MORPH Metamorphosis is defined as a striking change of structure in an individual organism after hatching or their birth. Hormones called molting and juvenile hormones, that are not species specific, regulate these extraordinary changes. These physical changes as well as those involving growth are then followed by c h a n g e s o f t h e o r g a n i s m ’s p h y s i o l o g y, b i o c h e m i s t r y, a n d t h e i r b e h a v i o r.

W ings are fully formed– the source of the wings are forming u n d e r n e a t h t h e c a t e r p i l l a r ’s s k i n b e f o r e its last molt. Antennae are formed and the smaller chewing mouth parts of the caterpillar are transformed into the s u c k i n g m o u t h p a r t s o f t h e b u t t e r f l y.

After approximately ten to fourteen days in the pupa stage, the butterfly is ready to emerge. When the butterfly emerges from its pupa stage, it cannot y e t f l y. T h e b u t t e r f l y m u s t t h e n p u m p fluids from its abdomen through the veins in its wings, that causes the wings to expand to their full size.
