PAAT
Our PAAT program helps people understand their rights to use medical devices or technology that can aid them in managing their disability. Collectively this is called Assistive Technology (AT). We help people navigate legal issues such as insurance denials of coverage for AT or related services, access to medical care that requires use of AT, housing accommodations, workplace accommodations, and accommodations in school.
Inaccessible Absentee Ballot
In 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we saw unprecedented barriers to voting across the country and New York State. The use of Absentee Ballots was seen as the safest way to vote, however, the ballots were inaccessible.
DRNY filed a lawsuit on behalf of two voters with print disabilities, to enforce their rights under the ADA for an accessible absentee ballot. We worked with Brown Goldstein Levy and Disability Rights Advocates to litigate the case to a final resolution. Our clients settled with an agreement that provided a partially accessible absentee ballot. The resolution included an electronic ballot delivery and marking system, but did not include an electronic return. We are hopeful that state legislation will ultimately provide an electronic return option for all New Yorkers.
