The Biggest Food Trends Of 2020

2019 gave us more Pan-Latin cuisine than we could eat, millennials made missing meals trendy (intermittent fasting) and everything average was covered in sprinkles and described as unicorn. With those trends (hopefully) left firmly in the last decade we caught up with our food forecasters to take a look at what we think the biggest food trends will be for 2020.

Organic As diners become more health conscious, we predict that more and more guests will be eager to eat only organic produce.

Although this means that restaurants will have to source organic ingredients, we are sure that restaurants will be eager to jump on this trend once they realise that consumers are happy to pay extra.

Vegan

Discounts Discounts are here to stay, we all know that one day the industry felt slightly empowered when the National Restaurant Association of India announced it was moving away from discounts, but it never quite had the impact many desired locally.

Ube Ube flavoured desserts are sure to be a hit in 2020 as the Filipino dessert comes into the spotlight. With a similar nutrition profile to the sweet potato the ube offers a sweeter yet nuttier taste.

What a year for vegan dining 2019 was and 2020 is set to be an even bigger year. In 2020 any restaurant not offering vegan options risks losing a large percentage of diners. Vegan dining will also heavily influence a rise in sustainable dining as guests become increasingly concerned with what they consume and if it has been ethically sourced and sustainably produced.

We’ve already experienced zucchini noodles and 2020 looks like it will be bringing us cauliflower pizza, plant based burgers and vegetable fries as many people look for healthy alternatives to traditional comfort foods.

Four hands, six hands and even eight hands chef collaborations are happening all over town. The trend, which we must admit we are quite fond of, shows no sign of slowing down. A plus for diners is that they will get to experience several unique dining experiences as chefs push themselves to their creative boundaries.

Whilst over the years we’ve been bombarded with fusion restaurants we predict 2020 will see many more speciality restaurants grace our culinary landscape. This trend is already picking up pace in Asia and we are sure it will soon appear in the Middle East.

Zero Waste Movement

I won’t be sad to see the end of chicken nuggets and mac and cheese on children’s menus. We predict that 2020 will see younger diners’ menus go through a radical re-engineering process as younger diners opt for healthier more ethical options.

Veganuary is aimed at inspiring people to adopt a vegan lifestyle for January.

What Is Veganism?

As described by The Vegan Society, ‘Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose. There are many ways to embrace vegan living. Yet one thing all vegans have in common is a plant-based diet avoiding all animal foods such as meat (including fish, ] shellfish and insects), dairy and eggs - as well as products like leather and any products tested on animals.

Aren’t Vegans And Vegetarians The Same?

No, vegetarians commonly choose to eat eggs and dairy as vegans would not. However, both would not eat meat or fish. Not to be confused with pescatarians who abstain from eating all meat and animal flesh with the exception of fish. In recent years we have seen pescatarians increase as more people are phasing out meat before adopting a full vegetarian or vegan lifestyle.

What Do Vegans Eat? Quite a lot it would seem. Although the phrase ‘plant-based’ doesn’t exactly conjure images of mouth-watering cuisine, once you start researching recipes, you’ll discover that there is a whole new culinary world waiting to be explored.

Why Go Vegan?

Upon my research I found that many vegans had decided to go vegan because of their love of animals, this wasn’t the only reason but for many it was the key motivator. For others their health played a key factor. Adopting a plant-based diet is one of the healthiest diets, many vegans report lower blood pressure and cholesterol than non-vegan. Some research has also shown

vegans to have lower rates of heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer. For many vegans’ environmental issues were also a concern, with so much land needed for cattle farming, deforestation and its impact on global warming continue to be a concern.

Well Known Vegans Many celebrities have adopted a vegan lifestyle such as, Brad Pitt, Lewis Hamilton, Woody Harrelson, Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, Ellen DeGeneres and Joaquin Phoenix, some of the best known celebrities.

Is Going Vegan Expensive?

In short, like everything in life, it is as expense or affordable as you want it to be. Vegan Dining Options Throughout 2019 veganism saw a drastic increase in popularity, a lifestyle change that is set to continue into 2020. 2019 was the year that saw vegan dining move out of small cafes and into many big brand restaurants with many restaurants offering vegan options on their menus and some even offering an entirely separate vegan menu. Today we are visiting Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai to experience their Caesars Imperial Afternoon Tea at the Roman Lounge. Traveling to Bluewaters is easy, with roads well signposted, the small journey lets you feel as if you are a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Before we begin, chef arrives to welcome us and talks us through the concept, his enthusiasm is infectious, and we are eager to begin. The three tiered serving stand display is as follows, pastries are displayed at the top, savouries in the middle and jams at the bottom, with scones being served warm upon request.

We commence with the savouries which offers a selection of five sandwiches, Brie De Meaux, Foie Gras Torchon, Spiced Chicken, Traditional Smoked Salmon and Baba Ghanoush. The Traditional Smoked Salmon is my favourite, but then I am somewhat of a traditionalist, light and fresh the Scottish Salmon is served on soda bread, drizzled with lemon horseradish cream and a sprinkling of fresh dill and salmon roe. The salmon roe does add an element of additional class and the lemon horseradish gives a refreshing zest to the taste. Surprising is the Baba Ghanoush, the rustic aubergine is encased between Arabic Khubz crispbread The creative genius behind Caesars Imperial Afternoon Tea is Executive Chef, Christopher Lester. Having cooked his way across giving it a delightfully crisp texture that is further enhanced by some of the finest culinary institutions in the world whilst working toasted sesame seeds and pomegranate. Those who enjoy nuts will relish the flavours of the Brie De Meaux, creamy, Brie de with some of the most innovative chefs of his generation, Meaux, is perfectly layered between slices of hearty pumpernickel Executive Chef Christopher Lester boasts over 30 years of experience in the UK, China and UAE including Rosewood London, bread complemented by a sweet, tangy fig compote and a nutty hazelnut crumb. The savouries are delectable, and the theme is Harrods, Caprice Holdings, The Savoy, The Dorchester, perfectly put across to guests in presentation and flavour.

As we arrive, we are warmly welcomed by the attentive team, the table is immaculately presented, awaiting our arrival. Caesars Imperial Afternoon Tea is inspired by the great conqueror Julius Caesar, this afternoon tea explores the exotic ingredients uncovered on his odyssey across Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. The menu incorporates the tantalising flavour profiles of sweet Turkish figs, rich North African cacao, Amalfi Coast citrus and smoky North African spices.

The service is warm and courteous, our waiter glides to and from our table effortlessly ensuring our tea is fresh and our teacup is always at an adequate level. Moving onto our sweet selection the playful theme of Caesars Imperial Afternoon Tea is emphasised in the design of the pastries. Our selection includes, The David Tower, Coconut and Mango Sphere, Strawberry and Crème, Chocolate Opera and a Lemon Meringue. I begin with the Lemon Meringue, hoping that it will also refresh my palette. Light and refreshing with a firm crisp buttery shortcrust biscuit base, the Lemon Meringue does what is expected. Everyone seems to be enjoying the Chocolate Opera, not being much of a chocolate person myself, I take my fork and place a small piece in my mouth. The moist chocolate sponge is divine, smooth and silky, it may have me reconsidering my opinion of chocolate desserts. Of course, it wouldn’t be Dubai if we didn’t have just a touch of gold, placed firmly on the front is a chocolate coin bearing the mark of Julius Caesar, dusted in gold.

Originally, I had thought that I would have enjoyed the Strawberry and Crème, fresh strawberry jam and Devonshire clotted cream burrowed within a light Victoria sponge with a white chocolate base and strawberry marzipan finishing, what’s not to like?

Personally, I find it a bit too rich but then again, I’m not one for overly creamy cakes.

My favourite, and one I would return for, is the Coconut and Mango Sphere, a decadent, African cacao chocolate sphere with a sweet mango centre encased in light coconut cream dacquoise topped with a melt-in-your-mouth chocolate sundial, absolute perfection!

Finally, saving the best for last the Freshly Baked Scones are placed before us. Guests have a choice of two types of scone, fruit or plain, we opt for a mix of the two. The scones are served with homemade strawberry jam, zesty lemon curd, rose petal and gold-leaf jelly and Devonshire clotted cream. I can’t begin to express my joy at the authentic clotted cream. I cut into the warm scone spreading a layer of strawberry jam followed by a small helping of clotted cream, superb.

Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon, Caesars Imperial Afternoon Tea offers a unique and memorable afternoon tea experience and something different from what you will find at other hotels in the city.

If you are looking for the most picturesque dining experience in the UAE, Mare Mare should be at the top of your list. Nestled a stone’s throw away from the shores of Saadiyat beach, Mare Mare is Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort’s popular Italian restaurant.

Mare Mare promises home-cooked coastal flavours of Italy set in a relaxing beach side location, with an indoor setting during the summer and an open-air terrace during the cooler season.

It is about 8.00pm when we arrive to Mare Mare and the restaurant is already bustling with guests. We opt for one of the larger tables at the back of the restaurant, which offers a more intimate dining experience. The menu is a good size and offers a variety of dishes. To begin I opt for the Parmigiana Di Melanzane, an oven baked eggplant gratin in tomato sauce, with parmesan cheese and fresh basil. My dining companion selects the La Burrata, a light and fresh burrata cheese with heirloom tomatoes drizzled in basil pesto and the Carpaccio Di Polipo, an octopus carpaccio with bottarga, lemon dressing and salad. The carpaccio selection does look very temping and for my next visit I will be sure to try the Carpaccio Di Gambero, a red prawn carpaccio with burrata and pistachios. All the starters are thoroughly enjoyable.

My Parmigiana Di Melanzane is excellent, the eggplant is nicely prepared, chef has finely balanced the parmesan to ensure just the right amount of eggplant to cheese in each bite. With Burrata being quite possibly one of the most ordered dishes in the UAE, Mare Mare’s option stacks up nicely amongst the best we have tasted.

We take a small break between our starters and mains to ensure we have ample space to enjoy our coming dishes. The service so far has been very attentive but not intrusive, a fine balance but one the team at Mare Mare have nicely mastered. Chef de Cuisine, Simone Federico is the mastermind behind the menu at Mare Mare. Having grown up in Abruzzo, Italy, since the young age of 13 Chef Federico knew he was going to be a chef. At 17 he was recognised as one of the top three young chefs in Italy by the National Federation of Chefs and became a qualified sommelier the following year. An international career followed, cooking in the Caribbean, Miami and the Middle East. Chef Federico has a philosophy of customer-centric adaptiveness – taking inspiration purely from what his diners want to see on their plates.

For mains I decide to try the Classica Pizza, a very simple but nice tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and anchovies. The pizza dough is fermented for a minimum of 48 hours to ensure the highest quality in both taste and texture. Wanting to try something less obvious my dining companion opts for the Tagliata Di Mattone, a chargrilled 300g rib-eye steak, served with rocket, tomato, parmesan, aged balsamic and confit cherry tomatoes. Admittedly I struggle with my pizza, having overindulged in the Parmigiana Di Melanzane means I only manage a few slices, however what I do eat, I enjoy. My dining companion, who clearly has a much better dining strategy than myself, enjoys his plate. The combination of the rich rib-eye paired with the almost sweet balsamic is, I am told, sublime.

Feeling slightly full but craving something sweet we all opt to share a dessert and enjoy a round of tea and coffee.

Overall Mare Mare is a fantastic dining destination, the location and the scenery easily make this venue standout, but chef and his team have done well to create a menu that equally demands its own recognition. What I really like about this restaurant is that it lends itself to whatever you are in the mood for, be it a casual pizza and a few light bites or make an evening of it and enjoy 3 sumptuous courses. The staff are friendly, confident and happy to make recommendations. Apart from the carpaccio, that I am slightly wishing I had ordered, another great reason to visit Mare Mare is its host of delectable dining offers, especially Lobster Day which takes place on Wednesdays from 12noon to 10.30pm, guests are invited to enjoy sublime pasta with a fresh lobster cooked to their liking for a true taste of coastal Italy, all for just AED 220. Our top travel destination for 2020 goes to the Seychelles.

Made up of 115 islands dotted throughout the Indian Ocean, just off East Africa, and home to numerous beaches, coral reefs and nature reserves, as well as rare animals such as giant Aldabra tortoises, the Seychelles is a breath-taking destination (and it’s only a short 4.5 hour flight from the United Arab Emirates).

The climate is relatively warm throughout the year with temperatures rarely dropping below 24°C or rising above 32°C. All but the remotest southern islands lie outside the cyclone belt making Seychelles a year-round destination for beach lovers.

A large amount of the annual rainfall falls during the months of December to February compared to other months. The average number of rainy (days with 1 millimetre or more rainfall) in December, January and February are 18, 17 and 11 days respectively.

It is also fairly cloudy at times during those months and therefore less sunshine. The weather is hottest from December to April, and the humidity is high - often 80% or higher. The months of May to October bring drier, cooler weather, and livelier seas - particularly on south-eastern coasts.

Cape Town

Our number two spot goes to Cape Town. Cape Town is a port city on South Africa’s southwest coast, on a peninsula beneath the imposing Table Mountain. Slowly rotating cable cars climb to the mountain’s flat top, from which there are sweeping views of the city, the busy harbour and boats heading for Robben Island, the notorious prison that once held Nelson Mandela, which is now a living museum.

Cape Town is known as a great holiday destination year round, a place where neither season really experiences extremes of temperature, thanks to prevailing winds. The summer months are from December to February. The days are generally warm to hot and dry, but the humidity is low. While winters are from June to August and tend to be wet and cool.

In addition to small sandwiches and a tower of freshly baked scones, diners can choose from a selection of immaculately curated (almost too beautiful to eat) desserts. There are some of his classics (including the Mogador), as well as seasonal selections, and with an attached cafe with a more substantial menu, this venue is well worth a visit. Gateaux d’émotions by Philippe Conticini One of the significant figures of French pastry has a standalone patisserie, which is classic and straightforward. We think his version of the famous Paris-Brest pastry is one of the best in the world, and definitely worth ordering.

Des gateaux et du pain by Claire Damon Like much of the culinary industry, women in the kitchen aren’t always abundant. Fortunately, talented Claire Damon is among the best of her peers. With a sleek black and mirrored interior, the pastry sits perfectly in a refrigerated display, beautiful in their simplicity. If you’re in the mood for something lighter, there is a wall of bread and viennoiseries to choose from. Fruit is often prevalent in her dishes, and Chef Claire only selects them at the height of their season. We suggest ordering her version of the almost too beautiful to eat J’adore la Fraise.

Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Malta sits just south of Sicily. Its warm climate, friendly islanders, magnificent restaurants and historical monuments welcome over two million tourists a year, making Malta one of the most popular European countries to visit.

Flights and Accommodation Flights are available from Abu Dhabi and Dubai with prices averaging around AED 2,500, however currently no direct flights fly to Malta, meaning that you will have to make 1 stop.

Malta offers a variety of accommodation which varies in rating and price. Visitors can choose to stay in hotels such as Le Méridien St Julian’s Hotel and Spa, historical buildings like Hotel Phoenicia or even self-serviced apartments. The type of accommodation will vary given the location you choose; the more popular tourist areas offer larger hotel brands, whilst in quieter areas you will find small independent B&B’s.

Climate Malta has a subtropical–Mediterranean climate and therefore has very mild winters and hot summers. Throughout the year you can expect temperatures to average 23 celsius dropping to 17 celsius at night. Summer starts from mid-April with temperatures averaging 19 celsius in the day and rising steadily throughout the 8 months. The warmest month is August where temperatures rise to 35 celsius. November is the start of the winter season with temperatures dropping to 17 celsius and most of the rainfall happens in this month. The sea temperature averages 20 celsius throughout the year making having a swim a tempting prospect.

Malta also boasts the highest sunshine duration in Europe with over 3,000 hours per year, doubling that of northern European cities.

History and Culture Malta boasts three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, Valletta and seven Megalithic Temples, which are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world and even outdate Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. Today, Malta is one of the friendliest countries you will ever visit. Family is very important, and you will find many families still sit around the table every evening to enjoy a meal together.

Valletta Valletta is the capital city of Malta and the commercial heart of the island. As you enter the city you will instantly be mesmerized by its sheer beauty. Small winding streets lined with boutique coffee shops and stunning cathedrals make for a timeless elegance. The best way to explore Valletta is by foot, so make sure you wear comfortable footwear as there is so much to see and do you will not want to miss a thing.

When in Valletta be sure to pay a visit to Caffé Cordina, one of Malta’s most acclaimed coffee shops. Founded in 1837 Caffé Cordina comprises of a restaurant, tea rooms, pasticceria, coffee bar and gelateria. If you can find a seat, be sure to sit outside and enjoy the old palazzo. Caffe Cordina produces its own hand-made, traditional sweets and pastries in-house. These are some of the best on the island and in our opinion the world.

Wanting to experience a local dessert we opt for a small honey ring. The small honey ring is delicious, made with black treacle, marmalade, orange peel, spices and honey it offers a variety of flavours and textures.

In need of a walk we head towards the Upper Barrakka Gardens built in the 1560’s the public gardens offer a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. This is a great place to relax and unwind. The terrace below is occupied by the saluting battery. It is perhaps the oldest saluting battery still in operation anywhere in the world. For almost 500 years, its guns protected

the harbour against naval assault. Its prominent position also ensured it becoming the island’s principal saluting platform.

From here, gun salutes were fired on occasions of state, to mark anniversaries and religious feasts and also to greet visiting dignitaries and vessels. From the 1820’s a gun was also fired at mid-day to signal out the exact hour of the day by which Ship Masters would calibrate their chronographs on board. These time pieces were used up to the early part of the 20th century to find the longitude at sea.

Later that evening we return to Valletta for dinner. We decide to visit Valletta Waterfront, originally built in the 18th century the waterfront now plays host to a selection of restaurants, retail outlets and bars. The front of the buildings are wonderfully decorated in a variety of colours. The colour of the door signifies what the merchants there would have sold, for example those selling iron would have had a red door whilst those selling crops would have had a green door, it enabled them to communicate when language was once a barrier.

After a short stroll down the waterfront we decide to visit Browns, one of the many dining venues located here. We decide to order one of their mouth-watering pizzas, handcrafted and baked fresh in the pizza oven. Topped with tomato sauce, tuna, black olives and onions the Al Tonno delivered a satisfying experience.

Food Maltese cuisine is the result of a long relationship between the islanders and the many conquerors who occupied the Maltese Islands over the centuries. This marriage of tastes has given local gastronomy a Mediterranean character all of its own, and nowhere is this mixture of culture and cuisine more strongly felt than in Malta.

Be sure to try these unique culinary delights when visiting Malta.

Pastizzi The nations favourite snack, pastizzi can only be found in Malta.

These delightful super flaky pastries are traditionally filled with either ricotta cheese or mushy peas. Served hot the scrumptious pastizzi can be purchased for a mere 4 dirhams. You can buy pastizzi everywhere, shops, bars, cafés but the best ones are from pastizzerias, normally run by families who bake them fresh throughout the day.

Bajtar Prickly pears are typically available during the summer months, traditionally peeled and then eaten by itself. The delicious fruit comes in a variety of colours ranging from red to purple and green to yellow and has a sweet, melon-like aroma. The fruit is enjoyed in places with typically warm climates.

Bigilla This traditional dish is often used like a spread or dip. Its ingredients and texture are like hummus. Bigilla is a staple part of any Maltese diet. A delicious, versatile condiment, it’s usually eaten with salad, platters, or just on its own. Made from mashed up brown or broad beans with lashings of garlic and herbs.

Seafood Being an island, Malta benefits from some of the tastiest and freshest seafood available. You’ll be able to find all sorts of catch of the day served fresh at local restaurants. Try the locally caught swordfish, often grilled or baked and drizzled in olive oil, superb.

Maltese Bread That’s right Malta even has its own bread. Ħobż tal-Malti meaning Bread of Malta is a crusty sourdough bread usually baked in wood ovens. It tastes nothing like any bread you’ve ever tasted. The best way to enjoy Maltese bread is to spread olive oil, rub tomatoes and fill with a mix of tuna, olives, capers, onion, bigilla and ġbejna, making another popular dish Ħobż biż-żejt.

Izu’s Aya Is A Must Visit

Chef Izu’s latest restaurant finds us at City Walk Dubai, in a space formerly occupied by Galvin in The Square. The name Aya translates to ‘beautiful’ in Japanese, and this idea is interpreted across not only the food but also the plating of dishes, and overall design of the venue. We’re delighted with the changes to the interior, which were originally quite dark, and find the lighter touch matches the tone of the space quite well. While the layout is nearly the same, the restaurant feels expansive and more welcoming.

The private dining area has had an upgrade, and the outdoor space is also a welcome addition, in the cooler months this is an excellent spot to stop and watch the world go by. Guests can choose from the patio located near the main entrance, or, if in the mood for people-watching, outside on the main street of City Walk.

Given the beautiful weather, we opt to sit outside. With attention to detail at every turn, the chopsticks rest on stylized holders, and the physical menu is also a work of art. The overall theme is a bit eclectic but reads Asian, and really, why not offer a selection of international dishes? We’re in the mood to try a bit of everything, and the staff are quite accommodating in providing suggestions.

To begin, we’re served the Edamame, and, a particular personal favourite, Padron Peppers. The Edamame is perfectly salted, and, should you feel in the mood, arrive with aji amarillo emulsion for

dipping. The Padron Peppers are exactly as I like them, blistered and a bit salty. The other starters follow in succession, an expertly sliced O-Toro, Wagyu Beef Tartare, Seaweed Salad, alongside a selection of Nigiri and Prawn Gyoza. The most unexpected of the appetizers is the Seaweed Salad, which is served on a bed of creamy tarama and served up with fresh baked nori kulcha bread. It’s a unique combination, and actually, we think it works.

The Wagyu Beef Tartare also has its own spin, served with lighter than air (and wonderfully moreish) rice crackers. We’ve had better mixes of tartare, but Chef Izu’s version is a contender, and we would order this plate again. The Prawn Gyoza are well mixed and accompanied by a sweet and sour sauce. There has clearly been a choice to create a unique Nigiri selection, and for this, we applaud the chef and his team. The presentation and taste of the platter is sublime. Overall, the undisputed ‘winner’ of our smaller dishes is the O-Toro, which is served simply. The fatty fish does not need a lot of accoutrements, and the kitchen is wise to leave it alone letting the protein shine on its own.

Sandos seem to be having a moment in the UAE, and while the rest of the menu is a knockout, the Wagyu Katsu Sando doesn’t quite hit the levels of our other favourites across the city. For us, the Aya barbeque sauce is just a bit too sweet and distracts from the protein.

Although there is a selection of sushi rolls, we decide to instead try some of the heartier main dishes. While there isn’t a lot of room left, we are served Miso Marinated Black Cod and the absolute star dish, the Spanish Octopus. While the Back Cod certainly meets expectations, it is the beautifully marinated Spanish Octopus that we would order again in a heartbeat.

While the inclusion of coriander emulsion is a bit much for the portion of octopus, the plating is beautiful. Sides arrive in the form of delicious Japanese Mushrooms and a generous portion of Broccolini.

If you only have one dessert, please make it the Brown Butter Ice Cream. The portion is massive, and it’s the perfect not too sweet finish to the meal. We both comment on the originality of the dish and can already see this dessert being instantly popular and becoming one of the signatures at Aya.

Would we go back? Well, it would seem rude not to. And Chef Izu has been busy! We’re also keen to visit Fika and see what he’s cooking up over there.

Would we go back to Amala? During the winter season, this would be a cosy location to enjoy on the Palm. There was a good crowd, and the service was both friendly and approachable. As with any above average Indian restaurant, there will be plenty of options for vegetarians -something we appreciate. There are also special deals devised as ‘tasting menus’ where guests can choose from dishes and have access to unlimited amounts. We suggest asking your waiter to learn more about the special.

The spa smells amazing and sets the tone for a relaxing and pleasant afternoon. In an exquisite environment of tranquillity, Ayana Spa offers an extensive range of indulgent body and facial treatments, for female and male guests, including Swedish massage, Thai massage or a four hands massage to body scrubs with natural herbs and sand from the Sahara Desert.

Designed as a tranquil sanctuary over two floors, Bab Al Qasr’s luxury Ayana Spa incorporates ancient Arabian techniques, healing herbs, and organic ingredients into its extensive treatment menu. With six therapy rooms, sauna, steam bath, jacuzzi and treatments, Ayana Spa is the perfect place to relax, revive, restore and re-energise. Offering a collection of luxurious, pampering services that are enhanced with state-of-the-art equipment, this spa helps guests achieve a greater state of well-being.

We each select a 60 minute massage from the extensive Ayana Spa menu. We waste no time heading to our separate treatment rooms and getting into our robes. Male guests are treated on the top floor of the spa whilst female guests may visit the lower floor, ensuring privacy for guests.

Our treatment room consist of a private changing room with a shower. The dimly lit treatment room offers a sense of calm from our hectic day. Before the treatment begins our therapist invites us to partake in a foot washing ritual, our feet are washed with warm water in a rose infused basin bowl. This is exactly what every spa should do for cleanliness before guests commence any treatment. The massage bed has also been heated, apart from this being extremely cosy it is also useful in warming tired muscles and greatly contributes to the overall result.

Today I will be experiencing a Swedish Massage treatment, which consists of a relaxing style of massage. The Swedish Massage technique employs light to firm pressure across a range of long, smooth strokes, with kneading, rhythmic tapping, vibration and friction. The therapist begins the treatment with my legs, before moving up to my back and arms and ending the treatment with an invigorating scalp massage. My companions Balinese Massage treatment employs stretching, kneading, skin rolling and alternating between gentle and vigorous strokes for effective muscle stimulation, this treatment is more beneficial for those that sit on a computer for long hours.

Both treatments are performed well, and the therapists are very professional and knowledgeable in their technique and approach.

The combination of the selected techniques ensures that any muscle tension we were feeling before we arrived is relieved. The following day we feel fully energized and our back, legs and arms feel much looser than they have in weeks.

Overall Ayana Spa offers a great selection of treatments, a very reasonable price point, knowledgeable staff, welcoming team and fully trained therapists that provide us with the relaxation and restoration we much desired from our experience. Ayana Spa team do the basics well, from a great welcome, ensuring we fill out the pre massage form to attention to detail with cleanliness.

Although the spa may not be as opulent as other neighbouring hotels you cannot fault the quality of our experience, we highly recommend a visit to Ayana Spa located in Bab Al Qasr Hotel and Residences, Abu Dhabi.
