welcome ... Leading UK parking company, Smart Parking, will take over the management of parking at the Broadway Shopping Centre and the Landsdowne Shopping Centre. This is hoped to be a massive incentive to encourage local customers back to the retail hub of our village. The local green-fingered amongst us have extra motivation to get their gardens in tiptop shape; as the Yaxley Open Gardens 2020 is announced on page 21. Gardeners are also being encouraged to get growing to help the UK’s falling numbers of butterflies and moths. Wild About Gardens draws inspiration from a new film adaptation of The Secret Garden, bringing the magic of wildlife, childhood and gardening to the big screen this spring when it blooms in cinemas from Good Friday, 10 April 2020. Read more about this and the huge restoration project being undertaken at The Great Fen on page 17. Residents and organisations in Yaxley and Farcet have joined together to offer support during the coronavirus pandemic. Turn to pages 10 and 11 to read more helpful information during this difficult time and don't forget to check with all venues to ensure that events are still going ahead.

Stay well and have a happy Easter,

75th Anniversay

On April 5, 2020, Alan Woods will open a telegram from the Queen to mark his 100th birthday – an opportunity for uncorking the bubbly, I think! Alan lives with his wife, Frankie Woods, in Oaktree Court, Yaxley. When asked about their longevity, regular, wholesome meals and laughter could be the secret. Frankie (96 years) reckons that the secret may also be due to a nightly dram of whisky. On 21 July 1945, just weeks before the end of WW2, Alan Woods married Gladys (Frankie) Ledgerton, having met up through their respective wartime service. This July, Alan and Frankie will be celebrating their 75th wedding

anniversary, along with two daughters and sonsin-law, three granddaughters, one grandson and nine greatgrandchildren, along with other family and friends. Becoming a centenarian may not be quite the rare achievement it used to be, but notching up three quarters of a century of married life cannot be that common in 21st century Britain. It would be intriguing to learn whether other local couples have trodden the marital path for quite so many years.

We’ve made lots of new friends along the way and watched amazingly talented demonstrators share their skills and knowledge of flowers. We’ve listened to some very interesting speakers, staged practical evenings; where we all tried a simple arrangement, 'Supermarket Sweep' when a few of our members arranged flowers purchased at various local supermarkets. Following our AGM in March we know we’ll have as much fun in the year to come. We are looking forward to some traditional and contemporary themed evenings and other exciting events. Smart Parking gives shoppers as smarter, fairer deal Leading UK parking company, Smart Parking, will take over the management of parking at the Broadway Shopping Centre and the Landsdowne Shopping Centre in Yaxley. Working closely with retailers at the sites, the company will provide improved facilities for motorists visiting the shopping centres. All motorists visiting the shopping centre will now receive an improved parking and retail experience including 2.5 hours free parking, clear signage and no parking restrictions on Sundays. Johanna Hiney, Sales Director EMEA, says: “I am proud to announce a new deal for shoppers in Yaxley. The new parking management system will give motorists improved accessibility, convenience and peace of mind. At a time of major decline on the UK’s High Street, an improved parking experience with 2.5 hours free parking will, we believe, be a massive incentive to drive local customers back to the retail hub of the town.” The changes will be clearly displayed on signage throughout the car parks and will state a 2.5-hour time limit with a 1 hour no return. There will also be a ‘White List’ for authorised cars of shop staff, flat occupiers, regular deliveries as well

Yaxley WI History on our Doorstep Due to ill health our February speaker cancelled at short notice but we were lucky enough to replace him with Don Chiswell. Sometimes we are more knowledgeable about other counties and parts of the country than we are about our local history so it was nice to hear Don speak so interestingly about Longthorpe Tower and I think several of us have marked it as a place to visit when it is next open. Our speaker for 9 April was due to talk on Alpacas but cancelled (the 4th cancellation this year!) so we now have Owen Wheatley who will speak about Reiki. As usual it will be held at 7.30pm in the upstairs room (stairlift available) at the Lancaster Club, Main Street, Yaxley, and we look forward to welcoming our members and any visitors who may be interested.

as local taxis. A tablet will be provided for those businesses where customers regularly stay over 2.5 hours and flat occupiers will be able to email to register visitor’s cars. In addition, a phone number will be available to leave registration plates on a recorded message for vulnerable tenants who may not have access to emails. Smart Parking has devised a new system to boost town-centre accessibility and offer motorists peace of mind. The company hopes the changes will increase the number of parking spaces available for shoppers and have installed a state of the art ANPR parking management system that monitors cars entering and exiting the car park. Smart Parking are members of the British Parking Association (BPA), and strictly follow the association’s guidelines. The company operates a BPA-audited appeals process and actively

encourages any motorists to use it if they have a problem. Johanna Hiney, Sales Director EMEA, says: “I am proud to announce a new deal for shoppers in Yaxley. The new parking management system will give motorists improved accessibility to parking. At a time of major decline on the UK’s High Street, an improved parking experience with 2.5 hours free parking will, we believe, be a massive incentive to drive local customers back to the retail hub of the town.” Jill Brown, Consultant at White Commercial Surveyors, says: “I am excited to have Smart Parking take over the management of our car parks in Yaxley. As a shopping centre we aim to give our customers the best possible shopping experience, and easier, fairer and better parking will greatly contribute to that.”

Home WI Water Lot of Fun

Alison McGuinness, President

We were joined by Sarah Oliver, or Sarah The Plumber, as she is known, at our March meeting. After several jobs Sarah decided she wanted to work for herself and chose to train as a plumber. After training and working alongside an already well-established plumber, she qualified and is now one of only18 qualified women plumbers in the UK. Sarah gave us a talk about how mains water works coming into our homes and how central heating works. We all managed to keep up with how water is pumped around our homes, heated for the hot water systems, stored in tanks (if you have one) and warms our homes through the central heating system. However, when we got to the part about the toilet, some of us didn’t manage to keep up. Who knew a toilet was so complicated, from the different types of flushes and keeping water usage to a minimum to the inner workings of the cistern itself with all its various working parts. Give me the central heating system to cope with any day. So after much laughter over ballcocks and ‘gurgling

pipes’ Sarah gave us a great insight into plumbing, although it’s probably best left to the professionals. We held our Leap Year Quiz on Saturday 29 February and had a great evening. John, our quizmaster, really stretched our brains with his questions. Congratulations go to the winning team ‘The All Girls’. A huge thanks goes to John Racey our quizmaster, Claire Neal and Caz Racey for organising the evening, and to our team of volunteers. Our quiz team ‘Holme in the Corner’ came first in the WI Spring Quiz, well done to all. Our Knit and Knatter group received a lovely thank you from Hinchingbrooke Hospital for the knitted pump holders donated to the Woodlands Centre. Please remember, if anyone is interested in joining please do come along and see what we are about and what we get up to. We meet on the first Thursday of every month at Holme Village Hall, Short Drove, Holme PE7 3PA at 7.30pm. For further details please contact WIholmevillage@gmail.com. All ladies will receive a warm and friendly welcome.

Easter A Moveable Feast! “Easter is early this year!” “Ooh isn’t Easter late this year?” By Sarah Davey

Easter never seems to come on time! In fact, it’s a different time every year. Why is that? We don’t move Christmas or New Year’s Day so what makes Easter so flexible? This year Easter Sunday falls on 12 April. I suspect that for once it’s actually on time though frankly who knows? The reason for Easter being something of a moveable (chocolate) feast is because it is celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal full moon, which is the first full moon after the spring equinox. The equinox is the instant of time during a year when the plane of Earth's equator passes through the centre of the Sun. This occurs twice annually. In the springtime this is around (but not exactly on) 20th March. Full moons occur every 29.5 days so between those two events there is quite a lot of leeway when it comes to dates, but Easter is always somewhere between March 22nd and April 25th. So now you can say with confidence that Easter is early…or late…or possibly right where it should be.

Happy Easter.

Dear Friends I have lived in lots of different places in my lifetime. All of them have been in this country but all of them have had very different scenery around them from outer London to the Shropshire Hills, Salisbury Plains to the Fens. I am always amazed by the variety and diversity around us in this country let alone the world. I love this time of year and the beauty around us which I think shows something of the extravagance of God. We might see this in the spring flowers, in the sunset or sunrise (depending if you are a morning person or not!). We might experience it in love and care from friends and family. Fear is building in our country and our world at the moment, yet our Easter story is one where life overcomes death, where light comes through the dark as Jesus overcomes death and the grave. As we enter April this year, April 12th is Easter Day, when we think about the ultimate new life – the new life that we have received because of the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus. Our Easter story of Jesus sharing The Last Supper, going to the cross and rising on that first Easter Day was I am sure a time of so much uncertainty for those first disciples as they saw what their friend went through. Even they thought it was the end, but on that first Rev Sarah (Vicar)

Easter Day we find those women going to the tomb to find that it was empty – Jesus was not there. They are met by angels telling them “Do not be afraid” and they go and tell Jesus’s friends the message that Jesus was alive. Jesus then came among the disciples and his words to them were “peace be with you” Jesus ate with them, he talked to them and he walked with them. Jesus had overcome death, he had beaten the darkness and made a new relationship with God for us that we could live with him forever. Whatever is happening in your life today, whatever fear or worry you might have, I pray that you know again these words of do not be afraid and peace be with you. As we journey through Lent and into Holy Week and await the sunrise on Easter Sunday, I pray you will know this story is for you and for me and for a world full of worry and fear. Jesus overcame the grave to show God’s love, God’s life and God’s light for each one of us. As you look around at the beauty around us, may you feel the joy and the wonder of that first Easter morning, of the hope that Easter brings to us and may you know the blessings and the extravagance of God who loves you, with you this Eastertime and always. Join us in our Holy Week preparations and our Easter celebrations. With every blessing

12 April - Easter Sunday 10.30 am

Come and celebrate Christ's resurrection with us on his joyful day. Our Coffee Morning will be on the 11th April and money raised at this event will be donated to The All We Can Charity. It will be great to catch up with everyone as Spring has returned at last. Come and see for yourselves why our homemade cakes are so popular. All We Can was previously known as the Methodist Relief and Development Agency. It's activities include responding to humanitarian crises with emergency relief, helps communities to be better prepared for disasters and enables people to take a stance against poverty and injustice. The charity's name is from a quote attributed to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. "Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can". Sunday Services are held at 10.30am. Everybody is welcome to join us. Minister: Rev. Be prepared…but don’t panic! Zombie apocalypse movies are perennially popular. Human beings love to imagine how we might survive after a global disaster. By Clare Becker Recent flooding and the coronavirus have prompted an interest in ‘prepping’, as in ‘prepping for disaster’. Preppers have historically been cast alongside conspiracy theorists, and American survivalists, who build bunkers, live ‘off-grid’ and are scarier than any imaginary zombie. As flooding and extreme weather become ‘normal’ events in the UK, and every year seems to bring a new pandemic threat it’s easy to see why people feel helpless, and why ‘prepping’ becomes seductive. Should we prepare for imminent disaster?

It does no harm to plan how we might be more selfreliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard. I would advise against specialist emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freeze-dried food tastes like garden mulch. The answer isn’t a straightforward yes or no. In this country we are fortunate that food is plentiful. However, food is supplied on a ‘justin-time’ basis, using predictions based on the public’s past shopping habits. If everyone shops normally, supply and demand remain balanced, but if large numbers of people suddenly panic-buy more than usual to stockpile food, shelves are stripped bare pretty quickly. It makes sense to be aware of this and to think about how we might manage if there was a temporary hiccup in our own food supply chain, perhaps because poor weather or flooding prevents us from accessing shops, or because we’re confined to our home through illness or quarantine. It does no harm to plan how we might be more self-reliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard. I would advise against specialist emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freeze-dried food tastes like garden mulch. A few extra tins in your weekly shop is easy for most people to achieve. Remember, in most instances you will already have food in, which can be used up first. Useful items for an emergency store cupboard: tinned meats, tinned vegetables, tinned beans, pulses and chickpeas, tinned soups and packet soups, tinned fruit, a large bag of rice, a large bag of porridge oats, cooking oil, salt, honey, long-life milk, long-life orange juice, packs of cereal, cereal and protein bars, dried fruit. If you live in an area where flooding and therefore water contamination is likely allow 2 litres of bottled water per person per day for drinking and cooking. A simple emergency store cupboard can be built up over a couple of months quite easily by adding a few extras into your weekly shop. A can opener is essential. Torches, batteries, and a camping stove insure against loss of electricity, and loo roll, bleach, hand sanitiser, paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters and disinfectant are useful health and medical items. If you live in a flood zone, make sure your supplies are stored high up. Use a vermin-proof storage box in the coolest place possible, and every so often move items out into your regular cupboards, and replace them, to make sure that nothing goes beyond its sell-by date. One last thing. We all have important documents filed away such as birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and house deeds. Ideally these should be stored in a fire and waterproof deed box to protect them. A little thought and preparation goes a long way. No bunker required!

Each year, a theme is selected that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world.

Stress Awareness Month is held every April to increase public awareness about both the causes and cures for our modern stress epidemic. Talk about stress and its effects, share your coping mechanisms and be nice to those who are stressed and anxious. The most crucial thing you can do when you are stressed or anxious is to make sure you are continuing to look after yourself. Make time to relax when you need to and learn to say ‘no’ to requests that are too much for you.

Please note, we cannot guarantee all our volunteers are DBS checked.

Self Assessment Tax Returns for 2020 A tax return can be filed as soon after the tax year ends once you have collected all that is required – you do not have to wait until the following January. It is far better and less stressful to get everything together sooner rather than later and of course the sooner you will know what the dreaded tax bill is in the following January. Also, if your tax return is prepared before the second payment on account in July is due and if your tax is less than the previous year, you can apply to reduce it. Helpful Housekeeping Tips for the Tax Year Ended 5 April 2020 If you were scrambling around last tax year to get everything ready for your accountant or even yourself to enable your tax return to be prepared, why not follow these few tips to make life easier. 1. As soon as you receive information relevant for the tax year 2019/2020, make a file (or obtain a proverbial shoebox) to keep everything together. These are a few items you should obtain and keep; 2. P60’s or P45’s; 3. Pension statements; 4. If you are a landlord and claim mortgage interest relief, keep the mortgage statement(s) that are in respect of let property; 5. Obtain and keep bank/building society interest certificates for all accounts that pay you interest; 6. Keep all dividend vouchers in respect of dividends received; 7. Making Tax Digital (MTD), a new way to file your tax returns by submitting five per year is due to come into force in April 2021, but no exact date has been given yet. It might be worthwhile to consider MTD now so you are ready when it actually does come into force; 8. Don’t forget that if your spouse or civil partner has not used all their personal allowances, they may transfer 10% of their PA to you, providing you are not a higher rate tax payer.

12

Tips for Self Employed and owner managed limited companies: 1. Obtain and keep invoices and/or receipts for all expenses. HMRC could refuse you tax relief or input VAT if you have no evidence of an expense without a receipt or VAT invoice. Advisory note - fuel receipts etc. do fade if left in sunlight; 2. Obtain and keep all bank statements where business transactions are made; 3. Write up your records on a regular basis, there is nothing worse than having to write your records up for a long period. 4. You should also be aware that some accountants charge a higher fee if preparing your tax return in the January, but please note we never do. These are only a few ideas to consider and there may be many other “housekeeping” matters you could attend to make your life easier (and your accountants) and take some of the stress out of preparing tax returns.

cookwise

Beef Rendang Preparation time: 40 mins

Cooking time: 2 and a half hours

Serves: 6+

Ingredients 3 tbsp vegetable oil 2kg beef shin or skirt, cut into bite-sized chunks 2 lemongrass stalks, bruised 2 x 400ml cans coconut milk 4 tbsp unsweetened desiccated coconut 2 kaffir lime leaves, torn 1 Beef stock cube 2 tbsp tamarind paste 1 tsp sugar ¼ tsp salt

Recipe

For the paste 1/2 - 3 chillies chopped (depending on taste) 6-8 baby shallots 2 inch / 5cm piece ginger, chopped three cloves garlic

Method  For the paste, place all paste ingredients into a small food processor and blitz until smooth.  Heat the oil in a heavy-based flameproof casserole dish or large saucepan. Fry the paste for 5-10 minutes until golden. Add the beef chunks and the lemongrass and mix well.  Once the beef has coloured, add the coconut milk plus 250ml water. Bring to the boil, then lower to a very low simmer, uncovered for 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the rendang sticking, and more often towards the end.

 Towards the end of the cooking time toast the coconut in a frying pan on a low heat for 5-7 mins until golden brown. Set aside to cool.  Using a blender, coarsely blend it to finer pieces – but not too fine. Put to one side.  After 2 hrs, add the coconut, kaffir lime leaves, stock cube, tamarind paste, sugar and salt to the pan. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes. The meat should be tender and falling apart when touched. Serve with rice and green salad.

Farcet C. of E. Primary School Our School Council have been working hard to produce a school newspaper for the children at Farcet. We are just about to publish the very first edition so have included an article that will be included. This have been written by the children who are really enjoying the process of working together to create ‘Farcet School News’. Edison Class Visit Oakham Castle

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School We have recently celebrated World Book Day, the children came into nursery dressed as their favourite book characters. The children made book marks and drew their favourite characters. As we approach the final term before our preschool leave us to start their new adventure at big school the children are focusing on getting ready for school! The children have been learning to become independent, putting on their own coats and shoes; they also have been learning the letters and sounds in the alphabet and recognising numbers. We are currently taking bookings for September 2020 and also into 2021! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

On Tuesday 28 January 2020, Edison class went to Oakham Castle on a school trip. Some of us made gingerbread to have at lunch for the banquet. The others made walls using stone and mud. We had our lunch at the banquet table and then we made medieval dolls, which children would have played with. The best part was when we met Sir John the Knight because he trained us on how to be a knight and we could charge at him with our swords! At the end of our trip, we also learnt some medieval dance. Folksworth Preschool Hooray for Ray Ray As you may be aware, we have recently had World Book Day (WBD), and once again the children (and staff!) excelled themselves with their costumes. From the ‘Beast of Buckingham Palace’ to the ‘Very Hungry Caterpillar’ it was great to see so many book characters brought to life and lifted off the page. It has also been a very busy time for Ray Ray – our Pets as Therapy Read2Dog. The children love to read to Ray Ray and benefit tremendously from his calm and nonjudgemental presence. He has helped lots of children gain confidence in their reading, and even speaking in front of groups of people too. His regular sessions within school are always popular, as was his costume for WBD! Thank you Ray Ray - you really are helping us to inspire a love of reading within all our children. re ca rs ild che ed Ch ou ept v cc a

William De Yaxley

By Heidi and Frances

William De Yaxley CE Academy Here at William De Yaxley CE Academy, our ultimate aim is for the children to become fluent in written communication. One important aspect of this is to be able to spell correctly. We encourage the children where possible to sound out the word. We also encourage the use of a dictionary to check spelling whilst editing writing. Additionally, the children are reminded of the spelling rules, patterns and word families explicitly taught during Read, Write, Inc. spelling lessons. For children who still find spelling challenging we provide further opportunities to assist these children. Heidi is going to explain what she does to help with her spelling. I find spelling tricky. I have been trying a few different methods to make it more fun and easier to spell. I do this twice a week for half an hour during assembly time. I will share a few ways to make spelling fun. Hair bobbles I use hair bobbles as one of my strategies along with two pin boards. I pick a word from my spelling flash cards, I select them at random. Then I spell the words out using the hair bobbles and the pin boards. I find silent letters difficult to remember. Using this method, helps me remember the silent letters in the word as I underline the silent letters and split digraph. Peg beans I also use peg beans, I find this easier to use when spelling smaller words. I create each letter for the word in a different colour, which helps me remember the word. I try to sound out the word as I’m doing this. I would recommend this method, because this helps me to spell in a new and fun way. Spelling mnemonics A spelling mnemonics is a memory device, such as a pattern of letters, to help you remember something. For example, of the word earth elephants are really tall headed. Word cards I use word cards to sound out the words that I find tricky. This helps me to recognise the sounds in the word. I trace my finger around the words to help me identify the words. Sand In the future, I want to try sand more since, I have seen other pupils in the school using this technique. I aspire to be a great speller. I think using more methods will help me remember more words to make my vocabulary range bigger. I would recommend using a dictionary and these two books by Lidia Stanton – 200 tricky spellings in cartoon and tricky spellings in cartoons for children.

Pupils from Sawtry Junior Academy design signs to encourage responsible driving and parking Sawtry Junior Academy has launched a campaign to encourage safer driving and more considerate parking outside the school. The academy, which is part of the Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT),wants to increase awareness of road safety and reduce the amount of traffic outside the school during peak school hours. Sawtry Junior Academy faces a challenge with parents parking and driving carelessly outside the school during peak times. To combat this, the academy ran a competition for pupils, giving them the chance to createpostersthat would be featured on lampposts around the academy building. The winning designs were then chosen to be featuredon a banner, which is now displayed outside the school gates. Sarah Flack, Principle at Sawtry Junior Academy which was recently rated ‘Good’ in all areas by Ofsted, said: “Sawtry Junior Academy has an obligation to protect pupils andwe have to ensure that the area at the front of the school is not dangerous.” “We have made various attempts to communicate to parents the importance of driving

and parking safely when in close proximity of the school.” “I hope this campaign will send the right message and that more responsible driving and parking will be displayed outside the school.” Safety conscious pupils were tasked with designing a picture that highlights the important message of responsible driving and parking. From these, seven designs were chosen as winners by a group of judges. The winning pupils will now have their artwork featured in a banner and displayed outside the school. Zoe, a pupil at Sawtry Junior Academy, said“It is important to drive and park safely because there are a lot of young children at the school and we don’t want anyone to be hurt.” Kitty, another pupil atSawtry Junior Academy, said: “We are pleased our poster was used for the campaign because we put a lot of time and effort in to it.” Sawtry Junior Academy teaches over 200 pupils between the ages of 7 and 11 years.

Yaxley Infants School E-safety and a flood of parents. Last month our children took part in Safer Internet Day. ICT has become an integral part of our everyday lives and children are exposed to more and more digital media. While the children enjoy these opportunities to connect with the outside world via apps such as You Tube, they do present dangers to children. Safer Internet Day this year was under the theme of, Together for a better Internet. Mr Johnson led a morning assembly and spoke to the children about how to stay safe. The children then completed activities throughout the day to embed this knowledge. If you would like to know more about how you can keep your child safe using the internet then go to https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/saferinternet-day/2020 for more information. We also had over 80 parents visit the school over a

5-day period that coincided with World Book day. Parents were invited to story cafés, and story shares in all the year groups. Reading continues to be a big priority here at YIS, Ofsted also have an increased focus on the development of reading which is great. As mentioned before, we have invested heavily in new reading books and resources (£10,000) and more importantly having parents in school to support their child’s reading has just been fantastic. Year 1 parents were given an overview of the upcoming Phonics Screening Check and what it entails, they then listened to a story and made their own aliens. EYFS listened to stories and Year 2 teachers asked parents to complete a quiz about the core texts they had already covered this year. It was an amazing 5 days of reading and parental support. Thank you to all the parents for joining in.

Send for the cavalry

The weather warming up is often a trigger for the emergence of aphids homing in on our plants for nourishment. Aphids can overwinter either as eggs laid on plants, or soil, or as adults as they are fairly tolerant to temperatures down to around -14°C. Some aphids famed by ants are sheltered in ant colonies over winter and then in spring led out to graze on plants like cattle. It is at times like this that we need to call for the cavalry – principally: ladybirds, lacewings and hoverfly larvae. The hoverflies tend to come later in the season many migrating in from continental Europe but the ladybirds and lacewings will have overwintered on site to emerge to help us control the aphids. The tidier you were with your land over winter the fewer of the cavalry are likely to remain as they need shelter to overwinter safely such as fallen leaves and low growing plants too late for 2020 but worth remembering for autumn. An adult ladybird will consume around 100 aphids daily so they really do provide effective control. Remember not to reach for the pray gun at the first sign of aphids as any chemicals used will kill many more than the ‘pest’ including the super predators we need to hold them in check. Dispose of the chemicals and let nature take care of the rest for not only are the ladybirds and lacewings great for aphid control they add a certain elegance and beauty that can’t be poured from a bottle of poison.

WILD ABOUT GARDENS Run jointly by The Wildlife Trusts and Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), this year’s Wild About Gardens campaign, is encouraging gardeners to get growing to help the UK’s falling numbers of butterflies and moths. The new campaign draws inspiration from a dazzling new film adaptation of the Frances Hodgson Burnett classic, The Secret Garden, starring Colin Firth and Julie Walters. The film will be bringing the magic of wildlife, childhood and gardening to the big screen this spring when it blooms in cinemas across the UK from Good Friday, 10 April 2020.

Butterflies and moths are important pollinators and, along with caterpillars, are vital food for birds like robins and blue tits as well as bats. However, their habitats have faced catastrophic declines and once-common species like the small tortoiseshell have dropped by up to 80% in the last 30 years in some areas. An ideal butterfly garden has a wide variety of flowers throughout the year to support their life cycles – for butterflies and moths emerging from hibernation, egg laying females, caterpillars and then adults. Early flowering species include dandelions, aubretia and native bluebells which could be followed by buddleia and red valerian, wildflowers and long grass. Ivy flowers late into autumn - even a small flowerbed or flowering window box could throw declining numbers a lifeline, especially in urban areas.

The Wildlife Trusts’ gardening champion, horticulturist and TV presenter Frances Tophill says: “Our garden flowers and plants provide a rich source of rejuvenating nectar for these much-loved garden visitors as they emerge from hibernation to herald the start of spring. Go wild in your garden and leave the dandelions and daisies in the lawn to provide a meal, aim for year-round flowers and include a wildflower area for egg-laying females as well as gardeners’ favourites like lavender, nasturtium and verbena. The Wild About Gardens website is packed with information and easy actions we can all take to support butterflies and moths throughout their impressive life cycle.” www.wildaboutgardens.org.uk/

o The Great Fen

Events for all ages

The Great Fen is home to two National Nature Reserves, Woodwalton Fen and Holme Fen, protected for their unique habitat and the varied wildlife they support. Woodwalton Fen is in fact the first ever nature reserve in England, created by Charles Rothschild in 1910 and now belonging to the Wildlife Trust BCN. The area was once 'wild fen', a landscape rich in wildlife, but has seen dramatic changes through an eventful history. It is currently benefiting from one of the largest restoration projects of its type in Europe and the landscape is being restored and transformed for the benefit both of wildlife and of people.

The Great Fen is a wonderful place to visit, with many events taking place at the Wildlife Trust Countryside Centre in Ramsey Heights. Our clubs offer children of all ages the opportunity to experience nature through a variety of activities, such as building bird feeders, den building, bird watching, adventure trails, pond dipping and much more. We also offer mindfulness walks, wildlife training and talks for adult visitors.

Easter Chocolate

Chocolate poisoning is particularly common at this time of year, especially with the large amounts of Easter eggs that may be around your home. Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, which can be poisonous to dogs, as well as most other animals, including cats, rodents and rabbits.

How much is too much chocolate? The seriousness of the poisoning will depend on the amount, type and quality of the chocolate eaten. Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains, and therefore the more poisonous it is. White chocolate contains very little theobromine and although it is unlikely to cause theobromine poisoning, it is still very fatty and can make your dog ill.

What signs can it cause? As well as possibly causing vomiting and diarrhoea, chocolate is a stimulant, so it can cause excitement, muscle twitching, tremors, fitting and can increase the heart rate and blood pressure.

Hot cross buns Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas are all toxic to dogs and it is believed the dried forms of these fruits are more toxic than grapes. At this time of year, it is therefore important that hot cross buns are kept well away from your dogs.

How much is too much? It is not known why these fruits are toxic to dogs, or how much can be poisonous. Some dogs have eaten large quantities of this fruit and had no effects, while others have become unwell after very small amounts.

paws for thought

What signs can it cause? As well as possibly causing stomach problems, these fruits can cause kidney failure, which can sometimes be delayed by up to three days. Kidney failure may sometimes present as a decrease in urination, or your dog may also appear dull and show signs of increased thirst. Prompt treatment is important. If your dog does eat any amount, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Spring bulbs Incidents of poisoning from spring bulbs are most likely to occur from dogs eating the bulbs in autumn when they are planted, or in spring when they begin to flower.

Daffodils Effects from poisoning can include vomiting, stomach upset and salivation, but can escalate to dogs appearing sleepy, wobbly on their legs, or collapsing. In more serious cases fits and changes to heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure may occur. Dogs can also become unwell if the flowers are eaten, or if water from a vase containing daffodils is drunk.

Tulips The toxins found in this plant cause irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract and usually only result in drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea. Serious cases are rare, but effects could include heart problems and breathing difficulties.

What to do if you suspect your dog has been poisoned If you think that your dog may have eaten, touched or inhaled something that it shouldn't have, consult your local veterinary practice immediately. Do not try to make your dog sick. Trying to do this can cause other complications, which may harm your dog. In an emergency you can help your veterinary practice make an informed decision as to whether your dog needs to be treated by them, and if so, what the best treatment would be. Where possible you should provide your veterinary practice with information on:  What poison you think your dog has been exposed to (i.e. chocolate, ibuprofen, etc.). Include any product names, or lists of ingredients if relevant  How much they may have been exposed to (i.e. 500mg, 500ml, one tablet etc., even approximations may help)  When your dog was exposed to the poison (i.e. 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days ago) If your dog has been unwell, and if so, what clinical effects have been seen It is easier for a veterinarian to care for a poisoned dog if it is treated sooner rather than later. If you are in any doubt, do not wait for your dog to become unwell before calling for advice.

Spring crocus These flower in spring and are said to be of low toxicity and may only cause a mild stomach upset if eaten. These bulbs are not to be confused with autumn crocus, which flower in autumn and can cause severe stomach upset, kidney and liver problems and bone marrow depression.

If you do need to take your dog to your veterinary practice, make sure that you take along any relevant packaging, or a sample of the poison, i.e. parts of plant or fungi. Always make sure that you yourself are protected and cannot be poisoned in turn.

gardenview April is the perfect month for planting container-grown fruit trees and bushes. Try:

Container-grown

Dwarf apple trees, which provide interest all year round as well as fruit in the autumn.

fruit

Any of the currants. Blackcurrants are particularly nice. They are low maintenance and great in jams and pies. They like a sunny spot and plenty of water

By Rachael Leverton

Even if your garden space is limited you can still grow fruit trees and bushes. You can even grow them in containers on a balcony. The trick is to read the label. Look for dwarf varieties that won’t grow too large for your pot or garden. It’s a good idea to buy self-fertile plants too, especially if you don’t live in an area where lots of people grow their own fruit. Even on a small plot buy the biggest pot you can fit into the available space. Bigger pots hold more compost, so they contain more food, more water and more space for strong root growth. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and cover the base with drainage material. Handy hint – if wind is a problem on your site use heavy material like broken crockery or stones to add weight, whereas if you will need to be able to move the pot easily use polystyrene chunks, which are very lightweight. Fill the container with a loam-based potting compost. Remove the tree or shrub from its original pot, spread the roots a little and plant it in the new container to the same depth. Water the compost well initially and then whenever the surface is dry.

20

Raspberries are lovely. They fruit in summer and like a sheltered sunny spot. You buy raspberry canes rather than bushes. Look for a thorn-free variety. Blueberries grow really well and are great for growing in a container because they like acid soil and in a container, this is easy to provide. Look for ericaceous compost which you should keep moist because like most soft fruits they are quite thirsty plants. Collect rainwater for the purpose as blueberries are not keen on tap water. If you want to plant your fruit tree in the garden dig a hole as deep as the root system, and about three times the width. Place the plant into the hole and refill it. Then firming the soil with your foot. If the tree is in an exposed area you might need to stake it. Fruit is very easy to grow, and there are a huge variety of fruit trees or bushes to suit every garden size and aspect, so you’re bound to find the perfect plant for your space.

Happy gardening.

I like to grow strawberries in large hanging baskets to make the most of the space. They are easy to grow this way but make sure you keep them well fed with a high potash fertiliser as nutrients leach away from hanging baskets very easily. I protect all my container-grown soft fruit with netting my garden birds tend to view my patio display as a rolling all-season buffet laid on especially for their benefit.

20 & 21 June

Yaxley Open Gardens 2020 As the spring bulbs start emerging from the slowly warming, yet still very sodden earth, thoughts turn to getting the garden ready for the spring and summer months. A band of gardeners in the village have extra motivation to get their gardens in tip-top shape; Yaxley Open Gardens 2020. After a very successful event in 2018, Open Gardens is back on with some familiar and new faces and gardens to match. The 2018 event was created around the celebration of 100 years of the Great War and over £2,500 was raised for the Yaxley British Legion Poppy Appeal. It was an amazing weekend and as a main organiser and ‘garden opener’, it was a tremendously rewarding experience on many levels. One of the highlights for me was the opportunity to meet many new faces in the village, talk about gardens, of course, plus many other village subjects.

I even learned some things about my house and its one-time place for washing machine repairs from a business run in the outbuildings, plus its role as one of the village bakeries. After resting in 2019, we are very pleased to announce the launch of Yaxley Open Gardens 2020 on 20 and 21 June. This year, we are raising funds for The Yaxley British Legion branch to support a very worthy local community initiative, which is entirely in keeping with our original purpose - promoting an intergenerational event in the community. All funds raised will go to put on a tea dance and

entertainment for the residents of Olive Mead Residential Care Home to take place in July. At the moment we have 13 gardens committed to open; some new and some old ones updated with new features. The organising team wants to make this a really top gardening event and is looking more gardeners willing to open over the weekend. You don’t need a Chelsea Show Garden, nor do you need acres. We have gardens of all shapes and sizes, so if you are interested please get in touch – we guarantee you’ll really enjoy the experience.

Interested in opening your garden? Email Nick Baker: nickbaker1212@btinternet.com or 07775516253

20 April marks the start of National Stop Snoring Week Snoring is the distinctive sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose and throat. It is caused by turbulence which occurs due to a partial blockage that may be located anywhere from the tip of the nose to the vocal cords. During waking hours muscle tone keeps the airway in good shape. When we sleep our throat muscles relax and this decrease in tone can cause airways to narrow and vibrate. Though it can certainly feel like your partner is doing it to annoy you, no-one snores deliberately, and unfortunately it can't be cured. But it can be controlled. The key to control is to find out the cause of your particular snoring. Snoring can be related to the tongue, nose, mouth, or it can be multifactorial. Historically it was considered to be a male problem, but it actually affects males to females in the ratio of 2:1. Women tend to under-report and fail to seek help due to embarrassment because even in the 21st century it’s considered ‘unladylike’ to snore! The risk factors for snoring are similar in women to men: being overweight, smoking, and alcohol are common factors, but women also snore more following the menopause and it’s one of the symptoms of hypothyroidism. Snoring is often considered a joke, but it can have a devastating effect on people. Sleep deprivation (both the snorer and their partner) is physically and mentally debilitating and can lead to illness as well as relationship breakdown. The web address is britishsnoring.co.uk

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a particularly dangerous side-effect of snoring, defined as the cessation of airflow during sleep, preventing air from entering the lungs caused by an obstruction. It is considered clinically significant if a person stops breathing for more than 10 seconds each time and if occurs more than 5 times every hour. OSA only happens during sleep. When you experience an episode of apnoea during sleep your brain will automatically wake you up, usually with a very loud snore or snort, in order to breathe again. People with OSA can experience wakening episodes many times during the night and consequently feel very sleepy during the day. If you are excessively sleepy during the day and feel irritable or restless, you may be suffering from OSA. Your partner may point out that your snoring is loud, often interrupted by pauses and gasps. You might fall asleep at work, whilst driving, or during conversations. You might be forgetful and irritable and suffer with morning headaches. Not everyone who has these symptoms will have sleep apnoea but if you suffer with them a lot, you should seek advice from a medical professional. The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association (BSSAA) has a very helpful website packed with advice and useful questionnaires and information about all aspects of snoring. They even sell approved antisnoring devices. Here’s to a peaceful night’s sleep!

fit for life

If you can't go to the gym, bring the gym to you! Every new health or cancer scare that doctors uncover seems to come with the standard, "… keep fit, lose weight and eat healthy foods to minimise the risk…" statement. We know it’s true but finding time to get to the gym is difficult when our lives are so busy. By Robert Grant So why not bring the gym to your home? If you have an area that's big enough for you to lie down in, with your arms stretched out to either side, with a few extra inches for good measure you've got enough space to do a workout at home. No matter what your initial fitness level, aims and budget are you can start to exercise in the comfort of your own home.

Basic Fitness If you're after basic fitness you can try a home HIIT session. All you need is a timer or smartphone app and a workout program - there are loads of videos on YouTube for every fitness level. HIIT or High Intensity Interval Training works on short bursts of exercise, up to about 1 minute, with rests of maybe 30 seconds in between. It gets your heart rate up and gives you a great workout in a very short space of time. Exercises range from simple marching on the spot, squats, and leg raises right through to advanced press-ups and handstands, but all doable in the space we mentioned earlier. An exercise mat might help for any lying-down exercises and a resistance band or small set of weights is a useful addition, but that's about all you'll need.

Three, twenty-minute sessions per week and you'll really start to see some results. Do it in the morning before breakfast for maximum fat-burning efficiency, and to set you up for the day.

Strength Building your strength can also be done at home. Calisthenics is a form of training that uses your body weight instead of free-standing weights. Each exercise has a series of progressions from easy to very hard. Take the simple press up as an example. Start doing them whilst standing and leaning against a wall. As you move your feet further from the wall it gets harder. Eventually you'll be able to do a full press up on the ground. Then try positioning your hands closer to your waistline so you are leaning forwards as you press up - it's getting harder now. Then try leaning so far forwards your feet leave the floor and you're into a planche position - not for the faint hearted! Other calisthenics exercises need some basic equipment. Dips will need a set of dip bars. Pull ups will need some pull up bars. But all of these are relatively cheap to purchase and take up minimal space when not in use.

What about exercise machines? If you're starting out my advice is to avoid machines until you know what you like. You'll probably only have enough space and cash for one, and they are not portable so once you've got it you're stuck with it. Build up your basic fitness and strength first and then decide what you want to do. Once your body starts to show some results you might even be tempted to venture down to the gym to take advantage of a wider range of equipment!

Be sensible Always be careful with your body. Seek professional advice before starting any exercise regime. Make sure you're working safely and within your capabilities. Start easy and work up to the harder progressions. If you have any signs of pain or discomfort, STOP! Rest, recover and assess the situation. Above all have fun getting fit and staying healthy.

staysafe Don’t be fooled by the rogue traders this April – and give doorstep traders the brush off WITH the milder weather finally here – many of us choose this time of year to give our home exterior or garden a spring clean If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house or the exterior itself. However, there is a fair chance that before you have the opportunity to research and contact a tried and tested, reliable tradesperson – an unscrupulous cowboy builder or rogue trader will be knocking at your door! But whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, just when you have returned from the school run or got home after a long day at the office – a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision. Equally as disturbing, they will target elderly or vulnerable people living alone. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is.

Remember: • Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. • Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. • Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. • Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. • Feel free to ask to see their credentials and /or examples of their work. • Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach.

However, there are a few simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader: • Do they say, ‘we are only in your area today’? • Are they offering a reduced price for cash or having a one-time ‘special offer’? • Are they trying to push you into making a quick decision?

Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams of this kind. stay safe

Register your appliances Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging residents to register their appliances for a safer home in 2020 All you have to do is visit registermyappliance.org.uk, and register large appliances bought in the last 12 years. Registering your appliances can instantly improve safety in the home. It ensures that householders can be contacted swiftly if a safety repair is ever needed or if an item is recalled by the manufacturer, helping to prevent the risk of fire. With many households relying on appliances every day to handle essential chores, chill food and cook for their families, this quick task can give you peace of mind.

Book a Safe and Well visit Did you know Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service offer free home safety visits to those who are most vulnerable in our community?

Our visits cover fire safety in the home, falls prevention, staying well and warm and crime reduction. Call 0800 917 9994 or visit www.cambsfire.gov.uk/safeandwell to find out more and book a visit or make a referral.

Get the call - become an on-call firefighter Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit more on-call firefighters to help serve local communities across the county. CFRS is looking for men and women from all backgrounds to become on-call firefighters and provide emergency cover from either their home or their workplace. On-call firefighters are a vital part of our Service and community. They respond to a wide range of incidents,

from fighting fires, attending road traffic collisions, animal rescues to supporting other emergency services. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, our on-call firefighters support their communities by providing information and advice on a range of community safety topics.

They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). It’s a hugely rewarding role, and we hope to encourage members of the community from all backgrounds to get in touch and find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter.
