...to the February issue of the Hampton Gazette. In these difficult times, community has never been more important. We know that there are so many groups, organisations and businesses out there doing fantastic work to support our communities through the COVID-19 pandemic. And, as always, we continue to celebrate these initiatives and the people behind them.

The Parish Council assisted residents over the Christmas period by donating £2000 to Christ the Servant King Church which went towards local Christmas hampers. The Deskgo team, who rent out no strings office space, raised over £300 for NHS charities decided to create a festive window displays and decked the office out with fake snow and magical lighting over the Christmas period. This managed to raise £387 in donations to provide vital support for our NHS heroes and their patients and families. In this issue, we also appreciate the work of local resident, Melissa Jones who has helped so many local families with food and support. It all started with an idea she posted on the Hampton Gazette Facebook group. You can read more about this and those she has helped on page 10. Walking can offer numerous health benefits to people of all ages and fitness levels. It may also help prevent certain diseases and even prolong your life. With many of us with so much more time on our hands, many have been out exploring the local area! There are two local walks for you to try on page 11. Whilst out and about, and even in the more urban areas of Hampton, you may well spot a green woodpecker. The largest of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain, this bird has a fairly weak bill and doesn't actually peck much wood! Read more on page 13. Take care of yourselves and each other.

Feeling a bit flat? As the cold winter months draw on, especially during this third national lockdown, we can be forgiven for feeling a bit flat, to say the least. This year pancake day comes at a welcome time, giving us an opportunity to have a simple celebration. In days gone by, pancake day, known in the church as Shrove Tuesday, was the day of preparing for the 40 day season of Lent beginning the next day. People would do this by telling a priest the wrong things they had done to have them “shriven” (an old word meaning forgiven, the root of the word “Shrove”) and by using up rich foods such as eggs and fats in their house in readiness for Lent when people would “fast”, choosing to cut out these foods out of devotion to God. Often Christians today still choose something to give up for Lent such as chocolate or alcohol, but this year with so much in life already restricted it would be understandable if this seemed too difficult.

There may well be more tough weeks ahead as we wait for the end of the pandemic but the fundamentals of life haven’t changed; Christians believe that God made us and that each day we live is a gift from him where we can enjoy what he made and enjoy his love and forgiveness given to us through Jesus. This year as we eat our pancakes how about giving thanks to God for this love and for the ability to enjoy simple things in life like food and our families? You might like to pray this prayer relying on God to lift you up even if you feel flat. Dear God, we thank you for all the things we can enjoy in our everyday lives; delicious foods, the beauty of nature, conversations with family and friends. As we celebrate, help us to remember that it was you who made all these things and made us. Keep us full of hope, trusting in your wonderful love that lasts forever. Amen. Lakeside Healthcare Covid-19 National Vaccination Programme This is the biggest vaccination programme the NHS has every undertaken. The NHS is well-used to delivering millions of vaccines a year, and is moving quickly to roll out this vaccine to those who need it, but it’s important that we remember this will be a marathon, not a sprint. The large increase in cases that hospitals are seeing and the emergence of a new variant of the virus shows that we cannot let our guard down now.

NHS staff are doing an incredible job to deliver what is the largest vaccination programme in our history, at the same time as continuing to be there for everyone who needs care.

The public have an important part to play to help them do this: Please don’t contact the NHS to seek a vaccine, we will contact you When we do contact you, please attend your booked appointment Please continue to follow all the guidance to control the virus and save lives Visit our website for the most up to date information www.yaxleygp.nhs.uk/

World Cancer Day World Cancer Day every 4 February is the global uniting initiative led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC). The Parish Council assisted residents this Christmas period by donating £2000 to Christ the Servant King Church in their efforts to supply 80 Christmas hampers and supplied 10 Christmas packages with food and a Christmas present to AgeUK that were gratefully received by residents in Hampton. Hopefully, the spring will see a reduction in social distancing measures and Hampton can once again become the thriving community hub that it was before the Pandemic, to assist with this the Parish Council is committed to helping community groups that may need grants to restart their activities. The forms to request these grants can be found on the Parish website and the Clerk can be contacted for any assistance that you may need with this. The Parish Council is committed to assisting residents wherever possible and so the forthcoming years’ precept will also be 11% lower than the last year’s total and the Parish Council will fund any shortfall in the budget through reserves. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown, the Parish Office remains closed however the normal Parish functions will continue to run as normal with all meetings held online via Zoom. Residents are always welcome to join and details of the next meetings can be found on the Parish website www.hamptonpc.org.uk and the clerk can be contacted via the Parish website or by email parishoffice@hamptonpc.co.uk The Lengthsmen have also been working hard throughout this Pandemic and have reported an increase in fly tipping, these incidents are always recorded and dealt with as quickly as possible. Please help to keep Hampton litter free by using the public bins, taking your waste home with you and ensuring that your household bin lid is closed at all times.

Rare Disease Day Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. The campaign targets primarily the general public and also seeks to raise awareness amongst policy makers, public authorities, industry representatives, researchers, health professionals and anyone who has a genuine interest in rare diseases. hamptonhub ‘Age in place’ – how full fibre can help us age with dignity At CityFibre, we’re committed to bringing full fibre and lightning fast connection speeds to Peterborough homes for a host of reasons. As the COVID-19 pandemic has progressed, with lockdown having separated many of us from our families, friends and colleagues, the ability to at least stay connected virtually has proven key. From group video calls and quizzes to online shopping, remote learning sessions and virtual fitness classes, we’ve embraced all things digital on an almost universal level. Without this technology, it’s arguable that adapting to lockdown restrictions would have been far more challenging for much of the population. Clearly, digital communications now play a much bigger role in our day-to-day lives, and this is a shift that’s unlikely to be reversed any time in the near future. But, this calls for further consideration of those without access to these services, particularly those more at risk of isolation. It is more important than ever to ensure that nobody is excluded from this digital shift, and this includes the nation’s older generation - a group that faced far stricter social distancing than almost any other. A big reason that we’re investing so heavily in transforming Peterborough’s digital connectivity is because it can help us tackle the ‘grand challenges’ of the 21st Century, including meeting the demands of an aging population. Today, there are nearly 12m people aged 65 or over in the UK - a number that is set to increase significantly in the next decade. By 2030, more than a fifth of the population will be elderly. With so many people living longer, immense pressure is being put on social care institutions and the NHS. Age UK estimates that 40 per cent of over-65s live with at least one long-term condition. These issues often mean elderly relatives are forced to relocate to a retirement home, despite most wanting to ‘age in place’ and stay in the homes they’ve created. Forced relocations are sometimes necessary to provide people with proper care but they can be hugely disruptive and upsetting for many. By enabling faster, ultra-reliable eldercare technology, full fibre technology can help address these problems and make aging in place a real possibility for millions. Devices to help elderly citizens have been around for a long time, going back to Life Alert which was first released in 1987. However, these devices often go unused because they’ve been ugly, poorly designed and socially stigmatising. Fortunately, as technology has advanced – particularly through robotics – companies have solved a lot of these problems, developing sleek new designs that are much more attractive, while still being functional. One key advance that could make a huge difference is care robots. The UK government has created a £34m research programme to assess how care robots could ease caring responsibilities for Brits. Already, various models are capable of: Transcribing and storing crucial medical information, reducing the chance of error creeping in, while helping medical practitioners make better diagnoses. Addressing cognitive decline issue by reminding care-receivers when to eat, drink or take medication, do exercise or attend an appointment. Enabling treatment to continue uninterrupted at nights, or during holidays – typically times when patients are left alone. Continuously monitoring and collecting data for symptoms of conditions like heart disease and alert doctors or nurses to take action. Beyond robotics, device manufacturers and pharma firms are developing a multitude of life-saving technologies available on the market, from insulin delivery systems to asthma attack monitors, to help people ‘age in place’. It’s estimated that, by 2025, there will be 800m connected healthcare devices active across Europe, of which half (50 per cent) will be for remote operation and control to allow patients greater freedom. Opportunities like these are a key reason we’re investing so heavily in rolling out full fibre in Peterborough. Once gigabit-speed full fibre broadband is in place, more patients than ever can purchase devices like care robots, wearable monitors and other solutions, safe in the knowledge that they are not going to suffer disruptive lags or outages due to poor connectivity.

Hampton Helpers Community Champion, Melissa Hampton Helpers was started by Hampton resident, Melissa Jones, in November 2020. Initially, it was a post on the Hampton Gazette Facebook group, offering a cup of soup and a toasted sandwich to anyone feeling the pinch during half term.

However, the response from the local community was overwhelming and, in the space of just a few hours, hundreds of pounds where donated. Support also came from local businesses Brooks Wealth Management and CareerJuice Recruitment, in addition to the Yaxley Parish Council. With the funds raised, Melissa took a trip to Aldi, loaded up a couple of shopping trolleys of food and Hampton Helpers Food Hampers was born. The hampers primarily consisted of a “weekly food shop”, but we have also included items such as toiletries, toilet roll, nappies and kids clothes! The majority of the items where purchased with monies donated, but this was subsidised with food donations from local residents. They also received a donation of cupcakes from Bakes and Cupcakes by Alice. At Christmas, they repeated the initiative with their Christmas Day Dinner Boxes. The December initiative

was to ensure that every child got a Christmas Dinner, with all the trimmings, regardless of their family's situation. Now they are working towards repeating the scheme for February half term, which will fall at the end of a very tough six weeks for families, after yet another national lockdown. If you would like to make a donation, you can find Hampton Helpers on Facebook. Quote from a volunteer: I heard about Melissa’s initiative from a friend . I thought the idea was so worthwhile as many people were struggling to feed their children with no free school meals during the half term last year. Having been furloughed since last March and now redundant I wanted to help others worse off than me. I had spare time so offered to make deliveries of our food boxes.

I have been struggling through lockdown and also found this helped my metal health. Quote from a family we helped: I am a single mum with 6 children through no choice of my own as I escaped domestic violence and have no supportive family around so you were like a lifeline to our family and made us feel truly loved and supported at the most special time of year Xmas when we would previously often feel alone and isolated I can say this Xmas was the best for us as we felt as if somebody cared for us all and that means so much to vulnerable families.

It was so worthwhile. Families were grateful for the help. It was a life line to some who are falling through the cracks of other support systems. We did the same thing at Christmas and now preparing for the next half term.

Local Walks

hamptonhub With many of us with so much more time on our hands, we have been out exploring the local area and probably walking much more than we would normally do! With this in mind we have included two local walks for you to try.

Hampton Walk 1

Hampton walk 2

This trail should take approximately three hours and it is 6.6 miles there and back.

This walk should take approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes, and is about 3.5 miles.

This route will take you through fields which you would have never thought existed in Hampton.

This walk will take you through a lot of greenery and peaceful lakes, it will end up at a play park and a football pitch.

The start of this trail is at Avery house, first of all you'll need to the right and not cross over London road, walk past the cinder blocks down the off-road path. This will take you to the green wheel Haddon route. You will walk on the same path round the lake for 30 minutes until you come to an opening with Hampton on your right and a large field of wheat on your left. Make your way to the noticeable tree that has no leaves, there will be a path that leads you there. Follow this path for 15 minutes and you will then pass a gate and onto a road, turn left at the road. If you are accompanied by a dog you should turn around and follow the path back as you will need to walk on the side of a quiet road for a mile. Once you have got to the premier inn turn left and follow the path that leads you past Norman Cross. Follow this path for two miles through Yaxley, past the petrol station and onwards into Hampton. You should find yourself across the road opposite Avery house.

This route starts off at Avery house where you will need to cross over so you are at the start of the green wheel Farcet sign. Follow the sign that says green wheel Farcet, and stay on that path for 20 minutes until you come to a choice of two paths. You will take the path on the right and will be walking along barron land until you come to a bridge. Cross the bridge and go down the steps ahead of you and continue on the path forward, for a while, you will then come to an opening where a road will be opposite and over the road will be a field and a park. Once finished playing turn around and follow the same route back to get to Avery house.

If you have found local gems during lockdown then please let us know on – info@hamptongazette.co.uk

If i had a £1 for every time I was asked whether we will get abroad this year I would be a rich lady, buying my own remote island in the Caribbean somewhere... The answer is that nobody knows and I really, really hope so because many of us amended our holidays last year in the hope of some sunshine and relaxation this year. With the news of the numbers having already been vaccinated, it is very possible.

A flash of green caught my eye near Cygnet Park. Walking closer it could clearly be seen to be a green woodpecker but not in its usual Hampton woodland habitat. It seemed strange that it had flown into a more urban Hampton environment, perhaps from the woodland area around Tear Drop Lake. The last I saw of it was flying over the roof of the DeafBlind Centre. The green woodpecker is the largest of the three woodpeckers that breed in Britain; the other two being the great and lesser spotted woodpeckers. It is a darker green on the upper part of its body and a paler green underneath. Its red-topped head makes it distinctive. Unlike the spotted woodpeckers green woodpeckers rarely drum on tree trunks to communicate, perhaps due to their weaker beaks. This relative weakness also means that they tend to chisel into already soft wood, rather than into harder tree trunks, to create a hole for nesting in. They have quite a loud, laughing type call known as a ‘yaffle’. In the past it was often known as the ‘yaffle bird’ due to this distinctive call sound. They also had other even stranger names such as: yaffingale, laughing Betsey, weather

cock, rain bird, wet bird, nickel, Jack Eikle and nicker pecker. The references to rain are due to their once being thought to cause rainfall and also to call more when rain is due. The leaner months of winter deny the woodpecker its usual diet of ants, so they will seek out other insects, pine seeds and fruit instead. Although green woodpeckers often pair for life, outside of the breeding season they usually spend a lot of the time alone; although in winter they may roost near to each other. Often they will use the same hole for laying their eggs in each year. Once the chicks are ready to fly the parents will look after half of the brood each, helping them to find food. It is rare for young birds to move from where they were raised, so the green woodpecker I saw is likely to be one of Hampton’s own.

It will be different for a long time to come but to think we could be sitting on a beach in six months' time with a sangria is just what is keeping many of us going right now through these dark and wet winter days. Of course, we can look on our own doorstep and book a lodge, or a castle, or a cottage and visit somewhere we have never been before in the UK. Sales are coming through all the time wanting a Staycation this year, with stunning scenery in Scotland and Wales being the most popular, we also have the most beautiful coastline of Devon and Cornwall. Please get in touch and let's talk about what is possible this year. Sarah Hounsell Homeworker Hays Travel Consultant

younggazette Holme Church of England Primary Academy We are a small village school just outside of Yaxley. We are organised into four classes and currently we operate in two bubbles. As we step into 2021 we welcome seven new children and their families to our school community. Despite most of our children working from home, we continue to strive to deliver a full education to all of our pupils. The first week back in January we focussed on physical activity and mindfulness exercises. The Mental Health of adults and children is a priority for us at Holme and we teach children strategies for coping with worries and relaxing. Our fantastic staff are working extremely hard to deliver live teaching sessions to the children working at home. The children are coping brilliantly with this new way of learning and are becoming quite skilled at video calls and uploading work! Some of our pupils are receiving additional teaching sessions to make sure they don’t fall behind. The children are especially enjoying the end of day story times. The parents have been incredibly complimentary of our remote learning offer.

We have around 20% of our children working in school. These pupils are well supported by their class teacher and those in Key Stage 2 have access to their own Chromebook. In January we had new playground markings as well as new break time equipment. This has been very exciting and the children have enjoyed utilising these. Around school we have been busy enhancing the learning environment using our artistic skills. Mrs Thomas (Head of School)

Learning at home Your child is home from school, and you are providing the bulk of the support for their learning. At the same time, you are working. Here are some tips to help you balance their needs and yours. Structure – you are not school, so cut yourself some slack. Schedule in hours for them to be learning, as well as hours when they’ll have downtime. Start the child off on their task, then encourage them to complete it as independently as possible. This may buy you some precious time. Learn through play – most children prefer to play rather than learn, but learning can be slid into play and leisure activities. Creating a game, with cards (think Top Trumps) or a board game, can involve maths, writing, art and design. An ongoing project of some sort, or investigation, can take your child considerable time, and cover many aspects of learning. Life skills - learning skills such as cooking, or cleaning is valid. Planning a menu, then creating a shopping list is useful, as is learning about money, bank accounts, savings, and budgeting. Explain what bills are regularly paid, and how – and why. You - be kind to yourself, and remember that your best effort is enough, under the circumstances. Peterborough South First Class Learning. Tips for Home Schooling Home schooling is at the front of most parents minds at the moment. Whether you’re working from home, furloughed or still going out to work. The idea of home schooling is pretty daunting. So, here’s our top tips on how to get the most out of your child’s home learning experience. 1. Organisation: It might seem pretty obvious, but the first thing you should think about is drawing up a timetable, making sure your child’s day is varied. Secondly, you want to make sure that they have a quiet and dedicated space for learning and that they have everything they need, e.g. pens, paper, calculator, protractor.

4. Allow for breaks. Remember 20/20/20, for every 20 minutes of working on a screen, you should turn and look at something 20 feet away, for 20 seconds. Also, a short 5-10 minute break between each subject can help with focus.

2. Keep it relaxed and fun, allow some freedom of choice. We all learn better when we enjoy what we do.

5. Making learning relevant to everyday tasks and life skills. This can be anything from working out/weighing out how much of an ingredient is needed for a recipe or calculating change from a supermarket shop.

3. Children can achieve a lot in a short period of time. 15 minutes of concentrated effort is better than one hour of stress and struggle. Do not confuse quantity with quality.

6. Call in the 'experts': There are numerous resources out there, whether it’s BBC Bitesize, online forums, or friends and family. If you don’t know the answer to something, find someone who does.

Here at Kip McGrath we employ tutors who are qualified and experienced teachers and can help support your child’s home learning during these tough times. Visit kipmcgrath.co.uk/Peterborough-south for more details.

DISCOVERING

The art pupils at Hampton College have been working really hard and deserve applause for not only coping with a very difficult and different year but also producing some outstanding work, I'm sure you'll agree. Here's a selection of work created by our year 10, 11, 12 and 13 pupils.

Folksworth Pre-school At Folksworth Preschool we have been busy getting the children and the preschool involved in activities to benefit the local community. It is important for children to understand kindness and helping others, especially when times are difficult. Over the Christmas period our preschool supported CARESCO in Sawtry with donations for the food bank. Our children and families collected nearly 100 items for others in need, showing what the true message of community means. We wanted to bring Christmas cheer to Folksworth and this year we went with a Christmas tree (which was located outside the village hall) to try to bring a smile to all. This was purchased from a group raising money for Sue Ryder, as a charity we understand how hard it is to raise money and we wanted to be able to help another Charity.

This term we opened our doors to the children in our neighbouring community who needed a preschool placement at very short notice. We donated our old printer to a family homeschooling. When we pull together we can lighten the burden others face and make life that little bit easier for someone who is struggling. By showing our children what community spirit means and the different ways in which we can help each other, we will ensure that our community thrives for future generations to come. Niki Wilson

Daniel, said that, as has been the case for many people, the lockdown wasn’t easy for him, but losing the weight was the one thing he could achieve and control with consultant Scott and the Slimming Group making the difference. 'I stayed committed to losing weight, especially after what’s been a really tough year for all of us' explained Daniel. 'As a man, joining a slimming group is quite a nerve racking decision, yet I can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made Slimming World has changed my life for the better, and I love that I can run around after my son and go for nice long walks with my family. I definitely feel fitter and healthier now'. Both Zoe and Daniel found that the virtual groups were a massive help to them and loved the meal plans which meant that no food was forbidden and they’ve never gone hungry.

Scott Smith, who runs the Hampton Slimming World groups which Zoe and Daniel attend, says that he’s 'extremely proud of both slimmers’, adding that 'both have come so far since the first time they walked through my group doors. Watching them transform into confident new people has been inspiring to see. Zoe’s loving life with her friends and partner and Daniel loves being the hands-on Dad. They both are brimming with confidence.' 'I’ve no doubt that they’ll inspire other people to lose weight too and show that whether you’ve got a little or a lot of weight to lose – especially given the links between COVID-19 and obesity and the impact of lockdown has had on our weight. Zoe and Daniel have shown that slimming down does not only improve your health, but can also make a big difference to how you feel about yourself and really boost your confidence. Zoe and Daniel are both happier, healthier and fitter, and every week the group love hearing about their progress. Zoe has blown everyone away with how much she’s changed and how different she now looks and Daniel is a whiz in the kitchen now, so it’s great to find out what he’s been cooking up every week.' The Hampton Slimming World groups are held virtually whilst in the lockdown on Tues/Thurs afternoons & Fri/Sat mornings (see advert above left). To join or find out more call Scott on 077343 64138. legallybinding More cohabiting than marrying! Over the last decade, statistics show that there has been an increase of 25.8% in the number of cohabiting couple families within the UK, which is a much faster growth than the number of married couples. The number of same-sex couple families has grown by more than 50% since 2015 as well, many of whom will also be unmarried. This is not a new theme but one that bears repeating as there still seems to be so much ignorance out there about the status of cohabitation. Basically, there is no status in the family law context. Yes, there are laws relating to financial orders for children, but they are available to married couples as well. For the cohabiting couple, if you are unmarried or not in a civil partnership, on the breakdown of your relationship you will have no right to share in any capital money unless held in a joint account, or any pension assets, or to receive any maintenance. In respect of property, unless you are a joint owner of your home or any other property or business, it could be very difficult to establish a beneficial right to any equity in such assets. It should also be remembered that, once you are married, the starting point for sharing is 50%, whether or not there is a trust deed which specifies holding the property in unequal shares. So if you are not going to marry, do consider a cohabitation agreement that can go some way to filling the gaps in your rights for financial provision if your relationship ends.

Limited Company’s and Directors' Loan Accounts Enquiries and checks by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) into the tax position of family and owner-managed companies often involve a review of loan accounts of the director shareholders (often referred to as ‘directors’ loan accounts’ (DLAs)). by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants This is particularly the case if DLAs are (or have been) overdrawn during the period under review.

What are they looking for? HMRC recognises that DLAs are a potential source of additional tax under the ‘loans to participators’ rules (CTA 2010, s 455 and following), and possibly also a benefit-in-kind on the director (ITEPA 2003, s 175). HMRC will commonly ask for a detailed analysis of the DLA, showing dates of debits and credits. Aside from the additional tax liabilities mentioned above, a DLA analysis may reveal (for example) failure to notify liability to a section 455 charge, ‘bed and breakfasting’ transactions, or failure by the company to apply PAYE at the correct time to bonuses credited to the DLA. A case highlights the position to keep “proper” records as not all companies produce DLAs in the level of detail that can be requested by HMRC.(Matharu Delivery Service Ltd v Revenue and Customs [2019] UKFTT 553 (TC), HMRC subsequently pointed out in this case that a DLA should be fully itemised and in chronological order.

Directors and shareholders be aware and take note: HMRC might rewrite a DLA following a tax enquiry or investigation if none are available from the company (e.g. where the director of a closely-controlled company has misappropriated funds). The tribunal in the above case considered that where HMRC are enquiring into the tax affairs of a sole shareholder and their company (e.g. salary and dividends) information about the nature, size and timing of payments between the company and the individual were ‘reasonably required’ by HMRC.

Reminder: May we remind all readers that the filing date for tax returns was 31 January 2021 (as of 6 January 2021) and HMRC have confirmed there is no extension to the filing date or late filing penalties. However, HMRC have confirmed they will consider appeals against late filing penalties if it relates to COVID-19 reasons.

Give romance scammers the elbow as Valentine season approaches

APPROVED TRADERS

With the pandemic making it more and more difficult for lockdown lonely hearts to meet potential partners face to face – rogue romancers are looking to steal more than just their affections. The restrictions and Stay At Home message continue to force many people to feel more isolated, turning to dating apps to find love or companionship. It’s no suprise that user interaction on dating apps has soared over the past 10 months, and with February the season of love and romance – it is also a key date for fraudsters to step up their scams. Last year, UK victims of online romance fraud were conned out of more than an estimated £63 million by love rats posing as potential partners by using a fake profile and building what feels like a loving relationship. These people are experts at grooming their victims and their end-game is always about how much money they can extract. Some seven million UK residents are believed to be registered on dating sites, with Tinder taking the lion’s share of the market when it comes to online dating apps. At the end of March 2020, Tinder reported a record 3 billion “swipes” in a single day. There are a few simple steps to keep yourself, and your loved ones, safe: D Don't rush into an online relationship. Get to know the person, not the profile, ensuring you ask plenty of questions and it is paramount that you meet virtually in person via video chat to ensure those you are connecting with are genuine. A Analyse their profile. Protect yourself by confirming their identity. Check the person is genuine by putting the following into your search engine: their name, profile picture (by simply using a reverse image search) and any repeatedly used phrases, along with the term 'dating scam'. T Talk to your friends and family. Be wary of anyone who tells you not to tell others about them. Romance fraud involves grooming over a long period of time. Alienating a victim from their friends and family can make up part of that process. E Evade scams. Never send money or share your bank details with someone you've only met online. S Stay on the dating site messenger service. Fraudsters will often encourage their victims to use different communications channels that are often undetectable e.g., email or WhatsApp. Remember, don’t let your heart rule your head and, if you have not met in person or via a video chat, never:  Send any money  Purchase and send the codes on gift cards  Transfer money on their behalf  Take a loan out for them  Allow them access to your bank account  Invest your own money on their behalf or on their advice  Provide copies of your personal documents such as passports or driving licences  "Hold" money on their behalf (which is typically stolen) If you think you are a victim of romance fraud, contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040. For more information on this and other types of fraud, visit www.actionfraud.police.uk
