yaxleyhub Yaxley Methodist Chapel (Main Street, Yaxley) When looking back at my notes page I found the last one I had begun, but obviously not completed because of Covid 19, was to tell everyone about our Easter Services. These of course, could not take place in our Chapel. However, we were able to move very quickly to the Internet and we were able to sing Thine Be The Glory on Easter Sunday with great joy and gusto. I admit to being a technophobe before lockdown but it quickly became important for me to bite the bullet and learn. To be part of the Yaxley Gazette Facebook support network, thanks to Justine; to joining Houseparty so that our family could share time together and being able to take part in the Services led by our Superintendent, Rev. Langley Mackerell-Hey, has enabled me to keep in touch with our congregation and with the Village. As I mentioned previously our services are via the Internet and can be found on the Peterborough Methodist Circuit Facebook page and on YouTube. The number of people joining in on a Sunday morning at 10.30 and at 8.30 for prayers during the week is amazing. Our Senior Steward Peter, has been delivering a weekly service sheet to

people in the Village who do not have access to the Internet and these have been well received. Sarah has regularly been offering encouraging words via our Facebook page. If you would like to contact us please do. There is a post box by the Chapel door if you have no internet access. We are there for you. Our village has shown how we can pull together and support each other during this surreal time. 'All We Can' was previously known as the Methodist Relief and Development Agency. It's activities include responding to humanitarian crises with emergency relief, helps communities to be better prepared for disasters and enables people to take a stance against poverty and injustice. The charity's name is from a quote attributed to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism: "Do all the good you can. By all the means you can. In all the ways you can. In all the places you can. At all the times you can. To all the people you can. As long as ever you can". This is what our Village community has been doing for the past 5 months isn't it ? With Justine, Stewart, David and our wonderful volunteers, our local shops and many others devoting so much of their time for us we give thanks. God Bless you and keep you safe.

YAXLEY

Not too much has happened during June as of course we are unable to re-start our club. We are keeping well and following guidelines although I don't think too many of us rushed to the pubs when they reopened!

By Paulne Brown With the restrictions easing it is good to meet up with a few people outdoors and with the prospect of fine weather returning we will definitely take advantage of it. We have carried on with our gardening, baking and some members have done on-line craft courses via Denman College. Because of more time on our hands we have been able to appreciate nature and even in a small garden it is surprising how much is going on. We must say a big thank you to our local businesses who kept us supplied with fruit, baking products and gardening items whilst we were in full lockdown, and let us continue to support them. Keep well everybody and as the late Vera Lynn says• "we'll meet again" we know where but have no idea when!

St Peter's Church I hope that you are all keeping safe as we move into a new month, a time that has always been for holidays and breaks from some of the normal routines. Maybe you are hoping to have a break this month, maybe you are not able to get away this month or perhaps this is the furthest thing from your mind in these times. I don’t think we will know what “normal” will look like for some time. For us as a church in Yaxley, we are working out what we are able to do in this season. We know that there are many things that we cannot do in terms of our services, singing or being together. However, St Peter’s Church is now open on a Thursday evening for people to come in for their own private prayer between 7pm and 9pm. We have social distancing and hygiene measures in place. Anyone is welcome to come and use the church building on a Thursday evening for prayer. At this time, our services continue to be on-line on our St Peter’s, Yaxley You Tube Channel and we continue to plan as to how and when we can open the church building for worship. Every summer St Peter’s runs a Holiday Club. We are sadly unable to run this in 2020 in person due to Covid 19, but

4

we are organising some activities for you to do at home or around the village and we are hoping that you will be an Explorer during the summer holiday as we look at creation. Activity packs will be available to collect from the church porch from Monday 27th July and these will have craft material and other items for different activities that will take place throughout July and August. Each week there will be new challenges for you to undertake as you explore your home, garden and our village of Yaxley and perhaps you will find out more about our creation story in the Bible. We will put out the activities every week on our Facebook Pages – St Peter’s, Yaxley and the Community of St Peter’s Facebook Page so have a look every week and see some different challenges. Please share the results of your challenges with us on Facebook or email photos to me at yaxleyvicar@ gmail.com. You don’t have to be a child to take part – all ages very welcome . In this month, I pray that you are able to get some rest and relaxation after a strange few months, and we look forward to sharing our explorations with you this summer. With every blessing, Rev Sarah (Vicar of St Peter’s, Yaxley)

Team Sementa Team Sementa was created when Mum sadly passed away in 2012. My mum and family were always proud of my charity work, so I founded Team Sementa wanting to do something in her memory after she passed away in 2012. As the fundraising continued beyond what I had imagined, I now want to show my two daughters, Isabella and Sienna, how important it is to help others. It has been great to have my dad and brothers involved too, and to have the full support of Amy, my wife. Making her and my girls proud also pushes me to raise more.

COVID-19 SNAKE Add a painted rock to the snake. Let's see how long we can make it! PLEASE DON'T REMOVE THE ROCKS. Thank you for your contribution. Stay Safe. TOGETHER, WE CAN DO THIS!

The plan was 5 football games and to raise £500 for Macmillan by getting old team mates and friends together. 129 games later, over £33,000 raised and over 600 players involved, the games are going from strength to strength. My aim is to raise as much for charity as possible. I have supported numerous charities

including, Macmillan, Sue Ryder, Young People’s Counselling Service, Cancer Research, Clic Sargent, Mind, Anna’s Hope, Boxing Futures, East Anglian Children's Hospital, Teenage Cancer Trust, Facet, Make A Wish Foundation and more. I have been lucky enough to be a Pride Of Britain regional finalist in 2018 and winner of the Pride In Peterborough award in 2019. I never do charity work for recognition but these nominations have helped me raise the profile of the games. If anyone would like to get involved or sponsor a game, please get in touch with Marco Semento marco_sementa@hotmail.com

Yaxley Rocks! The painting re-hiding and finding of rocks has been a popular thing all over the world for many years, but with Covid-19 sweeping the world this activity increases the risk of infection. So, rock artists have come up with a new thing, a Covid 19 rock snake. You paint a rock and add to the end of the snake as each rock makes it longer. We now have one in our village. It's located near the co-op opposite Fourfields School. It's amazing how much it has grown over these last few weeks. It's such a lovely feeling seeing how much the

community has embraced the activity and come together to spread some joy and show unity. If you're out on a walk and you haven't seen it it's really a lovely sight at last count there was over 350 colourful rocks painted by both adults and children of our community. Watch this space as we're in the planning stages of another more permanent rock painting activity for our village over the next year. Take care. Yaxley rocks! By Charlotte Griggs

STAY SAFE

Why not share your home made masks with us on the Yaxley Gazette Facebook Group

It is your responsibility to adopt these principles wherever possible. None of these principles can completely remove the risk of catching coronavirus on their own. You should use them all wherever and whenever appropriate.

You must wear a face covering at all times on public transport or when attending a hospital as a visitor or outpatient, or when visiting the shops.

1. Keep your distance from people outside your household or support bubble.

Your face covering must cover your nose and mouth at all times.

2. Keep your hands and face as clean as possible. Wash your hands often using soap and water, and dry them thoroughly. Where available, use sanitiser outside your home, especially as you enter a building and after you have had contact with surfaces. Avoid touching your face. 3. Keep indoor places well ventilated. 4. Avoid crowded spaces. 6. Work from home if you can. 7. If you have to travel (for example, to work or school), think about how and when you travel. 8. Face coverings.

It is mandatory to wear a face covering in shops and supermarkets, as well as on public transport.

If you can, you should also wear a face covering in other enclosed public spaces where social distancing isn’t possible and where you will come into contact with people you do not normally meet. This is most relevant for short periods indoors in crowded areas. Evidence suggests that wearing a face covering does not protect you. However, if you are infected but have not yet developed symptoms, it may provide some protection for others you come into close contact with. Face coverings do not replace social distancing. If you have symptoms of COVID-19 (cough, and/

or high temperature, and/or loss of, or change in, your normal sense of smell or taste - anosmia), you and your household must isolate at home: wearing a face covering does not change this. You should arrange to have a test to see if you have COVID-19. Face coverings should not be used by children under the age of 3 or those who may find it difficult to manage them correctly. It is important to use face coverings properly and wash your hands before putting them on and taking them off. You can make face-coverings at home. The key thing is it should cover the mouth and nose. 9. Avoid shouting or singing close to people outside your household or support bubble. 10. Reduce the number of people you spend time with in a work setting. 11. Wash your clothes regularly. 12. When at work or in business or public premises, follow the advice on site.

You can see the guidance for employers and businesses on coronavirus on gov.uk and can ask your employer if you have questions. www.gov.uk/government/publications/how-to-wear-and-make-a-cloth-face-covering/how-to-wear-and-make-a-cloth-face-covering

World Breastfeeding Week Set every August for the first seven days of the month, World Breastfeeding Week aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health and welfare of babies, as well as a wider push for maternal health, focusing on good nutrition, poverty reduction and food security. The event is organised every year by the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), a global network that aims to protect, promote and support breastfeeding around the world. Along the way, it works with the World Health Organization and

Unicef to get its aid to the right people in theright communities.

Cavernoma Awareness Day 15 August 2020 Each year, hundreds of people are diagnosed with a Cavernoma. One person in 600, in the UK, has a brain Cavernoma without symptoms (asymptomatic). This equates to roughly 90,000 people – enough to fill Wembley Stadium. This annual event helps to highlight the frequency of Cavernomas in society and encourages people with a Cavernoma to join a community of people with a similar condition.

The Chancellor announced the introduction of the Job Retention Bonus on 8 July 2020 This is a one-off payment of £1,000 to employers that have used the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS) for each furloughed employee who remains continuously employed until 31 January 2021. The bonus will provide additional support to retain employees. To be eligible, employees will need to: • earn at least £520 per month (above the Lower Earnings Limit) on average for November, December and January • have been furloughed at any point and legitimately claimed for under the CJRS •

have been continuously employed up until at least 31 January 2021.

Employers will be able to claim the bonus from February 2021 once accurate RTI data to 31 January has been submitted. More information about this scheme will be available by 31 July and full guidance will be published in the Autumn. The Chancellor also announced other measures, including: • the Eat Out to Help Out Scheme – during August, diners can get 50% off Monday to Wednesday on meals and non-alcoholic drinks, up to £10 per person, when eating at participating restaurants, bars, cafes and other establishments that have registered • VAT reduction – from 15 July until 12 January 2021, the UK government will cut VAT from 20% to 5% on any eat-in or hot takeaway food and drinks from restaurants, cafes and pubs, excluding alcohol. This VAT reduction also applies to all holiday accommodation in hotels, B & B’s, campsites and caravan sites, as well as attractions like cinemas, theme parks and zoos • an increase in the Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) threshold in England and Northern Ireland – increasing the threshold under which no SDLT is paid on the purchase of a main home from £125,000 to £500,000, with immediate effect until 31 March 2021. farmertom “Agriculture is our wisest pursuit, because it will in the end contribute most to real wealth, good morals, and happiness.” Thomas Jefferson

In these times, there has been focus in the media on the widespread problem of isolation and loneliness and how this can also affect our health It has also been reported that being outside in nature can naturally improve our mood and sense of wellbeing. Ourfarm always aims to address both these vital issues within our community through maintaining our footpaths and gates, to hosting events like farm walks and other events like Open Farm Sunday (organised by LEAF). This year, across the country, those important events had to be cancelled, but walking and enjoying the outdoors is thankfully not cancelled. We hope that you have been able to get out and about and enjoy those footpaths, the countryside and outdoor spaces for your continued health. Perhaps this August, on one of your walks you may wish to stop and view the combine at work bringing in the valuable grain we need for our food supply. August mostly means one thing on our farm: harvest. Interesting fact: the word ‘harvest’, comes from

naturewatch

the Old English haerf-est which means ‘autumn’ or ‘august’ and indicated the period of time in the yearly calendar when the crops had reached maturity and were ready to be gathered in. Less than 100 years ago, most able-bodied people in the village would come out to help gather in the harvest, and school holidays would be set so that children could help in the fields. These days, we take out our combine and tractor (with trailer) with just a few people and gather in the fields much quicker. If we get plenty of dry, sunny weather the harvest should come in relatively quickly this year; we’re really hoping not to repeat last year’s wet, delayed harvest. Due to the excessive rain we had in both the autumn and spring, unfortunately many farmers were not able to sow as many crops as they would have normally. This year will prove to be a smaller harvest for many farmers across the country. Thankfully, the summer so far has

proven to deliver the right mix of sunshine and rain and we are excited to see what mother nature will provide this year as we bring in the harvest. August is probably my favourite summer month producewise, as the shops are heaving with fresh local produce. This month be on the lookout for: artichokes, aubergines, beetroot, blackberries, blueberries, Bramley apples, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cherries, courgettes, cucumber, fennel, garlic, gooseberries, greengages, Jersey Royal potatoes, lettuce (Cos and Iceberg), loganberries, marrow, new potatoes, onions, pakchoi, peas, plums, radishes, raspberries, redcurrants, rocket, runner beans, spinach, spring onions, squash, strawberries, sweetcorn, tomatoes, turnips, and watercress. Thank you for buying British, buying local, buying best and supporting British farmers, fishermen and food producers!

As humans finally begin to emerge from lockdown, battered and in some case mourning losses from Covid-19, how has this period impacted upon bugs?

Bugs AFTER LOCKDOWN

Initial impacts for bugs are mostly positive, with less pollution making it easier for them to detect food such as pollen and nectar. There is also less light pollution, as many large complexes and stadia have turned off the lights, less traffic reducing the risk of road kill, and more habitat as large areas of public and private land have been left unmown.

Photography by Tom and Lisa

The counterbalance has been habitat disruption in gardens and allotments as home dwellers have spent more time in their gardens clearing ‘weeds’, pruning and tidying whilst many fallow allotments are now fully cultivated as there has been a rush to grow your own. In addition, there has been a spate of paving and decking going on to create outdoor rooms to enjoy the lockdown sunshine. Fly-tipping has increased due to closure of disposal facilities and charity shops,

creating more litter and hazards in the natural world. The big risk now, as we emerge, is over zealous mowing of parks and similar spaces that may well undo the habitat gains of lockdown. Proposed new planning rules to kick start the economy may have dangerous consequences for important wildlife refuges. Pollution levels are at risk of rising as public transport is shunned in favour of cars. How we choose to emerge from lockdown will have a major bearing on which way the scales for nature tip. Just remember that during lockdown how much joy was found from nature in our gardens and how many rare sightings were recorded – we can and must emerge with nature in mind and make sure the balance is tipped firmly towards a green recovery and nature for all.

younggazette Hundreds of girls, young women and leaders from across Girlguiding Cambs West, enjoyed the excitement over the recent midsummer weekend as they took part in a special virtual sleepover challenge. They joined the thousands of members from across Girlguiding Anglia all connecting by completing the same activities and sharing their experiences online

VIRTUAL GUIDING for MIDSUMMER SLEEPOVER Girls from all sections of Girlguiding, Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers, Leaders and even Trfoil Guild members, slept somewhere other than their own bed and took part in a series of online Midsummer and camping activities. These included finding out about midsummer celebrations from other countries, designing a flower crown, and using recycled materials to create a sun medallion treasure hunt. Not forgetting the more traditional camp activities, including campfire songs, making s’mores and a sleeping bag stuff competition. Many joined other members from their units virtually through video calls, allowing them to connect with their friends and complete activities together. Girlguiding Anglia, who have around 70,000 members, wanted to launch the challenge to support their leaders and girls during the current

lock down situation. The aim was simply to provide fun and adventure through guiding activities at home and to enable members to feel part of the wider Girlguiding community. It also gave Girlguiding Anglia the opportunity to welcome and encourage parents, siblings and non guiding families to get involved and join in the experience. Girlguiding Anglia’s Chief Commissioner, Tracy Foster, said ‘I’m so proud of our amazing volunteers who have challenged themselves during lock down to take meetings online, send newsletters or activities to their members, all to ensure they can continue to offer amazing experiences to our girls and young women. To celebrate all the achievements we’ve seen across our region we wanted to create an interactive challenge that was flexible for leaders and parents to deliver at

home. The challenge also supports Girlguiding’s Adventures at Home initiative. Our Midsummer Sleepover Challenge has been a great success.’ Millie, a Guide in Somersham said: “Midsummer camp out! Exploring Stonehenge, making a sundial, s’mores, movie marathon and waking up for sunrise = best ever night of lockdown!!" Abigail, a Rainbow in Hampton said: “My favourite was going camping in the tent because I was comfy and I was excited!” Daisy, a Brownie in Sawtry said: “ It was a fun and different activity for lockdown, I enjoyed learning about Summer Solstice and Stonehenge” Jan, a Trefoil Guild member in St.Neots (photographed above, top left) said: “I enjoyed the overnight tent experience again but I am now too old and stiff and unable to get up off the ground to make it a regular occurrence!”

There is, of course, also a badge for the challenge which is now available for pre-order on the website, The Midsummer Sleepover Challenge is not limited to just the one weekend and the pack will be available on the Girlguiding Anglia website www.girlguiding-anglia.org.uk throughout the summer to allow members and non-members to take part at any time.

William de Yaxley As we start to count down our final days here at William de Yaxley, we are all thinking about our time here. Before the Covid-19 Lockdown we all thought we were ready to move up to our secondary schools but now that there are only days left until we leave our Junior School, we are starting to feel nostalgic about the last four years. Four years ago when we started William de Yaxley, we felt nervous about being the new children in a bigger school than we were used to. We knew less people and were unsure about the work we would have to do and the teachers that we were

By The Year Six Bubbles - July 2020. unfamiliar with. Now, here we are again, feeling the very same emotions. We are all going to new schools which are bigger than William de Yaxley, we are unsure about the work we will be expected to do and about the rules we will have to follow and the teachers we are as yet, unfamiliar with. The difference this time is, that we all agree that we have the experience and maturity to know that the anticipation is always much worse than the reality of the thing! William de Yaxley is a great place to come to school. We had residential trips every year, we had great

educational visitors that came to our school, we went on excellent day trips, we had great clubs, great sports and most of all great learning. We all agree that by being at William de Yaxley we all grew into the best versions of ourselves that we could be and we did it in a safe and supportive environment. We feel a bit sad about our time here coming to an end but we are all excited about our new adventure and will continue to be nostalgic about our valuable, memorable years at William de Yaxley.

Yaxley Infants School - Our School’s Legacy It’s that time of year when changes and new beginnings are looming. It’s also the time of year to reflect and get ready to say goodbye to our wonderful Year 2 children. Despite having to close in March we’ve created some wonderful long-lasting memories. Below are some of our leavers' memories:

zone, I liked meeting new friends. I have enjoyed learning lots of new and exciting things”. Tyler

“I felt very proud of myself when I achieved 45 golden awards.” George

“I have so many good memories, it’s very hard to choose, but I think one of my best memories is when we all had to try different smoothies. Watching people’s faces as they tried them was so funny. I liked nearly all of the smoothies but there was one that was disgusting!!” Noah

“I remember when we did an Easter Egg Hunt on the field with all my friends and family. It’s was really fun!” Lilly-Rose

“My best memory of Yaxley Infant School was playing hopscotch in the playground with my friends, I love playing with my friends.” Leah

“I have lots of memories, I loved the boat when we started in reception, I loved going in the construction

“I remembered when I was in Red Class with Mr Johnson, we had some eggs that hatched into chicks.

10 1010

By The YIS Team I was able to hold one and it felt tickly. The chick then pooped on my hand, which made me laugh. I also saw it standing in it’s food bowl and it pooped in it’s food! I remember giggling with Mr Johnson about it.” Gracie “I remember when we all ran around the playing field for Race for Life. This was to raise money for Cancer Research. We all got a medal at the finish line. I really enjoyed doing this and seeing my mum and dad cheer me on.” Ruby Let’s cherish these memories and take them with us as we look toward our next school year chapter before welcoming in our new and returning children in September.

Izzie's Koala Army

I wanted to write and let you know about Izzie, By Emma Wyse my amazing 5-year-old daughter.

After a visit to Australia in December 2019 to visit her uncle for Christmas, Izzie saw her first Koalas at Melbourne Zoo, fell in love with them and decided to start fundraising to help protect them.

She had an online book sale planned for Saturday evening where the host donated all of her commission plus has more raffles and ongoing bake sales planned.

Izzie has joined the Koala Army as part of the Australian Koala Foundation who help protect koalas and their habitat and help to plant the correct trees for koalas to use as their homes and for food. There used to be 100,000 koalas in the wild but now there is only 43,000.

She set up her stall at the end of our driveway on Saturday (27 June) morning but the wind blew our gazebo over and then the heavens opened (many times) so we continued our sales from inside. We made and sold over 250 freshly made scones and with people's very generous donations, Izzie raised a grand total of £256 in one weekend!! She took more orders for fresh scones this weekend and has now raised a grand total of £748! She's done so well!

Her Facebook page has surged from 40 likes last Saturday morning to over 422 to date. She has even been sent a certificate from Caversham wildlife Park, Western Australia thanking her for her good work and dedication and Facebook posts from people as far as Perth, Western Australia. She has also just

been featured in the Australian Koala Foundations Newsletter. Our Australian based family and friends have also shared her Facebook page so it's safe to say that Izzie is now global! Izzie, her three-year-old little sister, Poppy and myself will be making a special trip to Longleat Zoo in a few weeks so Izzie can meet the only Koalas in England. I think she has done so well and is a true little hero to Koalas and I can't wait to reward her with the visit.

Folksworth Pre-School Well what a year, between building work on the village hall and the new homes next door to Clovid19 it has been a busy year. Yet we look forward, bring plans together for a fantastic September term with the children as always at the core of everything we do. The plan to offer a full provision are in place, as we start to consider summer holidays, yes I know it seems odd to be considering this now, however, returning to life prior to Covid is happening. It won’t be long until the lazy long summer is done and we move into the autumn term, changing colours on the fields, busy farms and the harvest will bring new things to learn, new children starting at the preschool and the progression of our current children onto primary school. All these tell of positivity in change and new beginnings, we keep this thought as we finish the last few days of an academic term none of us could have predicted. Let’s all go into the summer break to recharge, refocus and prepare for the autumn term with positivity and hope. We currently have spaces for the Autumn term. If you like the idea of a small, community preschool, please contact Niki on 07542 172075 to arrange a visit. re ca rs ild che ed Ch ou ept v cc a

cookwise Frying pan pizza

Welcome to ...

Yes really – it’s so good! Preparation time: Rise 2-5 days (yes this takes a little forward preparation but it’s so worth it.)

These really are the next best thing to a pizza from a pizza oven or a proper pizzeria.

Cooking time: 5 minutes + 35 mins Makes 4 pan-sized pizzas

Method

IMPORTANT - You cannot use a non-stick frying pan for this recipe. It has to be a cast iron pan or skillet.

 Mix the flour, yeast, salt, and sugar then stir in 325ml water to a smooth dough. Cover and put in the fridge for two to four days. Remember rapid yeast will activate faster and may only require two days, or even one if you’re in more of a hurry.

Ingredients

 Tip on to a lightly floured surface. Divide into four roughly equal portions, shape into balls, cover and leave for two hours.

Base 500g Strong white bread flour (But if you have any Italian 00 flour, it’s is even better).

 While the dough is rising take the cheese and toppings out of the fridge so that they come to room temperature.

1½ tsp dried active yeast. I did not have this throughout lockdown and used rapid dried yeast instead. I found that the rise time was quicker (2 days vs 4 days) so this might actually be a bonus.

 Empty the tomatoes into a saucepan over a medium heat and simmer for about 30 minutes, until they form a thick sauce. Season this to taste with salt and a pinch of sugar.  Once the dough has proved, flatten it into pizza bases to fit your pan. For reference my pan has a 26cm base. Heat the cast iron frying pan or skillet over a moderate-high heat. It’s ready when you drop a little water into the base and it instantly hisses and bounces. Preheat the grill to between moderate and high.

1 tsp table salt 1 tsp sugar Topping 1 400g tin chopped plum tomatoes

A.B'S BBQ SHACK We are a newly opened takeaway/delivery based in Yaxley called A.B's BBQ Shack. We are located at the back of the Duck and Drake pub. We use fresh meats that are rubbed, marinaded and smoked for up to 12 hours on our offset smoker using traditional methods of charcoal and various blends of wood including oak, apple wood, hickory and many others. We have handpressed burgers, steak and ale pie, barbecue boxes (including family boxes) amongst a number of other options including meals suitable for vegetarians. On weekends we have a breakfast menu aswell as a roast on Sundays. You can pre-order via our facebook page or

you can call 07516 492539 We are open Wednesday - Friday 12pm-9pm Saturday 8am-9pm and Sundays 9am-6pm. Delivery in Yaxley is free on orders over £10 . We also deliver to the surrounding areas give us a call to find out if we deliver to you. Fancy a day out? You can find us on Facebook so give the page a like for fresh updates and all of our offers. We would also like to thank everybody who has suporrted us through the last couple of months during these difficult times.

 Lightly flour your hands then stretch the dough into a rough round, keeping the edges a bit thicker. Cook in the pan until the top starts to dry out then add some tomato sauce and mozzarella. Wait a minute before adding any other toppings. Leave in the pan until base begins to char. The first time I chickened out but as I got into the groove the subsequent pizzas were much better. When you’re happy with the bottom switch the pan to under the grill until the cheese bubbles and the edges brown. Finish with a few basil leaves.

1 pack buffalo mozzarella 1 bunch basil Extra-virgin olive oil, to drizzle Plain is great but you can add any toppings you like. We made Pepperoni, ham and sweetcorn, and ham and pineapple.

staysafe Ensure post lockdown doorstep scammers don’t give you the summertime blues Overthe past few months, the COVID-19 lock down has halted life for so many people – not least the doorstep rogue traders. However, as the restrictions continue to be eased, the fraudsters have once again begun to make life a misery for the elderly and the vulnerable, who are being caught off guard by Coronavirus scammers. Many people have been waiting weeks and weeks to have their windows cleaned, garden spruced up, property exterior painted or driveway re-paved. But we would warn those hasty to have the work they desire so much to be carried out to simply stop and ask the professionals – even if it means waiting just a little longer. With so many rogue traders looking to cash in on people’s new-found freedom, it can be tempting to agree to work being offered. Whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted to give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision; they can be very persuasive. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is.

Common reports include:  Taking a deposit and never returning to do the work  Quoting a price and then increasing the cost as the job progresses  No statutory cancellation notices (cooling off period - see below), guarantees or warranties provided  Produce poor quality work and refuse to sort out problems or finish the work Avoiding Rogue Traders Advice:  Be cautious; if a trader knocks at your door, do not agree to on the spot house repairs without taking advice. Say 'no thank you' and close the door.  Be wary of special offers. They will use tactics such as 'I am only in your area today and would need to do the work now'.  Do not believe when told that guttering, roofing, gardening or paving work is in need of urgent repair – this may cause you to panic and allow the work to take place.  Don't allow anyone to pressure you into agreeing to have work carried out. If you ask them to leave and they don't, they are committing a criminal offence - contact the police on 999.  Do not make snap decisions. If you feel that any work needs carrying out on your property, take time to talk to family or neighbours before you make a decision.  Don't ever go to a bank or cash point with a trader; legitimate traders would never do this! If you are in the market for a new driveway or patio or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson, like the members of Safe Local Trades.

C the Benefits

Vitamin C – beauty miracle or myth?

It had been many weeks since I ventured into a shop. I was looking for moisturiser as I'd burned through all the halffinished pots and tubes I'd been using throughout lockdown. I was curious to see the number of vitamin C-related products which I'd not noticed previously. Vitamin C seems to be all the rage right now. I wondered what the science said. Vitamin C is actually a powerful antioxidant. This means that it's great for repairing damage done by free radicals. In reality this equates to sun-damage, for example uneven skin pigmentation, sunspots, and fine lines, but also the inflammatory pigmentation which can be left behind by acne. Pure vitamin C is actually an acid (ascorbic acid). There are many scientific peerreviewed studies which conclude that it is extremely effective. Unfortunately, it also has some substantial drawbacks. In order for it to be absorbed into the skin its pH has to be around 3, which is really quite acidic! This can cause skin irritation in some people. Vitamin C is very unstable in its pure form and breaks down quickly to erythrulose (an ingredient in fake tan) so long-term use can stain your fingers and face. It also develops an unpleasant smell as it degrades, and products often smell 'off' before they are used up. Because of these issues cosmetic manufacturers tend to favour vitamin C derivatives in their products. To make a derivative the ascorbic acid molecule is altered by adding other chemicals. The resulting compound is more stable but the pay-off is that it's now less effective. Any of the following listed on a product label are vitamin C derivatives. Ascorbyl palmitate Ascorbyl glucosine Magnesium ascorbyl palmitate Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate Calcium ascorbate Sodium ascorbate Sodium acorbyl phosphate L ascorbic acid

With the summer sun bright in the sky at the time of writing, now might be the perfect time to try out the benefits and C for yourself. C what I did there?

By Louise Addison

Studies have found that the most stable derivatives are fat soluble rather than water soluble so look for preparations that contain: L-ascorbic acid Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate Sodium ascorbyl phosphate Ascorbyl glucoside These derivatives will be more effective because they remain stable at a more neutral pH (5-6) so are less likely to irritate your skin, and they will have sufficient contact time with your skin because they won't decompose quickly causing the characteristic staining and odour. Instead they slowly convert back into ascorbic acid, giving a gradual release effect. There is some debate about the effectiveness of vitamin C products. They have been shown to protect skin against UV in a clinical study on humans, and vitamin C has been found to stimulate collagen synthesis and reduce pigment production in in vitro cell studies, though bear in mind that performance in a test tube does not necessarily equate to performance in real life. Studies also seem to suggest that Vitamin C is also more stable and more effective when combined in a product with vitamin E. The two antioxidants seem to work synergistically, a wonderful word which means they interact in such a way that each helps the action of the other.

The dangers of grass seeds to your pets Grass seeds are a common problem during the spring and summer months. While your pet explores the outdoors, grass seed can easily brush off the tops of long grass stems onto their bodies. If left untreated, grass seeds can cause a variety of problems. These problems range across the spectrum from minor irritation to conditions that require surgery. Grass seeds carry bacteria which can cause an infection if the skin of your pet is affected.

include scratching, sneezing, head shaking or discharge from the eyes or nose. Prevention is the best cure

Symptoms

Try to keep your pet away from long grassy areas since the seeds can catch onto their coat, skin or toes very easily. If you take your pet outdoors for a walk, check their fur for any grass seeds when you get home. The typical areas to check are eyes, ears, nose, armpits and their toes – which is where the seeds often get lodged. Keep long-haired dogs trimmed or clipped and well-groomed, especially around their feet and ears.

You pet could experience different symptoms depending on what part of the body is affected. Look out for swelling, hair matting, limping and irritation. Additional signs can

If you are concerned that your pet may have picked up a grass seed please get in touch. The earlier grass seeds are caught, the less damage they can do.

An untreated infection may spread, or the seed can cause severe internal damage as it travels through the body. Unfortunately, if the seed breaches the skin, surgery is often required to find the grass seed, along with the use of antibiotics and antifungals for treatment.

gardenview Most people find the sound of water relaxing. The benefits of 'blue space' – the sea, rivers, lakes, canals and waterfalls, have been studied, and found to be psychologically restorative; associated with increased sense of well-being, lower levels of stress and mental illness, lower blood pressure, and higher levels of vitamin D. In short, being by water is good for body and mind. Can we replicate this in our gardens?

The presence of water in the garden can transform a space into a natural haven of calm, and provide a focal point. Running water in a garden produces negative ions which are known to increase serotonin production in the brain. Serotonin is the chemical that elevates our mood and relaxes us. There are many ways to introduce water into a smaller space, including natural look ponds and waterfalls, but you don't need a deep ornamental pond; you can create a small pond in a container, or create a toddler and pet-friendly pebble pond, or install a modern water feature which uses reflective surfaces that bounce light around, creating movement and life in the tiniest space. Any water source will attract a wide range of wildlife. I have a metallic sphere water feature on my patio that seems to be a magnet for dragonflies, which are a delight to watch. A shallow beached area or

Well-being and water

pebble pool will attract bathing birds, and also frogs and toads, which can shelter, breed, and stay out of sight of potential predators. You may even attract a hedgehog or two. They enjoy shallow pools with sloped edges, so they can drink and bathe without falling in. A small barrel or container pond will allow algae to grow which will attract water invertebrates including snails, pond skaters and water boatmen. Kids love water so introducing a pond is a great way to encourage them to learn about local wildlife while having fun. Safety is crucial though; if you have young children it might be better to wait until they are older before creating a large pond, as it will require constant supervision. A pebble pool with a small fountain effect provides all the sound and fun of water with none of the depth, and a large trug or half barrel can be transformed into a tiny wildlife pond. If you do create a pond, position it where it

can be seen from the house, make sure the edges slope gently, and fence it off while the children are young. Planting around water features is half the fun. The water forget-me-not, Myosotis scorpioides is perfect for growing in shallow water or in the muddy area at the edge of ponds. It has pretty blue flowers in late spring and attracts newts, which lay their eggs on the leaves. Irises and grasses look lovely planted around any water features and you can even find a tiny lily - Nymphaea 'Pygmaea Alba' white - for small ponds, which has the bonus of being heavily scented. Water features in a garden are no longer the preserve of the rich, with acres to spare. Even if you only have a tiny balcony you can now enjoy the sight and sound of water in your outside space.
