Yaxley Flower Club Yaxley Flower Club celebrates its pearl anniversary in 2020 and we are proud to have achieved 30 years of fun, friendship and flowers We’ve made lots of new friends along the way and watched amazingly talented demonstrators share their skills and knowledge of flowers. We’ve listened to some very interesting speakers, staged practical evenings; where we all had a go at a simple arrangement, “Supermarket Sweep” when a few of our members arranged flowers which have been purchased at various local supermarkets. Following our AGM in March we know we’ll have as much fun in the year to come. We are looking forward to some traditional and contemporary themed evenings and other exciting events. We meet at Yaxley Royal British Legion Club on 3rd Thursday of each month (except August and December) at 7.30pm. For more information contact Jennie, 01733 243132

So many songs, whether ones we enjoyed singing from the last century, or more recent releases, are based around the subject of love Each one of us needs to be loved and to know we are loved. This is true in our physical and mental life as well as our emotional and spiritual life. Jesus Christ, when he lived on earth, never stopped loving and that love was pushed to the very limits of endurance. It wasn’t until love had run its full course, that men and women realised that the love of God, nailed to the cross, was all for them. No one could believe the unbelievable truth that God – God himself – would go that far for His children. To save his children, He gave His life. At Easter we celebrate the reconciling love of God. God and man reunited when Jesus conquered death and lived again. Good Friday means a death: Easter a resurrection. The death and resurrection, coming back to life, of Jesus, is at the very heart of Christianity, where new life and hope are born. Christians rejoice in the new beginning that Jesus offers to us all, rebirth, the promise of new life and eternal life. Loving relationships are at the heart of the Christian faith and it’s that love that we endeavour to share at Christ the Servant King (CSK) Church here in Hampton. If you’d like to find out more about the amazing love of God that took Jesus to the cross, and gives the opportunity for a new beginning, come and join us any Sunday morning at 10am. We’d love to welcome you – and there’s chocolate to enjoy on Easter Sunday too! A very happy Easter to you all.

Get the Call: Become an On-call Firefighter Register your Appliances Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging residents to register their appliances for a safer home in 2020 All you have to do is visit registermyappliance.org.uk, and register large appliances bought in the last 12 years. Registering your appliances can instantly improve safety in the home. It ensures that householders can be contacted swiftly if a safety repair is ever needed or if an item is recalled by the manufacturer, helping to prevent the risk of fire. With many households relying on appliances every day to handle essential chores, chill food and cook for their families, this quick task can give you peace of mind.

Book a Safe and Well Visit Did you know Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service offer free home safety visits to those who are most vulnerable in our community? Our visits cover fire safety in the home, falls prevention, staying well and warm and crime reduction. Call 0800 917 9994 or visit www.cambsfire.gov.uk/safeandwell to find out more and book a visit or make a referral.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit more on-call firefighters to help serve local communities across the county CFRS is looking for men and women from all backgrounds to become on-call firefighters and provide emergency cover from either their home or their workplace. On-call firefighters are a vital part of our Service and community. They respond to a wide range of incidents, from fighting fires, attending road traffic collisions, animal rescues to supporting other emergency services. In addition to responding to emergency incidents, our on-call firefighters support their communities by providing information and advice on a range of community safety topics. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit to being available plus additional payments for attending incidents and drill nights (one evening a week for two hours). It’s a hugely rewarding role, and we hope to encourage members of the community from all backgrounds to get in touch and find out more about becoming an on-call firefighter. Hampton Angling Association The Committee and members of Hampton Angling Association (HAA) have been busy since the club was formed in July last year The club was formed to protect the lakes, the fish stock and reduce anti-social behaviour around the various lakes. Part of the condition of being a book holder is that all members must commit to 6 hours of work towards the upkeep of the lakes and surrounding areas. Nathan Minter, the HAA chair has organised 12 well attended work parties so far and collected around 280 bags of litter from around the lakes as well as removing various items that had been dumped including a washing machine, 2 sofas, numerous bikes and even a stolen cash register (this was returned to the Police!) They have also with the permission of O & H, opened up a bigger space on Allen vale lake to allow disabled anglers access as well as adding 24 pegs around the other lakes in Hampton. Club members spent over 300 hours removing the algae from Sunset Lake, initially this was disposed of, however after a little bit of research it was found that the algae could be used as a weed suppressant and fertiliser, and with the purchase of a trailer funded by the Parish Council, algae deliveries can now be made to both allotment sites! The algae has worked wonders at the Hargate site and we are hoping to see an abundance of crops soon! The HAA will be seeking

permission to add small islands on Sunset lake, these will reduce some of the problematic issues caused by the algae and allow the swans a safe accessible breeding site. Cllr Wiggin has kindly donated the cost of 2 of these islands and the HAA will be covering the cost of additional islands from funds received from memberships and holding matches. The club bailiffs have also done an excellent job of patrolling the lakes in their free time, removing 19 people who didn’t have memberships or fishing licenses and protecting the two no fishing ponds within the Parish. Residents who live near to Holly walk and Angel Ponds also received leaflets with all the HAA Bailiffs contact numbers The HAA alongside volunteers from the Canal and River Trust have held 3 learn to fish events, these have been extremely well attended with 150 youths and beginners learning to fish safely. This is set to continue with another 5 learn to fish events planned for the forthcoming months. During the summer holidays, 3 youth matches are already planned with prizes, medals and goodie bags kindly supplied by Angling Direct and the HAA will be holding a pike school in winter 2020 to teach juniors (and adults) how to fish for pike correctly and safely.

Members have competed in 8 matches so far, with angler Paul Barnes winning with a 7lbs Tench, overall highest winning weight was 45lbs caught by the chair Nathan Minter, however outside a match the biggest fish caught has been a whopping 22lb Pike. The HAA will also be holding a Charity match on the 6th June, for further information please visit the Hampton Angling Facebook page. The future of angling in Hampton looks very promising and the committee will soon start to assess the stock of each lake with catch reports or netting on the smaller lakes. Crucian Carp will be added (supplied by the Environment Agency) to some of the lakes as part of a conservation project to preserve the species. The removal of the Catfish is also a priority for the club and matches are being planned to assist with this. If the catfish are caught, they will be contained and safely rehomed assisted by the EA. Memberships for the club will open again on the 1st July, if you already hold membership you can bring your old book (with all your work party signatures!) for a quicker renewal and the same photos can be used. The club have also negotiated a 10% discount at Angling direct and a discount on certain items at Fish on (Lincoln Road).

Be prepared…but don’t panic! Zombie apocalypse movies are perennially popular. Human beings love to imagine how we might survive after a global disaster. By Clare Becker Recent flooding and the coronavirus have prompted an interest in ‘prepping’, as in ‘prepping for disaster’. Preppers have historically been cast alongside conspiracy theorists, and American survivalists, who build bunkers, live ‘off-grid’ and are scarier than any imaginary zombie. As flooding and extreme weather become ‘normal’ events in the UK, and every year seems to bring a new pandemic threat it’s easy to see why people feel helpless, and why ‘prepping’ becomes seductive. Should we prepare for imminent disaster?

World Health Day 7 April World Health Day marks the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organisation in 1948.

It does no harm to plan how we might be more self-reliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard. I would advise against specialist emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freeze-dried food tastes like garden mulch.

Each year, a theme is selected that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world.

The answer isn’t a straightforward yes or no. In this country we are fortunate that food is plentiful. However, food is supplied on a ‘just-intime’ basis, using predictions based on the public’s past shopping habits. If everyone shops normally, supply and demand remain balanced, but if large numbers of people suddenly panic-buy more than usual to stockpile food, shelves are stripped bare pretty quickly. It makes sense to be aware of this and to think about how we might manage if there was a temporary hiccup in our own food supply chain, perhaps because poor weather or flooding prevents us from accessing shops, or because we’re confined to our home through illness or quarantine. It does no harm to plan how we might be more self-reliant for a week or so, and to make sure that we have a basic emergency store cupboard. I would advise against specialist emergency food packs you see advertised. They are expensive, and freeze-dried food tastes like garden mulch. A few extra tins in your weekly shop is easy for most people to achieve. Remember, in most instances you will already have food in, which can be used up first. Useful items for an emergency store cupboard: tinned meats, tinned vegetables, tinned beans, pulses and chickpeas, tinned soups and packet soups, tinned fruit, a large bag of rice, a large bag of porridge oats, cooking oil, salt, honey, long-life milk, long-life orange juice, packs of cereal, cereal and protein bars, dried fruit. If you live in an area where flooding and therefore water contamination is likely allow 2 litres of bottled water per person per day for drinking and cooking. A simple emergency store cupboard can be built up over a couple of months quite easily by adding a few extras into your weekly shop. A can opener is essential. Torches, batteries, and a camping stove insure against loss of electricity, and loo roll, bleach, hand sanitiser, paracetamol, ibuprofen, plasters and disinfectant are useful health and medical items. If you live in a flood zone, make sure your supplies are stored high up. Use a vermin-proof storage box in the coolest place possible, and every so often move items out into your regular cupboards, and replace them, to make sure that nothing goes beyond its sell-by date. One last thing. We all have important documents filed away such as birth certificates, passports, insurance documents and house deeds. Ideally these should be stored in a fire and waterproof deed box to protect them. A little thought and preparation goes a long way. No bunker required!

Dogs at Easter Did you know that chocolate, hot cross buns and spring bulbs can all be harmful to your dog? We take a look at what might be particularly poisonous to your pet at this time of year. Chocolate Chocolate poisoning is particularly common at this time of year, especially with the large amounts of Easter eggs that may be around your home. Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine, which can be poisonous to dogs, as well as most other animals, including cats, rodents and rabbits.

How much is too much chocolate? The seriousness of the poisoning will depend on the amount, type and quality of the chocolate eaten. Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains, and therefore the more poisonous it is. White chocolate contains very little theobromine and although it is unlikely to cause theobromine poisoning, it is still very fatty and can make your dog ill.

What signs can it cause? As well as possibly causing vomiting and diarrhoea, chocolate is a stimulant, so it can cause excitement, muscle twitching, tremors, fitting and can increase the heart rate and blood pressure.

Hot cross buns Grapes, raisins, currants and sultanas are all toxic to dogs and it is believed the dried forms of these fruits are more toxic than grapes. At this time of year, it is therefore important that hot cross buns are kept well away from your dogs.

How much is too much? It is not known why these fruits are toxic to dogs, or how much can be poisonous. Some dogs have eaten large quantities of this fruit and had no effects, while others have become unwell after very small amounts.

What signs can it cause? As well as possibly causing stomach problems, these fruits can cause kidney failure, which can sometimes be delayed by up to three days. Kidney failure may sometimes present as a decrease in urination, or your dog may also appear

dull and show signs of increased thirst. Prompt treatment is important. If your dog does eat any amount, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Spring bulbs Incidents of poisoning from spring bulbs are most likely to occur from dogs eating the bulbs in autumn when they are planted, or in spring when they begin to flower.

Daffodils Effects from poisoning can include vomiting, stomach upset and salivation, but can escalate to dogs appearing sleepy, wobbly on their legs, or collapsing. In more serious cases fits and changes to heart rate, body temperature and blood pressure may occur. Dogs can also become unwell if the flowers are eaten, or if water from a vase containing daffodils is drunk.

Tulips The toxins found in this plant cause irritation to the mouth and gastrointestinal tract and usually only result in drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea. Serious cases are rare, but effects could include heart problems and breathing difficulties.

Spring crocus These flower in spring and are said to be of low toxicity and may only cause a mild stomach upset if eaten. These bulbs are not to be confused with autumn crocus, which flower in autumn and can cause severe stomach upset, kidney and liver problems and bone marrow depression.

What to do if you suspect your dog has been poisoned If you think that your dog may have eaten, touched or inhaled something that it shouldn't

have, consult your local veterinary practice immediately. Do not try to make your dog sick. Trying to do this can cause other complications, which may harm your dog. In an emergency you can help your veterinary practice make an informed decision as to whether your dog needs to be treated by them, and if so, what the best treatment would be. Where possible you should provide your veterinary practice with information on: ďƒˆ What poison you think your dog has been exposed to (i.e. chocolate, ibuprofen, etc.). Include any product names, or lists of ingredients if relevant ďƒˆ How much they may have been exposed to (i.e. 500mg, 500ml, one tablet etc., even approximations may help) ďƒˆ When your dog was exposed to the poison (i.e. 5 minutes, 5 hours or 5 days ago) If your dog has been unwell, and if so, what clinical effects have been seen It is easier for a veterinarian to care for a poisoned dog if it is treated sooner rather than later. If you are in any doubt, do not wait for your dog to become unwell before calling for advice.

If you do need to take your dog to your veterinary practice, make sure that you take along any relevant packaging, or a sample of the poison, i.e. parts of plant or fungi. Always make sure that you yourself are protected and cannot be poisoned in turn.

Send for the Cavalry The weather warming up is often a trigger for the emergence of aphids homing in on our plants for nourishment. Aphids can overwinter either as eggs laid on plants, or soil, or as adults as they are fairly tolerant to temperatures down to around -14°C. Some aphids famed by ants are sheltered in ant colonies over winter and then in spring led out to graze on plants like cattle It is at times like this that we need to call for the cavalry – principally: ladybirds, lacewings and hoverfly larvae. The hoverflies tend to come later in the season many migrating in from continental Europe but the ladybirds and lacewings will have overwintered on site to emerge to help us control the aphids. The tidier you were with your land over winter the fewer of the cavalry are likely to remain as they need shelter to overwinter safely such as fallen leaves and low growing plants too late for 2020 but worth remembering for autumn. An adult ladybird will consume around 100 aphids daily so they really do provide effective control. Remember not to reach for the pray gun at the first sign of aphids as any chemicals used will kill many more than the ‘pest’ including the super predators we need to hold them in check. Dispose of the chemicals and let nature take care of the rest for not only are the ladybirds and lacewings great for aphid control they add a certain elegance and beauty that can’t be poured from a bottle of poison.

Lakota (Lover of Nature)

In early March, Hampton is brightened not only by the yellow daffodils but also the showers of white blossom covering the blackthorn The blackthorn flowers in early spring (usually from March) and should not be confused with the hawthorn, which also has a generous blossoming of white flowers. The hawthorn though, flowers much later than the blackthorn in May, hence its other common name of the May Tree. Blackthorn flowers develop into blue-black fruits known as sloes. These sloes are used to make sloe gin, wine and preserves. From early times blackthorn has been used to make remedies which were used to treat digestive problems and rheumatism: using its bark, flowers and fruit. The bark is dark, almost black, hence its name, and the wood itself is hardwearing and strong. It is often used to make walking and riding sticks. Blackthorn wood was also said to be used to make witches wands and staffs. Even Harry Potter had experience of a blackthorn wand, but wasn’t that impressed by it: ‘Harry looked down at the blackthorn wand. Every minor spell he had cast with

it so far that day had seemed less powerful than those he had produced with his phoenix wand.’ Black Rod, one of Parliament’s officials who plays a major role in every Opening of Parliament session knocks on the door of the Commons Chamber with his rod, which is made of blackthorn wood. The blackthorn frequently appears in history, myth and legend. In Ireland, 11 November is the day of the Blackthorn Sprites who guard the sacred blackthorn from being cut by humans. Blackthorn is often mentioned in fairy tales too. In Sleeping Beauty a hedge of blackthorn grew up around the castle where she lay, but opened in order to allow the prince to pass through. In the tale of Rapunzel the wicked witch threw one of Rapunzel’s suitors from the tower where she was imprisoning her, and unfortunately he landed on a blackthorn bush and was severely injured. At one time branches of blackthorn were also used to make wreaths for New Year, before the

blossom emerged, to be scorched over a fire and decorated with mistletoe. The branches would also be used as a farming fertility offering, baked in an oven, with the ashes then sprinkled on the fields of the earliest sown wheat. Whether there was going to be a cold winter would also be predicted from the number of sloes on the blackthorn: ‘Many sloes, many cold toes’.

The Blackthorn Fairy The wind is cold, the Spring seems long a-waking; The woods are brown and bare; Yet this is March: soon April will be making All things most sweet and fair. See, even now, in hedge and thicket tangled, One brave and cheering sight: The leafless branches of the Blackthorn, spangled With starry blossoms white! Cicely Mary Barker (1895 – 1973)

younggazette Hampton Hargate Primary We’ve had another very busy few weeks here at Hampton Hargate Primary

Hampton College Primary World Book Day 2020 The whole school enjoyed World Book Day on Thursday 5th March. The day kicked off with a whole school assembly in the morning where we admired the sea of children and staff all dressed up as book characters. Throughout the day, all year groups learnt a poem by Andy Seed (our visitor on Friday!). The children thoroughly enjoyed their performance poetry and also getting to know more about Andy in preparation for his visit. In the afternoon, the children enjoyed a reading-related craft activity before receiving their free World Book Day token at the end of the day. The children are able to use their token to buy one of the £1 books or money off a full-price book. The closest place to school to spend these is Tesco! The author visit on Friday was brilliant, all of the children experienced a workshop with Andy during the day and the book signing was a great opportunity for lots of children to receive a signed book. He was clearly so passionate about his job as an author and hopefully this has inspired lots of our children at Hampton College. The book signing was extremely popular at lunchtime with Andy signing for 90 minutes non-stop! The children were all very excited to meet Andy and asked some very pertinent questions of him. We were very impressed how the children demonstrated our PROUD values showing politeness and courtesy.§ A big 'thank you' to the PTA for their support in funding this event. We hope your child thoroughly enjoyed their time with Andy Seed.

We started the month with a visit from the National Space Centre and their Star Dome. KS1 enjoyed learning all about space and had fun dressing up in space related clothing. We are proud to announce that our year 4 student Aarav was the winner of the Vivacity Lost World indoor play competition at SerpentineGreen. Aarav won the competiton with an excellent drawing of his interpterion of a lost world. Well done Aarav. Last month we took part in the “Daley” challenge. Children got involved in a range of exercises every day for a week in aid of Sport Relief. As part of their brand-new geography topic ‘Farm to Fork’ this term,Year 3 and 4 had a trip to a local farm to find out more about how food is

We have recently celebrated World Book Day, the children came into nursery dressed as their favourite book characters. The children made book marks and drew their favourite characters

Little Acorns Day Nursery and Montessori School

As we approach the final term before our preschool leave us to start their new adventure at big school the children are focusing on getting ready for school! The children have been learning to become independent, putting on their own coats and shoes; they also have been learning the letters and sounds in the alphabet and recognising numbers. We are currently taking bookings for September 2020 and also into 2021! If you would like to come and have a look around and are interested in a space please contact the nursery on 01733 244000 or enquiries@littleacorns-daynursery.co.uk

grown and how it reaches our plates. They visited Moor Farm in Newborough. The children had a wonderful time learning about the day to day running of a working farm and meeting the animals with the added extra of enjoying a tractor and trailer ride. And finally, as part of our World War 2 topic Year 5 and 6 have been to the Stibbington Centre on a school trip to experience life as an evacuee. They spent the day enjoying activities and experiences in the life of a World War 2 child. Prior to that the children were lucky enough to have Mr Harrison, one of our Governors, come in and talk to them about his experience as a child in the Blitz in South London.

Mini Movers Hopefully the lighter days are helping to provide your little ones with a lot more energy to enjoy our spring days! If you are looking for an outlet for that new found spring energy then why not come along to a Mini Movers session on a Monday. It’s just £1 per family, Monday afternoons (term times), 1.15pm to 2.45pm at the Hampton Vale Community Centre. Refreshments for the children and adults are included. If you haven’t been to us, please come along to try out a session. We don’t bite! If you’re nervous about coming alone bring a friend or family member for moral support if you want, everyone is welcome! We are a really friendly group with a great mix of children, and there is always a biscuit or two and usually a slice of cake! You can always give us a call before coming, or message us through Facebook and we will be happy to welcome you and your child to our stay and play sessions. All sessions are informal drop in ones, so no need to book. The sessions are run by volunteers from KingsGate Community Church. Hampton Vale Primary Academy Abbie Branston training

Hampton College

Year 11 have been working hard for their Pre Public Exams. Revision sessions will be continuing after school and during the Easter holidays to support our students in achieving the best results possible Details of these revision sessions are available on our website. Staff are now offering additional revision session to support students, with Year 11 students now being expected to attend school every day until 4pm, so they can attend the many additional revision sessions staff are providing. Students continue to be celebrated for their achievements, both within school and outside school. They are recognised either in Staffroom briefings or at lunchtime in Mr Gilligan’s office. Students have been nominated for being actively involved in City wide youth initiatives, helping in class and participating in the Faraday Challenge, which the Hampton College team won! Some of our students’ recent successes have included Kai Chilvers in Year 10 continuing to excel in cross country competitions, winning the County Schools Cross Country Championships and Amber Turner in Year 8 competing at County gymnastics and being selected to train for both Bedfordshire and Huntingdon County cricket teams. Enrichment activities for our students are continuing. Year 13 students recently visited the Young Vic Theatre in London to see a production of The Doll’s House to support their understanding of the text. Students have had the opportunity to visit Caterpillar Logistics to hear about career

options within their industry, attended a UCAS Fair to further understand the university application process and visited Jesus College in Cambridge to experience life at university. The whole school were off timetable in March for the Collapsed Day, allowing students to complete coursework, undertake practical assessments, with the Geography Department visiting Sheffield to undertake their fieldwork. We are also encouraging our students to contribute to the College newsletter, asking them to share their experiences of life at the College and to celebrate their achievements both inside and outside school. Our students and staff have been busy fundraising this month. Abbie in Year 13 is currently training hard for a 5km (200 continuous lengths) swimathon challenge in aid of Cancer Research UK, Marie Curie and The Swimathon Foundation. Mrs Baron ran in the London Landmarks Half Marathon at the end of March in aid of Tommy’s Stilbirth charity and Mr Heald will be running the London Marathon in April in aid of the NSPCC. Mr Gilligan will also be running for charity in the Manchester Marathon at the beginning of April. If you would like to donate to any of these good causes, details can be found on our social media pages.

Thursday 5 March marked World Book Day, and at Hampton Vale we celebrated with a range of exciting reading activities over the course of the week Throughout Book Week there was an extra special buzz about reading around school with pupils engaging in book-themed activities such as voting in our 'Book World Cup'; decorating a potato as a book character; enjoying a delicious David Walliams book-themed lunch; dressing up as class-themed book characters for World Book Day; as well as taking part in a book-themed house competition quiz. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was voted to victory in our Book World Cup, and is our official favourite book as a school for 2020. Children from across all year groups have also been busy reading in unusual places, and have been sharing their photos with us. Submissions have included: reading in a car boot, reading on a tractor, and even reading whilst doing ballet! We would also like to say a special thank you to the Peterborough branch of Waterstone's who facilitated our staff meeting during Book Week. Teachers from across school took the opportunity to learn about new children's literature in order to use within our Reading Curriculum, as well as select brand new books to be read and enjoyed by children across school. We have also recently renovated book corners across school, and have plans to create a central 'Alice in Wonderland' themed reading area. Storytime is an integral part of daily life at Hampton Vale, and we are excited to use our new reading area as a place where pupils will be able to enjoy books together, as well as record and read book reviews. We can't wait to share the photos very soon, so watch this space.

Inclusive Football Another month has ticked by in the evolution of inclusive football in Hampton and FC Hampton continues to grow - even more quickly than we would have expected Firstly, getting several local businesses involved to support the growth of the club, as well as some interesting conversations with some national companies, we can see that there is no ceiling to what we can achieve for the community. Since our last article, we have received an immense amount of positive feedback from people looking to get into football as well as those already involved with other clubs - so thank you for taking the time to connect! With our aim to offer all-year-round events, training and competitions close to being secured too, we are really excited to bring you what is probably the most progressive football club you may have seen. For coaches looking to gain their FA badges, we have a sponsor programme to assist this and we have already secured a coach who is also a development officer for a Premier League club - yes, we are serious about creating a platform for boys and girls to be the next David Beckham or Lucy Bronze (to name two!) If you are already a coach looking for the next step, or a parent looking for a community club to develop your child’s sporting and social skills, then please get in touch. We will be running a series of 'Football Fun for All' sessions for boys and girls looking to get into football, starting Saturday 21 March at Hampton Gardens Secondary School . Visit www.fchampton.co.uk to find out more and register your interest. We’d love you to join our amazing journey.

Beef Rendang Recipe Prep time: 40 minutes Cooking Time: 21/2 hours Serves: 6+ Ingredients  3 tbsp vegetable oil  2kg beef shin or skirt, cut into bite-sized chunks  2 lemongrass stalks, bruised  2 x 400ml cans coconut milk  4 tbsp unsweetened desiccated coconut  2 kaffir lime leaves, torn  1 Beef stock cube  2 tbsp tamarind paste  1 tsp sugar  ¼ tsp salt

Ingredients - for the paste  1/2 - 3 chillies chopped (depending on taste)  6-8 baby shallots  2 inch / 5cm piece ginger, chopped  Three cloves garlic Method For the paste, place all paste ingredients into a small food processor and blitz until smooth. Heat the oil in a heavy-based flameproof casserole dish or large saucepan. Fry the paste for 5-10 minutes until golden. Add the beef chunks and the lemongrass and mix well. Once the beef has coloured, add the coconut milk plus 250ml water. Bring to the boil, then lower to a very low simmer, uncovered for 2 hours. Stir occasionally to prevent the rendang sticking, and more often towards the end. Towards the end of the cooking time toast the coconut in a frying pan on a low heat for 5-7 mins until golden brown. Set aside to cool. Using a blender, coarsely blend it to finer pieces – but not too fine. Put to one side. After 2 hrs, add the coconut, kaffir lime leaves, stock cube, tamarind paste, sugar and salt to the pan. Stir well and simmer for 30 minutes. The meat should be tender and falling apart when touched. Serve with rice and green salad.

moneymatters Divorce and CGT Sorting out the financial and property aspects of a divorce often involves transfers of property which may give rise to a liability for Capital Gains Tax This could be in respect of a property owned by one or both of you which isn’t the main family home or the former family home itself, if the divorce has taken so long to conclude that you are outside the period of exemption. CGT is also an issue between former cohabitees who are splitting up and selling their former home together. In short, anyone facing such a situation should be obtaining expert advice from their accountant and/property lawyer as to the tax implications. A specialist family solicitor may not be qualified to give conclusive advice on such issues but will flag up questions that need answering, as they could have implications that significantly affect a matrimonial financial settlement. It has been common to include in financial remedy Court Orders, clauses that state which spouse is going to carry the liability for any CGT payable on a transfer of property which has not yet been quantified. This is likely to change now because from the 6th April 2020, anyone responsible for administering a taxable gain from the disposal of a UK residential property will have to submit a “residential property return” and make a CGT payment on account within 30 days of completion of the disposal. Previously, you would expect to wait to pay any CGT by the 31st January of the tax year following the year of disposal. That could provide a waiting period of between 10 and 22 months after the transfer date. The upside of this change will mean that there will at least be certainty as to the exact amounts involved, whereas before there was inevitably a certain amount of guess work as to what if any CGT liability will arise. Your family law solicitor will steer you in the direction of an appropriate expert for this important issue, as required for your case.

Money Matters by Pete Bird, Bird & Co, Certified Public Accountants

Self Assessment Tax Returns for 2020 A tax return can be filed as soon after the tax year ends once you have collected all that is required – you do not have to wait until the following January. It is far better and less stressful to get everything together sooner rather than later and of course the sooner you will know what the dreaded tax bill is in the following January. Also, if your tax return is prepared before the second payment on account in July is due and if your tax is less than the previous year, you can apply to reduce it Helpful Housekeeping Tips for the Tax Year Ended 5 April 2020 If you were scrambling around last tax year to get everything ready for your accountant or even yourself to enable your tax return to be prepared, why not follow these few tips to make life easier. 1. As soon as you receive information relevant for the tax year 2019/2020, make a file (or obtain a proverbial shoebox) to keep everything together. These are a few items you should obtain and keep; 2. P60’s or P45’s; 3. Pension statements; 4. If you are a landlord and claim mortgage interest relief, keep the mortgage statement(s) that are in respect of let property; 5. Obtain and keep bank/building society interest certificates for all accounts that pay you interest; 6. Keep all dividend vouchers in respect of dividends received; 7. Making Tax Digital (MTD), a new way to file your tax returns by submitting five per year is due to come into force in April 2021, but no exact date has been given yet. It might be worthwhile to consider MTD now so you are ready when it actually does come into force; 8. Don’t forget that if your spouse or civil partner has not used all their personal allowances, they may transfer 10% of their PA to you, providing you are not a higher rate tax payer.

Tips for Self Employed and owner managed limited companies: 1. Obtain and keep invoices and/or receipts for all expenses. HMRC could refuse you tax relief or input VAT if you have no evidence of an expense without a receipt or VAT invoice. Advisory note - fuel receipts etc. do fade if left in sunlight; 2. Obtain and keep all bank statements where business transactions are made; 3. Write up your records on a regular basis, there is nothing worse than having to write your records up for a long period. 4. You should also be aware that some accountants charge a higher fee if preparing your tax return in the January, but please note we never do. These are only a few ideas to consider and there may be many other “housekeeping” matters you could attend to make your life easier (and your accountants) and take some of the stress out of preparing tax returns.

Some moles are present at birth but most develop during the first thirty years of life, with fair skinned people having more moles than those with darker skin. Most moles are completely harmless and it is common for them to change in number and appearance. However, in rare cases they can develop into melanoma - a serious and aggressive form of skin cancer. Melanomas usually appear as a dark, fast-growing spot that was not there before, or as a pre-existing mole that changes shape, size or colour and bleeds, itches or reddens. You should check your skin every few months for new moles that develop (especially after the teenage years) and for changes to existing moles. These are things to look for:  Moles with uneven colouring or lots of different shades.  Moles with an uneven or ragged edge.  Bleeding, itchy, red, inflamed or crusty moles.  Moles which grow – particularly if they are more than 0.5cm diameter (about the width of the end of a pencil). If you are concerned about any of the above, visit your GP immediately. The main treatment for melanoma is surgery, and if diagnosed and treated early, it is usually successful.

It is said to involve the transfer of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to their patient. Some controversy surrounds Reiki, because it is hard to prove its effectiveness through scientific means. But many people believe it works. The word ‘Reiki’ means ‘mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.’ It comes from the Japanese words ‘rei’ (universal) and ‘ki’ (life energy). The idea of Reiki is that is channels energy from the practitioner to target and work on the energy channels of the patient. According to practitioners, energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or emotional pain. If not released these these energy blocks can cause illness. By improving the flow of energy around the body, practitioners say they can enable relaxation, reduce pain, and speed healing. Reiki is held in a peaceful setting. The patient will remain fully clothed, and sit in a comfortable chair, or lie on a table. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body. If there is an active injury, the hands may be held just above the wound. The transfer of energy takes place while the hands are held over the patient. During this time, the practitioner’s hands may be warm and tingling. Each hand position is held until the practitioner senses that the energy has stopped flowing. When the practitioner feels that the heat, or energy, in

Reiki is a form of complementary therapy commonly referred to as energy healing. It has been around for thousands of years but it’s current form was first developed in 1922 by a Japanese Buddhist called Mikao Usui By Louise Addison their hands has abated, they will remove their hands and place them over a different area of the body. Sessions can last 15-90 minutes. The number of sessions will vary, depending on what a client wishes to accomplish. According to practitioners, the healing effects are mediated by channeling the universal energy known as qi, pronounced ‘chi.’ It is the life force energy that some people believe surrounds all of us. Reiki experts say that while this energy is not measurable by modern scientific techniques, it can be felt by those who can tune in to it. Reiki is said to induce deep relaxation, help people cope with difficulties, relieve emotional stress, and improve overall wellbeing. People who love Reiki describe it as ‘intensely relaxing.’ Reiki is used to help treat many conditions including: cancer, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain. Patients report feeling better after a session. Research from Cancer Research U.K. says that one reason could be that the therapist spends time with them and touches them. This is soothing for patients who may be overwhelmed by invasive therapy, fear, and stress. Individuals report different experiences. Some say that the practitioner’s hands become hot, others report cooling hands and some people feel pulsating waves. The most common reports are of a release.

staysafe Don’t be fooled by the rogue traders this April – and give doorstep traders the brush off With the milder weather finally here – many of us choose this time of year to give our home exterior or garden a spring clean If the effects of winter have taken their toll on your garden, property or driveway, you may be thinking about calling in the experts to inject a little life back into the space at the rear or front of the house or the exterior itself. However, there is a fair chance that before you have the opportunity to research and contact a tried and tested, reliable tradesperson – an unscrupulous cowboy builder or rogue trader will be knocking at your door! But whatever the job – big or small – don’t be tempted give the work to someone who cold calls you at your home, claiming to be ‘carrying out similar work in the area’. Firstly, they have caught you unawares, just when you have returned from the school run or got home after a long day at the office – a time when you don’t really have time to think and make an informed decision. Equally as disturbing, they will target elderly or vulnerable people living alone. Secondly, any offer which appears too good to be true often is.

Remember: • Don’t be talked into something on the spur of the moment. • Don’t take their word for it when they tell you urgent work or repairs need doing. • Do ask them to qualify who they are and to leave you a contact number. • Never hand over any cash as a deposit for work which they say they will return to carry out. • Feel free to ask to see their credentials and /or examples of their work. • Always ask them politely to leave if you feel uncomfortable with their approach. Equally, be weary when it comes to leaflets dropping through your door; some may not be all they seem. We know that there are many genuine companies who deliver leaflets, but for the many legitimate ones; there is a high number of scammers. It is not uncommon for leaflets to list a valid address, but the company name is not registered there. Landline numbers and 0800 numbers that ‘ghost’ a mobile number that is not traceable.

However, there are a few simple rules which could give away tell-tale signs of a rogue trader: • Do they say, ‘we are only in your area today’? • Are they offering a reduced price for cash or having a one-time ‘special offer’? • Are they trying to push you into making a quick decision? Safe Local Trades is a supporter of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Against Scams Partnership (CAPASP), which is committed to working towards stamping out scams of this kind.We also work closely with Crime Prevention Officers across the county who alert us to scam trends which we can then in turn share with our consumers and our members. So, if you are in the market for a new driveway or patio, or are dreaming of a new lawn or garden for the summer – then always use a reputable tradesperson. No reputable tradesperson will come knocking on your door ‘touting’ for business. Needless to say, it is absolutely mandatory that you never pay anyone cash at the door, especially when they haven't even conducted any work on your premises.
