There’s nothing more evocative than the humble little snowdrop to herald the coming of spring and all it has to offer. It’s hardly surprising that this tiny plant has held such an important place in prose and verse over the centuries. You can read more about snowdrops on page 21. Yaxley Gazette

Alison McGuinness, President

I ended my December 2020 article with ‘let’s look forward to next year’, we are now in that aforementioned next year and I never thought we would be heading into Lockdown Three. It doesn’t seem 5 minutes since we emerged from Lockdown Two. Things have been quiet on the WI front after our Christmas-themed educational bags were dropped in December which members thoroughly enjoyed; the chocolates have been consumed and the crocus bulbs planted. Now we once again sitting tight and waiting for things to improve. In the meantime, we wish everyone a peaceful New Year. Anyone wishing to contact us please email WIholmevillage@gmail.com

What3Words YAXLEY WI Pauline Brown

H is for Haunted Huntingdonshire, an enthusiastic speaker who had experienced the paranormal and had also produced a most interesting book on the subject.

Here is the first half of our alphabet: A is for Antiques, a most interesting talk by a local auctioneer, together with a quiz on items he had unknown to his wife removed from their home!

I is for tales of an Insurance man. J is an outing to a Japanese Garden a very peaceful place but probably not the sort of thing we want for our back gardens.

B is for what else but Bees and paraphrasing the book Men are from Mars women are from Venus we learned that bees are so unlike wasps we could say that wasps are from Mars and bees from Venus!

K is for Knitting, who can remember when the plight of Romanian orphans was publicised and we all knitted teddies complete with their own carry bag for them, also jumpers are knitted for a school in Kenya on a continual basis.

C is for Clocks and what a great variety of styles and types of clocks Peter Prime brought along followed by a quiz about them.

L is for Lawn Bowls, we had some very good players who enjoyed taking part in the Federation competitions.

New Holme Post Box

D is for Dogs and what clever animals they are, not only being trained as guide dogs but also hearing dogs and helping with everyday tasks.

You will be pleased to learn that the stolen post box in Church St, Holme was replaced by Royal Mail, just in time for Christmas!

E is for the late lamented East of England Show in which we enjoyed partaking as a group and even won on occasion.

M is for a Medieval Dinner we held one year to celebrate our birthday but unfortunately part of the entertainment involved a snake which unfortunately upset one of our members who was terrified of them.

F is for a talk on the Flying Doctor Service of Australia and how thankful we were at the end of it that our doctor is only a short distance away.

Keep safe and keep well ladies and hopefully sooner rather than later we will be able to announce a reopening of our W I.

Like all other clubs we are still unable to meet so I have had a look back on the variety of talks and things that we have taken part in over the years (alphabetically) and hope they bring back some good memories.

I write this as we are just entering Lockdown 3.0 as it seems to be known. I am not sure that any of us would have thought last summer that we would be back to this place again. We have taken the decision at St Peter’s, that we will not be opening the church building for Sunday Services at this time to keep people safe. Our services continue online as well as the weekly mailings that are sent out. It can be hard to wonder what we have achieved over the last weeks and months but on the last Sunday of December we did a look back at 2020 after we looked through some of our social media for the year and realised how many things had gone on. We are so very grateful to the community of Yaxley for your support, especially through the work of the Foodbank. Our amazing volunteers continued throughout last year and will carry on volunteering in this year. The community of Yaxley and our surrounding villages have been so generous in their donations that there were days that we could barely get out of the front door due to the number of donations, so thank you!. We were able to make more Christmas packages than other years and sadly we expect the demand to continue, and probably increase, but Foodbank is still running on Monday and Thursday afternoon from 3pm to 5pm in the church and no vouchers are needed. Like so many individuals and organisations in the village, we do not want to see anyone go hungry due to their circumstances. You may also have been involved in Explorers, (all age activities) which launched in the summer holidays, ran again in October half term and we started again in Advent through to Epiphany. Our Explorers bags were collected by so many people, in fact 170 went during December and I loved seeing so many people out and about on the Nativity Trail. We enjoyed Christingle and singing Away in a Manger on our doorsteps and seeing your photos of your crafts and activities. Explorers will take place in February half term so look out for more information on this during the month and make sure that you join in our Explorers activities. One of the things we are passionate about is prayer and we continue to pray for our community of Yaxley and for an end of this pandemic. If we can pray for anything for you, please let me know. Look after yourselves and stay safe. With every blessing Rev Sarah – yaxleyvicar@gmail.com 01733 248690/07498 230858

YAXLEY METHODIST CHAPEL

Main Street (opposite Keepsakes) Did you leave your decorations up until Twelfth Night, Epiphany, this Year or did you take them down on 2nd February, Candlemass or Middlemass ? In the Middle Ages homes would be decorated with greenery when the Feast of Christmas started on Christmas Eve and continued to Candlemass on 2 February. This was observed as the official end of Christmas in Medieval England. The date was a great feast day and candles intended to be used in Churches during the Year would be blessed on that day and candlelit processions would take place. There is a 17th Century poem written by Robert Harrick (1591-1674) entitled Ceremony on Candlemass Eve which includes the notion that decorations left up after Candlemass Eve would be possessed by Goblins. Is this where the idea about it being unlucky to keep decorations up after Twelfth Night came from ? I have never seen as many houses lit up and beautifully decorated for the benefit of all of us in this Village before. People made a real effort to bring joy to our hearts and smiles to our faces. The decorations will be put away by the time you read this but that Community spirit prevails. I see it in the smiles and greetings as we go on our daily walks; in the selflessness of the volunteers and in the thoughtfulness of friends and neighbours. We still hope that we will be opening the Chapel soon and will be able to share friendship, support and love with old and new friends. Until then we continue to meet on Facebook and YouTube on weekday mornings at 8.30am and Sundays at 10.30am. We would love you to join us. Email: yaxleymc@gmail.com Yaxley Facebook

Covid-19 National Vaccination Programme This is the biggest vaccination programme the NHS has every undertaken. The NHS is well-used to delivering millions of vaccines a year, and is moving quickly to roll out this vaccine to those who need it, but it’s important that we remember this will be a marathon, not a sprint.

How to…

The large increase in cases that hospitals are seeing and the emergence of a new variant of the virus shows that we cannot let our guard down now. NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as continuing to be there for everyone who needs care.

The public have an important part to play to help them do this:

…argue with a conspiracy theorist We all have one relative or friend who believes everything they read on the internet and is convinced that COVID 19 is a hoax and the Government is using the vaccines to implant us with microchips. How do you talk to someone like that? First be kind. It's actually a very human response to look for patterns in events, and to develop and believe in conspiracy theories. We’re primed to be suspicious of things that can’t be easily explained.

Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you When we do contact you, please attend your booked appointment Please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives Visit our website for the most up to date information www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk/

World Cancer Day World Cancer Day every 4 February is the global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). By raising worldwide awareness, improving education and catalysing personal, collective and government action, They are working together to reimagine a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equal for all - no matter who you are or where you live. Visit www.worldcancerday.org/

Be respectful, even if you think the other person is completely bonkers Almost no-one has ever been ridiculed into changing their mind. In the same vein, avoid publicly shaming them. Reach out and speak or message privately. This prevents embarrassment and implies a genuine interest in conversation. Ask 'What would it take for you to change your mind?' If they reply, 'Nothing will ever make me change my mind,' it's probably best to take them at their word and change the subject. Sometimes it’s not worth the effort. Use questions to help others probe their own views. This is often the best way to change someone’s mind. The way to do this is to engage, then gently and politely question, pointing out inconsistencies in their arguments and allowing them to respond, until you hit a dead-end. Research has shown that this tactic prevents people feeling attacked. Always evaluate your relationship with the person. If it's a misguided family member who you love dearly, it's often best to let it go. The relationship is the bigger prize. And even one little conversation might just be enough to get them thinking. By Tom Hancock

Rare Disease Day Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policy makers, public authorities, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases. Limited Company’s and Directors' Loan Accounts Enquiries and checks by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) into the tax position of family and ownermanaged companies often involve a review of loan accounts of the director shareholders (often referred to as ‘directors’ loan accounts’ (DLAs)). • by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

This is particularly the case if DLAs are (or have been) overdrawn during the period under review.

What are they looking for? HMRC recognises that DLAs are a potential source of additional tax under the ‘loans to participators’ rules (CTA 2010, s 455 and following), and possibly also a benefit-in-kind on the director (ITEPA 2003, s 175). HMRC will commonly ask for a detailed analysis of the DLA, showing dates of debits and credits. Aside from the additional tax liabilities mentioned above, a DLA analysis may reveal (for example) failure to notify liability to a section 455 charge, ‘bed and breakfasting’ transactions, or failure by the company to apply PAYE at the correct time to bonuses credited to the DLA. A case highlights the position to keep “proper” records as not all companies produce DLAs in the level of detail that can be requested by HMRC.(Matharu Delivery Service Ltd v Revenue and Customs [2019] UKFTT 553 (TC), HMRC subsequently pointed out in this case that a DLA should be fully itemised and in chronological order.

V&A Legal ltd is authorised by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales to undertake non-contentious probate matters.

T: 01733 306467 E: enquiries@vaprobate.co.uk

HMRC might rewrite a DLA following a tax enquiry or investigation if none are available from the company (e.g. where the director of a closely-controlled company has misappropriated funds). The tribunal in the above case considered that where HMRC are enquiring into the tax affairs of a sole shareholder and their company (e.g. salary and dividends) information about the nature, size and timing of payments between the company and the individual were ‘reasonably required’ by HMRC.

Reminder: May we remind all readers that the filing date for tax returns was 31 January 2021 (as of 6 January 2021) and HMRC have confirmed there is no extension to the filing date or late filing penalties. However, HMRC have confirmed they will consider appeals against late filing penalties if it relates to COVID-19 reasons.

goodfood

Meal on a Budget Starter - Caprese Salad

Caprese Salad

Main Course - King Prawn Spaghetti (you can use a vegetarian alternative)

1. Slice the avocado, mozzarella and tomatoes into thin slices equal in width.

Dessert - Chocolate Mousse Starter

1 avocado 1 mozzarella ball 2 vine tomatoes olive oil fresh basil

Main Course prawns spaghetti garlic courgette chilli (fresh or flakes) parmesan lemon (fresh)

Desert

double cream 150ml 2 eggs 110 grams good quality dark chocolate

2. Plate up in the fanciest way possible and then drizzle a tbsp of olive oil over the top and season with salt. 3. Place a few basil leaves in the centre for extra flavour and prettiness.

King Prawn Spaghetti Defrost the prawns 1. Prep the ingredients by slicing the garlic and grating the courgette. 2. Pop the spaghetti into salted simmering water with the timer two minutes less than the packet time. 3. Add a tbsp of olive oil to a large non-stick saucepan. On a low heat, add the sliced garlic and chilli flakes and gently fry. 4. Stir in the courgette and increase the heat to medium. Season generously with salt to draw out the liquid that you’ll fry off. 5. Add the defrosted prawns and cook for a few minutes. 6. Before draining the pasta, reserve a mug full of pasta water. Transfer the spaghetti into the sauce with the reserved pasta water and stir. 7. Reduce the heat to low whilst you grate in the parmesan and the juice of half a lemon (use the whole if you both like lemon). 8. Plate up whilst twizzling the tongs to create a nice swirl effect. Season with salt, pepper and if you want it hotter add some more chilli flakes.

Chocolate Mousse Dessert 1. Start by whisking the cream until it’s thickened to whipped cream. 2. After this, separate the egg whites from the yolks. Whisk the egg whites until you achieve stiff peaks. 3. Melt the chocolate in the microwave for 30 seconds and then stir and repeat for another 30 seconds. 4. Combine the melted chocolate and cream (reserve a little cream to garnish) first by whisking together and then fold in the egg whites slowly to keep it aerated. 5. Pop in the freezer for half an hour to set, then garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and some chocolate shavings.

pawsforthought Dog walking during Covid You may leave your house to walk your dog:  by yourself  with the people you live with  with your support bubble (if you’re legally permitted to form one)  or, when on your own in a public outdoor space, with one person from another household

This is covered by the exemptions for animal welfare and exercise. Although the government generally advises you should exercise once a day, you can go out more often if you need to walk your dog but should limit this where possible. You should stay two metres apart from anyone outside of your household or support bubble. When walking your dog in areas used by other people, you should consider putting your dog on a lead to ensure you can stay 2 metres away from others. You should wash your hands before and after handling your dog.

“Stay home and plant a garden.” Author unknown

With lockdown in full effect this month, we thought it would be fun to host a ‘Cheese a Day’ challenge throughout the month of February. During the month of February, farmers and the public share social media posts celebrating the everyday dairy in their lives. It gives British farmers an opportunity to showcase dairy and the incredible work and long hours that go into producing dairy products. So, if you are a fan of cheese, you can join Farmer Tom from Village Farm as he tastes different cheeses throughout the month of February! We plan on having a lot of fun and hope it will help you pass the time in a positive way as we await the lowering of lockdown restrictions. You can buy your cheese anywhere to join in as there are hundreds of cheeses produced across

the British Isles. Tom will be posting each day and some days will have special guests via zoom to join in the cheese tasting and Februdairy dialogue. We have partnered with the lovely team at Lincolnshire Poacher in this endeavour. They have put together a fantastic selection of hard/

well, so go on, buy your cheese and join in the discussion! There’s plenty of British produce in season to pick from this Februarysuch as: apples, aubergines, beetroot, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, leeks, mushrooms, onions, parsnips,

Februdairy is a great opportunity not just for farmers, but for consumers and the public to celebrate the valuable tradition of British dairy farming. To post simply use the hashtag #Februdiary and follow the dedicated Twitter account: @februdairy. You can also follow along on the Facebook pages @FarmerTomUK and @villagefarm.org.uk. soft/blue cheeses from producers across the UK and we couldn’t be more excited to try their selection. Tom will be tasting these cheeses as

pears, peppers, potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, rhubarb, swedes, turnips. Thank you for buying local, buying best, and buying British.

Homes for Nature

Winter lockdown is not much fun, so no wonder much of nature hibernates through these cold, dark months. But be cheered that spring is coming and with it once more the florid splendour of early flowering bulbs and the buzz of returning bees.

Now is also the perfect time to install new habitats for nature in our gardens such as solitary bee homes, bird boxes and even bat boxes. All of these products can be either purchased online or if you have excess time on your hands why not consider building your own? Again, a quick internet search will provide a wealth of 'how to do it yourself' information.

and-a-half metres from the ground, whereas a bat box needs to be placed at around five metres in height, with a clear flight path and preferably some shelter, and like solitary bees, a south facing aspect is preferred. Bird boxes ideally need to be between two and four metres off the ground but should be sited between north and east to avoid strong sunlight and our wettest winds.

The real key, however, to adding habitat of this kind is in where you position it, as failure to consider this will mean little or no use for your new homes for nature. Solitary bee homes need to be secured in a south facing position between one and one-

Some good planning and construction work now will ensure your garden welcomes a wealth of wildlife in the year ahead. Nature plays such a key role in brightening our lives in these darkened times.

Spring

Preparing your Garden for

From the longer daylight hours to the sound of morning birds, the signs of spring are all around us. Spring and winter are battling it out but there's plenty to do to prepare your spring garden. Here are some ways to get your garden ready for the better weather

Plants inside the home • Start fertilising house plants as soon as there are more hours of daylight than darkness. • Re-acclimatise plants that have been inside all winter to the outdoors. Ease them outside on warm days and don't leave

20

Outside • Clear out weeds, debris and last year's dead leaves from garden beds and loosen soil. Top Tip - pulling weeds is easier while the ground is wet. • Add compost and natural fertiliser such as odorless horse manure when the soil is dry enough. • Help the compost decompose by turning it with a pitchfork every few weeks. • Remove dead flower heads from bulbs that have finished flowering so their energy is able to focus on new bulb development.

• If trees and shrubs in your garden have broken branches or "suckers" (small young branches), cut them off as close as possible to the main branches, as they zap the strength of the tree. • Use vinegar and lemon juice to remove mold and mildew from garden tools, plastic toys and lawn furniture before putting them outside. Take advantage of your recycling days to properly dispose of old appliances, batteries, paint cans, and other non waste items.

them out overnight until there's no chance of frost. Don't forget to clip dead leaves off to focus nutrients.

• Lift and divide large clumps of herbaceous plants. Remove the old woody stalks and add them to the compost.

• Remove fallen leaves from gutters and around the foundation of the house to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Mulch and compost your leaves and place them around acidloving plants and trees.

• Clean off leaves with a mild detergent and warm water. Don't scrub or pull on leaves.

• Keep an eye out for aphids that like that new spring growth. Use botanical pesticide as a last resort to insect attacks.

Now all we need to do is sit back, wait for the warmer days to arrive and we can crack open the BBQ!

Tiny white symbols of As snow has already fallen in many places this year, tiny, delicate, white nodding bells of snowdrops are becoming increasingly visible, peeping up through frosted earth. This welcome emergence of blankets of snowdrops is one of the joys of winter and a reminder of the cycle of life, harbingers of lighter, longer, warmer days ahead – and never more so than this year. The pure white delight of snowdrops, Galanthus nivalis (milk flower of the snow) is derived from two Greek words, Galantus meaning ‘milk’ and ‘flower’ referring to the white petals and nivalis from the Latin word for ‘snow’. Carl Linnaeus, the renowned Swedish botanist, bestowed them with this name in 1753. Only first recorded in the 18th century, the arrival of the first bulbs in the country remains unknown, some historical evidence shows that they were cultivated back in 1597, yet surprisingly the species were not officially recorded for another 180 years. In origin the snowdrop is actually native to Europe and the Middle East, and was probably brought to Britain by the Romans, it is a small genus of about 20 species of plants in the Amaryllidaceae or Amaryllis family. In France they are more commonly known as pierce-neige, which translates as snow piercers,

an accurate description of their growing habit. Their pointed leaves have specially hardened tips to help them break through frozen soil and their sap contains a form of antifreeze to prevent ice crystals forming. On very cold mornings, clumps will flop down as the water is 'frozen’ inside the cells, but will soon perk up again as temperatures rise and the sap can flow again. Snowdrops also contain an alkaloid, galanthamine, a substance also found in daffodils, now licensed for use in the management of mild and moderate cases of Alzheimer’s disease in various countries, especially Eastern Europe and Russia. Once they have flowered, snowdrop stems droop down and the seed pods develop on the surface of the soil. Each seed has a small oil and protein-rich appendage called an elastiome, and when the seed pods open they attract ants, which take them down into their nests as food for

developing larvae. The seeds themselves remain untouched and, thanks to the ants, are both dispersed to new locations and conveniently planted underground. Most snowdrops found in the wild in Britain spread from vegetative division of the bulbs rather than by seed because they originally come from a cultivated sterile clone that is unable to set seed. Even when other fertile species and varieties are around though, seed production tends to be poor as there are few pollinating insects around in January and February to fertilise the flowers. Their intricate little flowers have the tiniest variation in form, shape and colour celebrated in a myriad of named forms and hybrids - there are currently 20 different species of snowdrop recognised in the wild, the most recent addition to the list being Panjutin's snowdrop, Galanthus panjutinii, only formally recorded in 2012.

younggazette Holme Church of England Primary Academy

Stepping into 2021 Mrs Thomas (Head of School)

We are a small village school just outside of Yaxley. We are organised into four classes and currently we operate in two bubbles. As we step into 2021 we welcome seven new children and their families to our school community. Despite most of our children working from home, we continue to strive to deliver a full education to all of our pupils. The first week back in January we focused on physical activity and mindfulness exercises. The mental health of adults and children is a priority for us at Holme and we teach children strategies for coping with worries and relaxing.

GIRLGUIDING Recruitment of Members Firstly, thank you to those who asked us to collect their Christmas tree back in January. At the time of writing, we’re only a couple of days after the event so still adding up the donations, but we have totalled over £500 already. Thank you to everyone who has donated. We would really like to thank John Griffin of John Griffin Tree Surgery in the village, without whom this whole event would not have been possible. Secondly, are you looking for a new opportunity to help your local community in 2021? Do you have an interest in Scouting and Guiding (or even fond memories of being a Scout or Guide) but don’t have the time to help at weekly meetings? We’re looking for new volunteers to join the Yaxley Scout & Guide Committee. We work to jointly manage the Scout & Guide HQ, including the fundraising efforts required each year. We’re especially keen to hear from those who have plentiful experience in the following areas:

• Bid Writing • Legal • Strategic Development As we continue to move forward, adapting to the current situation, we would love to have new members come on board and help us with moving forward in 2021, especially as we try and raise extra funds to prepare for building an extension to the hall. We welcome anyone who has an interest in supporting the young members of our community who are involved in Scouting and Guiding and require nothing more than a can-do attitude and a willingness to get stuck in. Meetings are on the first Thursday of the month and there are a handful of other occasions per year (Yaxley Fireworks, Yaxley Vintage Festival etc) where extra help would be appreciated. If you are interested, or to find out more please email Beth: yaxleyscoutsandguides@gmail.com.

Our fantastic staff are working extremely hard to deliver live teaching sessions to the children working at home. The children are coping brilliantly with this new way of learning and are becoming quite skilled at video calls

and uploading work! Some of our pupils are receiving additional teaching sessions to make sure they don’t fall behind. The children are especially enjoying the end of day story times. The parents have been incredibly complimentary of our remote learning offer. We have around 20% of our children working in school. These pupils are well supported by their class teacher and those in Key Stage 2 have access to their own Chromebook. In January, we had new playground markings as well as new break time equipment. This has been very exciting and the children have enjoyed utilising these. Around school we have been busy enhancing the learning environment using our artistic skills.

We have limited places across the school, Please call the school office for details. School office : 01487 830342 www.holme.cambs.sch.uk

World Book Day By Sarah Davey

Thursday 4 March is WORLD BOOK DAY and this year the focus is on libraries. Every Saturday morning after we’d endured the weekly shop my mother took me and my brother to the library. We’d flop down in the children’s section and skim the titles, our heads tilted at ninety degrees. Our card limit was three books each and it never seemed enough. My mother was an avid reader and instilled in both of us the love of a good story. It’s why I’m delighted that World Book Day is here again, and that it's working even more closely with libraries. For the first time in our lives libraries are seriously under threat. Yet libraries level the playing field for families who can't afford to buy books. They are gateways to a world of information and imagination.

Are more flexible thinkers and are more open to new ideas

World Book Day is the annual event supporting books and reading in the UK. Schools, libraries and bookshops will be holding book related events, activities and parties. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to get involved.

Share a few of your childhood favourites with your own children. If your memory needs a jog here are a few to start you off…

The aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of reading. Your child will be given a book token which can be exchanged for one of ten specially published World Book Day books. The theme this year is story-sharing.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

Research has proven that keen readers: Read, write and concentrate better

Deal with personal problems better without their schoolwork being affected. They are also well equipped to deal with the explosion of constantly changing information available through the internet and social media. TV and computer games take up so much of our children’s leisure time that the simple pleasure of reading can be overlooked. Yet reading is the only entertainment medium which is also a life skill and it’s one of the best gifts you can give to your child. So let’s all support World Book Day and...celebrate the power of a story.

Positive attitude towards learning prevails This new calendar year hasn’t exactly started the way we all would have liked with welcoming back our wonderful children and families however, we haven’t let the National Lockdown dampen spirits and our positive attitudes towards learning at Yaxley Infant School. We have welcomed back into school the children of critical workers and vulnerable children who have walked back in with fabulous smiles and a great attitude to their school learning. As the majority of our children are currently learning from home we have been mirroring our school learning with lesson videos

and activities to join in at home. We have had a really positive response from our supportive families in joining in with home learning and want to thank everyone who has supported us and worked so hard in these challenging times.

do so with the local and national guidance. Until then we are keeping positive and making sure all our children both at home and at school are still able to access the high standard of Early Years and Key Stage One learning they are used to.

We hope to welcome all our children and families back as soon as safe to

The school also has a new website www.yaxley.cambs.sch.uk which

has been used alongside Tapestry to support home learning for our families during remote learning both when we have had to close bubbles and also during this Lockdown. The site includes all the information parents will need so we encourage you to visit our new site if you are a current or prospective parent.

Usually at this time of year we would be advertising school tours to prospective parents. Sadly, this year we are unable to do this. If you have a child due to start school in September 2021, we would like to hear from you. Check out www.yaxley.cambs.sch.uk, give us a call on (01733) 240918 or email the school on office@yaxley.cambs.sch.uk to find out more about us. re ca rs ild che ed Ch ou ept v cc a

Tips for Home Schooling Home schooling is at the front of most parents minds at the moment. Whether you’re working from home, furloughed or still going out to work. The idea of home schooling is pretty daunting. So, here’s our top tips on how to get the most out of your child’s home learning experience. 1. Organisation: It might seem pretty obvious, but the first thing you should think about is drawing up a timetable, making sure your child’s day is varied. Secondly, you want to make sure that they have a quiet and dedicated space for learning and that they have everything they need, e.g. pens, paper, calculator, protractor.

4. Allow for breaks. Remember 20/20/20, for every 20 minutes of working on a screen, you should turn and look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. Also, a short 5-10 minute break between each subject can help with focus.

2. Keep it relaxed and fun, allow some freedom of choice. We all learn better when we enjoy what we do.

5. Making learning relevant to everyday tasks and life skills. This can be anything from working out/weighing out how much of an ingredient is needed for a recipe or calculating change from a supermarket shop.

3. Children can achieve a lot in a short period of time. 15 minutes of concentrated effort, is better than one hour of stress and struggle. Do not confuse quantity with quality.

6. Call in the 'experts': There are numerous resources out there, whether it’s BBC Bitesize, online forums, or friends and family. If you don’t know the answer to something, find someone who does.

Here at Kip McGrath we employ tutors who are qualified and experienced teachers and can help support your child’s home learning during these tough times. Visit kipmcgrath.co.uk/Peterborough-south for more details.

During the run up to Christmas 2020, the children at William de Yaxley CE Academy were involved in creating a Reverse Advent Calendar for the local community. The objective being that, rather than receiving a gift from their own advent calendar, they be the gift givers to others.

William de Yaxley CE Academy

Reverse Advent Calendar Children were asked to bring in spare food donations from home, such as: mince pies, tinned fruit and vegetables, stuffing mix and other dried or packaged goods to send to others less fortunate than themselves. The aim the children wanted to achieve was to help the person who received their donations feel like they were being cared and thought about. Looking at the amount of donations received, the children clearly achieved their aim! Thanks to the pupils at William de Yaxley CE Academy many boxes full of Christmas treats were created and sent accordingly.

What does community mean? Let’s be honest, life at the moment is difficult for everyone, it has changed beyond recognition and we find ourselves withdrawing once again from society. Even during these troubled and confusing times, I could not feel prouder of our community and just how, together, we have faced these challenges and turned them into something positive. Over the Christmas period our preschool supported CARESCO in Sawtry with donations for the food bank. Our children and families collected nearly 100 items for others in need, showing what the true message of community means. Our Christmas tree (which was located outside the village hall) was purchased from a group raising money for Sue Ryder. As a charity, we understand how hard it is to raise money and we wanted to be able to help another charity by bringing Christmas cheer to Folksworth.

This term, we opened our doors to the children in our neighbouring community who needed a preschool placement at very short notice. We have also donated our old printer to a homeschooling family. When we pull together we can lighten the burden others face and make life that little bit easier for someone who is struggling. To this end, we would like to give special thanks to Nisa Stilton, our local community shop, on their ongoing support to Folksworth Preschool and the wider community because together,

when we work as one, we can do great things and make a change for good, and we can bring out a ray of light in the darkest moments facing some of those in our community. By showing our children what community spirit means and the different ways in which we can help each other, we will ensure that our community thrives for future generations to come. By Niki Wilson

FITNESS There is now clear evidence that CBD can provide health benefits and aids in improving fitness and recovery. So, many well known faces actively promote their use of CBD for this reason.

INFLAMMATION There is research to suggest that CBD reduces inflammation by affecting activity in the body’s endocannabinoid receptors.

Give romance scammers the elbow as Valentine season approaches The restrictions and Stay At Home message continue to force many people to feel more isolated, turning to dating apps to find love or companionship. It’s no suprise that user interaction on dating apps has soared over the past 10 months, and with February the season of love and romance – it is also a key date for fraudsters to step up their scams. Last year, UK victims of online romance fraud were conned out of more than an estimated £63 million by love rats posing as potential partners by using a fake profile and building what feels like a loving relationship. These people are experts at grooming their victims and their end-game is always about how much money they can extract. Some seven million UK residents are believed to be registered on dating sites, with Tinder taking the lion’s share of the market when it comes to online dating apps. At the end of March 2020, Tinder reported a record 3 billion “swipes” in a single day. There are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe: D - Don't rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions and it is paramount that you meet virtually in person via video chat to ensure those you are connecting with are genuine. A - Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term 'dating scam'. T - Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. Romance fraud involves grooming over a long period of time. Alienating a victim from their friends and family can make up part of that process. E - Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you've only met online. S - Stay on the dating site messenger service. Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable e.g., email or WhatsApp. Remember, don’t let your heart rule your head and, if you have not met in person or via a video chat, never:  Send any money  Purchase and send the codes on gift cards  Transfer money on their behalf  Take a loan out for them  Allow them access to your bank account  Invest your own money on their behalf or on their advice  Provide copies of your personal documents such as passports or driving licences  "Hold" money on their behalf (which is typically stolen) If you think you are a victim of romance fraud, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. For more information on this and other types of fraud, visit www.actionfraud.police.uk
