February is the month that gives a sure sign that spring is on its way with the re-emergence of snowdrops from their period of dormancy. And, of course, it is the month of love. I have the snowdrops sorted, but not Valentine's Day!

HOLME WI

Alison McGuinness, President We have been so lucky to be able to hold our monthly meetings since June last year, we are now on a short break, recovering from the Christmas festivities and start again in February. Therefore our news at the moment is quiet, the ladies are busy knitting and our new programme is being prepared for the upcoming new year. In the meantime, Holme WI wishes everyone a peaceful and healthy New Year! Alison McGuinness, President

YAXLEY BROADWAY BOWLS CLUB

In the beginning ... It all began back in 1938, with the rebuilding of a brand ‘new’ pub on Broadway (Hatchet and Bill), and as part of this, a bowls green (with pavilion) was laid for the use of the customers. Unfortunately, Sept 1939 followed quickly after, and for obvious reasons the green fell into a state of disrepair. Grass standing over two feet high, herds of cattle on route between the railway station and the CoOp Farm trampling the green would not have improved the area.

In 1950, and with the proviso (asked for by the brewery) that the green would remain open to the pub’s customers, the Yaxley Broadway Bowls Club was born. William Cook (Chairman), Joseph Speechley (President) and a section of the local community, including a doctor, police sergeant, farm manager, bus driver, railway and brickwork employees, the vicar of

St Peters, and not forgetting the first Club Captain, Jim Blake, whose resume included working as a Private Investigator. In all, 29 members (photo included), began what continues to this day to be a Club at the heart of village life. Next time, we’ll fast forward to 2022, and chat to our youngest member, his name is Charlie, he’s 10 years old, and usually has plenty to say!

Although some work was undertaken immediately after the war, it was 1948 when the Huntingdon Brewery took control and decided to ‘sort out’ the green. Clinker from the brick kilns was laid to provide drainage and the original topsoil re-used to cover the ‘new’ layer. To allow the green to settle, it was consequently left to stand throughout 1949. Support your local library Lakeside Healthcare at Yaxley is excited to announce that we have launched our new online consultation platform, Doctrin. This has replaced our existing Engage Consult service.

being able to manage cases for your children.

An important difference to our previous service is that patients will need to have an NHS log in to use Doctrin, so the practice team is urging patients to sign up as soon as possible (www.nhsapp.service. nhs.uk/login) – this is the same login as used for the NHS App.

GP Partner and Lakeside Healthcare at Yaxley’s NonExecutive Director, Dr Stephanie Betts-Masters said:

Doctrin is an innovative online GP consultation platform which allows you to easily access the most appropriate member of our healthcare team to help you with your problem. You will be able to access Doctrin via our website (www.yaxleygp. nhs.uk) or using the NHS app. You will then be asked a series of online questions that will be tailored to your particular medical problem or query. Benefits include a personalised ‘data dashboard’ about your previous and ongoing cases, as well as

‘Our patients at Yaxley already make good use of our existing online platform and we are hoping to build on this and improve their experience by introducing Doctrin. We feel that Doctrin will give a number of key advantages to our patients and allow us to continue to provide excellent access despite challenging times across the NHS. Doctrin has received very positive feedback after being introduced at three of our sister Lakeside practices. We are encouraging all of our patients to register for their NHS log in as they will need this in order to access Doctrin. Ideally, you would do this before you have a healthcare need as it may take several days for the registration to be validated.'

YAXLEY PARISH COUNCIL

Getting our skates on ... Helen Taylor, Parish Clerk, Yaxley Parish Council

Cemetery Following a safety inspection notices have been attached to the few headstones that have been identified as at risk. Where we have up to date information we have contacted the families to make them aware, but as most are over 30 years old and we do not have up to date information we ask families to contact their undertakers where necessary to make the headstone safe. If very unstable or we are unable to find next of kin, we will make the headstone safe which may include laying the memorial down with the inscription facing upwards. We will be coming to the grass gutting season very soon and would remind people to keep the grass around sanctums clear any flowers etc. can be placed on the gravel behind the sanctums.

Fly Tipping If someone with a van offers great rubbish removal rates please be wary, check they are

a licensed operator, as we have had a spate of fly tipping in Yaxley. The District Council are taking action but often it’s against the resident believing the rubbish will be correctly dumped.

For more information or to report an empty grit bin or to volunteer to help please visit www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk

Hunts DC will remove bulky items for a fee please call on 01480 388 640 or check out their website for full details and charges: www.huntsdc.gov.uk/bins-waste/bulkywaste-collection/

We are delighted to report that the skate park improvements and skate park extension has been completed. The old skate ramps at Middletons Road Recreation Ground have had new frames and skatelite surfacing and four additional jump ramps have been installed offering more fun for the junior skater to develop skill and confidence. The overall costs have been approx. £47,000 met from the earmarked and general reserves. We intend to paint the sides black when the weather allows so that the local graffiti artists can have somewhere to practise their art, but we would ask that the skatelite surface remain as it is, as any paint or spray will damage the surface and no one wants that. We thank everyone for their patience – happy skateboarding

Gritting Between 1 November and 15 April, Cambridgeshire County Council has a fleet of gritters on standby. Regular updates can be found on facebook and twitter on when the roads will get gritted and any weather warnings. Only the bus route roads in Yaxley are gritting routes for County but there are a number of yellow grit bins dotted around the village and County have a list of volunteers who help treat the footpaths in these areas when the temperature drops below freezing.

ST PETER'S CHURCH

Upgrading and Modernising Facilities At various times during the pandemic, we at St. Peter’s Church, Yaxley have had to close our doors; stopping services, groups and events, in order to keep our community safe. Despite these closures we have continued to work on preparing for the future of our church, and for our community, in many ways.

St. Peter’s Church is a warm, welcoming and lively faith community who aim to be accessible and supportive to all. It is our hope that these facilities will enable us to continue to expand our role in the local community and provide a welcome for those moving into the area as the development of Greater Haddon takes place.

We are currently nearing completion on a major project to upgrade and modernise our facilities in church. We now have a new servery, which we look forward to using to serve refreshments at services, groups, meetings and events in the near future. We also have an additional upper room which will be used for the young people in our community and for meetings and small groups. It’s also exciting to announce that we now have three toilets (one with disabled access), hopefully putting an end to those long queues at big services and events!

We give thanks to all those in our community who have helped us raise funds, through donations, applying for grants, the organising of fundraising events and to all those who attended fundraising events. The Partridge Legacy fund also contributed towards the project, for which we are very grateful. We give particular thanks to the organisations who have supported us with grants, discounts or loans. Without the generosity of the following organisations this project would not have been possible.

Allchurches Trust Amey Community Fund The Augean Community Fund Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust Fenland Stoneworks Garfield Weston Foundation Hobart UK RB Organics All of this support has enabled the work to be carried out in a way that complements our beautiful Grade 1 listed church by John Lucas (Peterborough) Ltd and their subcontractors. On behalf of the church, and the local community, we thank everyone involved. Once the project is formally completed, we will be holding a service to dedicate the new facilities; we do hope you will be able to join us to celebrate and to take a look around. We look forward to welcoming you soon.

Light Fantastic Lighting can be used to emphasise good points or disguise problem areas, to highlight colour, texture and form, and to divide, unify or open up a space. In short, lighting can make or break a room. Poor lighting flattens and dulls, while clever lighting can jazz up the simplest of decorative schemes. Lighting isn’t just a practical thing, it’s psychological, too, reinforcing our sense of security, comforting us, and sending out signals of welcome, vitality and warmth.

require three or four of these types, provided by a combination of downlights or spotlights on the ceiling, track lights, floor-level or wall-mounted uplighters, wall washers, floor or table lamps, and special shelf or display lighting.

If possible, you should design your lighting scheme when planning how you will use the room and where the furniture will be grouped.

Of course, we can’t all start from scratch when redesigning our lighting, so if you’re looking for a quick upgrade on a budget, you could just spend a few pounds replacing main light switches with dimmers and plug in a selection of table or floor lamps at strategic points.

Professionals divide light into four main types: general light, which gives good overall lighting; task light, to brightly illuminate a specific area such as a worktop or reading corner; accent lighting, which highlights features such as pictures, shelving or architectural detailing; and atmosphere lighting, which sets the mood, from a dramatic mix of light and shade to mellow pools of light in different areas of the room. Most rooms

With these fundamentals in mind, forward planning and creative thinking are the keys to designing a lighting scheme. Think of it as painting with light, creating washes and filling in with highlights and lowlights. Each room is your blank canvas, but with imagination and a little effort it can become a work of art.

Lighting, room by room Living rooms Ideally, install a range of lighting options, from bright reading lights to softer lights for relaxing and entertaining. You could also highlight shelving, pictures or a coffee table. Dining rooms A pendant hung over a dining table creates an intimate atmosphere. Fix wall lights at a lower level – more appropriate when sitting. Kitchens Adjustable spotlights are practical for general light, with lights mounted beneath wall cabinets to illuminate worksurfaces. Bathrooms Combine crisp, bright lights, in the form of ceiling downlighters, for an energetic feeling, with softer lights, such as wall washers, for a relaxing bath. Bedrooms require subtle, flattering lighting, although a good light for mirrors is essential. Wallmounted lights free up space on a bedside table.

RECIPES Chicken Goulash Here’s a delicious winter warming midweek supper that can be rustled up in less than 40 minutes. We’ve used chicken fillets but you can use cheaper boneless chicken thighs or try strips of lean sirloin steak or pork fillet instead. Serves 4 | Ready in 35 minutes

 Mix together the paprika and flour and stir into the pan. Cook for 1 minute then gradually stir in the passata and stock. Season with salt and pepper.  Bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer and cook for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened and the chicken is cooked through. Serve topped with soured cream and boiled potatoes. Sprinkle over the chopped parsley to garnish.

TIP

 Heat the oil in a large deep frying pan. Add the chicken and onion and fry over a medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally until both are lightly browned. Add the mushrooms and fry for a further 2 minutes.

Passata is simply ripe tomatoes that have been pureed then sieved to remove any skin and pips. You’ll find it in jars near the canned tomatoes in the supermarket. You can use a small can of chopped tomatoes instead – just whizz in a food processor or with a hand blender until smooth.

TIP

2 tbsp sunflower oil 600g skinless chicken fillets, thinly sliced 1 red onion, peeled and chopped 200g button mushrooms, wiped 1 tsp smoked paprika 2 tsp plain flour 150ml passata (see tip) 150ml chicken stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tbsp soured cream Boiled potatoes, to serve Fresh chopped parsley, to garnish

For thick steaks and medium doneness, grill over high heat 6 minutes on first side, 4 minutes on second side, or broil 3 inches from heat source, 8 minutes first side and 6 minutes on second. Steaks and shrimp can also be cooked stove-top in a heavy skillet with a coating of olive oil.

Surf and Turf for Two This is a simple way to make a special dinner any night of the week. You probably have most of the ingredients in your pantry already. Serve shrimp alongside steaks with your favourite sides. Serves 2 | Ready in 20 minutes 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1 tablespoon finely minced onion 1 tablespoon white wine 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon dried parsley 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning 1 clove garlic, minced 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 12 medium shrimp, peeled and deveined 2 (4 ounce) filet mignon steaks (or cheaper cuts!) 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 teaspoon steak seasoning or good old fashioned salt and pepper  Whisk 1 tablespoon olive oil, butter, onion, wine, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, parsley, seafood seasoning, garlic, and black pepper together in a bowl; add shrimp. Toss to coat evenly. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for flavours to blend, at least 15 minutes.  Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat and lightly oil the grate. Coat steaks with 2 teaspoons olive oil; sprinkle with steak seasoning.  Cook steaks until they are beginning to firm and have reached your desired doneness, 5 to 7 minutes per side. An instant-read thermometer inserted into the centre should read 140 degrees F (60 degrees C). Transfer steaks to a platter and loosely tent with a piece of aluminium foil.  Remove shrimp from marinade and grill until they are bright pink on the outside and the meat is no longer transparent in the centre, 2 to 3 minutes per side.

Bulb Planting WILLIAM DE YAXLEY

At William de Yaxley we have been lucky enough to be donated a huge amount of spring flowering bulbs from Notcutts Garden Centre, Orton. These were duly delivered, along with an enormous “dibber” to help the children plant the bulbs successfully. Our Site Manager, Mr Ingham consulted with the children about where best to plant the bulbs, and with their help has begun the job of doing so. We are always looking for ways to encourage our children to be active and to get outdoors, and what better way than this! Mr Ingham is our resident “Gardening

expert” and comes with a great deal of experience in this area – he loves sharing his knowledge and skills with the children, and they adore spending time with him also. He has rounded up some additional adult help to ensure the bulbs are planted in a timely manner, so we can experience and enjoy their flowers throughout the late spring and early summer – do keep a lookout at the front of the school. We are all excited to see the outcome, later in the spring where we are sure our grounds, both front and back will become alive with splashes of colour and beautiful flowers accordingly!

Reading Pirates YAXLEY INFANT SCHOOL

Nativity LITTLE ACORNS DAY NURSERY AND MONTESSORI SCHOOL Little Acorns wishes you all a happy and healthy new year! Before Christmas the Pre-school children carried out their Christmas nativity. We were so happy we were able to put on a performance this year. The children practised so hard over the course a few months and put on a great performance. Since then the children have returned back from their Christmas break and have been settling back into nursery. The children have been learning about New Year and creating amazing pieces of art work with the New Year 14

as inspiration. Lots of our children have showed an interest in the cold weather, the arctic and the animals that live there. From this we followed the children’s interests and made this a learning topic through the month of January. The children were able to explore and learn many different areas of this topic and were able to build on their knowledge. We are now taking bookings for September 2022; Please email or call the nursery for any enquiries using enquiries@littleacornsdaynursery.co.uk or 01733 244 000

Last month we mentioned that our Friends of Yaxley Infant School (PTFA) have been busy over the years raising funds for the school. Our School Councillors asked the children if they could vote on what they would like in the playground. The Children chose a pirate ship which has now been installed. This is another wonderful addition to our outdoor resources which include: our outdoor classroom, trim trail and bikes and scooters which the children use on a daily basis.

for Pleasure initiative in which they are encouraging schools to review and adapt their reading approaches so that children are motivated and inspired by reading. As part of our professional day in January we discussed ways in which we could improve our reading practice and to formulate a Vision for Reading at Yaxley Infant School. In the next issue we hope to share with you more information on how we have adapted and improved our approaches and their impact on our young learners.

At Yaxley Infant School we recognise the importance of reading and its central role in lifelong learning. We have reading bookmarks where the children are able to earn stickers and are given tokens for our Yaxley Infant School Rainbow Bookshop. Previously, this has been proved to be very successful with parents playing a part in supporting their children at home with their reading.

With our new pirate ship and improving on Reading, we might even spot some Reading Pirates at breaktime and lunchtime.

The government have also recently launched their Reading

OPAL Programme FOURFIELDS CP SCHOOL

At Fourfields, we are excited to be embarking on an amazing project to revamp our children’s lunchtime play experience. We know that our children have access to a great curriculum and that our learning is creative, innovative and fun! We believe that children deserve playtimes that are of the same high quality! So, we’ve been busy doing our research and are excited to have signed up to the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme. Our vision is that every child at Fourfields has an amazing hour of high quality play every day – with no exceptions. This project will focus on developing our outdoor play provision, fulfilling our belief that children should learn to take risks and be allowed to play freely in a way that fosters creativity and imagination. A significant part of this programme involves children being given the opportunity to explore a wide range of loose parts, which they then use to enhance their play.

Since September, we are extremely grateful to have already been supported by local businesses Yaxley Carpets. Produce World and Howdens who have responded generously to our requests for donations, recognising the benefits of the project for all our children (and adults too!) We thank you so much for your help and look forward to sharing many a picture of the children enjoying all that playtime has to offer! We would be incredibly grateful for any donations of items our children can use in their play, which will help develop their imagination, team work, language, confidence, contributing to their overall wellbeing. We would be happy to collect the donations from your premises if that is convenient. Please call 01733 703611 or email me at LHewerdine@ fourfields.cambs.sch.uk

Art and Design FARCET C. OF E. PRIMARY SCHOOL Art and design is one of the most popular subjects here at Farcet. Through our curriculum, children develop knowledge not only of artists, designers, architects and their work, but of the artistic concepts that relate to their work shown in different types and styles of art, how these relate to each other in a historical context and how this affects the children’s own use of materials and development of skills. Meaningful opportunities for self-expression and individual response are woven

through the curriculum, giving children space to learn who they are as an artist. Recently, years 5 and 6 studied Islamic art during their art and design lessons. They carefully observed the geometric designs in a range of artwork and created their own. The final pieces in the project were painted clay tiles which we all agree are stunning and show the hard work and effort the children put into their learning.

Winter Wonders

The winter months can be a little lacklustre in the garden. However carefully you plant your flowerbeds and borders, the number of brightly coloured plants for winter performance is rather limited. But one of the most important ingredients in a winter garden is perfume – it’s certainly something which can transform my mood in an instant. So think scent, as there are a few really brilliant winter perfume plants, and there’s a good chance that they’ll be readily available in garden centres and nurseries right now. The witch hazels or Hamamelis are favourite winter flowerers. With their unusual orientallooking yellow, orange or bronzy-red spidery flowers on bare branches they look stunning. But of course looks are not everything and the perfume of the witch hazels is what really makes them such an asset – sweet, spicy and wonderfully good at wafting around the garden. Various colours are available, in shades of brightest orange through to rich burgundy. Wintersweet or Chimonanthus is another recommendation. The branches are covered with creamy to yellow-coloured multi-petalled flowers with a seriously sweet perfume. Like the witch hazel it’s quite slow growing and doesn’t need a huge amount of space. This means it’s a perfect choice for the smaller garden, but make sure you consider carefully where to plant it, so that you can enjoy every aspect of its display. If you like a bit of variegated foliage then try the Daphne odora ‘Aureo-marginata’, which has classic purple-pink clusters of

16

flowers, a very strong perfume and leaves that are typically green and leathery but with a bright yellow leaf margin. It can be a little temperamental, but after its first year a Daphne generally settles in well and you won’t regret buying it. The Viburnums may be a shrub you think of as a summer-flowering plant, but varieties such as Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’ not only look good but also provide your garden with a sumptuous perfume. Planted in a sheltered spot, it won’t let you down. Mahonias can be a trifle spiky with their hollylike leaves, but when they are in flower their brightest yellow spikes are really eye-catching and Mahonia japonica produces one of the sweetest perfumes you could wish for, from the middle of winter to early spring. If you prefer one with more upright flowers, go for Mahonia x media ‘Charity’. Mahonias are good in part shade or full sun. Winter-flowering honeysuckles are not as showy as their summer-flowering relations,

but definitely still lovely. The bare stems are covered with small white-cream flowers, which produce a tremendously sweet, spicy aroma both night and day. And finally, don’t forget the Sarcococcas or winter box. With their small, pretty but inconspicuous flowers they may not instantly leap out and draw attention to themselves, but the perfume of those tiny flowers is tremendous and really strong, making them a great winter-flowering shrub that is highly recommended by gardeners in the know.

By Lisa Leigh Martin

A Blast of Opportunities February is a cold, bitter, but mercifully short month. Last year mid-February temperatures dropped to -8°C (about 17°F) but with that came clear days and sunshine which goes some way to excusing the cold and lifting spirits. This arctic blast provides opportunity on our farm. With thick layers of heavy clay beneath our thin soils, our land holds water and becomes impassable during the winter months by vehicle. In trying to protect our soils we respectfully keep off during these weeks when the passage of a tractor would cause compaction, reducing the capacity to store water, increase flooding, and with the floodwaters a loss of nutrients. These freezing cold mornings, however, offer a reprieve. During a heavy frost, the tractor dances across the soil barely leaving a mark, and so we use this time to circle the outside of fields trimming hedges. Now you, dear reader, can cut your garden hedge 365 days a year, but farmers (with certain exceptions for road safety etc) are restricted to the months of September to March so we protect our nesting birds. Frankly, I think that what goes for farmers should

apply to householders as well in this case, but that’s another discussion. September hedgerows are typically laden with fruits of hawthorn, blackthorn, bramble, and more and so where possible we delay cutting hedges until later in the winter. The risk is a warm, wet winter such as 2019-20 when the land is impassable during late winter, but last year we were able to get on and cut hedges after the birds and wild creatures had eaten their fill, and the hedgerow larder was empty. Last year, in fact, in February, we were able to plant some very late winter-sown beans, and that was a pleasure, although the 4am start with 8 degrees of frost, 4 inches of snow, and rasping, northerly winds was a shock. In February this year we’ll be laying hedges as well; the traditional craft of cutting hedges at the base

(though not completely), allowing them to be leant over and braided between upright posts resulting in a thicker, healthier hedge with fresh growth and vigour providing more protection from the elements, better habitat for wildlife, and stock-proofing for cattle and sheep. Late winter is also the time for tree planting and we’ll be not only planting trees to pre-empt the sad loss of ash trees across the countryside to ash dieback disease, but we’ll also be planting hedges, and filling in gaps in current hedgerows. It’s a cold, bitter time, but it’s full of hope; the first rays of spring coming often at the end of the month, the promise of longer days and warmer weather.

Wherever you are this February, stay safe, stay warm, and thank you for buying seasonal British produce.

In season this month: Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celeriac, chicory, jerusalem artichoke, kale, kohlrabi, leeks, parsnips, potatoes, purple sprouting broccoli, salsify, shallots, swede, turnips – enjoy!

What is Love, Anyway? “Love”. It is one of the most frequently spoken words in the English language but often the word is used to express a general enjoyment as in “I love going to the cinema”. But, if asked to define what the word means, most people would think of romantic love – the one that attracts you to another human being. But what is that love and why do we feel it? Phase 3: Attachment Phase 2: Attraction or romantic passion

In reality what we think of as love has three distinct phases: • • •

When ‘love’ moves from lust into passion, we lose our ability to think rationally and can develop an obsession with the object of our desire. The phrase ‘love is blind’ is true in this phase, and we may be oblivious to our partner’s faults, even if they are obvious to all around.

Lust, or erotic passion Attraction, or romantic passion Attachment, or commitment

Phase 1: Lust This really needs no explanation. It’s the one that starts as we hit puberty and it evolved for the purpose of mating and reproduction. It’s a rush of hormones that occurs less frequently as we age, along with the ability to reproduce. Lust drives us to find a partner and in doing so may develop into phase 2 and 3. It is exciting and addictive. The serial philanderer may genuinely love their partner, but is so hooked on the high that comes from phase 1 they are unable to give it up.

Researchers at University College London found that people in love have lower levels of serotonin. These lower levels are the same as those found in people with obsessivecompulsive disorders, possibly explaining why those in love can think of little else than their partner. Couples in this stage spend many hours together – they really can’t get enough of each other. If this attraction remains strong and is mutual, then they usually enter the third stage: attachment.

This is the commitment phase, the one that creates a relationship which will last. Typically the passion will be fading and although not as exciting as lust and attraction, attachment is a deeper more contented feeling. Studies have shown that the more someone idealises their partner and turns a blind eye to their faults and less endearing personality traits, the longer the relationship will last. If however the behaviour is unforgiveable, such as being unfaithful, or one person simply cannot learn to live with the other’s ‘little ways’. the foundations of the relationship are undermined. Then every difference is highlighted and the couple may reach the conclusion that they are incompatible where they were perfectly happy in the attraction phase. Of course no relationship will endure unless both parties put in the effort and Valentine’s Day is your opportunity to confirm your lust, attraction or attachment to your other half.

Plenty of great wild events – in person and online – lie ahead this month

An Evening with Mike Dilger - My Wild Lockdown Thursday 10 February: 7.30-9pm The Burgess Hall, One Leisure, Westwood Road, St Ives, Cambridgeshire PE27 6WU Early this month the Wildlife Trust in Cambridgeshire have a treat in store to spend an evening in the company of wildlife TV presenter Mike Dilger. Making a personal appearance the ecologist, natural history presenter, writer and wildlife reporter will reveal how the last two years have impacted his work. With a life-long passion for British and tropical flora and fauna, of which he has profound experience and knowledge, Mike is committed to bringing the beauty of the natural world to a broader audience with enthusiasm and insight, rather than sensation or gimmicks. As the global pandemic shook the planet to its foundations, one small unintended consequence of early lockdown was that Mike’s normal day job of filming wildlife in all four corners of Britain virtually disappeared at a stroke. Initially with his wings clipped and confined to barracks, Mike couldn’t shake the feeling that he was missing out, but gradually, as spring turned to summer, what helped retain his sanity was the joyful and simple pleasure of rediscovering the wildlife just beyond his own family’s doorstep. Featuring clips from BBC1's The One Show, Mike reveals how he and his son Zachary managed to find the silver lining to the darkest of clouds cast by Covid. An enriching and illuminating evening lies in wait. www.wildlifebcn.org/events/2022-02-10-evening-mike-dilger-my-wild-lockdown

Discover the wonders of the Great Fen's wetlands - did you know, 40% of our planet's species live and breed in wetlands? Healthy wetlands store carbon and slow the flow of water, cleaning it naturally and reducing flood risk downstream. They support an abundance of plant life, which in turn provide perfect shelter, nurseries and breeding grounds for wildlife. Come and follow our trail around the nature reserve to discover some of the key wetland species that can be found in the Great Fen. From bats to bitterns, common frogs to crickets, marsh harriers to mosquitoes, it really is a wonderful world. There are so many species to discover including insects, mammals, birds, reptiles and plants all in the amazing setting of the Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre, Ramsey Heights. As always we have lots of nature-based activities to experience such as minibeast hunting, den building and pond dipping (offer subject to change depending on the weather) and fun crafts to make and take home. www.wildlifebcn.org/events/2022-02-16-discover-wonders-wetland-wildlife Join the Trust! Let's Get to the Point Acupuncture was invented by the Chinese and promoted all over the world. Its current history has exceeded 2,500 years, which goes some way to proving its worth, and this remedy is now used in almost all countries around the world. There is far more theory behind acupuncture practice but these are the basics … How does acupuncture work ? A large number of scientific experimental studies in Western medicine concludes that acupuncture has an efficient anti-inflammatory effect, which can reduce the pain caused by many chronic diseases. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the concept of Yin and Yang serves as the foundation for understanding health, as well as diagnosing and treating illnesses, creating balance, and an ideal state. The flow of vital energy (qi) is restored by using pressure, needles, suction, or heat (moxibustion) at hundreds of specific points along the meridians to prevent and cure diseases. In the concept of traditional Chinese medicine, you can sleep when you are sleepy, you can have plenty of energy after rest when you are tired, you can eat if you are hungry. These are the ideal states of a person with a relatively balanced yin and yang inside and outside. (Think of a typical healthy child, they are the most balanced group of yin and yang on this earth. If they want to cry, they cry and laugh if they want to. They are not judged and are not affected by any worries about money etc.) Traditional Chinese medicine treats the whole person, not just a disease. For example, for patients who come to me to improve rheumatism and bone pain, their appetite and absorption function will be improved in the end, so that their energy will be more abundant, and their attitude towards life will be greatly improved.

Can acupuncture help if you have no major illnesses? Healthy people who have not been diagnosed with any diseases

by a doctor can try acupuncture physiotherapy. In our modern world most of us suffer with some form of anxiety and stress, which can cause unexplained diseases. Although some people have not been diagnosed with a specific disease, longterm insomnia, anxiety, muscle pain, poor appetite, fatigue etc., may affect their ability to keep their spirits lifted. Acupuncture physiotherapy can help you feel better within yourself.

What issues does acupuncture treat best? At present, the most common conditions among my patients in the UK are autoimmune diseases such as rheumatism, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and digestive system-related like Crohn's disease, acute and chronic enteritis, stomach pain, gastric ulcers, etc. These often do not exist in isolation. After a long time of illness, you will find that rheumatism or rheumatoid arthritis may accompany digestive system problems, and the same digestive system problems can, in time, affect the state of the bones and muscles of our lower back.

My university major is English education, my parents wanted me to be a teacher. It was my parents who made the choice for me back then. In China, from the moment you are born your whole life is planned by your elders. In fact, at that time, I didn't know or understand what I liked and wanted. After finishing university, I worked for a company for a few years and did English training by myself, I was responsible for sales and marketing. My now husband was responsible for teaching English language and also the training of other teachers. I was under a great deal of pressure, and suffered with severe insomnia. So, I went to Xiamen Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine twice a week to treat my insomnia, whereby my sleep and anxiety were greatly improved. While I was there receiving treatment, I met another patient who presented with facial paralysis. She had undergone acupuncture every two days and two weeks later her face had completely recovered, I was so shocked and also curious about what else acupuncture could achieve. I wanted to have the opportunity to learn our great traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, but was worried about leaving a successful career to go back to university. A few years later I finally made up my mind to listen to my heart. Now fully qualified, married with a child, I am so very grateful to be able to work for myself and help everyone I can.

TSI-AN

ACUPUNCTURE

Does acupuncture hurt? 99% of people who experience acupuncture for the first time feel no pain. This is because, under normal circumstances, a patient’s first acupuncture treatment will feel like a very small pinch, and when the local muscle tissue has undergone long-term chronic inflammation and discomfort, the local nerves are relatively less sensitive. As the number of acupuncture treatments increase and the treatment site improves, the patient's feeling of needle pain will slightly increase, but this is a good phenomenon.

Everyone’s situation will be different. You can call me at any time for specific questions. I will answer all questions to the best of my ability. Please see my advert on the right for contact details. Lulu Dai, TSI-AN Acupuncture

A Better Night’s Sleep Sleep is an essential and involuntary process that is vital for maintaining good mental and physical health. One in four people are thought to suffer from sleep problems at some point in their lives, both getting to sleep in the first place and staying asleep. Sleep deprivation can affect mood, concentration, judgement and reduce our immune system’s ability to fight off minor ailments such as colds and flu. Furthermore, longterm deprivation can lead to health problems including diabetes, heart disease and clinical depression.

Don’t eat too early Eating the minute you get up doesn’t give your body chance to return to ‘full power’. Give yourself at least 30 minutes to come round before tucking into breakfast.

Don’t eat too late Eating your main meal earlier can also help with improving sleep. A large meal or late-night snacking or drinking can impact on your digestive system and cause heartburn. Leave at least three

hours between having a meal and going to bed.

Night light filters Telling you not to look at your phone, tablet or television for hours before bedtime simply isn’t practical. However, your phone or tablet has a blue light filter option and you can schedule that to come on automatically early in the evening. You’ll barely notice the difference on your screen but it will make a difference when you try to get to sleep. Most televisions also have a night-time setting too.

Make time to unwind As we rush through each day, balancing a busy lifestyle and juggling commitments, finding time for a rest can feel impossible. However, if the mind has no

opportunity to process information from the day, it waits until bedtime to recap. This results in a poor, restless sleep. Try to build rest into your day by meditating or power napping. The 15-minute time out from your day will create that internal chemistry that is just right for sleep. Additionally, deal with worries or a heavy workload by making a list of things to be tackled the next day.

Make your bedroom a sleep haven Create a restful space: your bedroom should be as quiet and dark as possible. Managing technology is very important, as you need a break from TV, computers, emails and mobile phones before going to bed. Without this break, you are over stimulating your mind and it will

be unable to find processing time. Set boundaries with technology and keep all gadgets out of the bedroom.

Keep a watchful eye on your caffeine and sugar intake Ensuring you eat healthily and minimise sugary snacks is essential for keeping your brain and body contented. Sugar causes the body to run on a higher energy pattern, which creates highs and lows as the quick-fix energy hit wears off. This, in turn, sparks a need for more sugar in the body via drinks and caffeine. Eating little and often and keeping hydrated with water, herbal teas and fruit juices, while minimising your intake of fizzy drinks and caffeine, will help ready mind and body for sleep.

Nothing says sexy quite like red lipstick, and the colour is as popular now as it has ever been. Although many women say they won’t wear it because it doesn’t suit them, it’s usually the rest of their make-up that is wrong.

Firstly, take it really easy on both eye make-up and blusher. Don’t use eyeliner and take care that your mascara isn’t giving you an over-the-top false-eyelash effect. Dust your face with a blemishsmoothing powder and your cheeks with a soft blush in a fairly neutral colour. Secondly, not all reds are equal. Tone your lipstick choice to your

complexion, choosing a plum shade if you have pink tones or a warmer red-brown if you look more sallow. Thirdly, don’t overdo it. Red lips, red clothes, red nails and red accessories will give you entirely the wrong sort of allure. The lips need to be the main feature and as far as practical everything else should be neutral.

Finally, if you are older you’ll find that your lips are narrower than they once were and strong dark shades of red can accentuate that. If you had thin lips even in your youth, you might find that red really doesn’t work for you. If that is the case, stick to a neutral lipstick but work on making more of your eyes, and use fluttering eyelashes instead of a pout to get the message to your Valentine.

Are you a business owner? If your beloved is your only employee, consider having E: pnbird@birdandco.ltd or info@birdandco.ltd www.birdandco.ltd a romantic evening meal. Staff entertaining does not give rise to an income tax 183 Main Street, Yaxley, Peterborough PE7 3LD charge for employees as a benefit-in-kind within certain limits. There is a £150 per head limit for benefit-in-kind purposes if unexpected tax bills are to be avoided This exemption only applies to annual events, so why not make it an annual occasion? What about a business tax deduction for your annual meal? Staff entertaining is allowable if it is not incidental to entertainment which is provided to others. However, HMRC may need convincing that (say) an anniversary meal with your significant other is ‘wholly and exclusively’ for the purposes of the business! TAX RELIEF FOR YOUR GIFT? Thinking of giving your beloved a romantic gift? There is an income tax exemption for ‘trivial’ benefits provided by employers where certain conditions (paraphrased below) are met:  The benefit is not cash, or a ‘cash voucher’.  The ‘benefit cost’ does not exceed £50.  The benefit is not part of ‘relevant salary sacrifice arrangements’ or other contractual obligations.  The benefit is not provided for particular employment services by the employee as part of their duties (or in anticipation of such services).  The ‘benefit cost’ of the benefit provided to the employee (or the amounts allocated to the employee where the benefit is provided to a family or household member who is not an employee) does not exceed the available exempt amount.  The next, which broadly applies to employees who are office holders (or family or household members who are employees) of closely-controlled companies, the individual has an annual exempt amount of £300. However, members of the office holder’s family or household who are employees of the same company each have their own annual cap of £300. DON’T FORGET THE RING! If you’re proposing marriage (or civil partnership), don’t forget to bring a diamond ring! Perhaps you bought it a long time ago in anticipation of the special day that you pop the question? There is no capital gains tax charge on the disposal of certain ‘wasting’ assets, i.e., those with a predictable useful life of 50 years or less. However, as ‘diamonds are forever’, trying to convince HMRC that it is a wasting asset is likely to be challenging! PRACTICAL POINT If the value of the ring is less than £6,000, the gift will still be subject to exemption from capital gains tax. If its value is more than £6,000, tapering relief is potentially available; the chargeable gain is restricted to five-thirds of the difference between the actual disposal value of the asset and the £6,000 chattel exemption limit. But if the disposal value is more than £15,000, marginal relief will not apply (i.e., 5/3 x (£15,000 – £6,000) = £15,000). The above article was first published in Tax Insider (February 2021) Certified Public Accountants supporting local businesses with cost-effective accountancy and taxation service for many years.
