welcome

in this issue

As we looking forward to the reopening of the world we seemed to have left behind so long ago, there is a buzz of excitement and anticipation. In this issue, we provide details of many local attractions and experiences that are now ready to welcome everyone back. Certainly, things are looking up. In the words of Bear Grylls, you don’t need to go to the ends of the earth, nor climb Everest to have a great adventure, it’s invariably on our doorstep. So, with the rules on holiday destinations causing some confusion, we look at camping on a budget. And if travel confusion extends to technology, we offer help with choosing the right laptop for your child’s needs at school or university. As we begin to come out of lockdown many of us are faced with challenges as well as opportunities. So, as we approach Father’s Day on 20 June, and also Men’s Health Week (14-20 June) this issue places a particular, although not exclusive, emphasis on the men in our community. A few years ago, scientists confirmed stark differences in the wiring of male and female brains. Even in the womb, there are noticeable differences. And a quick glimpse at very young children free-playing in nurseries will note that the girls are often chatting, or enjoying role-play, while the boys will more often choose to be whizzing around on toy cars. We also know that social referencing plays a part. We can all be aware of this and actively monitor children’s own perceptions of the sexes. But this is perhaps easier said than done, when a child wants to fit in with their peers and crucially children need to see those messages reflected throughout their entire environment. Advertisements, toys, games, television,

movies and books so often still depict women in more caring roles and men in the more adventurous ones. These biological and societal expectations appear to play a significant part in why young boys turn into men who later experience mental health in different ways to females. Men are less likely to discuss, or seek help for, their mental health problems. In England, around one in eight men has a common mental health problem and three times as many men as women die by suicide. On page 9 of this issue, Chéronne Connelly Counselling offers support that understands the specific pressures and expectations that men may be facing. If you would like to give a bespoke gift or card on Father’s Day, Homespun offers some crafty ideas on page 8. Whether he is a gardening enthusiast or a keen cook, there is pun-thing for every special dad! Regular cycling has many physical benefits, but it also allows for the rapid spread of endorphins and other good substances like dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, which promotes positive mental health for all. This month, we keep you up to speed with our Cycling Special on pages 20-23. And not forgetting our canine companions, who can be beneficial for those suffering from anxiety and depression, we tackle the extremely concerning rise in dog theft throughout the pandemic. A rise in demand for dogs has led to very high prices and a significant increase in pets being stolen. Pamela Game, from Pampered Pooch, looks at ways to combat this and keep our beloved dogs safe. Take care, stay safe.

Soul Satisfaction

Smiths Funeral Directors Ruth & Ian Smith Dip.FD Mark & Naomi Smith Dip.FD

21 June is a date that we’ve all been looking forward to for some months now. At time of writing, we are still on track for that to be the day when a majority of the restrictions on our lives are lifted Life during COVID has been a bit like eating a low fat, low sugar version of a treat we normally enjoy. With things like Zoom we’ve been able to carry on a bit like life is normal but lacking the usual excitement and satisfaction. Now the restrictions are lifting many of us are finding that what once was normal now seems strange and alien instead of comfortable and familiar. It’s like when you give up sugar for a long time and then try to eat it again but no longer enjoy it like you used to. Not only did our world change during the pandemic but we also changed. What then is the answer to the longing of our soul for satisfaction that our lives never quite satisfy?

Local independent family owned and managed funeral home ensuring personal care & guidance

Jesus promises that in him our souls can find true satisfaction. These words of Jesus are recorded in John’s gospel chapter 10: I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. (John 10:9-10) If we enter new life through Jesus we will receive life from him that is more rich or satisfying than we could ever make it ourselves; satisfaction that is so deep it satisfies our soul.

Check out our recent services on the theme of ‘beyond the storm’ exploring life after the pandemic, available on our YouTube channel CSK Church, Hampton. We are currently holding evening services in our building in limited numbers in accordance with government guidelines and look forward to hopefully welcoming everyone back on Sunday mornings also soon; check our Facebook page or contact us on office@cskhampton.church after the 14 June to find out our latest service plans.

Cervical Screening Awareness Week 15 – 20 June This is an annual event which aims to highlight the importance of regular cervical screening for women’s health. Cervical cancer is the most common form of cancer in women under 35 with two women in the UK per day dying from the disease. Regular cervical screening appointments can prevent up to 75% of instances of cervical cancer, saving 5000 lives per year. Despite this, many women are reluctant to have this test done with a quarter of women not responding to their screening invitation. Cervical Screening Awareness Week is organised by the charity Jo’s trust, a charity dedicated to women affected by cervical cancer or abnormalities. CITY FIBRE PROMOTION

SMARTER ENTERTAINMENT How full fibre can transform our downtime and upgrade our lives Rapid growth of home broadband has changed all of our lives and has had a transformative impact on the entertainment we consume. Netflix, which started life as a home DVD rental company, realised that with speeds continuing to get faster they could empower people to stream directly onto their screens. Now, Netflix is an industry giant. By the end of 2020, it had a total of 200 million subscribers, enormous revenue numbers and more than 500 new TV shows and movies preparing to launch.

latter, that means games must be downloaded via the internet – and with games getting bigger, that puts enormous strain on digital infrastructure, unless you have gigabit-speeds powered by full fibre.

Also known as ‘Over The Top’ services, PWC predicts a surge in revenues in the space from $46.4 billion in 2019 to $86.8 billion in 2024. In parallel, global data consumption is also predicted to rise significantly in that period, from 1.9 quadrillion megabytes to 4.9 quadrillion megabytes.

Of course, it’s not just within the home that full fibre can make a colossal difference. With events back on the horizon, organisers are looking to grab attention in an increasingly competitive landscape and full fibre has a part to play in that.

This explosive growth wouldn’t be possible without robust broadband infrastructure, which is why CityFibre is working to bring full fibre technology to towns and cities across the UK, including across the East of England region. Full fibre networks, unlike many of the copper-based ‘fibre broadband’ services available, use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at light speed all the way from the home to the connection point. This gives users speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps for upload and download, near limitless bandwidth and connectivity users can depend on.

One example is a partnership between Vodafone and Wasps rugby club, where they used 5G – underpinned by full fibre - to transform the fan experience at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry (which benefits from a connection to CityFibre’s network). For fans in #5Gamechanger seats, they were able to use a smartphone to livestream footage from 360° cameras around the pitch and enjoy an augmented reality experience at half-time. And further innovations are underway, like the 5G Festival project in Brighton which aims to stream live music gigs to audiences across the globe by integrating 5G into venues in the city.

These networks won’t just make streaming TV and movies easier. According to a report, the UK video games market generated £7 billion in 2020, driven by increased use due to the pandemic. Of that, some £4.55 billion was spent on software and a staggering 85% was on digital rather than physical boxed games.

Again, none of these experiences would be possible without full fibre. With technology driving so much change in the entertainment landscape, it’s vital that the East of England has a digital infrastructure which supports the innovations we know are coming – and the ones we’re yet to discover.

That goes some way to understanding Sony’s decision to launch two versions of its next-gen PlayStation 5 console, one with a disc drive and one without. With the

I’m Lucy (fondly known as Looloo) - I live in Hampton, with my husband, two grown-up children and my black and white cats, George and Milo.

My love for all things creative began from a young age, my favourite lessons in school were art and design and this passion has been a constant throughout my life. I like to believe I can turn my hand to most things and take inspiration from beautiful patterns, colour and textures. I also have a love for the English language and like to tinker with words. Working full time as a graphic designer, the idea of merging modern design with the humour of puns really appealed to me. Let’s Keep Talking

June is a welcoming summer month as we leave winter behind. It signifies an importance to many men. Fathers. It’s no coincidence then that this year nne Connelly Counselling International Men’s Health Week is 14-20 June and mental health COUNSELLING seems to be the No.1 concern as we move through Covid-19.

thinkingofyou

Social gender traditions say that women should look a certain way and men should behave a certain way. Both expectations can have a huge impact on our mental health.

For men, the expectation to be the breadwinner, strong, with no tears. The father child relationship, limited by access can inadvertently tell men that their needs and feelings don’t matter. With such expectations, men have learnt not to talk about their feelings. Research shows that men will more commonly find external coping mechanisms to deal with internal anxieties, such as drugs and alcohol, which can lead to feeling out of control, irritable, or angry.

Where can we start?

Self-compassion has been linked to good mental health, a term not often applied to men, but men do matter and to support others, we first need to take care of our mental health.

Choose the Right Laptop

So, you need a new laptop. With thousands to choose from, and a thick cloud of jargon to wade through, where do you start? By Tom Hancock First, make a list of what you will use the machine for. All laptops will let you browse the web, type essays, and watch videos. Do you need to run some specialist software? If you’re studying a programming course, graphic design, or photography for example, you’ll probably need a more powerful laptop. Gaming requires the most computer power so, if you want to run the latest games at full speed you’ll need to increase your budget accordingly.

Next, you need to consider how you’re going to use the laptop. If you mostly use it at home at a desk, the laptop doesn’t need to be as portable. You can go for larger sizes and less battery life. If you need it in lessons throughout the day away from a power socket, consider a more compact design with a whole-day battery life. 2-in-1 laptops allow you to you unplug the keyboard and use the laptop as a tablet for even more convenience.

Once you get past the basic requirements it’s down to personal choice. If you can get to a computer shop, try a few out.

Your budget will be dictated by the first two steps: the more features you need the more you’ll need to budget. For a basic, general-purpose laptop expect to pay about £400. If you need to run some specialist software look in the £400 to £800 bracket. Whatever laptop you decide on there are a few basic specifications you need to check. How fast your laptop can perform tasks is controlled by the microprocessor and memory. The faster your processor and the more memory you have, the more responsive your laptop will be. In general, bigger numbers mean more power. As a minimum for your processor, I would advise an Intel i3 or any of the Ryzen devices. For memory (RAM) you need at least 4 GB, 8 GB or more if you can afford it. Apple laptops do their own thing beyond the scope of this article, but the premise is the same. Hard disks are where you store all of your information and programs. Most laptops use solid-state drives which are faster and use less battery than mechanical drives. If you’re only using your laptop for web browsing and writing essays, a 128 GB hard drive will probably be okay. If you want to use your laptop for anything more go for at least 256 GB or you’ll quickly run out of hard drive space. Once you get past the basic requirements it’s down to personal choice. If you can get to a computer shop try a few out. Make sure the keyboard and touchpad feel right for you. Check that the screen is clear and bright enough for you to easily read it. Make sure the size is either big enough for you to use the programs you need, or small enough to make it easily portable.

One of the great things about computers is that techy people love to write reviews about them. Check the web for more advice, and check reviews for any laptop you’re thinking of buying. However, it doesn’t mean you have to go without a break completely because camping can be great fun and very affordable. Conversely, less important factors are now proximity to travel hubs, commute to work and local hospitality venues.

But new ways of working are also driving people to move with people citing the need for a property more suited to long term home working (27 per cent), a home office (nine per cent) and because no longer need to be near the office (seven per cent) as their reasons.

Working from home and more outdoor space is driving desire to move. The need for more space (29 per cent), a bigger garden (19 per cent), being near the countryside (15 per cent) and proximity to family and friends

In contrast only nine per cent of those questioned are intending to relocate to a major city for a job or better amenities in the next 12 months. continued on page 15 >>

How the pandemic has changed what we want from our homes >> continued from page 13

Home working and outdoor spaces are top of list. When asked what the key factors of a new home are now, compared to before Covid-19, there were some significant shifts, where our sense of community has increased – and so has our desire for connectivity. Schools, crime rate, local amenities and being close to family are more important to our home buying decisions now than they were pre-Covid, according to the research2 - highlighting an increased focus on community in choosing a new home. In contrast, commute time and proximity to travel hubs have declined in importance as more people accept home working will be the norm long term. Among the top five most important factors when moving to a new home is now good internet/ broadband connectivity (up from 22 per cent to 26 per cent). In fact, internet connectivity is now such a crucial factor in our household set up that

 75 per cent of house hunters would NOT buy a home if they knew that the internet connectivity was poor.

 And three quarters (75 per cent) would be MORE inclined to buy a house that was full fibre enabled and would also pay on average £1,514 more for a full fibre enabled house – offering faster and more reliable internet connectivity - increasing property value by approximately 0.6% of the average UK house price3.  91% would rate the consistency and reliability of their broadband connectivity as more important than ever in the homebuying process Such is the importance of reliable internet connectivity, nearly eight in 10 (79%) homebuyers are calling for housing developers and estate agents to offer broadband quality tests before they move in so this can be factored into the decision-making process. Georgina Lord, Managing Director from Zen.co.uk says: “It is clear that the pandemic has prompted a real shift in what people want from their homes. The research uncovered a strong sense of people craving community, open space and being near loved ones, whilst the changes to many people’s work set up was clear to see too.

“The fact that people will pay more for a home with better broadband only goes to show how key an amenity it has become.”

“For many the past 12 months has seen a huge step change in the way we work and with employers now fully adapted to this remote way of working, it is likely that long term home working will be a way of life for years to come. Our desire for smarter, more connected spaces is also growing. “With reliance on remote-working and internet connectivity in the home at an-all time high, the majority of respondents (91%) stated the consistency and reliability of broadband connection is now more important than ever in the home-buying process. “The fact that people will pay more for a home with better broadband only goes to show how key an amenity it has become.” “Our survey findings also uncovered a growing desire for homebuilders to start factoring technology into homes at build stage” adds Georgina, “with 70 per cent of those questioned agreeing that it should be part of the fabric of the home.

Hanging Baskets Garden centres and nurseries are crammed full of summer bedding plants at this time of year and they make fabulous hanging baskets and planters. All you need is readily available from your local garden centre. Firstly, choose a goodsized basket (easier to keep moist than a smaller one) and a hanging-basket liner, or a good-sized pot or planter with plenty of drainage holes. A good quality multipurpose compost is essential for excellent results. The range of plants is vast, so carefully consider the colours and textures: decide on subtle or brash and bold, and whether you want to coordinate the flowers with other garden features. To get started with your planting, place your basket in a large flowerpot as this stops the round-bottomed basket from moving. Place the liner in the basket, adjusting it to fit the basket and trimming off any excess. Next add handfuls of compost up to the point where you want to plant around the sides of the basket. Planting slits are included in some liners. If you are using a pot, place a base of broken flowerpots or large stones in the base and top up with compost to within around 10cm of the pot rim.

Carefully remove the plants you need from their containers, easing the root balls out gently but firmly. An upright plant such as a fuchsia or pelargonium is a perfect choice for the centre of the basket or container, as it helps to give your planting height and structure. Any container looks better if there are plants cascading over the sides, so choose trailing plants and put these in around the edge. Space the trailing plants evenly around the sides of the basket. Drizzle compost around and between the root balls of all the plants, making sure that each one has new and fresh compost to grow in to. Use your fingers to firm the compost and make sure that there are no gaps. Once the planting is complete, water the container thoroughly using a watering can with the rose attached. Finally give your basket or pot a few days’ ‘rest’ sitting in a cool spot out of too much hot, direct sunshine.

Tips • Never let the compost dry out completely. Use a watering can with a rose attached or a gentle spray nozzle on the end of a hose. • If the container does become too dry, sit it in a bowl of water for about an hour, allowing it to soak up the water it needs from the base and sides. • Regularly remove faded flowers as this will help to encourage the plants to continue producing more flowers. • Check regularly for any pests such as greenfly and treat the problem promptly. When plants are tightly crammed together, problems soon build up and spread if you’re not quick off the mark. • Feed every couple of weeks with a high-potash liquid fertiliser such as a tomato feed, as this will help to encourage more flowers to develop.

secondnature Have you noticed how many celandines there have been in Hampton this spring? We’ve found them spreading and blossoming around our Vale garden.

Hampt  n

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

The golden stars of spring I mean the Lesser Celandine rather than the Greater Celandine (the two are strangely, despite the names, not related), which is much taller. The Lesser Celandine has star-shaped yellow flowers which bring a cheerful ground colour in woodlands, and their similarity to the buttercup can be clearly seen. They are described as a herb belonging to the buttercup family. Other local names for the Lesser Celandine are Golden Guineas, Golden Stars, Brighteye and Starflower. John Clare, our Helpston poet, wrote that ‘The children call them golden daiseys’. Their early appearance after winter mean that they provide nectar for queen bumblebees and other pollinators emerging from hibernation. It was once thought that you could use Lesser Celandine to predict rainfall as they close their petals before raindrops fall. They do have another name: that of Pilewort! So you might guess from that they were, and are, still used (in Russia) to cure haemorrhoids. In some areas the plant is known as Scurvywort due to the fact that the leaves have

a high Vitamin C content and were used to cure Scurvy. Apparently the Lesser Celandine was Wordsworth’s favourite flower. He wrote three poems about them and requested that the flower be carved on his gravestone. Unfortunately the stonemason couldn’t tell the difference between Lesser and Greater Celandine and carved Greater Celandine on there by mistake. The roots, or tubers, reminded farmers of cows’ teats, so they hung them up in cowsheds believing that they would ensure a good supply of creamy milk. Thus they became known by some as Butterand-cheese or Cream-and-butter. There is even a ‘Celandine Day’ the 21st February when flowering was observed to begin. It was Gilbert White, the famous naturalist, who first observed, and recorded, this date in his Hampshire village of Selborne.

The impact of a cooler spring Many young plant seedlings have emerged more purple of leaf a sign that phosphates are in low supply because below five Celsius plants are unable to absorb key micronutrients. However, this needs to be calibrated in terms of long-term trends if you look back at records from one hundred years ago these indicators were being noted between one and two months later into the year than today so, in fact, spring is still early. But the big question is what potential impact does this modern late spring have? A return to twenty years ago might actually be seen as a blessing for nature as the natural cycle of life is settling back into a recognised pattern, hibernation can continue and flowers and insects may emerge in synchronicity again. It

would certainly be good to think that nature is being enabled to rebalance but sadly this is perhaps not true. Before the late spring cold spell, we had a period of relative warmth and the fields and gardens began to buzz with bees. Since the bad weather returned there have been large numbers of bumblebees found dead across the area and this is not down to age as all are relatively young from New Year nests it raises questions as to whether the colonies can recover from such early season losses and what of the butterflies that were on the wing in February? Only time will tell what impact the recent weather trends have had on nature but let’s hope for more stable conditions for the remainder of the year to help nature recover.

There is a Flower, the Lesser Celandine, That shrinks, like many more, from cold and rain; And, the first moment that the sun may shine, Bright as the sun himself, ‘tis out again! William Wordsworth

All the indicators have pointed to this spring being colder than usual as well as hit first by drought and then too much rain and certainly most recording schemes are showing that the so called first signs of spring such as hazel flowers, frogspawn and bee emergence are on average three weeks behind 2020

fitforlife Bushfield Juniors Running Club Bushfield Juniors started a little over three years ago and is the brainchild of Paul Atherfold and myself, both keen runners, members of Bushfield Joggers and local Hampton residents. by Chris Hopewell We wanted to create a space where local children can improve their fitness, make friends and have fun in a safe and secure environment.

Featuring Daniel Goodacre

HAMPTON HARRIERS Success Story Daniel Goodacre first joined Hampton Harriers back in May 2020 when he was told by close friend Jon Murphy about the group. James Trigg wanted to feature Dan’s success journey after seeing his posts on the group page, so had a few questions for him. What made you join Hampton Harriers? Lockdown prevented me going to the gym as it was closed so I started running as I wanted to get fitter. Jon saw my running posts on Facebook so invited me to join the group. What benefits have you noticed since joining the group? My general health has improved, my sleeping has improved and my mind feels so much more positive, overall amazing.

With 4 qualified English Athletics coaches at our disposal, we have gone from having three or four enthusiastic children in our early days, to now regularly training with 20-25 young, energetic athletes.

What distance did you start with and how far are you running now?

The handicap mile is a firm favourite as it allows all runners an equal chance of winning as the quicker you can run, the further back you are in the starting order.

I started with 5K in May 2020 and I have just completed my first Half Marathon in May 2021 in 2hr 6mins, so really pleased how far I’ve come. What are your goals now?

Our sessions work on various To maintain my fitness and keep improving, aspects of running, from I achieved 200 kilometres in March 2021 endurance, to sprinting and and a 5K PB also in March 2021, so I just everything in between; all want to keep improving. with the runners’ enjoyment What would you say to anyone looking to and safety at the forefront of join Hampton Harriers our minds. Hampton Harriers is such a friendly and As well as our sessions each inspiring group, you’ll find runners of all Friday, we also organize levels so don’t be afraid to join. I never other events such as Mini thought I’d enjoy running as much as I do Olympics in the Summer and I’ve found new friends too. and Handicapped Mile races.

A running group for Hampton residents and likeminded people to share some company on training runs. Facebook-square Search for Hampton Harriers

We are a firm believer in word of mouth as the best form of advertising and we will often field enquiries from friends and family of existing members who are only more than happy to tell them about the fun and enjoyment they are having. It gives us great pleasure every Friday to see the children working hard and improving week on week.

CYCLING SPECIAL FEATURE © Mark Nichols

WHEEL POW Cycling is a fun activity that can be enjoyed by all the family, whether it’s a Sunday afternoon with a picnic or something more serious and you want to get into competitive cycling. Before you hit the road, here are the essential basic riding skills that everyone should know and practice

You never forget how to ride a bike, right? That’s essentially true, but there are a few things we do forget – or never learned. We’re talking about things like getting the saddle height right, setting off, braking and using the gears. Plus, there’s one mechanical skill that’s so useful everyone should know how to do it: getting your front wheel off and on so you can carry your bike by car.

Set your saddle right Getting your saddle height right is vital. Just as you wouldn’t be very comfortable walking around in a pair of jeans with the legs four inches too long, so you won’t be comfortable on a bike if the saddle is too high or too low. If your saddle is a lot too high, you’ll know about it very quickly – you won’t be able to reach the pedals! If it’s just a little too high, you will still be able to reach the pedals but your hips will rock from side to side as you pedal. That will quickly make you sore and uncomfortable.

20

If your saddle’s too low, you lose muscular efficiency and so you’ll get tired more quickly. For some people, the sharper bend in the knee from a low saddle height can cause injury.

Braking The trick to learning to stop quickly is to use the brakes together, then learn to use the front brake – your most powerful brake – to maximum advantage. Many riders fear that using the front brake will put them over the handlebar, but you can reduce your stopping distance by almost 50 per cent if you use the front brake rather than the rear on its own.

Using the gears We all see many cyclists struggling up hills because they don’t know how to use their gears. It’s not obvious what all those sprockets and the buttons on the handlebars do, so don’t be afraid to ask your bike shop for a demonstration.

WER

Removing your front wheel

It’s not a riding skill, but being able to get the front wheel off your bike is useful because it makes it possible to load the bike into a car to get further afield and perform field repairs like fixing a puncture. There isn’t room here to deal with all the possibilities, so we’ve tackled a very common situation, a bike with V-brakes. Again, ask you bike shop for a demonstration on your bike. You may need to create some slack in the brake cable. Undo the lockring on the barrel adjuster and screw it all the way into the lever body. Slide the bellows-shaped cover off the steel tube (called a noodle) at the top of the brake so you can see where the noodle fits into the brake arm. Squeeze the brake arms together so that the noodle comes free from its anchor point in the brake arm. The brake fully open. The pads are now spaced widely enough that the wheel will pass through them easily.

Undo the quick-release lever on the wheel hub by pushing it out from the wheel. It’s not a spanner handle so don’t try to unscrew it by turning it. The quick-release in fully open position. The heel should now be loose in the fork, but the lips on the ends of the fork legs stop it from just dropping out. To allow the wheel to clear the fork lips, unscrew the nut on the opposite end of the quick release enough that the wheel can come out. Lift the bike off the wheel and you’re ready to stow your bike, fix a flat or do whatever else needs doing. To refit the wheel, start with the quick release open, tighten the nut so touches the fork, then unscrew a couple turns. Close the lever. It should need considerable effort. To close the brake, squeeze the arms together and push the noodle into place. Replace the bellows and, if necessary, take up the cable slack at the lever.

PETERBOROUGH CYCLE HUB PROMOTION

CYCLING SPECIAL FEATURE

fitforlife

A CYCLE HUB of activity

Peterborough Cycle Hub was formed when three local cycling enthusiasts who worked in the cycling industry for many years wanted to offer you their full enthusiasm and expertise direct.

Peterborough Cycle Hub sells leading brands including Merida, Orbea and Tifosi bikes, for all disciplines, so whether you are looking for a hybrid to go round Ferry Meadows with the family on a Sunday or are wanting to upgrade your road bike. they have it covered. Priding themselves in putting customer service first with all their work, no matter how big or small the task, taking the time to assess your personal needs and goals to then point you in the direction of the most perfect bike for you!

They also specialise in bike fitting. Having carried out over a 1,000 bike fits, this has evolved over the years to help riders of all levels from the complete novice to topend road racers.

What is a bike fit? The process of adjusting your position on your bike to make you as comfy as possible whilst also maintaining maximum efficiency and preventing injury. A good bike fit will enable you to ride longer distances by understanding the fundamentals of cycling. Making you more efficient will help you to ride longer distances on less fuel.

WE OFFER A FREE FIRST SERVICE

All new bikes purchased from us also have a free first service, six weeks after purchase.

We can collect from your home or work in WE OFFER A FREE COLLECTION SERVICE Hampton to make maintaining your bike easy.

Keeping your bike running in tip-top condition is essential to give you the best riding experience. Peterborough Cycle Hub is driven by passion, workmanship and attention to detail, servicing and repairing all makes and models of bikes, and last year introducing a free collection

Crown Lake About The Crown Lake Cycle Route

This 11.5 mile route starts at the Serpentine Green Shopping Centre in Hampton before joining up with the Green Wheel and heading out towards the Crown Lakes Country Park. After passing through the Park the route continues into the Fens, passing through Farcet, as you amble along the Old Course of the River Nene to Park Farm and Stanground. After crossing Stanground Lock, you head back towards the city centre, before cycling along the Embankment and joining up with the Wellingtonia Cycleway as it roams alongside the Nene Valley Railway. As you make your way through the Ortons you will eventually reach the cycle bridge over Fletton Parkway, which returns you Hampton. The route is suitable for families as the majority is on quiet lanes, although some on-road cycling and negotiation of junctions is required, thus we would recommend this route to confident cyclists only. At an average speed (8 mph) most cyclists will take approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to complete theroute (excluding breaks etc).

and delivery service for all bikes booked in for one of our service packages in the Peterborough area as more people saw the importance of regular exercise, for both their mind and body, during covid.

Peterborough Cycle Hub recommend having your bike serviced every 6-12 months dependent on usage, as this can stop the risk of getting any larger bills as components wear out. Keeping the chain clean and lubricated is very important as it is a component that does the most work yet cheap to replace. If not maintained or replaced it can wear out other, more costly, components. Cycling is a great way to explore the local surroundings, or commute to work and we are partnered with many cycle to work schemes that allow tax savings for new bikes. As cycling has become more popular there has been an increase in demand for electric bikes. The development in both engineering and design has evolved so much that is it hard to see the motor in many of them and a preferred way for those who are not as able to cycle distances or do not want to get hot and sweaty on their commute. What is the Cycle to Work scheme? Cycle to Work enables employees to get a bike, tax-free, saving a minimum of 25% on its high street value. Importance of riding with a helmet Wearing a helmet is the single most effective way of reducing head injuries.

11.5miles / 18km Approx. 1hr 30mins

Points of Interest Crown Lakes Country Park – this 87 acre site was opened to the public as a country park by O&H Hampton in 1997. It was established on what was a derelict site left over from the brickmaking industry. Two large brick-pits have since been flooded to create a fantastic wetland feature and it has subsequently been transformed by the planting of over 75,000 indigenous trees and shrubs.

Cycle path under railway

Horsey Toll – After leaving Farcet, you meander along the Old Course of the River Nene and just before you reach the bridge over the river you will notice an area of raised land to your right. This is the old Civil War Fort at Horsey Toll. The fort was constructed by Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian forces in 1643- 44, during the early stages of the English Civil War.

Fun for all the family in

CENTRAL PARK

Friends of Central Park and their supporters have organised a series of events over the summer months and into early autumn which are designed to keep families engaged and active. Sports Taster Day 26 June Families will be able to try out new sports in specific taster sessions for FREE throughout the day which will include croquet, social cricket, volleyball, tennis, martial arts, table tennis and football. Qualified coaches will provide their time and equipment free of charge for both adults and children so the whole family can come along and have a go at something new. People just need to bring sensible clothing and flat shoes so that they can take part. The event will open around 11am and finish around 4pm.

Family Fun Fay & Fun Dog Show 4 September

Zombies in the Park 31 October

There will be fun fair rides for the younger children, local arts, and crafts stalls, ‘have a go’ sports activities and a dog show where families and their pooches can take part.

Zombies in the Park will be scaring everyone. There will be loads of competitions including fancy dress, best carved pumpkins, pin the nose on the Zombie, all with prizes to be won.

There are several categories that can be entered (for a small fee) on the day and some lovely prizes worth winning that have been donated by local and national companies.

Remember that Central Park has lots of things to do and see during the day, even when there is not an event happening. There are sunken, sensory, and formal gardens to explore, an aviary to visit and flat paved nature walks suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. The sensory garden is full of fragrant and tactile plants, particularly pleasing for those with sensory disabilities. Families can also enjoy the new apparatus in the adventure playground. The paddling pool will be open soon and is very popular with the under-fives if the weather is kind. People

can book the tennis courts, use the outdoor gym, croquet courts and public toilets. Do not forget the fabulous Willow Cafe, where families will be welcomed by Christine and her team and can take a well-deserved break and grab a bite to eat.

Be prepared to be scared on our new Ghost Walk in the Park feature too. FIND OUT MORE All events will follow the relevant Covid requirements that are in place at the time of the event. ANEW way to view aesthetic treatments Trends in aesthetic treatments have changed over the past few years, and less is now more. The key is to make people wonder...have they or haven’t they had ‘work’ done? The secret with tweakments is to seek out the best practitioner who uses safe, welltested products, and who knows when to stop! Dr Rebecca Coates owner of Anew Medical Aesthetics is now booked up for weeks and says the most popular treatment right now is the Juvederm ® 8-point facelift.”

What is the Juvederm® 8-Point Facelift?

before

Also known as a ‘non-surgical facelift’ or ‘liquid facelift,’ the 8-point lift uses the most advanced dermal filler techniques to volumise and lift the face to create a more youthful appearance. The results obtained often negate the need to undergo a surgical facelift.

after

Using high quality dermal fillers from the Juvederm Vycross range including Juvederm

Voluma, Juvederm Volift and Juvederm Volbella, and precise injection techniques, volume is restored. The 8-point lift offers a more complete solution compared to individual dermal filler treatments. There is minimal downtime and the results are immediately visible. Results on average last 15 to 18 months. Dr Rebecca Coates trained in Harley Street to ensure she learnt from the best in the aesthetic industry and offer a wide range of advanced non-surgical treatments to make people feel ‘better’ in a very different way. From anti-ageing treatments to lip fillers, PDO thread lifts to IV nutrient therapy, non-surgical rhinoplasty to tear-trough correction, she can tailor a package to address each individual’s needs.

pawsforthought Dog owners should be wary of posting pictures of their pet on social media and leaving them unattended outside shops, police have warned, amid a rising number of dog thefts in the UK. Last year, there was a boom in what were labelled ‘pandemic puppies’ as people stuck at home during lockdown acquired pets to lift their spirits. But DogLost, a UK charity that helps victims of dog theft, recorded a 170% increase in the crime, from 172 dogs in 2019 to 465 dogs in 2020.

The sad tail end of a pandemic Dog welfare has always been our priority. Over the years, we’ve been there for abandoned and neglected dogs, for dogs who’ve needed urgent medical care, or for those who have simply needed a new home. But recently, dogs have been facing a new threat, COVID-19. Written by Pamela Game@ Pampered Pooch www.Pamperdpooch.online

Experts warn that many dogs will experience separation related anxiety when their owners return to the office. Pets can be extremely sensitive to change and this can cause stress for them.

The fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic is likely to have a huge impact on dog owners around the UK. Changes to our daily routines could mean more dogs develop behavioural issues. Vet costs may put strains on finances that are already stretched. Sadly, dog thefts are on the rise too, as the demand for certain breeds increases. With the price of many dogs rising to extortionate prices during lockdown, criminals can target the dogs, knowing they can sell them on to make good money.

Owners should remain vigilant to keep their dog safe. Beware of breeders who aren’t registered, they could have puppy farms. Never buy a puppy until you have seen the mother with her puppies for yourself and find out as much as you can before you buy. Never pay a deposit until you have seen the puppy either. Always make sure you see the contract which should list the puppies’ parents, breed, health and diet etc. Never feel pressured, and if you do, just walk away. If they are cheap there’s probably a reason.

The average cost of owning a dog in its entire life is about £17,000. One of the most popular breeds of dog seems to be the labrador, and to own one can cost around £2500 upwards. The Tibetan mastiff, a huge Asian breed, can cost you a bob or two, and is the world’s most expensive dog. In fact, in China one was sold for £1.14m. This breed is mainly used as a guard dog and has been known to even take on a tiger.

DOG WALKING

Police advice on how to protect your pet from thieves: • Keep an ID tag on your dog but not with their name. • Lock gates using bolts at the top and bottom, along with a heavy-duty padlock • Ensure there are no places where dogs or other animals can escape or be pulled through, if they are left in a back garden • Never leave your pet in the garden unattended • Fit a bell or gate alarm so it makes a sound when someone opens it • Purchase a driveway alarm so you are alerted to any visitors, these can also be used in rear gardens • Make sure your dog is microchipped and their details are updated so that they can be returned if they are stolen and subsequently found • Avoid leaving a dog tied up outside a shop or left alone in a car, even for a few minutes • Take lots of photographs of your dog to prove ownership if it’s stolen and then found • Report dog theft to police straight away

TAX TIPS

This is the second in a series of many tax tips from Bird & Co that will be spread over a period that may help you with a few of the many ways to save on tax, including checking your tax code, making the most of tax-free allowances and dozens of other ways to reduce your tax bill. by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

7 

Get a season ticket loan - some employers will offer you a tax-free loan to buy your season ticket, potentially saving you hundreds on travel costs. Ask your employer if they’re part of the scheme.

8 

Claim tax-free childcare - under the tax-free childcare scheme, you can claim back 25% of your childcare costs, up to £500 every three months. You’ll have to meet set criteria, including having a child under 11 and earning less than £100,000. Alternatively, your employer may be willing to start a salary sacrifice childcare scheme. These are easy to establish and can result in substantial savings for both employees and employers.

9 

Get a company car - if you are entitled to a company car, consider whether it would be more taxefficient to take a cash equivalent in pay instead.

10 

Switch to a low-emission car - if you are changing your company car, consider a low-emissions model or perhaps a hybrid or electric .These are now taxed at a lower percentage of their list price than cars with a high CO2 rating.

11 Maximise your personal

savings allowance - in 2021/2022, you can earn £1,000 of interest on savings tax-free if you’re a basicrate taxpayer. If you’re a higher-rate taxpayer, your tax-free allowance is £500. Also see our Tax Tip 12 for additional amounts. You’ll only pay tax on savings income that exceeds this threshold. This will no longer be deducted automatically by the savings provider. If tax is due, you’ll need to pay it via self-assessment or have it deducted via PAYE. Keep in mind that you won’t have a savings allowance as an additionalrate (45%) taxpayer.

Marriage Breakdown

by Belinda Smith & Co Solicitors

Divorce If you have been married for more than a year, and you are sure your marriage has irretrievably broken down, you can start divorce proceedings at a Family Court (now regionally based). If you have children You will also need advice about your rights and responsibilities for your children. Decisions will have to be made about how much time the children spend with each of you and what level of financial support they will need. Property and Finances Dividing the matrimonial assets and deciding what happens to the family home, can be one of the most challenging areas of marriage breakdown. We will advise and guide you through the legal complexities with the aim of reaching a fair and workable solution. You will need to know what and how much of your and your spouse’s property and finances belong to whom and how a fair division can be achieved, according to legal principles and the needs of you, your spouse and especially the children. Divorce doesn’t have to be difficult It is more usual than not to conclude cases with consent orders, rather than

having to go to Court for a judge to make decisions on financial matters or those affecting your children. The climate for solicitors nowadays is to work with their clients to achieve agreed outcomes, rather than adopting the more oppositional approach of past times. Mediation has gained prominence in recent years, as an option for negotiating to an agreed solution in family issues following separation. Mediators are professionally trained but cannot offer legal advice. We will provide you with information about this process which you may choose to attempt with your partner with a view to reaching an agreement over finances and/or your children. If successful, the brokered agreement would then be brought to your solicitors for implementation within the divorce proceedings. It may be that you recognise that the marriage has irretrievably broken down, but you don’t want to start divorce proceedings just yet. If that is the case, everything that is referred to above concerning arrangements for your finances and your children, can be achieved on a time limited basis, under a Separation Agreement.

12 

Use the starter rate for savings - if your income from a job or pension is below the £12,570 in 2021-22, but you earn income through interest on savings, you may also qualify for the starter savings allowance. Any interest you earn up to £5,000 is tax-free. This will be in addition to your personal savings allowance, meaning you could earn as much as £18,570 before paying tax.

staysafe Using tried and tested professionals is the key to locking out rogue traders It seems that it is not only driveways, garden clearance and replacement guttering (to name a few) that are target areas for the cowboy builders and scammers. Another trade that has fallen foul of the rogue traders is locksmiths, as highlighted on BBC One’s Rip Off Britain on 10 May 2021. The trade is unregulated which means that anyone can buy a kit and then advertise themselves as a locksmith. According to experts, the racket has reached an 'industrial scale' due to the pandemic. According to recent surveys:  More than 800 complaints were made about rogue locksmiths over the past year  In two thirds of cases customers are being overcharged by £200 or more  In one example, a locksmith quoted a price of £49, but the final bill came to £1,604

FUNERAL SERVICES LTD.

Sadly, daily cases are being recorded from consumers with stories about unscrupulous activities by people masquerading as locksmiths; overcharging for sub-standard work, displaying threatening behaviour and even withholding key to locks that have fitted. There are a number of red flags for spotting the scammers when hiring a locksmith, and here are a few tell-tale signs that the so-called locksmith may be far from reputable:  Calls are answered by a call centre which makes it difficult to obtain details for the locksmith doing the job. This can also mean you don’t know who is doing the work as jobs are often subcontracted.

 The company is ranked at or towards the top of online advertising listings. As they have paid to be there, this isn’t an indication about the quality of their work.  The locksmith is vague about their experience and they may be reluctant to provide feedback about previous jobs or recommendations.  Drilling is a method of destructive entry and is only used as a last resort when all other methods haven’t worked with cylinders. Many rogues start with the drill and this should ring alarm bells.

The advice on ‘Rip off Britain’ is that when faced with being locked out of your home, you will no doubt panic. Be wary of just using the internet as some of these rogues pay to be promoted at the top of advertising listings. They recommend that, even though you may not need a locksmith at the moment, store a number in your phone; that way if anything happens in the future, you’ve got a number of a reputable locksmith you can use. Safe Local Trades would also urge homeowners to always call in the professionals – and we are lucky to have our very own reputable and vetted locksmith as a member.
