Alison McGuinness, President

Pauline Brown

We have just had our second meeting in the village hall, so all is going well. Our guest speaker was Alicia, and she gave us an enthusiastic demonstration using a Thermomix; a kitchen gadget that a few of our members already use and some of us had never heard of. A powerhouse appliance that can do almost anything: sauté, roast, puree, mix and chop, amongst many other things. It has attachments to mix meringue, cream etc, and to steam fish and vegetables. It is not cheap, but Alicia assured us it can replace kitchen items such as a bread maker, blender, juicer, mixer, food processor and even your cooker hob. When connected to the internet it gives

you access to over 7000 recipes, and as demonstrated, the machine itself guides you through the recipes, so for the tomato soup, it was showing on the screen what needed to be done at each stage of the process. For instance, it would show what needs to be weighed and added to the pot. Alicia gave us a really knowledgeable demonstration and made us some lovely tomato soup, which was delicious! Remember, we meet on the first Thursday of the month and would warmly welcome anyone wishing to come along and see what we get up to.

inspire St Peter's Church We are moving into October and in theory the colder months of the year in this country. In August this year we seemed to be in Autumn already and I was getting very close to putting my heating on and then September arrives, and we have a few tropical days! Things seem very strange in so many different ways. In September we have held a service for creation Sunday – thinking about the world which God created and how we can play our part in caring for the world at this time. Later this year, there are big conversations coming up about climate change and what can we do to reverse the damage already done. We are praying as we move towards COP26, the UN Climate Change Conference, that we will be able to take steps to heal the planet which is suffering in so many different ways. As we move into a new season and see changes around us in the weather, temperature and in nature, and as the clocks change at the end of the month, we are expecting some changes too at St Peter’s and are looking forward to what lies ahead for us. Many of you may know that we have been having some building work done since just after Easter of this year. Our new facilities

which include a new room upstairs, new toilets and a new kitchen area should be completed this month and The Bishop of Ely is coming to dedicate our new facilities and we will have a Confirmation Service for those who want to make their own declaration of faith. Please do come and join us for this service with Bishop Stephen on Sunday 24th October in the morning – you will need to check social media or contact me for the time as we are currently looking at our service pattern, but you are very welcome to join us on this Sunday or any Sunday. We would love to see you. We hope that from November we will be able to welcome back other groups and our children and youth ministry groups as well. We have missed you. I love the autumn as the leaves change colour and fall, I hope that you are able to get out and about and see the beauty of the world around us.

With every blessing for this season. Rev Sarah – 01733 248690/07498 230858

Yaxley Methodist Chapel By the time this October issue of the Gazette arrives on your doormat the Harvest will be safely gathered in! We held our Harvest Festival on the 26 September and the non-perishable food displayed in the the Chapel during the Service was donated to St.Peter's food bank. The amount of produce donated exceeded our expectations. Thank you to all involved. My apple tree is 40 years old and as usual there was an abundance of fruit on the tree and under it each morning too. There is only a limited amount of fresh or cooked I can give away to friends or neighbours or fit into my small freezer. The insects and birds enjoy some and this Year I have been blessed with three hedgehogs who have been enjoying the fallen apples, water, fresh tomatoes and dog biscuits (donated by Poppy, my Daughter's generous Dog). Why are we so fascinated with these beautiful creatures ? Maybe because they are so cute when they look up at you, so trusting! I lost many seedlings and plants during the Spring (despite having nine frogs in the pond obviously neglecting their duties). But the hedgehogs are gardener's friends and have kept my plants nibble free. It isn't only Hedghogs that are cute. So many cute babies and their parents have

been having fun in the Chapel on Friday mornings. Our Busy Bees Club for under 1s has been so successful. To find out more about this follow the link on our Facebook page. Our Sunday Services have resumed starting at 10.30. All ages are welcome to join us. The Yaxley Singers, Busy Bees and Sunday Services have meant our lovely cosy Chapel is back in business after such a long closure. I am only sorry that we aren't able to start our popular Coffee Mornings yet. But we have had plenty of practice in making special cakes over the past 18 months ready to delight you when we can do so. If you are unable to join us physically Peterborough Methodist Circuit online Worship continues each Sunday at 10.30 and weekday morning prayers at 8.30. You can also watch them later on Youtube. Our new Minister, Rev'd Vivienne and her Husband Luke also have a really good time Podcast on YouTube once a week. God Bless You, stay safe and keep a look out for those hedgehogs before they hibernate.

TALK Let’s talk about it More of us are open to the idea of seeking counselling to help us cope when life becomes complicated. We go to the gym to feel good physically and we have massages to feel good holistically, so counselling can be thought of as a sort of ‘mind massage’, giving you the opportunity to let your words and emotions out without being judged. The number of people accessing mental health services has risen steadily in recent years, yet not everyone will use NHS services. You might decide to go private for a number of reasons – there may be a waiting list or a lack of availability in your area, for example. “I started off by having counselling under the NHS, but this meant I couldn’t choose my counsellor. I didn’t really get on with her, and I wasn’t able to select what type of counselling therapy she followed,” said Samantha. “I decided that it was better to go down the private route.”

Taking control of your life Counselling can help you when you’re struggling to cope, whether it’s for depression, stress and anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, drug or alcohol misuse, bereavement, sexuality issues, or post-traumatic disorder, and there are many different types of counselling therapies. There’s no shame in seeking further help; instead of seeing it as a weakness, it can be the first step towards taking control of your life and finding new

Building Work Update We hope at the time of printing our new part of the building will be open which extends the facility of extra consulting rooms, a new minor operations room and administration rooms, in addition to the consulting rooms that have already been renovated. We are very pleased with our new look and we thank you for your patience during this time. More updates to follow on phase three which will include renovation to the front of the building.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast cancer it’s a scary thought and all too many women assume that it won’t happen to them. Fact is though, every ten minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK. So, stay aware during breast cancer awareness month 2021 and go for a medical checkup, it might save your life.

strength, especially if you feel you have nobody close to confide in.

improved before going to a new one. Regular sessions are also a good idea so that you can start to see a difference.

A counsellor won’t tell you what choices to make or offer you specific advice, but they will guide you and help you understand why you may be feeling a certain way. Your first visit will give you and your therapist the opportunity to decide if you feel comfortable with each other and to talk about what you want to achieve from the sessions. Some sessions can even take place online, for example using Skype for video calls.

Payments and accreditation

What makes a good counsellor?

Ensure that any health professional you go with is registered and approved.

A good counsellor should not judge or criticise you, but instead will focus on what you are saying to help you deal with your problems. If you feel that things aren’t going the way you want them to, then you should discuss this with your counsellor to see if anything can be

Early signs of breast cancer can be a lump in a breast, a painful breast or armpit, or a discharge from the nipple. Even if none of these symptoms present themselves, a doctor should be visited to be sure. A doctor will most likely perform a manual exam and send you for a mammogram. A mammogram examination is painless and only takes about ten minutes. For more information, visit https://breastcancernow.org/get-involved/campaign-us

October is Lupus Awareness Month The aim of the month is to raise awareness of the condition, the varying symptoms that people with lupus can exhibit and its impact on the lives of the many people who live with it. Lupus is an immune system illness that mainly affects females and can affect any part of the body. Due to the variety of symptoms that lupus can

All counsellors are required to have supervision and counselling themselves as part of their training.

Fees can differ depending on the experience of the counsellor and the number of sessions you commit to.

If you can’t afford private therapy, then it’s important not to try and deal with things on your own. Your GP can talk to you about other options available, as well as letting you know about free talking therapies from charities or voluntary organisations.

produce, it often goes undiagnosed for long periods and during this time can cause damage to a number of different organs such as the skin, lungs, heart and brain. Lupus is believed to be genetic in origin, and there is no known cure. For more information, please visit www.lupusuk.org.uk/lupus-awareness-month/

Flu Vaccinations We will be in contact with details of new flu clinics following September postponement due to unforeseen road freight challenges. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by a nationwide issue beyond our control.

Monthly Closure Dates The Practice will be closed on Wednesday 20 October between 12.30pm and 4.00pm for staff training. Emergency Telephone 01733 240478.

Life as a Stonemason Local amateur photographer, Robyn Oliver, publishes her debut photography zine of the series titled ‘Fenland’.

Photographed throughout 2020, the series shot exclusively on 35mm film, follows creator Robyn’s father capturing his work and life as a stonemason. After finishing school and starting his apprenticeship at 16, Mark (Robyn’s father) has been a stonemason his whole life. Starting up his own business in Yaxley over 30 years ago, Fenland Stoneworks is still based in the village today. Offering a range of services from granite and quartz kitchen worktops to hand cut lead lettered headstones. Such high skilled, sometimes labour-intensive craftsmanship passed down through millennia means the stonemasonry trade requires love and patience.

Woodwalton Fen - Mark Hamblin

Wild Walk '

The Wildlife Trusts

The gorgeous colours of autumn bring a vibrant glow to the horizon and it's one of the best times to lace up hiking boots and stride out to appreciate all the visual treats to savour. With 14 square miles of wildness, the Great Fen holds a variety of trails to explore. On an easy and short stroll, Water Birds Trail leads into the heart of the Woodwalton Fen, taking in two bird hides which both looking out over meres, and both of which are home to mallard, tufted duck, wigeon and pochard – even a bittern or water vole also on a lucky day. In the northern section of Woodwalton Fen, taking in the Rothschild bungalow and on to the tower hide at Rymes Reedbed is the Marsh Harrier Trail. Built on stilts by Charles Rothschild in 1911, the old thatched bungalow has remained largely unchanged, although the roof was re-thatched for the first time in 2011. On the right-hand stilts marks indicate the level of the peat at various points in time; on a second

stilt water levels have been marked showing the years when the reserve has had severe flooding. The north hide is the best vantage point on the reserve to look for the marsh harrier where they nest in summer and use the reedbed to roost in autumn and winter. In the spring the pairs put on displays of amazing aerial acrobatics, passing food prey from the male to female when rearing their young. In autumn and winter there's a chance of spotting bearded tits or bittern flying into the cover of the reedbed. At 6.5km the longer Last of the Meres trail is a circular walk connecting the northern parts of the Great Fen, extending from newly restored areas at New Decoy Farm to the historic site of Engine Farm, through to the woodland

king for Autumn of Holme Fen and back via the old Holme to Ramsey railway line. The route also crosses the former site of Whittlesey Mere, the largest lowland lake south of the Lake District before it was drained in 1851. Longer still is the Ouse Valley Way - a 26 mile section runs through Huntingdonshire, winding from St Neots to Earith, with a wide range of

habitats and wildlife alongside the winding river route: in places raised banks are designed to contain the water within the meadows, attracting large numbers of wildfowl - mute swans, greylag and Canada geese, along with grey herons and short-eared owls. And in other stretches gravel extraction has created a network of flooded pits and wetland habitats, including those at Godmanchester nature reserve.

JOIN THE HALF TERM BIG WILD WALK Walk for wildlife, support and help tackle climate crisis with The Wildlife Trusts’ Big Wild Walk over half term, 25-31 October. The Trusts are asking nature-lovers to fundraise to help raise vital money for their 30 by 30 mission (to restore at least 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030). As a target there are three choices to take on as a challenge: walk 30km over Big Wild Walk week; walk 30km in three days; walk 30km in one day. Alternatively adapt and tailor a bespoke challenge - invite family to join in, set up a remote relay with friends or take the challenge individually.

Indoors or outdoors, front room, park or wood, treadmill or track – anything works. Last year young brothers Conor and Daniel Stoker raised more than £200 for the Trust walking 3km daily. Their mother Caroline said: “They braved the wind and the rain and also picked up litter on their walks. On the final day, following their father's covid diagnosis they had to complete their challenge doing 250 lengths of the patio, scooting, skipping, running and hopping all afternoon.” Be inspired!

The session runs from 10.00am until 1.30pm and will include some fun musical activities, a chance to look around the Cathedral and time to meet some of the current choristers. YAXLEY LIBRARY Love your library? Share your story with us! 4 - 10 October

One Giant Leap returns for half term Monday 25 to Thursday 28 October, 10.00am, 12.30pm and 3.00pm.

To celebrate Libraries Week from 4 - 10 October, we want to hear about your fond memories of visiting the library as a child, your favourite books, services you find useful, and staff that have helped you. Libraries offer much more than book borrowing, such as storytime, craft events, internet access and information services. Write a small piece about your memory or draw a picture and take into your local library.

The moon artwork, One Small Step by Peter Walker has to leave the Cathedral at the end of October, so to make the most of it whilst it is still here, they are re-running their very popular astronaut-themed activities for children during half term week.

EngAge online

One Giant Leap is a 90-minute session with games and crafts, finishing with the famous teddy bear parachute jump from high up in the Cathedral.

These digital sessions temporarily replace EngAge events in libraries. If you are interested in joining these sessions or would like more information, please email: Engage.online@cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Read a Little Aloud Online! Join in and listen to our volunteers reading a variety of poems, stories and literature from the comfort of your own home. To find out more, please contact the Read a Little Aloud team at: RALA.Online@cambridgeshire.gov.uk News on our website at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/library, Cambridgeshire Libraries Facebook page, or search for us on Twitter or Instagram

In the summer the sessions were sold out, so it’s a good idea to prebook! Tickets are £6 per child, including a teddy bear to take home. It is free for accompanying adults but they are asked to book in to ensure numbers are managed. To book visit www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk

Yaxley Countryside Volunteers at work The Yaxley Countryside Volunteers have been in existence for well over thirty years, work in partnership with Yaxley Parish Council and aim to make Yaxley a better place This year we have, like many other groups been restricted in our activities by Covid. However there have been some successes. Last autumn we planted on behalf of the parish council some 1,600 bulbs at the top of the REC between the Poplar trees to provide some colour in spring and summer. Work has also taken place behind the pavilion

where we planted a small area with a wild flower mix. At the bottom of the Rec is the community orchard, which is in its second year and is maturing well. Work is also planned for Willow Pond in the Rec too we hope to scrape out the bottom of the pond and remove some growth that currently exists.

The volunteers have been busy during August making hay; they assisted the parish council in cutting the grass in the older churchyard the hay was donated to the local riding school. We have also carried out work at Pound Lane cleaning up the area around the pond; cutting the grass and giving the benches a timely clean.

Amazing

AUTUMN COLOUR Just as the temperatures are dropping and things start to become dull, gloomy and miserable, your garden can develop a new life, glowing with fantastic foliage colour. If you’re looking to add some glorious golds, passionfilled purples, ravaging reds or some outrageous oranges to your garden, then now is a perfect time to buy those autumn-colour plants.

Vitis coignetiae is a rampant grower with heart-shaped leaves measuring up to 25-30cm across whose splendid scarlet and crimson colours are unmissable. This vine can be grown through large trees and over sturdier supports. The colours tend to be especially good if the soil is poor or the root run is restricted. Parthenocissus quinquefolia – more commonly known as the Virginia creeper – is another sizeable climber that also offers a good degree of self-clinging ability, so it can be used to clothe walls where you have not

fixed up a support system. In autumn the leaves are numerous shades of scarlet, orange and red. It can grow taller than you want, so will ultimately need trimming if you grow it on a house wall, as otherwise it will move on to the roof. Parthenocissus henryana is a relative of the Virginia creeper, but much more restrained. For much of the year its divided leaves are a dark green to bronzy colour with pretty silvery white veining. In autumn they turn rich shades of red. If you are after a shrub or two then there is an even wider range to choose from. Fothergilla major or witch alder is a gorgeous smallish to medium-sized shrub that is covered with scented creamy-white spiky flower clusters early in the year, before the leaves appear. Pale green for much of the year, the foliage turns shades of yellow and orange in the autumn.

Gardeners

Amelanchier lamarckii, also known as the snowy mespilus or serviceberry, is a large shrub or small tree and produces lovely whitish blossom in spring. At this time the new leaves are a coppery colour, changing to bright green and then one huge mass of fiery colours in the autumn.

Acers or maples are generally reliable autumn showstoppers and for smaller gardens you’ll find it hard to beat one of the Japanese maples, with their stunning divided leaves turning rich purples, reds, oranges and yellows, depending on exactly which one you have planted. These also do well in large tubs, perfect for a sheltered back yard. Cotinus or smoke bush is a shrub with attractively rounded leaves that come in shades of green, pinkish-orange or purple. Come the autumn they produce a bright display to be proud of. The fluffy seed heads that are left after flowering look just like little clouds or plumes of smoke – perfect with the bonfire effect of the leaves. For inspiration, visit an open garden, arboretum or park, and note down the names of what you like best, keeping in mind that your own space is likely to be considerably smaller.

can you help vulnerable customers?

Autumn – as the leaves begin to change colour and we feel a nip in the air, let’s remember that there are still many jobs still to be done in the garden. From tidying perennials, laying new lawns and planting shrubs to planting spring flowering bulbs and composting fallen leaves; these are all tasks which will no doubt be on the gardening agenda. However, if you are physically unable or not confident enough to carry out the jobs yourself, this is where our Safe Local Trades tried and tested members – our green fingered gurus – bring their expertise to their many customers. As well as our work with the trades, much effort is placed on safeguarding the more vulnerable people in our communities by working personally and directly with other caring and concerned parties in the 'local' community such as Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Age UK, The Bobby Scheme, Disability Peterborough, Care Network, CAPASP (Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Against Scams Partnership) and many more. Amid fears that vulnerable residents could fall foul of green-fingered scammers, our partners rely on Peterborough-based Safe Local Trades for recommendations they can pass to their clients. Trusting our register since 2008, Safe Local Trades is the only

local register where all members are stringently vetted, criminal record checked and monitored. We know that our older customers WANT to do the gardening themselves but for whatever reason are unable to. We and our members understand that these customers treasure their gardens and want the same care and attention given to their plants and green spaces as they would give themselves. Our members can deliver a professional service while understanding the client’s needs and concerns, giving care and attention to pruning plants and shrubs. We are desperately frustrated and saddened that we don’t have enough gardeners to cope with the garden maintenance requests - we want to do everything that we can to help our partners and customers. Year on year, we continue to see the demand for this service increase. It is a sad fact that there are still many rogue traders operating in and around the county, who simply knock on doors touting for work – with tree cutting among the most popular jobs offered – and we want this to stop. Meeting demand is the issue we currently face, so you offer garden maintenance services and would

like to consider joining Safe Local Trades alongside our existing members, we would love to hear from you – please visit www. safelocaltrades.com/become-a-member Or, perhaps you have a passion for plants and love gardening; have a sound horticultural knowledge and are thinking of setting up your own business, just like member Helen Yeeles (testimonial at www.safelocaltrades.com/traders/ testimonials) who quickly filled up her order books after starting her own business.

YOUR GUIDE TO

Perhaps, more than ever at the moment, there is an increased awareness of our home surroundings, which has led to a rising demand for dining tables, chairs and benches. And for home offices, antique lamps and lighting, bookcases and tables for laptops and computers are required. Even books for the shelves – Zoom backdrops maybe? This, coupled with antiques being the ultimate in recycling, is creating a marked increase in prices of what some would call ‘traditional furniture’. In general, vintage and antiques are trending toward small, functional, and nostalgic. Small because millennials (born 1981-96) prefer smaller spaces and are often on the move. Functional because owning something that is solely decorative doesn’t work with ‘small’ and ‘on the move’.

YOUR GUIDE TO

CHIMNEY SAFETY

Time for a clean sweep As we prepare for the cold weather and dark nights of the winter months, it is important to ensure the appliances we use to keep us warm and cosy are safe and economical.

Having your chimney properly swept not only makes sure it is clean of soot, it also gives you peace of mind that there is no debris left over from nesting birds etc., which would prevent your chimney from drawing properly, and can cause smoke and fumes to return into the room. Wood burning stoves are a very popular addition to homes, they offer warmth and are aesthetically pleasing, giving a cosy and welcoming feel to any room. However, it is essential that your new stove is fitted correctly, by a competent fitter. Ensure your installer is registered with a ‘competent person’ organisation, such as HETAS, to be certain that they have been properly trained to install your appliance safely and in line with regulations.

Now you have your nice new stove, it is important to burn the correct fuel, in the correct way. Look out for kiln dried, or barn stored logs, with a moisture content of between 10 and 20%. Burning wood with a higher moisture content burns at a low temperature which creates more smoke, subsequently causes unnecessary air pollution and can cause tar and creosote to build up in your flue which is the main cause of chimney fires. Burning wood with the correct moisture content burns at the optimum temperature; between 300 and 500 degrees which is also more efficient, so it saves you money too. If you want to find out more about the do’s and don’ts, go to burnright. co.uk or ask Graham Flood The Chimney Sweep who is always happy to offer advice.

Please see Graham Flood's advert on page 2.

And finally, nostalgic because at some point most of us enter a stage where we find comfort in memories from our childhood, whether it’s a toy, something mum used in the kitchen, or some other item that we remember with fondness.

Mid-Century Modern The mid-century modern boom is set to continue for a while. Almost anything related to this period is now of interest to collectors and dealers. There are no signs of this slowing any time soon.

World

gazetteguide As a culture, we are fascinated by objects that belong to a bygone era. Classic cars, first edition books, Old Master paintings and stately homes passed down through the generations are all considered to be significant, beautiful and valuable.

Memorabilia

Travel posters from the 1960s and 70s and all things ‘space’ related (especially anything to do with Star Wars and the early Star Trek series) continue to be popular. Demand for pop memorabilia and pop-culture items from the 60s, 70s and 80's have also moved upward, with old cameras and vinyl records, games and film posters continuing to gain traction.

Toys Always a favourite, no matter what age you are! More young collectors have started buying their own childhood toys from the latter half of the twentieth century. Items from the 1960s all the way up to the 1990s are particularly desired.

Vintage Christmas The vintage/antique trend for decorating with true vintage and antiques at Christmas will continue this year. With vintage Christmas decorations, nostalgia often comes into play because our memories of holidays and the emotions attached to them are often very strong.

Antique Jewellery Aside from the extraordinary beauty and refined elegance of old jewellery, there is something magical about a piece with a past and it is also a very sound investment. Stylish brides-to-be are progressively welcoming the old-world charm and uniqueness of an antique engagement ring. And, as we become more environmentally conscious it makes sense to make more of our money, while saving the planet at the same time! The setting and the quality of pieces are the two most important things to look for. Another major factor in the value of a piece is whether it is antique or vintage.

Victorian Millennials have started snapping up cheaply priced Victorian items with an eye to helping the environment. Furniture and the more quirky decorative pieces are starting to sell quite well. It is probable that the mid-century modern boom will give way to the old brown antique furniture that you can currently pick up for next to nothing! Investing in it now might just be a very shrewd move!

Chinese Antiques Recent sales of bronze figures and porcelain objects from dynasties such as the Ch’ing are setting record prices. Virtually anything that can be shown to have a connection to the mainland's past continues to sell quickly.

Silver and Gold The value of silver is determined by the current market rate, meaning the price often rises and falls. Keep this in mind as you shop—and if you’re lucky, you might be able to use it as a bargaining tool. Know the difference between silver plate and sterling silver. There’s nothing wrong with silver plate—it’s a wonderful way to bring home the elegant look of silver without the high price tag. But what exactly makes sterling more superior? For one, it holds its value, retaining a high resale

price no matter its age, whereas silver plate does not. It also really stands up to the test of time: Sterling can last hundreds of years if properly taken care of. You can easily tell if a piece is sterling with this simple trick. Hold a small magnet up to the design. If the magnet adheres, then the piece is not sterling and is likely plated silver or something else. A magnet will not be attracted to true sterling silver. In the light of world events, a record gold price was reached last year and with continued uncertainty surrounding financial markets, people continue to look to invest in something more secure, and both gold and silver are proving popular choices.

Porcelain and Ceramics To ascertain whether a design is true porcelain, take out your phone, hold it up to the piece, and see if the light shines through. If it does, then the piece is porcelain. If it doesn’t, the item is likely stoneware or earthenware. Take a close look at the edges of a piece. If the pattern is cut off at the lip of a dish, then it’s likely transferware, which means the design was printed onto the piece and not hand-painted. Designs done by hand will have a fuller, more fluid pattern, complete with brushstroke details and minor imperfections. Symbols on the underside of a piece can help you determine when a piece was made. Hand-painted marks on ceramics suggest an 18th-century origin or earlier, while impressed or printed marks denote a more recent date.

Wood Furniture Pay close attention to the nails: Newer, shinier nails indicate newer construction. The presence of dovetail joints, which hold wood furnishings together without the use of nails or other hardware, is a sign that a piece was made by a cabinetmaker as opposed to being mass-produced or factory-made. Generally, the thinner the dovetail, the more skilled the cabinetmaker (and the higher the quality of the piece). Look at drawer pulls and any other hardware. For pulls, the inside of the drawer should reveal a post-and-nut construction if it’s truly vintage. Look for dirt, dust, and wear around the pulls too; these are signs that the hardware is original to the piece. A refinished piece might look clean and shiny, but updating wood furniture in this way can diminish its value, as collectors often prefer the original, more weathered finish of a piece. That being said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and it’s up to you which look you prefer. You might need to get on your hands and knees to truly assess the state of an item. Flip pieces over, crawl underneath tables, and open drawers to find stamps, labels, signatures, or other markings that might give context to what you’re looking at.

HMRC are sending P800 tax calculations to taxpayers that do not follow the legal requirement to apply allowances to the taxpayer's advantage. When questioned on this point by software developers HMRC said that they were using different methods to calculate P800s and liabilities under self assessment - one operated by the PAYE team and one by the self assessment team based on its specification documentation. by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants The HMRC PAYE team responsible for the P800 process is aware that the allocation of reliefs and allowances is not always in the taxpayer's best interests as set out in legislation but is not able to update the logic. HMRC have confirmed: 'If a P800 calculation is inadvertently issued without correctly allocated allowances or reliefs we will act quickly to correct the issue as soon as it is brought to our attention. We are actively exploring opportunities to deliver a technical solution to prevent this risk.' The discrepancies were uncovered by Tim Good (Absolute Software director and tax lecturer) after taxpayers asked him to review their P800 calculations. He traced the issue back to HMRC's default sequence for applying the personal allowance. Legislation has always required personal allowances and relief to be allocated in the most favourable way to the taxpayer and 'until we discovered it, HMRC's calculator allocated them using the same hierarchy as the allocation to the rate band: non-savings income; savings income; and dividends'.

villagefarm Many years ago, my grandfather used to tell the village school mistress when the crops were ripening and therefore when the children would be needed to help bring in the harvest. Thus the school holidays were set. And when we say ‘holidays’, I’m not sure it had the same meaning back then as today; there would have been little rest when the harvest needed to be brought in!

Walk the Farming Year Athough we’re in 2021, the year for those at school reflects the farming year, and for many reading this, ‘New Year’ is months away, for farmers, teachers and school children, we’re already a month in. The latest venture on our farm is ‘Walk the Farming Year’, where we’ve invited people to join us for a walk and discussion every 6 weeks (approximately) throughout the farming year. On Saturday 11 September we met beneath the boughs of the horse chestnut for a cup of tea, and each member of our dozen-strong gang introduced themselves and their interest in walking through the farming year. Some were interested in climate and the environment and others in the financial and technological elements of farming; some had an interest in livestock and meadows and others in the arable side and plant biology. All were fascinated by the natural world and the way we produce the food we eat impacts on the countryside

around us. We set off and walked and talked, and it was fascinating and fun. It’s not too late to join us. We’re limiting spaces to 20; a small group, but we have a few tickets left and you can get yours on the Eventbrite website by searching ‘Walk the Farming Year’ and you’ll see a reduced ticket for those wishing to join the seven walks still to come. We’ll meet through cold weather and warm, sunshine and rain, and we’ll see seasons change and the farm and her wildlife adapt. The next walk is on Saturday 23 October, well in to the month of wild mushrooms, apples, medlar and quince, and the month when you’ll also find partridge, duck, and wood pigeon at the butchers, and beetroot, squash, leeks, and parsnips wherever you get your veggies. If you buy locally produced food in season, you’re helping to support our amazing countryside. Thank you!

Go, sit upon the lofty hill, And turn your eyes around, Where waving woods and waters wild Do hymn an autumn sound. The summer sun is faint on them— The summer flowers depart— Sit still— as all transform’d to stone, Except your musing heart. Elizabeth Barrett Browning, The Autumn •

Autumn Pudding

Serves 6

Try this variation on summer pudding by making the most of the early autumn fruits, such as plums, blackberries and delicious English apples. Serve with softly whipped double cream flavoured with a splash of Calvados for a really indulgent dessert.

1 2 3 4 5

Ready in 1 hour (plus overnight chilling) 175g caster sugar 3 small English eating apples, peeled, cored and sliced 4 red plums, halved, stones removed and sliced 100g raspberries 100g strawberries, hulled and sliced 100g blackcurrants or bluebe rries 100g blackberries 10 slices thick-sliced white bre ad Extra fruit, to decorate

Place the sugar and 200ml of cold water in a large pan and heat gently until the sugar has dissolved. Add the sliced apples and simmer for 5-10 minutes until just tender. Add the rest of the fruit and simmer for a further 2-3 minutes. Leave to cool. Remove the crusts from the bread slices. Use a round cookie cutter to stamp out a circle from one slice of bread to fit the base of a 1.2-litre pudding basin. Cut the remaining slices of bread in half. Carefully strain half of the fruit syrup from the cooled fruit into a shallow dish. Lightly dip most of the slices of bread into the syrup and arrange around the side of the pudding basin, overlapping them slightly to completely line the basin. Dip the bread circle into the syrup and press into the bottom of the basin. Spoon the fruit into the lined basin, pressing down gently with the back of a spoon. Use the remaining slices of bread to cover the fruit filling completely and spoon over any remaining syrup. Place a saucer on top of the basin and weigh it down with 2-3 food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. To serve, carefully turn the pudding out onto a plate and decorate with extra sliced fruit.

younggazette Yaxley Infant School Welcoming our children back to play, grow and learn. The YIS Team x Over the summer holiday we have been updating the school furniture. Reception and Year 1 now have lovely new resources for the children to access. Staff have been organising classrooms for our topic of 'Into Storyland.' Our EYFS team have been hard at work creating a warm, nurturing environment to teach our 'Planning in the Moment' curriculum. In phonics, early reading and handwriting, we have opted to use 'Little Wandle' as our approach as it linked closely with the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme we used previously, achieving above national and local averages in phonics scores. Our team have been completing training to roll out this exciting new challenge.

had a successful induction into school. Every year the children surprise us with their resilience during changes in their young lives. A massive 'well done' to all of the new children (and parents) for beginning their school journey in such a positive fashion. We look forward to nurturing our young learners in the years to come. Children also posed for photos that were uploaded to Tapestry, our private online learning journal.

Our Foundation Stage environment has undergone huge change over recent years. The philosophy of 'Planning in the Moment' has allowed children to follow their own interests and take ownership of their learning. We have worked closely with Early Excellence, a national provider of Early Years, and consequently invested heavily in new Children came back into school in learning resources, community play September with smiley faces, a skip in blocks and even gained a lottery grant their step and brand-new uniforms. to improve our outdoor environment. It was lovely to see all our children after having had so much time off Our Foundation stage has a huge indoor school. Foundation Stage children space for children to develop and grow. Holme Village PreSchool The preschool has had a great start to the term, it’s been wonderful to see the children again after the summer break and also to have welcomed some new children. They are settling in very well and enjoying making the most of the last of the summer in our newly updated outdoor play area. This term the children will learn about seasons as we gradually see the changes autumn will bring. They will also be enjoying the usual activities such as story and singing time, messy play, painting, sports and games, construction and building,

Little Acorns Day Nursery & Montessori School At Little Acorns the children have been settling into their new rooms and making new relationships with both children and staff. Pre-school have been exploring the garden and looking at what grows and lives within it. The children have been reading stories and talking about what they think grows and lives in our garden. The Preschool children went on a garden hunt to see what they could find. They thoroughly enjoyed picking the fruit that we have been growing, talking about what they found and using their senses to describe their findings.

During group times, the ‘Little Acorn’ book has been a big hit and we have found the children wanting to look at this for themselves during child led play. The Preschool children are looking forward to going on a bug hunt next. We have very limited spaces available at our main building and are now taking bookings for September 2022.

younggazette Farcet C. of E. Primary School We are all very excited to begin a new school year and the children are already enjoying their learning this term. We have relaunched our Activity Passports and some of our year one children have already made biscuits so can tick off that exciting activity! We had a great end to the last academic year and in July, we celebrated the achievements of our year 6 pupils. We wish them lots of luck for the future and know that they will continue to shine. Throughout July, year 6 were busy with their Young Enterprise project which helped them to learn about profit, loss, budgeting and sales figures. They thought carefully about what they could sell and made over £60 profit. It was

lovely to see how excited the younger children were to buy the ice creams on sale. A great afternoon was had by everyone. We held our annual Sports Day and we were hugely impressed with the children’s efforts, support for each other and sportsmanship. The points were very close but Oak House were the winners of the cup this year. We are looking forward to the rest of the autumn term and all of the exciting learning experiences planned.

Mummas & Bubbas Meetup for New Parents in Yaxley

Headteacher of the Year Awards Finalist!

My name is Lou and I run Mummas & Bubbas Meetup in Yaxley. I cannot believe that on 10 September 2021 my group was 9 years old! I’ve lost count of how many bouncing babies I have met with their lovely Mummas.

Fourfields is very excited to announce that our Headteacher Mrs Blyth is a finalist for The School Bus Superheroes, Headteacher of the Year Awards!

Now that Covid restrictions have eased, the group is back up and fully running, so I’m reaching out for new parents to come along. Being a parent can be scary, lonely, daunting and a struggle at times. By coming along, you will meet people in similar situations, where you can share stories, get tips and maybe make new friends.

Mrs Blyth was nominated by the staff at Fourfields for leading the school and caring for our school community with such passion, compassion and energy over the past year. During this very uncertain time, there has been some extraordinary acts from the Education community, where school staff have gone above and beyond the call of duty. As kindness increasingly prevails in these trying times, this award celebrates these wonderful acts of school staff by sharing the stories with the wider community. This is certainly true among the Fourfields family, where all the staff have worked hard to support each other, the pupils, and the wider community. The school is very fortunate to have such a compassionate and caring leader. Mrs Blyth always recognises and celebrates the hard work in the Fourfields team, so it is wonderful that we are able to show how much she is appreciated and were thrilled to discover she has been chosen as a finalist. There will be an award ceremony and we look forward to the winner being announced!

This group is an opportunity for new parents to get out of the house and meet people. I put on an activity each week; messy play, sensory toys, singing or sometimes we just sit and natter. All are welcome, so I’ll put the kettle on to make you a warm cuppa and look forward to meeting you. Any questions, please message me via the details on the left.

Back to School at William de Yaxley After a busy summer, the new year 3 children have started their new academic year in an enthusiastic way and are ready and willing to learn. The children had a staggered start to enable a smooth transition into their new school. They have enjoyed some fun activities to launch themselves into their learning and many opportunities to make new friends during playtimes and lunchtimes. The children started off with a selfportrait activity and some great drawings were achieved through

the close observations that they made by using mirrors. Here are some of the quotes that the children have said about their first week.  ‘I love it!’  ‘I’m confident and think that I can get everything close to right, if not exactly right!’  ‘I like it because it’s fun and I especially like maths’

 ‘We get to see our friends and learn again!’  ‘We enjoy doing the daily mile’  ‘I enjoy anything we do on the computers’  ‘I love it because we do good art!’  ‘I like it because we learn a lot!’

All you need is a pink-coloured blusher and a shimmering highlighter. Sculpt and enhance your cheekbones by applying your blusher first. The pink shade will add a flush of colour to your skin, making your whole face appear brighter and more youthful. Next, apply a highlighter – powder and cream versions work well – to the top of your cheekbones and blend well. You can also use a little of the product under your eyebrows and a dab on

your Cupid’s bow to make your lips look fuller. FACE-FRAMING LIFT Fill out sparse brows by using both a good-quality eyebrow pencil and eyebrow powder, in a colour that’s one shade lighter than your hair. WIDE EYES Line along your top lashes with a black liquid eyeliner – brown works well with blonde hair and is a softer alternative to black if you’re more mature. Position eyelash curlers at the base of your top lashes and gently squeeze. Set with a few coats of mascara. Line under your bottom lashes and finish with a slick of white eyeliner on the inner rim of your eye.

1. EXFOLIATE To save your skin from becoming dull, lacklustre and dehydrated during the autumn months, up your exfoliation to twice a week. This helps to increase cellular regeneration and removes dead skin cells that can hinder the absorption of any moisturisers or serums. 2. INJECT MORE MOISTURE Having a super-moisturising facial product in your toolkit is really important. Avoid any cosmetics that contain drying alcohol, as this strips your skin of moisture and can cause it to become dry and itchy.

3. CHOOSE NATURAL LIP CARE It can be tempting to reach for a tub of petroleum jelly to protect chapped lips from the chill, however, as a byproduct from the oil industry, it is not compatible with our skin, merely it on wrapping your lips in cling film, preventing it from breathing and potentially making the area even more sore and chapped. Instead, reach for a lip product that contains natural waxes, butters and oils to protect, nourish and repair damaged lips. 4. BEAUTIFUL SKIN FROM WITHIN You can make a big difference to your skin by making some small changes to your diet.

If you’ve never tried a facial oil before, now is the perfect time to invest. With a beautifully light, silky texture and an intense nourishing feel, facial oils are the ideal products to give your skin the edge against the elements.

For example, many of us still don’t drink enough water and this can cause skin to become dry and flaky. Drinking two litres of filtered water per day (8 x 250ml glasses) is an essential way to protect your skin from succumbing to autumn dullness.

If your skin has lost its glow, try a pampering overnight treatment to nourish, plump and boost radiance.

If you aren’t already taking an organic food supplement, now is a great time to begin.

Perfect Pumpkin Lantern By Sarah Davey

1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Choose a decent sized, rounded pumpkin. Fresh unblemished ones are best. Work on newspaper as pumpkin carving is messy! Use a serrated blade to cut a lid. Make sure the hole is big enough so that you can scoop out the flesh inside. Use a large spoon or ice cream scoop to remove the pulp and seeds. Thin the walls a little too by scraping away some of the flesh. This makes carving easier and allows more light through. It's best to draw your design in marker first. Bold shapes are easiest. For a professional finish use a paper template. You can draw your own or download one; tape it to the pumpkin then use a sharp pointed tool, like a knitting needle or nail, to poke holes around the design. when you remove the paper, the design will be left on the pumpkin. A sharp, serrated knife will work best to cut out your design. Start at the centre and work outwards using short saw-like strokes for better control. Rub some petroleum jelly on to the exposed parts of the pumpkin. This stops those areas turning brown. If you're using a real candle, put it in a small glass. Cut holes in the lid to allow heat and smoke to escape. Fairy lights and batteryoperated candles are the safest and best options for lighting.
