At the fair, Captain Kind and his friend Texas Ranger Captain Gideon K. Lewis formed a partnership to establish and operate a livestock operation with headquarters at the site of the Santa Gertrudis Creek. King Ranch has played important roles in South Texas history. During the Civil war, the Nueces strip was the back door of the Confederacy and a way around the union Blockade of Confederate Port. It is the birth place of the American ranching business. At the Civil war, over 100,000 head of King Ranch cattle headed up the trail to feed a beef-hungry nation. King Ranch sprawls across 825,000 acres of South Texas. Covering more than 1,300 square miles, it is larger than
the entire state of Rhode Island, and it is the home of 60,000 Santa Gertrudis and 300 registered Quarter horses. King Ranch is also a multinational agribusiness and energy exploration corporation which produces grain sorghum, sugar cane, rice, cotton, turf grass, sweet corn, and cattle.
