FAMILY FRIENDLY TECH

Appy Families

In this digital age, it is becoming increasingly apparent that technology is developing faster than our children are outgrowing their school uniforms. While there is always a need to be aware of the online tools and apps children are interacting with, there is a fantastic array of different apps and platforms which can make life that little bit easier.

Rewarding kids' help with the chores

If you have young children you know how much of a challenge it can be to keep everyone pulling their weight when it comes to the chores. Of course nobody expects a toddler to be making dinner, however that doesn’t mean that age-appropriate chores cannot be encouraged. What better way to do so than with an app like Our Home which is designed to reward children in a way that keeps them engaged and encouraged to help out.

Identifying plants and wildlife

There are dozens of different apps to choose from, whether your child is a budding gardener, loves to watch the birds or would just like to use digital tools to expand their knowledge. With a selection of free and paid apps to suit your family's specific interest, this is a fantastic way to utilise technology to engage children with the natural world around them. They are simple to use and often only require a simple photograph to be taken which gives bonus points for developing fine motor skills.

Control of settings and privacy

The Google Family app allows parents to take control of their child’s settings and privacy and is a popular way to keep an eye on their online activities including screen time, setting downtime and to approve or block apps. It gives you the power to delete an app if necessary, remind them of their password or change their privacy settings. An additional setting gives you the ability to check your child’s location too.

Providing positive stimulation and fun

If you are planning a road trip with the kids, you will know that there will be the inevitable, ‘Are we there yet?’ and ‘I’m bored’ piping up from the back seat. Consider allowing a small amount of screen time to help offset the initial boredom, especially as you travel through familiar surroundings in the early part of the journey.

Why not try the Mr Shingu's Paper Zoo app where children digitally create paper animals by completing origami within the app? Once the app is bought, purchases are made – thankfully, not with real money – but through the child’s hard work as they 'earn' when they complete tasks. Perhaps one for older children, this app provides peace of mind for parents worried about in-app purchases and provides positive stimulation.

Helping bedtime to become trouble free

Who doesn’t wish that bedtimes were easier? The Moshi Twilight app is a family favourite for countless parents and carers keen to make the bedtime routine trouble free. With bedtime stories, sleep sounds and no potentially over stimulating videos, it is audio-focused and is available with a free trial.

CSI EXPERIENCE

Competition winners from a Peterborough primary school turned detective in a fantastic Term Times competition with Pulse CSI.

The Year 6 class from Longthorpe Primary School in Peterborough were excited to take part in a day long forensic science workshop, full of education and fun, when they won our competition. It gave them a unique opportunity to see what it’s like to be a forensic Crime Scene Investigator.

It was organised by Pulse CSI who provide workshops nationwide for Primary, Secondary, Independent and Special Educational Needs Schools and PRUs. The students were split into teams and learnt techniques used in a forensic science investigation.

During the session they gathered trace evidence, looking at hair and fibres under a microscope, had the chance to use ultraviolet light and discovered how to uncover footwear evidence. The young detectives then had to use the skills and knowledge they had acquired to uncover a suspect in a mock crime scene investigation.

The young investigators thoroughly enjoyed their experience day.

Thrilling Treetops Adventure takes Centre Stage at Queensgate this Easter

The Easter break is upon us once again but don’t panic. If you’re looking for something to keep the kids occupied over the holidays a tree top adventure awaits in Peterborough!

It’s 2024 and hopping was soooo last year, this Easter it’s all about climbing and adventuring at Queensgate as the Peterborough shopping and leisure destination brings a sensational Treetop Adventure Park and Playground to the city centre. The 18 metre-long ropes course experience plus mini playground, opens on Saturday 23 March and remains in the centre until Sunday 21 April – that’s plenty of days full of fun for the little ones to have memorable adventures and should mean happy parents and carers galore. Plus, Queensgate’s team have made it available for private hire on selected days – literally the coolest birthday party ever!

Katie Chapman, the Marketing and Commercialisation Manager at Queensgate Shopping Centre, said: "We are excited to bring the Treetops Adventure to Queensgate Shopping Centre. It's an incredible opportunity for families to embark on a unique and memorable adventure right in the heart of Queensgate. We believe this attraction will add an extra layer of excitement to the Queensgate experience and create lasting memories for our visitors."

Located in the heart of North Square in Queensgate, this exciting family-friendly attraction features two distinct areas tailored to cater to the varying ages of adventurous visitors: the "Little Explorers" playground is for children up to 4 years old and the "Jungle Adventure" ropes course is designed for youngsters aged 5-14 years.

In the playground there’s the super swampy ball pit and the big boulder climbing wall to conquer and the ropes course is a clip-on adventure across several death-defying

obstacles suspended off the ground. Each session is 30 minutes long and spaces are limited to ensure maximum enjoyment – and parents, it’s not a crèche, so just relax in the nearby seating and watch your little Tarzan or Jane swing to their heart’s content.

The Treetops Adventure is not only a fantastic way for children to burn off some energy (and some of those choccie Easter eggs!) with some active play, it’s also an opportunity for families to bond in a fun and thrilling environment during the holidays.

TICKET PRICING - Little Explorers Adventure Playground: (Up to 4 years): £1 for 30 minutes (Height & weight restrictions apply - Treetops minimum height 1.10m and weigh less than 100kg). Treetops Adventure Ropes Course (5-14 years): £2 for 30 minutes

Buying a new home with your partner is exciting, but thinking about how things might be divided should you separate or pass away might not be at the forefront of your mind. Simon Pierson, Associate at Hegarty explains why thinking about how you wish to own your home before you buy can make things easier in the future.

Buying a home

You can own a property either as joint tenants or as tenants in common. When a property is owned as joint tenants each owner has an equal right to the whole of the property. Should one of the owners die their interest automatically transfers to the other owner(s) under the right of survivorship; you cannot leave your share of the property to someone else.

If a property is held as tenants in common, each owner has their own share. They may hold the property 50:50 or perhaps 60:40 or 70:30. If one owner dies, their share does not automatically transfer to the surviving co-owner(s) but instead will pass in accordance with the deceased’s Will or under Intestacy Rules where no Will exists.

Which option is right for me?

Which option you go for will depend on your own set of circumstances.

If each person is contributing different amounts, it may make sense to own the property in shares reflecting those sums, or a declaration of trust could set out each person’s interest.

For example: John and Steve are buying a house together and John is putting in £10,000, and Steve is contributing £50,000. A declaration of trust might confirm that if the property is sold, after costs and fees are paid, the first £60,000 will be divided, £10,000 to John and £50,000 to Steve, with the balance of the proceeds being

split 50:50. They would hold the property as tenants in common and both receive the sum they invested and then benefit equally from any profit.

Couples who have children from previous relationships may want to protect their financial interest for their children. Many couples choose to own the property as tenants in common so that their share of the property can be left to their children.

Depending on your situation, it may be sensible to have either a declaration of trust or co-habitation agreement drawn up, declaring who owns the property in what shares. Hegarty’s wills, trusts and probate and family departments can help advise you further.

Air fryers are the new buzzword in home cooking, but as well as reportedly saving you money, they could also save your nerves when it comes to family breakfast times.

WIN!

Sam Milner, author of The Complete Air Fryer Cookbook

Easy air fryer breakfasts

Author Sam Milner has been air frying and sharing recipes since 2012 and in the sizzling Sunday Times Bestseller, The Complete Air Fryer Cookbook, which Sam has co-authored, she shares her secrets from dippy eggs to scones, pizza to moist chocolate cake!

Sam is now sharing her tips for a stress free breakfast with Term Times readers and we also have three of the books to give away. It’s the ultimate beginner’s guide to air frying.

It can be a real struggle in the morning before the school run when you have to encourage the kids out of bed, get them dressed and ready and make their breakfast before you have to rush off. Add fussy eaters into the mix and it can all become very stressful.

Sam has some time-saving and hassle-free air fryer breakfasts using eggs that are ideal for those crazy mornings. She also suggests eggs because the protein leaves the youngsters full for longer and sets them up nicely for their busy day at school.

Soft boiled eggs and soldiers 'What we love about these is that we can leave the air fryer cooking the eggs (they take 10 minutes) and use this time to get dressed. Then to keep it healthy, instead of toast soldiers our kids will have them with a mixture of carrot and cucumber sticks'.

Scrambled eggs 'This is our son Jorge’s favourite. He loves scrambled eggs for breakfast and if you have kids with different favourites, you can use little ramekins and do a portion in each. For example, you could do scrambled eggs in one and a fried egg in the other.'

Egg cups 'These are like little omelettes. You air fry them in a little silicone muffin case and like an omelette you can mix and match flavours. For breakfast, we like them most with a mixture of mushrooms, spinach and peppers, but if you have fussy kids, you can mix and match. What is brilliant about these is that they can be made ahead, so you are not rushing around, plus they double up as a snack for packed lunches.'

THREE BOOKS UP FOR GRABS

This Sunday Times Best Seller is your comprehensive go-to resource, with something for every day, every meal and every taste.

TO ENTER our competition to win a copy of The Complete Air Fryer Cookbook (White Lion Publishing) worth £20, just head to page 3. Closing date for entries is 5 April.

NEWS

Exceptional results at St Augustine’s

A school in Stamford has achieved top marks after an impressive turnaround.

St. Augustine's in Stamford is now riding high becoming one of the highest performing schools in Stamford for progress data in all three core subjects, and in the top 20% of schools nationally, for their exceptional progress in writing, according to gov.uk ‘Get Information About Schools’. The data set for the 2023 SATS shows the school’s outstanding progress from the last figures pre Covid which saw the school ranked as one of the lowest performing in Stamford.

Headteacher Tina Cox says the turnaround has been a whole school effort during a period of rapid growth and development since she was appointed in 2021. As head of Curriculum and Year 6, Mrs Oliver has led a team of hardworking teaching staff to rewrite the school's curriculum. Together with skilled teaching assistant, Mrs Jones, they also individually assessed the needs of each child and worked closely with them to make great progress in all three subjects.

Mrs Cox says: 'I am immensely proud of what we have all achieved as a school family. We are a member of the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi Academy Trust, who have supported recruitment and retention of an excellent team by investing in wellbeing and ongoing CPD, whilst we work hard in school to create a happy, friendly and nurturing environment in which each and every one of our pupils can flourish!'

Term Times is always keen to hear about news and achievements at local schools so if you have something to share, just get in touch.

The Little Mermaid Jr makes waves in Stamford

Young mermaid Ariel is keen to find out about life on land and makes a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula, risking all when she falls for a dashing prince. This show follows a very successful summer production of High School Musical Jr and features their younger cast members aged 8 to 18 years.
