NOW OPEN IN

welcome ... ...to the October issue facing the future together…SUPPORT IS BEST. Autumn is my favourite time of year and amidst everything else that’s been going on I’m making sure I take the time to pause and appreciate the wonders of the changing season with the trees turning golden and the crisp morning air. Thankfully, no-one seems to have told Mother Nature that there’s a pandemic going on! If our readers are up for it we would like you to join the Yaxley Gazette team on our virtual fund raising PRETTY IN PINK event and wear PINK (and I mean everyone) on 23 October – to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Details will be on our Facebook group in October. Finally, phrases like 'the new normal' are rapidly becoming overused, but I recently read these wise words: Before you rush back to normal, take some time to decide what 'normal' is for you, and what it is that you want to get back to. Whatever that may be, please stay safe and stay positive and don’t forget that the clocks go forward one hour on Sunday 25 October – some things never change! All the best,

yaxleyhub Yaxley Methodist Chapel

(Main Street, Yaxley)

WE WILL BE BACK !

(A misquote of the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Terminator. ) The re-opening of the Chapel is still difficult for us because of the limitations imposed because of the Covid 19 restrictions. There are ongoing discussions about how and when it will be safe to do so. But we will be back. Meanwhile our Sunday Services led by our Superintendent Minister Rev. Langley Mackrell-Hey are held via the Internet at 10.30 and can be found on Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook page and on YouTube later that day. Prayers are held at 8.30 in the morning in the same way. Often at this time of year we talk about the changes Autumn brings; in the weather, in new beginnings at Schools and Universities and the clocks. But this year there are constant changes almost on a daily basis. Many of us find change unsettling or even frightening but it can give us the opportunity to re-assess our lives and/or rearrange our thinking of what life is really about. One of the pleasures of this Summer has been the chance to spend more time enjoying our gardens and the surrounding countryside. Seeing the fantastic photos our talented local photographers have taken of the Fens' spectacular sunrises, sunsets, flora and wildlife has brought joy. We have taken time to appreciate that part of lockdown which has slowed down our pace of life. It has been a change which we could never have imagined and it has been unsettlingly, frightening, distressing and tragic for many people. It has also brought acts of kindness, sympathy, empathy and people putting others needs before there own. God Bless You and keep you safe until we can meet at the Chapel again. Minister: Reverend Shameela Jameelee-Samuel (01733 314147) Email: yaxleymc@gmail.com  / Yaxleymcfacebook

St Peter's Church Dear Friends Over last weekend, it seemed to go from summer to autumn literally overnight. I had to go searching for jeans and warmer cardigans and on some days, I managed to resist the urge to turn on the central heating, on other days, not quite so much!!! As I write this, schools are returning and my goodness what a lot of thought and effort has gone into our schools re-opening this term – well done to all those who work in our schools and to our families as well. I found myself the other evening singing the song autumn days by Estelle White, which we used to sing in school. It talks about all of the lovely things that we think about in autumn which is one of my favourite seasons – grass being jewelled, swallow curving in the sky, shoes so comfy that there worn out and they’re battered and the taste of apple pie. It made me smile a few years ago in previous parishes, when a school sang this at their Harvest Festival – it brought back many memories and it was funny to think that the song was passing down the generations. The chorus to the song says: “So I mustn't forget. No, I mustn't forget. To say a great big thank you I mustn't forget.” As we go into October, we will be celebrating our Harvest Festival. I have loved seeing the pictures that people have taken in Yaxley across the fields, of sunflowers, combine harvesters and amazing views of nature. This year, our Harvest Festival will be different due to our ongoing Covid 19 situation but we will still gather most likely through the wonders of YouTube to give thanks for all that God has given us. I have heard so many people saying this year, in all that we have individually and collectively gone through that they have learnt about the things that are important to them. They have learnt that we don’t need so much stuff, they have learnt that what we value is our relationships with each other in our families and with our friends. That we value and want to care for our planet and we want it to be able to live, breathe and continue for those that have just started school this term and for many generations beyond. As we go into this month, let us remember to say thank you to each other for the little things, the big things and everything in between. Come and join us for our Harvest on the 4th October at 11am as we give thanks for the work of our farmers, our produce packers, for distribution networks and workers and for our God who created the beautiful world we live in and those we get to share our lives with. With every blessing for this coming month. With every blessing, Rev Sarah (Vicar of St Peter’s, Yaxley) 01733 248 690 / 07498 230 858

HOLME WI The months have rolled on and we are now in September and we have finally had an informal WI Meeting held outside on the Green in Holme, socially distanced and all sitting in our own garden chairs with an optional flask of tea. Despite the change in the weather we managed to meet on one of recently few dry evenings, a bonus. It was a short meeting due to the evenings drawing in and a cool breeze which soon sent a few members heading home feeling chilly. The meeting was a good excuse to catch up with members' news and check they are all doing well and surviving. It quickly became clear that a lot of homemade gin was being made during Lockdown using a variety of berries, rhubarb and plums, and quite a bit of it was being consumed too! Now, we just carry on and wait for the situation to improve with a glimmer of hope that meetings indoors will resume in the not too distant future, providing we can navigate the mountain of paperwork and procedures to enable this to happen. Anyone wishing to contact us please email WIholmevillage@gmail.com Keep Safe and Stay Well. Alison McGuinness, President

Getting ready for winter As the colder months draw in, we begin using our fires, burners and chimneys once again to warm our homes. Chimney Fires continue to be a common occurrence in home fires in the winter months To ensure you keep your home safe from fire, follow our top tips below: • Whatever fire you have or fuel you burn it is vitally important to have your chimney swept to avoid a build-up of ash and soot • Avoid burning resinous woods (that quickly build up soot) • Only burn fuels suitable for your burner (eg. never burn anything other than wood in a wood burner) • Do not overload the grate/ appliance • Do not bank fires too high and remember to let them burn out well before you go to bed • Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the fire for hot sparks/embers • Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece which cause you to stand too close to the fire in order to reach them • Use a fire/spark guard to prevent accidental fires and make sure it has the kite mark or conforms to British/ European standards • Inspect your chimney breast, particularly the roof space. Make sure it is sound and sparks/fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks. Most importantly, always fit a smoke alarm and test your alarm weekly, and ensure a Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm is installed in the room where the burner is. Breast Cancer Awareness Month October 1 - October 31

G S BATHROOMS

Breast cancer it’s a scary thought and all too many women assume that it won’t happen to them The fact is though, that every ten minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. So, don’t be ignorant, during breast cancer awareness month 2020 go for a medical checkup, it might save your life. Early signs of breast cancer can be a lump in a breast, a painful breast or armpit, or a discharge from the nipple. Even if none of these symptoms present themselves, a doctor should be visited to be sure. A doctor will most likely perform a manual exam and send you for a mammogram. A mammogram examination is painless and only takes about ten minutes. If any of these symptoms do present themselves there’s no need to panic. Plenty of time, pain or a lump in a breast can be perfectly harmless. The pain can be a sign of a cyst or the lump can be benign. It’s always better to be sure though. If the mammogram shows a lump, your doctor will order a biopsy. This test will show if the lump is benign (harmless) or malignant (cancerous). If the lump is cancerous there’s still no reason to panic. Early detection is a life saver. By way of a simple operation the lump is removed after which the doctor will discuss further options with you. If you’ve never had a mammogram, make an appointment during breast cancer awareness month 2020. You can take a friend or family member with you and afterward you’ll have peace of mind.

B-Lines

TIME TO ACT

in Peterborough

B-Lines have now been mapped across the entire UK aiming to create and restore at least 150,000 hectares of flower-rich habitat. Peterborough sits in the centre of two intersecting lines so most of the city and surrounds is within the B-lines. Buglife in partnership with PECT are developing a project to deliver the Peterborough B-Line

6

B-Lines are an imaginative solution to the problem of the loss of flowers and pollinators. They are a series of ‘insect pathways’ running through our countryside and towns, along which we need to restore and create wildflower-rich habitat steppingstones. They link existing wildlife areas together, creating a network, like a railway, that will weave across the British landscape. Our bees, butterflies and hoverflies have suffered badly over the last fifty years, due to changes in land use because of modern farming methods, urban spread and new transport links. Since the Second World War 97%, over 3 million hectares (1.5 times the size of Wales) of wildflower-rich grasslands on which pollinators are dependent have been lost reducing pollen and nectar sources and

leading to a serious decline in the wildlife depending on wildflower-rich habitat. Pollination is worth over £0.5 billion per annum to the UK farming sector and replacing it with hand pollination would add over £2 billion a year to our food bills. A targeted extra charge that would predominantly affect fruit, peas, beans, soft fruits, cucurbits and similar. It is also critical for the survival of eight out of every ten wildflowers in our landscape. Making this happen will take time and will need farmers, landowners, wildlife organisations, businesses, local authorities, and the public to work together to create flowerrich grassland in the best locations. Even if only in a small way you can help; because small steps can have a huge impact if they all fall at the same time.

THE BIG BUILD 2020? The social enterprise Up The Garden Bath has been challenged by the environmental charity PECT to transform an underused area of green space, in the west of Peterborough, into a new garden. The aim is to create a multi-use area that can be used to grow produce, host educational workshops, and attract wildlife. The plan is for the garden to include innovative vertical planters to make the most of the available space. There will also be bathtub planters to create growing areas at a height that is easily accessible for all volunteers and children. Stuart Dawks, Director of Operations at PECT said: “We really want to demonstrate how unwanted materials can be given a new lease of life and become useful, rather than just being discarded and sent to landfill. We also want to create a community growing area that shows how everyone can create a garden with just the smallest of budgets.” PECT is a grassroots organisation that educates, inspires, and motivates individuals and organisations to change their behaviour to deliver a positive environmental impact. The charity specialises in using eco education and

awareness-raising to encourage behaviour change and collective action. The organisation approached Up The Garden Bath about transforming the area, knowing the social enterprise’s reputation for taking old and discarded materials and upcycling them into ready made garden planters and accessories. Up The Garden Bath strives to use 100% recycled and unwanted materials to give them a new lease of life and for environmental benefit. “Our aim is to renovate the area using only recycled, unwanted, donated materials and with the help and support of willing volunteers,” explains Dave Poulton, Founder of Up The Garden Bath. “We want to prove that – with a little creativity, imagination and a collaborative approach – gardening can be accessible and affordable for everyone.”

The social enterprise is calling for volunteers and donations of materials for the project. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Up The Garden Bath via info@upthegardenbath.co.uk or online at www.upthegardenbath.co.uk. For more information about PECT, visit www.pect.org.uk.

Yaxley Countryside Volunteers Secures Sponsorship The Yaxley Countryside Volunteers (YCV) has been in existence for thirty-six years, when four like-minded chaps embarked on a scheme of tree planting around the village. Their aim was to create and improve the many green spaces we now see around the village today. Reg Bingham the current Chairman of YCV was one of the four founder members. He has seen a huge change in the village with housing developments eating up the countryside, none the less this small band has continued its work in providing pleasant outdoor areas for the community to enjoy in partnership with Yaxley Parish Council. Reg has served as the Tree Warden for Yaxley for a number of years he brings a wealth of knowledge not only about trees but wildlife in general. Never a man to sit back and admire his work he can be found volunteering on The Great Fen Project too. One of Reg’s most recent successes was securing

a small piece of land donated by YPC on the Middleton Road Recreation Ground where assisted by other members of the YCV they fenced off this small area and planted a Community Orchard which consists of Apples, Pears, Plum’s, Hazel Nuts, Fig, Quince and Walnut. Other work carried out by the YCV enthusiastic members involved cutting a path through the Mere View wooded area, maintaining the pond at Pound Lane near the Church, assisting with the general tidiness of the cemetery. As machinery, and sharp power tools are in regular use it is important to keep safe. The group enlisted the help of a local company “Howsafe” to sponsor their Hi Viz vests. Clark Howe the Managing

Directoreagerly agreed to sponsor the group. Howsafe a local company established in 1978 that has had continual growth from one humble van in 1978 to a fleet of mobile shops today. This ISO 9000 Company specialising in quality products such as work wear, footwear, hygiene and cleaning materials to PPE all of which are readily available from the large stock levels held at their premises at 18 – 20 Challenger Way, Edgerley Business Park, Peterborough PE1 5EX. When presenting the Hi Viz vests to Reg, Clark said “it was his pleasure to help support a local cause which is doing so much in providing the village with well maintained green spaces for the greater community to enjoy”.

Making Tax Digital Making Tax Digital (MTD) will apply from April 2022 to all UK VAT registered businesses regardless of their turnover and to certain business income tax records from April 2023. HMRC have announced that Making Tax Digital (MTD) is to be extended to cover all UK VAT registered businesses from 1 April 2022 and to cover most business income tax records from April 2023. At present the MTD rules only apply to those whose UK taxable turnover is above the £85,000 UK VAT registration threshold. MTD compliance, with its requirement for digital records and use of compatible software to submit the VAT return may be an onerous requirement for micro businesses who may have only registered for VAT voluntarily – perhaps to obtain VAT refunds or to appear larger to their customer base. However, although there was little detail in the announcement, it is likely that the option to apply to HMRC for an exemption from MTD will also be available to these smaller businesses. An exemption can be sought if it is not reasonable or practical for the business to use computers, software or the internet to follow the MTD rules. The change will impact all businesses that are voluntarily registered for UK VAT because their UK taxable turnover is under the threshold, who are not at present required to comply with MTD. If they are unable to secure an exemption, MTD compliance will require them to keep VAT records digitally and use software that is MTD compatible. Some smaller voluntarily registered businesses may decide to de-register instead of complying with MTD. De-registration can however also trigger a VAT cost due to the rules about assets and stock on hand, so advice may be needed. We understand that although MTD compliance has been generally high, a significant minority of businesses that should be using MTD are not doing so. HMRC suspended their program of encouraging such businesses to comply for a few months due to COVID-19, but recently began it again. It appears that a major reason for non-compliance has been a misunderstanding - just submitting VAT returns online is not enough to be MTD compliant.

BLINDS IN HARMONY Blinds, awnings and curtains

The announcement of the extension in scope has fortunately been made well in advance, so affected businesses can think about what they want to do, weigh up the pros and cons of staying VAT registered and complying with MTD, as opposed to de-registering. Alongside the update on VAT, the Government has announced that from April 2023, businesses and landlords with business income over £10,000 per annum which are liable for Income Tax, need to keep digital records and use software to update HMRC quarterly through MTD. The Government has also confirmed it will be consulting later this year on the design of what the MTD system should look like for Corporation Tax. Many firms of accountants like us are making themselves ready for these new requirements and we look forward to hearing from existing and new clients if we can assist in any way to ensure you are fully compliant and ready for MTD.

fromthefarm “Heap high the farmer's wintry hoard! Heap high the golden corn! No richer gift has Autumn poured from out her lavish horn!”

Farm John Greenleaf Whittier

FROM THE

This year, more than any other year we can remember, the harvest season was a very tough one. With the constant rain last autumn and spring, our sowing was behind schedule and for some farmers, they were not able to sow their fields at all We stand with those farmers and think of them as we wipe our brow here in Village Farm and thank God we are able to start again. This year has been a hard one on many levels, as 2020 continues to surge ahead, our lives are still very affected by COVID. We’ve learned to pull together such as in war times, and for that we can garner a blessing from each other and understand that autumn is for being thankful for the harvest just past AND for looking ahead as we sow for a new season. We ‘sow’ on many levels and in many aspects of our lives. Perhaps there are dear family relationships and friendships which have been rekindled as a result

of lockdown zoom and facetime calls. Perhaps it is reconnecting with the family at home as we have had to isolate and ‘take cover’. Our perhaps, we are sowing a spirit of gratefulness as we realise how much we truly do need each other. This can be the gift of struggle, and for us as farmers, as a result of this difficult year we are renewed in our gratefulness to be able to sow and reap from this good earth. There are many work endeavors we are doing on the farm to keep pressing ahead in delivering food to all of our tables. LATEST UPDATE

HAMPTON HOBBIES AND GAMES We are busy preparing for the two big upcoming festivities, Halloween and Christmas. With so much uncertainty this year, Halloween is another event that we may all have to do differently to normal. Although we don't have any tricks, we do have plenty of treats for Halloween 2020. We have a new section on our website dedicated to Halloween Games and Puzzles so you can enjoy some Halloween fun with your family safely at home. We are a small independent business with over 70 games and 100 jigsaw puzzles in stock, that's before you look at our Art, Crafts, and Model Kit range too! As a local business, all deliveries to the PE7 postcode are free with no minimum spend so you can enjoy the benefit of having items delivered straight to your door without any stress. I'm pleased to say that so far we have been able to deliver all PE7 orders the next day. We want to play an important role in the community and in Peterborough and we were delighted to be able to deliver some much needed games to the local Dementia Ward at Peterborough Hospital. We hope you will take a look at our website, and we look forward to serving you soon. https://hamptonhobbiesandgames.co.uk/ John Howard Hampton Hobbies and Games

YAXLEY INFANTS

COVID-19 ADVENTURES 2020 As you know the UK locked down in March 2020 which meant we had to get creative when running guide meeting. So we took to Zoom meetings to keep our guiding going, we under took quizzes, played the pillow case game and the new favourite online game is Knife, Fork and Spoon (which is great fun and can be used for all ages). We also made mug cakes, clay models and armpit fudge (but best not do this again on the hottest day of the year – it tasted amazing but was more like cake topping than hard fudge). The guides all took on the challenge to work for badges at home these include, 75th VE day celebration and what guides did in the war, Geo-Caching, Whittling and Mixology to name just a few.

Now that the government has relaxed it rules we held our first face to meeting on 12 August – fully socially distanced of course. We under took a scavenger hunt and made s ‘Mores - marshmallows toasted over tea light then sandwiched between chocolate biscuits, which we all enjoyed. For the remainder of 2020 we plan to have a combination of face to face every two weeks (outside for now) but may start using our amazing building again once more lock down restrictions are lifted. On our non- face to face weeks we will continue with our Zoom adventures.

LITTLE ACORNS DAY NURSERY AND MONTESSORI SCHOOL We have had a busy month with the children settling in to their new classrooms. The children have enjoyed lots of autumnthemed craft activities and being outdoors; exploring the leaves falling from the trees. We are looking forward to celebrating Halloween when we will be having spooky fun and party games with our friends. If you would like to come and have a look around or are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

Despite the COVID pandemic and social distancing restrictions YIS were able to offer a 'meet your teacher' for those children who started with us in September. Parents were able to bring their children to the school playground where they met their new teachers and support staff whilst maintaining a social distance. It was lovely to see all of our new children before we broke up for the summer. Over the summer we went through lots of different changes. You may have noticed when you walked by our school or spent time in the park lots of scaffolding around our school building. After years of waiting patiently we finally managed to get to the top of the DfE building list. Work began on our roof in the summer holiday to re-felt, insulate and install new ceiling windows onto our roof. Unfortunately during the storms in late August we had a major flood. Members of staff arrived to find water-soaked furniture, carpets sodden and children’s trays full of water. Luckily there were a few members of staff who were able to come in at the drop of a hat to salvage what they could. Teachers then had into come in during

Floods, YIS Heroes and Welcoming our Children Back. the school holidays to get the classrooms ready for September. To all those Yaxley Infant School heroes (and you know who you are), thank You. Before the Summer holiday we received the sad news that one of our Teachers was diagnosed with a serious illness. One of the children in her class took it upon herself to raise money by running a marathon in stages. School staff even joined in running in the summer holiday! In next month’s issue we report how successful this Yaxley Hero has been in raising money. September saw children come back into school with smiley faces, a skip in their step and brand-new uniforms. It was lovely to see all our children after having had so much time off school. Reception children new to school also had a successful induction into school. Every year Reception children surprise us with their resilience and ability to cope with such a massive change in their young lives. A massive “Well Done” to all of the Reception children (and parents) for beginning their school lives in such a positive fashion. We look forward to nurturing our young learners in the years to come. 11 CLASSIC FILMS TURNING 30 IN 2020

Do They Hold Up? 1990 was 30 years ago, 30 years! When someone says about 30 years ago, I instantly think the 70s; I doubt I’m the only one who does that either! Ah, simpler times. 1990 gave us some really good, original films, but as they reach their 30th birthday, do they still hold their own against the films of today?

HOME ALONE

GOODFELLAS

KINDERGARTEN COP

Local boy terrorises honest burglars, if only! The fact that this film was outlandish with its violence when it came out; but in a funny kind of way, the story and the ensuing carnage would never have actually happened. That aside, the script, humour, acting and overall feel of the film means it stills holds it’s own against “comedies” of today.

A classic, and rightly so. This film just feels ageless. It looks, sounds, and reads like a modern film. It gives the likes of The Departed a run for its money and it certainly doesn’t seem like a 30 year old. The script and delivery of lines are still bang on, with the production and direction still give off the feel of a modern film. Absolutely holds up well. Classy film.

FBI Agent pretends to be a teacher, scars kids for life. Arnie does himself no justice with this film and his cheesy, trying to be a nice kind man act fails to hit the mark. It failed then and it doesn’t hold up now. The acting is wooden, the script bland and sloppy and the chemistry is still no better. Modern movies like Daddy Day Care etc all have a much more warmer feel to them. This may have been a hoot 30 years ago, but that’s where it should stay now.

Fun Fact: Macaulay Culkin ad-libbed the immortal line “you guys give up, or you thirsty for more?”

DIE HARD 2 John McClane defends airport against terrorists, blows most of it up. Bruce Willis is back and still looking haggard as hell. The script is good, and parts of the acting are just cheesy and lame. BUT… it still holds up against the likes of Fast & Furious due to its constant story arc and its relentless pursuit of being as “normal” as possible

TOTAL RECALL Again, the remake was shoddy and ill-conceived. The reason the original was so good was because it felt futuristic and reasonable in assumption of what the future would be like. Other than that, the acting was cheesy and over the top, the practical FX have definitely not aged well, which is a shame as that bug in the brain scene was amazing, and gross. The script was OK and the scenery were as good as they could be in the 90’s. Not really aged well

Fun Fact: The “futuristic” vehicles were actually Mexican Public Transport vehicles with a lick of silver paint and TV’s added to them

BACK TO THE FUTURE 3 Back to the past, again. The weakest of the 3 Back to the Future films, the film has actually aged quiet well. The use of practical FX in this film served it well and the minor CGI used is undetectable. Script is weak, but overall story arc blends nicely into the franchise and ends it very well, unlike others, *cough* fast and furious. Better than most similar films nowadays.

12

DAYS OF THUNDER Apart from a much younger looking Tom Cruise, this film holds up very well. The acting is crisp and a lot more believable than most modern films, like Fast and Furious. The script is still class and it has a “real” feel to it that is still believable. The production and editing of the film is smooth and realistic, making excellent use of tech that modern movies cannot seem to master. And lets not forget the on screen chemistry of Cruise and Kidman. They definitely didn’t fake that!

TREMORS Underground giant worm east folks in the desert “town”. It’s smart too. As much as I would love to say this has held its own, it really hasn’t. I love the film, but the practical FX looks very dated, the on screen chemistry feels strained and the script is a lot weaker than I remember. Kevin Bacon’s mullet cannot bring this film close to holding up unfortunately. Still good for a Sunday Evening watch though.

Fun Fact: Kevin Bacon says the film gave him terrible nightmares for years. They got so bad he would pick his wife up, trying to “rescue” her whilst sleep walking

MEMPHIS BELLE I don’t need to say much about this epic piece of cinema. The script is solid, the action and camera work is breathtaking and the acting is superb. The only downside is use of technology. This film absolutely holds up and would easily sit alongside Saving Private Ryan, Dunkirk and the like without looking out of place.

Fun Fact: Arnie was 4th choice for the lead role, behind Patrick Swayze, Bill Murray and Danny DeVito

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Oversized, pizza loving turtles follow rat’s instructions to kill masked vigilante. As much as I loved this as a 10 yr old, seeing this now is like killing my childhood memories. The practical FX are so sloppy and dated; it just doesn’t give a real feel to the film. Not that the remakes were ever better. The script is basic and the story weak. Doesn’t hold up against the likes of recent superhero/hero films.

PRETTY WOMAN Rich man woos prostitute, he gives her the world. Still a sopping pile bland trash, this films does not hold its own in my opinion, however there are many out there who would disagree. That’s fine. The script is bland and uninspiring; Roberts and Gere still lack any real chemistry on screen and the cinematography looks very basic in comparison to modern stories like this. That said, I can still appreciate that this is a watchable film on a Sunday Afternoon for those who like this kind of thing.

Fun Fact: Sandra Bullock turned down the lead role, as did 7 other leading ladies, before Julia Roberts was approached. So there you have it. what do you think?

Distant - Francis Reynolds

Besides my own practice as DenneyDesign, I work part time at Hampton College as Art Technician. Francis Reynolds, the artist I’m going to introduce you to today exhibits locally and nationally but also takes time to do weekly workshops with our 6th form art pupils; I will show you some of their work inspired by his teaching.

FRANCIS REYNOLDS Francis returned to education as a mature student in 2007 to study Fine Art and graduated with a BA (1st Class Honours) at Loughborough University in 2012. The intention at the start of Reynolds` education was to become teacher; as his experience of teaching others was successful and rewarding. However, with the support of his wife, family and the local Academy’s employing him as an Artist in residence and consultant, Francis can still be involved in the education of others together with continuing his practice. His paintings are held in Private collections throughout the UK and internationally. Francis’ practice can be seen to be quite destructive in as far as process. However, it can be said that the passive/ aggressive nature of the paintings lends themselves to the very nature of the human condition. His outcomes strive to question and reinvigorate the subject; its historical and contemporary context, together with consolidating ideas of deconstruction; an act of taking apart

and rebuilding. This may also highlight the deconstruction of conventions and what is expected from representational painting. Reynolds states: “We are all human. We all experience various happenings within our life-time; good and bad. Yet, we all bare the marks of these experiences, even if they are not all visible. Those experiences drive us forward; we evolve with change. We grow through knowledge pasted on by others and from our own involvements with life. Particular events may mark us and have a lasting effect, which we assimilate into our life. It is only upon reflection that we become aware of how and why these happenings and influences shape the way we are.”

Struggle - Francis Reynolds

Portrait for NHS Heroes initiated by Artist Tom Croft At the height of the pandemic, Francis offered NHS key-workers a free portrait; an initiative created by Tom Croft that recognised the considerable efforts of NHS staff. He produced three portraits and all were gratefully received.

PROJECT

Reach Out Beyond - Francis Reynolds

The project for this month is something started byJake Parker to get people drawing, and has grown to a worldwide movement. It’s called Inktober and gives you 31 titles, one for every day of October. You don’t have to do them all, you don’t have to do them in ink, just a doodle is fine or in any media you choose, if you like what you’ve done, you can post on social media with a hashtag. There’s also a website for inspiration. I’ve added a couple of pictures from last year, by some Hampton College pupils and me. https://inktober.com/

Fabulous Fungi Where can you find a wrinkled peach and a yellow brain? A foray into any wooded area to discover the world of fungi is an absorbing pursuit as gorgeous autumn is upon us and in the coming couple of months will gradually yield to winter. Nature reserves with even small amounts of trees or woodland such as Wildlife Trust in Cambridegshire's Lady's Wood or Thorpe Wood have wide varieties of fungi to discover and marvel at – some on trees as well as on the ground

One of the most important groups of organisms on the planet, fungi are easy to overlook, given their largely hidden, unseen actions and growth. Together with bacteria, they are responsible for most of the recycling, which returns dead material to the soil in a form in which it can be reused. Without fungi, these recycling activities would be seriously reduced – we would effectively be lost under piles many metres deep of dead plant and animal remains; without these strange and fascinating life forms, neither we, nor the inhabitants of native forests, would survive for long. Fungi have reproductive spores which are dispersed through the air. Under the cap of a mushroom are the spore-producing gills, while a puffball is a sack of spores, just waiting to be prodded or for an animal or bird to tread on it, resulting in a puff of spores, like dust escaping from a split hoover bag. The colour of the spores can be important in identifying the species of fungus – this can be given away by ‘bracket-forming’ species which grow from the side of a tree
trunk, depositing a coating of spores on the bark beneath. Over the next couple of months, coated in ice crystals during frosts or snow, fungi can be a photographic treasure trove. Of any fungus, the main body is usually hidden underground or on rotting wood - mushrooms and toadstools are only a small part of a much larger organism, and some fungus bodies can spread up to 15 miles across a woodland floor. Wintry wet dank weather helps to bring on the fruits of the fungi – the mushrooms, toadstools, brackets, puffballs and many other amazing shapes that these ‘creatures’ produce (recent genetic investigations have shown that they are nearer to animals than they are to plants), once they start to emerge from the ground, leaves or decaying wood. Dead wood is an exceptionally valuable resource, made use of by a wealth of wildlife, especially insects and fungi, and so is a key component of many of Cambridgeshire’s wooded nature reserves. The wonderfully named wrinkled peach, Rhodotus palmatus, is often found on fallen decaying trees and varies from delicate pinkish-apricot to deep salmon in colour, with a wrinkled convex cap which flattens with age. Yellow brain, Tremella mesenterica, is disc shaped and develops brain-like lobes and folds of soft, shiny flesh that wobble like jelly when knocked; it's tough, gelatinous bright golden yellow flesh makes it easy to spot in wet weather, growing on dead twigs and branches of broadleaved trees. While not fully understood, it’s clear that the nature of the trigger for fungal reproduction is influenced by weather and seasonal change. This year, a combination of warm temperatures and a good amount of rain is so far proving excellent for fruiting. A lovely film at the Trust's Overhall Grove nature reserve just north of Cambourne, made by Cambridge University PhD student Ellie Bladon, clearly explains fungi's amazing underground connections invisible to our eyes: view here www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQ5bXQDFET4 Wonderful woods to visit: Lady's Wood www.wildlifebcn.org/nature-reserves/ladys-wood Raveley Wood www.wildlifebcn.org/nature-reserves/raveley-wood Holme Fen, Great Fen www.wildlifebcn.org/nature-reserves/great-fen West Cambs Hundreds; four more ancient woods www.wildlifebcn.org/westcambshundreds For further info visit www.wildlifebcn.org www.wildlifebcn.org/autumn

Beautiful Berberis

Berberis thunbergii are deciduous shrubs which look particularly fabulous at this time year, producing highly coloured leaves, and often berries which last well into winter. These berries are actually edible and rich in vitamin C, though because they are very acidic, they are not widely consumed by people. They are an important food for many small birds though. They get their other name of 'barberry bush' because of their vicious spines. This makes them useful as an impenetrable barrier hedge and may be another reason why the berries aren’t harvested much! Like the colourful Japanese Maple, they originate from Eastern Asia. Berberis vary in colour according to the cultivar and variety. The common Berberis thunbergii have green leaves in spring and summer which turn rich burgundy in autumn. If you'd like the purple colour all year round choose Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea, which has purple leaves in spring that turn rich mahogany in autumn. Though Berberis are generally grown for their autumn colour, they are a hard-working shrub, and produce a mass of tiny yellow flowers in spring, providing interest at either end of the year.

D&A Sanders

There is a Berberis for most gardens: They can grow to a maximum height and spread of 1.5m, but there are now dwarf forms which grow to just 50cm, try 'Tiny Gold' or 'Lutin Rouge'. They grow best in full sun but also tolerate partial shade. They do well in most soil types, and even do well in drought, but will thrive particularly well in well drained moist soil. Their easy-going nature extends to aftercare, as they are generally pest-free and require

little attention, other than a trim to tidy them up periodically. If you don't have much space or mainly grow in containers on a balcony 'Lutin Rouge' does very well in a pot. Mid-September to October, and midMarch to April are the best times to plant so now is the perfect time. Dig a hole double the width of the root ball. Sprinkle in a handful of blood, fish and bone and work into the ground. Place the plant into the hole, fill in with soil around the root ball and firm the soil down gently but firmly, finish by watering well. They will appreciate being mulched with well-rotted organic matter in late spring, but they aren't fussy; grass cuttings will do fine. My absolute favourite is Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Admiration'. This lovely plant has extremely attractive orange-red foliage, edged with yellow, and forms an attractive mound shape. Its masses of small yellow flowers in the spring followed by purple-crimson berries in autumn make it the most perfect Berberis in my opinion.

Stop the spam and put an end to unwanted text messages You may have received a text message that you weren’t quite sure about? Maybe it asked you to reveal personal information in order to unblock an account? While in most cases, a text message from an unknown number or source is a scam; their content or call for action can also cause upset for many people who are unaware how - or if - to respond. However, there is now a new service which allows you to report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider. All operators now use 7726 as the short code to report spam texts, and it is free to use. All of the UK’s mobile operators worked together to deploy a tool which collates all the information from the 7726 short code in real time. This means they can take early action to block numbers that are generating spam on their networks. They can also use this information to inform the regulators. You can report spam texts directly to your mobile phone provider free of charge by forwarding the text message to 7726. But what does a messaging scam look like? While scammers are getting more cunning at making a scam message look like the real thing, there are some signs you can watch out for. Here are some great tips from Which? Unexpected contact Think about how that organisation normally contacts you and if it isn’t via a message, contact them directly to check it’s legitimate. A genuine organisation will never contact you out of the blue and ask you to verify your details, request personal or banking details or tell you to transfer money via a message. If in doubt, contact the organisation using a number you’ve found independently of the message. Check for spelling or grammar errors Genuine organisations will rarely, if ever, make glaring spelling mistakes or grammatical errors, and if so, it will usually be an isolated incident. If the message doesn’t look professional, it’s probably a scam - even if it drops into a message chain from your bank. Don’t follow any links If you follow a link in the message, it could send you to an imposter website set up to steal your money or personal data. In some cases it could even infect your smartphone with malware. Always look up an organisation’s contact details independently and get in touch to verify the message. Don’t share any personal information If you think you’ve been targeted by a scam message, don’t share any personal information, your banking details or PIN. Legitimate organisations, such as banks or HMRC, will never ask for your personal or banking details through a message or text.
