Friday Brunch Firstly, let me start off by saying this is hands down THE best family brunch we have experienced. Kids have not one but two dedicated play rooms, fully equipped with colouring pads, computer games, their own brunch station, dress up costumes and trained careers. The playrooms are that good we didn’t even see any kids throughout the duration of the brunch.

Friday brunch at Rosewood Abu Dhabi offers a selection of international fare. Dishes have been carefully crafted to offer a delight for the eyes as well as the taste buds. The brunch isn’t the biggest brunch in the city but what it lacks in size it overly compensates in quality and service. This intimate brunch offers a diverse variety of cuisine. Guests can enjoy everything from foie gras, pasta, Asian, Arabic and Indian cuisine. The brunch does have a Spanish influence with dishes such as tapas and paella not typically found at other brunches in the city. This is no surprise as Chef de Cuisine Francisco Sanabria has over 14 years of experience attained at some of Spain’s most renowned restaurants. Chef Francisco Sanabria started his career with an apprenticeship at the Michelin three-star Akelare in San Sebastian, following which he joined the Michelin three-star Sant Pau in Barcelona as Chef de cuisine. Chef Sanabria served as a chef consultant when Sant Pau opened a branch in Tokyo, with the restaurant achieving an impressive two Michelin stars shortly after opening. Francisco has been a part of the success of the Michelin two-star restaurant Moments, in the Mandarin Oriental, Barcelona as well as the Bar Canete, where he was in charge of this prestigious kitchen.

From the tapas selection, we choose the crab salad with avocado puree. Light and refreshing this is the perfect start to our brunch experience. Up next are the oysters, we love oysters therefore are particularly interested to try the ones on offer today.

Tsarskaya oysters are Russian oysters, these are much larger and meatier than the standard Irish oysters found at many brunches. These oysters are sensational, plump and meaty we soon ask for a second helping. We would return just for these oysters, by far the best we have tasted. We move onto the foie gras, served on a slate plate the presentation is astonishing, presented on the rustic bread sits the desirable foie gras, drizzled in mango chutney, we are salivating at the mere sight of it. The flavour does not disappoint, this is definitely a ‘mmm’ moment. Given that the weather is a bit cold today we are unable to enjoy the brunch to its fullest however a nice warm veal stew is on hand to keep us feeling warm and cosy. Pieces of veal flake in our mouth and almost dissolve to the touch, the stew is healthy comfort food at its best. The seafood paella is a must try, it’s been a while since we enjoyed a proper paella, packed full of tasty seafood this dish will have you reminiscing of that summer in Spain.

We also enjoy the ceviche, Arabic mezze and the butter chicken masala. We really could have kept on eating all the dishes were that good. However, we did have to leave some space for dessert, having passed it on the way we already knew what we were looking forward to, a freshly made crepe topped with nothing less than Nutella, served with an Americano.

Tamba Normally when people say ‘you must try this restaurant’ I tend to roll my eyes and dismiss it. This is probably why it’s taken me so long to visit Tamba. I was waiting for the hype to die down, the only problem is the hype doesn’t seem to be going away. Naturally, curiosity finally got the better of me and I decided to go and see what the fuss was all about…. I’m so glad I did!

Tamba is located at The Hub in The World Trade Center Mall on level 6. The Hub has its own separate entrance and offers valet parking, which is complimentary providing you get your ticket stamped after dining.

I instantly fall in love with the décor, large copper bells hang from the ceiling, illuminated by the soft golden lighting, the tones set a relaxed ambience. The copper elements echo throughout Tamba, even the name itself means copper in Hindi. The large open kitchen adds an element of theatre for guests to enjoy. Although the restaurant itself is spacious, tables are set to offer privacy, partitioned with chain curtains and timber latticework.

We decide to dine outside on the terrace to enjoy the city skyline. The waiter arrives, he talks us through the menu and makes a few suggestions. The waiter is extremely knowledgeable, he talks about the dishes with genuine enthusiasm, we can’t help but get excited ourselves.

The food is served sharing style and comes out as prepared. First to arrive is the King Crab Puri, a take on Pani Puri. Mini hollow Puri bread has been shaped like a crab shell and stuffed with crab meat, the lime and mint foam sits proudly on top, consumed in one bite, an explosion of flavours occurs. Next, my personal favourite, the Seared Salmon, Anardana and Citrus Explosion.

The Seared Salmon is exceptional, the flavours taste almost caramelized. This dish is rich, zesty and alluring. The Tiger Prawns, Coconut, Mirchi arrive shortly after. Large plump tiger prawns are engulfed in a symphony of flavours. The coconut phases out the otherwise dominate flavour of the mirchi allowing the dish to offer a variety of complexed flavours without having us reach for the water. The Lamb Chops are equally as enjoyable. Although typically known to have little meat and a lot of fat, Tamba has managed to source top quality lamb chops and we are thrilled. We also try the Dal. Dal is one of those dishes you can find throughout the city but its quality varies greatly. We can honestly say that the Dal at Tamba is currently the best in the city. The flavours feel like a hug in the mouth! Be sure to order with the garlic naan and don’t worry who’s looking, mop up every last bite.

Leave some room for dessert, even if you share, you must try the desserts. Inspired by a tale of love and heartbreak Tamba’s desserts are nothing short of sensational. My personal favourite is Mumtaz, a strawberry yogurt parfait with ice halwa, rose and pistachio reduction and strawberry confit.

If you are having a few beverages and would like a few light tasters, we suggest you try the dishes from the bites section of the menu, they tend to be easier to pick up. If you are planning on dinner we suggest you explore as much of the menu as possible, if you order one main dish and two other dishes per person that will be enough to leave you satisfied. But whatever you do, do not leave Tamba without trying the desserts.

Tamba does live up to the hype, the team are punctilious when it comes to a guests experience. The chefs at Tamba have perfectly balanced flavour with texture to ensure plenty of ‘wow’ moments. The level of detail in everything you see, taste and experience is meticulous. Tamba is not a fusion restaurant, as some have described it, Tamba is much more than that. Tamba offers progressive Indian cuisine infused with the multicultural influence of the modern generation. As we grow, travel and experience new cultures Tamba itself interprets this onto a plate, creating a recipe for success.

Castles, mountains, lakes and great food, welcome to Ireland. Given that some of us will be celebrating St Paddy’s Day this month we thought we’d share with you some of our favourite restaurants, must visit food festivals and hotels in Ireland.

Food Festivals Around Ireland March Dublin Bay Prawn Festival Award winning restaurants around Howth’s will be serving your favourite prawn dishes in bite sized portions. Loads of stalls, family entertainment and music to bop along to as you wander about the well-organized festival.

April All Ireland Chowder Cook Off Chowder is on the menu of most Irish restaurants, every year Kinsale, an attractive port on the south coast, known as Ireland’s “gourmet capital”, and the starting point of the Wild Atlantic Way, holds a competition to find the “All-Ireland Chowder Champion”. Enjoy Taste the Wild Atlantic Way Street Food Festival, an open-air street market with food stalls, live music and family fun.

Connemara Mussel Festival Originally established to promote the excellence of the mussels of Killary Harbour, the festival has grown to become a celebration of local people, food, culture and heritage and is recognised as the premier food event for Connemara. One of the first festivals each year on the Wild Atlantic Way, it showcases the very best Connemara has to offer. A true feast for the senses: taste and smell beautifully cooked local produce; see unparalleled views of the Connemara land and seascape; hear sounds of music, dancing, talks and theatre; feel the ambience; and above all enjoy the experience!

June Listowel Food Fair The Listowel Food Fair is one of the longest running food festivals in Ireland, it aims to showcase Kerry’s culinary scene through a range of demonstrations, tastings, competitions and workshops. Other popular events include Literary and Food Taste Trails, Wild Food Walks and there are a number of awards, like the Kerry Food Hero award.

July Féile na Mara Achill Island Festival of the Sea. Taking place throughout the month of July on Achill Island, Féile na Mara is a culinary celebration of Achill’s rich heritage with the sea and it showcases the bountiful harvest of the Atlantic Ocean.

August Beatyard 80’s music acts and performers compliment the permanent street food yard on South Richmond Street, Eatyard. The event will host over 100 food vendors, demos, food competitions, cooks and stands.

Dalkey Lobster Fest Dalkey is a great place to dine and entertain, this festival aims to highlight Dalkey’s local heritage.

Local seafood and global jazz sensations make it a great weekend with lots to see and do for free.

September A Taste of West Cork West Cork is where much of the best food that is grown and produced in Ireland comes from. Many hail it as the capital of food in Ireland. The festival boasts food markets, demonstrations, competitions, dinners, brunches, banquets, food-tastings, talks, exhibitions, children’s events and more.

October Taste Cork Week Taste Cork Week sees venues creating dishes, menus and events inspired by Cork produce, history and culture. A celebration of what Cork has to offer is guaranteed.

November Bite Food Festival The festival features top chefs and food experts as well as a huge range of producers, who are there to sell, sample and educate people about their unique products.

Roberto’s Abu Dhabi lau I will just begin by saying that I will be going back to Roberto’s Abu Dhabi and it will be very soon.

Italian Executive Chef, Francesco Guarracino, is dedicated to offering the classiest Italian food in the city, with the most relaxed atmosphere and top of the line service to match.

Roberto’s Abu Dhabi sits below the Rosewood hotel, in the high-end Galleria Mall, on the newly built Al Maryah Island. Roberto’s feels like a Milanese restaurant sitting on the Italian Riviera, meaning it pulls in an upbeat, city-dwelling, fashionable crowd that come for the waterfront views and the incredible food. The restaurant is sophisticated, with delicate glassware and crisp white napkins on modern linen-less tables. There is both indoor and outdoor seating with one flowing into the other.

On this clear Friday afternoon I was there specifically for the newly launched Andiamo Brunch. This brunch is very different from most other brunches in the city, as it is served directly to your table. You can relax with your family and friends, not having to worry about getting up to refill your plate and your server will only start your next course when you are ready, so that you determine your perfect pace.

The meal begins with a generous array of appetizers from either the Mare “Sea” or the Terre “Land” selection (or a mix of the two). The spinach salad with toasted pine nuts, gorgonzola, apples and crispy veal bites will leave you realizing that you would have eaten a lot more spinach in your life had it been prepared like this. The crispy calamari are melt in your mouth delicate and the Trilogia di Crostacei (seafood salad) is light and refreshing. You might also be surprised with an off the menu serving of their bubbling hot Margherita pizza. Like eating with a typical Italian family, Roberto’s will not let its guests leave without a completely satisfying meal.

After the appetizers, a piping hot and creamy mushroom risotto is given its final stir at your table on a large slab of Grana Padano cheese before being plated before you. We were also given a generous dish of Cacio e Pepe on thick homemade fettucine pasta. You choose your main course when starting the meal and the server will let you know before the kitchen begins its preparation, so as not to rush your enjoyment of all that is before. The entree offerings are separated again into Sea and Land and also vegetarian with three options in each category. They are the perfect size and not too intimidating after already having tasted so many wonderful dishes. The charcoal-grilled Seabass is a favourite, offering two tender caramelized chunks of fresh fish.

The key to Roberto’s Andiamo Brunch is that you must become Italian, at least just for the day. You must enjoy relaxing in the moment of the meal. If not, you risk reaching the dolce (dessert) course far too quickly with no room left to taste the incredible spread of Italian specialties. As the only portion of the meal that is buffet style, the vast array of desserts is displayed along the large bar in the lounge.

The idea is that the guests have the option to move from their tables to the lounge where they can recline with a few sweets, a strong coffee and listen to the DJ’s upbeat lounge music for the remainder of the afternoon. What better way to end this incredible meal than by drawing it out as long as possible.

Located in the Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel, Taverna, a sports café and restaurant offers a relaxed casual dining experience. Guests can choose to sit indoors or on the large outdoor terrace, which boasts spanning coastal and garden views.

Inside the restaurant are large wooden tables and low hanging lighting, sports memorabilia is dotted across the walls, adding to the sporty theme. A large pool table is on hand to keep you entertained as you enjoy a few bites and beverages. Four giant HD screens showing all live major sporting events make it a great option for sports fanatics.

Today we are here to try the two new specials chef has been creating. Firstly, the Chicken Breast ‘Frosty’, sliced chicken breast coated in corn flakes (that’s right, it’s not a typo, we’re talking about actual corn flakes) pan fried until golden brown and served with sweet potato fries and butter corn kernels. We love this creativity and the best thing is that it actually works, because the chicken has been pan fried it means that the corn flakes remain crispy, who wants breaded chicken when you can have corn flake chicken? Chicken Breast ‘Frosty’ will be the special for March.

Next up the BBQ Beef Tepanyaki, selected flattened beef loin, marinated and grilled to perfection, sliced and served with Asian vegetables on top of steaming fried rice. Nothing flamboyant about this dish, yet none the less another tasty delight to sink your teeth into. BBQ Beef Tepanyaki, will be the special for April.

The dishes at Taverna are extremely affordable and nope, they haven’t skimped on the quantity or quality. 55&5th, The Grill Inspired by the address of the original St. Regis New York, 55&5th, The Grill offers a classic, upscale Manhattan-style grill and lounge, complete with an outdoor terrace, private dining room, cellar and personal sommelier.

The décor is luxurious, high ceilings and deep blue and purple shades set a refined tone.

Although 55&5th oozed luxury the menu is rather reasonably priced, depending on what you order.

Recently we experienced 55&5th’s Under the Tuscan Stars menu. Priced at AED 395* the menu consists of 3-courses all with grape paring. For starters Minestroni, mains Steak Fiorentina and dessert Cioccolato Zuccotto. The Steak Fiorentina is one of the best steaks we have tasted in Abu Dhabi, a Wagyu tenderloin, our knife cut through the steak as if it was cutting through butter.

55&5Th, The Grill, The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, 02 498 8888 Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill Award winning celebrity chef Marco Pierre White Steakhouse & Grill is one celebrity chef restaurant that has stood the test of time. Its stylish interior design includes a back lit ‘flame’ wall, that sets the tone for a romantic evening. The menu is more on the expensive side but you are dining at a celebrity chef’s restaurant, so it is expected. For starters, we would recommend the Foie Gras, for mains try the Master Kobe Marble Score 9+ and for dessert tuck into a zesty Lemon Tart.

The Super-Aged Meat menu features an array of cuts from USA 150 Day Grain Fed Beef to Stockyard Certified Australian Angus (CAAD) 250 Day Gold Grain Beef. If that isn’t enough to have you salivating, then why not try the Connoisseurs Choice Menu. Boasting cuts like the Japanese Miyazaki and the Blackmore Marble Score 9+ Rib-eye not found anywhere else in the city. Azza Explores Rouge, Hilton Capital Grand Hidden away in Hilton Capital Grand guests can find Rouge one of the many great dining options available at this stylish hotel. I was recently invited to experience Rouge. First impressions, I really like the hotel, it has an array of options in terms of dining and nightlife. Rouge itself is cosy and warm, plus the entire hotel is made of glass ensuring every seat is a window seat. Now let’s move to food, which, of course is the most important aspect of any restaurant.

We were given a set menu which comprised of a choice of two starters, two main course and one dessert.

For starters, an Asian Roasted Tomato Soup, within the soup you could just make out a hint of lemongrass, mixed with ginger, basil and coconut milk it was delicious. After that the Grilled Duck, which had a great mix of quinoa and beetroot with pomegranate seeds in sesame yoghurt dressing, an incredible mix of flavours that just complimented each other.

By this stage I was already starting to feel quite full… and we’d only just finished the starters.

Main course offered two options Prawn in Coconut and Honey Glazed Chicken.

The Prawn in Coconut was beautifully presented in a coconut shell. What really made this dish special is that the pan- seared prawns were cooked and served in the coconut shell. The blend of rich and mild oriental spiced sauce just enhanced the smell and flavours offering a delight for our entire senses.

Although a simpler dish, I love chicken and the Honey Glazed Chicken had me going back bite after bite. A simple grilled chicken breast with sautéed Asian vegetables and honey glazed sauce, simple, yet bursting with flavour and texture.

And finally, everyone’s favourite part, dessert, Coffee Jelly, served in a chocolate bowl. Jellied coffee with lemon zest, an awesome touch to break the coffee flavour, garnished with mint leaves and nuts. What a perfect way to end the night.

Overall Rouge offered a great dining experience, with the food and service being on point. Rouge is a great venue for couples, families as well as for a ladies outing. This Asian menu can satisfy everyone’s taste, you can always find dishes on the menu that you would like but with a touch of Rouge.

Egg Shack, eggDiscovering new places to eat in Abu Dhabi is always a bonus, it’s not all about swanky fine-dining, there’s a bold up and coming independent cafe scene and we’ve discovered an egg-cellent new venue.

Egg Shack is a cafe entirely devoted to eggs, every type of egg dish is available. With a variety of all-day breakfast combinations as well as savoury and dessert dishes you’ll be sure to find something you like on this menu.

I’m a breakfast girl so I ordered my favourite poached eggs on English muffins, which were delicious and came with a roasted tomato and a small salad. My dining companion opted for Egg Shack’s own interpretation of the burger, sliced Wagyu steak served on a warm bun with caramelized onions, cheddar cheese and a special secret sauce and upon request, topped with a fried egg, of course. Getting perfectly cooked eggs can be a challenge but our eggs at Egg Shack were served just the way we like them, fully cooked white, with a runny yolk.

The all-day options have the usual eggy contenders like scrambled, fried, poached, boiled and omelettes but original variations on your standard egg dishes are also available. The pesto eggs benedict with smoked salmon, soft coddled eggs served on smooth potato puree in a glass jar and Eggs N’ Nest served on hash brown and topped with shaved parmesan all look delicious. I also liked the look of the Tangier Shakshouka, a Moroccan dish that another diner was tucking into.

For those with a sweet tooth, I can thoroughly recommend the egg-shaped Nutella filled waffles, light, fluffy, oozing with chocolate and served with rich chocolate sauce and fresh strawberries, a perfect sweet treat in the morning.

Egg Shack is a cool, intimate venue with a good-sized menu and friendly staff. White washed brick, exposed oversized light bulbs, wall-hung wooden crates, with signature golden eggs and cute French condiments all add to the quirky yet relaxed vibe.

Emirati owner Ali is not resting on his laurels, alongside the cafe he has a portable Egg Shack kiosk which has already debuted at the HSBC Golf Championship and the Red Bull Air Show with more events in the pipeline.

Ali said of his venture “Our main target is to serve healthy and good quality food, we can achieve this by only buying fresh meat and chicken, never frozen. He added, “All our beef is grass fed which contains no hormones and this assures less saturated fat in the meat itself.”

Although tucked away in Al Mushrif, it hasn’t deterred the foodie crowd from descending on this new venue.

Egg Shack is a cracking spot for breakfast whatever the time of the day. If you love eggs it’s time to pay this cute cafe a visit, its egg-ceptional.

Gluten-Fr Gluten-free dining options have never looked so good, this mini-guide showcases the capital’s best gluten-free establishments and those places that offer gluten-free menu options. As more and more people have specialised dietary requirements restaurateurs have realised the importance of offering gluten-free options. Education for chefs and staff about coeliac disease, gluten intolerance and offering food free from cross-contamination has become a more commonplace.

Tawa Bakery located within the Al Muneera beachside community is a completely gluten-free modern independent cafe with its own in-house bakery. The welcome mat declares ‘No Gluten Beyond This Point’ reassuring diners that they can confidently tuck into a 100% gluten free menu with no fear of contamination. There are so many sweet and savoury dishes, from delicious breakfast options to salads and smoothies along with freshly baked breads, pizzas and pasta. There are also some rather delicious cupcakes that go particularly well with the artisan coffees. The chic and cool interior is very Instagram worthy. It’s the ideal place for anyone with or without dietary requirements to enjoy a nice meal and take home a loaf too.

Tawa Bakery, Al Muneera Beach Plaza, 02 556 6900 Abu Dhabi’s first gluten-free cafe was Firin Bakery that originated in Kuwait, this little traditional home-style cafe is cosy with recycled wood furniture and pretty checked tablecloths. The menu is totally gluten-free with some dairy-free, sugar-free and egg-free dishes to cater for vegans, as well as those with specific food intolerances. There is a wide range of savoury dishes with an Arabic influence, homemade quiches, pasta and breads. Way too many cakes and cupcakes to choose from, as well as muffins and cookies which are the perfect accompaniment to the range of organic tea and coffees.

Limited options are also available in their Everyday Menu for wheat-free breakfast, salad and main course items (one in each category to be precise) along with some dairy-free and vegetarian dishes. The recognition of food intolerances and the introduction of specific dishes hopefully indicates that more extensive menu choices are in development. Well-presented fresh food with good coffee is the mainstay of Jones which has given them a loyal customer base across the five branches in the capital.

Jones the Grocer, various locations across Abu Dhabi Fancy a steak? BOA Steakhouse has an extensive gluten free menu jammed packed with appetisers, surf and turf, pasta and every type of side you can imagine. Along with all the great food options, BOA located at the Eastern Mangroves Promenade, offers diners a meal with a superb mangroves and cityscape views.

Welsh Cakes Recipe Welsh Cakes originate from the country of Wales in Great Britain.

These delightful cakes taste unlike any other cake. Welsh Cakes are considered a very special treat if given to you as a gift, since they must be made by hand, therefore require a great deal of effort.

They have gone by a few different names since their inception including their Welsh language names “cage bach” or “picau ar y maen” but also, they are known as “Griddle Cakes”, “Welsh Tea Cakes” and “Welsh Miner Cakes”.

Makes, 32 Welsh Cakes, Preparation time, 11 minutes Cooking time, 7 minutes

Ingredients • 450g plain flour • 170g caster sugar • 1 tsp mixed spice • 1 tsp baking powder • 100g butter, cut into small pieces • 100g vegetable shortening, cut into small pieces, plus extra for frying • 100g currants • 2 egg, beaten • splash milk

Method Firstly, take the flour, sugar, mixed spice and baking powder and place in a bowl then add a pinch of salt.

Then, with your fingers, rub in the butter and vegetable shortening until you get a crumbly, breadcrumb like texture.

Add the currants and proceed to work the egg into the mixture until the mixture becomes like a soft dough, if the mixture seems dry add a splash of milk.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured work surface and make about 2cm thick. Cut the dough into round shapes about 5cm wide, if you don’t have a cutter use a cup to press out the rounds.

Grease the frying pan with vegetable shortening and place over a medium heat. Welsh Cakes can be cooked together for about 3.5 minutes each side. Ensure that they are golden brown and cooked throughout.

If you can resist let them cool and enjoy with butter or jam.
