So, anyone made any New Year's resolutions? Mine are the same as last year, continuing to focus on my family and friends, and another resolution would be to have a holiday this year! We have a warm welcome for bowlers of any age, whether you are new to the game, returning after a spell on the sidelines, or an experienced bowler looking for a new home, give our green a look. Yes I’m biased, but it is probably the best green in the greater Peterborough area (if not beyond). Yaxley Parish Council Keeping on top of local issues Throughout the pandemic, and like so many others, all of our staff have been hard at work keeping on top of local issues and concerns, bookings and maintaining our premises and grounds, ensuring that we can react to policy changes and return to normal as soon as possible.

Welcome With the New Year, we start all over again, and we welcome Freya Harold as a new member of our Groundwork Team. The winter months see the Parish Council swapping the ride on mowers for hedge cutter equipment. The focus is on cutting back overgrown hedges, including those at the Recreation Ground, Queen's Park, Waterslade Road, Great Drove and the cemetery, and completed between November and the end of February to avoid the bird nesting season and the busier grass growing months.

Litter bins Our waste disposal contractor has raised concerns about contaminated waste. The Parish Council

empties over 70 litter bins around the village every Monday and Friday and would remind residents that these should not be used to dispose of their general household waste. Should you need to bin the contents of your fridge before you go away or dispose of used cat litter which has unfortunately become evident recently, please do not place it in the public litter bins.

Dog waste

Report it If you see something that needs attention please assist us by reporting it directly to the proper authority. If unsure, our clerk may be able to help direct you. Highways problems, dropped kerbs, pot holes, street lighting etc. https://bit.ly/3GI0R13 Dog fouling, fly-tipping, graffiti etc. https://bit.ly/3oSR7uR

A reminder that all the bins, including the grey bins, around the village can be used to deposit dog waste and we do appreciate that the majority of dog walkers are responsible and pick up after their pet. However, there continues to be a few who appear unable to do this during darker evenings.. No-one wants to step in dog waste and nor do we wish to see poo bags hanging in trees and hedges.

Burns Night

January always seems a bit of an anticlimax after December but you need only wait until January 25th, when the same inventive Scots who gave you Hogmanay and the first hangover of the year proudly present Burns Night.

Rabbie Burns (1759-96) came from a family of small-to-middling Ayrshire farmers who, although far from wealthy, made sure he had a good education. Don’t let the folksiness of his poetry fool you: Burns was a proficient linguist and classical scholar with a sophisticated and well-stocked mind. As a young man he seemed to be a solid citizen, working on the farm and joining the Freemasons. But already he was showing signs of what was to become his great weakness: the lassies. His earliest surviving work, O Once I Loved a Bonnie Lass, dates from 1774 when he was fifteen. After his father died in 1784 he went off the rails. In 1785 he made his mother’s maid pregnant and in March 1786 an old flame, Jean Armour, gave birth to his twins. In April he claimed to have married her by folk custom, but in May he married Mary Campbell, again in a traditional ceremony of exchanging Bibles. In June he repudiated them both, and in

October, Mary, who was carrying his child, died of typhus. By then Rabbie had already set his cap at a married woman, Nancy MacLehose. They conducted a steamy affair but only by letter, so Rabbie consoled himself with her maid, who bore him a son the following year. By that time, though, he was back with Jean: they married in February 1788 and Rabbie’s wild days were over. While this was going on, his first book was published and was an instant hit. After marrying he settled down as a customs official in Dumfries, continuing to turn out poetry and collections of folk songs. Alas, his health was poor, and on 21st July 1796 he died. His fame continued to spread posthumously, and his friends started holding commemorative dinners on the anniversary of his death. In 1801 the first Burns Club was founded and switched the date to his birthday. The part that most people associate with the Burns Night supper is the Entrance of the

Haggis. Everyone stands as the main course is brought in. This is always a haggis on a large dish and is brought in while a piper plays bagpipes and leads the way to the host's table. A speaker then recites a long poem called Address to a Haggis, during which the speaker would usually draw and clean a knife, plunge it into the haggis and cut it open from end to end. There is, needless to say, a considerable amount of whisky involved. More whisky, in fact, than

Burns himself probably saw in his lifetime. The spirit was only legalised in 1784 and remained a Highland speciality for many years after – as a Lowlander, Burns would have seen far more brandy than whisky.

At our November meeting, we held our AGM, but unfortunately no members came forward to join the committee, however, we were very pleased to welcome 6 new members. After the business was concluded, we tried making Christmas gift tags/ candy cane trees but I don't think any will be completed for this Christmas!

Nevermind, we all had fun trying and did celebrate Christmas early by having mince pies for refreshments. Our first meeting in 2022 will be from 2- 4 on 13 January at Queen's Park Pavilion, Daimler Avenue, Yaxley and visitors will be very welcome. Our speaker will be Sylvia Diamond talking about her incredible journey.

Scientifically speaking, Holme WI ladies enjoyed their Christmas meeting!

The Knit and Knatter group has been knitting for the Helping Hands appeal?

HOLME WI

Fun science, celebrations and great woolly thinking ... We made it to December still being able to hold a meeting indoors, and what a fun meeting it was. We had Fun Science with a lovely lady called Pat, who showed us a fun way to enjoy this area of knowledge. Sitting in groups, we tried different experiments. We made a thaumatrope, a popular toy in the 19th century, which demonstrates the persistence of vision and is often seen an important antecedent of motion pictures and animation.

Using a design of a bird and a birdcage which was stapled to a straw and then spun in our hands making the bird appear inside the birdcage. Balloon animals were also made, and a ‘duck’ using a paper cup with string threaded through it, and when we pulled on the string it made a quacking noise, or was supposed to! We created erupting volcanoes using vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. Then, a mixture

Calling all Yaxley Nightingales I have been researching my family history for about 15 years and have discovered many previously unknown stories, including the fact that, although I grew up in County Durham, most of my direct ancestors before 1870 lived in Northamptonshire in villages around Pattishall. Although I can trace my family back to the 17th century I have never been able to get back any further. Through the magic of Ancestry.co.uk I found that one of my ancestors, Thomas Nightingale, my 7 times Great Grandfather, who died in 1715 at Cold Higham near Pattishall, may have been born in Yaxley around 1655. This made me wonder if there are still any connections in that area. Having checked the 1911 Census, the latest currently available, I see that there were several families of Nightingales listed in a total population of around 2000 so it seems entirely possible that some of their descentants are still in the area. Are you a Yaxley Nightingale? If so, do you have any knowledge of your family ancestors that you are willing to exchange with me? I would love to hear from you, even if your information is incomplete – I am more than willing to do more digging around Ancestry data to fill in blanks. of cornflour and water which looks like liquid in its container, yet feels like a solid substance when touched, but when manipulated, becomes liquid. Very unusual! It is a non-Newtonian fluid, that doesn’t follow Newton’s law of viscosity, apparently. I won’t get any more technical than that! It lived up to its name though, and was all very good fun! Alleviating winter blues The darker days and nights caused by the shorter daylight hours of winter can have a huge effect on how we feel. If you find yourself wanting to eat and sleep more during winter or are less eager to get out and socialise, tips to alleviate the winter blues are at hand.

If you feel a dip in mood and a lack of enthusiasm during winter, you are not alone. Our internal patterns of sleep, appetite, sex drive, temperature, mood and activity all rely on natural light cycles. I learned a valuable lesson of allowing myself to adjust to acknowledge that it is winter time and it will be different to summer. Giving ourselves permission to be different, manage the expectations of those around us. What is important is to get as much daylight as we can do during the daylight hours. Adjusting our desk space at work to turn to a window or source of natural light, go for a walk or wrap up and head outside for a walk at lunchtime if you are able to.

Feeling SAD? Over two million people in the UK are affected by Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The low levels of light during the winter months can cause a range of symptoms, from slowing down and lacking energy right through to severe depression. Other symptoms include feeling gloomy, lethargic and experiencing feelings of being unable to carry out our normal routine. Not wanting to go outdoors, loss of libido and craving sweet carbohydrates are also indicators of SAD.

Light therapy has been shown to be extremely helpful for many sufferers and is very easy to use in the form of a lightbox, which mimics natural sunlight and can be used daily. These devices are readily available in the shops and online for desktops and freestanding.

The great outdoors Many of us feel low in winter and research shows this can be related to decreased exposure to natural light. Getting outdoors each day is crucial to tackling winter blues, as it increases our exposure to sunlight and can positively impact on our mood. If you can get into a place of nature, such as a forest or near to water, once or twice a week, research has shown that the healthrelated benefits include lower blood pressure, help with reducing anxiety and mild depression. Mind, a mental health charity has content on the full range of benefits on their website along with some great ideas on how to use nature to benefit our mental health. Not only that but being outdoors almost always means you are doing exercise – even if it’s just washing the car – and that is beneficial in itself.

Teaming up Both exercise and socialising stimulate and boost endorphins, those wonderful feel-good chemicals in our bodies that help to lift our mood. While doing a home workout is better than nothing, it does mean you are missing out on contact with people. Ideally join a group – something like Nordic Walking or a dance class – but even if it’s just a weights session in the gym, if you go often enough you’ll start to see the same faces each time you are there. Often somebody saying “Hello” is all that’s needed to lift your spirit. If we consider our body as a pool of water, such as a pond, if you let it sit for long periods of time it starts to become stagnant. If we use a pump in the pond, it put oxygen in the water and reduces that. Like our body, if we use our pump (heart), it allows a good flow of oxygen around our body.

Think about joining a group too. Evening classes start at many colleges in January, or find out if there’s any voluntary work you can do. Of course, if you are feeling a bit January blue, you might be thinking “I don’t have time to do any of this.” But most of us seem to find time to watch TV or do mindless internet browsing. Recognise that it’s taking the first step that’s the most difficult part, but once you do the momentum will build and before you know it, spring will be here! In and around Yaxley, there are some places where we can go to have a chat and a cuppa with others, including:  MIND, Feel Good Café, which is at The Farmers. Details can be found on their website.  Huntingdonshire Health Walks, which meet at the library in Yaxley

People power

 The lunchtime sitting at the British Legion as well as the recently started lunchtime sitting for parents and children to attend.

Even if you actually quite enjoy your own company, you do need people contact too. If your family or friends don’t live nearby, make a point of having a face-to-face call instead of just messaging.

If there is a thought, it is that the shortest day was on 21st December and so day by day there is more daylight.

After School Clubs at Fourfields CP School! When the children of Fourfields return to school in January 2022 they will be offered an exciting and varied timetable of after school and lunchtime clubs.

Most of the clubs are run by our very own teachers and teaching assistants and our clubs programme offers the children the chance to try lots of new things. Activities range from sports clubs, dance, cross country to the school choir, gardening, art, cooking, reading and science. We also offer Tae Kwon Do and Drama sessions that are held in school and run by local companies.

At Fourfields CP School we recognise how important it is for children to take part in extracurricular activities. Fourfields are working with the Cooperative and environmental charity Groundwork, to enhance our local landscapes! The project will create sustainable community spaces, with designs for community pocket park on the green spaces in between the Co-op and Fourfields School. Designs include improved access, seating, low beds for the development of a pollinator, longraised bed, as well as sensory planting.

Children at Fourfields will be able to help and get involved throughout the project by planting, seeding or creating bug hotels and in the future use this area for wildflower identification, and cutting or ecological surveys with transacts. This is a fantastic opportunity to promote community engagement and experience a range of environmental learning opportunities for our students.

Fourfields Children in Young Voices Concert!

Art and Science FARCET C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been a great few weeks of learning here at Farcet.

Fourfields CP School are so excited to be taking part in the Young Voices Concert at the O2 Arena in London! On Thursday 13th January we will be taking 48 of our Year 4 children to London to take part in this incredible concert. Our children will be singing lots of songs including, Power in Me, Mambo and The Lion King Medley! Children will perform alongside 5,0008,000 other children as a single choir to capacity audiences of family and friends.

Children taking part in YV have the opportunity to perform in some of the world’s greatest arenas alongside incredible artists. To achieve this with all their school friends around them for support, it helps their self-belief, selfmotivation, confidence, and ability to communicate as part of a team - which is invaluable! We wish all the children participating the best of luck!!!

Our Year 5 and 6 class have been enjoying their science lessons this half term and have been thinking about the difference between a mixture and a solution. The children were given a mixture and had to separate the substances the challenge was to get the water as clear as possible. Everyone did a great job - we had some very clear water by the end of the lesson! Year 1 and 2 Edison Class visited our local park as part of their Design Technology unit. They were

investigating freestanding structures and used the information to inform their own designs. Our Year 1 and Reception children have been inspired by local artist Louise Coe. Mrs Coe showed us the hoops she makes. We loved making our own apple design. Thank you for visiting us! We all focused on kindness during Anti-bullying week this term and made a pledge to help stop bullying and show kindness to all people. We are looking forward to the spring term and all of the fantastic learning opportunities it will bring!

History, Geography, Science and Art WILLIAM DE YAXLEY

Last school year the teachers were trialling some units and this term we launched our new knowledge based curriculum in 4 subjects – history, geography, science and art. It is a carefully sequenced, knowledge-rich curriculum which aims to inspire pupils and promote excellent outcomes for all. The curriculum content has been carefully chosen by subject experts and is organised in a coherent way, ensuring children can build on their knowledge from year to year. In each subject children have a knowledge organiser which shows the key dates, people, events/processes and vocabulary for each topic. In geography all year groups have studied units on maps and mapping skills. Year 6 have learned why the world looks different on some maps depending on the projection. To help them understand why, the children drew the continent outlines on oranges, peeled them and tried to lay the peel flat. It also helped them to understand that it is difficult to represent something 3D in 2 dimensions. Year 3 have been using Ordnance Survey maps and can now use 4 and 6 figure grid references to describe where places are located on maps. Year 4 have been learning some of the impoartnt lines which are marked on maps and globes including the equator, the tropics and the poles. They also know the difference between lines of longitude and lines of latitude. In history year 5 have loved learning about the city of Baghdad. They know that important trading routes, knowledge, wealth and craftsmanship all passed through the city, helping it to earn the name the City of Peace. They can also describe the unusual layout of the city. The children can enthusiastically describe the Mongol attack in 1258, which destroyed much of the city. Many of the books which were housed in the ‘House of Wisdom’ were thrown into the river, making the River Tigris run black with ink.

In science year 4 have enjoyed learning about the digestive system. The digestive system inlcudes a number of organs: Our brain, which sends signals to parts of the mouth called the salivary glands, which creates a watery liquid called saliva. The stomach stirs up the food and secretes digestive enzymes and gastric acid to aid digestion. The intestines move the food around. Whilst in the intestine, the nutrients are absorbed by the blood. Most digestion occurs in the small intestine where vitamins and other nutrients are absorbed. In the large intestine the last of the nutrients are absorbed, and what remains is passed out as faeces. It’s funny how children always remember the last one! Year 3 have learned about artists including Warhol, Morandi, Stubbs, Cezanne and Moser who have all produced still life artwork. They have considered concepts and questions such as: What is a still life? And what has still life artwork looked like throughout history? They have explored how to highlight or shade using colour and pencil techniques like crosshatching. To link with the work in history, year 5 have been learning about Islamic art and architecture. They have looked at buildings such as The Dome of the Rock, The Alhambra and The Taj Mahal and noticed how geometric patterns, vegetal patterns, calligraphy, tilework and plasterwork are all important features of these buildings. They also noticed the domes, minarets and arches. The children used rulers and compasses to draw geometric patterns based on the art and architecture they had seen. Our knowledge based curriculum is cumulative and helps build firm foundations. Children develop an understanding of concepts such as empire or democracy over time. Teaching does not jump from topic to topic, but enables children to develop a love of subjects. It inspires children and plants the seeds for a lifetime of learning.

Donation Appreciation STRETTON PRE-SCHOOL

Some of you may remember that earlier in the year our Stretton Pre-school’s Main Street site was targeted by vandals and sadly some of our outdoor resources were damaged beyond repair. A social media post, quickly turned into a GoFundMe page and a phenomenal amount of £1,780.00 was raised from an initial target of £250.00, which far exceeded anyone’s expectations. We the staff, and committee are still completely blown away by the outpouring of community spirit, support and generosity of the local people, businesses and the wider surrounding community. From offers of replacement resources to offers of the loan of staff to come help clean up and

rebuild, it was very humbling. Local businesses were at the forefront of these donations with Yaxley Carpets, PPV Group, Broadway Garage and Meridian Gymnastics all very generously donating, and we also had some very generous private donations. With the incredible donations, some amazing resources have been purchased for the children, these really enrich their environment, learning opportunities and are already a massive hit. A HUGE thank you to every single person that donated, you have all made a massive difference and we all really can’t thank you all enough! Charlie Baxter, Pre-school Manager

Festive Times and Fundraising YAXLEY INFANT SCHOOL

Children dressed in spots in November to raise money for Children in Need. All the children came in a variety of dressing up clothes to raise money for this wonderful event. In total we managed to raise £200. Well Done to everyone how took part. Over the December period children still managed to experience the magic of Christmas at school with events happening throughout the festive period. Children had lots of fun on their party clothes with a yummy Christmas lunch with crackers and all the trimmings. They even had a special visitor who had presents to drop off. In the last week of the term children also took part in singing around the Christmas tree outside. Each year group chose a song to sing by themselves and we also sang traditional Christmas songs together as a school. This was a great way to celebrate this special time of the year and bring the school together. On the last day of term school also raised money and

awareness for a charity very close to one of our families. We learnt earlier in the term that a younger sibling of a pupil had been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy. To raise awareness for this illness we wore Christmas Jumpers on the last day of Term for a small donation. We will let you know in the next issue how much money we raised. Finally, our Friends of Yaxley Infant School (PTFA) have been busy over the years raising funds for the school. Our School Councillors asked the children if they could vote on what they would like in the playground. The Children chose a pirate ship which will be installed later in December. Hopefully we will have some photographs to share with you in February. If you are a prospective parent and would like to find out more about our school, please contact the school on 01733 240198 or email office@yaxley.cambs.sch.ukYou can find out more information via our website www.yaxley.cambs. sch.uk We look forward to hearing from you soon. Art and Science LITTLE ACORNS DAY NURSERY AND MONTESSORI SCHOOL The children at Little Acorns had been busy celebrating Christmas and Hanukkah for the whole of December. The children have really enjoyed decorating the nursery, including the Christmas tree, covering it with lots of tinsel and ball balls. The Pre-school children took part in their Christmas concert and even though we were unable to have a live audience, the children still had a great time performing on the stage to each other and their teachers. The children celebrated in their rooms and had their own Christmas parties in which they danced to music and played games. All of the children have loved creating their Christmas art work over the course of December to take home as a gift for their families. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a happy new year, love from Little Acorns Day Nursery. We are taking bookings for September 2022. St Peter's Church Dear Friends Happy New Year – It is 2022 (can you believe it???!) It seems very strange to say that as I am writing this at the start of December, and we have just put our Christmas decorations up at home. Today in church we have had a Nativity service and Blue Christmas service, and there is much more to come. I am surrounded by Christmas cards which need to be written and presents to be wrapped and as you read this, we will be at the other end of Christmas and the start of a New Year. As I write this, news is coming out daily about yet, another variant of Covid and we are all hoping and praying that this will not cause significant illness or upheaval as we all continue to find our new normal. With this in mind, some of what I write, you will need to check on our website or give me a call! We have been looking to open up at St Peter’s for several months, but our building work has been our priority. As I write this, we are hopeful that the church building will be handed back to us from the builders fairly soon – hopefully more news on this next month! With this in mind, we plan in 2022 for our groups to re-open with our wellbeing being on Thursday 27 January at 8pm and our Foster and Adoption group will be announcing dates. Sundays: 10:30am Contemporary Service (1st Sunday – All Age, 2nd and 4th Sundays Holy Communion with children and youth ministry groups and 3rd Sunday – Opening the Bible.) 4.30pm Traditional Service of Holy Communion 5th Sundays – 1 service at 10:00am Foodbank will continue on Monday and Thursday from 3pm to 5pm in the church building. Thank you to everyone who has donated through 2021. Fridays: 1st and 3rd Fridays (9.15am to 11am) – Sparks (Pre-School children and parents/carers) – crafts, activities, songs and refreshments. 2nd and 4th Fridays (9.15am to 11am) – Encounter (Anyone welcome and preschool children welcome) – An informal way to explore the Christian faith with videos, discussion and refreshments. Do join us . With every blessing for a New Year – Rev Sarah

Yaxley Methodist Chapel

One day at a time Here we are at the beginning of 2022 wondering what this New Year will bring. With so many uncertainties in our lives since the Pandemic began, we find it difficult to plan for the immediate future. The words of a song from the past say 'One Day at a time Sweet Jesus' 'help me to take one Day at a time! It isn't an easy thing to do because we feel happy knowing that we have something to look forward to, to prepare for a celebration maybe, or to book a holiday or meet with friends. But one thing we may have learnt over the past 20 months is that not much is certain in our lives. The people living on our streets, particularly during the winter, have no plans for a holiday, celebration or to meet friends. They have no choice but to take one Day at a time and try to survive. One thing is certain in their lives- they are cold and scared. But thanks to the generosity of so many people in Yaxley and Peterborough hot meals and warm clothes are being provided and shelter offered. Our Chapel's Advent appeal was for hats, scarves, gloves, socks etc. And Yaxley residents never fail to show their generosity for those in need. The response was astounding. A car boot full of donations of bought and knitted items winged its way to the Garden House this week for distribution. Thank you so much for answering this Appeal and providing some comfort for those in need. Just knowing that people care about them may give them hope for the future. Hope is a simple word and yet it can mean so much to anyone struggling with the thought of what this New Year may bring. Whatever your situation we wish you Hope and Peace for 2022. Our Sunday services start at 10.30 a.m. You can be assured of a warm welcome if you join us. Winter is upon us and as chilly as it is now, the lowest temperatures are likely yet to come. Even hardy British plants will suffer in particularly miserable weather, so whether your garden is already covered in snow and ice, or simply has a slight frosting, it’s time to make sure that it’s wrapped up warmly.

Call 01832 293755 www.tandeenursery.co.uk Barnwell Road, Thurning, Nr. Oundle, Peterborough PE8 5RH

Wrap u Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to winter damage as their roots are not protected beneath the soil. If the garden soil isn’t frozen solid, plunge any pot that can be plunged. If it’s too heavy to move, then wrap it up well in bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains. Most shrubs and trees in your garden will be hardy in the UK, but if very harsh weather is forecast or there has been a spell of mild weather that may 16

have encouraged the plant to produce some soft, new growth, then drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. A double fleece layer can of course be used on plants in beds and borders too. Weigh down the edges of the fleece well with bricks or use metal pegs at intervals along its length. Larger individual plants in borders can be given good, individual protection if you use four sturdy

up for winter canes to create a framework, wrap it with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Many wall shrubs are grown there because they aren’t the hardiest of plants. To reduce risk of damage, make a similar ‘cage’ of mesh around these and again fill it with dry material so that the plant inside remains snug. Make sure you don’t use materials that can’t breathe or the plants will deteriorate.

Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth. Deep mulch applied to the soil surface on the root area before the ground becomes frosted will help immeasurably. Even hardy fruit trees are prone to damage. Although quite tough, the newly opened blossom and the buds themselves may be damaged, with late frosts being most harmful because the buds are further developed. A fleece cover

will help here too. If you live in a particularly cold area, buy them from a local specialist nursery who know local conditions, and try to buy late-flowering varieties. If your garden is windy, try investing in some fleecy jackets for your favourite shrubs. These are made from fleece and are like massive bags, complete with a drawstring at the open end. Alternatively, use a double layer of ordinary fleece, wrap it

around and cut to size before clipping or tying in place. Outdoor taps and pipework will need protection too or could result in burst pipes and expensive bills. Ideally, turn outside taps off at the mains, but if this isn’t feasible, make sure any exposed pipework is properly insulated. Your local builder’s merchant or DIY store is worth a visit for this job – wellinsulated pipes and garden taps could save you a fortune.

FROM THE FARM By Lisa Leigh Martin

It’s the beginning of the New Year and time for New Year’s resolutions. If you’re like me, you spend several weeks of December thinking of resolutions or goals for the next year; both for your personal life and professional life. We have several New Year’s resolutions for our farm this year. One such resolution, is to further understand how we can utilise the wool taken from our sheep every year at shearing time. We have a small flock that stays on the farm yearround; a number of Zwarbles and some Mule sheep (A lovely mix of Mule and the French breed, Charollais). Understanding the benefits and uses of their wool is priority one for me and my good friend, Paula, who lives down the road. As you may have read, the wool market has been in a free fall (drop!) the past five years. There are many reasons for this, all exacerbated by Covid-19, such as: the growth in demand and production of synthetic fibres, fewer players in the industry supply chain, Brexit uncertainty and the US-China trade war. Many farmers could not afford to transport their wool for sale as the prices fell so low. Some had to burn the wool as

it costs to store. That was not an easy decision to make in the face of so much uncertainty during these times. In an effort to become greener and more environmentally friendly, we would like to turn our attention further and further away from synthetic fibres for our clothing and other such products. Perhaps, in 2022 begin to seek out ways in which you can buy more environmentally friendly clothing and home items using natural products. We hope to be able to bring a few products to market and will keep you posted! Life on the farm in January is quieter; we turn out attention to everything that needs repairing or fixing. We do also pray for some frosts to kill the bugs and any diseases trying to creep up within the crops. We love a bit of sunshine and rain and welcome the colder nights. January is also the time where we start spreading slurry in preparation for the silage or hay that will be

taken later in the year. That is why frost is so useful, because it means the fields will be firmer.

"We have neglected the truth that a good farmer is a craftsman of the highest order, a kind of artist" – Wendell Berry We hope very much you have a wonderful start to your new year, full of fresh ideas and hope for the coming year. There’s plenty of British produce in season to pick from this January such as: Apples, Beetroot, Brussels Sprouts, Carrots, Celeriac, Celery, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Red Cabbage, Salsify, Savoy Cabbage, Spring Greens, Spring Onions, Squash, Swedes, Turnips, and White Cabbage. Happy New Year everyone!

It’s possible to plan some exercise space in even the smallest room. The key is to decide whether you want to increase your strength, reduce your fat, tone your body, or have a combination of all three.

Other equipment that takes up little space includes a skipping rope, dumb-bells or hand weights, a cable stack of weights that can tuck into a corner or a folding bike or rower.

The smallest safe area in which to exercise is about three square metres and this could simply be the corner of a room with a clear, cushioned floor, adequate ceiling height and reasonable lighting. Keep a deflatable Swiss ball, one or two medicine balls, some resistance bands and a heart-rate monitor in a cupboard or drawer.

If you have a big area you could convert though, the sky’s the limit. A cross-trainer, treadmill and rowing machine, an area for weight training or yoga, somewhere to stretch to warm up and down, and perhaps a mini trampoline or a punch bag, with proper flooring and a full-length mirror.

It makes sense to group cardio-vascular type equipment (treadmill, crosstrainer and bike) together, perhaps lined up facing a view or a TV.

Slimming World groups are open and waiting to welcome members both existing and new to groups in the New Year.

The practicalities

Planning for a whole new Slimming World If you are new to a Slimming World group, rest assured that it is a warm and friendly place, with like-minded people, all with a common cause. If you are a returning member, it will be lovely to see you in the group again to pick up where you left off, and embrace your weight loss dreams. Every member receives a copy of our brand new for 2022 member pack; a fresh look at the famous Food Optimising Plan, made even easier to follow to ensure weight loss. Members also have access to a fabulous online support app and website, including a bar code

scanner, planner and recipe hub, all packed with help and inspiration. In recognition of our encouragement to increase activity levels, we now have, for members only, a range of videos to cater for all levels of activity and with specific aims, such as cardio or strength ... whatever your current level, just pick the videos that work for you.

To add to this, we are also able to offer a self-referral 12 week plan with Healthy You. Subject to criteria, you might qualify for 12 weeks free Slimming World membership. If you are interested, just call Healthy You on 0333 005 0093. If you want to know more, please feel free to contact any of the Consultants on the advert above, who will be delighted to hear from you and answer any questions you might have.

Heavy equipment such as barbells and treadmills shouldn’t be installed on an upper floor without advice from a structural engineer. Remember also that running on the treadmill or following an aerobics routine can be noisy, so avoid siting it above or adjacent to a living room or bedroom. If you enjoy your music very loud, you may want to consider some form of additional soundproofing, too. Place any permanent equipment so that you can use it and move around it safely, particularly if two or more of you will be using the area. It makes sense to group cardio-vascular type equipment (treadmill, cross-trainer and bike) together, perhaps lined up facing a view or a TV. You need space at each side to swing your arms and step on and off, with at least a metre run-off behind the

treadmill. If you mirror the back wall, put your strength area here, with dumb-bells, a bench or even a multigym, allowing adequate space to use each item. You’ll need at least one opening window for ventilation, and you may like a fan too, as well as heating for the colder months. The ideal floor would be non-slip and easy to keep clean, perhaps wood laminate with a thick underlay. For floor exercises, the cheapest option is to unroll a mat; alternatively, you could cover the entire floor in 10-15mm thick rubberised gym matting. Lighting should be adequate but not over-bright. Inset ceiling lights are ideal but avoid dangling pendants and jutting wall lights that could be annoying or even dangerous.

Face up to style Visiting your hairdresser with a picture of your favourite celebrity’s latest style is fraught with danger. A good hairdresser should advise if the style will suit you or not, but even before you get to your next appointment, do a bit of homework to find out what styles to avoid. Sit in front of a mirror with your hair pulled back off your face with a band. Then use an old lipstick to draw the outline of your face onto the mirror. Now stand back and decide if your face is predominantly square, oval, heart-shaped, round or long.

Heart-shaped

Square

Avoid a centre parting, any fullness around the ears or a straight fringe as all of these will make your face appear wider.

Long straight hair will draw attention to a square face, as will a straight fringe or a centre parting. A straight bob ending at the jaw line will also emphasise a square jawline.

Oval This is often referred to as the perfect face shape, so don’t detract from it with a heavy fringe or styles that bring your hair forward.

Avoid short, full styles or anything with height, as these styles will make you look topheavy and give the appearance of a longer and narrower chin.

Round

Long If you wear your hair long then your face will look even longer. Avoid centre partings, any style with height and don’t let your hair grow beyond your shoulders.

Happy Old Year from

Stratton Oakford ANTIQUES AND INTERIORS

Stratton Oakford Antiques & Interiors is a vision I've had for many years. It was originally meant to launch in 2020 but the meeting for premises was scheduled for the day lockdown was announced! I then searched for the right location in anticipation of being able to start again. I went for meetings about other premises, until finally finding and opening in our current location on 4 September 2021! I held a small VIP night with 57 of the 70 invitations being accepted. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength with increasing customers visiting on a weekly basis. My entrance into the world of antiques came from a hobby. I loved to visit car boot sales with my grandparents as a child and that progressed into collecting all sorts of oddities. Illness in my early 30s made employment difficult at the time, and this led me to wonder

whether I could make a career from a hobby. I am interested in a broad range of antiques and collectables, including bronze, silver, gold and taxidermy. I currently operate as a father/ daughter team with Chloe my eldest who’s an avid collector and loves movie memorabilia and figurines. She’s only young but learning fast and enjoying exploring new fields in the industry. We try to offer an interesting choice of vintage, antique and collectable items. Located in Whittlesey, just a few miles from Peterborough, the shop stands on the High Street within a one minute walk from a large free car park. Small antiquated rooms that have been given a new use for display cabinets to house vintage items from over 400 house clearances per year, so 95% of our stock on offer is new to the market and not passed from dealer to dealer which I see as a real plus and of a great advantage to our customers. We also offer a small garden courtyard with outdoor items including pots, ornaments, planters and furniture. A recent service we now offer means that you can bring in your gold and silver for a cash sale (with the correct ID) and also now a home valuation service, for larger collections of gold etc., with a Bacs only payment for the safety of the valuer. Thereby carrying zero cash and a professional service. Chris Barnes , Stratton Oakford Antiques

Advice for Tax Payers WHAT TAXPAYERS SHOULD DO WHEN HMRC VISIT UNANNOUNCED

This usually happens when HMRC believes there is unpaid tax but often HMRC systems are out of date and information is delayed. Taxpayers are not legally obliged to let HMRC enter their property under civil law. If you receive an unannounced visit, do not let HMRC enter the house or business premises and ask them to leave the letter, which they must have brought with them, from HMRC’s debt management and banking department (DMB), which will set out the reasons for the visit. Taxpayers receiving such a visit are advised to contact their accountants or ourselves immediately and ask them to liaise with HMRC to resolve the situation on their behalf. If HMRC have already entered the property, the taxpayer is entitled to ask them to leave. There are no legal or financial repercussions from this action, no matter what the HMRC agent says or implies. HMRC staff should NOT take any documents or information without the taxpayer’s consent and must always leave a receipt for any records taken. The advice is that taxpayers should not consent to HMRC entry or to documents or information being removed from the property. If a taxpayer is subject to a dawn raid, (i.e.: action under criminal law), they should seek legal representation from a criminal lawyer immediately, as different procedures and rights will apply.

HMRC TAX AVOIDANCE CAMPAIGN HMRC has launched a campaign aimed at contractors, agency workers and people who work through umbrella companies, to help them determine whether they are involved in tax avoidance and to warn them of the potential consequences, such as IR35 etc. It has also produced an interactive risk checker for anyone who fears they may be in this position.

SELF ASSESSMENT TAX RETURNS For those who have not submitted your 2021 SATR yet, you should do so by the end of this month to avoid late filing penalties that can lead to penalties of £10 per day.

Electric Vehicle Home Charging Grant For many, a new year signals change – and that could mean a new car, saving money and efforts to be kinder to the environment. With an electric car or van, you can achieve all three; made even more affordable by a government grant towards a home charging point at your own home. The electric car market is growing quickly, with over 345,000 pure-electric cars on UK roads at the end of October 2021, and more than 675,000 plugin models including plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Many car owners may be thinking about switching their petrol or diesel model for a more energy-efficient and environment-friendly electric version. With increasing consumer demand, greater availability of vehicles and government support, sales of electric vehicles are growing strongly in parallel to the development of UK charging point infrastructure. Consumers have until the end of March 2022 to apply for a government grant to help them make the change. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) is a grant that provides a 75% contribution to the cost of one charge point and its installation. A grant cap is set at £350 (including VAT) per installation.

The main requirement is that a person owns, leases, or has ordered a qualifying vehicle and has dedicated off-street parking at their property.

a huge growth year for plug-in vehicles in 2020. Coupled with the huge awareness of climate change, the popularity of electric and / or hybrid vehicles is set to continue. Electric vehicles are a crucial step to decarbonising the transport system and reducing air pollution through zero tailpipe emissions. The government recognises that many people will want to charge their electric vehicles at home and the grant is designed to help them do so. The grant works by a customer choosing an EVHS installer to install their chargepoint. The EVHS installer checks that customer qualifies, and then applies on the customer’s behalf. The installer will bill the customer for the price of the installation, less the grant amount they have applied for. If the application is successful, the installer will be paid the grant amount that they have offset from the customer’s bill. The Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) aims to process claims for experienced installers within 30 working days.

You can also apply for two chargepoints at the same property if you have two qualifying vehicles.

Customers cannot apply directly for an EVHS grant. Installers are required to process claims as this ensures that the requirements of the scheme are fulfilled and minimises the risk of incorrectly completed claim forms.

Figures show that 2020 year saw the biggest annual increase in number of registrations, with more than 175,000 electric vehicles registered showing a growth of 66 per cent on 2019. Despite the impact of the pandemic, there was
