MORPH Metamorphosis is defined as a striking change of structure in an individual organism after hatching or their birth. Hormones called molting and juvenile hormones, that are not species specific, regulate these extraordinary changes. These physical changes as well as those involving growth are then followed by c h a n g e s o f t h e o r g a n i s m ’s p h y s i o l o g y, b i o c h e m i s t r y, a n d t h e i r b e h a v i o r.

Examples of metamorphosis include the tadpole, an aquatic larval stage that transforms into the land-dwelling frog.

The adult butterflies have long legs, long antennae, and compound eyes. They can also fly by using their large and colorful wings.

W ith frogs and toads, the external gills of the newly hatched tadpoles are covered with a gill sac after a few days, and lungs are quickly formed.

T h e p u p a s t a g e o f a b u t t e r f l y, i s n o t a “resting” stage as many people think. Q u i t e t h e c o n t r a r y, a l o t i s h a p p e n i n g to the pupa. W ings are fully formed– the source of the wings are forming u n d e r n e a t h t h e c a t e r p i l l a r ’s s k i n b e f o r e its last molt. Antennae are formed and the smaller chewing mouth parts of the caterpillar are transformed into the s u c k i n g m o u t h p a r t s o f t h e b u t t e r f l y.

After approximately ten to fourteen days in the pupa stage, the butterfly is ready to emerge. When the butterfly emerges from its pupa stage, it cannot y e t f l y. T h e b u t t e r f l y m u s t t h e n p u m p fluids from its abdomen through the veins in its wings, that causes the wings to expand to their full size.
