COMMUNITY NEWS

Cats Protection Peterborough Branch During the last 30 years we have worked within the PE1 to PE8 area rescuing stray and abandoned cats. We also try to take in cats whose owners can no longer look after them. Over the last few years the numbers of abandoned cats has risen dramatically. We run an assisted neutering scheme to help people on benefits and pensions to have their cats neutered at a low cost. A female cat can get pregnant at six months old and in five years can be responsible for 50,000 descendants. Our records show that we have found new homes for more than 10,000 cats and helped to neuter many more in those 30 years. Each year a number of stray cats with kittens are reported to us. Often these kittens don’t appear or are not reported until they are too old for us to take in and socialise for rehoming as a pet. As a result of this semi-feral cat colonies in the city are on the increase. We help out by trapping, neutering and returning these cats to their site. Many of the cats which come to us are ill or in poor condition. We have fosterers who look after them until they are well enough to be homed. Many who have been found living on the streets are not used to being handled so the fosterers

get them used to human company too. All cats are neutered, inoculated, wormed and deflead before they are rehomed. Our adoption fee is £55 for adult cats. Our work is self funding and we have a group of volunteers who run stalls at various venues and fayres across Peterborough to raise funds. We also hold fundraising events ourselves. Our key messages are: •

Adopt your cat with confidence from an established charity. Private sales encourage owners to breed their cats purely for monetary gain

Neuter your cat, there are plenty of rescue cats waiting to be adopted

Report stray cats and kittens at the earliest opportunity

May bulletin from Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service

Take it to the tip – don’t burn it

Spring is here and lots of households are clearing out, sprucing up the garden and carrying out DIY.

The majority of Cambridgeshire’s residents take extra rubbish, old furniture and garden waste to their local waste and recycling centre. However, our crews are still getting called to households and businesses that are choosing have a bonfire instead. We’re urging you to avoid burning waste and instead dispose of it responsibly. If you do decide to have a bonfire, please make sure you follow these essential tips to avoid a visit from the fire service: •

Check the weather – never light bonfires in windy conditions.

Don’t leave bonfires unattended.

Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedge.

• Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. • Before you light the bonfire, check that children and animals are not hiding inside and are a safe distance away. Make sure fire safety still stays at the forefront of your mind in May – and don’t forget to test your smoke alarm and the smoke alarms of the vulnerable and elderly in your neighbourhood.

For info, news & safety advice, find us on Twitter, Facebook & Instagram or visit www.cambsfire.gov.uk

COMMUNITY NEWS

Greetings from Cardea Spring has arrived at last and the sun is shining (at time of writing this). Let’s hope it’s the start of a good summer! I also hope that you all had a lovely, peaceful Easter. Before the weather changed, a handful of intrepid residents took part in the Community Clean Up Day on March 21st. Despite almost gale force winds and an icy chill, we cleaned up 40 plus bags of litter with the support of local councillors Brian Rush & Chris York, along with Council Leader Marco Cereste. We plan to repeat this litter pick in the summer holidays, getting the children involved in tidying their community and sharing a picnic after. Thanks to Switch Electrics for sponsoring our community high Vis vests which were worn during the litter pick too. We had a special visitor for our first Cardea Easter Egg Hunt when the Easter Bunny hopped in to hand out prizes and join in the fun with over 130 children. It was a great afternoon in the sunshine and we were very lucky to have the use of St Michael’s

Samaritans

Church School and also the very kind donation of chocolate eggs from Morrison’s to help us put on this event so a big ‘thank you’ to both.

Cuts in many services can leave people wondering where they can turn when they are going through difficult times.

Our self-defence classes for women are to run for four weeks in April and May. Hopefully, they will be a success as the women of Cardea learn new skills and gain confidence while having fun. I’ll report back in the next issue.

Yet Samaritans continues to do what it has done for the last sixty years – to promise that there will be someone on hand, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A service available for anyone in emotional distress. And that someone at the other end of the phone is a volunteer whose role is to do nothing more and nothing less than to listen.

I’m now starting to plan the summer play days for local families. As we had such a good turnout for the Easter Egg Hunt, I’m thinking about activities to cover all ages and also looking for a team of helpers. If anyone’s interested in lending a hand, please get in touch via Facebook. Take care of yourselves and each other and hope to see you all soon! Kate Ferris and the CRA.

“I’m not an expert counsellor – none of us are – but we aim to help people look at their options rather than tell them what to do,” says Ian, who runs Peterborough Samaritan’s training programme. While new recruits worry that they ‘won’t know what to say’, these fears are allayed through a ten-week course common to all Samaritans branches. Coming from all walks of life, the qualities that unite the volunteers are acceptance, understanding and empathy. “The power of such human contact is amazing” states Branch Director Dave, “and we are looking for new Samaritans to let us continue delivering this remarkable service”. If you’d like to be there to listen, then you can attend the information mornings (held at 10am on the last Sunday of each month at 32 - 34 St Johns Street, Peterborough), or call John on: 07729 897135

Stanground Feast, remembering times past ‘Celebration of Times Past’ at St John the Baptist Stanground Saturday 27th June. Festival Service on Sunday 28th June at 10.30 with A specially formed choir. For generations the Feast of St John the Baptist on or around 24th June was one of the most important days of the year for the people of Stanground. On Feast Sunday there would be a huge parade of bands and local groups ending in the church, and after that in the Vicarage gardens. On the Monday and Tuesday there were displays, stalls and shows, skittling for a pig and various other events. There used to be a public tea, sometimes followed by dancing on the lawn and the local pubs stayed open long hours and did a roaring trade. In 1906 it was recorded that 1,250 people attended the event! More recently the date has been marked by a church fete and flower festival which has also been extremely popular over the years.

Times have changed as so the way we celebrate The Stanground Feast is changing too. This year we are planning to open the church for an exhibition remembering times past in Stanground on the last weekend of June. This is where we need your help. Do you have any interesting photos of the church and the village? Photos of the Feast would be especially interesting and would any video footage, old programmes or press cuttings. The church will be open on Wed 3rd June and Saturday 6th and 13th June to receive items for the exhibition, or

CHOIR, REUNION - COME AND SING! If you used to sing in St John’s choir, or if you enjoy singing and would like to come and sing for a one off, there will be a rehearsal on Sat 27th June and the reunited choir will sing for the Feast on Sunday morning at 10.30. More details on this event in next month’s Gazette.

Local estate agency celebrates successful first year!

Hampton’s newest estate agency is going from strength to strength. Delivering competitive rates and first class service, Regal Park brings customers 25 years of local property market experience. Director James Trigg told the Gazette: “Buying or selling your home is such an important time, and we’re delighted to have so many happy customers after our first year in business.

“I think our success is due to our competitive fees, and we also include

free 3D floor plans as standard, which are brilliant for helping buyers visualise the properties they view online. “Our highly experienced team also keeps customers up-to- date at every stage using SMS text and e-mail updates. “We’re based in Hampton, which is a hub of activity with so many new properties and a growing population, although our expertise extends to the rest of Peterborough and surrounding areas too.

It’s been a fantastic first year. As well as selling lots of properties we’ve also worked in partnership with both Barratt Homes and Persimmon, which has been very exciting – and we’re looking forward to an even better year in 2015!”

MONEY MATTERS

by Pete Bird, Bird & Co Certified Public Accountants

Do you have any tax or business questions, please email Pete Bird of Bird & Co info@birdnco.co.uk and if of general interest, it will be published here!

Question: I am self-employed and pay class 2 and class 4 NIC and understand that how these are paid is changing? Answer: Yes Class 2 NIC is changing. Self-employed people pay class 2 NIC, usually by monthly direct debit. Where profits are low it has been possible to apply for an exception certificate, so you don’t need to pay. From 6 April 2015, all this changed. Key points are:  You no longer need to apply for an exception from paying class 2 National Insurance due to low self-employed profits. If your profits are below the Small Profit Threshold (£5,965 for 2015-16), you simply won’t be asked to pay.  Any class 2 NIC that is due will be calculated when you send in your 2015-16 tax return. It will be added to your self-assessment tax bill.  If you pay class 2 NIC, but are not in self-assessment (e.g you work full-time abroad), HMRC should contact you to make arrangements for continuing to pay class 2.

HMRC Property Let Campaign: In recent years, many people have become “accidental landlords” when they have moved house and been unable to sell their previous home. Fewer than 500,000 taxpayers are registered with HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) as owning a second property, yet HMRC believes that the true number of British landlords may be as high as 1.5 million. It concludes that as many as a million individuals may not be declaring their property income and gains. Following the recent success of HMRC’s property sales campaign, which ended in September 2013, the let property campaign was launched. If you have taken out a mortgage in recent years, you may be paying high rates of interest and may not be making a profit on letting your property after expenses. Whether you make a profit or loss, you need to inform HMRC of your activity and file a return. You must also consider tax exposure in relation to the sale of any properties that were not used solely as your main residence. Failure to do so can lead to interest and penalties. We can assist you with making a disclosure to HMRC of previously undisclosed rental income and/or capital gains. We will, of course, seek to maximise your tax deductible expenditure and will make all possible claims for reliefs.

Dates to remember 1 May 2015 Due date for Corporation tax for companies with an accounting period ended 31 July 2014. 19 May 2015 Due date for PAYE and NIC deductions due for month ended 5 May 2015. (If you pay your tax electronically the due date is 22 May 2015.) 19 May 2015 Filing deadline for the CIS300 monthly return for the month ended 5 May 2015. 19 May 2015 Due date for CIS tax deducted for the month ended 5 May 2015. 31 May 2015 Latest date for employers to issue P60’s for the tax year ended 5 April 2015. Sue Ryder Cafe

Thorpe Hall sits at the heart of the community it serves and that ethos is one we are thrilled to see mirrored in the Cafe which is becoming a place where community groups can meet, a place for all the family and one where customers know that while they are enjoying delicious cakes and coffee, their money is going to an excellent cause. We already have excellent support for Thorpe Hall Hospice within the Stanground community. Our shop, just next door to the Cafe, is very well established and has become a real go-to for people in the area keen to grab a bargain. It is also very well supported in terms of donations so we knew people were already aware of Thorpe Hall, the work we do and the value of their support.

LEGAL

Spice-up e u c e b r a b your Common Law Marriage

TRUTH OR MYTH?

Today many couples choose to live together before marriage and sometimes never marry. Many people believe in a “Common Law Marriage” – but it is a myth. Couples who live together do not acquire the same rights and legal responsibilities towards each other as those couples who choose to marry. However, difficulties can arise if they later separate as there is no automatic right to be supported or housed by the other – even if this was the case during the relationship. There is no law to rely on to obtain financial support from an ex partner (except for the children). These difficulties can be avoided by preparing a Living Together Agreement setting out what the assets were when the couple met and how they intend these and any future assets to be divided if they separate. Anyone thinking of cohabiting or already cohabiting should obtain some advice. Equally those thinking of marriage should consider a PreNuptial Agreement. Abby Smith of Woolley & Co Solicitors always approaches such matters in a sensitive but proactive way in the hope of assisting clients to reach a swift, amicable agreement but which best protects their needs now and in the future. Abby Smith has many years’ experience in dealing with such issues and is an accredited specialist in this field.

FOOD & DRINK

When it comes to unshakable optimism concerning our summer weather, we Brits are undisputed champions of the world! Our misguided belief that we’ll be blessed with wall-to-wall sunshine is encouraged by garden centres throughout the land. Even before the daffodils are out, they’re tempting us with lavish displays of patio furniture complemented by a vast array of barbecues, from tin-foil disposables to state-of-the-art jobs that look as though they require a pilot’s licence.

It has to be said that at the merest hint of some de cent weather, the majority of us love nothing more than ‘sli nging a shrimp on the barbie’ . But if it does rain on your parad e, you can always opt for a su per-hot grill or griddle pan.

One of the secrets to tasty, succulent barbecue fare is a good marinade. Mix the ingredients together in a screw-topped jar and shake well. Place the meat or fish in a bowl, pour over the marinade and ensure everything is thoroughly coated. Cover with cling film and marinate for at least an hour in the fridge (or better still overnight) to allow the flavours to permeate.

Barbecue Marinade 1 Char-grilled food needs really good, punchy seasoning, so the following recipes incorporate plenty of herbs and spices. The first is our family favourite – a versatile barbecue marinade that can be used for pretty much anything and everything: 3 tbs of sunflower oil 3 tbsp white wine vinegar 2 tbsp soy sauce or gluten-free Tamari 1 tbsp Chinese five-spice powder 2 tbsp tomato ketchup 1 tbsp honey 3-5 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp ginger paste With Chinese five-spice powder and soy sauce in the mix, spare ribs are the obvious candidates, but mushrooms also taste amazing prepared this way. Toss whole mushrooms and chunks of red and yellow pepper in the marinade, then skewer; for vegetarian guests, use Quorn fillets or Haloumi cheese too. If there are any leftovers (doubtful) they taste great eaten cold the next day.

Piri Piri Sauce Next up is that Portuguese classic, Piri Piri sauce. Piri Piri is another name for the fiery African Birds Eye chilli which gives the dish its name; you can adjust the amount of chillies according to taste (or use a milder variety), but the spicy heat really brings out the best in char-grilled chicken thighs ... think Nando’s! 5-10 Birds Eye or other red chillies, chopped 100ml olive oil 50ml red wine vinegar 3-5 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tbsp tomato puree 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp dried thyme or oregano (or 3 tbsp fresh) Plenty of freshly milled salt & pepper Gently fry the chopped chillies and garlic in a little of the oil. Add the paprika and stir for 30 seconds. Add the rest of the ingredients and simmer for five minutes. Allow to cool, then use as above.

Barbecue Marinade 2 The third marinade is ideal for more delicately flavoured food, such as fish, Quorn and tofu, but also chicken or lamb kebabs. Simply mix two parts of olive oil to one part of lemon juice and add salt, black pepper, plenty of crushed garlic and loads of chopped fresh herbs. Tarragon tastes great with fish and chicken, and thyme also adds fragrance without being overpowering. For lamb kebabs, rosemary with bay leaves and a few crushed juniper berries make the perfect choice.

HOME & GARDEN

THE GOOD LIFE?

Start your own herb garden From Hamlet’s Ophelia to Jamie Oliver’s kitchen, herbs have been used for savour and health. Get started on growing your own on any outside space. In this country herbs have been cultivated for more than two thousand of years and with today’s emphasis on natural foods, remedies and beauty products, they’re more popular than ever. Herbs are fairly easy to grow, will sprout in containers on a patio, in window boxes, even in hanging baskets and they are a pretty, fragrant addition to your outside space. Stand herb-filled pots outside the kitchen door or on a windowsill for easy access. Here are some top tips to get you going with your herb garden

Getting Started Herbs can be grown from seeds, plants or cuttings. Any method will produce plants but buying ready-grown herbs will give you a head start, make an instant impact and be useable from day one. Make sure you buy from a reputable garden centre and not from a supermarket. They’re sold for instant use and won’t last long. Rosemary, thyme, sage, tarragon and bay grow well from plants. Cultivating seeds gives an extra sense of satisfaction as you watch them peeping through the compost, and it’s a much more economical method. You’ll get plenty of stock from one packet of seeds but growing this way is more labour intensive as you’ll have to remember to keep the soil moisture at the right level. During the early spring months seeds should be sown indoors in seed trays or small pots. A greenhouse or windowsill will do. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, they can be thinned and transferred to larger containers. When there’s no threat of

Here comes spring! Are you ready for those sunny, lazy days? Maybe it’s time for a new fence, patio, or driveway...

frost in the early summer (you hope!), seedlings can be moved or seeds sown outside. The packet will give instructions on when and how often to sow. Rocket, coriander, parsley and chives grow particularly well from seed. You can take your own cuttings from other plants to start your own. They should be taken in the spring before stems become too woody. Snip off a piece about 3 or 4 inches long from the side shoots of a healthy plant. If possible, cut on a joint and remove all but three or four leaves. Planted in good quality compost in a warm, sunny spot, the cutting should grow well.

Best for container gardening

Best for a border or bed

Containers come in a multitude of sizes, materials, shapes and colours. Anything from a terracotta urn or window box to an old chimney pot or sink will do, as long as it has good drainage. Try your local reclamation yard for ideas or forage through a few skips (but always ask before you take anything).

Larger herbs like lovage, angelica (both can grow to 6ft) and fennel are best suited to borders and beds. They grow too tall and need too much root space for containers. When planning your border or bed, think about what you?d like to grow and why; do you want height, colour, smell, practicality or all of above? And check the soil type before starting. Testing kits cost about £1 and give a pretty accurate result.

Drill holes in the base if a container doesn’t have them already. Fill the bottom with cracked pots or polystyrene pieces. Most herbs will grow well in window boxes as well as containers; sage and rosemary are particularly suited but lavender, chives, parsley, thyme, marjoram and French tarragon will flourish too. A traditional strawberry pot with pockets in the side looks stunning with a selection of herbs bursting through the holes. Parsley, chives, thyme, coriander, basil and creeping rosemary will all grow in baskets. Some herbs are best-suited to a hot, sunny spot on the windowsill or in the garden. But it’s a myth that they all are. Thyme, sage, mint, chives and oregano (among others) love a sunny spot; the warmth brings their natural oils to the surface of the leaves and enhances flavour. But parsley, chervil, salad rocket and coriander prefer partial shade. This produces softer leaves with a more subtle taste.

Facebook “f ” Logo

CMYK / .eps

Facebook “f ” Logo

Plant the tallest herbs at the back and smaller ones towards the front. The labels on pots or seed packets should tell you how big they?ll grow. Plant your herb garden in a relatively sunny spot, preferably next to a table and chairs so you can take in the wonderful aroma while sipping a glass of wine on a warm evening.

Growing tips To keep your plants healthy and growing in a pleasant shape, pick the leaves from healthy plants on a regular basis. This also encourages new growth. The best time is the early morning. You can dry or freeze herbs when they?ve been harvested and keep them for use during the winter months, but they must be done so quickly to preserve the rich flavours.

LOCAL SCHOOLS UPDATES

St John’s Primary Mrs Jango, one of the parents at St John’s School in Stanground, kindly volunteered to paint a welcoming mural at the entrance of our school. We’ve since received so many comments saying how friendly and welcoming it makes our school feel, we thought we’d share it with you all, via the Stanground Gazette and asked Mrs Jago to put together a few words. She writes:

From a young age, I’ve been very interested in anything to do with art – drawing, painting and making things. I just love it. I now have 4 children who share my love of art and we’re always painting and making things.

y

As the children go to Stanground St John’s Primary School, I decided that I would speak to the teachers and see if it would be possible to share my skills and give something back to the school. I worked together with the Head, Mrs Sally Williams, and that is where we came up with the mural idea. I’m extremely happy with how it turned out! It fits amazingly; it’s very clear and smart.”

Herward Cup winners

U12 Reds - Pumas savour cup success!

A very proud day for Pumas – The match programme read “.... Park Farm Pumas was founded by Ciaran McAuley in April 2010 on the principal that Pumas would always be “..... a club formed to act as a vehicle for children of all footballing abilities enabling them to take part in physical activity that will provide them with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills such as teamwork, sportsmanship, fair play, respect and discipline. At the same time taking part in fun, playful sporting activities with their friends in a safe and controlled environment.”

Park Farm Pumas. Everyone at the club is so very proud of what this young side has achieved this year. I would like to say a personal thank you to the players, coach Justin and all the parents that have supported this team through thick and thin. Here’s to further success next season!!

The club started with a small group of players attending sessions at a local primary school – Heritage Park Primary and has now grown into 12 PJAL league teams, an U6 Academy and over 150 children coming through the doors of our little club every week. This U12 squad you see here today have battled with adversity and challenge to their very existence as a team over the last couple of seasons. So to see the ongoing development of these guys not just as footballers but as superb young people is an extremely proud moment for everyone connected with Park Farm Pumas. Win or lose today we believe our guys have brought something great to our club and this competition and I would like to thank coach Justin for all his hard work and guidance over the last couple of seasons. I’d also like to say a huge thank you and well done to all the players and parents for their efforts and support of our club philosophies. Enjoy the day and best of luck to both teams in today’s game.”

It’s very true, these boys have had challenges, coaching let downs, players leaving, depressing results, but all of this has brought this fabulous young group together under Coach Justin and galvanised them this season into a strong groups of young footballers. So much so that they have moved through this year’s Hereward cup competition with some superb performances against some very credible teams. This is the clubs first PJAL trophy and hopefully the first of many with our U10 Black side in the cup semi final for the 3rd year running. Indeed, a great milestone for the

STANGROUND BLOG

I was thinking... Today, I stepped outside of the house after work. There’s nothing particularly remarkable about that, I’m sure many of you do that almost daily. However, on this occasion, I was wearing a t-shirt (obviously, I also had trousers on) and I was able to stand outside for more than a few seconds without freezing to death. It’s warming up! There have been a few clues throughout this year warning us of warmer weather on the way. The days have been getting longer, causing me to think I’ve overslept for work each morning. Annoyingly, this also causes more glare on my TV each evening as I hide myself away from the sun; you don’t maintain a pale white physique like mine without a bit of hard work. The hedgehogs have also decided to wake up; this wouldn’t normally bother me, I actually quite enjoy the way they shuffle around the garden and how they make excellent decorations for an otherwise bland and uninteresting road. The thing that bothers me is how they scuttle up and down my garden at 3 in the morning, setting off all the lights that normally only catch cats being shifty. Honestly, I see a few most nights, I’m now fairly certain that my garden has become a local hedgehog hook up site (a hogging site if you will). At least they’re not as noisy as cats and foxes. They do less damage to the bins too. I can’t wait until it properly warms up though, if anyone actually pays attention to what I write each month you might remember I bought a pedal bike. I’m optimistic if the weather warms up to an appropriate level, that bike will actually get used and I can have all the fun of dodging loose dogs in Ferry Meadows, Crown Lakes and pretty much everywhere else in Peterborough. On a ride out the other week, in one trip I nearly ran over a cat, a dog and a dog chasing a cat. All separate incidents. I also nearly hit an old couple who wandered obliviously down the cycle path in front of me, then both went to different sides of it when they finally noticed me. Honestly some people deserve to be hit with a bike.

Commutes to work a becoming more fun as well, no longer do I have to face a freezing tempest outside each day, right now I only need to wear a jumper underneath my motorbike jacket, a big difference from the multiple layers under my waterproofs I’ve been used to for the past few months. Soon it will just be my work shirt and tie, which will slowly strangle me the further I ride. One day I’ll have the sense to take it off. Anyway, thats enough for this month, theres a pub beer garden calling my name. Enjoy the sun! by Jack Moakes

PET CARE

With the warmer weather inviting us outside, this is a great time to have fun with your dog, but the transition from spring to summer requires some adjustments for dogs and owners alike, so here are some things to take into consideration now that spring has sprung. A bird in the paw Spring heralds the return of the songbirds, and hatching eggs throughout the neighborhood and nearby parks. For these birds and their fledglings, pets pose a serious threat. Most dogs are not quite as adept at killing birds as cats are, however, they gain great pleasure from the thrill of the chase. Dogs are carnivores, so the ultimate aim is to catch and kill. Training your dog not to attack birds will help. It might sound obvious, but letting your dog near birds when it is hungry can be asking for trouble.

Allergies Just like their owners, dogs can get springtime allergies. Pollen from the first flowering trees, dandelions and tulips, dust, mold and even insects can cause allergic reactions. Canine allergy medicines are effective; your vet can prescribe the safest dose.

Safety in the garden Selecting plants that are safe for dogs will go a long way in preventing toxicities from occurring. Keep in mind

Facebook “f ” Logo

CMYK / .eps

Facebook “f ” Logo

that some dogs can enjoy digging as much as we do so avoid planting toxic bulbs such as hyacinths, tulips, daffodils and certain lilies. Fertilizers and mulch can be toxic as well so store them in an inaccessible area like a shed when not in use and do not allow your dog in the garden area.

Mosquitoes Depending on where you live mosquitoes start becoming more active. Generally heartworm preventative medication should be given year round to prevent infection. The cost of heartworm preventative medication is a bargain when compared to how much it costs to treat heartworm disease.

Ticks and fleas Ticks and fleas become more prevalent as well. There are a variety of products available to combat these nuisances, so ask your vet which one is best for your dog. Start early as preventing ticks and fleas from becoming a problem is far easier than dealing with a major flea infestation and get into the habit of regularly checking your dog for ticks.

Spring is a good time to check that your dog’s vaccinations are up to date. Your dog is exposed to more infectious diseases during this time of year. Instances of kennel cough can rise in the spring because of increasing dog-todog contact.

Bee and wasp stings Dogs are curious. They love to run and chase things including insects, which in some cases protect themselves by stinging the dog. Multiple stings are dangerous. Most of the time, an insect sting is just painful and irritating for your dog. Getting stung several times, or stung inside the mouth or throat, is dangerous and requires a trip to the vet. Watch for allergic reactions. A severe reaction can be caused by a large number of stings or by an allergic reaction. If your dog is having a severe reaction, you need to take the dog to a vet immediately.

Spring cleaning hazards With spring generally comes spring cleaning. Be aware that many household cleaning products are harmful to dogs so follow instructions as posted on the label and store all chemicals out of reach when not in use.

BUSINESS FOCUS

Spotlessly devoted to you! Spotless Interiors is a rapidly expanding, client focussed, domestic and commercial cleaning business based in Yaxley. Lisa Richardson

Spotless Interiors started life in 2011 and is run by Lisa and Rob Richardson, employing 8 members of staff (the team is growing by the week!), covering the whole of the Peterborough area. They can provide regular or one-off cleans, ironing services, decluttering and also services tailored for the commercial client. In the coming year they will be further expanding the commercial cleaning ‘arm’ of the business, so watch this space! Spotless Interiors are incredibly proud to be the first domestic cleaning company in Peterborough to become accredited members of Safe Local Trades and you can read reviews on their work on the Safe Local Trades website

which clearly demonstrates that in many cases what it provides goes far beyond a basic cleaning service, with a friendly, approachable nature, attention to detail and the ability to remain flexible to the clients’ requirements. For some, seeing the same person each week, getting to know their cleaner as someone they feel comfortable having in their house, is as important as receiving an excellent cleaning service. Spotless Interiors guarantee a professional clean or de-clutter, with the same individual person each visit. It is committed to growing as a business and to continually supporting the needs of staff and clients alike.

Over half of people over 65 have been targeted by fraudsters say Age UK by Eileen Le Voi

A new Age UK survey has found that 53% of older people (aged 65+) believe they have been targeted by fraudsters. While that many do not respond - of those who do, 70% of all age groups said that they had personally lost money. The survey of over 1000 people by Age UK also revealed that a third of older people who responded to a scam may have lost £1,000 or more. Half of those over 65 said that they had received a phone, call, text or letter that they believe to have been part of a scam and over percent of them said that they hadn’t reported it. The report from Age UK highlights the tactics used by fraudsters, including befriending or `grooming’ potential victims and isolating them from friends and family, the use of seemingly professional documentation and official-looking websites, impersonating a bank or the police and even threats and intimidation. With the new pension freedoms that came into force this April 2015, the Charity is warning that people over 55, who will now have access to large pots of pension savings, are likely to be increasingly targeted by fraudsters carrying out a whole range of scams seeking to exploit people’s interest in the change in law, for example by enticing them to move their cash into bogus, unregulated investments or other forms

of scams. The Charity warns that being the victim of a scam can have serious consequences for people’s physical and mental health, as well as their relationships and finances. Some victims’ health deteriorates quickly after a scam and in the worst cases has even resulted in older people losing their independence and needing residential care. Age UK is currently working with Action Fraud as well as other agencies to increase awareness of fraud and cyber crime and the levels of sophistication involved, so that people feel equipped to challenge and report it.

To report a fraud and receive a police crime reference number, call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or go to www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud
