The name comes from the Latin word for Angel and the prayer itself reminds us of how Jesus Christ assumed our human nature through the Mystery of the Incarnation
HOLY MASS FOR VOCATIONS
PROCESSIONAL HYMN
O purest of creatures, sweet Mother, sweet Maid, The one spotless womb wherein Jesus was laid: Dark night hath come down on us, Mother, and we Look out for thy shining, Sweet Star of the Sea, Look out for thy shining, Sweet Star of the Sea, Sweet Star of the Sea.
Deep night hath come down on this rough-spoken world, And the banners of darkness are boldly unfurl'd; And the tempest-toss'd Church, all her eyes are on thee; They look for thy shining, Sweet Star of the Sea, They look for thy shining, Sweet Star of the Sea, Sweet Star of the Sea.
Oh! blissful and calm was the wonderful rest That thou gavest thy God in thy virginal breast; For the heaven He left He found heaven in thee; And He shone in thy shining, Sweet Star of the Sea.
Oh! shine on us brighter than ever, then shine! For the primest of honors, dear Mother! is thine; "Conceived without sin," thy new title shall be, Clear light from thy birth-spring, Sweet Star of the Sea.

H Y M N S ( F I R S T L I N E S ) Holy Virgin, By God’s decree 1. As I kneel before you 2. Daily, daily, sing to Mary 3. O Mother blest, whom God bestows 4 Faith of our fathers, living still 5 Give me joy in my heart 6. How lovely on the mountains 7. Walk with me O my Lord. 8. Ave, Maria, O Maiden, O Mother 9 Hail, Queen of heav’n, the ocean star 10
12
1 Holy Virgin, By God’s decree, you were called eternally; that he could give his Son to our race Mary, we praise you, hail, full of grace. Ave, ave, ave, Maria.
By your faith and loving accord, as the handmaid of the Lord, you undertook God’s plan to embrace. Mary, we thank you, hail, full of grace. Ave, ave, ave, Maria.
Joy to God you gave and expressed, of all women none more blessed, when in mankind your Son took his place. Mary, we love you, hail full of grace Ave, ave, ave, Maria.
Refuge for your children so weak, sure protection all can seek Problems of live you help us to face Mary, we trust you, hail, full of grace Ave, ave, ave, Maria.
To our needy world of today love and beauty you portray, showing the path to Christ we must trace Mary, our mother, hail full of grace Ave, ave, ave, Maria.
(J-P Lécot)
2. As I kneel before you, as I bow my head in prayer, take this day, make it yours and fill me with your love.
Ave, Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum, benedicta tu.
All I have I give you, ev’ry dream and wish are yours Mother of Christ, Mother of mine, present them to my Lord
Chorus
As I kneel before you, and I see your smiling face, ev’ry thought, ev’ry word is lost in your embrace
3 Daily, daily, sing to Mary, sing, my soul, her praises due; all her feasts, her actions worship, with her heart’s devotion true. Lost in wond’ring contemplation be her majesty confessed: call her mother, call her Virgin, happy Mother, Virgin blest.
She is mighty to deliver; call her, trust her lovingly. When the tempest rages round thee, she will calm the troubled sea. Gifts of heaven she has given, noble Lady, to our race; she, the Queen, who decks her subjects, with the light of God’s own grace
Sing, my tongue, the Virgin’s trophies, who for us her Maker bore; for the curse of old inflicted, peace and blessings to restore Sing in songs of praise unending, sing the world’s majestic Queen; weary not nor faint in telling all the gifts she gives to men
All my senses, heart, affections, strive to sound her glory forth; spread abroad, the sweet memorials, of the Virgin’s priceless worth Where the voice of music thrilling, where the tongues of eloquence, that can utter hymns beseeming all her matchless excellence?
All our joys do flow from Mary, all then join her praise to sing; trembling, sing the Virgin Mother, Mother of our Lord and King, while we sing her awful glory, far above our fancy’s reach, let our hearts be quick to offer love the heart alone can teach.
(Ascribed to St Bernard of Cluny C12th)

4 O Mother blest, whom God bestows on sinners and on just, what joy, what hope thou givest those who in thy mercy trust.
Thou are clement, thou are chaste, Mary, thou are fair; of all mothers sweetest, best, none with thee compare.
O heavenly mother, mistress sweet! It never was yet told that suppliant sinner left thy feet unpitied, unconsoled.
O mother pitiful and mild, cease not to pray for me; for I do love thee as a child, and sigh for love of thee
O mother blest, for me obtain, ungrateful though I be, to love that God who first could design to show such love for me
5. Faith of our fathers, living still in spite of dungeon, fire and sword; oh, how our hearts beat high with joy whene’er we hear that glorious word.
Faith of our fathers! Holy Faith! We will be true to thee till death, we will be true to thee till death.
Our fathers, chained in prisons dark, were still in heart and conscience free; how sweet would be their children’s fate, if they, like them, could die for thee!
Faith of our fathers, Mary’s prayers, shall win our country back to thee; and through the truth that comes from God our land shall indeed be free
6 Give me joy in my heart keep me praising, give me joy in my heart, I pray Give me joy in my heart keep me praising, keep me praising till the end of day.
Sing hosanna, Sing hosanna, Sing hosanna to the king of Kings. Sing hosanna, Sing hosanna, Sing hosanna to the king
Give me peace in my heart, keep me resting... Give me love in my heart, keep me serving Give me oil in my lamp, keep me burning
7. How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, good news, announcing peace, proclaiming news of happiness: Our God reigns. (x6)
You watchmen, lift your voices joyfully as one, shout for your king, your king!
See eye to eye, the Lord restoring Sion, Our God reigns (x6)
Wasteplaces of Jerusalem, break forth with joy! We are redeemed, redeemed The Lord has saved and comforted his people Our God reigns (x6)
Ends of the earth, see the salvation of our God! Jesus is Lord, is Lord! Before the nations he has bared his holy arm. Our God reigns (x6)

8 Walk with me O my Lord Through the darkest night and brightest day, Be at my side O Lord, Hold my hand and guide me on my way.
Sometimes the road seems long, My energy is spent, Then, Lord I think of you and I am given strength.
Stones often bar my path, And there are times I fall, But you are always there, To help me when I call.
Just as you calmed the wind, And walked upon the sea, Conquer, my living Lord The storms that threaten me
Help me to pierce the mists That cloud my heart and mind So that I shall not fear The steepest mountain -side
As once you healed the lame And gave sight to the blind, Help me when I’m downcast To hold my head up high
9 Ave, Maria, O Maiden, O Mother, fondly thy children are calling on thee; thine are the graces unclaimed by another, sinless and beautiful Star of the sea.
Mater amabalis, ora pro nobis, pray for thy children who call upon thee; Ave Sanctissima, Ave purissima, sinless and beautiful Star of the sea.
Ave, Maria, the night shades are falling, softly, our voices arise unto thee; Earth’s lonely exiles for succour are calling sinless and beautiful Star of the sea
Ave Maria, thy children are kneeling, words of endearment are murmured to thee; Softly thy spirit upon us is stealing, Sinless and beautiful Star of the sea
10. Hail, Queen of heav’n, the ocean star, guide of the wand’rer here below; thrown on life’s surge, we claim thy care; save us from peril and from woe Mother of Christ, star of the sea, pray for the wanderer, pray for me
O gentle, chaste and spotless maid, we sinners make our prayers through thee; remind thy Son that he has paid the price of our iniquity Virgin most pure, star of the sea, pray for the sinner, pray for me.
Sojourners in this vale of tears, to thee, blest advocate, we cry; pity our sorrows, calm our fears, and soothe with hope our misery. Refuge in grief, star of the sea, pray for the mourner, pray for me.
And while to him who reigns above, in Godhead One, in Persons Three, the source of life, of grace, of love, homage we pay on bended knee, do thou, bright Queen, star of the sea, pray for thy children, pray for me

CANON CHRIS THOMAS
I was brought up as an Anglican in the Church in Wales and so the Christian life was something that was part and parcel of our family life, but not hugely central to it But I used to go to church each Sunday and was an altar server and played my part in the life of the parish
When I was at University in Nottingham, I began to read the Catholic Catechism which had just been published and, coupled with the good preaching I heard at St Barnabas Cathedral, I began to explore the Catholic faith with the chaplain at the University, Fr Philip O’Dowd Philip was very challenging in terms of not simply accepting the faith but questioning it, exploring its riches and challenges and going deeper into its meaning and consequences for life He also had a wonderful ability to link the faith to art and music and travel, something for which I will always be grateful
I was received into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Chaplaincy Mass in Advent 1993; it was a wonderful moment in my life as I had been supported on my journey by the members of the Catholic Community at the University. I continued to have fruitful discussions with Philip about our faith and over time, I began to discern the small seeds of the priestly vocation.
What I realised more than anything was that the voices of others could often see things in me that I couldn’t see in myself. Memories of past conversations took on a new significance, and my friends and colleagues noted things about me that I had never thought of before I am not special, nor was I a devoutly spiritual person, but the regularity of daily prayerful reading of the scriptures and Mass began to nourish those seeds that had been planted many years ago
I embarked upon the vocations’ discernment programme in the Diocese and was sent to study for the priesthood at the Venerable English College in September 1995 I enjoyed living in Rome and discovering the riches of living in another country alongside the studies and common life that the seminary offers I was ordained a priest by Bishop McMahon in July 2001.
One of the most important things I have learned over the years is that the vocation pathway for everyone is different; it is not one size fitting all. The common theme is that all should lead to a deep relationship with the Lord, who is the source and goal of all we do as disciples. If we start doing things for ourselves, we have left the pathway. But when we give of ourselves to the Lord, we gain a rich panorama of the world around us.
The other thing is that a priest brings the Lord to people and leads the people to the Lord All priests must have a deep concern for the people of God and a desire to be a fellow pilgrim with them on the journey through life, giving example to them in the spiritual life and being a good teacher of the faith which we have received as a gift from the Church Underpinning all of this is a devotion to the Mass, regular confession and the daily life of prayer Hopefully through using these spiritual gifts of the Church, all of us will discover the distinct vocation that God has called us to fulfil
FATHERNEIL PEOPLES
I was born in Leicester into an Irish Catholic Family and going to Mass and saying prayers at home was part of family life.
As a child, primary school age, I remember going home and up to my bedroom with a rich tea biscuit and a glass of ribena and playing the priest, saying the words that I had heard my parish priest say that morning
‘I HAVE LEARNED OVER THE YEARS THAT THE VOCATION PATHWAY FOR EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT; IT IS NOT ONE SIZE FITTING ALL.’
25
‘WHEN
As I got older, thoughts moved towards being a lawyer, politician or teacher, I left school and worked in accounts I still went to Mass at weekends, didn’t really pray that much during the week and attending Mass had become more of a habit rather than an action of love
I then saw an advert in the bulletin asking for helpers to go with HCPT to Lourdes with a parish group This would be a turning point, being with other young people, praying more than I had ever done before and being able to spend a little quiet time in the Grotto Seeing the priests around Lourdes, those thoughts of the primary school child came back – I could do that!
I’d love to say after that one visit to Lourdes, I came back and applied for the priesthood but that’s not what happened. I tried to block those thoughts, to block out the voice of the Lord calling me to be a Priest. I was not worthy, I was not clever enough and certainly not Holy enough!
‘In reality it took many more pilgrimages to Lourdes and the impact of the death of St John Paul II He had been the only Pope I had known and I found myself so caught up in the drama of his last few days On my next visit to Lourdes I promised our Lady that I would look in to it, but if it didn’t work out she and her Son had to drop it!
The rest is history, I entered seminary, had a few wobbles (be a bit odd if I didn’t) and was ordained a priest in 2013
The hardest part of following my vocation was to listen to the Lord’s voice, to trust that this was a voice that I should listen to, a voice that knew me It would be easier if he picked up the phone and called or sent a text but when I look back, I can see how through other people, he was calling me – I just was not listening properly

So I encourage anyone who has even the slightest feeling about being a priest or religious, not to be scared to listen to the Good Shepherd’s voice, instead try and find some quiet time, reflect on the feelings you have He won’t bang on the door of your heart loudly – he will gently tap in the hope that you open the door to him
If these past few years of my life in seminary and as a priest are anything to go by – he will take you on the journey of a life time
FATHER LIMGAMSI
When I was 11, I left my home in Leicester to return to Cameroon, where I was born, to begin secondary school It was a boarding school for those who wanted to become priests
But I did not want to be a priest; it had never crossed my mind I, like many others, was sent to that school because its students produced very good results after the Year 11 exams But God has creative ways of drawing people to him.
Our daily timetable had a lot of prayer in it - which I resented at first - but over the years I grew to look forward to the time I would spend in church. God also used my love for reading to teach me about the saints, and how they were extremely happy trying to follow God’s plan for their lives.
I noticed that the priests I encountered, at school and beyond, were very happy. It also helped that around that time, many local priests were celebrating significant anniversaries, and I still vividly remember the beautiful homilies from those Masses on the priesthood Eventually, when I was 14, I started thinking that maybe I could be happy as a priest as well, and maybe I could do the same things I had read about
I LOOK BACK, I CAN SEE HOW THROUGH OTHER PEOPLE, HE WAS CALLING ME – I JUST WAS NOT LISTENING PROPERLY.’
26
But that was not the end of my vocation journey Since then, God has led me to many other places I didn’t expect to go to I returned to England sooner than I expected, then applied for seminary and was surprised to hear that the first year of my training was going to be in Spain Over the next six years I would get great joy from working in schools, prisons, and even on ships And I was ordained in December 2020, in-between two lockdowns
My advice to anyone discerning the priesthood is to remember that God is in control He needs our cooperation, yes, but he’s the one who calls us in the first place He has a plan He knows where he’s leading us, and if we are open to where he wants to take us, then we’ll find ourselves on a wonderful adventure
SISTER
LIZ DODD
The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace (CSJP) joyfully celebrated the first profession of vows of Sister Elizabeth Anne (Liz) Dodd on Saturday the 14th of October. The profession took place during a Eucharistic liturgy held as part of the Congregation’s Autumn Assembly in Nottingham, England.
In the presence of all gathered, Sister Liz said: “Living out of a radical dependence on God’s love for me, and understanding this love is universal and priceless, I will live against the lie that anyone is unloved or unlovable I will depend on my sisters, our charism and God’s love to hold me to the covenant that God makes with all life, and with a particular solidarity with the poor ”
“We are blessed to celebrate Liz’s profession of vows during our community assembly,” said Sister Andrea Nenzel, Congregation Leader “Assemblies are a time when we gather to celebrate our unity and renew our life and spirit Liz’s choice to commit herself to live the vows of poverty, celibacy, and obedience in the context of community is a powerful witness in today’s world ”
Sister Liz completed her novitiate programme, which extends over a period of two years The novitiate is an opportunity for the novice to deepen her experience of God through prayer, reflection, study, community life, and times of ministry It is also a time to deepen her understanding of the Congregation’s history, spirit and mission as peacemakers The congregation novitiate house is located at St Joseph’s House of Hospitality in Carlton, Nottingham
Sister Liz and the other sisters living in the novitiate house provide hospitality to asylee women and young people experiencing homelessness She also spent six months during her second year of the novitiate living with CSJP sisters in the United States, where she volunteered in an adult medical day care for people experiencing learning difficulties and disabilities in New Jersey and at a shelter for homeless families in Washington State
During her novitiate, Sister Liz has found herself drawn to what she describes as the “expansive spirituality” of the Congregation. “A very great part of my discernment has been noticing what moves me ‘closer,’ to God, rather, what frees me to experience God more fully,” said Sister Liz. “Living as a Sister of St Joseph of Peace has done that abundantly. For me, I find that spirituality to be most fully expressed in work among those experiencing poverty and people on the margins.”
Sister Liz was born and grew up in Oxford, England She studied Theology at Magdalene College, Cambridge, before embarking on a career in journalism: first as a music journalist, then as a travel writer for National Geographic (Traveller UK), The Guardian and Independent She was home news editor at The Tablet, the International Catholic weekly, between 20162021, with a brief sabbatical to bicycle around the world She became a Candidate for the vowed life with the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace in November 2020 and a Novice in October 2021 During her second year of the novitiate, which focuses on ministry experiences, Liz returned to writing for The Tablet as a regular columnist

“Formation is a life-long process as Sisters participate in the mission of Jesus Christ through the vowed life,” said Sister Margie Fort, Congregation Novice Director “As a professed sister, Sister Liz will respond to this opportunity daily by the continued integration of her prayer life, community life, and ministry ”
The Sisters of St Joseph of Peace, founded in 1884 in Nottingham, England by Mother Francis Clare (Margaret Anna Cusack), are an international community built on a rich heritage of promoting social justice as a way to peace Sisters and associates minister in education, health care, religious education, parish ministry, social justice, spiritual direction and peace ministry in the United Kingdom and United States For more information, visit the Congregation website at www csjp org
SISTER BERNADETTE
The seed of my vocation and faith journey were nurtured within my family home in the west of Ireland from a young age, through my mother’s kindness and compassion in reaching out to others around her
At the age of seventeen, I started to feel a call to Religious Life through my involvement in a weekly prayer group at school During this time, I started to experience a deeper desire to pray in different ways and had a thirst to read and pray the Bible with a deeper meaning.
Later during teacher training, the call to Religious Life was becoming clearer. Having read the story of Nano Nagle’s life and her total self-giving love for the poor I was inspired to explore the calling to be a Presentation Sister, entering a deeper dialogue and discernment.
‘AT THE AGE OF SEVENTEEN, I STARTED TO FEEL A CALL TO RELIGIOUS LIFE I STARTED TO EXPERIENCE A DEEPER DESIRE TO PRAY’
After two years of formation, I returned to my ministry as a Primary Teacher in Bicester, Huddersfield, and Birmingham I loved this work and especially working among different cultures in Huddersfield and Birmingham, mainly African Caribbean, Muslim, Hindu, Sikhs, African and Vietnamese families who all enriched my life with their deep experience of culture
At present, I am involved in pastoral ministry with Travellers and Gypsies which is outreach work to those on the peripheries. Supporting the sick, elderly and needy is also important to me in my life.
Being a Presentation Sister at this time gives me the opportunity to be part of many people’s journey in life and I am enriched each day by the many encounters I have with people as I am called to live out in my life the charism and vision of Nano Nagle.
