I’m sure if you had been asked this time last year what is important about Christmas, you might have said the decorations, the food, the presents, a visit to see Santa. If the question were to be asked this year, when we have had to face such challenging circumstances, I’m sure the top answer would be being able to spend time with family and friends. The truth is that Jesus would probably give the same answer. That’s what He would want to do: spend time with us. God wants to communicate with us. God could have shouted from heaven in a loud voice, but instead He came to earth. Jesus gave up the glories of heaven and came to us over 2000 years ago as a baby, born supernaturally. He came at God’s timing in fulfilment of many prophecies, born in the squalor of a stable in Bethlehem. “Emmanuel”, which means, 'God with us'. He brought a message of love and forgiveness. The first Christmas was the time and place where God pulled back the curtain so we could see His face. The invisible God became visible, the unknowable God became knowable. The true message of Christmas begins with Christ and makes all the difference in the world. It is a reliable message. It is a good news message. It is a personal message that changed lives 2000 years ago and still changes lives today. God wants a relationship with each and every one of us: we have the choice whether we want that relationship with Him. When that relationship starts, you discover that He is the most faithful of friends and is with you through all of life’s circumstances, both the good and the bad, and lockdown restrictions cannot keep Him out. Whatever Christmas might look like for you this year, may we take this opportunity to wish you a safe and blessed time. With our love and prayers, Sylvia and all at CSK Church x

Lakeside Healthcare You are twice as likely to be inactive if you are living with a long term health condition. 15 leading health and social care charities representing many of the 15 million people living with long term health conditions, along with the support from Sport England, have come together to create a unified voice and to develop a unique and important behaviour change. The campaign 'We Are Undefeatable' aims to change the misconception that those of us with long term health conditions can’t be active. It seeks to inspire and empower those of us who are least active to build physical activity into our lives in small chunks, in a way that long term health conditions allow, whilst celebrating every little victory. The campaign includes inspirational real-life experiences of people with long term health conditions getting active despite the ups, downs and unpredictability of their condition. hamptonhub What Disney+ means for streaming and the future of TV as we know it Earlier this year, Ofcom published some new research on our entertainment habits which revealed a staggering generational divide. While the over-65s are still devotees to traditional broadcast TV, for the younger generation, it is increasingly tuning out of traditionally scheduled channels. British under-35s are moving away from terrestrial and cable to streaming services like Netflix, Now TV, and Amazon Prime. Ofcom even found that a quarter of children (25%) say they have never once watched live TV! Streaming is already huge business and, with the launch of Disney+, the UK streaming market is growing at a phenomenal pace. With so many platforms, it can feel as though we’ve hit a saturation point where there is just too much content for anyone to keep up with. However, despite claims about peak TV and the seemingly endless supply of fantastic new shows, the reality is that this is only the beginning. We are at the start of an entertainment revolution which will see technology – such as VR and interactive storytelling – fundamentally alter what we perceive TV to be, forever. However, its success depends significantly on the infrastructure underpinning it. Video streaming consumes large volumes of data, especially when potentially millions of viewers are watching simultaneously. To put this into perspective, nearly half of UK homes have a subscription to at least one of Amazon, Netflix or Now TV. Working to ensure the country doesn’t get left behind in this entertainment revolution is one of many reasons we’re so excited to be rolling out full fibre connectivity across Ipswich, providing future proof, gigabit capable, ultra-reliable internet to meet everyone’s streaming needs.

Like a Black Mirror Episode One of the biggest changes in the way we think about TV is the introduction of interactive programming. For example, in December 2018 Netflix launched a film unlike any other – Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. The plot centred around a young programmer working on adapting a fantasy choose-your-own-adventure novel into a video game – in and of itself nothing too special. What made Bandersnatch unique was the fact that it was an interactive film with an astonishingly intricate and non-linear plot that put viewers in charge of the protagonist’s decisions. It was an enthralling mash-up of film, TV show and video game all in one. Tellingly, in addition to its two Emmy wins, Bandersnatch also won the ‘Best Game Writing’ award at the 2019 Nebula Awards. A few years ago, live streaming something as ambitious as Bandersnatch would have been unimaginable. Now, creating a choose-your-own-adventure programme feels entirely possible and something that other streaming services will be looking to do themselves in a bid to avoid falling behind in the innovation race. Outside of interactive TV, the other technology that is set to change TV is Virtual Reality (VR). Already, there are a gaggle of VR TV creators looking to offer an even more immersive experience for viewers by broadcasting via headsets like Oculus. This is being coupled with the maturation of haptic technology, meaning that soon we won’t just be able to live inside our TV shows, we’ll be able to touch and feel them too. It’s exciting to think about the stories that artists and directors like Black Mirror’s Charlie Brooker, Mindhunter’s David Fincher, or Breaking Bad’s Vince Gilligan might create for us with such technology behind them.

Behind the Scenes New media technologies like this are going to irrevocably change what we think of as TV over the next decade, but only if the infrastructure is in place to allow it. Currently, much of the UK has legacy copper networks which simply aren’t fast or reliable enough to handle our demand for entertainment. Ultimately, copper networks were never built to cope with such demands, especially considering that Netflix, alone, is already responsible for 15% of the world’s total downstream bandwidth. The answer to this conundrum is full fibre – something which CityFibre is investing in bringing to cities across the UK, including Peterborough. This is capable of streaming vast amounts of data at gigabit speeds with virtually no lag, meaning that everything from live sports to haptic television can be watched in flawless 4K HD. The state of the British TV industry has never looked better – from Fleabag to Succession, British showrunners are behind so many of the megahits in recent years. Yet as Bandersnatch shows, there is so much more scope for inventive storytelling. The only limits to this thriving industry’s imagination is the infrastructure it depends on to share its work with its followers. With full fibre beneath our streets, who knows what will be dominating screens, headsets and awards ceremonies in the years to come.

RESCH EDUL ED

Peterborough Cathedral’s Christmas Craft and Gift Market, which was due to take place on 20 and 21 November, has been rescheduled for Friday 4 and Saturday 5 December 2020 at the same times. The Cathedral has been in touch with shoppers who had tickets for November to say that their booking has been transferred to the new dates, or offering them the option of a refund. Anyone who has not already booked is encouraged to do so now, so that they can look forward to a delightful, if calmer and more socially distant than usual, Christmas shopping experience at the end of lockdown. Should lockdown be extended into December and the market have to be cancelled, full ticket refunds will be offered then, so shoppers have nothing to lose by booking in! Pre-booking is essential to manage numbers and avoid queuing and the booking link is https://www.peterborough-cathedral. org.uk/143/section.aspx/142/christmas_ market_2020#book The Market stalls will be spread over a wide area within the Cathedral to allow plenty of space, and the now familiar rules of wearing

a face covering, sanitising hands on entry and exit, and following a strict one way system will be in place. Amongst the unique range of gifts and hand crafted items on sale will be jewellery, glassware, candles, textiles and lots more. The beautiful Cathedral interior is an inspiring space in which to do some Christmas shopping and this year is no exception. The opening hours of the market are: Friday 4 December: 10am–5pm and 7–9pm Saturday 5 December: 10am–5pm Due to the change of dates, there are currently opportunities for stallholders. Anyone who would like to enquire about a stall is invited to contact Natalie.freeman@ peterborough-cathedral.org.uk for details. Please note that we cannot accept telephone enquiries at present.

SPECIAL

with our fresh, needle retaining, Nordmann & Fraser fir trees

Our friendly team will help you choose your tree from our large selection, then trim, net and load it into you car ... it couldn’t be easier!

Looking After Your Christmas Tree Here’s some handy tips for making sure your tree is well cared for and that you can enjoy it for as long as possible: Position your tree away from open flames and heat sources - it is a tree after all! When putting your tree up, leave it in the net, just pulling it clear of the trunk, set in the stand and add water. Lastly, remove the net over the top of the tree. This way you’re not fighting with the tree to get it in the stand! Keep your tree in fresh water at all times. Peterborough Christmas Trees will prepare the base for you (like you cut the stem off flowers) and sell water holding stands. A larger tree can easily go through 0.5 litres per day!

If your tree runs out of water, it begins to heal itself after a few hours which slows its ability to take up more water. Not the end of the world but better avoided. If you have a pot grown tree, the secret here is not to water too much as during winter, they reserve energy in the roots and don’t feed the needles. So just stop the soil from drying out - that’s it! Use a wine bottle or similar to top up the water as the long neck makes it easier to pour under the branches. Finally enjoy it & be sure to send us a photo!

Of course, we must consider Covid-19. Our site is outdoors with plenty of space which keeps things easier, but we will maintain social distancing and wear face visors. Hand sanitizer will be at the pay point and in busy periods we may operate an entry system to limit numbers. Can’t come and see us? Christmas

Step into

Tis the Season to be jolly, fa la la la la, la la la la... Christmas is by far the best time of year here in the Northern Hemisphere, with morning frosts and dew, the 1-in-a-million chance of snow settling on the ground, Michael Buble and Mariah Carey defrosted and belting out their Christmas Hits; we all know what Mariah wants for Christmas, and the designated Christmas Movie channels showing every Christmas B Movie available. Christmas Movies seem to be some of the best about, and there is a lot of debate about what defines a Christmas movie (for the record, if it is set at Christmas, contains Christmas music and it is mentioned that it is Christmas in the movie, then it's a Christmas movie, which means DIE HARD is 100% a Christmas movie) but 1 thing is for certain, we all have our favourites! Whilst these lists are contentious to say the list, we all find a favourite in every list. Here are some of my personal favourites:

T Santa Claus The Movie:

David Huddleston was my Santa growing up, along with Dudley Moore's Patch and John Lithgows manipulative B.Z.. This is an absolute classic Christmas film for everyone to enjoy!

T Elf:

What Jon Favreau has done to Marvel and Star Wars, he did for Christmas Movies with the enigmatic Elf, arguably one of the best Christmas films ever, along with it being Will Ferrell's best performance. Cult status achieved!

T The Polar Express:

This is one of my personal favourites, with the animation and the soundtrack being one of the best ever. A brilliant story adds to the charm of this amazing film.

T The Santa Clause:

Tim Allen shines as a stuffy businessman who accidentally causes Santa to fall off the roof, thus taking over and coming to terms with his new job as Santa. Excellent supporting cast and storytelling.

T The Christmas Chronicles:

Kurt Russell excels as a tell-it-as-it-is Santa, helping to bring some 2belief” back to a non-believer, with some excellent songs and a brilliant cast to go with it. Netflix hit the jackpot with this one, with the sequel just released. A cult classing in the making.

T Home Alone:

I genuinely don't believe I need to explain this one right?

T Jingle All The Way:

Arnie races against time to buy his son the must-have toy for Christmas, coming up against a disgruntled Postman, a neighbour with amorous intentions on his wife and a Reindeer with its sights set on him. Hilarity ensues!

T National Lampoons Christmas Vacation:

Christmas isn't the same without Clark. W Griswold screeching about how terrible his boss is whilst in full melt down, a “killer squirrel” leaping from the tree and Randy Quaid dumping his RV's loo into the street drains. Comedy Gold. Other notable mentions for some excellent Christmas films are: Trapped in Paradise, Scrooged, Klaus Last Christmas, Love Actually, Deck The Halls Christmas with the Kranks, The Holiday The Grinch (Not the new one! Jim Carey's genius turn is the ONLY one!)

Well, it’s that time of year when the big fella comes down the chimney and spreads some Christmas cheer and, boy, do we need it right now! Sarah Hounsell

explore dream discover with

A very tough time for the travel industry this year and certainly not one that I ever want to go through again. It seems that booking a package holiday with a travel agent may have seemed old hat at the beginning of the year but it now appears to be back in favour as people feel safer and more secure, and I could not agree more. We don’t cost any more than what you might find with an online package holiday yet we do all the hard work for you. Also, should things not improve then at least you have someone there to fight your corner and get the refund for you or amend the holiday to another time. We are now all looking at what will happen next year. City breaks seem to be popular and also a staycation is the new going away with amazing lodges or cottages with hot tubs in some beautiful destinations including on the beach or maybe the middle of the Dales is your thing.

My advice to anyone is to book a package holiday with a deposit for next summer and I am pretty confident it will change, and many people will get away next year. If Covid has taught us anything it’s that time is precious, and we need to make as many memories as we can with those close to us. Don’t waste time wondering, if we should do something, JUST DO IT! Please take a look at my Facebook page to get an idea of what I can do and feel free to look at my reviews too on FEEFO which are 100%. Lastly, please let me wish you all a very SAFE and MERRY Christmas and a prosperous NEW YEAR xx Sarah Hounsell Homeworker Hays Travel Consultant

Wildlife Trust - past, present & future This has been such a tough year for everyone, but nature and wildlife has been there for us at a time when we needed it most. Nature reserves have provided havens for anyone looking to connect to the sanctuary and sanctity of nature, and throughout the year seasonal reminders help bring a sense of hope and continuity that only the natural world can offer, from the arrival of swallows and swifts in spring, wildflower meadows blooming in summer and wonderful woodlands in autumn. Seasonal winter visitors are taking up residence at the Wildlife Trust's nature reserves around Peterborough, with beautiful redwings being spotted at Dogsthorpe Star Pit from November. These splendid red speckled member of the thrush family fly in from semi arctic regions, some from Iceland, others from Russia and Scandinavia, feeding on fruit and berries in hedges and trees. The reserve has witnessed some wonderful bird sightings this year – from

majestic marsh harriers to elusive bitterns which hide in the reed beds. Reed buntings and warblers galore abound here also – as they do at nearby Lattersey nature reserve.

Christmas and beyond So anyone looking for a thoughtful eco present, as a way of 'paying nature back' might consider gift membership of the Wildlife Trust, a present to last throughout the year and an introduction to the discovery of wildlife on the doorstep. Members receive Local Wildlife magazine (children's version is Wildlife Watch) three times a year, information on events, local groups, walks, talks via newsletters – but the biggest benefit of all is knowing that local wildlife in the area, and all the conservation work involved, will be helped and maintained.

The Trust's work supports local wildlife in the area from protecting habitats on nature reserves and in the wider countryside, along with all the species which depend on these places.www. wildlifebcn.org/become-member

2021 Wildlife Calendar Earlier this year the Wildlife Trust's 2020 photography competition drew a record numbers of entries, and judging was held over the summer bringing plenty of choice to create a stunning 2021 wildlife calendar. It's not too late to order (if you're quick!) - the calendar can still be purchased for £8 via email at cambridgeshire@ wildlifebcn.org or call 01954 713543 and leave a message. Postage & packaging £1.50 for 1; £2 for up to 3; for other quantities, please enquire. www.wildlifebcn.org/calendar-2021

Long Nights As we move into December the days grow to their shortest peaking with the winter solstice. A time of minimal plant growth and precious little bug activity. But recent winters have been warmer and wetter rather than cold and dry. This warmth means many normally hibernating bugs will still be active. Unless the temperature drops below and stays below five degrees Celsius hibernation is not possible. This in turn means normally dormant bees are on the wing foraging for food in the short daylight hours. Indeed queen bumblebees that should be hibernating have been known to start new winter nests. It is questionable how viable these winter colonies are since flowers are in short supply. In parts of New Zealand wasp nests no longer die out in winter but grow ever bigger all year round often

reaching a diameter of more than two metres – could this be the future for our wasps too. Also active in these warmer climes are slugs and snails and they of course do just two things eat and breed. Whilst most feast on decaying plant matter others do prefer fresher matter bad news for autumn sown beans or other overwintering plants.

This poses big questions for all as to how best can we help our wildlife cope with these changing times. For the pollinators we need to look to ensure year round flowering of plants. Early bulbs such as snowdrops and crocus, winter jasmine, viburnum tinus, rosemary and perhaps leave a few brassicas standing to go to seed. For slug and snail control we may need to rethink how we feed the winter birds to encourage them to forage more.

foodguide Christmas dinner on a budget A brilliantly simple and quick roast turkey with trimmings. Frozen turkey breast joints are fantastic value and cut back on waste. Make it extra special with sliced clementine and thyme and serve with a rich red wine gravy. Prep: 30 minutes Cooking Time: Just over two hours Serves: Six Ingredients 1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil. 1.5kg/3lb 5oz frozen turkey breast joint, thawed overnight. 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaves. 6 rashers smoked streaky bacon. 1 clementine or satsuma, sliced. 15g/½oz butter. 4–5 fresh bay leaves. Few fresh thyme leaves. Salt & freshly ground black pepper. For the gravy 20g/¾oz plain flour. To serve 100ml/3½fl oz red wine. 450ml/16fl oz chicken stock, 500g/1lb 2oz carrots, cut into batons. made with 1 chicken stock cube. 500g/1lb 2oz small Brussel sprouts trimmed. 1 tbsp redcurrant jelly. 40g/1½oz butter. Method 1 Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Pour the oil into a sturdy roasting  tin. Place the turkey joint in a roasting tin. Season with a little salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. 2 Sprinkle with the thyme leaves. Top with the bacon and sliced clementine or  satsuma. Dot with the butter and cover tightly with a piece of kitchen foil. Roast for 1 hour. 3 Remove the foil, increase the oven temperature to 200C/180C/Fan 6 and  continue cooking for a further 40 minutes, or until the bacon is crisp and the turkey is thoroughly cooked through. 4 Transfer the turkey to a warmed platter. Cover with foil and a tea towel and  leave to rest for 15 minutes. 5 For the gravy, put the roasting tin on the hob over medium heat and stir in the  flour. Add the wine and cook for 15–20 seconds, stirring constantly. 6 Gradually add the stock, stirring all the time. Bring the liquid to a simmer, stir in  the redcurrant jelly and cook for 2 minutes, or until thickened and glossy. Season to taste, strain carefully (the tin will be extremely hot) through a sieve into a saucepan, add any juices that have released from the turkey as it has rested and keep warm until ready to serve. 7 Boil the carrots and Brussels sprouts in separate pans of boiling water. Once  cooked to your liking, drain and toss with the butter and plenty of salt and freshly ground black pepper. 8 Garnish the turkey with bay leaves and fresh thyme sprigs. Carve into slices  and serve with the hot gravy and vegetables. Recipe tips Make sure the turkey breast is thoroughly defrosted before cooking, this will take about 2 days in the fridge.

Julia, Coffee Shop Manager Chimes Coffee Shop Happy Christmas from Chimes Coffee Shop! We look forward to welcoming you in the run up to Christmas. During lockdown we have been able to operate a Chimes Take Away service on Wednesday to Saturday from 10.00am-2.00pm, alongside our pre-order service for favourites such as our special afternoon tea box and cake range. Customers can check our popular Facebook page for updates on what we are offering and for our opening hours in December and the New Year. We would like to thank customers for their wonderful support and to wish you all a peaceful and joyous Christmas and look forward to seeing you soon.

How to choose those Christmas wines On the table. The ideal answer, I think, is to have two or three bottles on the table to cater for every taste. If we’re talking turkey, that should include a white as well as a red. I’d certainly have a relatively young red alongside a more mature one. Beef is actually much kinder to a good claret or similar. Goose, I think, needs something with greater acidity to cut through the fat. An Italian red, such as a good Chianti or Brunello. Veggie options like nut roasts think in terms of vibrant, Rhône-ish reds. How to kick off the big day? Well it has to be fizz, really, doesn’t it? These days that might well be English sparkling wine or, for non-drinkers, sparkling tea (Fortnum and Masson). Cava or Crémant, Prosecco. Another challenge over Christmas is to prevent your reds getting too warm, especially if you decant them in advance. It’s best to keep them in an unheated room or wherever you normally store them until shortly before you serve them. Whites, on the other hand (especially richer whites such as Chardonnay), are often allowed to get too cold – especially if you’ve been super-organised and put them in the fridge earlier in the day. But don’t forget to chill them, obviously. Source: Decanter Website

Wines to pair with Christmas du ck and goose: • Pinot Noir • Mature Chât eauneuf-du-Pa pe • Fuller styles of Beaujolais, such as Morgo n Cru • Barbera • Nebbiolo • Rosé Champa gne • Chardonnay with some oak agei ng • White Bordea ux • Chenin Blan c • Off-dry Ries ling

Lakota (Lover of Nature) During really cold, icy winters have you ever envied the bats, dormice and hedgehogs who find a lovely cosy place to doze away the darkness of winter? These three groups are the only British mammals that truly hibernate; that is they lower their body temperature and their heart rate. Other biological processes also take place such as chemical changes in the body. Overall it is quite a sensible way to spend the period when food and warmth are scarce. It was only recently that a hedgehog decided to build its nest under a stone slab in our Vale garden. It was quite intriguing to see it stuff leaves into its mouth and drag them under the slab. I hope that it proves a suitable cosy place for it to spend the winter. I imagine that if we have regular hedgehog visitors to our garden then there must be quite a few more around Hampton. Their numbers are declining (a third have been lost since the millennium!) so if we do have a community here then we need to look after them. Building a home made shelter for them: a few bricks made into a four walled square with a small gap

left as an entrance, and a covering slab overhead would be ideal – and some dog or cat food left out for them would be appreciated, plus a saucer full of water. Or even a few logs piled up with space underneath would help. But there is so much more wildlife that doesn’t hibernate, including, of course, birds. And December being the month we celebrate Christmas we cannot forget the joyful sight of the robin around Hampton. There seems to be so many around our community. The reason they are associated with Christmas, and appear on so many Christmas cards, is because in the 1800s postmen wore bright red uniforms in honour of the Crown, because red is considered a royal colour. The Victorian postmen in their red-breasted coats resembled the much-loved robin and thus earned them the nickname: Robins. So although some wildlife will be snoozing the winter away we still have much else to enjoy during the Christmas season; particularly the cheerful robin, who can even be heard singing at night near Hampton street lamps.

younggazette Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School The children have enjoyed exploring different media and materials to create their very own festive pictures. Christmas is a very exciting time and this year is no exception. The children will be having lots more fun participating in more art and crafts and lots of singing of Christmas songs to get everyone into the festive spirit.

Hampton Vale Primary Academy At Hampton Vale Primary Academy, we understand the importance of the physical and mental fitness of each child.

A big thank you to all our families for your ongoing support throughout these challenging times.

Therefore, our curriculum involves Forest School, which enables for the children to develop their confidence and self-esteem through a vast range of outdoor activities. The children can explore the changes of the outside environment through hands-on learning sessions such as sensory walks, bug hunting and shelter building. Consequently, these experiences enable for children to constantly use their vivid imagination and input this during the sessions. Recently, Vale Forest has enabled the children to learn how to keep safe when they are close to the fire pit. The importance of this was demonstrated to the children through the celebration of Guy Fawkes night, enabling them to collect the wood for the fire whilst applying the safety techniques leant. Due to the success the children showed of their safety awareness around the fire. Within the coming weeks, the children will experience campfire cooking sessions in Vale Forest school. We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, and we look forward to welcoming our families both old and new in the New Year. We have limited spaces left to start with us this academic year; we are now booking places onwards from September 2021. Please contact the nursery for enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk for more information.

Holme Church of England Primary Academy We are a small village school, just outside of Yaxley. Mrs Thomas (Head of School) As we near Christmas, it gives us the opportunity to reflect on the positives in our school community. The children have settled back well and have enjoyed reconnecting with their friends, especially at break times. The teachers and support staff have adapted well to the many new safety rules and are being creative to ensure lessons remain fun and engaging. The children are now grouped into Bubbles and enter and leave at different times. The School Community have adapted brilliantly to changes and followed the rules to keep our ‘small but mighty’ school safe. This term we have adapted our events to include a virtual ‘Harvest Festival’, virtual ‘parent meetings’ and virtual Christmas events. Being a Church school, Christmas is an important festival for us and we are working hard to make it as enjoyable and ‘normal’ as possible. The children will be joining other schools for a virtual ‘Christingle Service’ and experiencing a virtual pantomime. To replace the daily face to face conversations with staff, we have introduced a whole school communication system called Class Dojo. This allows messages to be sent between home and school. 100% of our families are engaging with this app and finding it beneficial. Please visit our website for our virtual tour. www.holme.cambs.sch.uk Do message the school if you have any questions, specific to your child.

fade during the pandemic Maintaining friendships when you can’t meet up is tough. A quarter of people in Great Britain have no-one they can call a 'best friend' and nearly one-in-eight admit to having no friends at all. As the pandemic continues and interactions with friends become more virtual, even those who have never had to worry about friendships are noticing friendship fade. We like to think that our friendships are based on shared interests and personality traits, but mostly they are based on proximity, consistency, and communication. We’re all feeling jaded and lacking in energy right now. It’s no surprise we’re struggling to summon the motivation to interact with others. Friendships falter during sustained periods of radio silence and at the moment we lack the new and shared experiences, the grievances and personal victories that previously we would have dissected at length over a bottle of wine.

CSK Church, Silver Hill

In addition, we all have vastly different pandemic experiences. Some of us are working from quiet well-ordered homes; others are jobless, struggling financially, or trying to arrange near impossible childcare for who kids may be quarantining due to school outbreaks. Some may even have lost

family members. These differences put a strain on the closest friendships, and it can feel as though we’re drifting apart. However, with a bit of effort we can reconnect. Many friendships are based around a hobby. Craft sessions and book clubs moved easily online, but sport and music groups are more difficult to transfer…choirs don’t really work online, and you certainly can’t play badminton remotely. It’s good to try to get together socially though. Try an online quiz or watch a film together. You already have one interest in common so there will probably be other connections, and repeated interactions prime us to be friends with one another. It can feel risky to reach out, but scientists have proven that people who initiate interactions are less likely to be lonely over time, and they’re more likely to be satisfied in their relationships. Many people assume that if their friend doesn’t initiate then they’re not interested, but everybody’s afraid of rejection. We tend to underestimate how much someone we have interacted with likes us, especially if we’re self-critical. It’s called ‘The liking gap’. Also, we tend to think that we have to be cool, fascinating, or smart, but if you treat others well and make them feel valued, they are more likely to want to be friends. If someone doesn’t respond, don’t be despondent; they might suffer with social anxiety, or be overwhelmed with work, or struggling with other problems in their lives. Think of reaching out like exercising a muscle; the more you do it the more likely you’ll make and maintain friendships. Put video chats in your diary, in the same way you would schedule a dinner date. Face time is the closest thing we have to real life face-to-face connections right now. It’s not perfect but it will help keep friendships strong.

Merry

sharing

Christmas

For those families where the parents are living apart and will be separated over the Christmas period, every effort should be made to reach an agreement over the sharing of time so that both mother and father may spend part of the main festive days with the children. The highlight days are usually considered to be Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and Boxing Day, and some parents like to share the time over New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day as well. The Family Court does not tend to get over excited about contact at Christmas, as professionals know that its importance is far greater for the parents than the children. The children will want to spend time with both mum and dad, and probably will be keen to get two sets of presents as well, but the special quality of the festive day in question is unlikely to be of great significance for children. So it is up to the parents to be grown up about sharing Christmas time and always put the children first. This is also a unique Christmas, with Covid restrictions very likely. The rules are still the same as they have been since March 2020, namely that separated parents can travel between households and have children stay overnight for the purposes of contact. Mediation is the best way of resolving children issues between separated parents and if you need legal advice, contact a family law specialist.

Airbnb reporting property rental details to HMRC You may have seen in the newspapers that Airbnb will share data with HMRC about the earnings of hosts (those who let out property) on its UK platform in the years 2017/18 and 2018/19. It is anticipated that HMRC will use this data to open enquiries into the tax affairs of individuals who have not declared letting income for 2017/18 and 2018/19. The deadline for opening an enquiry into a self-assessment return for 2018/19 is 31 January 2021, if the return was issued and submitted on time. The discovery rules allow HMRC to go back much further, potentially up to 20 years in some cases if the property income has not previously been reported.

Rent Covered by Rent a Room Relief For many property owners the rental income will be tax free if it is within the £7,500 rent a room relief and will not even need to be reported. This applies where room(s) in the taxpayer’s main residence are rented out, typically to lodgers. Where the house is owned jointly, they would qualify for £3,750 each tax free. This £7,500 exemption would also apply where the property owners are temporarily absent and rent out their property, for example a house in SW19 during the Wimbledon fortnight. A few years ago, it was proposed that such lettings would not qualify but the legislation was dropped and the CGT lettings relief restriction was introduced in the latest Finance Act instead.

Bring your tax affairs up to date 2018/19 tax returns can be amended by the taxpayer up until 31 January 2021. Where the omitted property income or gain relates to earlier tax years the taxpayer should consider disclosing using HMRC’s let property campaign. If this affects you, we can assist you in putting together the details that HMRC require.

2020 Self Assessment Tax Returns May we remind all readers that the filing date for tax returns is still the 31 January 2021. A number of professionals have asked for this to be extended until 31 March 2021, but as at 3 November 2020, nothing has been announced yet.

MAY WE ALSO WISH ALL OUR CLIENTS, READERS, NEW AND OLD, A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR.

staysafe Make sure you stay savvy, not sorry when it comes to online Christmas shopping Let's face it – shopping at the moment isn’t the kind of retail therapy we once knew and enjoyed, particularly given the recent second lockdown and limited access to non-essential goods.

HANDY NUMBERS • A NUMBER FOR EVERYTHING TO ADVERTISE IN HANDY NUMBERS • CALL 07917 855 956 APPROVED TRADERS

For many people, going to the shops for basics is seen more of a necessity or even a chore; so it will come as no surprise that an increase in online shopping in 2020 has also meant a rise in scams. Figures show that online shopping and auction fraud shot up by a third in 2020, with increased spending during lockdown highlighted as the main cause. Interestingly, four in five online shopping fraud victims were under the age of 50, with those in their Twenties being the most likely to be victim of online shopping fraud. And while ‘tis the season of Christmas shopping, the festive fraudsters will be looking to make mischief and bring misery to millions. However, there are some wise words from Action Fraud when it comes to staying safe.

Choosing where you shop Carry out your own research if you are buying something from a company or person you don’t know or trust. If you decide to go ahead with the purchase, use a credit card if you have one, as most major credit card providers insure online purchases. Some other payment methods do provide good consumer protection, but they aren't obliged to provide the same protection as a credit card provider.

Keep your devices up to date Make sure you install the latest software and app updates. These usually contain important security updates that can protect you against fraud and identity theft. Just turn on automatic updates so your device will update itself in future.

Secure your email account Having a strong password is the first defence against cyber criminals who are looking to hack into your email account to steal valuable information like bank details and the logins for your other online accounts. They will use things like your address or date of birth when trying to crack your passwords. A strong password for your email should be one you don’t re-use anywhere else. This way, even if a hacker manages to access your email, they won't also be able to log into your online bank account.

Take care with links in emails and texts If the offer looks too good to be true, then it probably is. Be aware that links may come from fake websites, designed to steal your money and personal details. Not all links are bad, but if you are unsure don't use the link, go separately to the website. Turn on two-factor authentication (2FA) To give any online account additional protection, where possible, you should turn on two-factor authentication (2FA). 2FA is a way for the service you're using to double check that you really are the person you claim to be, when logging in.

Don't give away too much information Remembering the name of your favourite film or stating your city of birth aren’t needed for buying goods online, so only fill the mandatory details of forms when making a purchase. These are usually marked with an asterisk*. If you can avoid it, don’t create an account on a new site unless you’re going to use that site a lot in the future. You can usually checkout as a guest to make your purchase.

When things go wrong Scams can be incredibly sophisticated and hard to spot. If you think you may have been taken in by a bogus website, take a note of the website's address, then close down your internet browser. You can report the details to www.actionfraud.police.uk and contact your bank to seek advice. Safe Local Trades would like to wish all their customers, members and suppliers a very Happy Christmas. Stay safe, in every way…
