your child to.

Build your fit mum tribe Mums are great at supporting each other, so work out with a friend, take childcare in turns, or make some new friends in our fitness classes or the gym.

Get specialist pre and postnatal advice Exercise has many benefits while pregnant and postnatal, but you

will need to adapt it for each stage to ensure it is safe and effective. A qualified pre and postnatal instructor will be able to do this for you. If you have diastasis recti (abdominal gap), pelvic floor dysfunction (leaking urine), or prolapse, which may affect you years after giving birth, a specialist instructor can help support your recovery.

Can Cleaning Our Teeth Help Our Joint Pain As We Get Older?

H

ave you ever had an ache and been told by friends and family, “It’s your age, you just have to put up with it”? or “There’s nothing we can do, it’s age-related”? Just this week a patient told me he was ‘just old’, and asked what should he expect at his age? Well, there are some things that just can’t be stopped or reversed, but some aches and pains are unnecessary.

So how do you know the difference?

Usually arthritic pain starts gradually; it is bothersome at the start, but not agonising. It starts when some of the cartilage covering the ends of the bones roughens and becomes thin, then the bone thickens, so the pain is not sudden.

As time goes on, (we’re talking months and years here, not days), the bone at the edges of the joint often thickens to help spread the load. This extra bone forms bumpy bits called spurs or osteophytes. That’s why osteoarthritic joints look a bit fatter than normal.

Of course, as all of this wear and tear happens, it can cause pain, but it also causes a change in the way the joint works, which means the muscles can get tight, and the joints above and below have different strains put on them as our bodies compensate.

So, not only does the arthritic joint hurt, you’ve now also got pain from the changes in the muscles and other joints. These can be helped with treatment and exercise. You’d be amazed at how many patients think their pain is caused by arthritis when it’s only a muscle strain.

One myth that needs busting is that you should avoid doing exercise with an arthritic joint.Evidence suggests that strengthening the muscles that support our joints can be hugely beneficial in reducing the symptoms of arthritis. Arthritis Action actually recommends an exercise programme based on the BBC ‘Trust Me I’m a Doctor’ programme. They tested an exercise routine that people could do at home. One of these exercises was a squat to be performed whilst cleaning your teeth – so yes, cleaning your teeth can help with joint pain as we get older! It can be a little daunting starting a new exercise programme so if you are unsure about any of these then we can help with advice –along with treatment to help ease the muscle strains –which will help keep your body mobile.

So, don’t sit there and blame your age – get the right exercises and treatment, and remember to squat whilst cleaning your teeth!

Is Lack of Sleep Killing You? “I’ll sleep when I’m dead.” Sadly, that joking remark has become the motto of many over-achievers in our society today. The list of reasons why we skip a good night’s sleep is extensive. Lack of sleep is progressively getting worse with the increase of gadgets, bad habits and the rhythm of our ’24 hour society’.

Words from the Mayor David Mapp

I’m not a gardener! Indeed, after knowing the difference between roses, tulips and daffodils, every other flowering plant is a little beyond me. That is Christine’s domain. Mine is the green stuff or, as we have nicknamed it this summer the “strawn”, and during the last few months my job has been a bit of a doddle from a cutting point of view. Now the rains have arrived, I assume I’ll be dusting down the mower.

Since the last issue, we have attended and enjoyed, amongst other events, a sports presentation evening at Bourne Grammar School where it was great to see the successes of the pupils, and a superb production of the musical, “Hairspray” at the Bourne C. of E. Primary Academy. Christine and I were delighted to see such enthusiasm and talent displayed by such young children. I don’t believe that it could have been bettered in the West End! It now falls to me to announce the title to my sub-piece which, after having removed the unprintable, mulled over the amusing, and cogitated over the clever, has left me with a title that can be read two ways. So, welcome to …

YOUR COUNCIL MATTERS ● Many of you have commented on the super flowering wooden planters, hanging baskets and displays around the town, courtesy of the Council, the Len Pick Trust and beautifully planted and maintained by Bill Pauley.

Our thanks go to him. ● Similarly, since we have taken on-board grass verge maintenance from the County Council, where applicable, we are very happy with the work carried out

by Gary’s Gardens to help keep the town looking neat and tidy. ● After reading a couple of letters in the local papers over the last two weeks, I would just like to attempt to clarify the position on car park charging in the main “M & S” car park. This does not include that part owned by SKDC, immediately outside the Corn Exchange, which is now gated. The main car park is privately owned and the landlord can impose whatever parking policy it wishes, and it is more than likely that, as a condition of taking the unit, “M & S” may have insisted on the imposition of a charging policy to ensure a regular turnover of vehicles.

Bourne In Bloom 2018 July saw the judging of the East Midlands in Bloom Competition, and Bourne’s residents can feel reasonably confident of success this year, especially with the arrival of the beautiful wooden planters, located at all four entrances to the town. Bourne’s entry to the competition is made and managed by the Town Council and the planters have been sponsored by the Len Pick Trust. The town centre has been ablaze with colour, with the annual summer baskets and displays skilfully maintained by local resident and market trader, Bill Pauley.

Judging day was Wednesday July 4th with Chair of East Midlands in Bloom, Mr Jeff Bates, and experienced judge, Diane Moore, looking at the town’s efforts. The tour started by looking across the fenland from Wingate Way, just along the edge of the Carr Dyke. From here could be seen the wellplanted Dyke edge across to the Len Pick Owl Tower.

The tour moved on to the Willoughby School, who demonstrated how working with local businesses and the local community can create an inspiring outdoor environment that has a huge impact on the students of the school.

The group, which included Councillor Colin Pattison, Town Clerk Ian Sismey and the two judges, then moved on to the Tesco store at the top of Cherry Holt Road. This may seem like a strange choice to include in the tour, but the store was one of the first ‘eco’ friendly stores in the UK. Highlights also included a visit to the Friends of Bourne Woods community orchard, meeting up with trustees of Bourne2Play and Bourne United Charities.

All in all, the judges were well impressed by all that they saw on the day and we await the results on September 19th.

Finally, our tomato plants have suffered tomato blossom blight, where the upper fruit is normal but the underneath is black, caused I am told by lack of calcium. Apparently, my suggestion of treating the problem with milk is not the answer!

Inheritance Tax Changes Ahead?

W

hen Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond, wrote to the Office of Tax Simplification (OTS), asking it to review inheritance tax (IHT), one had to wonder what the outcome would be. The Economic think-tank, Resolution Foundation, published a report in May with some recommendations for radical reform of our IHT system.

Part of the report’s basis for change was that inheritances and other gifts totalled £127bn in 2015/16 but only raised tax of £5bn - equating to an effective rate of just 4%. Between 2006/07 and 2022/23, IHT receipts are forecast to grow at less than a quarter as fast as inheritances.

So the think-tank has recommended the current regime is scrapped and a move to a lifetime receipts-based tax, assessed on the recipient.

Similar schemes are in operation in France and Ireland, so it is not a new concept – they believe that such a change would deliver both practical and perceptual benefits and, not surprisingly, also increase tax receipts.

So how would it work? Individuals would have to keep track of cumulative receipts. However, gifts of £3,000 or less per donor per year, gifts between spouses/ civil partners, and gifts to charities would be excluded. The cumulative gift allowance would initially be

£125,000 received tax-free, with the allowance being indexed in line with inflation.

A basic rate of 20% would apply on gifts received between £125,000 and £500,000 with a top rate of 30% applying thereafter. The estimate is that this would generate £11bn annually, compared to the forecast of £6bn under the current system.

So it would be farewell to both the seven-year cumulative gifting rule and the normal expenditure out of income exemption, removing many of the tax planning opportunities currently available.

Business relief and agricultural relief, which currently cost the Treasury £1.22bn, would also be targeted to remove predominantly tax-driven motivation for owning the assets.

The suggestions are to cap the relief, increasing the minimum ownership period and limiting the relief to “real” farmers and business owners. The trust tax regime, which is perhaps the most complex, would meanwhile be re-designed to reflect the lifetime receipts rules.

If none of that appears to be enough, the think-tank also recommends changes to the tax treatment of pensions on death, and tinkering with Capital Gains Tax rules on death.

None of these may come to fruition, but it does indicate that the days of IHT being a “voluntary tax” may not be the case much longer.

One thing we can be sure of is that anyone who has a potential Inheritance Tax problem should act sooner, rather than later.

Discovering . . . The Vestry Hall

O

ne of Bourne’s most interesting old buildings is tucked away off North Street yet despite the important part it has played in our history few people notice it.

The old chapel was built in 1867 by the Calvinist Baptist movement, financed by the congregation through voluntary subscriptions, a solid construction of red brick and blue slate with room for 300 people. But the initial enthusiasm did not last and by 1890 the chapel had been forced to close because of mounting debts and for several years the building stood empty and disused until 1899 when it was bought by H Company, the 2nd Battalion, the Lincolnshire Regiment, for use as a drill hall, gymnasium and clubroom.

The unit remained in occupation until 1914 when the hall was sold at public auction for £340 to the trustees of the late Thomas Carlton, a former draper, of North Street, and made available to the Abbey Church for vestry meetings and other social activities. From that date, the building was administered by the parochial church council and became known as the Vestry Hall, the name which survives to this day.

During the Great War, the hall was commandeered by the War Office and turned into a military hospital for casualties from the front and by 1918, almost 950 wounded servicemen had been cared for, mainly by local medical staff under the direction of Dr John Gilpin (1864-1943) who was subsequently awarded the MBE for his work.

The Red Cross and the Home Guard used the chapel for various purposes during the Second World War of 1939-45 and after that it became a venue for events such as concerts, drama productions and sporting activities before being sold to Bourne United Charities in 1961. The Hereward Youth Club used it until 1986 when it was sold as a commercial property to a local shopkeeper in 1996 but by this time the hall was deteriorating through poor maintenance, eventually becoming unsuitable for public use and in 2003 it was again put on the market.

The buyers were Caroline Glithero and her husband Paul Nicholson who carried out a sympathetic restoration to turn it into a family home which is how it survives to this day.

A bronze plaque recording the hall’s use as a military hospital which was removed for safe keeping by Bourne United Charities has been returned by the trustees to the new owners and given pride of place over the front door in the entrance foyer, a fitting touch to a most worthy restoration project.

Excel Custom Lists

It’s been a while since I covered anything from my favourite application, Excel. Here’s a tip that some may find useful, especially in business.

Many will be familiar with the Excel feature that lets you enter a month, for example January, then click on the bottom right of the cell and drag this along the next eleven cells to auto-populate the other months of the year, from January to December.

What many won’t know is that you can create your own lists for doing this.

In this example, I will create a set of five animal names that represent a group of items.

Scroll down to the General Section and find the option to edit Custom Lists This is where you create your custom list. In this example, I have classes at school called Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Pandas and Badgers.

I can use Custom List to create these as a list that I can drag to auto-populate.

You should see your new list created at the bottom of the Custom Lists with values to the right.

Using your new list is straightforward.

Click on NEW LIST Type the LIST with a comma between each item; e.g: Tigers, Lions, Elephants, Pandas, Badgers Now click Add

First open Excel and click on the File Tab then Options at the bottom.

Next click on Advanced to the left.

Click in any cell and type one of the names that you used in the list.

Next put the mouse cursor on the lower right of the cell – a large + sign appears Click on this plus sign, hold down the left mouse button and drag to the right to autopopulate the other columns.

You can use this horizontally for columns or vertically for rows.

The Potting Shed What an amazing summer we have had, but watering has been a major issue during those weeks without rain: this was my main task during that time as the weeds were fortunately easy to keep down. However, the watering paid off and I had the best season for a while and some super crops.

Now is the time to lift potatoes before the arrival of cold damp days and before the slugs and worms can invade the crop.

Make sure they are well dried out before storing them in light-proof sacks, and only store undamaged tubers. Onions should also be lifted and, if you are keen, you can string them and then hang in a cool frost-free place such as a shed.

Cut courgettes and marrows regularly because they will be finished by the end of the month, as will outdoor tomatoes.

Remove any green tomatoes and place them in a drawer or shoebox to ripen.

As far as sowing seeds and planting out goes, there’s not much that can be done: you can still sow rocket, spinach, oriental salad leaves and winter lettuces. Crop covers keep the temperature slightly higher than the ambient temperature and protect the plants from getting battered by harsher weather conditions. Spring cabbages can be planted in their final positions, but it is wise to cover them in netting to keep the birds and other pests at bay.

If you haven’t already got a composter, now would be a good time to make or buy one as there is plenty of dead or dying material available from your plot. If you have one, add any material that isn’t diseased, turn it, water if it is dry, and cover to keep warm. Don’t forget to add “brown” materials

such as autumn leaves, cardboard, egg boxes, egg shells and sweetcorn husks, to name but a few. The proportion of “greens” to “browns” should be 50/50, with no dairy products, meat or fish, nor non-degradable materials.

A few jobs that need doing include: • Cut down asparagus to 2.5cms (1in) above the ground.

• Turn the compost heap and water if it is dry.

• Earth-up or stake Brussels and remove any yellowing lower leaves or those that have fallen off, as these are ideal homes for pests to shelter. Tall growing varieties may need staking against autumn winds.

• Harvest apples and pears.

• Ripen pumpkins and squashes by removing leaves to allow sunlight in.

• Clear away old foliage and vegetation –leaving it to rot on the soil may spread diseases.

• Prune blackberries when picking is over –cut out all of the canes that carried this year’s fruit, and leave new canes unpruned.

• Plant new strawberry plants and those propagated from runners.

• Clear the soil of spent crops and leave it ‘rough dug over’ for the winter. It is also a good time to sow “green manures”, such as field beans, annual rye grass or phacelia, which overwinter and can be dug into the ground next spring.

Citizens Advice – Migrant Workers The Citizens Advice Service in Bourne takes place at Wake House, on Thursdays between 10am and 3pm. Clients are offered a five-minute initial check, followed by an appointment at a later time or date, if appropriate.

The service is part of the South Lincolnshire Citizens Advice Service, which spreads from Grantham to Spalding and Stamford. One of the specialisms in the wider area is the help given to migrant workers, assisting them to integrate into their communities, through a team of three Polish- and Russian-speaking advisors working in Grantham and Spalding, and this is particularly relevant during the summer season. Face-to-face advice is funded through the National Lottery, and there is a migrant workers helpline funded by the Henry Smith Foundation.

Migrant workers face many of the same problems as any client of Citizens Advice, ranging from tax credits and rented housing issues, to employment issues, sickness benefits and pensions, and there is the added difficulty of understanding the rules in the UK relating to these. All three advisors have come to the UK in the same way

as their clients, and have now put down roots here, so they are in a unique position to understand the migrant workers’ problems.

There have been calls from legal professionals, especially ‘Resolution’, (formerly the Solicitors Family Law Association) for there to be a change to the law, enabling people to divorce without having to state a “fault”.

As things have stood since the 1973 Matrimonial Causes Act, many petitioners have had to cite either alleged adultery, where the petitioner finds it intolerable to live with the respondent, or ‘unreasonable behaviour’, where the respondent is alleged to have behaved in such a way that the petitioner cannot reasonably be expected to live with the respondent.

The other grounds for divorce include circumstances where the respondent has deserted the petitioner for a continuous period of at least two years, or where the parties consent to a divorce. Failing that, the petitioner and the respondent may have lived apart for a continuous period of at least five years, where no consent is required.

YOU’RE just about to sit down to your favourite soap or are in the middle of cooking dinner or bathing the kids, the phone rings - and it’s one of THOSE calls.

It is estimated that around 30 million nuisance calls are made each week. However, many of these are made not just by cold callers, but by scammers; bringing misery to some of the most vulnerable members of our community, such as those living alone or with dementia.

At Safe Local Trades, we echo the concerns of groups like the recently-formed Cambs Against Scams Partnership and the nationwide Friends Against Scams initiative - which recognise the harm done by fraudsters; not only those who dupe their victims to part with their cash, but who also feel threatened and helpless against the callers.

In 2016, a grant of £500,000 was made to National Trading Standards Scams Team, (NTS Scams Team), to provide telephone call blocking technology to people who are bombarded by scam and nuisance calls, and are most vulnerable to losing money to these callers.

Initially, the focus was on providing call blocking units to people living with dementia.

There are an estimated 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025. The project has been a great success, with the units blocking 99% of scam and nuisance calls received and making dramatic improvements to users’ wellbeing.

And, equally as important, the results saw a 97% reduction in users losing money at the hands of scammers, an 85% reduction in users feeling helpless to stop the calls, and an 85% reduction in the number of users who were worried by these calls.

Friends Against Scams is a NTS Scams Team initiative, which aims to protect and prevent people from becoming victims of scams by empowering communities to “Take a Stand Against Scams”.

Friends Against Scams has been created to tackle the lack of scams awareness by providing information about scams and those who fall victim to them. This information enables communities and organisations to understand scams, talk about scams, and cascade messages throughout communities about scams prevention and protection.

FAS encourages communities and organisations to take the knowledge learnt and turn it into action.

Have Fun Cycling - but Stay Safe!

here comes a time in every child’s life when they get the freedom to go out and about, particularly if they have a bike. Bikes are great, as they provide an opportunity for independence and to go further than ever before. No doubt you have spent a lot of time teaching your children to ride a bike and they are ready and raring to go, but before they do we all need to make sure they are safe and confident riders and can deal with situations they may come across when they are out.

Checking your bike Before any trip out make sure you check: 1 – Brakes - Does the bike stop when you apply the brake?

2 – Reflectors and lights - Are all the reflectors working and positioned correctly? Do you have a white light for the front and a red light for the back when riding at dusk?

What to do if you’re involved in a collision with a motor vehicle • Get off the road and deal with the incident in a safe place.

3 – Tyres. Are they properly inflated and free of punctures? Do you have a puncture repair kit to hand?

• Stay calm.

If you need any help checking, your local cycle shop will be able to assist.

General Tips • Teach your child how to check that their bike is safe to use.

• Make sure the bike is the right size for your child.

• Use a good quality lock and make sure your bike is property marked, (your local NPT can help with bike marking).

• Make sure your child has a helmet which fits and is worn correctly, (it should not be pushed too far back on the head). Helmets must be properly fastened so they don’t come off in a collision.

• Ensure your child wears high-visibility clothing when cycling.

• Seek medical attention if required.

• If you are injured or you suspect that an offence has occurred, you should report the incident to the police as soon as possible, and in any case within 24 hours, (call 101 or attend at your local station).

• In case of serious injury or obstruction to the road that cannot be easily cleared, call 999 requesting police/ambulance attendance.

• The driver of a motor vehicle must stop and provide their name, address and the name and address of the vehicle owner, together with the vehicle registration number, as required by Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

• If the driver does not stop, note the registration number of any vehicles involved and the details of any additional witnesses, before contacting the police.

BOURNE WORLD WAR 1 CELEBRATION WALL HANGINGS

SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY PROJECT The Len Pick Trust in association with Bourne Town Council have commissioned the above project with local artist Sue Rowland, in collaboration with local schools and community groups.

Both LPT and BTC believe that this is a fantastic way for the town to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ending of World War 1 and leave a lasting legacy of the event.

The work will consist of four large panels and a semi-circle of poppies above, in the shaped alcove in the Town Hall, plus cascades of poppies for the Town Hall front steps and a textile panel for the Darby and Joan Hall. The work will be created by the schools and community in professional artist-led workshops, and completed for the celebration in November.

The aim is to create a dramatic, vibrant display of several large panels which all link with design and colour, but have variation in techniques to suit

secondary and primary school students’ skills.

The names of all the men who lost their lives will be included in the work to honour them; the act of sewing the names is a poignant link to each individual.

The regiment badges will be included as well as figures, to celebrate the work of the Red Cross nurses who worked at Bourne VAD Hospital. Community work will contain messages and names of loved ones or family members remembered from the war and will take the form of embroidered poppies and sweetheart pincushion pieces.

The main theme will be general World War 1 images, using soldiers’ silhouettes, poppies etc. but with local links as well. Secondary schools will create individual panels with messages and images looking at the embroidered postcards from the war as a starting point.

Four panels will be displayed in the Town Hall and one smaller panel at the Darby and Joan Hall, (and at the

Memorial Gardens on Remembrance Sunday in November). There will also be display boards which will have information about the project, encouraging people to go to the Town Hall to see the main work.

There will be a drop-in workshop at the Town Hall where people could create a simple poppy with messages or names attached, which would then be added to the display throughout the day.

Schools involved will be Bourne C of E Primary Academy, Elsea Park, Westfield Primary and Bourne Academy.

Community involvement will include The Cedars and Worth Court, plus possibly the W.I. and anyone else interested in sewing a heart or poppy who would like to come along to a workshop at a venue in Bourne.

There will be a family learning day, with adults and children involved in a workshop at Elsea Park and Bourne Abbey with the opportunity for parents to sew poppies and the children to make paper poppies to decorate the wall hangings.

“Urine the Money!”

T

he heat of recent weeks has meant that lounging outside with a Pimm’s and a parasol is the most active I want to be. The cats are the same, (although they’re not so keen on the Pimm’s!) Most cats find a nice shady spot with a gentle breeze, and stretch out to enjoy the summer. However, the hot weather can bring its problems, even to cats. As many people know, cats came originally from Egypt and were brought across to Britain by the Romans to deal with mice eating their harvests. Cats, therefore, are desert species and tend to drink less water than other types of pets.

Many cats will get most of their daily fluid requirements from eating wet food, a quick drink from the pond or bird feeder, rather than the water in a clean bowl.

The first indications of problems are when your cat is frequently squatting on the litter tray. It may be that your cat uses a litter tray very rarely and this is unusual, or that your cat is

spending a long time squatting.

Your cat may also pass urine in a corner of the room which is odd for a normally clean animal. For most cats, this is an indication of cystitis, inflammation of the bladder itself.

If you could see the bladder directly, it is red and thickened. It also becomes quite fragile and bleeds easily. Not only is the bladder itself inflamed, but the tube taking urine from the bladder to the outside, the urethra, is also painful. Your cat will feel they need to pass urine frequently because of this, even though there is very little in the bladder. The urine stings and occasionally cats will yowl with the discomfort – unpleasant indeed.

A more serious condition than cystitis generally occurs in male cats, (although females can also be affected), where the urethra becomes blocked and the cat is unable to pass urine at all. This is known as ‘a blocked cat’ and is so

serious they can die within a few hours. The urine dams back to the kidneys affecting their functions and the cat can go into shock and acute renal failure.

There are numerous reasons why this occurs. Infections and stress are two of the most common reasons.

Some cats can produce tiny crystals in their urine and, when these join to form stones, they can block the urethra. More concentrated urine in dry weather increases the tendency for these stones to form. Dry diets used to be implicated many years ago due to a higher salt content, but good quality dry foods have eliminated this problem.

Other problems, of course, can mimic the symptoms of cystitis, so if your cat is no longer happy and relaxed but straining and crying, call the vet immediately. It may be mild cystitis and is quickly sorted, but it may be much worse – don’t let squatting cats lie!
