Welcome to the June issue of the Yaxley Gazette. There's an air of excitement as venues, attractions and clubs prepare to reopen, and a particularly special 'welcome back' is extended to St B's Hall, Farcet Club and The British Legion, to name but a few. If you have any events coming up please let me know, hopefully we can feature them in the magazine and our Facebook group. So, how many of us are ready for a holiday? Are you bravely planning to try for overseas travel or staying in the UK? I am holidaying in the UK this year. We have some amazing places closer to home and I am going to take the opportunity to explore them, if I can get some accommodation! Don't forget that those wanting a camping, glamping or self-catering holiday in the summer, should probably plan ahead to make sure you don’t miss out later in the year. If funds are tight at the moment too, turn to page 18 to discover how to best enjoy a fun family camping escape! Frost can play havoc with our gardening efforts and the past couple of months have hindered by efforts to put out my hanging baskets. I am hoping that June becomes the perfect month to enjoy these suspended avalanches of colour which are the perfect addition to any outdoor space, big or small. Turn to page 12 for guidance and then head to Tandee Nursery to explore a vast range of plants, and whether you want to coordinate the flowers with other garden features. Please remember to support your local shops and tradespeople and don't forget to tell them that you found them in the Gazette. We all need to keep supporting one another. Whatever awaits you in June (hopefully no rain?) - and the rest of the year – be kind to yourself, do the things that make you happy, and believe that things will get better. Stay safe and well. Until next time,

Hello Ladies! I hope you are keeping well and that by the time you read this the warm weather is with us. We still don't know when we shall be restarting our meetings at the new venue of Queen's Pavilion in Daimler Avenue but we will let you know as soon as we have a date. Keep well and it shouldn't be too long before we are able to meet.

Why do we say that saying? Flavour of the month Arriving from the USA in the 1940s, it was used as an advertising slogan to persuade shoppers to try a new flavour of ice cream each month instead of their usual choice. Pass the buck Originating in American poker games, where the ‘buck’ is a token passed to the winner of the jackpot as a reminder that when he deals next, he must start a new jackpot. The token was originally a buckhorn knife, i.e. a knife with a handle made from the horn of a buck deer By a long chalk This comes from the world of sports and dates from the time before lead pencils were in use for making merit marks or scores. Possibly relating to the long jump, where a chalk mark indicated the distance, the longest chalk mark was thus the winner. To chance one's arm (to take a risk) This phrase originated in the military. It referred to anyone who was willing to break the rules and therefore run the risk of losing a badge from their arm, e.g. a sergeant's stripes.

yaxleyhub While last year’s Father’s Day celebrations were limited due to social distancing measures, the vaccine rollout across the country means that Father’s Day 2021 has a good chance of being closer to normal. Of course, it’s easier to be safe and plan outdoor Father’s Day activities that dad will love in the summer!

Yaxley Scout and Guide HQ committee

Father's Day While your dad probably enjoys being showered with gifts and love on this special day, the average dad had rather a different view back when the day was first created, over 100 years ago. In fact, the history of Father’s Day is not a straight line from idea to acceptance. So what is Father’s Day, and how did it originate? The first unofficial Father’s Day was held in Fairmont, West Virginia, on 5 July 1908, as a memorial service for more than 200 men recently killed in the Monongah Mining Disaster, leaving 1,000 fatherless children. The idea belonged to Sonora Smart Dodd whose father William,

6

a Civil War veteran, had raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. This was at a time when motherhood was becoming increasingly sentimentalised, and Mothering Sunday (the fourth Sunday in Lent) was being more and more widely celebrated. Dodd felt that men deserved equal recognition. She won the support of the local YMCA and churches and, on the appointed Sunday, YMCA members all went to church wearing roses in their lapels to honour their dads. In what seems to have been a case of simultaneous invention, the town of Spokane, Washington,

held another Father’s Day service two years later. Spokane’s church service attracted much wider attention than Fairmont’s and became an annual event. President Wilson was a speaker at the 1916 event, and eight years later President Coolidge backed one of several failed bids in Congress to recognise it as a national holiday – an ambition only finally realised by President Nixon in 1972. If you haven’t started thinking about ideas for creative gifts and ways to celebrate, worry not. Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 20 this year, which still leaves you with plenty of time to prepare!

With the arrival of spring came the return of Scouting and Guiding to the Scout & Guide HQ. All groups are now meeting face-to-face in some way, making use of our outdoor space to once more enjoy our activities, in line with the guidance. Lots of fun has been had by various groups. In Guiding, Rainbows tackled building tents, Brownies enjoyed some campfire cooking, Guides have been making bird feeders and Rangers built robots! Meanwhile, in Scouting, Beavers have been doing their Gardener's badge and looking at seasonal changes, whilst Cubs and Scouts have enjoyed getting back to face-to-face meetings. Currently, there are spaces available in Scouting at Beavers (ages 6-8) and Cubs (ages 8-10). In Guiding there are spaces available in Rainbows (girls aged 5-7), Guides (girls aged 10-14) and Rangers (girls aged 14-18). If your child would like to join, please sign up via the Scouting or Guiding websites, or if you would like further information please email yaxleyscoutsandguides@gmail.com and we will put you in touch with the relevant leaders. We are also really excited for the Vintage Festival on 19 and 20 June to raise funds for the Scout & Guide HQ. We are looking forward to opening the gates to the village again for what seems like the first time in forever!

CAKE MAKING SUPPLIES  WORKSHOPS  ITEMS TO HIRE

We want everyone to enjoy the sunny weather safely this summer. High temperatures and dry areas of land can be perfect conditions for a fire to spread. Something as simple as not stubbing a cigarette out properly, or using a disposable barbecue on grass, can start a fire that can get out of control quickly. There are some simple steps we urge residents to take to help prevent an outdoor fire:  Use barbecues on a hard, flat surface, away from grass, shrubs or fencing.  Put disposable barbecues on bricks, do not place directly on grass.  Ensure cigarettes are completely out  Do not throw cigarettes out of car windows onto grass verges or vegetation  Do not leave glass bottles lying on the ground, the sun’s rays reflect

through the glass and can start a fire  Talk to your children about the dangers of starting a fire. TAX TIPS

Arrange your FREE no obligation valuation today OUTSTANDING VALUE Estate Agent

This is the second in a series of many tax tips from Bird & Co that will be spread over a period that may help you with a few of the many ways to save on tax, including checking your tax code, making the most of tax-free allowances and dozens of other ways to reduce your tax bill.

Google rated Agent “Excellent service! Incredibly helpful and responsive. Would definitely recommend” m.m feb–2021

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

7 

Get a season ticket loan - some employers will offer you a tax-free loan to buy your season ticket, potentially saving you hundreds on travel costs. Ask your employer if they’re part of the scheme.

8 

Claim tax-free childcare - under the tax-free childcare scheme, you can claim back 25% of your childcare costs, up to £500 every three months. You’ll have to meet set criteria, including having a child under 11 and earning less than £100,000. Alternatively, your employer may be willing to start a salary sacrifice childcare scheme. These are easy to establish and can result in substantial savings for both employees and employers.

9 

Get a company car - if you are entitled to a company car, consider whether it would be more taxefficient to take a cash equivalent in pay instead.

10 

Switch to a low-emission car - if you are changing your company car, consider a low-emissions model or perhaps a hybrid or electric .These are now taxed at a lower percentage of their list price than cars with a high CO2 rating.

11 

Maximise your personal savings allowance - in 2021/2022, you can earn £1,000 of interest on savings tax-free if you’re a basicrate taxpayer. If you’re a higher-rate taxpayer, your tax-free allowance is £500. Also see our Tax Tip 12 for additional amounts. You’ll only pay tax on savings income that exceeds this threshold. This will no longer be deducted automatically by the savings provider. If tax is due, you’ll need to pay it via self-assessment or have it deducted via PAYE. Keep in mind that you won’t have a savings allowance as an additionalrate (45%) taxpayer.

Use the starter rate for savings - if your income from a job or pension is below the £12,570 in 2021-22, but you earn income through interest on savings, you may also qualify for the starter savings allowance. Any interest you earn up to £5,000 is tax-free. This will be in addition to your personal savings allowance, meaning you could earn as much as £18,570 before paying tax.

Health walks One of the most powerful ways to maintain a healthy weight, stay strong, and live longer is so shockingly simple, even a toddler can do it. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other. The key is to ideally walk for at least 30 minutes a day, and whether you decide to lace up your trainers and walk to work, pair up with a friend, or join a hiking club, walking can do everything from lowering your blood pressure and reducing your risk of chronic diseases to making your brain sharper and your heart happier.

Health & Wellbeing Coach The Health and Wellbeing service we are offering at the Yaxley practice has begun to develop well in its initial first few months. As a Health and Wellbeing coach we work around what’s important to yourself and what matters to you. We aim to support you to find ways to incorporate healthy lifestyle changes into your daily life giving advice on matters such as managing long term conditions, exercise, nutrition, stress and sleep. We can also connect you with more community services within the area to further benefit your health and wellbeing. To arrange and appointment with your Health and Wellbeing Coach please contact your GP practice team or send a request for an appointment via Engage Consult https://engage.gp/1082/#/portal

The impact of a cooler spring All the indicators have pointed to this spring being colder than usual as well as hit first by drought and then too much rain and certainly most recording schemes are showing that the so called first signs of spring such as hazel flowers, frogspawn and bee emergence are on average three weeks behind 2020 Many young plant seedlings have emerged more purple of leaf a sign that phosphates are in low supply because below five Celsius plants are unable to absorb key micronutrients. However, this needs to be calibrated in terms of long-term trends if you look back at records from one hundred years ago these indicators were being noted between one and two months later into the year than today so, in fact, spring is still early. But the big question is what potential impact does this modern late spring have? A return to twenty years ago might actually be seen as a blessing for nature as the natural cycle of life is settling back into a recognised pattern, hibernation can continue and flowers and insects may emerge in synchronicity again. It

would certainly be good to think that nature is being enabled to rebalance but sadly this is perhaps not true. Before the late spring cold spell, we had a period of relative warmth and the fields and gardens began to buzz with bees. Since the bad weather returned there have been large numbers of bumblebees found dead across the area and this is not down to age as all are relatively young from New Year nests it raises questions as to whether the colonies can recover from such early season losses and what of the butterflies that were on the wing in February? Only time will tell what impact the recent weather trends have had on nature but let’s hope for more stable conditions for the remainder of the year to help nature recover.

to make the best use of any available moisture, meaning you’ll need to water up to 80% less. Our popular Oasis Treatment now features an innovative, highly concentrated seaweed extract which has proven to have an almost immediate visual effect on the colour of your lawn. This unique solution also improves the quality of your grass, benefits root development and helps with stress tolerance; what’s not to love!

now to allow your lawn to be the best it can be. By booking in Aeration and Scarification for Autumn, you’re giving your lawn the best defence against moss in the colder months. Naturally, one of the most important measures to keep your lawn as healthy as possible during this time of year, is ensuring the lawn receives enough moisture. It’s most beneficial to give a lawn a drink early in the morning or late in the evening.

Summer is a great season to spend more time enjoying your outdoor space, although sometimes we can experience extended periods of droughtlike conditions. While dry weather can’t be prevented, measures can be taken to prevent the damage it can inflict upon your lawn. If there is extensive dry weather this Summer, it can cause a lawn to stop growing, turn brown and appear patchy and worn. Fear not, GreenThumb’s expertise and experience, coupled with good lawn maintenance, will help your lawn resist drought, and recover stronger than ever.

At this time of year, we also recommend implementing a regular mowing regime to help your lawn be the best it can be. Dry, sunny days are the best conditions for mowing, however it’s important that your mower blades are kept sharp or replaced when needed to avoid causing damage to the grass plant. It is also important, especially during the summer months, that your grass isn’t cut too short as this will weaken it, attracting unwanted weeds. When dry, we advise raising the height of your cut from 1” up to 2” and give it a good drink the day after mowing.

Dry weather can quickly turn your grass yellow, while rain – on what looks like a lovely green lawn – can spur the growth of moss and weeds. So, act

Hanging Baskets Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year and they make fabulous hanging baskets and planters. All you need is readily available from your local garden centre. Firstly, choose a goodsized basket (easier to keep moist than a smaller one) and a hanging-basket liner, or a good-sized pot or planter with plenty of drainage holes. A good quality multipurpose compost is essential for excellent results. The range of plants is vast, so carefully consider the colours and textures: decide on subtle or brash and bold, and whether you want to coordinate the flowers with other garden features. To get started with your planting, place your basket in a large flowerpot as this stops the round-bottomed basket from moving. Place the liner in the basket, adjusting it to fit the basket and trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up to the point where you want to plant around the sides of the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a base of broken flowerpots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within around 10cm of the pot rim.

Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but firmly. An upright plant such as a fuchsia or pelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container, as it helps to give your planting height and structure. Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket. Drizzle compost around and between the root balls of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Use your fingers to firm the compost and make sure that there are no gaps.

TIPS ● Never let the compost dry out completely. Use a watering can with a rose attached or a gentle spray nozzle on the end of a hose. ● If the container does become too dry, sit it in a bowl of water for about an hour, allowing it to soak up the water it needs from the base and sides. ● Regularly remove faded flowers as this will help to encourage the plants to continue producing more flowers.

Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. Finally give your basket or pot a few days’‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine.

● Check regularly for any pests such as greenfly and treat the problem promptly. When plants are tightly crammed together, problems soon build up and spread if you’re not quick off the mark. ● Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will help to encourage more flowers to develop.

And whilst May reminds us, June is when nature really starts to deliver. Our wild world feels absolutely unstoppable in June…and if you’re a gardener then this is when the weeds feel the same. You can do nothing but admire the innate drive of life and the world to grow and race to produce and reproduce. It is the pressure cooker whose lid cannot be re-placed until summer has had her way, her energies spent, harvest complete, and the calm of autumn is all that’s left. Anyway, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. In June we typically have delights such as fresh peas that flowered in May and produce in June, and note I say typically because the

Though a bit wet and a bit cold in 2021, May never fails to deliver the reminder of life and the scent of flowers, the feel of a warm breeze, the sight of the myriad colours of green; sensations robbed by the grey and the haze of winter, and especially a winter of wet and an April of frost such as we’ve ‘enjoyed’ this past year.

frosts in April and the late cold weather in May has delayed this season’s bounty from the ‘A’ of asparagus to the ‘Z’ of Courgette (a play on words for those transatlantic cousins nestled in the bosom of the Cambridgeshire/ Northamptonshire borders). But not for long. Look out for, well, practically everything in season this month! June is when the farm is (I expect) motoring. We have our longest days, the maximum potential for sunshine, when our crops are acting as solar panels turning the sun’s energy (and our expended carbon dioxide) into sugars, and ultimately to grain, bean, fruit, seed, or vegetable. And they’re

combatting climate change too; but I’ll talk about that another day. In June, on 27th to be precise, it’s also Open Farm Sunday, when farmers across the country are opening their gates and welcoming guests. We’ll be open of course, though do book your slots using the website www.FarmSunday.org so we can manage traffic flow. Bring your picnic but leave your pooch at home. Come and meet the stars of the farm and enjoy guided tours of paddock, plantation, and pond. We hope to see you there, and we’ll be able to thank you in person – as we do every month in this column – for supporting great British farmers and food producers.

younggazette William de Yaxley Fabulous Fundraising at William De Yaxley with an exhilarating week of fun for Comic Relief The children got really involved and as a consequence we raised in excess of £2500! In order for the children to get the most out of the day we ensured a range of activities and fun events would occur.

The children and staff of Woodland room at Stretton Pre-School have been excited to welcome some baby caterpillars into the class.

To begin with we purchased boxes of red noses which were then on sale to initially start raising funds for Comic Relief, this was a great success and the children enjoyed the surprise of not knowing which character their nose would be. On the day we had a bake sale in each Class Bubble within school with many delicious looking treats across the school and faces of delight when eating them. In addition to this everyone in school was encouraged to dress up as their superhero for the day.

colouring from across the year groups. Furthermore, every day for the week of comic relief each class had dedicated time on the school field (which is their usual daily mile time) to run as many laps as they could. The children were asked to try and get sponsored either for the number of laps they could run in total or a set amount for completing each day of the school week. It was a pleasure to see how motivated the children were each day and to see them all continuously encourage each other. This is something the children engaged well with and pushed themselves more each day. Within the classes all the laps were recorded to help the children keep track of their success and prizes were received in each class, while also giving them something to work on in maths and computing using their lap count.

outandabout “Earth and sky, woods and fields, lakes and rivers, the mountain and the sea, are excellent schoolmasters, and teach of us more than we can ever learn from books.” John Lubbock

CAMPING dget on a bu

Overseas holidays are looking limited at best this year, and many people are unable to afford to go anyway. However, it doesn’t mean you have to go without a break completely because camping can be great fun and very affordable. You’ll need to apply to some creativity to sourcing your equipment, as an hour on one of the many outdoor websites could have you thinking that the whole event is going to be far too expensive – especially if you aren’t sure if you’ll do it more than once.

Freecycle, or a polite plea to your friends could produce a surprising haul for you to borrow. With British weather being what it is, an inexpensive gazebo will give you the reassurance of shelter from the sun or rain. A fun thing to do is to hang battery-powered fairy lights from the gazebo frame, making an atmospheric leisure/party area for after dark.

Firstly, the tent. Take advantage of somebody else’s impulse buy by visiting second-hand sites to see what you can snap up – eBay of course, but don’t forget Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Sleeping bags might be necessary if you are hiking across the mountains, but chances are you’ll be driving to your camping site so take your own duvets and pillows with some old covers and that will be perfectly adequate. A night’s sleep on the hard ground isn’t comfortable though, so you’ll need to find something to lie on. Cushions from outdoor chairs or a beach lilo will be good enough for children, but you might want to invest in an inflatable mattress for the adults.

You might not be able to look your glamorous best while camping and really, why would you? It’s time to get back to nature. However, it doesn’t mean you won’t want to clean up every day and proper toilet facilities are a must. Fortunately, these days all but the most rural sites will have a shower and toilet block. Now onto the web to decide which site to go to. For example, www.pitchup.com has 5,000 UK and Ireland sites listed and it allows you to filter the features that are a ‘must’ for you and those that are a ‘nice to have’.

Other equipment such as a gas stove, water containers and plastic plates might be offered to you if you put a wanted advert on Gumtree or on

Still not convinced? If you think this sounds like more hassle than it’s worth, you might want to consider ‘glamping’. It’s still sleeping in an open area surrounded by trees, but the living accommodation is provided for you. Many sites offer tipis, yurts, wooden huts or even a gypsy caravan. This is going to cost more, of course, but is still very affordable. Finally, you won’t be the only one looking for a cheap summer break, so go online and book your pitch now. •

Open water swimming returns to Nene Park The team at Nene Outdoors is delighted to announce the return of weekly open water swimming sessions on Gunwade Lake from Thursday 13 May. Open water swimming is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, combing an opportunity to improve fitness with an enjoyment of the outdoors. Whether you are training for a triathlon or just want to take part in an activity which is sociable as well as good for you, just come along and have a go! You'll be able to enjoy the freedom of swimming outdoors with the confidence of knowing our safety team are on standby to make sure your swim remains safe. Swimming takes place around a 400m course on Gunwade lake in Ferry Meadows, a relatively sheltered and shallow lake (4.5m maximum depth) fed by freshwater from the River Nene. Swimmers can complete the 400m circuit as many times as they like during the session and can then use the facilities at Nene Outdoors Watersports and Activity centre, including the heated changing rooms and showers. All swimmers are required to wear a NOWCA safety Wristband every time they swim, which is their own personal profile on their wrist. Swimmers use their wristband to scan themselves in and out of the water, which means that the team at Nene Outdoors know exactly who and how many swimmers are in the water, at any time. For you as a swimmer, wearing your NOWCA Safety Wristband will also speed

your entry into the water plus record your swim time and distance, just like wearing a chip at a triathlon. If you are new to NOWCA and don't have a NOWCA band yet, sign up online before your first swim at www.nowca.org and hit the red 'REGISTER' button at the top of the page, complete the form, citing Nene Outdoors as the venue. You will be able to collect your wristband from the centre ready for your first swim! Your wristband can then be used at all the NOWCA safety accredited lakes and venues all over the country. Please note all swimmers will be required to wear a brightly coloured swim cap. Bring your own or buy one on arrival from Nene Outdoors. Wetsuits are available to hire. Use of wetsuits is compulsory for swimmers under the age of 16. The sessions are weekly on Thursdays 5.30–7pm and cost £5.50 a session. Sessions can be booked in advance online at: www.nenepark.org.uk/openwater-swimming James Sainsbury, Manager of Nene Outdoors said "We are so glad that as restrictions are being further lifted, we can add yet another exciting watersport activity to the offer at Nene Outdoors. We look forward to welcoming back familiar faces from last year and new faces who are keen to try out this new sport."

DON’T DWELL ON THE PAST Studies show people who tend to dwell on the past regularly are less healthy than those who live in the present. I recently heard a story about a small boy who was walking along the beach happily kicking a ball. Suddenly a gust of wind took the ball out into the Sea. Standing at the waters edge with his hands clenched by his side he sadly watched the tide take the ball further away even though he could have reached it easily at first he didn’t move. “Why didn’t you get the ball” asked his Dad. The boy replied “I couldn’t, if I had opened my hands I would have dropped my shells”.

Do we hold on to things from the past that prevent us from fully living in the present. On hearing this story I immediately thought ‘am I holding on to regrets instead of dropping them and going after that ball?’ We may be holding tightly to the old ways of doing things. Things that feel true and trusted. Change and new ways of doing things unsettle us. But we could be missing out on something exciting that offers us new friendships, peace, hope or a new adventure if we only open our hands and let the shells that are holding us back drop. We will continue our online Services on our Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook and You Tube site every Sunday from 10.30, and Prayers on Weekday mornings at 8.30. We would love you to join us then or catch up later. And we hope that we will be able to welcome you back into our Chapel very soon. Take care and keep safe until we can meet again.

ST PETER'S CHURCH Dear Friends, We are excited that the building work has started in St Peter’s which, when completed in the autumn, will give us more toilets, better kitchen facilities and serving area and a new room upstairs. We went back into the church building for Easter and since then have been online for our worship services. However, we are now making plans to return to the church building at the end of May. By the time that you read this, we should be back in the church building for one service at 9.30am. You are really welcome to join us, but you will need to let us know if you will be coming to a service to ensure that we can maintain social distancing until we know what the easing of lockdown restrictions in June will mean for us – please just email or phone me if you would like to attend. We will also be continuing

with one service online at 11.00am. You will find us on our YouTube Channel – St Peter’s Church – Yaxley YouTube. We are looking at the book of Acts in our church services at the moment. This is the book that follows the four Gospels that outline the life, work and teaching of Jesus. Acts is the point where those first friends of Jesus start the first Christian church and community. The book of Acts is fairly fast paced and we see these first Christians navigating a new and a changed world for them. Their world changed completely but they set about to build new community and spread the news about Jesus. There was nothing easy about this and they came across many twists and turns, hurdles and barriers. I don’t know about you, but the first time someone gave me a date for an event this year, it was

wonderful to write something in my diary rather than rubbing it out. It is lovely to see through this magazine and the Facebook page that places are starting to open, events are being able to be planned and we need that hope. We know that there is much to rebuild, much has changed. We have lost loved people, we have lost opportunities and have all been impacted in some way. At St Peter’s we will be looking to restart events and groups slowly over the next few months, but we know that some will not start until the Autumn due to the building work and while we take time to understand new guidance and changes and plan. Do join us on a Sunday for our services. Explorers will be running again in half term from the 31st May so keep your eyes open for more information and do come and explore with us.

With every blessing for the coming weeks, Rev Sarah yaxleyvicar@gmail.com www.saintpeters.co.uk Facebook-square/groups/stpetersyaxley t: 01733 248 690 / 07498 230 858

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK IN YAXLEY Thank you so much to all who contributed last month to Christian Aid’s work amongst some of the world’s most deprived people - those facing both the ravages of the virus and the climate crisis. I look forward to reporting on the total raised in next month’s edition. Thank you also to the willing team of 40 volunteers from St Peter’s who made the delivery of the gift envelopes around the parish possible. John Harper (Rev)

Keep dogs safe Dog owners are increasingly concerned about their dogs being stolen from them. We are urging the public to keep their dogs SECURE, IN SIGHT and SEARCHABLE. DogLost, a UK charity that helps victims of dog theft, recorded a 170% increase in the crime, from 172 dogs reported stolen in 2019 to 465 dogs in 2020. To help keep your dog safe we have pulled together some top tips on how to keep your dog SECURE, IN SIGHT AND SEARCHABLE and reduce your chances of becoming a victim of dog theft. SECURE  Pets are easily stolen from a garden when left unattended, even if for just a few minutes. Front gardens are very vulnerable. Fit a bell or gate alarm to any rear or side gates; the gates should be secured with British Standard locks, locking bolts or closed shackle padlocks.  Secure your garden boundary to prevent your dog from escaping or a thief from reaching in and taking your dog out.  Be particularly careful of sharing or publicly posting on social media details of where you live, the type of dog you have and where you walk. IN SIGHT  Never leave your dog unattended in a car – especially on warm days – as it is not just dangerous for their health but allows them to be easily targeted by thieves.  Leaving your dog alone outside a shop is another easy opportunity for a thief, even if you are only away for a minute.  It’s important your dog will return when called; if it is not trained to do this, be very careful of allowing them off the lead, especially in unfamiliar areas. You may wish to keep them on an extending lead instead.  Varying the times and routes you take when walking your dog.  Be careful of strangers asking you a lot of questions when you are walking

your dog – they could be distracting you to make it easy for them to steal your dog.  If you need to use a dog walking service or kennels, make sure you check references carefully to ensure the offer is genuine or the company is trusted. SEARCHABLE  Make sure your dog is microchipped and the details are correct on any of the recognised pet registration databases..  Fit your dog with a collar; the tag on the collar should have a contact number and your surname, not the name of the dog.  Make sure you take pictures of your dog from various angles, especially if they have distinctive markings or features. A further photo of you with your dog can help to prove ownership. Taking photos of your dog in various conditions can also help, such as with a groomed coat or an untidy one. And what about the law? At present, dog theft is not defined as a specific crime, with dogs classed as ‘property’ under the Theft Act 1968. If caught, the penalty for stealing pets is generally a small fine or suspended sentence, with the Pet Theft Reform campaign reporting that in recent years only 1% of dog theft crimes have led to a prosecution. If you have information about those behind organised dog theft, puppy smuggling or illegal breeding and wish to remain anonymous. you can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on the phone or online – just call 0800 555 111 or using their online form on their website - you’ll stay 100% anonymous. Always.

Slimming World burger recipe Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour & 25 minutes Serves: 4

Ingredients             

4 spring onions, finely chopped 1 tsp garlic salt 500g lean beef mince (5% fat or less) Large handful of fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 tsp mustard powder, mixed with 2 tsp water 1 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise 2 tbsp fat-free natural fromage frais 8 back bacon rashers, visible fat removed 4 x 60g wholemeal rolls, halved 1 little gem lettuce, shredded 1 red onion, thinly sliced into rings 4 gherkins, thinly sliced 2 tomatoes, thinly sliced

For the wedges:   

4 baking potatoes, scrubbed and cut into wedges Low-calorie cooking spray 2 level tbsp Cajun seasoning

For the coleslaw:    

3 large carrots, peeled and coarsely grated ½ green cabbage, finely shredded 1 level tbsp extra-light mayonnaise 6 tbsp fat-free natural fromage frais

Method B

Preheat your oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Spray the wedges with low-calorie cooking spray and toss in the Cajun seasoning. Arrange on a non-stick baking tray in a single layer, season lightly and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden.

C

Meanwhile, put the spring onions, garlic salt, mince and parsley in a bowl. Season and mix well using your hands. Form into 8 flat burgers and put on a plate lined with baking paper. Cover and chill for 25 minutes.

D

In a small bowl, mix together the mustard, mayonnaise and fromage frais, and season. Cover and chill. Mix together all the coleslaw ingredients, season, cover and chill.

E Preheat your grill to hot. Grill the bacon for 3-4 minutes each side, or until crisp. Keep warm. F

Place a large non-stick frying pan sprayed with low-calorie cooking spray over a high heat. Gently press the burgers into the pan and cook for 1 minute each side (you might need to do this in batches). Reduce the heat to medium and cook for a further 5 minutes, or until done to your liking, turning often. Drain on kitchen paper.

G

Toast the rolls then fill each with lettuce, onion rings, gherkins, the burgers, tomato slices and bacon. Top with the mayonnaise sauce from earlier and serve with the wedges and slaw sprinkled with black pepper.

Pan-fried mackerel fillet with lemon spring vegetables Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 15 minutes Serves: 2

Ingredients            

25g butter 1 banana shallot, peeled and sliced 1 clove garlic, peeled and crushed 400g mixed fresh vegetables (broad beans, carrots, peas, spring greens, broccoli, etc) 100ml stock Juice and zest of 1/2 lemon Sea salt and freshly ground pepper 150g crème fraiche 3-4 sprigs dill, roughly chopped 1/2 tbsp olive oil 2 large mackerel fillets Lemon wedges, to serve

Method B

Heat the butter in a sauté pan or deep frying pan. Gently cook the shallot for about 5 minutes until it starts to soften and becomes translucent. Add the garlic and cook for another couple of minutes.

C

Add the vegetable mix, cutting anything large like carrots, to match the size of the other vegetables. Stir for a minute or so, pour in the stock and lemon juice, and add the zest. Season, then cover and cook for 5 minutes.

D Spoon in the creme fraiche and dill and cook for another 3-4 minutes. E

Heat another frying pan with the olive oil. Slice the mackerel fillets in half lengthways, taking out any bones you may find. Season the fish then pan-fry for 2 minutes on each side.

F Serve the mackerel on a bed of the vegetables with plenty of lemon wedges and some new potatoes.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People train dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds they would otherwise miss – sounds that many people take for granted like the doorbell, alarm clock and even danger signals like the fire alarm. Being aware of these – thanks to a hearing dog – makes a real difference to deaf people’s lives and can even save them. As a voluntary dog trainer as well as being a speaker, Pam will talk about how a cute, cuddly puppy makes this amazing journey to change a deaf person’s life. It seems that it is not only driveways, garden clearance and replacement guttering (to name a few) that are target areas for the cowboy builders and scammers. Another trade that has fallen foul of the rogue traders is locksmiths, as highlighted on BBC One’s Rip Off Britain on 10 May 2021. The trade is unregulated which means that anyone can buy a kit and then advertise themselves as a locksmith. According to experts, the racket has reached an 'industrial scale' due to the pandemic. According to recent surveys:  More than 800 complaints were made about rogue locksmiths over the past year  In two thirds of cases customers are being overcharged by £200 or more  In one example, a locksmith quoted a price of £49, but the final bill came to £1,604 Sadly, daily cases are being recorded from consumers with stories about unscrupulous activities by people masquerading as locksmiths; overcharging for sub-standard work, displaying threatening behaviour and even withholding key to locks that have fitted. There are a number of red flags for spotting the scammers when hiring a locksmith, and here are a few tell-tale signs that the so-called locksmith may be far from reputable:  Calls are answered by a call centre which makes it difficult to obtain details for the locksmith doing the job. This can also mean you don’t know who is doing the work as jobs are often subcontracted.

 The company is ranked at or towards the top of online advertising listings. As they have paid to be there, this isn’t an indication about the quality of their work.  The locksmith is vague about their experience and they may be reluctant to provide feedback about previous jobs or recommendations.  Drilling is a method of destructive entry and is only used as a last resort when all other methods haven’t worked with cylinders. Many rogues start with the drill and this should ring alarm bells.

The advice on ‘Rip off Britain’ is that when faced with being locked out of your home, you will no doubt panic. Be wary of just using the internet as some of these rogues pay to be promoted at the top of advertising listings. They recommend that, even though you may not need a locksmith at the moment, store a number in your phone; that way if anything happens in the future, you’ve got a number of a reputable locksmith you can use. Safe Local Trades would also urge homeowners to always call in the professionals – and we are lucky to have our very own reputable and vetted locksmith as a member.

LOCKSMITH DOCTOR Locksmith Doctor Gary Braesyde offers the key to a professional and successful solution, in more ways than one, with a motto of wanting to save our customers money – with no call-out fees and no hourly labour – just good honest pricing and always going the extra mile for customers.
